Hard to believe, 00:00:15.84\00:00:17.01 coming to the end of 12 presentations on David. 00:00:17.05\00:00:21.55 And it's been a journey began last January, 00:00:21.58\00:00:27.12 but we've learned also about Jesus along the way 00:00:27.16\00:00:30.13 because the Bible tells us that David was a man 00:00:30.16\00:00:33.53 after God's own heart. 00:00:33.56\00:00:35.93 And so as we are studying the character of David, 00:00:35.96\00:00:39.20 we're really finding out a lot about Jesus. 00:00:39.23\00:00:41.94 And he's a character that 00:00:41.97\00:00:44.17 almost everybody could relate to. 00:00:44.21\00:00:46.21 You know, they say different people 00:00:46.24\00:00:47.41 can relate to different characters, 00:00:47.44\00:00:49.71 and soldiers can relate to soldiers, 00:00:49.74\00:00:52.91 and the rich relate better to the rich, 00:00:52.95\00:00:55.72 and the poor to the poor. 00:00:55.75\00:00:56.79 But, you know, David went through 00:00:56.82\00:00:58.22 almost all of these experiences in his life. 00:00:58.25\00:01:02.92 He was poor, you can relate to David. 00:01:02.96\00:01:06.39 He was rich, at the end I'm going to talk about today, 00:01:06.43\00:01:10.77 fabulous wealth. 00:01:10.80\00:01:13.44 He was a stranger, David was forsaken by friends. 00:01:13.47\00:01:20.04 He was attacked by family. 00:01:20.08\00:01:23.71 He had to flee to a foreign land, 00:01:23.75\00:01:26.75 he was a refugee. 00:01:26.78\00:01:29.62 He was a soldier, he was an administrator. 00:01:29.65\00:01:33.19 He was a creative person. He was an architect. 00:01:33.22\00:01:35.99 I mean, David was just, 00:01:36.02\00:01:37.53 he did a little bit of everything. 00:01:37.56\00:01:40.00 And so just about everybody, you can find something 00:01:40.03\00:01:42.60 of themselves in life of David and find a way to relate. 00:01:42.63\00:01:47.37 Well, we're going to pick up today, 00:01:47.40\00:01:48.90 and our mission today really is to get from 2 Samuel 20. 00:01:48.94\00:01:53.91 Now, you find the life of David not only in 1 and 2 Samuel, 00:01:53.94\00:01:57.81 you also find it in 1 Chronicles, 00:01:57.85\00:02:01.15 they cover a lot of the same territory, 00:02:01.18\00:02:02.75 we've been using Samuel. 00:02:02.78\00:02:05.92 And we'll go to 1 Kings 2:10. 00:02:05.95\00:02:10.89 The period of time we're looking at represents 00:02:10.93\00:02:13.09 the last 10 years of his reign 00:02:13.13\00:02:15.40 which is why we've titled today's message, 00:02:15.43\00:02:17.70 "The Sunset Years of David's Life". 00:02:17.73\00:02:21.87 And we remember in our last study, 00:02:21.90\00:02:24.14 he survived this terrible rebellion 00:02:24.17\00:02:27.64 where his son, beautiful son who he loves so much, 00:02:27.68\00:02:30.38 Absalom rebelled against him, 00:02:30.41\00:02:33.25 wanted to even take his father's own life 00:02:33.28\00:02:35.15 and yet his father was willing to forgive. 00:02:35.18\00:02:38.62 We've learned from that experience, I mean, 00:02:38.65\00:02:40.99 the father is willing to forgive us 00:02:41.02\00:02:42.22 even though we, by our sins, took the life of His son, 00:02:42.26\00:02:46.06 but He loves us that much. 00:02:46.09\00:02:48.56 Well, they invited him back to Jerusalem 00:02:48.60\00:02:51.53 to lead out on the people of Judah, 00:02:51.57\00:02:53.37 but there was a brief rebellion that took place. 00:02:53.40\00:02:56.50 And you read about this in 2 Samuel 20, 00:02:56.54\00:02:59.44 a man by the name of Sheba, he blew a trumpet and said, 00:02:59.47\00:03:03.14 "Who do we... 00:03:03.18\00:03:04.25 we don't need to follow David, 00:03:04.28\00:03:06.01 he was from the tribe of Benjamin." 00:03:06.05\00:03:08.12 You remember, Saul was from Benjamin. 00:03:08.15\00:03:09.92 The Benjamites were feeling like 00:03:09.95\00:03:11.89 their tribe had been slighted when Saul was slain 00:03:11.92\00:03:15.56 that they really deserved the monarchy. 00:03:15.59\00:03:18.06 And so this rebellion went on, maybe for a few months. 00:03:18.09\00:03:21.56 And Joab took things in his own hands. 00:03:21.60\00:03:25.73 He should probably know, 00:03:25.77\00:03:27.17 the general who led under Absalom 00:03:27.20\00:03:31.37 for the people to attack David was named Amasa. 00:03:31.41\00:03:36.18 David, trying to bring the kingdom back together again 00:03:36.21\00:03:38.98 and since Joab had disobeyed a direct order 00:03:39.01\00:03:41.32 and killed Absalom, God said, 00:03:41.35\00:03:45.29 I should say David said to Joab, 00:03:45.32\00:03:47.16 "You can't be the general anymore. 00:03:47.19\00:03:49.26 Amasa is going to be the general." 00:03:49.29\00:03:51.46 Well, Joab said, "Boy, David, you're making bad decision. 00:03:51.49\00:03:54.46 You're not only were willing to let Absalom live 00:03:54.46\00:03:56.60 who could be a constant threat, now you want the general 00:03:56.63\00:03:58.87 that tried to kill you to be your general." 00:03:58.90\00:04:01.97 And so after Sheba rebelled, Joab killed Sheba 00:04:02.00\00:04:06.27 and then he killed Amasa, not in that order. 00:04:06.31\00:04:09.11 Joab kind of did his own thing sometimes. 00:04:09.14\00:04:14.15 So that was taken care of. 00:04:14.18\00:04:16.55 And then you get to 2 Samuel 21, 00:04:16.58\00:04:19.25 and this is a story a lot of people wonder about. 00:04:19.29\00:04:22.09 It says, "Now there was a famine in the days of David 00:04:22.12\00:04:25.59 for three years, year after year." 00:04:25.63\00:04:30.37 And the famine after three years 00:04:30.40\00:04:32.10 is not resolved for another six months, 00:04:32.13\00:04:34.10 you'll see. 00:04:34.14\00:04:35.67 So it ends up being a famine for three and a half years, 00:04:35.70\00:04:38.01 now does that sound familiar? 00:04:38.04\00:04:39.97 How long was a famine in the days of Elijah? 00:04:40.01\00:04:43.35 How long did Jesus teach? 00:04:43.38\00:04:45.11 Three and a half years. 00:04:45.15\00:04:46.15 You'll often find this, three and a half years, 00:04:46.18\00:04:47.78 even in the prophecies of Revelation. 00:04:47.82\00:04:50.19 So there's a famine for three years. 00:04:50.22\00:04:51.72 And David wants to know what the problem is, 00:04:51.75\00:04:53.52 and the Lord speaks to David, and he says, 00:04:53.56\00:04:56.06 "It's because of Saul..." 00:04:56.09\00:04:57.76 Well, Saul's been dead for years. 00:04:57.79\00:04:59.36 "And his blood thirsty house, meaning his sons, 00:04:59.39\00:05:03.57 because they killed the Gibeonites." 00:05:03.60\00:05:06.84 And what's that all about? 00:05:06.87\00:05:08.44 If you read your Bible, you'll find in Joshua 9 00:05:08.47\00:05:12.67 that the Gibeonites tricked the Israelites 00:05:12.71\00:05:15.51 into making a covenant that they would spare them 00:05:15.54\00:05:19.88 and let them live in the land and not a victim like 00:05:19.91\00:05:22.65 they did to other nations, they said, 00:05:22.68\00:05:23.89 "We'll be your servants but let us stay." 00:05:23.92\00:05:26.42 Joshua made a covenant, and even after that 00:05:26.45\00:05:29.09 people realized they've been tricked, they said, 00:05:29.12\00:05:30.39 "Let's just kill them." 00:05:30.43\00:05:31.49 Joshua said, "We've sworn in the name of the Lord, 00:05:31.53\00:05:33.93 they are servants, 00:05:33.96\00:05:35.16 we're going to let them live in the land, 00:05:35.20\00:05:36.46 we will protect them." 00:05:36.50\00:05:37.63 That went on for hundreds of years. 00:05:37.67\00:05:40.00 But Saul decided, and his sons probably persuaded him. 00:05:40.04\00:05:43.84 The Gibeonites tricked us, let's get even with them 00:05:43.87\00:05:46.04 and they began to attack and destroy the Gibeonites. 00:05:46.07\00:05:49.74 Well, because they broke, because Saul and his sons 00:05:49.78\00:05:52.25 broke the covenant of God. 00:05:52.28\00:05:53.98 Here you've got a famine happening years later. 00:05:54.02\00:05:56.32 Now does God forget His promises? 00:05:56.35\00:05:59.02 When somebody does something right or wrong, 00:05:59.05\00:06:01.06 does the blessing or does the curse 00:06:01.09\00:06:03.83 always come immediately? 00:06:03.86\00:06:06.23 God told David, "You're going to be king," 00:06:06.26\00:06:07.76 but didn't it take a few years before it happened? 00:06:07.76\00:06:10.63 And sometimes, someone will misbehave 00:06:10.67\00:06:12.60 like King Manasseh, 00:06:12.63\00:06:14.00 but later when Nebuchadnezzar came 00:06:14.04\00:06:15.67 and destroyed the city, 00:06:15.70\00:06:16.74 Manasseh had been dead for years. 00:06:16.77\00:06:18.37 He said, "It's because of the blood that Manasseh shed." 00:06:18.41\00:06:21.54 God keeps in the accurate record of things 00:06:21.58\00:06:23.61 and sometimes the judgment comes later. 00:06:23.65\00:06:26.08 Sometimes, He's so patient. 00:06:26.11\00:06:27.45 Three or four generations go by, then the judgment comes. 00:06:27.48\00:06:31.12 Well, now years after Saul was dead but his sons, 00:06:31.15\00:06:34.19 these are the sons of his concubines, 00:06:34.22\00:06:36.76 because Saul not only had his wife 00:06:36.79\00:06:38.96 and he had three sons... 00:06:38.99\00:06:40.43 four sons with his wife. 00:06:40.46\00:06:42.66 But he ended up having other sons 00:06:42.70\00:06:44.83 through the concubines. 00:06:44.87\00:06:46.47 And David said, "What shall we do 00:06:46.50\00:06:49.27 to end the famine because they broke the covenant 00:06:49.30\00:06:51.71 that we made with the Gibeonites?" 00:06:51.74\00:06:53.74 He said that those seven sons must be executed. 00:06:53.78\00:06:58.18 They conspired, they were accomplices, 00:06:58.21\00:06:59.91 encouraging their father to attack the Gibeonites. 00:06:59.95\00:07:02.95 And so finally, David reluctantly does that. 00:07:02.98\00:07:05.89 And then it says that they prayed for the land 00:07:05.92\00:07:08.46 and after the harvest came, which is the other six months, 00:07:08.49\00:07:12.13 the rains came. 00:07:12.16\00:07:13.86 And so if you've ever wondered about that story, 00:07:13.90\00:07:16.70 that's where someone said, "Why would you punish the sons 00:07:16.73\00:07:20.00 for what Saul did?" 00:07:20.04\00:07:21.57 Well, these were adult sons who had encouraged their father 00:07:21.60\00:07:24.54 to attack the Gibeonites. 00:07:24.57\00:07:26.24 Now you read on now, 00:07:26.27\00:07:27.34 you go to the same chapter, verse 15. 00:07:27.38\00:07:30.65 And here, you've got the record of this final war 00:07:30.68\00:07:33.38 with the sons of Goliath. 00:07:33.42\00:07:35.42 David is still mopping up 00:07:35.45\00:07:36.69 the last of his enemies, you know. 00:07:36.72\00:07:38.25 It's really interesting after David killed Goliath, 00:07:38.29\00:07:40.19 for while, he lived in Gath. 00:07:40.22\00:07:41.89 Wouldn't that have been strange? 00:07:41.92\00:07:43.96 And David is carrying the sword of Goliath around 00:07:43.99\00:07:47.76 while he lives in Gath. 00:07:47.76\00:07:50.73 But Goliath had sons, 00:07:50.77\00:07:53.54 they never quite forgot what David had done. 00:07:53.57\00:07:56.27 It says the Philistines were at war. 00:07:56.30\00:07:58.17 I'm in 2 Samuel 21:15 if you wanted to look. 00:07:58.21\00:08:01.34 "The Philistines were at war again with Israel 00:08:01.38\00:08:03.71 and David and the servants went down 00:08:03.75\00:08:05.81 and fought against the Philistines, 00:08:05.85\00:08:08.02 and David grew faint. 00:08:08.05\00:08:11.75 Then Ishbi-Benob 00:08:11.79\00:08:14.99 who was one of the sons of the giant, 00:08:15.02\00:08:17.76 the weight of whose bronze spear was 300 shekels, 00:08:17.79\00:08:22.46 who is bearing the new sword, thought he could kill David." 00:08:22.50\00:08:27.50 And so David's getting old, you know, 00:08:27.54\00:08:29.87 when David was young, you just couldn't stop him. 00:08:29.90\00:08:32.21 I just saw it, I haven't touched this thing 00:08:32.24\00:08:33.81 for a while but I think it's got... 00:08:33.84\00:08:35.74 Yeah. 00:08:35.78\00:08:37.55 Now, you read about the sword of Goliath, 00:08:37.58\00:08:40.45 and the Bible says the sword of Goliath, you know, 00:08:40.48\00:08:42.55 I could never get away with this in a public school, 00:08:42.58\00:08:44.32 they'd be carrying me out right now 00:08:44.35\00:08:46.19 but you could do it in the church. 00:08:46.22\00:08:50.23 Isn't that right? 00:08:50.26\00:08:53.09 But these old swords were heavy. 00:08:53.13\00:08:55.60 And here, David is like 55, 60 years old 00:08:55.63\00:08:58.57 and he starts fighting these guys. 00:08:58.60\00:09:00.17 And he got into a battle with one of the sons of Goliath. 00:09:00.20\00:09:03.34 Now you'll notice, it talks about 00:09:03.37\00:09:04.41 the size of his spear head, 00:09:04.44\00:09:06.17 it's only half the size of Goliath's spear head 00:09:06.21\00:09:08.98 but it's still enormous. 00:09:09.01\00:09:10.55 Average soldier couldn't pick it up. 00:09:10.58\00:09:12.65 So David is trying to fight this guy 00:09:12.68\00:09:14.45 and he's going faint. 00:09:14.48\00:09:16.05 And the soldiers realize, 00:09:16.08\00:09:17.85 he's losing for the first time in his life. 00:09:17.89\00:09:20.26 And so along comes Abishai. 00:09:20.29\00:09:23.22 I like good old Abishai, he was always at David side. 00:09:23.26\00:09:25.99 Remember he is always the one that said, "Let me kill him." 00:09:26.03\00:09:28.96 He wanted to kill Shimei, he wanted to kill Saul, 00:09:29.00\00:09:31.53 but he was the bodyguard of David. 00:09:31.57\00:09:33.30 And Abishai saved his life, killed the giant's son 00:09:33.34\00:09:37.87 and they told David from that point on, they said, 00:09:37.91\00:09:40.91 "You shall," they swore by the Lord, his soldiers said, 00:09:40.94\00:09:43.45 "You will not go out to battle with us any more," 00:09:43.48\00:09:45.85 up until this point, and he's like 55, 60. 00:09:45.88\00:09:48.92 David is going into the battle on the frontlines 00:09:48.95\00:09:52.49 with his soldiers, fighting side by side with them. 00:09:52.52\00:09:57.26 But finally, he's getting weak and they said, 00:09:57.29\00:09:59.16 "Otherwise you will quench the lamp of Israel. 00:09:59.19\00:10:02.60 You are our prophet, you are our king, 00:10:02.63\00:10:05.13 you are our judge, we can't afford to lose you." 00:10:05.17\00:10:09.67 And then you notice that they not only killed this son, 00:10:09.70\00:10:13.17 they kill these other four sons of the giant. 00:10:13.21\00:10:17.05 And from this point on, 00:10:17.08\00:10:18.35 you can check on me, in the Bible, 00:10:18.38\00:10:19.75 you will not find the word giant mentioned again. 00:10:19.78\00:10:23.18 David and his soldiers, 00:10:23.22\00:10:24.55 it talks about David's mighty men, 00:10:24.59\00:10:26.52 and it gives that interesting chronicle of the mighty men. 00:10:26.55\00:10:28.96 By the way, I just talked about Adonijah who killed this giant, 00:10:28.99\00:10:33.50 or Abishai rather who killed the giant. 00:10:33.53\00:10:36.06 He killed 300 at one time. 00:10:36.10\00:10:38.43 You'll find that in Chronicles 00:10:38.47\00:10:40.34 and he was guarding a pass somewhere, 00:10:40.37\00:10:42.27 and as the enemy came, he killed 300 of them 00:10:42.30\00:10:44.37 one at a time. 00:10:44.41\00:10:45.97 And you can read about where Abishai led his soldiers 00:10:46.01\00:10:48.64 and they killed 18,000 Edomites. 00:10:48.68\00:10:51.85 And he was a tremendous, he was almost like Samson. 00:10:51.88\00:10:55.18 And he has these 30 mighty men that had incredible exploits, 00:10:55.22\00:10:58.49 they were all just outstanding soldiers. 00:10:58.52\00:11:01.32 It tells about them, 00:11:01.36\00:11:02.59 "They dispatched the rest of the giants." 00:11:02.62\00:11:04.13 Giants are not mentioned again in the Bible. 00:11:04.16\00:11:06.73 And David and his mighty men represent Jesus 00:11:06.76\00:11:10.43 and His servants, and that's you and me. 00:11:10.47\00:11:12.70 We are to be the servants that fight alongside of Christ. 00:11:12.73\00:11:15.87 Now at this point, when you get to 2 Samuel 22, 00:11:15.90\00:11:20.28 it's all dedicated to a psalm of victory over the enemies. 00:11:20.31\00:11:24.81 And you'll find that's exactly the same as Psalm 18. 00:11:24.85\00:11:28.28 So when you read 2 Samuel 22, 00:11:28.32\00:11:30.79 this song of deliverance and praise, 00:11:30.82\00:11:32.92 it's telling when David wrote Psalm 18, 00:11:32.95\00:11:35.52 you'll find that repeated in your Bible. 00:11:35.56\00:11:38.43 Then a strange story comes along. 00:11:38.46\00:11:40.46 Well, I've got to cover a lot, so I'm moving pretty quick. 00:11:40.50\00:11:44.77 This is often talked about as the other big sin of David. 00:11:44.80\00:11:47.77 We all know about the terrible debacle 00:11:47.80\00:11:50.34 with Bathsheba and Uriah. 00:11:50.37\00:11:53.78 It says, "When he numbered Israel, it's listed as a sin." 00:11:53.81\00:11:58.71 And you read in 1 Chronicles 21, 00:11:58.75\00:12:00.98 it's also in 2 Samuel. 00:12:01.02\00:12:03.02 "And Satan stood up against Israel 00:12:03.05\00:12:06.45 and provoked David to number Israel." 00:12:06.49\00:12:09.16 Now this is interesting that for no other reason, 00:12:09.19\00:12:11.66 because you only find Satan mentioned a handful of times 00:12:11.69\00:12:15.76 in the Old Testament. 00:12:15.80\00:12:17.17 You find the reference in Zechariah, 00:12:17.20\00:12:19.73 you find the reference in Job, 00:12:19.77\00:12:21.87 and you find this reference here in the story of David. 00:12:21.90\00:12:25.24 The word is translated "the adversary" 00:12:25.27\00:12:27.58 and that's what the word Satan means. 00:12:27.61\00:12:30.05 He stood up and he tempted David 00:12:30.08\00:12:32.21 to number Israel. 00:12:32.25\00:12:33.98 And he realized something is going on here that is wrong 00:12:34.02\00:12:38.35 because so what's wrong with taking a census? 00:12:38.39\00:12:41.66 He want to figure out, even our government does a census. 00:12:41.69\00:12:44.43 Moses once did a census to count 00:12:44.46\00:12:46.66 how many soldiers were in the army, 00:12:46.70\00:12:48.76 so why was this such a bad thing? 00:12:48.80\00:12:51.40 Doesn't a good shepherd count his sheep? 00:12:51.43\00:12:54.54 I mean, how else does that shepherd know he had 100 sheep, 00:12:54.57\00:12:57.01 only 99 show up at the fold, 00:12:57.04\00:12:58.71 he's got to go look for one that's missing, 00:12:58.74\00:13:00.28 got to count your sheep. 00:13:00.31\00:13:02.54 But it depends on why you're counting them. 00:13:02.58\00:13:04.75 Now David was doing something that he had never done before. 00:13:04.78\00:13:08.32 Every other time in David's life 00:13:08.35\00:13:09.92 when he went into battle, did David trust 00:13:09.95\00:13:12.45 how big the army was or did he trust the Lord? 00:13:12.49\00:13:15.49 When he went against Goliath, what did he say? 00:13:15.52\00:13:18.33 "You come against me with a sword, a spear, and a shield 00:13:18.36\00:13:20.60 but I come against you with the Lord." 00:13:20.63\00:13:22.70 And Jonathan said, "There's no restraint 00:13:22.73\00:13:24.77 for the Lord to deliver by few or by many." 00:13:24.80\00:13:28.24 And Moses had promised, 00:13:28.27\00:13:30.14 "One of you will chase a thousand." 00:13:30.17\00:13:32.57 And several times in the story of David, 00:13:32.61\00:13:35.18 you can read where David fought back to back with... 00:13:35.21\00:13:38.51 one of his soldiers, I'm trying to remember his name, 00:13:38.55\00:13:40.72 his father... Eliezer, that's it. 00:13:40.75\00:13:42.35 Eliezer, the son of Dodo. 00:13:42.38\00:13:43.89 I always remember Dodo but that wasn't his name, 00:13:43.92\00:13:45.65 that was his father's name. 00:13:45.69\00:13:47.42 He fought with David and they fought off 00:13:47.46\00:13:49.49 the Philistine army, the two of them back to back. 00:13:49.52\00:13:51.43 I mean, so David's always trusted the Lord, 00:13:51.46\00:13:53.56 the numbers didn't matter, but now he wants to know, 00:13:53.60\00:13:56.23 "How big is my army?" 00:13:56.26\00:13:58.13 And it's a question of pride, and he tells Joab, 00:13:58.17\00:14:00.34 "Let's see how big our army is. 00:14:00.37\00:14:02.10 I bet we're bigger than any other army." 00:14:02.14\00:14:05.31 And Joab tells him, "No, David, this is not the right spirit." 00:14:05.34\00:14:08.44 I mean, even Joab counsels him against this. 00:14:08.48\00:14:10.65 Listen to what he says, 00:14:10.68\00:14:11.91 Joab, verse 3, this is 1 Chronicles 21:3. 00:14:11.95\00:14:15.85 He said, "May the Lord add to his people 100 times 00:14:15.88\00:14:19.09 as many as they are, are they not all, my Lord, 00:14:19.12\00:14:22.12 the Kings all of them thy servants? 00:14:22.16\00:14:24.36 Why then should my Lord require this? 00:14:24.39\00:14:26.96 Why should this be a cause of guilt for Israel?" 00:14:27.00\00:14:31.07 Now if David was counting because he was afraid 00:14:31.10\00:14:33.10 some sheep are missing, that'd be different 00:14:33.13\00:14:35.77 but now he's counting for a different reason. 00:14:35.80\00:14:38.31 Good pastors need to count the sheep. 00:14:38.34\00:14:41.51 If someone's missing, you need to know. 00:14:41.54\00:14:44.38 We try to visit. You try to stay on top of it. 00:14:44.41\00:14:46.51 And that's why we need elders and each of you to help. 00:14:46.55\00:14:49.55 But when pastors get together with other pastors 00:14:49.58\00:14:51.72 and they say, "How many church members do you have?" 00:14:51.75\00:14:54.72 Well, this is how many I've got. 00:14:54.76\00:14:57.83 That's not the Spirit of God, that's the spirit of the devil. 00:14:57.86\00:15:01.50 That's pride. 00:15:01.53\00:15:02.93 And this is what was happening with David, 00:15:02.96\00:15:04.63 it's like Jeremiah 17:5, 00:15:04.67\00:15:07.30 "Cursed is the man who trusts in man 00:15:07.34\00:15:09.57 and makes flesh his strength." 00:15:09.60\00:15:11.21 And David wrote, 00:15:11.24\00:15:12.27 "Put not your trust in princes," Psalm 146, 00:15:12.31\00:15:15.31 "or in the son of man in who there is no help, 00:15:15.34\00:15:17.91 his breath goes forth in that very day, 00:15:17.95\00:15:19.91 his thoughts perish." 00:15:19.95\00:15:22.82 But David now was thinking, "How big is my army?" 00:15:22.85\00:15:25.02 So reluctantly, Joab goes out, begins to number Israel. 00:15:25.05\00:15:30.03 And he doesn't even do some of the fringes 00:15:30.06\00:15:32.36 because the whole thing was kind of disgusting to Joab 00:15:32.39\00:15:35.26 that they were doing it, 00:15:35.30\00:15:36.43 because it wasn't for the right reasons, 00:15:36.46\00:15:38.60 the nation had been prospering. 00:15:38.63\00:15:41.40 But the Bible does give the number. 00:15:41.44\00:15:44.51 David's army was 1,570,000. 00:15:44.54\00:15:49.91 Now, if you don't think that's big, 00:15:49.94\00:15:52.11 there are 300 million people in the United States 00:15:52.15\00:15:54.55 and we have a standing army right now in the US 00:15:54.58\00:15:56.95 of 1,429,000. 00:15:56.99\00:16:00.86 David's army was bigger 00:16:00.89\00:16:02.42 than the United States' standing army. 00:16:02.46\00:16:04.99 I was not counting our reserves 00:16:05.03\00:16:06.33 but talking about the standing army. 00:16:06.36\00:16:08.63 So that's a lot of soldiers. 00:16:08.66\00:16:10.87 The Lord had really blessed him. 00:16:10.90\00:16:12.23 But after David did it, 00:16:12.27\00:16:14.04 he was convicted by the Holy Spirit. 00:16:14.07\00:16:15.50 He thought, "Man, why, what came, I was so proud? 00:16:15.54\00:16:17.44 What came over me?" 00:16:17.47\00:16:18.57 And a curse, and the people became proud. 00:16:18.61\00:16:20.98 A plague was going to go through the land of Israel. 00:16:21.01\00:16:23.65 And matter of fact, David was given a rough task. 00:16:23.68\00:16:26.48 Prophet came to him, he says, 00:16:26.51\00:16:27.55 "I'm going to give you three choices." 00:16:27.58\00:16:30.55 And he said, "Do you want to be pursued by your enemy, 00:16:30.59\00:16:34.76 "And I forget them, all three choice, but one was," 00:16:34.79\00:16:37.23 or do you want pestilence to come through the land. 00:16:37.26\00:16:39.19 And David said, "I don't want to fall into the hand of man. 00:16:39.23\00:16:44.27 But God is merciful, let me fall into your hands." 00:16:44.30\00:16:46.53 So God sent three days of terrible pestilence, 00:16:46.57\00:16:49.04 went through the land, and 70,000 people died 00:16:49.07\00:16:54.31 through this plague that went through the land. 00:16:54.34\00:16:56.54 Now that's not uncommon. 00:16:56.58\00:16:57.78 Sometimes they used to have a bubonic plague 00:16:57.81\00:16:59.35 or different plagues that would sweep very... 00:16:59.38\00:17:00.92 It was a pandemic of some sort that went through the land, 00:17:00.95\00:17:04.42 and 70,000 people died. 00:17:04.45\00:17:06.92 He still had an army of 1.5 million people 00:17:06.96\00:17:11.43 if it was only soldiers that died, I'm sure it wasn't. 00:17:11.46\00:17:14.73 And so as this angel of destruction, 00:17:14.73\00:17:18.77 you ever heard these stories and fables 00:17:18.80\00:17:20.57 about the death angel or the angel of death? 00:17:20.60\00:17:23.57 Comes from a couple of stories in the Bible, 00:17:23.61\00:17:26.51 Passover, angel of death went through Egypt. 00:17:26.54\00:17:29.38 In the days of Hezekiah, 00:17:29.41\00:17:30.75 the Assyrians were about to attack Jerusalem, 00:17:30.78\00:17:32.61 he prayed and the angel of death 00:17:32.65\00:17:34.92 went through the Syrian camp and killed 185,000 in one day. 00:17:34.95\00:17:39.99 And now this angel of death is coming through the land, 00:17:40.02\00:17:43.12 David actually sees the angel, he sees the angel 00:17:43.16\00:17:47.20 after he's gone through northern Israel. 00:17:47.23\00:17:48.66 And there's been this terrible plague 00:17:48.70\00:17:50.00 and he's gotten word of all these people 00:17:50.03\00:17:51.30 that are dying over this short period. 00:17:51.33\00:17:53.77 He sees this angel with a sword drawn 00:17:53.80\00:17:55.67 in his hand over Jerusalem, 00:17:55.70\00:17:57.87 and David prays and said, "Lord! 00:17:57.91\00:17:59.67 Lord! Please spare your people. 00:17:59.71\00:18:01.28 It was me, why are they suffering for my sin?" 00:18:01.31\00:18:04.65 Well, the answer to that question is 00:18:04.68\00:18:07.22 the people of Israel have now twice rebelled against David. 00:18:07.25\00:18:10.55 Once under Sheba and once under Absalom, 00:18:10.59\00:18:16.09 and so there's a plague that's also coming on them. 00:18:16.12\00:18:19.13 But David is pleading, 00:18:19.16\00:18:20.53 he is interceding as Jesus is our King, and our judge, 00:18:20.56\00:18:23.33 and our intercessor, he says, "Take it out on me." 00:18:23.37\00:18:26.10 This is what David says. 00:18:26.13\00:18:27.44 He said, "It's my sin, take it out on me. 00:18:27.47\00:18:29.50 What have these sheep done?" 00:18:29.54\00:18:30.74 He's still thinking like a shepherd. 00:18:30.77\00:18:33.64 And God says, "All right, you need to make an offering." 00:18:33.68\00:18:38.31 He says, "Go to the threshing floor 00:18:38.35\00:18:40.12 of Ornan, the Jebusite. 00:18:40.15\00:18:42.52 Now, the Jebusite, still even though 00:18:42.55\00:18:44.02 David conquered Jerusalem, 00:18:44.05\00:18:45.22 some of them still lived in Jerusalem. 00:18:45.25\00:18:47.49 One of them was a very noble gentleman, 00:18:47.52\00:18:50.86 he is threshing wheat on this big flat area. 00:18:50.89\00:18:54.56 David can see this angel with the sword drawn. 00:18:54.56\00:18:57.07 And amazing thing, it says, "Ornan looked up 00:18:57.10\00:18:59.03 and saw the angel with the sword drawn 00:18:59.07\00:19:01.04 and he kept threshing wheat, his sons went and hid." 00:19:01.07\00:19:05.31 Here's a man who is not afraid of very much. 00:19:05.34\00:19:08.51 He figured, "Well, God wants to take me, 00:19:08.54\00:19:10.35 He'll take me but I've got to finish with this wheat, 00:19:10.38\00:19:12.28 if I'm going to live, I'm going to live." 00:19:12.31\00:19:15.65 And so he was working. 00:19:15.68\00:19:17.25 And David goes up to him and he says, 00:19:17.29\00:19:19.39 "The Lord's told me, I need to make an offering to Him, 00:19:19.42\00:19:21.29 and He wants me to do it here. 00:19:21.32\00:19:23.86 Sell me your threshing floor. 00:19:23.89\00:19:25.63 A threshing floor is a big flat area 00:19:25.66\00:19:27.40 where they used to take the wheat, it was up on a hill 00:19:27.40\00:19:30.00 and they'd shovel the wheat after they beat it, 00:19:30.03\00:19:32.13 the chaff would blow away, the good wheat would fall down, 00:19:32.17\00:19:34.74 you needed a big flat area with a smooth paved surface. 00:19:34.77\00:19:40.48 And there was this big corner area of Jerusalem 00:19:40.51\00:19:44.38 and he owned this, he was a very wealthy man. 00:19:44.41\00:19:47.08 David said, "Let me buy it. 00:19:47.12\00:19:48.18 I need to offer to the Lord here," 00:19:48.22\00:19:49.48 because this is the spot where Abraham offered Isaac, 00:19:49.52\00:19:54.32 it's the same mountain. 00:19:54.36\00:19:56.32 And this is the place where Melchizedek brought out 00:19:56.36\00:20:00.50 bread and wine to Abraham. 00:20:00.53\00:20:04.53 Melchizedek, a type of Christ, 00:20:04.57\00:20:07.10 Abraham offering his son, a type of Christ, 00:20:07.14\00:20:10.74 and now David interceding for the people, 00:20:10.77\00:20:13.21 same place, type of Christ. 00:20:13.24\00:20:16.64 And Ornan says, "I'll give it to the King. 00:20:16.68\00:20:18.91 Not only will I give it, I will give the instruments, 00:20:18.95\00:20:22.15 I will give the oxen for sacrifice." 00:20:22.18\00:20:25.05 And it says that Ornan dealt like a king with David. 00:20:25.09\00:20:27.56 And David said, "No." 00:20:27.59\00:20:28.86 And this is a statement 00:20:28.89\00:20:29.92 you don't want to quickly forget. 00:20:29.96\00:20:31.53 David said, "I will not give an offering 00:20:31.56\00:20:34.10 to the Lord of something that doesn't cost me anything." 00:20:34.13\00:20:38.70 Is that a sacrifice? 00:20:38.73\00:20:40.80 If I pick your pocket 00:20:40.84\00:20:41.94 and put it in the offering plate, 00:20:41.97\00:20:44.41 is that a sacrifice? 00:20:44.44\00:20:45.71 That's how the government does things 00:20:45.74\00:20:47.74 because really the government is very generous 00:20:47.78\00:20:50.28 with your money. 00:20:50.31\00:20:52.11 And I kind of resent, 00:20:52.15\00:20:53.38 I don't want to get too political 00:20:53.42\00:20:54.45 but I do kind of resent 00:20:54.48\00:20:55.92 that because the government has now taken it 00:20:55.95\00:20:58.32 upon themselves to care for the poor and everything, 00:20:58.35\00:21:00.86 it's like they believe that it's the right thing to do, 00:21:00.89\00:21:04.56 but the people cannot be good enough, 00:21:04.59\00:21:06.59 they're not trusted to be good enough to do it. 00:21:06.63\00:21:08.93 And so what the churches in America used to do, 00:21:08.96\00:21:11.97 the government says, "We will take the money 00:21:12.00\00:21:14.20 and we will do it." 00:21:14.24\00:21:15.64 And what it's done, it's taken it away, 00:21:15.67\00:21:17.81 the love and the giving has been taken away 00:21:17.84\00:21:19.47 from the people and it's become politicized. 00:21:19.51\00:21:24.35 When King Saul got into trouble, 00:21:24.38\00:21:26.82 you know what happened? 00:21:26.85\00:21:27.92 He conquered the Amalekites, he took the Amalekites, 00:21:27.95\00:21:32.95 and he offered it to the Lord, 00:21:32.99\00:21:34.72 and he was supposed to destroy it. 00:21:34.76\00:21:36.29 It's really easy for me to steal from you 00:21:36.32\00:21:38.86 and make an offering. 00:21:38.89\00:21:40.40 Is that really a sacrifice? 00:21:40.43\00:21:44.00 And so David said, "I'm not going to give 00:21:44.03\00:21:46.40 something to the Lord that which doesn't cost me." 00:21:46.43\00:21:50.61 If it doesn't cost you, it's not really a sacrifice, 00:21:50.64\00:21:53.04 is it? 00:21:53.07\00:21:54.61 And he insisted, he said, "I will buy it." 00:21:54.64\00:21:57.45 And so he sold it to the King. 00:21:57.48\00:21:58.91 I think, probably at a good price. 00:21:58.95\00:22:01.12 And the king then made an offering there. 00:22:01.15\00:22:03.25 And as a result of his offering, 00:22:03.28\00:22:06.35 the angel of judgment, the plague was stopped. 00:22:06.39\00:22:10.76 And you can read in 1 Chronicles 21:26, 00:22:10.79\00:22:13.63 "And David build an altar to the Lord 00:22:13.66\00:22:15.90 and he offered burnt offerings and peace offerings 00:22:15.93\00:22:18.03 and called on the Lord. 00:22:18.07\00:22:19.50 And He answered him from heaven by fire on the altar 00:22:19.53\00:22:24.04 of burnt offering." 00:22:24.07\00:22:25.34 Now some of you were at our dedication, 00:22:25.37\00:22:27.18 I quoted this verse because 00:22:27.21\00:22:28.51 it's a very significant passage. 00:22:28.54\00:22:31.45 Most of the time when people made an offering, 00:22:31.48\00:22:33.62 the priest would build a fire. 00:22:33.65\00:22:36.25 A few times in the Bible, 00:22:36.28\00:22:37.72 they put the sacrifice on the altar 00:22:37.75\00:22:40.72 and in a miraculous singular way, 00:22:40.76\00:22:43.32 fire came from heaven. 00:22:43.36\00:22:45.56 When Elijah prayed on Mount Carmel, 00:22:45.59\00:22:48.36 fire came down from God. 00:22:48.40\00:22:50.57 When Moses dedicated 00:22:50.60\00:22:52.00 the old tabernacle in the wilderness, 00:22:52.03\00:22:54.14 fire came down from God out of heaven. 00:22:54.17\00:22:56.64 When Solomon later dedicates 00:22:56.67\00:22:58.47 the temple build on this location, 00:22:58.51\00:23:00.58 fire comes down from God out of heaven. 00:23:00.61\00:23:02.81 So this was a great and a powerful demonstration 00:23:02.84\00:23:06.08 of God's approval. 00:23:06.11\00:23:07.65 When Abel offered the sacrifice, 00:23:07.68\00:23:10.32 fire came down, nothing came for Cain. 00:23:10.35\00:23:13.29 And so this was a sign that God had approved and accepted, 00:23:13.32\00:23:16.99 the plague was stopped but furthermore, 00:23:17.03\00:23:19.63 this was the place now that God was saying, 00:23:19.66\00:23:22.63 He wanted the people to bring their offerings. 00:23:22.66\00:23:24.70 Up to this point, they had all been waiting. 00:23:24.73\00:23:27.47 When they enter the promised land, God said, 00:23:27.50\00:23:29.64 "I will tell you where but I am going to choose a place 00:23:29.67\00:23:33.91 where I want it to be the ultimate city of refuge." 00:23:33.94\00:23:38.91 Now around the land of Israel, 00:23:38.95\00:23:40.05 they have these places strategically, 00:23:40.08\00:23:41.88 there are roads that were different cities. 00:23:41.92\00:23:45.05 Where if a person got in trouble 00:23:45.09\00:23:47.22 and they wanted to get a judgment, 00:23:47.26\00:23:49.16 if they killed someone accidentally 00:23:49.19\00:23:50.93 rather than have the avenger of blood kill them, 00:23:50.96\00:23:54.20 they could flee to a city of refuge 00:23:54.23\00:23:56.10 and they'd be safe there. 00:23:56.13\00:23:57.47 And there were six cities of refuge 00:23:57.50\00:23:59.50 around the land of Israel. 00:23:59.53\00:24:01.57 But there was none near Jerusalem. 00:24:01.60\00:24:03.24 Jerusalem ended up becoming a city of refuge. 00:24:03.27\00:24:06.54 If you want more about that, I can give you some examples 00:24:06.57\00:24:09.44 where it was used that way, but it also became the place 00:24:09.48\00:24:12.05 where they would later come to celebrate their feasts. 00:24:12.08\00:24:15.32 It became the holy city really at this point. 00:24:15.35\00:24:17.79 So when David prayed and fire came down in Jerusalem, 00:24:17.82\00:24:21.09 this was the real christening event of that city 00:24:21.12\00:24:25.39 being chosen by God. 00:24:25.43\00:24:27.96 Because up to that point, you realize the tabernacle 00:24:27.96\00:24:30.63 wasn't always in Jerusalem, it was at Shiloh, 00:24:30.67\00:24:33.34 and it was in the House of Obed-Edom, 00:24:33.37\00:24:34.94 and the tent of Moses was still moving around. 00:24:34.97\00:24:38.01 This is where God said, "This is the place 00:24:38.04\00:24:39.81 that I've chosen." 00:24:39.84\00:24:41.34 And, but you remember David said, 00:24:41.38\00:24:44.28 "Lord, I want to build You a temple." 00:24:44.31\00:24:45.58 And David said, "You can't build the temple for me 00:24:45.61\00:24:48.05 because you've been a bloody man, 00:24:48.08\00:24:49.22 not only a man of war and you shed a lot of blood 00:24:49.25\00:24:51.82 but you also are guilty of innocent blood. 00:24:51.85\00:24:55.09 And what happened with Uriah, 00:24:55.12\00:24:57.09 I can't have you build my temple, 00:24:57.13\00:24:59.23 but this is where I want it built." 00:24:59.26\00:25:01.60 And so that was the place from then on 00:25:01.63\00:25:03.43 where they sacrificed. 00:25:03.47\00:25:05.50 And you can read here where at this point, 00:25:05.53\00:25:11.94 it tells us David is aging. 00:25:11.97\00:25:13.78 And you go to 1 Kings 1, 00:25:13.81\00:25:17.41 you've gotten to the end of Chronicle. 00:25:17.45\00:25:20.15 By the way, 00:25:20.18\00:25:22.15 so who pays for the threshing floor of Ornan? 00:25:22.18\00:25:25.99 David does. 00:25:26.02\00:25:27.99 Who pays for the temple of the Lord? 00:25:28.02\00:25:32.73 Jesus pays for you being a temple. 00:25:32.76\00:25:36.63 So you got a couple of temples here. 00:25:36.67\00:25:37.97 Remember, Jesus one time said in the Gospel of John, 00:25:38.00\00:25:40.80 "Destroy this temple made with hands 00:25:40.84\00:25:42.67 and in three days, I will make one without hands?" 00:25:42.70\00:25:45.37 But he spoke of his body. 00:25:45.41\00:25:48.01 And who is the cornerstone in the spiritual body? 00:25:48.04\00:25:52.48 No other foundation can any man lay 00:25:52.51\00:25:54.82 except that which is laid which is Jesus Christ. 00:25:54.85\00:25:57.55 Jesus is the cornerstone. 00:25:57.59\00:25:59.62 Jesus laid down his life, 00:25:59.65\00:26:01.56 He paid the cost to build the house of the Lord, 00:26:01.59\00:26:05.09 for the foundation and the whole building. 00:26:05.13\00:26:07.00 So David, a type of Christ, he pays for the foundation 00:26:07.03\00:26:11.20 for where the temple is going to be, 00:26:11.23\00:26:12.87 and you'll see later, he pays for the whole thing. 00:26:12.90\00:26:15.30 So David again is a type of Christ. 00:26:15.34\00:26:18.27 Now 1 Kings, I told you, Chapter 1 00:26:18.31\00:26:21.04 begins by telling us David is getting old. 00:26:21.08\00:26:25.71 Now King David was old and advanced in years, 00:26:25.75\00:26:29.22 and although they covered him with clothes, 00:26:29.25\00:26:31.29 he could not get warm. 00:26:31.32\00:26:33.46 Now sometimes, you get a fever temporarily, 00:26:33.49\00:26:35.96 and you go shaking, they put covers on you, 00:26:35.99\00:26:37.73 you'll sweat it out and you're okay. 00:26:37.76\00:26:39.66 But this was something different, 00:26:39.69\00:26:41.13 David just couldn't get warm. 00:26:41.16\00:26:43.70 I called Dr. De Rose the other day and I said, 00:26:43.73\00:26:46.23 "You know, I got a couple of theories 00:26:46.27\00:26:47.30 but you're doctor. 00:26:47.34\00:26:48.70 And Sonny was in the car, they're both medical people. 00:26:48.74\00:26:50.61 I said, "What could possibly have caused this?" 00:26:50.64\00:26:54.21 Well, one thing could have been hypothyroidism 00:26:54.24\00:26:58.11 and can leave you cold all the time, 00:26:58.15\00:27:00.18 as you get older and you lose muscle mass. 00:27:00.22\00:27:01.95 So you sometimes could get a little colder, 00:27:01.98\00:27:03.89 if you got low blood pressure. 00:27:03.92\00:27:05.95 I'm cold all the time. 00:27:05.99\00:27:07.32 I've got very low blood pressure actually. 00:27:07.36\00:27:09.36 And the doctor I go in, last night I was in, 00:27:09.39\00:27:11.89 he said, "Are you a vegan?" 00:27:11.93\00:27:13.46 Doctor actually asked me that. 00:27:13.50\00:27:14.93 I said, "Why do you ask this? 00:27:14.96\00:27:16.10 Your blood pressure is really low which is a good thing. 00:27:16.13\00:27:18.93 I'm cold but I'm healthy. 00:27:18.97\00:27:20.84 So, don't worry. 00:27:20.87\00:27:24.57 I'm not going to ask for an Abhishag, you know what, 00:27:24.61\00:27:27.54 I haven't gotten into that yet. 00:27:27.58\00:27:29.71 They couldn't get him warm. 00:27:29.74\00:27:32.81 I thought that Dr. De Ros was going to say the reason 00:27:32.85\00:27:35.02 David was cold is because it became 00:27:35.05\00:27:36.95 a government health care and that's why. 00:27:36.99\00:27:41.26 "He was old and advanced in years 00:27:41.29\00:27:42.89 and although they covered him with clothes, 00:27:42.92\00:27:44.66 he could not get warm 00:27:44.69\00:27:46.09 and so they sought for a beautiful young woman." 00:27:46.13\00:27:49.66 Now in our home, in the winter time, 00:27:49.70\00:27:51.93 Karen and I have an electric blanket. 00:27:51.97\00:27:53.23 I think it's still plugged in, 00:27:53.27\00:27:54.84 we're not using it now because it's warmed up. 00:27:54.87\00:27:56.30 We got an electric blanket, it's kind of nice, you know, 00:27:56.34\00:27:58.64 when the house is cold, you call in to warm. 00:27:58.67\00:28:01.34 Don't look at me like that, how many of you 00:28:01.38\00:28:02.61 have electric blankets? 00:28:02.64\00:28:04.21 Okay, I know. I'm not the only one. 00:28:04.25\00:28:06.58 Yes, even in Sacramento, we do have a few cold days. 00:28:06.61\00:28:10.52 And so, but back then, 00:28:10.55\00:28:13.19 they didn't have electricity, you all knew that. 00:28:13.22\00:28:16.52 And he was cold and so, you know, 00:28:16.56\00:28:19.23 the Bible says two lying together 00:28:19.26\00:28:22.86 are better than one because you can stay warm. 00:28:22.90\00:28:25.20 You know, it says that in Proverbs. 00:28:25.23\00:28:27.74 And so they said, "Well, let there be a search 00:28:27.77\00:28:30.44 and let's find a beautiful young woman," 00:28:30.47\00:28:32.74 because you know, they're young, 00:28:32.77\00:28:34.34 you got great circulation. 00:28:34.38\00:28:37.18 "Through all the territory of Israel, 00:28:37.21\00:28:39.31 and they found Abhishag, the Shunammite. 00:28:39.35\00:28:42.58 Now, some of you remember, 00:28:42.62\00:28:43.95 Elisha stayed with a great woman of Shunammite, 00:28:43.99\00:28:46.52 it's up in the north. 00:28:46.55\00:28:48.19 And they were a people, 00:28:48.22\00:28:49.32 they were not regular Israelites, 00:28:49.36\00:28:50.59 but they had adopted the God of Israel 00:28:50.63\00:28:52.33 and they were very bright and very beautiful people. 00:28:52.36\00:28:55.43 If you later read in the Bible, 00:28:55.46\00:28:57.97 Solomon in the Song of Solomon, 00:28:58.00\00:28:59.47 he talks about the Shunammite. 00:28:59.50\00:29:02.97 And there's some who theorize 00:29:03.00\00:29:05.17 that Abishag was a very young woman, 00:29:05.21\00:29:07.71 she never knew David. 00:29:07.74\00:29:09.38 Her job was basically to get into bed with him, 00:29:09.41\00:29:13.35 to cuddle him and try to get him to stop shaking 00:29:13.38\00:29:16.12 because he was cold all the time. 00:29:16.15\00:29:18.12 And she took care of him, you know, 00:29:18.15\00:29:20.22 and she really became an attendant to David 00:29:20.26\00:29:23.96 but, you know, was very personal 00:29:23.99\00:29:25.56 and that she would hug him and try and get him warm. 00:29:25.59\00:29:29.76 And they brought her to the king, 00:29:29.80\00:29:31.30 the young woman was very beautiful 00:29:31.33\00:29:33.70 and she was of service to the king 00:29:33.74\00:29:35.44 and attended to him, 00:29:35.47\00:29:36.71 but the king knew her not, she was a virgin. 00:29:36.74\00:29:39.44 Now he might be interested to know that the word Abishag 00:29:39.47\00:29:44.45 in Hebrew means pretty little hot water bottle, 00:29:44.48\00:29:47.38 isn't that amazing? 00:29:47.42\00:29:49.25 I bet you would never have known that. 00:29:49.28\00:29:52.39 You don't believe me. 00:29:52.42\00:29:54.22 No, but, you know, I do think there's a very... 00:29:54.26\00:29:57.13 There's a very interesting spiritual point here. 00:29:57.16\00:29:59.63 Here you've got... 00:29:59.66\00:30:00.66 Who does David represent in our analogies? 00:30:00.70\00:30:02.63 Jesus. 00:30:02.66\00:30:04.07 And he has a virgin that becomes his bride, 00:30:04.10\00:30:07.87 that remains a virgin. 00:30:07.90\00:30:10.24 And you sort of see those parallels through history. 00:30:10.27\00:30:13.48 So that's interesting in itself. 00:30:13.51\00:30:16.78 Now, you know, I was reading the book, 00:30:16.81\00:30:19.01 Patriarchs and Prophets. 00:30:19.05\00:30:21.38 What's happening with David, 00:30:21.42\00:30:22.48 because he's not 70 years old yet, 00:30:22.52\00:30:24.89 and here's this giant killer and he goes faint in battle, 00:30:24.92\00:30:28.49 he can't get warm. 00:30:28.52\00:30:30.73 And you read there, it says, "Many cares and wars 00:30:30.76\00:30:33.70 had sap the fountain of life." 00:30:33.73\00:30:36.87 Another commentator wrote, 00:30:36.90\00:30:38.67 "But David's strength was impaired 00:30:38.70\00:30:40.67 and his natural force abated by his many wars fatigues 00:30:40.70\00:30:44.51 by night and day in campaigns and the many sorrows 00:30:44.54\00:30:48.31 and afflictions he met from his family and his friends, 00:30:48.34\00:30:51.68 as well as his enemies that exhausted him 00:30:51.71\00:30:54.18 aging him prematurely." 00:30:54.22\00:30:56.72 So David, look at what he went through. 00:30:56.75\00:30:58.15 He spent years running for his life, 00:30:58.19\00:31:00.42 he was the, you know, he was living in caves, 00:31:00.46\00:31:04.36 he was, you know, had problems at home. 00:31:04.39\00:31:08.13 He fought constant battles with all the enemies, 00:31:08.16\00:31:11.20 he was victorious but it drains you after a while. 00:31:11.23\00:31:14.17 And the constant stresses, having his children rebel, 00:31:14.20\00:31:17.81 he had another child that died and all these things, 00:31:17.84\00:31:21.61 it had just worn him out. 00:31:21.64\00:31:23.81 And that's supported by the commentators 00:31:23.85\00:31:26.25 led by the Spirit of Prophecy 00:31:26.28\00:31:27.58 and so it kind of prematurely aged him. 00:31:27.62\00:31:30.15 David is the one who wrote that typically 00:31:30.19\00:31:32.49 our days are three score in ten, 00:31:32.52\00:31:34.89 and yet if by strength we happen to live four score, 00:31:34.92\00:31:38.66 sometimes there's aches and pains, 00:31:38.69\00:31:41.16 so I'm paraphrasing that. 00:31:41.20\00:31:44.50 Now as David is weak and he's in bed 00:31:44.53\00:31:47.70 and he can barely get up and get around, 00:31:47.74\00:31:50.87 one of his sons, Adonijah, the younger brother of Absalom, 00:31:50.91\00:31:54.08 he thinks that this is the moment. 00:31:54.11\00:31:56.51 Since no one's been chosen as King, 00:31:56.54\00:31:58.35 rumor is that Solomon is David's favor, 00:31:58.38\00:32:02.62 Nathan the prophet is training Solomon to be king, 00:32:02.65\00:32:05.65 he was sort of the tutor. 00:32:05.69\00:32:07.29 And Adonijah, this other handsome son of David, 00:32:07.32\00:32:11.66 the younger brother of Absalom, 00:32:11.69\00:32:15.46 probably also very handsome, 00:32:15.50\00:32:17.57 he's next in line to reign as far as age 00:32:17.60\00:32:20.54 and he thinks to take it upon himself. 00:32:20.57\00:32:21.97 He said, "Look, David is kind of getting old, 00:32:22.00\00:32:23.54 I have to take care of this myself." 00:32:23.57\00:32:25.24 So he gets together with Joab, and he said, 00:32:25.27\00:32:27.18 "You want that young bookworm Solomon, he's a poet, 00:32:27.21\00:32:29.74 he's righting proverbs, you want him to be king?" 00:32:29.78\00:32:32.65 He said, "These other kids, they're not prepared, 00:32:32.68\00:32:35.82 I'm the one that should be king." 00:32:35.85\00:32:36.89 And then he goes to Abiathar, the priest, he says, 00:32:36.92\00:32:38.79 "I should be the king," and he talks them into it. 00:32:38.82\00:32:42.32 He said, "David's getting old, you know, look at him, 00:32:42.36\00:32:45.03 he's shaking all the time." 00:32:45.06\00:32:47.66 And somehow Adonijah through his cunning 00:32:47.66\00:32:50.90 and through his persuasion he gets Joab 00:32:50.93\00:32:53.84 and he gets Abiathar, the priest to support him. 00:32:53.87\00:32:58.81 He prepares 50 horses to run before him, 00:32:58.84\00:33:01.38 does that sound familiar? 00:33:01.41\00:33:02.94 It's exactly what Absalom did. 00:33:02.98\00:33:05.18 He's starting to make himself 00:33:05.21\00:33:06.51 out to be the next in line, to be the king. 00:33:06.55\00:33:09.02 He's got this entourage running around, 00:33:09.05\00:33:10.69 finally he picks a day and he says, 00:33:10.72\00:33:13.19 I'm going to send out invitations, invite everybody, 00:33:13.22\00:33:15.39 I'm gonna sort of have my own coronation. 00:33:15.42\00:33:17.33 Invites all these people of the kingdom 00:33:17.36\00:33:18.89 and they're all starting to sing, 00:33:18.93\00:33:20.90 "Long live, King Adonijah." 00:33:20.93\00:33:22.90 Now David is still alive, he's in Jerusalem. 00:33:22.93\00:33:25.93 This is on the outskirts of town, 00:33:25.97\00:33:27.60 they go to I think it's Gihon. 00:33:27.64\00:33:29.74 And they're all celebrating Adonijah. 00:33:29.77\00:33:33.31 And pretty soon the word reaches Bathsheba. 00:33:33.34\00:33:36.54 Everyone's invited, 00:33:36.58\00:33:37.95 all the king's sons were invited except Solomon, 00:33:37.98\00:33:40.42 that's not a good sign. 00:33:40.45\00:33:44.42 And... 00:33:44.45\00:33:46.52 Nathan, the prophet is not invited 00:33:50.06\00:33:51.56 because he's been training Solomon to be king, 00:33:51.59\00:33:53.43 Bathsheba is not invited. 00:33:53.46\00:33:56.40 Abiathar, Zadok, the priest is not invited, 00:33:56.43\00:33:59.43 there were kind of two priests back then. 00:33:59.47\00:34:01.37 And they go into David, Bathsheba goes into David 00:34:01.40\00:34:04.07 and she said, "My Lord, the king, 00:34:04.11\00:34:06.57 did you say that Adonijah should reign? 00:34:06.61\00:34:09.24 Didn't you say my son Solomon should reign?" 00:34:09.28\00:34:11.38 David said, "Absolutely." 00:34:11.41\00:34:13.45 And she said, "But Adonijah just had a party 00:34:13.48\00:34:15.15 and they're all saying, "Long live King Adonijah." 00:34:15.18\00:34:17.82 And when you die if you don't settle this," 00:34:17.85\00:34:19.95 she says, "We're done for. 00:34:19.99\00:34:22.46 We've not been invited, that's not a good sign." 00:34:22.49\00:34:25.89 And then Nathan, the prophet comes in, 00:34:25.93\00:34:27.66 he says the same thing to the king. 00:34:27.66\00:34:29.76 And David, all of a sudden he sits himself up in bed, 00:34:29.80\00:34:33.10 and you remember when Absalom tried to be king, 00:34:33.13\00:34:34.80 he ran for it. 00:34:34.84\00:34:36.07 David now knows that God has said 00:34:36.10\00:34:38.14 Solomon should be king, he doesn't have to run for it. 00:34:38.17\00:34:41.08 He becomes very lucid and he said, 00:34:41.11\00:34:43.68 "Here's what you need to do," he says, "I'm swearing to you 00:34:43.71\00:34:46.41 that your son is gonna be king. 00:34:46.45\00:34:47.82 God has told me so I know it's going to happen." 00:34:47.85\00:34:49.58 Just like God promised Abraham and Abraham believed 00:34:49.62\00:34:53.29 and it gave him confidence, 00:34:53.32\00:34:54.96 David knows he doesn't have to worry about this. 00:34:54.99\00:34:57.69 He says, "I'm gonna do it right now, I'm still king. 00:34:57.73\00:35:00.63 I'm still alive," 00:35:00.66\00:35:02.16 he said, "I want you to put Solomon on my mule," 00:35:02.20\00:35:05.40 and it was a very unique white beautifully decorated mule, 00:35:05.43\00:35:09.04 everyone knew David's mule. 00:35:09.07\00:35:12.21 "I want you to go down to Gihon, blow the trumpets, 00:35:12.24\00:35:17.18 get Benaiah," the leader of the army. 00:35:17.21\00:35:19.31 He had sort of taken over for Joab. 00:35:19.35\00:35:22.05 "I want you to get Zadok, the priest, 00:35:22.08\00:35:23.52 I want you to pour the anointing oil. 00:35:23.55\00:35:25.85 No one's anointed Adonijah, I want you to anoint Solomon. 00:35:25.89\00:35:30.56 Put the law in his hand and then announce that 00:35:30.59\00:35:32.79 he's king and there everyone's gonna see that I'll sit up 00:35:32.83\00:35:35.43 and all raise my hands and I'll praise God 00:35:35.46\00:35:36.97 and I will endorse Solomon." 00:35:37.00\00:35:39.70 So they do that 00:35:39.73\00:35:40.94 and pretty soon word spreads through Jerusalem 00:35:40.97\00:35:43.37 that Solomon has been chosen by David 00:35:43.41\00:35:45.51 and everybody is singing and the priest is there 00:35:45.54\00:35:47.28 and they put the oil on his head and that was, 00:35:47.31\00:35:49.88 that was the important thing. 00:35:49.91\00:35:51.98 And it says the city was rant 00:35:52.01\00:35:53.62 with the sound of everybody celebrating. 00:35:53.65\00:35:55.98 Well, the party pavilion where Adonijah is celebrating, 00:35:56.02\00:36:00.09 they said, "We hear noise, what's the noise?" 00:36:00.12\00:36:02.29 And the messenger comes in and Adonijah just says, 00:36:02.32\00:36:04.26 "Oh, you brought good news, is it?" 00:36:04.29\00:36:05.79 "No, I haven't." 00:36:05.83\00:36:07.76 And the city's in an uproar 00:36:07.83\00:36:09.00 because David has chosen Solomon to be a king 00:36:09.03\00:36:11.77 and everybody is celebrating and saying, 00:36:11.80\00:36:13.50 "Long live, King Solomon. 00:36:13.54\00:36:15.77 And may the reign of Solomon be even greater 00:36:15.80\00:36:18.04 than the reign of David." 00:36:18.07\00:36:19.47 And everybody who had come to Adonijah's party, 00:36:19.51\00:36:23.91 you just say the party was over. 00:36:23.95\00:36:26.31 They realize they are going to be seen as rebels 00:36:26.35\00:36:29.25 by this new king and they all very quietly left. 00:36:29.28\00:36:34.52 Adonijah then, he goes to the temple 00:36:34.56\00:36:37.59 where the tent was, 00:36:37.63\00:36:39.66 he gets a hold of the horns of the altar 00:36:39.69\00:36:41.20 and he stay in there and they said, 00:36:41.23\00:36:42.73 "Adonijah, your brother go to Solomon's," 00:36:42.76\00:36:44.43 and Adonijah, your brother's 00:36:44.47\00:36:46.20 clinging to the horns of the altar 00:36:46.23\00:36:48.40 and he said, "Please, don't slay me." 00:36:48.44\00:36:50.94 And Solomon said... 00:36:50.97\00:36:52.17 He proves himself to be a worthy man, 00:36:52.21\00:36:53.78 "Not a hair of his head will fall to the ground." 00:36:53.81\00:36:55.41 He probably had thick hair like Absalom, 00:36:55.44\00:36:56.98 that's why he said that. 00:36:57.01\00:36:59.71 And Solomon dealt with Adonijah later 00:36:59.75\00:37:04.25 because he's conspired one more time 00:37:04.29\00:37:06.69 and he was executed 00:37:06.72\00:37:08.72 but, that ends up with the four sons 00:37:08.76\00:37:11.76 that David loses that was foretold. 00:37:11.79\00:37:15.00 So David gets to see Solomon sitting on the throne 00:37:15.03\00:37:18.33 and David lifts his hand, he praises Lord, he says, 00:37:18.37\00:37:20.60 "Praise God, who's allowed me to live 00:37:20.64\00:37:23.07 and see your promise fulfilled," 00:37:23.10\00:37:25.97 'cause God had promised David, 00:37:26.01\00:37:27.31 "You will not fail to have a man sit on the throne 00:37:27.34\00:37:30.11 until the Messiah comes." 00:37:30.15\00:37:32.05 And he sees the next in succession 00:37:32.08\00:37:34.92 and he's encouraged by that. 00:37:34.95\00:37:36.22 Now Solomon, we're not sure, 00:37:36.25\00:37:37.92 he may have been 25 to 30 years of age at this time, 00:37:37.95\00:37:41.86 so he's still comparatively young. 00:37:41.89\00:37:43.69 You remember when he begins to reign, he says, 00:37:43.73\00:37:45.33 "I'm just a child, I don't know how to go out 00:37:45.36\00:37:47.30 or to come in." 00:37:47.30\00:37:48.83 So Adonijah's rebellion is put down 00:37:48.86\00:37:52.10 but David's not done yet. 00:37:52.13\00:37:53.37 He still had a few good days 00:37:53.40\00:37:54.64 where he get up and move around, 00:37:54.67\00:37:56.37 maybe in the summertime it was a little warmer. 00:37:56.40\00:37:59.57 And you read in 1 Chronicles 29, 00:37:59.61\00:38:01.61 he gets all the elders together. 00:38:01.64\00:38:04.51 And he says, "This is the most important thing on my heart 00:38:04.55\00:38:08.28 is the building up of God's kingdom." 00:38:08.32\00:38:11.92 He says, "Now for the house of my God, 00:38:11.95\00:38:14.09 I have prepared with all of my might. 00:38:14.12\00:38:17.26 Gold for the things of gold to be made of gold, 00:38:17.29\00:38:20.13 silver for the things of silver, 00:38:20.16\00:38:22.10 bronze for the things of bronze, 00:38:22.13\00:38:23.57 iron for the things of iron, wood for the things of woods, 00:38:23.60\00:38:25.93 onyx stones, stones to be set, 00:38:25.97\00:38:28.67 glistening stones of various colors, 00:38:28.70\00:38:30.87 all kinds of precious stones and marble slabs in abundance." 00:38:30.91\00:38:34.04 Now, why is he got all this equipment? 00:38:34.08\00:38:36.51 He is getting all the materials together 00:38:36.54\00:38:39.31 to build a house for God, a beautiful house. 00:38:39.35\00:38:42.25 He looks out the window and he sees 00:38:42.28\00:38:43.55 the ark of God is in a tent, 00:38:43.59\00:38:46.25 and he wants to build up a beautiful house for God. 00:38:46.29\00:38:49.82 "I have given to the house of my God over above 00:38:49.86\00:38:52.53 that I prepare for the house, the holy house 00:38:52.56\00:38:54.93 of my own special treasure of gold and silver." 00:38:54.96\00:38:58.67 And he so inspirers them. 00:38:58.70\00:39:00.77 And when he saw that ended up, 00:39:00.80\00:39:02.50 he literally gave, I'm not exaggerating, 00:39:02.54\00:39:04.81 tons of gold and silver and gems 00:39:04.84\00:39:09.51 to be put into the temple of God. 00:39:09.54\00:39:11.28 I've always wondered why, when they talk about 00:39:11.31\00:39:13.21 the ancient wonders of the world, 00:39:13.25\00:39:14.52 they don't list the temple of Solomon, 00:39:14.55\00:39:16.58 because the temple that Solomon built 00:39:16.62\00:39:18.12 had so much precious metal and gold in it, 00:39:18.15\00:39:20.59 it was phenomenal. 00:39:20.62\00:39:22.56 I mean, it does comment, when Nebuchadnezzar destroyed 00:39:22.59\00:39:24.83 Solomon's temple that they couldn't even tally 00:39:24.86\00:39:27.46 all the bronze that had been put into it. 00:39:27.50\00:39:30.77 So after David does this, he says, 00:39:30.80\00:39:32.90 "Look, I've taken everything I've amassed over the years 00:39:32.93\00:39:36.60 by conquering these nations," whenever he'd conquer them, 00:39:36.64\00:39:38.71 it said talk about the treasure and the revenue 00:39:38.74\00:39:40.51 and the taxes that came in, 00:39:40.54\00:39:42.04 and there was just warehouses full of riches. 00:39:42.08\00:39:45.31 David said, "I want this to go to build up the house of God. 00:39:45.35\00:39:48.48 All these other pagan nations 00:39:48.52\00:39:49.82 have their gods that aren't gods. 00:39:49.85\00:39:51.09 We're going to have a house 00:39:51.12\00:39:52.19 dedicated to the service of God 00:39:52.22\00:39:53.92 that's gonna be unlike anything else." 00:39:53.96\00:39:55.52 That was his passion. 00:39:55.56\00:39:56.93 What's the passion of Jesus? 00:39:56.96\00:40:00.00 Didn't Jesus... 00:40:00.03\00:40:01.60 What was Jesus' job? 00:40:01.63\00:40:03.43 Carpenter. 00:40:03.47\00:40:04.73 What did He build? A temple. 00:40:04.77\00:40:07.50 You are that temple. 00:40:07.54\00:40:09.14 We are living stones in the temple of God, 00:40:09.17\00:40:11.27 isn't that what the Bible says? 00:40:11.31\00:40:12.77 Christ is a foundation stone. 00:40:12.81\00:40:14.61 He said, "We're part of the body of Christ." 00:40:14.64\00:40:17.51 Jesus came to build a house. 00:40:17.55\00:40:19.41 You and I are the house that Jesus built. 00:40:19.45\00:40:22.15 And so the passion of David was to build up the house, 00:40:22.18\00:40:24.75 the passion of Jesus was to build up the house 00:40:24.79\00:40:27.26 to give glory to God. 00:40:27.29\00:40:28.69 That's why He's working in our lives every day, 00:40:28.72\00:40:30.83 so we might become like Him and give Him glory. 00:40:30.86\00:40:33.83 Amen? Amen. 00:40:33.86\00:40:35.66 And then after he gives, it says in 1 Chronicles 29:6, 00:40:35.70\00:40:40.30 "The leaders of the father's house 00:40:40.34\00:40:42.24 and the leaders of the tribes of Israel 00:40:42.27\00:40:43.81 and the captains of thousands and hundreds 00:40:43.84\00:40:46.24 with the officers offered willingly." 00:40:46.27\00:40:49.28 They were so inspired by David's sacrifice 00:40:49.31\00:40:52.21 that they also gave. 00:40:52.25\00:40:53.92 And so this warehouse is full of treasure 00:40:53.95\00:40:56.62 to build up the house of God. 00:40:56.65\00:40:58.59 1 Chronicles 29, David then praise, 00:40:58.62\00:41:01.99 "Now therefore our God, we thank You 00:41:02.02\00:41:04.06 and we praise Your glorious name, 00:41:04.09\00:41:06.46 but who am I and what are my people 00:41:06.49\00:41:09.03 that we should be able to offer so willingly is this, 00:41:09.06\00:41:11.97 for all things come from You 00:41:12.00\00:41:14.47 and of Your own we have given You. 00:41:14.50\00:41:16.77 Oh, Lord, our God, 00:41:16.81\00:41:18.17 all this abundance that we have prepared 00:41:18.21\00:41:20.18 to build You a house for Your holy name 00:41:20.21\00:41:22.68 is from Your hand and it is all Your own." 00:41:22.71\00:41:26.48 Now I'd be a miss 00:41:26.51\00:41:27.52 if I didn't use this opportunity to remind you, 00:41:27.55\00:41:29.52 that's something we're involved in now, 00:41:29.55\00:41:31.65 trying to build up the house of God, 00:41:31.69\00:41:33.19 to get the message in all the world. 00:41:33.22\00:41:34.49 Amen? 00:41:34.52\00:41:35.56 And when we give to God, are we giving Him our stuff 00:41:35.59\00:41:38.83 or we just returning what's already His? 00:41:38.86\00:41:42.16 Isn't that what David said. 00:41:42.20\00:41:44.30 Now, we get to the last words of David. 00:41:44.33\00:41:46.47 You can find this in both Chronicles 00:41:46.50\00:41:48.34 and 2 Samuel 23:1. 00:41:48.37\00:41:52.31 "These are the last words of David, 00:41:52.34\00:41:54.48 thus says David, the son of Jesse, 00:41:54.51\00:41:56.78 thus is the man raised up on high, 00:41:56.81\00:41:58.88 the anointed of the God of Jacob 00:41:58.91\00:42:01.12 and the sweet Psalmist of Israel..." 00:42:01.15\00:42:02.55 He's talking about himself, 00:42:02.58\00:42:03.69 but he knew that God spoke for him, 00:42:03.72\00:42:05.75 through him. 00:42:05.79\00:42:06.86 He says, "The spirit of the Lord spoke by me 00:42:06.89\00:42:10.16 and His word was on my tongue. 00:42:10.19\00:42:12.29 The God of Israel said, the rock of Israel spoke to me. 00:42:12.33\00:42:16.83 He... "And here's what he says, 00:42:16.87\00:42:18.07 "He who rules over men must be just ruling in the fear of God 00:42:18.10\00:42:23.00 and He will be like the light of the morning 00:42:23.04\00:42:25.27 when the sun rises, a morning without clouds, 00:42:25.31\00:42:27.98 like the tender grass springing from the earth, 00:42:28.01\00:42:30.71 like the clear shining after the rain." 00:42:30.75\00:42:34.62 So some of his final words, he gives the charge to Solomon. 00:42:34.65\00:42:38.65 He tells Solomon in what was a private meeting probably 00:42:38.69\00:42:42.06 that was later recorded, 00:42:42.09\00:42:43.76 "There's some things you need to mop up 00:42:43.79\00:42:45.33 after I'm gone. 00:42:45.36\00:42:47.30 There are some people who are still guilty out there 00:42:47.30\00:42:48.96 that are going to be a threat to you, 00:42:49.00\00:42:50.10 you need to take care of." 00:42:50.13\00:42:52.00 And David tells Solomon how to deal with those things 00:42:52.03\00:42:55.37 and you can read about it, and Solomon does 00:42:55.40\00:42:57.94 and he ends up with 40 years of a peaceful kingdom. 00:42:57.97\00:43:01.48 And then he goes on and says in 1 Kings 2, 00:43:01.51\00:43:04.68 "David rested with his fathers 00:43:04.71\00:43:06.88 and was buried in the City of David 00:43:06.92\00:43:09.35 and the period that David 00:43:09.38\00:43:10.55 reigned over Israel was 40 years." 00:43:10.59\00:43:14.09 Jesus said this generation will not pass away 00:43:14.12\00:43:17.56 till all these things be fulfilled. 00:43:17.59\00:43:19.59 Jesus talks about a 40 year period of time. 00:43:19.63\00:43:22.33 And it goes on to say, 00:43:22.36\00:43:23.47 "He was 33 years in Jerusalem, seven years in Hebron." 00:43:23.50\00:43:27.44 How old was Jesus when He died? Thirty three and a half. 00:43:27.47\00:43:32.61 "And Solomon sat on the throne of his father David 00:43:32.64\00:43:35.24 and the kingdom was firmly established." 00:43:35.28\00:43:38.51 You know, in conclusion of our series on David, 00:43:38.55\00:43:41.58 the thing that I think we should remember 00:43:41.62\00:43:44.52 is the Bible tells us 00:43:44.55\00:43:45.69 that David was a man after God's own heart. 00:43:45.72\00:43:48.22 I'm actually quoting Paul in the New Testament. 00:43:48.26\00:43:51.39 "After removing Saul He made David their king. 00:43:51.43\00:43:54.93 He testified concerning him, 00:43:54.96\00:43:57.17 I have found David, the son of Jesse, 00:43:57.20\00:43:59.40 in him a man after my own heart. 00:43:59.43\00:44:02.77 And he will do everything I want him to do." 00:44:02.80\00:44:05.77 Now I thought that was strange. 00:44:05.81\00:44:07.08 You would say that, 00:44:07.11\00:44:08.08 "How could David be a man after God's own heart, 00:44:08.11\00:44:09.91 didn't he blow it a few times?" 00:44:09.94\00:44:12.71 But you know, the Bible record is, He says, 00:44:12.75\00:44:14.85 "David kept my commandments." 00:44:14.88\00:44:17.72 Look at 1 Kings 14:8, 00:44:17.75\00:44:20.22 "You have not been like my servant David 00:44:20.26\00:44:22.32 who kept my commandments and followed me 00:44:22.36\00:44:24.36 with all of his heart 00:44:24.39\00:44:25.83 doing only that which was right in my eyes." 00:44:25.86\00:44:27.93 What's the great commandment that God gives us? 00:44:27.96\00:44:30.27 Thou shall love the Lord thy God with all... 00:44:30.30\00:44:33.50 It's in the Old Testament, Jesus repeats it in the new. 00:44:33.54\00:44:36.37 David loved the Lord with all of his heart. 00:44:36.40\00:44:38.47 It's good to know David's life is not being judged 00:44:38.51\00:44:41.88 by that serious defect 00:44:41.91\00:44:43.98 in numbering Israel or with Bathsheba. 00:44:44.01\00:44:47.98 God's looking at the panorama of his life 00:44:48.02\00:44:51.02 and did he end with the love for the Lord. 00:44:51.05\00:44:54.19 You know, I wondered, why does it say 00:44:54.22\00:44:56.29 that David was a man after God's own heart? 00:44:56.32\00:44:58.63 And I started to itemize 00:44:58.66\00:44:59.96 some of the characteristics of David. 00:45:00.06\00:45:03.03 David was forgiving, Jesus is forgiving. 00:45:03.06\00:45:06.20 I mean, Saul tried to kill him several times 00:45:06.23\00:45:07.77 and David kept forgiving. 00:45:07.80\00:45:09.00 He was willing to forgive his own son. 00:45:09.04\00:45:10.24 He was forgiving, you all agree? 00:45:10.27\00:45:11.91 Yes. David was obedient. 00:45:11.94\00:45:14.68 Psalm 119, "Give me an understanding 00:45:14.71\00:45:17.15 and I will keep your law and obey it with all my heart." 00:45:17.18\00:45:21.25 David was humble. He let Shimei curse him. 00:45:21.28\00:45:26.25 Psalm 62, "Lowborn men are 00:45:26.29\00:45:29.79 but a breath and highborn are just a lie." 00:45:29.82\00:45:32.66 David understood that power can corrupt. 00:45:32.69\00:45:37.00 He was a generous man, 00:45:37.03\00:45:38.63 donates most of his vast wealth to build the house of God. 00:45:38.67\00:45:42.97 He says in Psalm 54, 00:45:43.00\00:45:44.24 "I will freely sacrifice to you." 00:45:44.27\00:45:47.44 And then I started looking at the characteristics of David 00:45:47.48\00:45:49.74 and it made me go to Galatians. 00:45:49.78\00:45:51.68 You know what Galatians says the fruit of the Spirit is? 00:45:51.71\00:45:55.12 Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, 00:45:55.15\00:45:57.92 self control, gentleness. 00:45:57.95\00:46:00.46 Was David loving? 00:46:00.49\00:46:01.96 David said, "I love you, Lord, my strength." 00:46:01.99\00:46:04.83 It's showing you, he loved Jonathan, 00:46:04.86\00:46:06.09 he loved his son. 00:46:06.13\00:46:08.40 Did David have joy? 00:46:08.43\00:46:10.63 He danced before the Lord. 00:46:10.67\00:46:12.90 He knew about joy. Read some of the psalms. 00:46:12.93\00:46:16.47 Did David have peace? Have you read Psalm 23? 00:46:16.50\00:46:19.84 "He makes me to lie down in green pastures, 00:46:19.87\00:46:22.88 He leads me beside the still waters." 00:46:22.91\00:46:26.01 Did David have patience? 00:46:26.05\00:46:28.12 He waited for years for God 00:46:28.15\00:46:29.52 to fulfill His promise that he would be king. 00:46:29.55\00:46:31.45 He did not take it ahead of time, he waited. 00:46:31.49\00:46:34.12 He could have killed Saul, he said, 00:46:34.16\00:46:35.96 "No, it's not God's timing." 00:46:35.99\00:46:38.19 Did David have kindness? 00:46:38.23\00:46:40.56 Remember he thought about Mephibosheth, 00:46:40.60\00:46:42.23 this cripple of an enemy king 00:46:42.26\00:46:45.73 that he brings into his house and he shows him mercy. 00:46:45.77\00:46:49.24 Did David have goodness? 00:46:49.27\00:46:50.97 Again, Psalm 23, 00:46:51.01\00:46:52.17 "Surely goodness and mercy will follow me 00:46:52.21\00:46:54.78 all the days of my life." 00:46:54.81\00:46:57.15 Did he have faithfulness? 00:46:57.18\00:46:58.85 When he made a covenant, did he keep his promise? 00:46:58.88\00:47:01.85 He did. Did he have gentleness? 00:47:01.88\00:47:04.72 Psalm 18:35, "Your gentleness has made me great." 00:47:04.75\00:47:08.22 What does it say about Jesus? "I am meek and lonely." 00:47:08.26\00:47:11.63 Jesus was gentle. 00:47:11.66\00:47:13.33 Did David have self control? 00:47:13.36\00:47:15.90 When they brought him water and he was thirsty, 00:47:15.93\00:47:17.97 because they risked their lives, 00:47:18.00\00:47:19.07 he poured it on the ground. 00:47:19.10\00:47:21.34 He was a man that had these gifts of the spirit. 00:47:21.37\00:47:25.17 David was respectful, he was reverent, 00:47:25.21\00:47:27.91 he was trusting, 00:47:27.94\00:47:29.54 and when he did sinned, he quickly repented. 00:47:29.58\00:47:32.51 Whenever he was shown that it was wrong, 00:47:32.55\00:47:34.85 he repented. 00:47:34.88\00:47:35.95 He was a man after God's own heart. 00:47:35.98\00:47:38.09 And so, you know, in the Bible 00:47:38.12\00:47:39.29 we see that in the life of David we see Jesus, 00:47:39.32\00:47:42.42 but we also see somebody that was very human, 00:47:42.46\00:47:45.86 that we can all relate to, 00:47:45.89\00:47:47.66 that God took from a very low place 00:47:47.66\00:47:50.47 and brought him to a very high place. 00:47:50.50\00:47:52.73 You know, we started out 00:47:52.77\00:47:54.30 poor like David and God is calling us 00:47:54.34\00:47:56.34 to the palace which is, of course, 00:47:56.37\00:47:58.71 the story of the Bible. 00:47:58.74\00:47:59.74 God takes us from poverty and He gives us riches, 00:47:59.77\00:48:04.68 and we go from this low station in life... 00:48:04.71\00:48:06.72 David wasn't even invited to the supper 00:48:06.75\00:48:08.88 when he ends up being the one that's anointed, 00:48:08.92\00:48:10.95 they didn't even think to invite him, 00:48:10.99\00:48:12.05 "Oh, he's out there following the sheep." 00:48:12.09\00:48:14.26 And God takes him and He makes him king 00:48:14.29\00:48:16.32 and he ends his life in glory. 00:48:16.36\00:48:18.13 And God is calling us to those lives. 00:48:18.16\00:48:21.86 It's like the 23 Psalm, you know how it ends? 00:48:21.90\00:48:26.47 "I would dwell in the house of the Lord for ever." 00:48:26.50\00:48:29.87 Amazing facts changed lives. 00:48:33.84\00:48:36.98 You know, we grew up in a neighborhood 00:48:42.35\00:48:43.59 up in the Midwest 00:48:43.62\00:48:45.39 that was pretty bad neighborhood. 00:48:45.42\00:48:47.29 And when I became a teenager, 00:48:47.32\00:48:50.19 I started using drugs, I was on... 00:48:50.23\00:48:52.16 I started using meth when I was like, 00:48:52.19\00:48:54.03 I think 16, 15 something like that. 00:48:54.10\00:48:56.77 I was having some problems in my life, 00:48:56.80\00:48:58.27 I really didn't know how to deal with. 00:48:58.30\00:49:02.34 The only thing I really knew was violence. 00:49:02.37\00:49:05.41 So this night here I was going to inflict violence on myself. 00:49:05.44\00:49:09.18 I was really high and really depressed 00:49:09.21\00:49:12.15 so I took, you know, I had this. 00:49:12.18\00:49:13.62 40 caliber, so I remember 00:49:13.65\00:49:15.12 I put one in the chamber and I stuck it 00:49:15.15\00:49:16.75 to the side of my head like this. 00:49:16.79\00:49:20.66 And that gun had a hair trigger, 00:49:20.69\00:49:23.63 you known, I remember I was tapping it 00:49:23.66\00:49:26.73 'cause a part of me said, "No, I don't want to do this." 00:49:26.76\00:49:31.33 But there was something very evil present there saying, 00:49:31.37\00:49:33.80 "Do it." 00:49:33.84\00:49:34.84 I just said to myself, I said, 00:49:34.87\00:49:37.57 "God, if you're real show yourself to me." 00:49:37.61\00:49:43.18 My mother took me to church when I was a little kid. 00:49:43.21\00:49:47.12 And we used to sing, 'Jesus loves me' 00:49:47.15\00:49:49.32 and I remembered that song. 00:49:49.35\00:49:51.59 It started playing in my mind. 00:49:51.62\00:49:54.62 And almost had like a vision of me as a little kid. 00:49:54.66\00:49:57.06 You know, in Sabbath school 00:50:00.43\00:50:02.56 we used to bang those sticks together. 00:50:02.60\00:50:08.30 And sing, 'Jesus loves me'. 00:50:08.34\00:50:11.04 And I heard that in my mind. 00:50:11.07\00:50:15.68 So I said, "Wow." 00:50:15.71\00:50:19.85 So I just kind of, like, put the gun down 00:50:19.88\00:50:21.78 and I kind of fell on my bedside there 00:50:21.82\00:50:23.75 and I said, "Lord." 00:50:23.79\00:50:26.82 I just basically just prayed this crazy prayer. 00:50:26.86\00:50:29.22 I says, you know, I told Him everything 00:50:29.26\00:50:31.03 that was wrong with me. 00:50:31.06\00:50:32.46 And I remember one day I was driving around, 00:50:32.49\00:50:34.23 I kind of felt lost and I drove by this church 00:50:34.30\00:50:37.30 and I've seen Tom out there. 00:50:37.33\00:50:38.87 Tom was just out there watering flowers, you know. 00:50:38.90\00:50:42.74 So I caught a vision of the side of my eyes, 00:50:42.77\00:50:46.31 this big husky guy with tattoos 00:50:46.34\00:50:49.44 walking up and said, hello. 00:50:49.48\00:50:53.45 So I asked him if I can help him. 00:50:53.48\00:50:57.02 And he told me that he drives by the church occasionally. 00:50:57.05\00:51:02.99 Every time he goes by, 00:51:03.02\00:51:04.39 he's thinking that he should stop in. 00:51:04.43\00:51:06.29 After he showed me around the church... 00:51:06.33\00:51:10.53 You know, I was like, 00:51:10.57\00:51:11.60 "Okay, man, it's nice meeting you," 00:51:11.63\00:51:13.87 and this and that. 00:51:13.90\00:51:15.04 So I jumped in my car 00:51:15.07\00:51:16.84 and I started heading down the driveway. 00:51:16.87\00:51:19.71 And the next thing, you know, in like my peripheral vision, 00:51:19.74\00:51:23.11 I see him coming around the corner 00:51:23.14\00:51:26.21 like Jerry Rice run in a football. 00:51:26.25\00:51:28.62 No, not that fast but, you know, 00:51:28.65\00:51:30.75 he was taken off after me and he says, 00:51:30.79\00:51:33.69 "Hey, hey, hey, hold on, hold on." 00:51:33.72\00:51:35.96 I asked him if he would like to have some Bible studies 00:51:35.99\00:51:38.09 and he said, "Yeah." 00:51:38.13\00:51:40.03 He would come by the house, we'd all start, 00:51:40.06\00:51:41.80 we'd start hiding a beer cans 00:51:41.83\00:51:43.57 and trying to air out the weed smell 00:51:43.60\00:51:46.87 and there was a presence that came with Tom 00:51:46.90\00:51:50.27 that was comforting. 00:51:50.31\00:51:52.31 You know what I mean? 00:51:52.34\00:51:53.91 Even though I wasn't taking the Bible studies 00:51:53.94\00:51:55.88 as serious as I should have, 00:51:55.91\00:51:57.85 looking back there was just a presence about him 00:51:57.88\00:52:01.25 being there in the house that was comforting. 00:52:01.28\00:52:05.15 I told Tom, I said, 00:52:05.19\00:52:06.19 "Tom, you know you can't win everybody." 00:52:06.22\00:52:08.19 I looked at him and I knew, I said to him, 00:52:08.22\00:52:11.66 "Rueben, I never get anybody." 00:52:11.69\00:52:14.83 I said, "The Holy Spirit will do that." 00:52:14.83\00:52:19.17 And I kind of in my heart knew 00:52:19.20\00:52:21.20 that the Holy Spirit was gonna work on Reuben. 00:52:21.24\00:52:23.74 So then Tom, kind of, left the picture for a while 00:52:23.77\00:52:27.58 and then I think, one day at my mother's house 00:52:27.61\00:52:29.14 they were watching 00:52:29.18\00:52:30.21 the final events of Bible prophecy, 00:52:30.25\00:52:32.71 so I watched that and... 00:52:32.75\00:52:36.72 I remember the scene 00:52:36.75\00:52:39.09 where they had the hellfire and stuff. 00:52:39.12\00:52:42.42 You know, they're outside the city 00:52:42.46\00:52:44.13 and it showed the hellfire coming down 00:52:44.16\00:52:47.76 and burning people and stuff. 00:52:47.83\00:52:49.23 And I remember saying to myself, 00:52:49.26\00:52:53.17 "That's where I will be right there." 00:52:53.20\00:52:55.60 After the hellfire scene, I saw the saints in the city, 00:52:55.64\00:53:01.98 in the New Jerusalem and Jesus recreating the earth. 00:53:02.01\00:53:06.82 And I said... 00:53:06.85\00:53:07.92 "I want that to be my... me and my family." 00:53:10.99\00:53:14.19 There was something about the way Doug preached 00:53:14.22\00:53:16.02 and things that I felt that touched me. 00:53:16.06\00:53:19.59 Because he's kind of like myself, you know, he's... 00:53:19.63\00:53:23.80 He didn't grow up like that, you know. 00:53:23.83\00:53:26.30 He'd done drugs and things. 00:53:26.33\00:53:29.37 So I kind of found these common grounds 00:53:29.40\00:53:31.07 that I have with him. 00:53:31.11\00:53:33.01 And I liked how he just kind of like 00:53:33.04\00:53:34.51 kept it real with his preaching. 00:53:34.54\00:53:35.94 And then Pastor Rod Lee came to the church 00:53:35.98\00:53:39.85 and I got to know him very well. 00:53:39.88\00:53:42.45 And we started doing some finishing studies. 00:53:42.48\00:53:45.99 He wanted to make sure I understand what I was doing 00:53:46.02\00:53:49.42 and things and baptized me, my wife, my brother. 00:53:49.46\00:53:54.36 No matter what you've done, where you come from, 00:53:54.36\00:53:59.03 where you've been, 00:53:59.07\00:54:00.34 no matter how bad of a sinner you think you are, 00:54:00.37\00:54:04.61 the Lord Jesus loves you no matter what you've done. 00:54:04.64\00:54:08.34 Friends, it's because of God's blessing 00:54:08.38\00:54:10.75 and your support, thousands of others 00:54:10.78\00:54:13.08 just like Reuben 00:54:13.11\00:54:14.35 have found Jesus and eternal life. 00:54:14.38\00:54:16.75 Friends, are you afraid of heights? 00:54:38.31\00:54:39.87 If so, you might want to look away right now. 00:54:39.91\00:54:42.84 One of the most famous attractions 00:54:42.88\00:54:44.45 in the San Francisco Bay Area 00:54:44.48\00:54:46.28 is the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. 00:54:46.31\00:54:49.02 While this world famous bridge was named 00:54:49.05\00:54:51.12 as one of the Seven Wonders of the modern world, 00:54:51.15\00:54:53.69 few people know the story of the brave men 00:54:53.72\00:54:55.69 who were involved in its construction 00:54:55.72\00:54:57.59 and also known as The Half Way to Hell Club. 00:54:57.63\00:55:01.63 Designed by a group of visionary engineers 00:55:01.66\00:55:03.97 at 4200 feet from end to end, 00:55:04.00\00:55:06.40 the Golden Gate Bridge was at one time 00:55:06.43\00:55:08.50 the longest suspension bridge in the world. 00:55:08.54\00:55:11.44 During its construction from 1933 to 1937 00:55:11.47\00:55:15.28 the Golden Gate Bridge 00:55:15.31\00:55:16.44 had one of the best safety construction 00:55:16.48\00:55:18.25 records of any project during that time. 00:55:18.28\00:55:21.05 Keep in mind, 00:55:21.08\00:55:22.12 they would factor in and calculate 00:55:22.15\00:55:23.62 that one man would die 00:55:23.65\00:55:25.12 for every million dollars that was spent. 00:55:25.15\00:55:27.19 So with a budget of $35 million dollars, 00:55:27.22\00:55:29.86 they knew that loss of life would be unacceptable. 00:55:29.89\00:55:32.63 This is why the chief engineer Joseph B. Strauss 00:55:32.66\00:55:35.53 was absolutely adamant about using 00:55:35.56\00:55:37.47 the most rigorous safety precautions 00:55:37.50\00:55:39.70 that had ever been used in bridge building. 00:55:39.73\00:55:41.97 He had a local manufacturer of safety equipment, 00:55:42.00\00:55:44.84 design special headgear 00:55:44.87\00:55:46.14 that he insisted be worn on every job. 00:55:46.17\00:55:48.41 This became the prototype for the modern hard hat, 00:55:48.44\00:55:51.21 worn for the first time ever, 00:55:51.25\00:55:52.88 but the safety precautions went even farther. 00:55:52.91\00:55:55.48 Strauss provided a special hand and face cream 00:55:55.52\00:55:58.25 to protect their skin from the cold biting wind 00:55:58.29\00:56:01.26 and glare free goggles to protect their eyes. 00:56:01.29\00:56:03.89 In addition they also ate a special diet 00:56:03.93\00:56:06.46 to help ward off dizziness 00:56:06.49\00:56:08.10 when they were working at those epic heights. 00:56:08.13\00:56:10.40 But the most conspicuous safety precaution 00:56:10.43\00:56:12.80 was a gigantic net 00:56:12.83\00:56:14.44 that was suspended from end to end 00:56:14.47\00:56:16.34 under the entire construction area of the Golden Gate Bridge. 00:56:16.37\00:56:20.54 In fact during construction 00:56:20.58\00:56:22.81 this net saved the lives of 19 men 00:56:22.84\00:56:25.98 who later became known as The Halfway to Hell Club. 00:56:26.01\00:56:29.78 Now you need to keep in mind, 00:56:29.82\00:56:30.85 these were some of the most dangerous construction 00:56:30.89\00:56:33.12 conditions you can imagine. 00:56:33.15\00:56:34.99 The wind was constantly blowing, 00:56:35.02\00:56:37.46 they were walking around on iron 00:56:37.49\00:56:39.26 that sometimes had ice from the freezing fog. 00:56:39.29\00:56:42.43 In places, they were over 700 feet 00:56:42.46\00:56:45.03 above the icy waters, 00:56:45.07\00:56:47.30 yet the men coming from all walks of life 00:56:47.34\00:56:49.60 were willing to take these risks 00:56:49.64\00:56:51.41 because it was during the Great Depression, 00:56:51.44\00:56:53.61 and they would get paid up to $11 a day 00:56:53.64\00:56:56.24 which was a fortune back then. 00:56:56.28\00:56:58.81 One of the other benefits of the net 00:56:58.85\00:57:01.38 was they discovered that the men 00:57:01.42\00:57:02.75 were much more courageous 00:57:02.78\00:57:03.85 even though they were walking high 00:57:03.89\00:57:05.59 on those slippery surfaces 00:57:05.62\00:57:07.36 because they knew there was a mechanism 00:57:07.39\00:57:08.99 to protect them if they should fall. 00:57:09.02\00:57:11.19 This gave them the confidence and the courage to press on 00:57:11.23\00:57:14.10 and get the bridge built in record time. 00:57:14.13\00:57:16.50 You know, friends, as Christians 00:57:16.53\00:57:17.77 we have a great work to do. 00:57:17.80\00:57:19.53 The Bible tells us that we get to participate with Jesus 00:57:19.57\00:57:22.77 in building a bridge that connects heaven and earth. 00:57:22.80\00:57:25.91 And there are dangers along the way. 00:57:25.94\00:57:27.91 The devil would like to paralyze us with fear 00:57:27.94\00:57:30.41 that we might fall or make a mistake 00:57:30.45\00:57:32.65 but we know that Jesus 00:57:32.68\00:57:33.82 has provided a safety net for us 00:57:33.85\00:57:35.78 and we don't have to be afraid. 00:57:35.82\00:57:37.29 We can press on with confidence 00:57:37.32\00:57:39.02 because the promises in the Book of Jude 24, 00:57:39.05\00:57:41.86 "He is able to keep us from falling." 00:57:41.89\00:57:44.33 But sometimes we make mistakes, 00:57:44.36\00:57:46.33 still don't be discouraged, friends, 00:57:46.36\00:57:48.06 if you read in 1 John 2:1, the Bible says, 00:57:48.10\00:57:51.67 "If we fall, if we sin, 00:57:51.70\00:57:53.70 we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ." 00:57:53.74\00:57:56.54 So let's press on together 00:57:56.57\00:57:57.87 and build that bridge with Christ. 00:57:57.91\00:57:59.84 For life changing Christian resources, 00:58:08.65\00:58:11.02 visit afbookstore.com. 00:58:11.05\00:58:13.39
