Tombstone, Arizona 00:00:30.19\00:00:32.13 in the late 1800s, Law and Order. 00:00:32.16\00:00:36.24 What was it like? 00:00:36.27\00:00:38.14 I take you to tombstone 00:00:38.17\00:00:39.54 and we notice first the Bird Cage Theatre. 00:00:39.57\00:00:42.57 The Bird Cage Theatre was probably 00:00:42.60\00:00:45.25 the most famous landmark in this little Arizona town. 00:00:45.28\00:00:50.09 The New York Times referred to it in 1882 00:00:50.12\00:00:52.86 as the wildest, wickedest nightspot 00:00:52.89\00:00:54.86 between Basin Street and the Barbary Coast. 00:00:54.89\00:00:57.77 During the 9 years of its lusty career, 00:00:57.80\00:01:00.92 it never closed its doors. 00:01:00.95\00:01:03.25 It was site of 16 gunfights and suffered a 140 bullet holes. 00:01:03.28\00:01:08.22 The Bird Cage was named 00:01:08.25\00:01:09.62 for the 14 bird cage crib compartments 00:01:09.65\00:01:12.87 that are suspended from the ceiling 00:01:12.90\00:01:14.56 overlooking the gambling casino and dance hall. 00:01:14.59\00:01:16.77 In these compartments, 00:01:16.80\00:01:18.21 the ladies of the evening plied their trade. 00:01:18.24\00:01:22.33 Quite a strange place. 00:01:22.36\00:01:24.80 A lot of wild things went on in that Wild West. 00:01:24.83\00:01:27.55 We often tell stories and even watch movies 00:01:27.58\00:01:31.57 about the taming of the Wild West, 00:01:31.60\00:01:33.94 but it wasn't the west that needed to be tamed as much, 00:01:33.97\00:01:36.07 as it was the people that were trying to do the taming. 00:01:36.10\00:01:40.22 The symbol of Law and Order 00:01:40.25\00:01:42.83 in the Wild West was a gunslinger with the badge. 00:01:42.86\00:01:49.20 Enter Wyatt Earp. 00:01:49.23\00:01:52.29 Wyatt Earp was a compulsive gambler. 00:01:52.32\00:01:54.61 He was opportunistic. 00:01:54.64\00:01:56.13 He left his wife for another woman. 00:01:56.16\00:01:58.20 There were few things that he wouldn't do 00:01:58.23\00:02:00.86 if it meant a profit. 00:02:00.89\00:02:02.26 And his best friend was a notorious killer 00:02:02.29\00:02:04.05 whom he may have lied to protect. 00:02:04.08\00:02:07.10 He was a hard man living in hard times. 00:02:07.13\00:02:11.30 But he was on the side of the law. 00:02:11.33\00:02:13.56 The most famous scene outside of the Bird Cage Theatre 00:02:16.04\00:02:22.92 of course is the O.K. Corral. 00:02:22.95\00:02:26.41 The O.K. Corral was not a structure really, 00:02:26.44\00:02:28.61 it was really just a empty lot or a space 00:02:28.64\00:02:32.85 between a couple of buildings, but it became famous 00:02:32.88\00:02:36.04 when Wyatt Earp and his brothers confronted the cowboys. 00:02:36.07\00:02:40.83 Most witnesses seem to agree 00:02:40.86\00:02:42.67 that the firing started almost simultaneously 00:02:42.70\00:02:47.08 and then the shooting became general 00:02:47.11\00:02:49.12 and lasted all of 30 seconds. 00:02:49.15\00:02:51.97 As you see in the picture, this is actually how close 00:02:52.00\00:02:55.31 the cowboys and the Earps were to each other. 00:02:55.34\00:02:58.83 After the firing stopped three cowboys lay dead or dying. 00:02:58.86\00:03:04.60 Virgil Earp had been shot through the leg, 00:03:04.63\00:03:07.45 Morgan in the back, 00:03:07.48\00:03:08.85 and Doc Holliday had been grazed on the hip. 00:03:08.88\00:03:11.69 Only Wyatt Earp himself was completely unscathed. 00:03:11.72\00:03:16.73 In this Wild West environment, 00:03:16.76\00:03:21.03 the law was whatever could be enforced 00:03:21.06\00:03:24.60 by a gun slinging Marshall or a sheriff. 00:03:24.63\00:03:27.79 The west was won by whoever had the most firepower 00:03:27.82\00:03:31.43 and luck on their side. 00:03:31.46\00:03:35.82 But what about God's law? 00:03:35.85\00:03:38.06 How does God win the universe? 00:03:38.09\00:03:41.34 Is God some kind of cosmic gunslinger 00:03:41.37\00:03:44.53 who comes into the earth guns blazing 00:03:44.56\00:03:46.67 and subdues all of His enemies 00:03:46.70\00:03:48.58 and then rides of into the sunset. 00:03:48.61\00:03:51.85 How does God enforce His law? 00:03:51.88\00:03:55.87 We're going to take a new look at the law today, 00:03:57.75\00:04:00.63 maybe the kind of look that you've never taken before. 00:04:00.66\00:04:04.22 So let me begin by asking you a question. 00:04:04.25\00:04:07.66 Which of God's Ten Commandments 00:04:07.69\00:04:11.08 would you chose to omit if God allowed you too? 00:04:11.11\00:04:16.21 All right, just think in your mind. 00:04:16.24\00:04:17.81 Now the rules of these games are follows. 00:04:17.84\00:04:21.05 You can chose one commandment out of any of the ten, 00:04:21.08\00:04:25.12 any commandment you want. 00:04:25.15\00:04:27.34 And let's say that you would like God 00:04:27.37\00:04:30.38 to give your free pass on that one, okay? 00:04:30.41\00:04:32.99 Now we know God doesn't actually do that, 00:04:33.02\00:04:34.72 but this is just a hypothetical game, okay? 00:04:34.75\00:04:37.17 Whatever it is let's just say 00:04:37.20\00:04:39.04 you get to chose one commandment out of the ten. 00:04:39.07\00:04:42.22 And, you just, you have a free pass. 00:04:42.25\00:04:44.21 God is not going to punish you for it. 00:04:44.24\00:04:47.01 Everything is gonna be okay. 00:04:47.04\00:04:48.41 You can have that one commandment to break. 00:04:48.44\00:04:51.83 But according to the rules of this game 00:04:51.86\00:04:53.61 you have to break it continually 00:04:53.64\00:04:57.54 and to its full extent the rest of your life. 00:04:57.57\00:05:02.24 Now with that in mind let's go through the Ten Commandments. 00:05:02.27\00:05:06.84 And let's do it in reverse order 00:05:06.87\00:05:08.68 because as you'll notice 00:05:08.71\00:05:10.95 it creates a rather interesting progression of thought 00:05:10.98\00:05:13.80 as we get down to number one. 00:05:13.83\00:05:15.81 So let's start at number 10. 00:05:15.84\00:05:17.45 "Thou shalt not covet," okay? 00:05:17.48\00:05:20.15 Let's say that you chose "Thou shalt not covet" 00:05:20.18\00:05:23.00 as your free pass. 00:05:23.03\00:05:24.40 God's not gonna punish you for breaking that commandment. 00:05:24.43\00:05:27.12 You can--You have to break that commandment 00:05:27.15\00:05:31.08 now and for the rest of your life. 00:05:31.11\00:05:33.40 What will happen to you? 00:05:33.43\00:05:34.80 Well, I'll tell you what will happen. 00:05:34.83\00:05:36.20 You will not value what you have only what others have. 00:05:36.23\00:05:40.98 You will never be satisfied or content. 00:05:41.01\00:05:44.44 And for you, life will be unfair 00:05:44.47\00:05:47.07 because of what others have. 00:05:47.10\00:05:50.96 See that is the natural result 00:05:50.99\00:05:53.80 of breaking the Tenth Commandments. 00:05:53.83\00:05:56.94 Well, you might think, 00:05:56.97\00:05:58.34 that doesn't really sound too attractive. 00:05:58.37\00:06:00.93 Life doesn't sound all that attractive anymore, 00:06:00.96\00:06:03.67 if I keep on breaking 00:06:03.70\00:06:05.07 the "Thou shalt not covet" commandment. 00:06:05.10\00:06:06.55 So, well, let's go to number 9, 00:06:06.58\00:06:08.97 "Thou shalt not bear false witness." 00:06:09.00\00:06:10.87 What is the natural result of bearing false witness? 00:06:10.90\00:06:14.35 Well, first of all, you will get ahead 00:06:14.38\00:06:16.81 by destroying the reputation of others. 00:06:16.84\00:06:20.15 Secondly, you will have trouble dealing with reality 00:06:20.18\00:06:23.96 because you live in a world built on lies. 00:06:23.99\00:06:28.29 And third, you will live in the fear 00:06:28.32\00:06:31.78 that someone will destroy your reputation. 00:06:31.81\00:06:36.02 So what are the natural results 00:06:36.05\00:06:37.53 of breaking the ninth commandment, 00:06:37.56\00:06:39.43 "Bearing false witness?" 00:06:39.46\00:06:41.98 Maybe that doesn't seem so attractive. 00:06:42.01\00:06:44.59 Maybe I'll pass on "Thou shalt not covet." 00:06:44.62\00:06:47.60 "Bearing false witness" doesn't sound so good either 00:06:47.63\00:06:50.11 because after all if I destroy somebody else's reputation, 00:06:50.14\00:06:52.98 I have to live the rest of my life in fear 00:06:53.01\00:06:54.94 that somebody is gonna do the same thing to me. 00:06:54.97\00:06:57.52 Well, let's move on to number 8,. 00:06:57.55\00:06:59.61 This is the commandment against stealing. 00:06:59.64\00:07:03.29 If you continually break the eighth commandment 00:07:03.32\00:07:07.11 the rest of your life, 00:07:07.14\00:07:08.51 you will take whatever you can get away with. 00:07:08.54\00:07:11.61 You cannot value what you have 00:07:11.64\00:07:14.16 because after all you did not earn it. 00:07:14.19\00:07:17.40 Third, you will be afraid of what will be taken from you. 00:07:17.43\00:07:21.75 And finally, you will never know 00:07:21.78\00:07:24.45 the joy of accomplishment, just the pain of loss. 00:07:24.48\00:07:30.08 Well, that doesn't sound so attractive either. 00:07:30.11\00:07:33.83 Stealing the rest of your life 00:07:33.86\00:07:35.32 just doesn't have the attraction that maybe it did, 00:07:35.35\00:07:40.04 once you realize the full extent of the natural results 00:07:40.07\00:07:43.67 of breaking that commandment. 00:07:43.70\00:07:46.14 Well, here is the popular one. 00:07:46.17\00:07:47.54 Number 7, "committing adultery." 00:07:47.57\00:07:49.87 Let's take a free pass on that one, shall we? 00:07:49.90\00:07:52.93 What are the natural results of committing adultery? 00:07:52.96\00:07:55.54 First of all, your most intimate relationships 00:07:55.57\00:07:58.43 will never be permanent. 00:07:58.46\00:08:00.84 Secondly, you will live without real love or acceptance. 00:08:00.87\00:08:04.94 Why? Because you're unfaithful to everyone. 00:08:04.97\00:08:07.30 And finally, you will be lonely and betrayed. 00:08:07.33\00:08:13.01 It's funny how what you give 00:08:13.04\00:08:16.16 has a tendency to come back on you. 00:08:16.19\00:08:18.92 The natural results of committing adultery, 00:08:18.95\00:08:22.73 well, maybe that's not so attractive either. 00:08:22.76\00:08:24.62 Let's go on to number 6. 00:08:24.65\00:08:27.61 "Thou shalt not kill." 00:08:27.64\00:08:29.08 The commandment against murder. 00:08:29.11\00:08:31.10 The results of being a murderer are, 00:08:34.18\00:08:36.71 you will be a predator. 00:08:36.74\00:08:38.88 By cheapening the lives of others 00:08:38.91\00:08:40.82 you will cheapen your own. 00:08:40.85\00:08:43.96 You, the hunter, will also become the hunted. 00:08:43.99\00:08:49.08 And the result of all that is, you will live in terror. 00:08:49.11\00:08:54.59 Well, I certainly, 00:08:54.62\00:08:57.04 I don't want to take a free pass on 00:08:57.07\00:08:59.50 "Thou shalt not kill." 00:08:59.53\00:09:00.90 So let's move back to number 5, 00:09:00.93\00:09:03.88 "Honor Your Parents," 00:09:03.91\00:09:05.28 honor your father and your mother. 00:09:05.31\00:09:07.36 By the way this is the one commandment 00:09:07.39\00:09:09.36 that includes within it 00:09:09.39\00:09:11.83 the description of the natural results 00:09:11.86\00:09:15.09 of keeping that commandment. 00:09:15.12\00:09:18.10 So what's the natural result of not honoring your parents? 00:09:18.13\00:09:21.81 You will cut yourself off from those who gave your life. 00:09:21.84\00:09:24.61 You will grow bitter and lonely 00:09:24.64\00:09:27.10 and as a result die prematurely. 00:09:27.13\00:09:30.71 And finally, having given no honor, 00:09:30.74\00:09:33.39 your children will not know how to give you honor. 00:09:33.42\00:09:38.25 Interesting isn't it, how the next generation 00:09:38.28\00:09:41.12 always continues and sometimes even makes worse 00:09:41.15\00:09:46.20 the sins of the previous generation? 00:09:46.23\00:09:48.75 It's the natural results of sin. 00:09:48.78\00:09:52.00 Okay, the "Sabbath commandment." 00:09:52.03\00:09:54.26 Certainly we could take a free pass on that, couldn't we? 00:09:54.29\00:09:59.39 What are the natural results of completely and continually 00:09:59.42\00:10:04.07 breaking the Sabbath commandment not just in letter 00:10:04.10\00:10:08.26 but in spirit the rest of your life? 00:10:08.29\00:10:11.22 Now first of all, you will never truly rest 00:10:11.25\00:10:14.59 even when on vacation. 00:10:14.62\00:10:16.63 Secondly, you will always be anxious about doing enough, 00:10:16.66\00:10:19.96 getting enough, and being good enough 00:10:19.99\00:10:21.84 for everyone especially God. 00:10:21.87\00:10:25.51 And finally, success will lose its meaning 00:10:25.54\00:10:28.66 because of continual unrest. 00:10:28.69\00:10:33.08 Well, this seems to be getting worst not better. 00:10:33.11\00:10:38.44 So let's move on to commandment number 3, 00:10:38.47\00:10:41.92 "The prohibition against taking the Lord's name in vain." 00:10:41.95\00:10:45.32 What's the result of that? 00:10:45.35\00:10:47.95 First of all, you will make God's name a common 00:10:47.98\00:10:51.46 and even a filthy thing. 00:10:51.49\00:10:53.75 Secondly, you will have no sense of awe 00:10:53.78\00:10:56.63 or holiness in God's presence. 00:10:56.66\00:10:58.91 Third, you will fear and loathe anything 00:10:58.94\00:11:02.27 having to do with God's holiness and love. 00:11:02.30\00:11:06.66 So the results of breaking the third commandment 00:11:06.69\00:11:10.40 are not all that attractive either. 00:11:10.43\00:11:11.80 So let's go to number 2, 00:11:11.83\00:11:13.66 "The prohibition against graven images." 00:11:13.69\00:11:15.66 Now this seems like a small thing 00:11:15.69\00:11:17.46 but have ever really examined this commandment 00:11:17.49\00:11:19.62 to discover its depth also? 00:11:19.65\00:11:23.72 The natural results of breaking commandment number 2 00:11:23.75\00:11:26.22 are that you will try to create God in your own image. 00:11:26.25\00:11:31.19 Secondly, you will serve but at the same time 00:11:31.22\00:11:34.95 hate this inferior God because he is like yourself. 00:11:34.98\00:11:39.81 And finally, you will sink to the level of your Gods 00:11:39.84\00:11:43.30 of superstition, pride, vanity and lust. 00:11:43.33\00:11:49.68 And all of these is leading up to the very first commandment, 00:11:49.71\00:11:54.90 the commandment that says, 00:11:54.93\00:11:56.65 "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." 00:11:56.68\00:12:00.72 What are the natural results of breaking that commandment? 00:12:00.75\00:12:04.72 First of all, you will make things or people 00:12:04.75\00:12:09.05 your gods instead of God himself. 00:12:09.08\00:12:12.29 Secondly, the Gods you have chosen will disappoint you. 00:12:12.32\00:12:17.99 Third, you will have no savior 00:12:18.02\00:12:21.22 because you will have to be your own 00:12:21.25\00:12:24.78 and you will fail and you will die. 00:12:24.81\00:12:28.94 It's a terrible thing when you realize 00:12:31.34\00:12:35.40 what is really in these commandments. 00:12:35.43\00:12:38.38 What is God trying to protect His people from? 00:12:38.41\00:12:43.30 What are the natural results of ignoring God's commandments? 00:12:43.33\00:12:46.37 If we put all of that together, 00:12:46.40\00:12:48.39 what are the natural results of ignoring God's commandments? 00:12:48.42\00:12:52.57 Discontent, fear, pain, betrayal, terror, dishonor, 00:12:52.60\00:12:59.07 unrest, loathing, degradation, and finally death. 00:12:59.10\00:13:05.93 I submit to you, that the natural results 00:13:05.96\00:13:11.28 of breaking God's law is God's punishment. 00:13:11.31\00:13:17.60 Psalm 81:11-12 said, 00:13:17.63\00:13:20.55 "But my people would not listen to me, 00:13:20.58\00:13:22.95 Israel would not submit to me. 00:13:22.98\00:13:24.76 So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts 00:13:24.79\00:13:27.88 to follow their own devices." 00:13:27.91\00:13:32.18 Does God become a super natural gunslinger? 00:13:32.21\00:13:35.47 Does He come in with guns blazing to try to keep us from 00:13:35.50\00:13:39.84 doing some things that we'd like to do? 00:13:39.87\00:13:43.14 Is the universe one because God is simply stronger 00:13:43.17\00:13:46.85 than everybody else and has more firepower? 00:13:46.88\00:13:49.83 Is that how God's law keeping works? 00:13:49.86\00:13:53.67 Is that the law of the universe, 00:13:53.70\00:13:56.65 that God is the biggest bully around, 00:13:56.68\00:13:58.69 the biggest gunslinger, he has the most firepower? 00:13:58.72\00:14:03.53 I submit that it is exactly the opposite. 00:14:03.56\00:14:07.04 That God rather than trying to force 00:14:07.07\00:14:10.52 His law on us is trying to protect us 00:14:10.55\00:14:14.03 from the natural results of our own inclinations. 00:14:14.06\00:14:18.83 And He is trying to put a hedge around us. 00:14:18.86\00:14:21.74 Now I can hear some people objecting, 00:14:21.77\00:14:23.26 "Oh, yeah, but what about 00:14:23.29\00:14:25.03 the destruction of the wicked at the very end of time? 00:14:25.06\00:14:28.12 Isn't that finally when God becomes the big gunslinger?" 00:14:28.15\00:14:33.94 Is the universe one because God is stronger? 00:14:33.97\00:14:37.22 Does the second death finally violate God's character? 00:14:37.25\00:14:41.12 Does the loving Jesus finally get mean in the end? 00:14:41.15\00:14:47.59 I invite you to look at the cross. 00:14:47.62\00:14:50.05 You see there's only one time in all of human history 00:14:50.08\00:14:53.47 where the second death was demonstrated, 00:14:53.50\00:14:55.58 the sinner's death. 00:14:55.61\00:14:56.98 That is the second death. 00:14:57.01\00:14:58.93 There has only been one sinner's death in all of history 00:14:58.96\00:15:02.08 and that is Jesus' death on the cross. 00:15:02.11\00:15:05.60 Mark 15:34 quotes Jesus as crying out on the cross. 00:15:05.63\00:15:11.23 "And at the ninth hour, Jesus cried out in a loud voice, 00:15:11.26\00:15:14.44 'Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?' 00:15:14.47\00:15:16.68 Which mean, 'My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? 00:15:16.71\00:15:23.69 The symbol of Christ victory is not a badge 00:15:23.72\00:15:28.16 and a weapon rather it is a lamb and a cross. 00:15:28.19\00:15:34.99 Revelation 13:8 refers to 00:15:35.02\00:15:37.04 "The lamb that was slain from the creation of the world." 00:15:37.07\00:15:43.35 Just as Jesus died 00:15:43.38\00:15:44.75 from the natural results of separation 00:15:44.78\00:15:46.64 from God due to sin, 00:15:46.67\00:15:48.89 so the wicked in the end 00:15:48.92\00:15:50.81 will suffer the natural results of sin. 00:15:50.84\00:15:54.22 Now before you object and say, 00:15:54.25\00:15:55.62 "Oh yeah, but what about all the fire and brimstone." 00:15:55.65\00:15:57.53 Oh, yeah, it will be there. It's real. 00:15:57.56\00:15:59.63 Revelation talks about it. The cross was real too. 00:15:59.66\00:16:04.08 Jesus really did hang on the cross 00:16:04.11\00:16:07.31 but the cross did not kill him. 00:16:07.34\00:16:10.29 The weight of sins, not his own, 00:16:10.32\00:16:13.00 but the sins of the whole world are what killed him. 00:16:13.03\00:16:16.85 And what does sin cause? 00:16:16.88\00:16:18.50 It causes an eternal separation 00:16:18.53\00:16:22.26 between God and the person and the sinner. 00:16:22.29\00:16:26.54 And in Jesus case He felt 00:16:26.57\00:16:29.82 the actual real awful separation 00:16:29.85\00:16:32.69 between him and his father and that's why he cried out, 00:16:32.72\00:16:35.19 "My god, my God why have you forsaken Me?" 00:16:35.22\00:16:37.60 It was not the cross the kill Jesus Christ, 00:16:37.63\00:16:39.93 it was the weight of sin and the ensuing 00:16:39.96\00:16:43.35 separation from his father. 00:16:43.38\00:16:47.71 In contrast, notice 00:16:47.74\00:16:50.70 the words of Revelation 22 versus 12-17. 00:16:50.73\00:16:57.70 "Behold, I'm coming soon my reward is with me, 00:16:57.73\00:17:04.60 and I will give to everyone according to what he has done. 00:17:04.63\00:17:08.32 I'm the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, 00:17:08.35\00:17:11.70 the beginning and the end. 00:17:11.73\00:17:13.10 Blessed are those who wash their robes, 00:17:13.13\00:17:15.01 that they may have the right to tree of life 00:17:15.04\00:17:17.57 and may go through the gates into the city. 00:17:17.60\00:17:20.58 Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, 00:17:20.61\00:17:24.46 the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters 00:17:24.49\00:17:27.61 and everyone who loves and practice falsehood. 00:17:27.64\00:17:30.96 I, Jesus, have sent My angel 00:17:30.99\00:17:33.36 to give you this testimony for the churches. 00:17:33.39\00:17:35.59 I am the Root and the Offspring of David, 00:17:35.62\00:17:38.57 and the bright Morning star. 00:17:38.60\00:17:40.32 The spirit and the bride say, "Come!" 00:17:40.35\00:17:42.31 And let him who hears say, "Come!" 00:17:42.34\00:17:44.23 Whoever is thirsty let him come, and whoever wishes, 00:17:44.26\00:17:47.04 let him take the free gift of the water of life. 00:17:47.07\00:17:53.54 You see, in this scene out of the very end of time, 00:17:53.57\00:18:00.33 when Christ comes there will be two groups, 00:18:00.36\00:18:06.96 only two groups, no middle ground. 00:18:06.99\00:18:10.39 On one side are the lovers of falsehood. 00:18:10.42\00:18:14.54 On the other side those who answered 00:18:14.57\00:18:17.53 the invitation of the spirit and the bride. 00:18:17.56\00:18:22.02 It's not about God becoming a cosmic gunslinger 00:18:22.05\00:18:29.96 and finally winning the universe by force. 00:18:29.99\00:18:34.68 It's about giving His children choices. 00:18:34.71\00:18:41.39 What kind of choices? The choice for or against God. 00:18:41.42\00:18:48.91 Is God the kind of person we can trust? 00:18:48.94\00:18:52.06 Is God the kind of person that I would trust with my life 00:18:52.09\00:18:56.16 not only in this life but in the life to come? 00:18:56.19\00:19:00.92 It's one thing to trust someone for a year, 00:19:00.95\00:19:05.77 it's another thing to trust someone 00:19:05.80\00:19:07.84 for all of this life as we do 00:19:07.87\00:19:09.95 and we promise to love in church each other and marriage. 00:19:09.98\00:19:12.78 It's quite another thing to trust someone for eternity. 00:19:12.81\00:19:18.06 Is God trust worthy? 00:19:18.09\00:19:20.35 The issue in the great war 00:19:20.38\00:19:22.32 between Christ and Satan is over trust, 00:19:22.35\00:19:28.60 which is also translated faith. 00:19:28.63\00:19:32.08 Who do you trust? Who do have faith in? 00:19:32.11\00:19:35.53 How do we know that we can trust God? 00:19:35.56\00:19:39.00 Remember the result of violating those Ten Commandments? 00:19:39.03\00:19:44.84 You remember the awful consequences of going 00:19:44.87\00:19:51.58 against the principles of God's government? 00:19:51.61\00:19:56.23 You notice that when people break the commandments 00:19:56.26\00:20:00.35 they suffer the consequences not because God shoots them 00:20:00.38\00:20:05.93 or zaps them or takes revenge on them. 00:20:05.96\00:20:11.88 People suffer those consequences because that's a natural law. 00:20:11.91\00:20:17.33 The moral law of the universe is just 00:20:17.36\00:20:20.95 as real as the physical laws of the universe. 00:20:20.98\00:20:24.49 If you were to go outside and say, 00:20:24.52\00:20:26.66 "Well, today I want to break the law of gravity." 00:20:26.69\00:20:30.80 And you climb up on a tall building and you say, 00:20:30.83\00:20:34.34 "You know, for today anyway I'm just gonna forget 00:20:34.37\00:20:37.51 about the law of gravity, 00:20:37.54\00:20:38.91 I'll obey the law of gravity tomorrow." 00:20:38.94\00:20:41.76 And you jump out of the window. 00:20:41.79\00:20:43.91 And there is a sense of freedom 00:20:43.94\00:20:45.65 for a while until you hit bottom. 00:20:45.68\00:20:51.33 When we break God's moral law 00:20:51.36\00:20:54.21 there's also a sense of hitting bottom. 00:20:54.24\00:20:59.11 But just as there are-- just as there are the results, 00:20:59.14\00:21:04.45 the natural results of breaking those commandments, 00:21:04.48\00:21:07.39 there is on the other side 00:21:07.42\00:21:08.89 a positive description of what God's law really means. 00:21:08.92\00:21:13.41 The opposite of that is what God intends for His children. 00:21:13.44\00:21:17.49 The law then becomes a description of God himself. 00:21:17.52\00:21:21.59 His commands are a description of what He is like. 00:21:21.62\00:21:26.43 He is the one who brings 00:21:26.46\00:21:29.08 and notice this list of ten things 00:21:29.11\00:21:31.61 that are the positive opposites of the natural 00:21:31.64\00:21:34.24 results of breaking the commandments. 00:21:34.27\00:21:35.95 He brings contentment, security, safety, love, peace, 00:21:35.98\00:21:42.10 honor, rest, praise, glory, and eternal life. 00:21:42.13\00:21:48.87 That is what God wants. 00:21:48.90\00:21:51.44 So how do we know that we can trust God? 00:21:51.47\00:21:54.03 Because this is a person 00:21:54.06\00:21:58.34 who is described by those ten things. 00:21:58.37\00:22:01.57 This is a person who rather than 00:22:01.60\00:22:04.12 being without us for eternity 00:22:04.15\00:22:05.90 went to the cross and validated those ten things. 00:22:05.93\00:22:11.55 This is a person we can trust with why? 00:22:11.58\00:22:14.50 Because he does not want all of the bad things for us 00:22:14.53\00:22:18.35 described by the natural results of breaking 00:22:18.38\00:22:20.61 those Ten Commandments, 00:22:20.64\00:22:22.01 he wants to give us the contentment, 00:22:22.04\00:22:23.67 the security, the safety, love, peace, honor, 00:22:23.70\00:22:25.55 rest, praise, glory, and eternal life, 00:22:25.58\00:22:29.26 which are the blessings of the Ten Commandments. 00:22:29.29\00:22:32.44 Now do we achieve goodness or do we inherit eternal life 00:22:32.47\00:22:38.57 because we follow those Ten Commandments? 00:22:38.60\00:22:41.69 Well, to a certain extent, we will receive good natural 00:22:41.72\00:22:45.68 results in this life by obeying those Ten Commandments 00:22:45.71\00:22:50.49 but our salvation is not dependent 00:22:50.52\00:22:52.67 on our law keeping. 00:22:52.70\00:22:54.47 Rather our salvation is dependent on the law giver. 00:22:54.50\00:22:59.41 He is the one who saves us not the law. 00:22:59.44\00:23:02.52 The law describes at least in a very feeble way, 00:23:02.55\00:23:07.09 what kind of person God is, but it can't save. 00:23:07.12\00:23:11.59 We are only saved by being attracted to the one 00:23:11.62\00:23:15.76 that we know that we can trust. 00:23:15.79\00:23:18.24 You see those who would rather choose God over anything 00:23:18.27\00:23:21.24 even their own lives 00:23:21.27\00:23:23.14 will inherit all of these things. 00:23:23.17\00:23:24.97 No wonder sin will never rise again, 00:23:25.00\00:23:26.99 the universe will have been won for all of eternity. 00:23:27.02\00:23:30.55 You see it's not taking the town by force as Wyatt Earp 00:23:30.58\00:23:35.70 and his brother and Doc Holliday had to do. 00:23:35.73\00:23:38.43 It's not subduing evil by putting all bad guys in jail 00:23:38.46\00:23:44.89 although sometimes God has had to do things sort of like that. 00:23:44.92\00:23:49.36 What really wins the universe 00:23:49.39\00:23:51.99 for all of eternity is the universe trusting God. 00:23:52.02\00:23:58.35 God wins the war by being winsome. 00:23:58.38\00:24:02.84 And finally the end of time, when there is that lack of fire. 00:24:02.87\00:24:10.14 God is not being the cosmic gunslinger. 00:24:10.17\00:24:14.55 God is being the eternal lover of the universe 00:24:14.58\00:24:17.75 who will weep over the loss of His children 00:24:17.78\00:24:21.11 who willingly and knowingly and continually and rebelliously 00:24:21.14\00:24:27.42 chose to go against His principles of government, 00:24:27.45\00:24:30.08 who willingly would rather die then follow His government, 00:24:30.11\00:24:35.59 who would rather 00:24:35.62\00:24:37.99 have eternal death than serve God. 00:24:38.02\00:24:45.26 If we agree with God's principles of government 00:24:45.29\00:24:49.76 then we ought to start heaven now, don't you think? 00:24:49.79\00:24:54.93 And this is not a way of earning merit for salvation, 00:24:54.96\00:25:00.10 it's simply accepting the free gift of God 00:25:00.13\00:25:03.70 the salvation that he wants to give us 00:25:03.73\00:25:05.50 and then being so attracted to him that we start taking on 00:25:05.53\00:25:09.45 the characteristics of this eternal lover of the universe. 00:25:09.48\00:25:14.96 If we're going to do that, 00:25:14.99\00:25:17.52 where there is hatred let us sow love. 00:25:17.55\00:25:22.19 Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. 00:25:22.22\00:25:29.27 Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, love. 00:25:29.30\00:25:37.14 Where there is sadness, joy. 00:25:37.17\00:25:40.77 You see those are the things 00:25:40.80\00:25:42.17 that will really keep the universe safe for eternity. 00:25:42.20\00:25:48.38 I turn again to the Book of Revelation 00:25:48.41\00:25:52.45 where Jesus says, "Behold, I'm coming soon." 00:25:52.48\00:25:55.16 Do you look forward to that time? 00:25:55.19\00:25:57.88 Do you yearn for that time when God will cleanse 00:25:57.91\00:26:02.46 the universe of sin and suffering? 00:26:02.49\00:26:06.14 He says, my reward is with me 00:26:06.17\00:26:08.00 and I will give to everyone according to what he has done. 00:26:08.03\00:26:10.46 That's not a legalistic sentence to say that 00:26:10.49\00:26:15.42 He's going to give to you 00:26:15.45\00:26:17.16 because you've given something to Him. 00:26:17.19\00:26:20.06 What that means is, if you chosen Him, 00:26:20.09\00:26:23.41 if you've given your life to Him, 00:26:23.44\00:26:26.80 there will be evidence. 00:26:26.83\00:26:28.84 If you are won by him to such an extent 00:26:28.87\00:26:31.78 that you want the principles of love 00:26:31.81\00:26:34.96 that describe His character 00:26:34.99\00:26:37.02 then you will want to be with Him forever for eternity. 00:26:37.05\00:26:42.03 And that's what He means by 00:26:42.06\00:26:43.72 "Blessed are those who wash their robes 00:26:43.75\00:26:46.35 that they may have the right to the tree of life 00:26:46.38\00:26:49.26 and may go through the gates into the city. 00:26:49.29\00:26:52.52 The spirit and the bride say 00:26:52.55\00:26:53.92 come let him take the free gift of the water of life." 00:26:53.95\00:26:59.24
