At the Presbyterian Church in Elizabeth Town, New Jersey, 00:00:29.09\00:00:33.79 Pastor James Caldwell rose to deliver the morning sermon. 00:00:33.82\00:00:39.08 He placed his bible in the middle of the pulpit 00:00:39.11\00:00:43.88 and then he took out of his coat a loaded pistol 00:00:43.91\00:00:48.94 and he put it on one side of his bible, 00:00:48.97\00:00:51.85 and then he reached into his coat again 00:00:51.88\00:00:54.09 and he took another loaded pistol 00:00:54.12\00:00:57.89 and he put on the other side of his bible. 00:00:57.92\00:01:03.15 And then he proceeded to address the congregation 00:01:03.18\00:01:07.36 and deliver the morning sermon. 00:01:07.39\00:01:08.94 Now Pastor Caldwell was not concerned 00:01:11.14\00:01:14.24 about angry church members, 00:01:14.27\00:01:16.52 or people who might disagree with his sermon that day. 00:01:16.55\00:01:20.04 No, Pastor Caldwell was concerned with something 00:01:20.07\00:01:23.49 much more dangerous than that. 00:01:23.52\00:01:25.87 You see, Pastor Caldwell was part of the group of patriots 00:01:25.90\00:01:33.13 in the 13 colonies who were rebelling 00:01:33.16\00:01:36.39 against the tyranny of England at that time. 00:01:36.42\00:01:41.12 Here is a flag from the revolutionary war. 00:01:41.15\00:01:44.76 Notice the 13 stars on this flag representing the 13 colonies. 00:01:44.79\00:01:50.67 The words across the bottom read, 00:01:50.70\00:01:52.83 "Resistance to tyrants is obedience to God," 00:01:52.86\00:01:58.39 an indication of how strongly they felt about the war effort. 00:01:58.42\00:02:05.42 The year was 1780 just four years 00:02:05.45\00:02:09.09 after the declaration of Independence 00:02:09.12\00:02:11.72 and the American revolutionary war was in full swing. 00:02:11.75\00:02:14.71 The Americans had unfortunately suffered a series of defeats 00:02:14.74\00:02:18.91 and they were retreating across New Jersey. 00:02:18.94\00:02:21.89 And as they did so 00:02:21.92\00:02:23.37 many of Washington's sick and wounded soldiers found refuge 00:02:23.40\00:02:27.40 in the Elizabeth Town, Presbyterian Church. 00:02:27.43\00:02:29.64 Not only had Pastor Caldwell allowed his church 00:02:29.67\00:02:32.70 to be used as a barracks and a hospital 00:02:32.73\00:02:35.20 but he himself had become part of the war effort. 00:02:35.23\00:02:38.90 Besides being a Pastor, 00:02:38.93\00:02:40.33 he served as a Chaplain in the continental army. 00:02:40.36\00:02:43.49 He was even appointed Assistant Commissary General 00:02:43.52\00:02:47.36 and as such he obtained food, and clothes, 00:02:47.39\00:02:49.73 and other supplies for the troops. 00:02:49.76\00:02:52.14 The British had some names for Pastor Caldwell. 00:02:52.17\00:02:55.83 They called him "The Rebel Priest" 00:02:55.86\00:02:57.77 and "The High Priest of the Rebellion" 00:02:57.80\00:03:00.27 and they offered a reward for his capture. 00:03:00.30\00:03:04.05 And now you know why Pastor Caldwell 00:03:04.08\00:03:06.29 had two loaded pistols, 00:03:06.32\00:03:08.14 one on each side of his bible, as he preached that morning. 00:03:08.17\00:03:12.62 Well, the British Army followed 00:03:12.65\00:03:14.02 the retreating American across New Jersey 00:03:14.05\00:03:16.00 and they made a night raid on Elizabeth Town, 00:03:16.03\00:03:19.16 in order to capture American soldiers. 00:03:19.19\00:03:21.78 In that raid they burned Pastor Caldwell's 00:03:21.81\00:03:25.11 Presbyterian Church to the ground. 00:03:25.14\00:03:28.61 Now as Pastor Caldwell preached his sermon 00:03:28.64\00:03:31.64 he looked out at a congregation gathered 00:03:31.67\00:03:33.46 in a converted red barn. 00:03:33.49\00:03:36.47 Cornelius Hethfield Senior owned this barn 00:03:36.50\00:03:39.31 which was located just across the river 00:03:39.34\00:03:40.99 from the old church which was burned down. 00:03:41.02\00:03:43.54 Ironically, Hethfield's three sons were British sympathizers 00:03:43.57\00:03:47.36 and they had guided the soldiers 00:03:47.39\00:03:49.57 who raided the town and burned the church. 00:03:49.60\00:03:52.73 About four months later, the British Army, 00:03:52.76\00:03:55.02 encouraged by a victory at Charleston, South Carolina, 00:03:55.05\00:03:58.02 marched on Washington in New Jersey. 00:03:58.05\00:04:01.12 The Americans fell back from Elizabeth town 00:04:01.15\00:04:03.43 towards Connecticut farms in Springfield. 00:04:03.46\00:04:06.22 Now Connecticut farms 00:04:06.25\00:04:07.62 is where Pastor Caldwell had his house, the parsonage. 00:04:07.65\00:04:12.01 As the British soldiers advanced into Connecticut farms, 00:04:12.04\00:04:16.10 a soldier walked by the parsonage 00:04:16.13\00:04:18.38 and looked through the window and found 00:04:18.41\00:04:21.74 Pastor Caldwell's children surrounding his wife. 00:04:21.77\00:04:25.57 According to one report, 00:04:25.60\00:04:28.40 as the Pastor's wife surrounded by her children 00:04:28.43\00:04:30.82 and holding a baby in her arms looked out the window, 00:04:30.85\00:04:34.22 the soldier took aim and shot her in the chest. 00:04:34.25\00:04:39.22 After she died, the soldiers dragged her body outside 00:04:39.25\00:04:42.37 and then burned the house to the ground. 00:04:42.40\00:04:45.90 A month later, the battles continued 00:04:45.93\00:04:48.08 in the area of Springfield. 00:04:48.11\00:04:50.09 The American soldiers ran out of wadding for their guns. 00:04:50.12\00:04:53.77 James Caldwell immediately rode to a nearby Presbyterian church 00:04:53.80\00:04:58.06 and gathered up all the hymnals he could. 00:04:58.09\00:05:02.61 He rode his horse out to the battle field 00:05:02.64\00:05:04.92 and distributed the hymnals to the soldiers saying, 00:05:04.95\00:05:07.75 "Let's put Watts into them boys." 00:05:07.78\00:05:10.55 'Course Isaac Watts wrote 00:05:10.58\00:05:13.17 most of all of the hymns in that hymnal. 00:05:13.20\00:05:16.12 And here we see a water colored picture 00:05:16.15\00:05:18.35 of Pastor Caldwell handing out the hymnals to the soldiers. 00:05:18.38\00:05:24.72 They ripped the pages out of the hymnals 00:05:24.75\00:05:26.66 and used each page for wadding and stuffed it into their guns. 00:05:26.69\00:05:31.51 James Caldwell and his wife fought for freedom. 00:05:31.54\00:05:36.52 They along with many others paid the price 00:05:36.55\00:05:39.96 for our freedom, here in this country. 00:05:39.99\00:05:43.70 There is one who sacrificed far more 00:05:43.73\00:05:46.54 in order to give us freedom. 00:05:46.57\00:05:48.62 Not just freedom in this life, but freedom forever. 00:05:48.65\00:05:53.67 "For God so loved the world," says John 3:16, 00:05:53.70\00:05:57.39 "that he gave his one and only Son, 00:05:57.42\00:06:00.44 that whoever believes in him 00:06:00.47\00:06:02.13 shall not perish but have eternal life. 00:06:02.16\00:06:05.26 For God did not send his Son into the world 00:06:05.29\00:06:08.05 to condemn the world, 00:06:08.08\00:06:09.96 but to save the world through him. 00:06:09.99\00:06:12.41 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, 00:06:12.44\00:06:14.46 but whoever does not believe stands condemned already 00:06:14.49\00:06:17.33 because he has not believed 00:06:17.36\00:06:19.26 in the name of God's one and only Son." 00:06:19.29\00:06:23.57 Who was this Son of God? 00:06:23.60\00:06:26.96 Who was this Jesus? 00:06:26.99\00:06:30.48 who paid the price for our freedom? 00:06:30.51\00:06:35.92 It's one thing for Pastor Caldwell, 00:06:35.96\00:06:39.34 who by the way died before the war was over 00:06:39.37\00:06:42.59 and his wife who was shot 00:06:42.62\00:06:45.57 while surrounded by her children. 00:06:45.60\00:06:46.97 It's one thing for two patriots to die for our freedom. 00:06:47.00\00:06:51.04 We can in a sense say that they died 00:06:51.07\00:06:54.28 so that we could be free. 00:06:54.31\00:06:57.22 But of course, it took the deaths 00:06:57.25\00:06:58.85 of many, many, many other people 00:06:58.88\00:07:01.50 in order to accomplish the goal of the Revolutionary War. 00:07:01.53\00:07:06.53 We can't say that Pastor Caldwell and his wife 00:07:06.56\00:07:09.32 are completely and totally and solely responsible 00:07:09.35\00:07:12.92 for our freedom. 00:07:12.95\00:07:14.54 It took a lot of other people, besides. 00:07:14.57\00:07:17.02 So how is it that Jesus Christ is qualified to be our Savior? 00:07:17.05\00:07:22.49 How could his death set us free? 00:07:22.52\00:07:28.24 What is the price of freedom? 00:07:28.27\00:07:30.37 And what qualified Jesus Christ to pay that price? 00:07:30.40\00:07:34.01 Well, we've got a lot of text in the bible to consult, 00:07:34.04\00:07:37.66 in order to find the answer to this question. 00:07:37.69\00:07:40.25 And we're going to turn first of all to Philippians 2:5, 00:07:40.28\00:07:45.41 Philippians 2, beginning with verse 5. 00:07:45.44\00:07:50.13 Here Paul says, "Your attitude should be the same 00:07:50.16\00:07:52.30 as Jesus Christ, Who, being in very nature God," 00:07:52.33\00:07:56.41 listen to his language here, "in very nature God, 00:07:56.44\00:07:59.41 did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 00:07:59.44\00:08:03.94 but made himself nothing, 00:08:03.97\00:08:05.95 taking the very nature of a servant, 00:08:05.98\00:08:09.74 being made in human likeness. 00:08:09.77\00:08:12.65 And being found in appearance as a man, 00:08:12.68\00:08:15.13 he humbled himself and became obedient to death, 00:08:15.16\00:08:19.01 even death on a cross." 00:08:19.04\00:08:22.44 You see, there's basically 00:08:22.47\00:08:25.24 two groups of texts in the bible. 00:08:25.27\00:08:29.53 One group of text says that Jesus was like us, He was human. 00:08:29.56\00:08:34.37 This text Philippians 2:5-8 00:08:34.40\00:08:37.00 is the first text in that group of texts. 00:08:37.03\00:08:39.25 Jesus was like us. He was completely, 100% human. 00:08:39.28\00:08:44.22 There's another group of texts which we will get to, 00:08:44.25\00:08:45.98 in a moment that says, Jesus was not like us. He was sinless. 00:08:46.01\00:08:49.51 Let's turn now to Romans 8:3. 00:08:49.54\00:08:53.58 Romans 8:3. 00:08:53.61\00:08:57.31 "For what the law was powerless to do 00:08:57.34\00:08:59.97 in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, 00:09:00.00\00:09:03.20 God did by sending his own Son 00:09:03.23\00:09:05.90 in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. 00:09:05.93\00:09:11.17 And so he condemned sin in sinful man. 00:09:11.20\00:09:15.63 " Now notice the language here, "the likeness of sinful man." 00:09:15.66\00:09:20.63 The bible here, the original Greek text does not indicate 00:09:22.30\00:09:25.68 that He just looked like a man. 00:09:25.71\00:09:27.62 The likeness of sinful man 00:09:27.65\00:09:29.49 meant that He was really a man, completely a man. 00:09:29.52\00:09:32.55 Combined with the previous text in Philippians, 00:09:32.58\00:09:35.03 we know that Jesus Christ was not just pretending to be human. 00:09:35.06\00:09:38.69 He didn't just look like He was human, 00:09:38.72\00:09:41.05 He really was human. 00:09:41.08\00:09:42.90 And if you need more evidence, let's turn to Hebrews 2:11. 00:09:42.93\00:09:48.22 Hebrews 2, verse 11. 00:09:48.25\00:09:51.82 "Both the one who makes men holy 00:09:58.06\00:10:01.22 and those who are made holy are of the same family." 00:10:01.25\00:10:05.61 That's pretty plain, isn't it? Let's read on. 00:10:05.64\00:10:07.78 "So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers. 00:10:07.81\00:10:11.76 He says, 'I will declare your name to my brothers. 00:10:11.79\00:10:14.67 In the presence of the congregation 00:10:14.70\00:10:16.28 I will sing your praises.' 00:10:16.31\00:10:17.81 And again, 'I will put my trust in him.' 00:10:17.84\00:10:20.68 And again He says, 00:10:20.71\00:10:22.08 'Here am I, and the children God has given me.' 00:10:22.11\00:10:25.81 Since the children have flesh and blood," 00:10:25.84\00:10:27.58 Listen to this, "Since the children have flesh and blood, 00:10:27.61\00:10:29.77 he too shared in their humanity 00:10:29.80\00:10:32.99 so that by his death he might destroy him 00:10:33.02\00:10:36.62 who holds the power of death, that is, the devil, 00:10:36.65\00:10:39.32 and free those who all their lives 00:10:39.35\00:10:41.56 were held in slavery by their fear of death. 00:10:41.59\00:10:45.07 For surely it is not angels he helps, 00:10:45.10\00:10:48.07 but Abraham's descendants. 00:10:48.10\00:10:50.97 For this reason he had to be made," 00:10:51.00\00:10:54.56 watch this closely "like his brothers in every way, 00:10:54.59\00:11:00.13 in order that he might become 00:11:00.16\00:11:01.74 a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, 00:11:01.77\00:11:05.31 and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. 00:11:05.34\00:11:09.25 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, 00:11:09.28\00:11:13.10 he is able to help those who are being tempted." 00:11:13.13\00:11:17.93 There is no room to doubt. 00:11:17.96\00:11:20.41 Jesus was like us in every human way possible. 00:11:20.44\00:11:27.04 He was completely and 100% human. 00:11:27.07\00:11:32.10 But there is a second group of texts 00:11:32.13\00:11:33.87 and we need to discuss those right now. 00:11:33.90\00:11:36.09 The second group of texts says 00:11:36.12\00:11:37.66 that Jesus was not like us, He was sinless. 00:11:37.69\00:11:41.37 And those texts include 2 Corinthians 5:21, 00:11:41.40\00:11:44.80 1 John 3:5, and John 14:30. 00:11:44.83\00:11:47.58 Let's turn to our first one, 2 Corinthians 5:21. 00:11:47.61\00:11:53.95 2 Corinthians 5:21. 00:11:53.98\00:11:58.31 "God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, 00:12:03.73\00:12:09.75 so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." 00:12:09.78\00:12:16.13 Notice that there is a distinct difference between 00:12:16.16\00:12:21.03 Jesus' humanity and our humanity and that has to do with sin. 00:12:21.06\00:12:26.71 "Him who had no sin," says 2 Corinthians 5:21. 00:12:26.74\00:12:31.64 Okay, now we're going to turn 00:12:31.67\00:12:33.04 almost the end of the bible to 1 John 3:5. 00:12:33.07\00:12:37.84 1 John 3 verse 5. 00:12:37.87\00:12:43.45 "But you know that he appeared 00:12:43.48\00:12:46.23 so that he might take away our sins. 00:12:46.27\00:12:49.77 And in him is no sin." 00:12:49.80\00:12:54.54 Once again, there is a distinct difference 00:12:54.57\00:12:57.19 between the humanity of fallen, sinful human beings 00:12:57.22\00:13:02.68 and the humanity of Christ. 00:13:02.71\00:13:05.48 Jesus is just as much human 00:13:05.51\00:13:07.25 as we are with one important exception 00:13:07.28\00:13:10.91 and that is He did not have any sin. 00:13:10.94\00:13:14.39 He didn't have any sin on Him. He didn't have any sin in Him. 00:13:14.42\00:13:18.44 One more text, John 14:30. 00:13:18.47\00:13:22.76 This is the gospel of John now. 00:13:22.79\00:13:25.68 John 14 verse 30. 00:13:25.71\00:13:30.57 This is Jesus speaking. 00:13:30.60\00:13:31.99 He's been comforting His disciples. 00:13:32.02\00:13:33.83 This is a talk that He was having with His disciples 00:13:33.86\00:13:37.17 just before He went to the cross. 00:13:37.20\00:13:39.98 "I will not speak with you much longer," 00:13:40.01\00:13:42.19 He says "for the prince of this world is coming." 00:13:42.22\00:13:46.07 Now notice what He says next. 00:13:46.10\00:13:47.67 "He has no hold on me." 00:13:47.70\00:13:52.60 You say, what does that mean? 00:13:52.63\00:13:54.00 What does it mean, "He has no hold on me?" 00:13:54.03\00:13:56.09 The prince of this world is the devil, 00:13:58.40\00:14:00.71 Satan, that terrorist of the universe. 00:14:00.74\00:14:06.17 And because of our fallen natures, 00:14:06.20\00:14:09.11 because of our sinful condition Satan has a hold on us. 00:14:09.14\00:14:13.82 He has something in us he can take advantage of. 00:14:13.85\00:14:16.71 But that condition did not exist in Jesus Christ. 00:14:16.74\00:14:20.07 Jesus himself said, the prince of this world is coming, 00:14:20.10\00:14:22.76 but he has no hold on me. 00:14:22.79\00:14:27.04 Now if we put all this together, what do we have? 00:14:27.07\00:14:30.56 We know that Jesus was 100% human. 00:14:30.59\00:14:34.83 We also know that He was a 100% divine. 00:14:34.86\00:14:38.86 Now this isn't supposed to make Mathematical sense, 00:14:38.89\00:14:42.84 in the human sense of the word, 00:14:42.87\00:14:45.43 but we-- we go by what the bible says. 00:14:45.46\00:14:47.84 He was 100% human and He was sinless. 00:14:47.87\00:14:55.17 But the question is, how does all this give us freedom? 00:14:55.20\00:14:58.07 How does this qualify Jesus to be our All Sufficient Savior? 00:14:58.10\00:15:03.50 Why does Jesus' sacrifice on the cross 00:15:03.53\00:15:06.61 pay the price for our freedom? 00:15:06.64\00:15:10.57 First, Jesus was the only person in the universe 00:15:10.60\00:15:14.90 that could do anything about our freedom. 00:15:14.93\00:15:17.90 He was uniquely qualified. 00:15:17.93\00:15:19.88 He was fully human and fully God. 00:15:19.91\00:15:22.83 He was completely human like us, 00:15:22.86\00:15:25.31 but He was unlike us in that He was without sin. 00:15:25.34\00:15:31.03 1 Corinthians 15:45, describes Him this way. 00:15:31.06\00:15:36.54 "So it is written, 'The first man Adam became a living being,' 00:15:36.57\00:15:42.20 the last man Adam, a lifegiving spirit." 00:15:42.23\00:15:47.83 You understand the significance of that text? 00:15:47.86\00:15:50.82 Jesus is called the second Adam. 00:15:50.85\00:15:55.00 In other words He won the battle where Adam lost it. 00:15:55.03\00:16:00.23 What Adam lost in the Garden of Eden 00:16:00.26\00:16:02.48 because of the temptation 00:16:02.51\00:16:03.95 through the serpent in the tree and his wife Eve. 00:16:03.98\00:16:07.21 Where Adam was tempted and fell, 00:16:07.24\00:16:11.44 Jesus Christ came and won the battle. 00:16:11.47\00:16:15.76 Not only that, 00:16:15.79\00:16:18.43 He went to the cross and bore the results, 00:16:18.46\00:16:21.58 not of His own sin because He didn't have any. 00:16:21.61\00:16:24.07 But He bore the results of your sin and my sin 00:16:24.10\00:16:28.37 He paid the price for our freedom. 00:16:28.40\00:16:30.63 Romans 5:6-8. 00:16:30.66\00:16:33.44 Romans 5:6-8 says, "You see, at just the right time, 00:16:42.22\00:16:46.14 when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 00:16:46.17\00:16:50.35 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, 00:16:50.38\00:16:53.14 though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. 00:16:53.17\00:16:56.72 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this, 00:16:56.75\00:16:59.70 While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." 00:16:59.73\00:17:06.61 So you see, Jesus Christ was imminently qualified 00:17:06.64\00:17:11.99 to pay the price for our freedom. 00:17:12.02\00:17:14.39 First because He was both God and man, 00:17:14.42\00:17:18.54 second because He did not fall. 00:17:18.57\00:17:22.01 He did not lose the battle where Adam did. 00:17:22.04\00:17:25.86 And third because He went to the cross 00:17:25.89\00:17:28.75 and He bore the sins of the whole world on Himself. 00:17:28.78\00:17:33.86 In Him was no sin 00:17:33.89\00:17:35.77 but there was our sin on Him. 00:17:35.80\00:17:41.39 This gives us peace. Why? 00:17:41.42\00:17:45.98 When you're in the middle of a war, 00:17:46.01\00:17:48.50 we say there's no peace because we're in war. 00:17:48.53\00:17:52.63 But what if you knew that the battle was already won? 00:17:52.66\00:17:56.47 What if you knew the outcome before it ever happened? 00:17:56.50\00:17:59.74 Wouldn't that give you a sense of peace, 00:17:59.77\00:18:01.49 even in the midst of the war? 00:18:01.52\00:18:03.17 And that's how Jesus Christ 00:18:03.20\00:18:05.09 gives us peace in our everyday lives now. 00:18:05.12\00:18:08.28 Because of what He did on the cross the battle is won. 00:18:08.31\00:18:12.25 We have freedom that has been paid for with His blood. 00:18:12.28\00:18:17.07 And because we know through His sacrifice on the cross 00:18:17.10\00:18:21.16 we know the end result of this battle 00:18:21.19\00:18:23.95 with the terrorist of the universe, Satan, 00:18:23.98\00:18:26.71 we can have peace. 00:18:26.74\00:18:28.18 Notice the words of the gospel of John. 00:18:28.21\00:18:31.96 John 16:33. 00:18:31.99\00:18:34.53 John 16:33 says, "I have told you these things," 00:18:40.15\00:18:43.72 this is Jesus talking, "so that in me you may have peace. 00:18:43.75\00:18:49.51 In this world you will have trouble. 00:18:49.54\00:18:51.92 But take heart. I have overcome the world." 00:18:51.95\00:18:58.12 In spite of the fact, that we live in a war zone today, 00:18:58.15\00:19:02.92 we know that we can have peace and victory 00:19:02.95\00:19:06.08 because what Jesus already did for us on the cross. 00:19:06.11\00:19:11.90 Like Pastor James Caldwell 00:19:11.93\00:19:13.45 who had to preach with two loaded pistols 00:19:13.48\00:19:15.59 on his pulpit and like his wife 00:19:15.62\00:19:17.45 who was shot to death, we live in a war zone. 00:19:17.48\00:19:22.05 It is a temporary war zone, but it's still a war zone. 00:19:22.08\00:19:25.73 The good news is we know who wins. 00:19:25.76\00:19:29.62 Jesus has already paid the price of victory. 00:19:29.65\00:19:31.89 Because of that we can be at peace, 00:19:31.92\00:19:35.15 even though we're still at war with the enemy. 00:19:35.18\00:19:38.62 Satan will throw everything he can at us, 00:19:38.65\00:19:41.96 to convince us that we're not free. 00:19:41.99\00:19:44.14 But don't be fooled, 00:19:44.17\00:19:45.62 in spite of what happens in this world, 00:19:45.65\00:19:47.29 the only real freedom is found in Jesus Christ. 00:19:47.32\00:19:52.09 In 1873, a businessman named Horatio Spafford 00:19:52.12\00:19:56.30 was recovering from his financial losses 00:19:56.33\00:19:59.23 resulting from the great Chicago fire of 1871. 00:19:59.26\00:20:03.62 He and his wife felt that they needed to get away 00:20:03.65\00:20:07.50 and so they planned a trip to Europe together. 00:20:07.53\00:20:11.10 Spafford and his wife had four girls, 00:20:11.13\00:20:14.48 four daughters ranging in age from 18 months to 12 years. 00:20:14.51\00:20:19.71 Something came up at the last moment 00:20:19.74\00:20:21.28 just before he was to sail with his family off to Europe. 00:20:21.31\00:20:24.40 And so he sent his wife and his children on ahead of him. 00:20:24.43\00:20:29.09 And so they got on the boat and headed out, 00:20:29.12\00:20:33.22 out of the harbor towards Europe. 00:20:33.25\00:20:38.85 They sailed on a ship called the "Ville Du Havre" 00:20:38.88\00:20:42.80 which just as it went past the coast of Newfoundland 00:20:42.83\00:20:46.68 struck another English ship. 00:20:46.71\00:20:51.15 It collided and they sank within a half an hour. 00:20:51.18\00:20:54.90 Anna Spafford was rescued 00:20:54.93\00:20:57.16 but all four of their girls were lost. 00:20:57.19\00:21:01.50 Anna Spafford says that the baby 00:21:01.53\00:21:04.56 was literally washed from her grasp. 00:21:04.59\00:21:09.70 In those days, news didn't travel as fast as it does today. 00:21:09.73\00:21:16.01 And so, Mr. Spafford didn't know anything until ten days later 00:21:16.04\00:21:22.10 when the survivors finally arrived in Wales. 00:21:22.13\00:21:26.56 Finally, his wife Anna was able to send a cable to her husband 00:21:26.59\00:21:31.14 and the message contained just two words, "Saved alone." 00:21:31.17\00:21:39.12 Well, Mr. Spafford immediately packed his bags 00:21:39.15\00:21:42.59 and sailed to England to be with his wife. 00:21:42.62\00:21:46.40 And together they tried to find some consolation by meeting 00:21:46.43\00:21:50.98 with the very famous Evangelist Dwight L. Moody. 00:21:51.01\00:21:55.26 Moody reported that he did his best to comfort them, 00:21:55.29\00:21:57.59 but he also noted that the couple although grieving 00:21:57.62\00:22:01.74 was able to trust God. 00:22:01.77\00:22:04.93 "It is well," Mr. Spafford said. 00:22:04.96\00:22:07.72 "The will of God be done." 00:22:07.75\00:22:11.52 Would you be able to say 00:22:11.55\00:22:12.92 that in the phase of such horrendous tragedy? 00:22:12.95\00:22:17.69 It's hard to know how one would react in a situation like that. 00:22:17.72\00:22:25.02 But I believe in such extreme cases, 00:22:25.05\00:22:27.55 grace is given when it's needed. 00:22:27.58\00:22:31.84 And Horatio Spafford and his wife Anna, 00:22:31.87\00:22:34.50 although suffering the complete loss of their little family, 00:22:34.53\00:22:37.53 their four girls, were able to say, 00:22:37.56\00:22:40.95 in spite of their grief, 00:22:40.98\00:22:43.12 "It is well, God's will be done." 00:22:43.15\00:22:47.06 Upon returning to the United States, 00:22:47.09\00:22:49.31 Mr. Spafford took the two word' cable, "Saved alone" 00:22:49.34\00:22:55.90 and had it framed and put up in his office. 00:22:55.93\00:22:58.81 A rather strange memento, you might think. 00:22:58.84\00:23:01.94 But two years later, Ira Sankey, 00:23:01.97\00:23:05.11 who was the musician that worked with Dwight L. Moody, 00:23:05.14\00:23:07.93 came through the area and visited with Horatio. 00:23:07.96\00:23:11.72 And once again they sat down 00:23:11.75\00:23:13.15 and they discussed this horrible tragedy 00:23:13.18\00:23:14.95 that had happened two years before. 00:23:14.98\00:23:17.89 Once again, 00:23:17.92\00:23:19.43 Horatio expressed his complete trust in God. 00:23:19.46\00:23:26.21 And then a very interesting thing happened, 00:23:26.24\00:23:29.37 Horatio out of his, out of his grief 00:23:29.40\00:23:33.75 and remembering this horrible tragedy 00:23:33.78\00:23:36.35 when all four of his girls 00:23:36.38\00:23:38.64 had simply been swept out of his life, 00:23:38.67\00:23:42.74 but also, at the same time 00:23:42.77\00:23:45.71 relying completely on God 00:23:45.74\00:23:48.57 who has paid the price for our freedom, 00:23:48.60\00:23:53.13 who gives us peace even in the midst of a war zone. 00:23:53.16\00:23:56.97 Horatio Spafford sat down and began to write a song. 00:23:57.00\00:24:02.24 "When peace like a river, attendeth my way, 00:24:02.27\00:24:07.28 When sorrows like sea billows roll, 00:24:07.31\00:24:10.71 Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, 00:24:10.74\00:24:14.11 It is well, it is well, with my soul." 00:24:14.14\00:24:19.54 Whenever you sing that hymn, 00:24:19.57\00:24:20.94 I hope you remember 00:24:20.97\00:24:22.42 Horatio Spafford and his wife Anna. 00:24:22.45\00:24:25.97 Songs like this were not written out of easy times. 00:24:26.00\00:24:30.86 Songs like this are not written 00:24:30.89\00:24:32.77 by--by people with circumstances that are 00:24:32.80\00:24:39.18 just blessed all time. 00:24:39.21\00:24:42.03 Songs like this are written when faith is tested 00:24:42.06\00:24:47.46 and when you don't have anywhere else to go, 00:24:47.49\00:24:50.86 but to Jesus. 00:24:50.89\00:24:52.97 You can know that He has already paid the price for your freedom. 00:24:53.00\00:24:59.58 And because Jesus, 00:24:59.61\00:25:01.69 that perfect human being, 100% human, 00:25:01.72\00:25:07.21 100% God and completely sinless, 00:25:07.24\00:25:11.24 because He voluntarily went to the cross 00:25:11.27\00:25:15.05 and because He bore all the sins of the whole world. 00:25:15.08\00:25:18.99 It means that you and I know, 00:25:19.02\00:25:20.75 that in spite of the fact 00:25:20.78\00:25:22.15 that we live in the midst of a war zone. 00:25:22.18\00:25:24.16 In spite of the fact 00:25:24.19\00:25:25.56 that horrible things happen, people die, 00:25:25.59\00:25:28.85 children are swept away from their parents. 00:25:28.88\00:25:32.36 In spite of that we know that this is not the end. 00:25:32.39\00:25:36.78 We know that there is a better day coming. 00:25:36.81\00:25:39.13 We know that the Son of God 00:25:39.16\00:25:41.69 went to the cross because He couldn't live 00:25:41.72\00:25:44.94 without you and me for eternity. 00:25:44.97\00:25:47.97 And because of that, we can sing just like Mr. Spafford, 00:25:48.00\00:25:52.88 "When peace like a river, attendeth my way, 00:25:52.91\00:25:57.32 Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, 00:25:57.35\00:25:59.90 It is well, it is well, with my soul." 00:25:59.93\00:26:05.88 What does it take to be able to sing that song 00:26:05.91\00:26:11.08 in the phase of the most horrible personal tragedy? 00:26:11.11\00:26:15.56 I'll tell you what it is. 00:26:15.59\00:26:17.39 When you know Jesus, 00:26:17.42\00:26:18.86 when you know the kind of person that He really is, 00:26:18.89\00:26:22.10 when you know that Jesus 00:26:22.13\00:26:24.73 didn't go to the cross because God was angry with us. 00:26:24.76\00:26:29.52 He didn't lay down his life because God was mad at us. 00:26:29.55\00:26:33.43 He went to the cross because the heart of God was breaking, 00:26:33.46\00:26:36.67 because his children were going to be lost unless, 00:26:36.70\00:26:40.58 he undertook a rescue mission. 00:26:40.61\00:26:42.97 And he knew the rescue mission was risky. 00:26:43.00\00:26:45.80 He knew that it would be costly. 00:26:45.83\00:26:47.59 He knew that it would require the ultimate price. 00:26:47.62\00:26:53.38 Some people go into battle not knowing what will happen. 00:26:53.41\00:26:59.16 But I can tell you Jesus knew 00:26:59.19\00:27:02.50 what was going to happen when He went into battle. 00:27:02.53\00:27:05.59 When He bowed in grief, and sorrow, 00:27:05.62\00:27:10.21 and loneliness there in the Garden of Gethsemane 00:27:10.24\00:27:14.19 and when he prayed, 00:27:14.22\00:27:15.87 "Father if it's your will, let this cup pass from me." 00:27:15.90\00:27:20.45 You can be sure that Jesus knew exactly 00:27:20.48\00:27:23.08 what the price of our salvation was. 00:27:23.11\00:27:27.48 But Praise God, He paid it for us. 00:27:27.51\00:27:30.37 Praise God, He was not afraid 00:27:30.40\00:27:33.47 to face the devil on his turf, even. 00:27:33.50\00:27:36.11 Praise God that He could go to the cross 00:27:36.14\00:27:38.59 and not only die on the cross, 00:27:38.62\00:27:40.30 but go to the tomb and be resurrected for you and me. 00:27:40.33\00:27:46.14 Knowing that Christ has paid the price of freedom, 00:27:46.17\00:27:50.07 that He has won the war already, 00:27:50.10\00:27:52.34 we can know that no matter what happens, 00:27:52.37\00:27:55.26 It is well with my soul. 00:27:55.29\00:27:57.46
