The Bible tells us here,

"And he spoke a
parable unto them, saying,

the ground of a certain rich man

brought forth plentifully.

And he thought within himself,
saying, what shall I do,

because I have no room
where to bestow my fruits?

And he said, this will I
do, I will pull down my barns,

Jesus is sharing a parable
here with some of His followers.

He's sharing with
them a story, this parable,

that there was this man

that had a lot of wealth.

He had a lot of prosperity.

He was a man

that was a high
ranking official in society

because of his
status quo and his wealth.

And Jesus says that this man,

he had all of the
modern conveniences

and he had so much
stuff that the Bible says

that he
actually said to himself,

man, what am I gonna
do with all the things

that I have?

My barns can no longer
hold all of the great things

that I have achieved in my life,

all the things that
I've been able to buy.

He says, well, what I'll do
is I'll pull down my old barns,

I'll destroy them and
I'll build bigger ones

and greater ones
that can hold my wealth,

that I have built here
in my kingdom on this earth.

Jesus here is
showing us an example

of what a lot of
people in this world are like.

You know, my friends,

as I travel around
and I go around doing,

sharing the Word
of God with my friends

that I meet in place by place,

it's interesting
that time and time again

I meet people
that are interested

and focused upon the
things in this world.

Now, I also meet
people who are interested

and focused on following God

and doing what God
would have them to do.

But, you know, there are
people all across the world

whose goals and
achievements in life

is to see how high
they can get in society.

To see how high they can
get in the eyes of other people.

To see how high they can become

can get in this life

by building up their
kingdom here in this world.

And Jesus is showing
us an example of this

who had built his
kingdom here on this earth

with all the modern conveniences

that he could possibly want.

It goes on and it says this.

This man who is seeking after
all the modern conveniences

that God calls him a fool.

God would say the same thing

things here in this world,

kingdom building here

and not in heaven.

unfortunately have to look down

this man here in this story.

I want to share a story with you

in Revelation Chapter 2.

Here Jesus is talking to
one of the seven churches.

Revelation 2 and 3 are
dedicated to the seven churches

and Jesus is talking
to the second church here

in Revelation Chapter 2

and we're gonna
begin in verse 8 and 9.

The Bible says this,

"And unto the angel
of the church in Smyrna

write, these things
saith the first and the last,

which was dead, and is alive.

I know thy
works, and tribulation,

and poverty, but thou art rich

and I know the blasphemy of them

The Bible tells us here

that Jesus is talking about
a church, one of the churches,

it's called the
church of Smyrna.

And he says to
the church of Smyrna,

I know thy works,
that you have done

all of these great
things that you are--

That you are
poor, the Bible says,

that you have poverty.
00:07:47.08\00:07:48.47
You're not a-- you're
not a physically rich church.
00:07:48.50\00:07:51.72
But it's interesting,
the Bible says here.
00:07:51.75\00:07:53.40
He says, I know thy
works and thy poverty
00:07:53.43\00:07:55.38
but it says, it
says, but thou art rich.
00:07:55.41\00:07:58.76
Now, I ask myself the question,
how can a group of people,

how can a church be poor
but be rich at the same time?

Well, Jesus says here,

that the church of Smyrna
was poor but it was also rich.
00:08:07.09\00:08:10.44
I ask myself,
what were they rich in?
00:08:10.47\00:08:12.26
Were they rich
in physical things?
00:08:12.29\00:08:14.25
Did they have a
large bank account?
00:08:14.28\00:08:15.99
Were they-- were they above
the higher echelons of society?
00:08:16.02\00:08:20.45
How were they rich?
00:08:20.48\00:08:22.03
That's the
question I ask myself.

Well, the passage
goes on in verse 11,

and it says this, "He
that hath an ear, let him hear

what the Spirit
saith unto the churches.

He that overcometh shall not
be hurt of the second death."

Jesus here is writing
about the church of Smyrna

and He's saying,
he that overcometh,

and I can almost
imagine in my mind

that the church of Smyrna,
00:08:46.98\00:08:48.38
it may not have been a
physically wealthy church,
00:08:48.41\00:08:50.92
it may not have a had a
lot of physical prosperity,
00:08:50.95\00:08:53.49
it may not have had
a large amount of money
00:08:53.52\00:08:55.17
in its bank account,
00:08:55.20\00:08:56.27
it may not have had
the-- the most rich people
00:08:56.30\00:08:59.62
in its attendance
there at the church.
00:08:59.65\00:09:01.56
They probably didn't
have doctors and lawyers
00:09:01.59\00:09:03.31
and all of those kind of things
00:09:03.34\00:09:04.55
giving large
donations to the church
00:09:04.58\00:09:06.85
but the Bible says
that they were probably,

most likely, they
were a group of people
00:09:10.22\00:09:12.37
that experienced
victory in their life.

They were a group of people
00:09:14.82\00:09:15.85
that the Bible
says were overcomers.

They weren't rich
in physical things
00:09:18.44\00:09:20.18
but they were rich in victory.

They were rich in
an experience with God.

They were rich in
obtaining the things

that we should be looking
for as Christians here today.

The Bible tells
us about this church,

this church called Smyrna

and I believe that God
has given us this church

as an example to point
us in the right direction

of what God would have
us to be seeking after.

Not seeking after wealth,
not seeking after prosperity,

although we do
need to make ends meet

and we do need to have financial

help to help make our ends meet.

But, friends, that
should not be the first thing

that goes through our minds.

be the first thing

that we seek after

after God as the Bible tells us

that the gentiles--
Now, you have to understand

who the gentiles were
in the Jewish mindset.

In the Jewish mindset,

the gentiles
were unclean people.

They were heathen people.

They were people that--

that were godless
and served pagan gods.

They were people
that the Jewish people

did not want to associate with.

But the Bible says here

that after all these
things do the gentiles seek.

Now, the Bible says that

the gentiles seek
after all these things.

So it's probably safe to say

that if we seek
after all of these things

that the Bible would be
defining us as gentiles,

people that seek
after things in this world

before they seek after God.

Now, again, we ask
ourselves this question,

what are all these things?

Notice what the Bible
says in verse 31, it says this.

"Therefore take no thought,
saying, what shall we eat?

Or, what shall we drink?

Or, wherewithal
shall we be clothed?"

And then the
passage goes on, it says,

"For after all these
things do the gentiles seek."

So the things
that the gentiles seek

are the things in this world,

money, food, clothing
and all those modern things,

the conveniences of life.

That is the first
thing that they seek after,

not seeking after
the kingdom of heaven.

So, the Bible is telling us here

that gentiles seek
after the things in this world

before they seek
after the kingdom of heaven.

I don't know
about you, my friends,

but I don't want to be

what the Bible
defines here as a gentile.

I want to be what the--

defines as a person

that seeks after the
kingdom of heaven first.

As a person whose first thought

you an interesting thought.

we need, food, clothing
