the mentality of God's people

the bondage of slavery in Egypt.

As God's presence went with them

miracles on their behalf.

But no matter how
many wonders they witnessed

his promises were of

no benefit to them

When they came to the land that

they saw the inhabitants of

And they felt in comparison

like they were
mere grasshoppers.

God's people were literally

shut out of the Promised Land

their sin of unbelief.

Their arrogance of
doubting God's testimony

was like a slap
in the face of God.

Their refusal to trust

they regarded God as a liar.

today with a story

about a farmer in a banker.

Two Christian friends

this farmer

and his banker,
00:04:03.00\00:04:04.22
were talking about their
00:04:04.27\00:04:05.38
joint Ministry
efforts for Christ.

The banker dressed in
a three-piece suit said,

"I have an
anointing from the Lord."

Now outfitted it in overalls
00:04:13.60\00:04:16.55
the farmer glanced down
00:04:16.60\00:04:17.98
and began digging
the toes of his boot

into the soil
00:04:20.67\00:04:22.12
and he said,
00:04:22.17\00:04:23.52
"Oh Mercy, I love the Lord

"and I serve Him
with all my heart but

"I wouldn't dare say that

"I'm anointed."

Which of these
men acted in humility?

Christ was the
anointed one of God

filled with power from on high.

Now wasn't the banker boasting

when he claimed that

same annoying thing?

Aren't we naturally drawn

to simple self abasing

attitude of the farmer?

story in churches

our upside down thinking.

When I invite
audiences to vote for

the example of true humility

they almost always

the majority would choose

the farmer hands down

and they dismiss the banker

as a hypocrite.

Perhaps because
this story reminds us of

the Pharisee and
the tax collector.

The Bible account of two men
00:05:13.13\00:05:15.25
praying in the
temple is given in

the Gospel of Luke Chapter 18
00:05:17.37\00:05:20.12
And there a pompous Pharisee
00:05:20.17\00:05:22.45
stood praying before the Lord
00:05:22.50\00:05:24.42
and he was thanking God that
00:05:24.47\00:05:26.12
He wasn't like other sinners
00:05:26.17\00:05:28.45
and He began to
list his deeds of
00:05:28.50\00:05:30.78
religious performance.
00:05:30.83\00:05:32.55
And his judgmental attitude,
00:05:32.60\00:05:34.82
flowed from a spirit of
00:05:34.87\00:05:36.88
self righteousness
00:05:36.93\00:05:38.65
and it contradicted God's truth.

We're all sinners

in need of a Savior.

And we're all
counseled in the Bible

not to compare
ourselves to others.

Now, on the other hand,

and in contrast
the tax collector

begged for God's mercy.

Beating his breast

and confessing his
sins before the Lord.

And, his act of
humility agreed with

the council of God's word.

Can we compare the
actions of these two men,

the Pharisee and

the tax collector to

the banker and the farmer?

Yes.

I think we can.

But the results
might surprise you.

We must first,

at God's testimony,

of who we are in Christ.

Our experience may be

it doesn't make them truth.

Truth is measured
by only one standard.

The Holy Bible of God.

You know,

if the banker

and the farmer of
00:07:57.53\00:07:58.82
my imaginary scene

were abiding in Christ,

guest who the
Lord would endorse?

He would endorse the banker as
00:08:02.97\00:08:05.65
the humble speaking man.

Why?

By affirming he had an anointing
00:08:08.81\00:08:11.82
the banker the revealed that
00:08:11.87\00:08:14.05
he believed and humbly accepted
00:08:14.10\00:08:17.22
God's testimony.

Now while the poor farmer
00:08:18.80\00:08:20.58
thought he was being humble,
00:08:20.63\00:08:22.62
he exalted his own opinion
00:08:22.67\00:08:24.92
over the word of God.

He spoke either from ignorance

or from refusal

to accept

what the Bible teaches about

his identity in Christ.

Our lesson is this;

Even if we don't feel anointed

we must accept and agree that

we are -if that
is what God says.

We can't operate by feelings.

Feelings are too often

the defective product of

warped human reasoning.

Doubting God's word is

We're walking in error because

couple of reasons

we're in this
predicament in the first place.

For some,

the crisis of
identity results from

a shameful
neglect of Bible study.

We lived in a generation that

seeks quick escape patches from

the stresses of our world.

Entertainment has been

elevated to idolatry.

Many sacrifice
great chunks of time

following after
this coveted idol.

And Christians aren't
immune to this practice.

We can make many excuses to

sit mindlessly in front of

the television for hours.

"Oh I need to relax.

"My families doing it

"and I want to be with them.

"I deserve a break".

It's easy to become satisfied

with a meager
effort in Bible study.

And let me tell you something,

apathy is a
dangerous heart condition!

On the other hand,

there is a second group of us
00:10:55.90\00:10:58.38
who are devoted to Bible study.

Yet we still walk in

the darkness of
mistaken identity.

Our hearts don't overflow

with love, joy, and peace.

We aren't stirred to activity by

the zeal of the Holy Spirit.

We're impotent
instead of powerful.

And we can't figure out why!

In fearing others would

telling of my past mistakes

and how the Lord has

and brought me out of those.

Then on the other hand

maybe they share
with me just because

they know their
secret is safe with me!
