Really, when we talk about David, 00:00:15.78\00:00:17.31 we're talking about Jesus 00:00:17.35\00:00:19.18 because Jesus is known as the son of David, 00:00:19.21\00:00:22.28 and David is one of the most powerful types 00:00:22.32\00:00:25.62 and allegories in his life of the Messiah. 00:00:25.65\00:00:29.26 And so really, this is a study about Christ 00:00:29.29\00:00:31.96 as much as anything. 00:00:31.99\00:00:33.26 Our study today is dealing with Securing the Kingdom. 00:00:33.29\00:00:37.90 And our goal is going to be to cover 2 Samuel 1-8. 00:00:37.93\00:00:44.84 Now when we left off last time, we realized that 00:00:44.87\00:00:49.44 there was a tremendous tragedy in the kingdom. 00:00:49.48\00:00:52.55 After 40 years of reigning, he was called, 00:00:52.58\00:00:56.02 initially, he was a good king, spirit-filled, 00:00:56.05\00:00:59.75 but Saul became proud along the way 00:00:59.79\00:01:01.66 and he started drifting further and further from God 00:01:01.69\00:01:05.06 until finally he was basically demon-possessed. 00:01:05.09\00:01:10.27 And in a massive battle with the Philistines, 00:01:10.30\00:01:13.94 Saul, seeing that he was mortally wounded, 00:01:13.97\00:01:16.14 he asked his armor-bearer if he would kill him. 00:01:16.17\00:01:19.14 The armor-bearer was afraid to do it. 00:01:19.17\00:01:22.08 He had spent his whole life protecting the king. 00:01:22.11\00:01:24.75 And not wanting the Philistines to capture him 00:01:24.78\00:01:28.25 while he was still alive and torture him to death, 00:01:28.28\00:01:30.85 Saul fell on his own sword. 00:01:30.89\00:01:32.59 And you've probably heard that expression 00:01:32.62\00:01:34.29 before "He fell on his sword." 00:01:34.32\00:01:36.99 And when the armor-bearer saw that, he fell on his sword. 00:01:37.03\00:01:40.53 And there was a great... 00:01:40.56\00:01:46.37 Great defeat in the battle that day. 00:01:46.40\00:01:49.87 The Philistines not only killed thousands of Israel soldiers, 00:01:49.90\00:01:53.64 they then annexed a number of kingdoms. 00:01:53.68\00:01:56.98 All through Saul's reign, he had pushed back 00:01:57.01\00:01:59.65 and he had fought against the Philistines, 00:01:59.68\00:02:01.15 he had reclaimed territory of Israel, 00:02:01.18\00:02:04.09 but in this one decisive battle, 00:02:04.12\00:02:06.79 the Philistines reclaimed everything 00:02:06.82\00:02:09.46 that Saul had seized back before 00:02:09.49\00:02:13.96 and they lost a lot of ground. 00:02:14.00\00:02:16.83 We'll, David doesn't know about this. 00:02:16.87\00:02:18.30 You know, they didn't have internet, 00:02:18.33\00:02:19.47 they didn't have satellite news back then, 00:02:19.50\00:02:21.94 and so David is several days away. 00:02:21.97\00:02:24.37 If you remember, David had spent a year and a half 00:02:24.41\00:02:27.31 living among the Philistines, 00:02:27.34\00:02:28.71 pretending he was working with the Philistines 00:02:28.74\00:02:31.25 when in fact he was raiding the Amalekites. 00:02:31.28\00:02:35.12 David now had gone up 00:02:35.15\00:02:36.62 as though he was going to fight against Israel 00:02:36.65\00:02:38.72 with the Philistines. 00:02:38.75\00:02:40.09 He left his family in a town called Ziklag 00:02:40.12\00:02:42.59 along with the families of all the soldiers. 00:02:42.62\00:02:45.53 And when they got back, they found out the Amalekites, 00:02:45.56\00:02:47.86 in their absence, they had sacked, conquered, 00:02:47.93\00:02:51.20 burnt the city of Ziklag, carried away David's family. 00:02:51.23\00:02:54.97 And David and his soldiers went and recovered everything. 00:02:55.00\00:03:00.04 They managed to defeat the Amalekites. 00:03:00.08\00:03:02.21 There was another big battle and hundreds were slain. 00:03:02.24\00:03:05.48 It doesn't record that David lost a single man 00:03:05.51\00:03:07.88 in that battle, 00:03:07.92\00:03:09.25 but they brought everything back. 00:03:09.28\00:03:11.19 They're in the smoldering ruins of Ziklag. 00:03:11.22\00:03:13.36 They're wondering what has become of Israel 00:03:13.39\00:03:15.66 in this battle with the Philistines. 00:03:15.69\00:03:17.73 This is where we take up our story. 00:03:17.76\00:03:19.86 And so if you go to first book... 00:03:19.89\00:03:22.20 I'm sorry, 2 Samuel 1, 00:03:22.23\00:03:25.47 it says, "Now it came to pass after the death of Saul 00:03:25.50\00:03:28.80 when David returned from the slaughter 00:03:28.84\00:03:30.51 of the Amalekites 00:03:30.54\00:03:32.21 and David had stayed there at Ziklag for two days. 00:03:32.24\00:03:34.98 On the third day," 00:03:35.01\00:03:36.51 you know how things often come on the third day Biblically, 00:03:36.54\00:03:39.45 "On the third day, behold it happened 00:03:39.48\00:03:41.12 that a man came from Saul's camp 00:03:41.15\00:03:43.32 with his clothes torn as a sign of mourning, 00:03:43.35\00:03:46.02 dust on his head, 00:03:46.05\00:03:47.69 so it was when he came to David, 00:03:47.72\00:03:49.19 he fell to the ground and prostrated himself 00:03:49.22\00:03:51.96 and David said, 'Where have you come from?' 00:03:51.99\00:03:54.40 He said, 'I've escaped from the camp of Israel.' 00:03:54.46\00:03:57.27 David said, 'How did the matter go. 00:03:57.30\00:03:59.10 What happened with the battle? 00:03:59.13\00:04:00.20 Please tell me.' 00:04:00.24\00:04:01.94 He answered, 'The people have fled from the battle. 00:04:01.97\00:04:04.27 Many of the people are fallen and dead, 00:04:04.31\00:04:06.74 Saul and Jonathan, his son are dead also.' 00:04:06.78\00:04:10.71 And David said to the young man, 00:04:10.75\00:04:12.55 'How do you know that Saul and Jonathan, 00:04:12.58\00:04:14.35 his son, are dead?' 00:04:14.38\00:04:15.98 Then the young man told him, 00:04:16.02\00:04:18.82 'As I happened by chance to be on Mount Gilboa, 00:04:18.85\00:04:21.72 there was Saul leaning on a spear 00:04:21.76\00:04:23.93 and, indeed, the chariots and the horsemen 00:04:23.96\00:04:25.63 followed hard after him 00:04:25.66\00:04:28.03 and when he looked behind him, he saw me and he said, 00:04:28.06\00:04:30.53 'Here am I." 00:04:30.57\00:04:31.60 He said, 'Who are you?' 00:04:31.63\00:04:32.83 He said 'I'm and Amalekite, one of the servants of Israel.' 00:04:32.87\00:04:36.67 He said to me, 'Please stand over me 00:04:36.71\00:04:38.57 and kill me for anguish has come upon me 00:04:38.61\00:04:40.91 but my life is still in me.' 00:04:40.94\00:04:42.21 He was wounded by the archers." 00:04:42.24\00:04:44.35 Now here's where the Amalekite starts telling a big story. 00:04:44.38\00:04:47.58 Didn't happen this way, 00:04:47.62\00:04:49.95 "So I stood over him and I killed him 00:04:49.98\00:04:51.69 because I was sure that he could not live 00:04:51.72\00:04:53.12 after he had fallen 00:04:53.15\00:04:54.52 and I took the crown that was on his head 00:04:54.56\00:04:56.12 and the bracelet that was on his arm 00:04:56.16\00:04:57.79 and have brought them here to my lord." 00:04:57.83\00:05:00.20 And David took hold of his own clothes 00:05:00.23\00:05:02.16 and tore them and so did all the men 00:05:02.20\00:05:04.03 who were with him. 00:05:04.07\00:05:05.37 Now this is really surprising, the Amalekite messenger. 00:05:05.40\00:05:09.04 You see the Amalekite, everyone knew 00:05:09.07\00:05:10.97 that David had been running from Saul for years. 00:05:11.01\00:05:14.68 Everybody knew that Saul had been trying to kill David, 00:05:14.71\00:05:18.28 and now he thinks 00:05:18.31\00:05:20.95 "I'm going to be bringing good news. 00:05:20.98\00:05:22.95 Your enemy, King Saul is dead. 00:05:22.98\00:05:25.49 In fact, here's the crown and here's the bracelet." 00:05:25.52\00:05:28.36 Evidently what happened 00:05:28.39\00:05:30.33 is when Saul was wounded, you know, 00:05:30.36\00:05:32.96 he asked his armor-bearer to kill him, he wouldn't do it. 00:05:32.99\00:05:35.43 He fell on his own sword. 00:05:35.46\00:05:37.00 The Philistines, seeing all these bodies, 00:05:37.03\00:05:39.70 they went on continuing to pursue the living enemy 00:05:39.73\00:05:42.60 and they rode right past Saul in the chaos of war 00:05:42.64\00:05:46.81 and his sons and the Amalekite coming up around sundown, 00:05:46.84\00:05:51.01 he sees the king is dead, 00:05:51.05\00:05:53.45 he sees he has fallen on his own sword, 00:05:53.48\00:05:55.62 and he thinks, "Aha! 00:05:55.65\00:05:58.35 I will get a big reward. 00:05:58.39\00:05:59.52 Rather than just keep the crown, 00:05:59.55\00:06:01.66 I will give the crown to David and the bracelet proof 00:06:01.69\00:06:05.36 because I've borne this message, 00:06:05.39\00:06:07.50 I'll get a reward, he will he happy 00:06:07.56\00:06:09.50 because, you know, after all Saul was trying to kill him." 00:06:09.53\00:06:12.13 That's the way it used to work in antiquity, 00:06:12.17\00:06:14.04 but it also not only did he get rewarded for good news, 00:06:14.07\00:06:16.91 he got punished for bad news. 00:06:16.94\00:06:20.11 And David later he says to this Amalekite messenger, 00:06:20.14\00:06:25.48 he said, "Were you not afraid to lift up your hand 00:06:25.51\00:06:29.65 and kill the Lord's anointed?" 00:06:29.68\00:06:32.32 By the way, this is probably a good place 00:06:32.35\00:06:34.19 if you wanted to take a detour 00:06:34.22\00:06:35.56 and talk about physician-assisted suicide. 00:06:35.59\00:06:38.93 But I'm not going to do that. 00:06:38.96\00:06:40.53 But I will say life is sacred 00:06:40.56\00:06:41.83 and even if a person is near death, 00:06:41.86\00:06:44.47 it doesn't mean you're supposed to dispatch them. 00:06:44.50\00:06:48.17 And David said, "This was the Lord's anointed. 00:06:48.20\00:06:51.11 Were you not afraid to kill him? 00:06:51.14\00:06:54.48 I had two chances to kill him and I didn't take it." 00:06:54.51\00:06:57.88 Evidently the Amalekite didn't know that 00:06:57.91\00:07:00.32 and evidently the Amalekite did not know 00:07:00.35\00:07:03.92 that David had just come from rescuing his family 00:07:03.95\00:07:07.09 from the Amalekites 00:07:07.12\00:07:09.39 and fighting with the Amalekites, 00:07:09.42\00:07:10.56 so it did not end well for him that day, 00:07:10.59\00:07:13.86 he didn't get the reward he was expecting. 00:07:13.90\00:07:17.10 He had one of David's soldiers kill him 00:07:17.13\00:07:20.74 because he with his own mouth testified, 00:07:20.77\00:07:23.34 "I killed the king." 00:07:23.37\00:07:26.07 And, you know, David, but it's hard for us to imagine 00:07:26.11\00:07:30.38 but David loved Saul. 00:07:30.41\00:07:33.05 You have to remember when David was a boy, 00:07:33.08\00:07:34.25 Saul was the big mighty powerful king. 00:07:34.28\00:07:36.79 He was rescuing them in battle. 00:07:36.82\00:07:38.59 He was winning against the Philistines 00:07:38.62\00:07:40.52 and he was David's father-in-law. 00:07:40.56\00:07:43.99 And so in light of all these things 00:07:44.03\00:07:45.63 and twice David said, "He is the Lord's anointed." 00:07:45.66\00:07:48.00 "And if I ever want people to respect me 00:07:48.03\00:07:50.00 for being the anointed," David thought, 00:07:50.03\00:07:52.30 "I need to respect the Lord's anointed." 00:07:52.33\00:07:55.24 And so this man, he didn't understand. 00:07:55.27\00:07:58.04 So David then commences 00:07:58.07\00:08:01.51 to write and sing a lament, a dirge. 00:08:01.54\00:08:05.75 It's a song that he writes. 00:08:05.78\00:08:07.88 And you can read about this, 00:08:07.92\00:08:11.19 it's called the song of the bow, 00:08:11.22\00:08:13.29 and it's written and says in the book of Jasher, 00:08:13.32\00:08:15.46 another extra Biblical book we don't have, 00:08:15.49\00:08:18.69 "The beauty of Israel is slain," verse 19, 00:08:18.73\00:08:21.53 the main verse of the song, "How the mighty have fallen." 00:08:21.56\00:08:24.87 You probably heard that repeated. 00:08:24.90\00:08:26.13 I don't know why they call it the song of the bow 00:08:26.17\00:08:28.17 because three times he says, "How the mighty have fallen, 00:08:28.20\00:08:31.64 how the mighty have fallen." 00:08:31.67\00:08:33.34 You know, the leaders were Jonathan 00:08:33.38\00:08:35.58 once had gone against several Philistines 00:08:35.61\00:08:37.55 and one he and his armor-bearer killed 20 00:08:37.58\00:08:40.98 and Saul had won many battles, and he was, you know, 00:08:41.02\00:08:43.69 a tall and strong, but when it says, 00:08:43.72\00:08:47.02 "How the mighty have fallen," in this lament, 00:08:47.06\00:08:49.99 you know, there is a whole book in the Bible 00:08:50.03\00:08:51.43 that is called The Lament 00:08:51.46\00:08:53.33 written by Jeremiah after Jerusalem falls, 00:08:53.36\00:08:55.56 it's called the Book of Lamentations, 00:08:55.60\00:08:58.10 a spirit-filled lament. 00:08:58.13\00:09:00.64 And in this lament, it's also talking about 00:09:00.67\00:09:03.30 how the mighty have fallen. 00:09:03.34\00:09:04.37 Here was a man, a king, chosen by God, 00:09:04.41\00:09:08.21 big, tall, strong, spirit-filled, 00:09:08.24\00:09:13.11 and little by little through selfishness 00:09:13.15\00:09:15.52 and pride, he fell. 00:09:15.55\00:09:18.02 So not only did he fall as the king, 00:09:18.05\00:09:20.06 Saul had fallen from God's plan for him 00:09:20.09\00:09:22.82 just as Adam fell in the Garden of Eden, 00:09:22.86\00:09:25.19 how the mighty have fallen. 00:09:25.23\00:09:27.10 And in this song, because of Saul, 00:09:27.13\00:09:30.83 the good fell with him. 00:09:30.87\00:09:32.97 And David then sings about Jonathan 00:09:33.00\00:09:35.57 and how he loved, you read in 2 Samuel 1:26, 00:09:35.60\00:09:39.77 "I'm distressed for you, my brother Jonathan. 00:09:39.81\00:09:43.58 You have been very pleasant to me. 00:09:43.61\00:09:45.45 Your love was to me wonderful, surpassing the love of women." 00:09:45.48\00:09:49.42 And it talks about 00:09:49.45\00:09:50.49 the pure love of friendship here 00:09:50.52\00:09:53.12 that is very rarely spoken about now, 00:09:53.15\00:09:57.03 and then he closes with how the mighty have fallen 00:09:57.06\00:09:59.86 and the weapons of war perished. 00:09:59.89\00:10:02.43 Moving on to chapter 2, now David does something 00:10:02.46\00:10:05.73 that he has not done for a while. 00:10:05.77\00:10:07.60 How did David end up in the land of the Philistines? 00:10:07.64\00:10:09.60 Because he prayed and God said run to the Philistines 00:10:09.64\00:10:11.84 or did David forget to ask God? 00:10:11.87\00:10:14.81 And he ends up spending a year and a half 00:10:14.84\00:10:16.54 in a big lie pretending he is something he is not. 00:10:16.58\00:10:21.85 Now David has come to his senses. 00:10:21.88\00:10:23.45 I think when his family was kidnapped 00:10:23.49\00:10:25.55 by the Amalekites, he did a lot of weeping then. 00:10:25.59\00:10:29.12 David said, "How did I end up here in the land of the enemy? 00:10:29.16\00:10:32.13 I was never told by God to do this." 00:10:32.16\00:10:33.80 God had been leading him all along the way, 00:10:33.83\00:10:36.33 but now he goes on his own. 00:10:36.36\00:10:37.93 It's kind of like Elijah. 00:10:37.97\00:10:39.73 You read the story of Elijah. 00:10:39.77\00:10:40.87 God says to Elijah, go do this, go do that, 00:10:40.90\00:10:43.14 he goes everywhere God says 00:10:43.17\00:10:45.27 and Lord blesses, he takes care of him, 00:10:45.31\00:10:47.94 but then Jezebel sends him a scary message 00:10:47.98\00:10:49.91 and he gets afraid, he runs for 40 days 00:10:49.94\00:10:52.98 and God says, "What are you doing here? 00:10:53.01\00:10:54.22 I didn't tell you to go here." 00:10:54.25\00:10:56.22 And so sometimes even God's people spook 00:10:56.25\00:10:59.59 and they run. 00:10:59.62\00:11:00.69 And David, now he turns back to God 00:11:00.72\00:11:04.06 and he inquires of the Lord. 00:11:04.09\00:11:06.53 I mean, you've been anointed as the king, 00:11:06.56\00:11:09.20 they now have no king, the crown princes, 00:11:09.23\00:11:11.80 the older sons of Saul, Jonathan, Aminadab, Malki Shua, 00:11:11.83\00:11:15.67 they're all dead on the battlefield, 00:11:15.70\00:11:17.77 Israel has been taken over by the Philistines, 00:11:17.81\00:11:20.78 they need a leader, but now David says, 00:11:20.81\00:11:23.41 "Maybe they don't want me. 00:11:23.45\00:11:24.65 I've been hanging out with the Philistines, 00:11:24.68\00:11:25.88 maybe I've been disqualified by my disobedience." 00:11:25.91\00:11:29.28 So he says, "Lord, do you still have a plan for me? 00:11:29.32\00:11:32.05 What do you want me to do? 00:11:32.09\00:11:33.66 Shall I go up to any of the cities of Judah?" 00:11:33.69\00:11:36.76 And God says, "Yes, go up." 00:11:36.79\00:11:38.29 David's very careful now. 00:11:38.33\00:11:39.46 He not only says what shall I do, he says, 00:11:39.49\00:11:41.96 when shall I go and where shall I go? 00:11:42.00\00:11:44.87 He says, "Go to Hebron." 00:11:44.90\00:11:46.90 So David takes his wives and his men 00:11:46.94\00:11:50.61 and they all go up to Hebron. 00:11:50.64\00:11:52.61 Now just a little history about Hebron. 00:11:52.64\00:11:57.88 In Hebron, it's about 25 miles southwest of Jerusalem, 00:11:57.91\00:12:00.98 it's in the land of Judah. 00:12:01.02\00:12:03.05 Before Jerusalem, it really would have been 00:12:03.08\00:12:05.85 the capital of the land of Judah. 00:12:05.89\00:12:08.29 You read several times about Abraham in Mamre. 00:12:08.32\00:12:11.66 Mamre is just a little distance from Hebron, 00:12:11.69\00:12:13.83 it's all the same region. 00:12:13.86\00:12:16.20 The word Hebron means alliance or joining together, 00:12:16.23\00:12:19.83 and it was at Hebron that the people came 00:12:19.87\00:12:21.57 and joined together with him. 00:12:21.60\00:12:25.04 It was actually one of the sons of Levi 00:12:25.07\00:12:26.91 the city is named after. 00:12:26.94\00:12:29.14 And it's been under almost continuous occupation 00:12:29.18\00:12:33.72 for thousands of years. 00:12:33.75\00:12:35.02 Here in Hebron, Abraham built an altar to the Lord. 00:12:35.05\00:12:38.25 It was at Hebron that Lot parted from Abraham 00:12:38.29\00:12:41.12 because they had so much stuff and he went down to Sodom. 00:12:41.16\00:12:43.93 It was at Hebron that God with two angels 00:12:43.96\00:12:47.30 met with Abraham and said, "I'm not going to hide from you 00:12:47.36\00:12:50.33 what I'm about to do Lot and his family." 00:12:50.37\00:12:52.97 And it was there Abraham intercedes for them. 00:12:53.00\00:12:56.54 And in Hebron is where Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob are buried, 00:12:56.57\00:13:01.34 so it's a very significant city. 00:13:01.38\00:13:03.88 Outside of Hebron, there was a cave 00:13:03.91\00:13:05.48 called the Cave of Machpelah, and there Abraham and Sarah, 00:13:05.51\00:13:10.55 Isaac and Rebecca, Jacob and Leah, not Rachel, 00:13:10.59\00:13:14.46 she was buried in Bethlehem, were buried. 00:13:14.49\00:13:17.13 And so the Patriarchs and their wives are there, 00:13:17.16\00:13:18.96 so it's a very significant city, 00:13:18.99\00:13:20.36 David goes there 00:13:20.40\00:13:21.73 and David from the tribe of Judah, 00:13:21.76\00:13:23.83 they had lost confidence in Saul. 00:13:23.87\00:13:28.60 The elders come to him and they anoint him king. 00:13:28.64\00:13:32.17 Now it's been a long time coming, 00:13:32.21\00:13:34.14 but I want you to notice. 00:13:34.18\00:13:35.41 David was anointed king first as a lad. 00:13:35.44\00:13:38.51 He may have been 12, 13 years old 00:13:38.55\00:13:40.48 before he even killed Goliath, 00:13:40.52\00:13:41.85 he was anointed chosen by Samuel, by God. 00:13:41.88\00:13:45.19 Now he is anointed officially, but he is only king of Judah. 00:13:45.22\00:13:50.36 And so he reigns in Hebron 00:13:50.39\00:13:51.93 for about seven-and-a-half years, 00:13:51.96\00:13:54.10 but during that time unfortunately, 00:13:54.13\00:13:56.83 Abner, who was the general for King Saul, 00:13:56.87\00:13:59.60 he is also the uncle of Saul, he decides, you know, 00:13:59.63\00:14:03.30 he doesn't want to lose his position as general, 00:14:03.34\00:14:06.64 and so he takes a young... 00:14:06.68\00:14:08.58 Well, he's not that young, he is 40, 00:14:08.61\00:14:10.05 he takes one of the sons, surviving sons of Saul, 00:14:10.08\00:14:12.55 Ish-bosheth. 00:14:12.58\00:14:14.68 How would you like to have the name Ish-bosheth? 00:14:14.72\00:14:16.89 Anyway, and so, 00:14:16.92\00:14:19.75 but he only reigned for two years 00:14:19.79\00:14:21.92 and it goes on to say there was a constant war now 00:14:21.96\00:14:25.33 between the eleven tribes that followed Saul and Abner 00:14:25.36\00:14:31.23 and only the tribe of Judah. 00:14:31.27\00:14:32.43 Judah was a very powerful big tribe. 00:14:32.47\00:14:34.14 They had really almost the whole southern territory. 00:14:34.17\00:14:38.71 The war went on, and during the war, 00:14:38.74\00:14:41.31 it says here, and this is by the way, 00:14:41.34\00:14:43.91 2 Samuel 3:1, 00:14:43.95\00:14:45.71 "David, there was a long war between the house of Saul 00:14:45.75\00:14:48.42 and the house of David." 00:14:48.45\00:14:49.48 Well, two years is not that long a war. 00:14:49.52\00:14:51.59 There was a war once called the Hundred-Year War, 00:14:51.62\00:14:54.52 but it was constant battle. 00:14:54.56\00:14:56.22 Every time they did business with each other, 00:14:56.26\00:14:58.13 there was a skirmish. 00:14:58.16\00:14:59.36 It started out with 12 men from one side 00:14:59.39\00:15:01.40 and 12 men with other, and they got into a war 00:15:01.43\00:15:03.63 and they all killed each other. 00:15:03.67\00:15:06.13 It was very unusual. 00:15:06.17\00:15:07.70 And then a battle broke out between Joab 00:15:07.74\00:15:09.94 who sort of became the general for David, 00:15:09.97\00:15:12.41 and Joab is the nephew of David, 00:15:12.44\00:15:14.18 and Abner and Ish-bosheth. 00:15:14.21\00:15:16.71 You never hear of Ish-bosheth leading anyone into battle. 00:15:16.75\00:15:20.08 He pretty much stayed home and let Abner fight the wars, 00:15:20.12\00:15:23.89 somewhat of an incompetent king, 00:15:23.92\00:15:26.25 but you read, "David grew stronger and stronger 00:15:26.29\00:15:31.63 and the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker." 00:15:31.66\00:15:35.16 And in one of these battles, you need to know, 00:15:35.20\00:15:37.07 a blood feud develop 00:15:37.10\00:15:38.67 because Joab had two brothers, the general. 00:15:38.70\00:15:42.47 These are three nephews of David. 00:15:42.50\00:15:44.51 David had one sister, 00:15:44.54\00:15:45.64 those seven or eight boys of Jesse. 00:15:45.67\00:15:48.94 I think I went over that with you, 00:15:48.98\00:15:50.05 once it says seven, once it says eight, 00:15:50.08\00:15:52.15 probably one died, they had one sister, Zeruiah. 00:15:52.18\00:15:56.85 She had three boys, Joab, Abishai, and Adonijah. 00:15:56.89\00:16:02.39 Asahel rather, sorry. 00:16:02.42\00:16:05.03 And Asahel was chasing after Ahab in this battle. 00:16:05.06\00:16:10.30 Ahab is in his chariot, and he's chasing after him, 00:16:10.33\00:16:13.64 and he won't go to the right or left, 00:16:13.67\00:16:14.74 he says, "I want to get credit 00:16:14.77\00:16:15.94 for killing the general of Israel." 00:16:15.97\00:16:19.04 And Abner knows who he is and he says, "Look," 00:16:19.07\00:16:21.98 turns to the side, says, "If you want to take a trophy, 00:16:22.01\00:16:24.95 get one of these men and keep their armor." 00:16:24.98\00:16:26.48 He says, "I can't look your brother. 00:16:26.51\00:16:27.82 He is having a conversation 00:16:27.85\00:16:28.88 while he was chasing after him." 00:16:28.92\00:16:29.98 Asahel was as quick as a gazelle. 00:16:30.02\00:16:33.15 And he just runs and runs and he chases 00:16:33.19\00:16:34.92 after the chariot and he wants to kill Abner. 00:16:34.96\00:16:37.16 Abner says, "Don't do it because how could I look 00:16:37.19\00:16:39.16 your brother Joab in the eye if I kill you." 00:16:39.19\00:16:42.13 And he wouldn't listen, 00:16:42.16\00:16:44.03 and Abner who is a skilled soldier, 00:16:44.07\00:16:45.70 you don't get to be general 00:16:45.73\00:16:46.80 unless you're a pretty good fighter. 00:16:46.84\00:16:48.80 He turns back and he stabs Asahel and kills him. 00:16:48.84\00:16:54.68 And a blood feud develops, you need to understand 00:16:54.71\00:16:57.15 because later it comes up in the story. 00:16:57.18\00:17:01.02 Eventually, Ish-bosheth accuses Abner 00:17:01.05\00:17:06.42 of having an affair with one of Saul's concubines. 00:17:06.45\00:17:11.43 Abner evidently was innocent of this. 00:17:11.46\00:17:13.16 He was outraged he would even accuse him of such a thing. 00:17:13.19\00:17:15.43 He said, "How dare you say that?" 00:17:15.46\00:17:17.73 Ish-bosheth realizes that his kingdom is in jeopardy 00:17:17.77\00:17:20.34 and he is thinking Ahab wants to be King. 00:17:20.37\00:17:22.97 Abner, sorry, wants to be king. 00:17:23.00\00:17:25.47 And the way you became king sometimes 00:17:25.51\00:17:28.88 is you took your enemy's wives. 00:17:28.91\00:17:31.98 You remember the first thing that Absolom did? 00:17:32.01\00:17:35.45 When he took Jerusalem, 00:17:35.48\00:17:36.52 he slept with his father's concubines, 00:17:36.55\00:17:39.59 and that basically meant now I'm in control. 00:17:39.62\00:17:42.69 You remember when Solomon killed his brother, 00:17:42.72\00:17:45.56 it's because his brother said he wanted one of David's wives. 00:17:45.59\00:17:49.03 He said, "I know what you're up to." 00:17:49.06\00:17:50.97 Adonijah was trying to take the kingdom. 00:17:51.00\00:17:54.44 And so Abner was really upset 00:17:54.47\00:17:57.47 that he would be accused of this, 00:17:57.51\00:17:59.81 and he said, "How dare you do this?" 00:17:59.84\00:18:00.91 He says, "You didn't realize 00:18:00.94\00:18:01.91 it's in my power to hand the kingdom over to David 00:18:01.94\00:18:05.01 and you're getting weaker and weaker. 00:18:05.05\00:18:06.28 I can see where this is heading. 00:18:06.31\00:18:07.95 You're not a king. 00:18:07.98\00:18:09.48 And any hope for me 00:18:09.52\00:18:10.75 to still have position of general, 00:18:10.79\00:18:12.32 I need to enter into a league with David." 00:18:12.35\00:18:14.22 So Abner goes up to Jerusalem, 00:18:14.26\00:18:15.82 he sends a letter first to David 00:18:15.86\00:18:17.79 and he says, "Tell you what, just talk to me 00:18:17.83\00:18:19.63 and I will make a covenant with you 00:18:19.66\00:18:20.70 and I will hand the tribes of Israel over to Judah 00:18:20.73\00:18:24.47 and you'll be king over everything." 00:18:24.50\00:18:26.40 David said, "Good enough," he said, 00:18:26.43\00:18:27.44 "Except one condition. 00:18:27.47\00:18:29.64 Don't come to me 00:18:29.67\00:18:31.51 until you bring me back my wife, Michal." 00:18:31.54\00:18:35.04 Remember, David had killed 200 Philistines 00:18:35.08\00:18:39.08 to get the daughter of Saul as dowry. 00:18:39.11\00:18:42.35 Well, during the battle, Saul had now given his wife. 00:18:42.38\00:18:45.52 Saul had just declared a divorce. 00:18:45.55\00:18:48.42 David never divorced her. 00:18:48.46\00:18:49.82 He gave Michal to another man, and David says, 00:18:49.86\00:18:54.30 "Look, I want my wife back," 00:18:54.36\00:18:56.33 and a part of the reason David is doing this, 00:18:56.36\00:19:00.97 he knows in order for Israel to come to him, 00:19:01.00\00:19:03.37 they've all been following the house of Saul 00:19:03.41\00:19:04.97 for over 40 years, 42 years now. 00:19:05.01\00:19:08.21 He is kind of showing his right to the throne of Saul 00:19:08.24\00:19:12.58 in that he at least is married to one of Saul's daughters, 00:19:12.61\00:19:17.02 and so later he sort of regrets he does this, 00:19:17.05\00:19:19.82 but he gets Michal back, 00:19:19.85\00:19:23.89 he arranges a meeting with Abner. 00:19:23.93\00:19:25.86 Abner says, "Good enough," 00:19:25.89\00:19:27.66 you know, "You make me general, 00:19:27.73\00:19:28.90 I'm paraphrasing because we got eight chapters. 00:19:30.70\00:19:33.94 And David arranges so that Joab is not in Jerusalem 00:19:33.97\00:19:39.71 when he makes this covenant with Abner. 00:19:39.74\00:19:43.91 Well, Joab gets back from some expedition, 00:19:43.95\00:19:46.95 and they said, "Did you hear? 00:19:46.98\00:19:48.08 Abner was just here, he just left. 00:19:48.12\00:19:49.72 He was talking to David." 00:19:49.75\00:19:51.99 And he said, "Really?" He said, "Send for him." 00:19:52.02\00:19:54.52 And so they sent for Abner and said, 00:19:54.56\00:19:57.49 "David still wants to see you, 00:19:57.53\00:19:58.76 one more thing he forgot to cover." 00:19:58.79\00:20:00.00 Abner turns around, he comes back. 00:20:00.03\00:20:01.90 Joab takes him aside 00:20:01.93\00:20:03.90 and acts like he is going to embrace him 00:20:03.93\00:20:06.60 and stabs him for killing his brother. 00:20:06.63\00:20:09.54 This is a blood feud. 00:20:09.57\00:20:10.87 It was very common back then that once you kill 00:20:10.91\00:20:13.91 a family member, another family member 00:20:13.94\00:20:15.84 was responsible to get even. 00:20:15.88\00:20:19.55 You remember that... 00:20:19.58\00:20:21.62 I'm assuming you've read all this about 00:20:21.65\00:20:22.98 the cities of refuge. 00:20:23.02\00:20:24.99 If you accidentally killed someone, 00:20:25.02\00:20:26.72 you might have one of their kin come after you 00:20:26.76\00:20:28.76 and you would go to a city of refuge, 00:20:28.79\00:20:30.36 you're safe there 00:20:30.39\00:20:32.13 until the death of a high priest 00:20:32.16\00:20:33.26 and then you could go free. 00:20:33.29\00:20:34.83 So Abner is killed by Joab. 00:20:34.86\00:20:38.20 And basically, David says, "I can't do anything about this 00:20:38.23\00:20:42.34 because first of all they're my nephews, 00:20:42.37\00:20:45.04 these are my generals, 00:20:45.07\00:20:46.54 all the mighty men follow Joab." 00:20:46.57\00:20:48.81 And he says, "The sons of Zeruiah 00:20:48.84\00:20:50.61 are too hard for me. 00:20:50.65\00:20:52.48 There's nothing I'm going to be able to do about this." 00:20:52.51\00:20:54.95 But David mourns the death of Abner 00:20:54.98\00:20:57.39 and he wins the hearts of Israel. 00:20:57.42\00:20:59.69 And he writes another lament for Abner, 00:20:59.72\00:21:03.19 writes another song. 00:21:03.22\00:21:04.66 Well, at that point, then the elders of Israel 00:21:04.69\00:21:07.66 come to David and they say, "You're the one," 00:21:07.66\00:21:12.00 and you can read this in 2 Samuel 5: 00:21:12.03\00:21:14.37 All the elders come to David in Hebron 00:21:14.40\00:21:17.21 and they make a covenant with him in Hebron 00:21:17.24\00:21:19.67 and they anointed David king over all of Israel. 00:21:19.71\00:21:23.98 So how many anointing do we have now? 00:21:24.01\00:21:26.72 It's the third one, once as a child, 00:21:26.75\00:21:28.82 once over Hebron, 00:21:28.85\00:21:30.09 and now once over all of Israel. 00:21:30.12\00:21:32.02 Finally, he has waited a long time, 00:21:32.05\00:21:35.16 David is now 30 years old. 00:21:35.19\00:21:38.33 How old was Jesus when he was baptized? 00:21:38.36\00:21:41.13 Thirty years old. 00:21:41.16\00:21:42.20 How old was Joseph 00:21:42.23\00:21:44.83 when he began to rule over all of Egypt? 00:21:44.87\00:21:47.77 Thirty years old. 00:21:47.80\00:21:49.60 How old did you need to be 00:21:49.64\00:21:50.71 before you began to serve as a priest? 00:21:50.74\00:21:53.11 Thirty years old. 00:21:53.14\00:21:54.21 So there is some significance to this. 00:21:54.24\00:21:55.64 This is another way where David and Jesus are similar. 00:21:55.68\00:21:59.11 He finally begins his ministry as king at 30, 00:21:59.15\00:22:03.79 his complete ministry over all of Israel. 00:22:03.82\00:22:07.09 And quickly the kingdom he has welded together, 00:22:07.12\00:22:10.06 now you'll notice during the seven years 00:22:10.09\00:22:11.93 when David is king over Hebron, 00:22:11.96\00:22:13.83 over Judah, the Philistines don't fight with him 00:22:13.86\00:22:16.56 because they thought, "Oh, yeah, David, we know him. 00:22:16.60\00:22:17.87 He is our friend." 00:22:17.90\00:22:18.90 So they gave him the tribes of Judah, 00:22:18.93\00:22:20.84 that's small potatoes. 00:22:20.87\00:22:23.07 But now when David becomes the king of all of Israel, 00:22:23.10\00:22:27.08 they realize, "Wow, now he has taken Saul's place. 00:22:27.11\00:22:30.81 He is going to be a problem." 00:22:30.85\00:22:33.58 But before I get to that, 00:22:33.62\00:22:36.12 I want you to notice in 2 Samuel 5:4, 00:22:36.15\00:22:39.79 "David was 30 years old when he began to reign 00:22:39.82\00:22:42.52 and he reigned 40 years." 00:22:42.56\00:22:44.59 He reigned in Hebron over Judah 7 years and 6 months, 00:22:44.63\00:22:48.90 and in Jerusalem he reigned 33 years 00:22:48.93\00:22:51.37 overall of Israel and Judah. 00:22:51.40\00:22:53.90 Now do you find those numbers other places? 00:22:53.94\00:22:58.11 You've got 33, and 7, and 30, and 40. 00:22:58.14\00:23:04.95 Those are all numbers connected to Jesus. 00:23:06.51\00:23:08.15 Jesus fasted for 40 days and 40 nights, 00:23:08.18\00:23:09.68 Jesus was 33.5 when he died, 00:23:09.72\00:23:13.12 and Christ's ministry was 7 years among the Jews. 00:23:13.15\00:23:16.76 And these are all numbers that can be also linked 00:23:16.79\00:23:19.13 with Jesus and His ministry. 00:23:19.16\00:23:21.26 And the next thing that happened 00:23:21.30\00:23:22.33 is David is finally king. 00:23:22.36\00:23:23.40 He says, "Look, I need a capital." 00:23:23.43\00:23:25.33 Now David grew up in Bethlehem. 00:23:25.37\00:23:28.54 Not too far away was a great fortress, 00:23:28.57\00:23:31.74 but it always bothered David 00:23:31.77\00:23:33.04 that the fortress on this beautiful situation, 00:23:33.07\00:23:35.44 beautiful hill, you know, they say in real estate 00:23:35.48\00:23:37.78 what are the three rules, location, location, location. 00:23:37.81\00:23:42.75 Jerusalem is perfectly located. 00:23:42.78\00:23:46.02 Down one side, you can basically see 00:23:46.05\00:23:48.49 the Mediterranean, down the other side, 00:23:48.52\00:23:50.29 you can see the Dead Sea and the Jordan Valley. 00:23:50.33\00:23:52.66 It's got springs on top of the mountain 00:23:52.69\00:23:54.30 which gives you gravity flow water. 00:23:54.36\00:23:55.86 It's just a great location for a fortress, protection. 00:23:55.90\00:23:59.83 Many years earlier, 00:23:59.87\00:24:01.34 there was a king named Melchizedek 00:24:01.37\00:24:05.31 who was king of Salem, and later they built a fortress 00:24:05.34\00:24:08.91 there better known Jerusalem and then we don't know 00:24:08.94\00:24:12.75 what became of Melchizedek, but the Jebusites, 00:24:12.78\00:24:15.35 one of the Canaanite kingdoms, they built a fortress there. 00:24:15.38\00:24:18.19 And even after Joshua and the tribes had overcome 00:24:18.22\00:24:22.29 all of the other Perizzites and the Gibeonites 00:24:22.32\00:24:28.50 and the other ites that were in the kingdom, 00:24:28.53\00:24:30.10 the termites and all of them. 00:24:30.13\00:24:32.70 They never did overthrow the Jebusites 00:24:32.73\00:24:36.44 because it was such a fortress and David, 00:24:36.47\00:24:40.04 he knew as a young man and as a shepherd 00:24:40.08\00:24:42.54 that there was a secret water shaft 00:24:42.58\00:24:45.25 that led into the city where one person 00:24:45.28\00:24:48.08 could squeeze through 00:24:48.12\00:24:49.45 and get up inside the fortress's tall walls. 00:24:49.48\00:24:53.76 And David said "I want to take the kingdom, 00:24:53.79\00:24:57.69 Jerusalem for the kingdom to be the capital. 00:24:57.73\00:24:59.96 It's going to be my fortress. 00:25:00.06\00:25:01.16 We don't want the Jebusites to have a fortress 00:25:01.20\00:25:03.60 right in the middle of our kingdom." 00:25:03.63\00:25:05.63 You don't want the devil to have a fortress 00:25:05.67\00:25:07.24 in your life and in your heart. 00:25:07.27\00:25:08.94 Don't give him a foothold. 00:25:08.97\00:25:11.14 While the Jebusites made fun of David, 00:25:11.17\00:25:12.64 they said, "Even the blind 00:25:12.67\00:25:14.14 and the lame could repel your forces 00:25:14.18\00:25:16.38 if they try to get in the city," 00:25:16.41\00:25:18.85 and so that became a proverb. 00:25:18.88\00:25:20.25 Later David said, even the blind 00:25:20.28\00:25:22.58 and the lame will not come in to the temple site 00:25:22.62\00:25:27.36 when it was built. 00:25:27.39\00:25:29.02 And so David says, "Whoever can be first 00:25:29.06\00:25:33.06 to get inside the city, 00:25:33.09\00:25:34.36 some of you know the story of the Trojan horse. 00:25:34.40\00:25:37.50 They had five men inside this big wooden gift horse 00:25:37.53\00:25:39.73 and they snuck out and they opened the gates, 00:25:39.77\00:25:41.77 then they let the whole army in." 00:25:41.80\00:25:43.41 If you could get someone on the inside, 00:25:43.44\00:25:46.21 well, David said, "If someone can sneak up 00:25:46.24\00:25:48.38 the water shaft 00:25:48.41\00:25:49.64 and open the gates for our armies at night, 00:25:49.68\00:25:51.71 we'll be able to take the city. 00:25:51.75\00:25:53.95 And Joab did it. 00:25:53.98\00:25:55.35 And he promised whoever does this, 00:25:55.38\00:25:56.38 he will be general. 00:25:56.42\00:25:57.85 While Joab was sort of already general first 00:25:57.89\00:25:59.62 since he said, "I'm going to do it." 00:25:59.65\00:26:00.82 No one argued with him and Joab did it. 00:26:00.86\00:26:02.89 So David let Joab remain general 00:26:02.92\00:26:04.66 and he was the general for David until David's death. 00:26:04.69\00:26:07.76 And he was a good general. 00:26:07.83\00:26:10.00 He didn't do a lot of things right, 00:26:10.03\00:26:11.60 but as far as generals go, Joab, fighting with David, 00:26:11.63\00:26:15.10 never lost a battle. 00:26:15.14\00:26:17.57 And those boys of Jesse were pretty tough 00:26:17.61\00:26:21.28 or that family there. 00:26:21.31\00:26:23.35 So David says, "Whoever climbs up by the way 00:26:23.38\00:26:26.18 the water shaft and defeats the Jebusites," 00:26:26.21\00:26:28.12 by the way, I'm in 2 Samuel 5:8, 00:26:28.15\00:26:31.85 "The lame and the blind who are hated by David's soul, 00:26:31.89\00:26:34.16 he shall be chief and captain. 00:26:34.19\00:26:36.49 Therefore, they say the blind and the lame 00:26:36.52\00:26:38.29 will not come into the house." 00:26:38.33\00:26:40.20 And so David, then he took the city, 00:26:40.23\00:26:42.60 he makes it the capital of the kingdom, 00:26:42.63\00:26:44.60 and you'll find some confusion in the Bible, 00:26:44.63\00:26:46.70 sometimes it will say "The city of David, 00:26:46.74\00:26:48.54 the City of David, the City of David," 00:26:48.57\00:26:50.67 and you think it's Jerusalem. 00:26:50.71\00:26:52.67 Once or twice it's talking about Bethlehem 00:26:52.71\00:26:55.21 where he was born. 00:26:55.24\00:26:56.88 They're both called the City of David, 00:26:56.91\00:26:58.68 but they're not far from each other, 00:26:58.71\00:27:00.35 so don't let that be a stumbling block for you. 00:27:00.38\00:27:03.02 So he sets up Jerusalem as his capital. 00:27:03.05\00:27:05.39 And what does Jerusalem mean? 00:27:05.42\00:27:07.52 When you are Jewish 00:27:07.56\00:27:08.56 and you tell someone Happy Sabbath, 00:27:08.59\00:27:10.56 what do you say? 00:27:10.59\00:27:11.89 Shabbat shalom. Shalom means peace. 00:27:11.93\00:27:15.80 And, you know, we say, hello, goodbye. 00:27:15.83\00:27:19.43 And when we were in New Guinea 00:27:19.47\00:27:22.50 and we are telling people goodnight, 00:27:22.54\00:27:23.97 we heard the conference president say, 00:27:24.01\00:27:25.37 go to sleep, we're driving down the road, 00:27:25.41\00:27:28.74 he's calling out the window, go to sleep, go to sleep. 00:27:28.78\00:27:31.11 With him, it's like a parent telling all his kids 00:27:31.15\00:27:32.91 go to sleep he said 00:27:32.95\00:27:33.98 "No, that is Pisin for good evening." 00:27:34.02\00:27:38.05 But we've got hello, goodbye. 00:27:38.09\00:27:40.16 In Hawaii and you say aloha, hello, or goodbye. 00:27:40.19\00:27:43.86 In Hebrew, shalom could be a greeting, 00:27:43.89\00:27:47.03 shalom could be parting. 00:27:47.10\00:27:48.80 It basically means peace. 00:27:48.83\00:27:50.37 Jeru means "city of" 00:27:50.40\00:27:52.57 and so Jeru-shalom means City of Peace. 00:27:52.60\00:27:56.04 And it becomes the capital 00:27:56.07\00:27:57.77 which is later a symbol for Jesus 00:27:57.81\00:28:00.41 who will be the king of the New Jerusalem 00:28:00.44\00:28:03.81 that you see in the end of the Bible. 00:28:03.85\00:28:05.11 So all of this is connected. 00:28:05.15\00:28:08.28 We've a new son of David 00:28:08.32\00:28:10.02 that will be the king of the New Jerusalem. 00:28:10.05\00:28:13.15 And so he subdues all the nations around him. 00:28:13.19\00:28:16.76 When he gets settled in the kingdom, 00:28:16.79\00:28:19.06 it tells us that Hiram, 00:28:19.09\00:28:20.40 the king of Tyre sends messengers. 00:28:20.43\00:28:22.10 Tyre was like the capital city for the Phoenicians 00:28:22.13\00:28:27.00 and is a very wealthy city through Biblical history. 00:28:27.04\00:28:30.74 David enters into a league with them. 00:28:30.77\00:28:32.64 The king of Tyre does not like the Philistines either. 00:28:32.67\00:28:35.94 And so they enter into a league and he says, 00:28:35.98\00:28:38.45 "Look I'm going to send you materials 00:28:38.48\00:28:40.68 because Tyre is at the foot of the mountains of Lebanon, 00:28:40.72\00:28:43.62 they've got all these great cedar trees 00:28:43.65\00:28:45.19 and building material up there. 00:28:45.22\00:28:47.19 Jerusalem, all they got is stones 00:28:47.22\00:28:50.19 and they wanted some lumber and timber to build a palace, 00:28:50.23\00:28:52.73 and so now David has got a palace, 00:28:52.76\00:28:55.20 he has got a capital, he builds it. 00:28:55.23\00:28:57.33 You can read there where it says that 00:28:57.37\00:28:58.63 he built the city around... 00:28:58.67\00:29:02.80 It says from the Millo, and that means the ditch, 00:29:02.84\00:29:05.67 there was this outer ditch, and they built up the city, 00:29:05.71\00:29:07.98 makes a strong capital there. 00:29:08.01\00:29:10.08 And then you read in verse 12, 00:29:10.11\00:29:11.31 "David knew the Lord had established him 00:29:11.35\00:29:14.85 as king over Israel 00:29:14.88\00:29:16.72 and he exalted his kingdom 00:29:16.75\00:29:18.62 for the sake of his people of Israel." 00:29:18.65\00:29:20.12 He knew that he had done it for the sake of his people. 00:29:20.16\00:29:23.53 Well now, when the Philistines heard that 00:29:23.56\00:29:25.66 David had settled in the kingdom, 00:29:25.69\00:29:27.86 they go to war. 00:29:27.86\00:29:29.73 And now David has a series of victories 00:29:29.76\00:29:31.70 subduing the nations around him. 00:29:31.73\00:29:34.00 2 Samuel 5:17, "When the Philistines heard 00:29:34.04\00:29:37.71 that they had anointed king over Israel, 00:29:37.74\00:29:39.97 all the Philistines went up to search for David. 00:29:40.01\00:29:44.08 And David heard it 00:29:44.11\00:29:45.48 and he went down to the stronghold. 00:29:45.51\00:29:48.02 So David went to Baal-perazim and David defeated them there." 00:29:48.05\00:29:52.79 And that's the first battle, 00:29:52.82\00:29:53.89 and this is all of the Philistines, 00:29:53.92\00:29:55.06 it's not a skirmish, it's a major battle. 00:29:55.09\00:29:57.63 "Then the Philistines went up once again 00:29:57.66\00:29:59.43 and deployed themselves in the Valley of Rephaim." 00:29:59.46\00:30:02.33 And you read in 2 Samuel 5:25, 00:30:02.36\00:30:06.43 "And David so did as the Lord commanded him. 00:30:06.47\00:30:09.14 He drove back the Philistines from Geba as far as Gezer." 00:30:09.17\00:30:12.61 Now in both these battles, you'll find that 00:30:12.64\00:30:15.28 David is again saying, 00:30:15.31\00:30:16.61 "Lord, what do you want me to do? 00:30:16.64\00:30:18.15 What do you want me to do? 00:30:18.18\00:30:19.41 How do you order the battle?" He is enquiring of the priests. 00:30:19.45\00:30:23.28 And so he's spending a lot of time 00:30:23.32\00:30:25.42 depending on the Lord. 00:30:25.45\00:30:26.55 So principal enemies defeated the Philistines. 00:30:26.59\00:30:30.63 They retake the cities, Israel retakes the cities 00:30:30.66\00:30:33.56 that they lost in the battle with Saul. 00:30:33.60\00:30:37.07 And eight years have gone by at this point. 00:30:37.10\00:30:41.24 He is becoming very prosperous, they're able to start taxing 00:30:41.27\00:30:44.84 instead of them paying taxes or tribute to the Philistines. 00:30:44.87\00:30:48.68 The Philistines now are paying tribute to them. 00:30:48.71\00:30:52.05 The Philistines had iron, 00:30:52.08\00:30:53.68 David is getting the iron works of the Philistines, 00:30:53.72\00:30:55.88 he's making good armaments and metal swords. 00:30:55.92\00:30:59.55 Before all they had were bronze swords. 00:30:59.59\00:31:01.86 You can read about that here. 00:31:01.89\00:31:04.03 Now after he's becoming settled, 00:31:04.06\00:31:05.33 where does David's heart go next? 00:31:05.36\00:31:08.10 He's thinking, "Here I am, I'm in a palace, 00:31:08.13\00:31:11.50 I'm in the capital city, I'm king. 00:31:11.53\00:31:13.50 Things are going great. 00:31:13.54\00:31:15.84 And the ark of God 00:31:15.87\00:31:17.61 and the temple of God is tattered." 00:31:17.64\00:31:20.11 They have been patching the tabernacle 00:31:20.14\00:31:22.31 that Moses built in the wilderness, 00:31:22.34\00:31:24.75 several hundred years have gone 00:31:24.78\00:31:25.91 by all through the time of the judges, 00:31:25.95\00:31:27.62 the ark of God, the golden candlestick, 00:31:27.65\00:31:31.15 the golden table, they altar of incense, 00:31:31.19\00:31:33.42 all of these sacred things, they're going to a tent. 00:31:33.46\00:31:37.06 He said, "Look, we are a significant kingdom now. 00:31:37.09\00:31:38.83 All these other kingdoms have temples for their gods, 00:31:38.86\00:31:41.30 we got a tent for our God. 00:31:41.33\00:31:43.16 We can do better than this." 00:31:43.20\00:31:44.83 And so his passion is to bring the ark to Jerusalem. 00:31:44.87\00:31:49.10 But David in his haste, 00:31:49.14\00:31:52.21 he doesn't consult the scriptures. 00:31:52.24\00:31:54.21 The priests don't consult the scriptures. 00:31:54.24\00:31:57.28 The last time the ark moved, how many of you remember 00:31:57.31\00:32:01.55 when during the time of Samuel, 00:32:01.58\00:32:05.02 the ark was captured 00:32:05.05\00:32:07.06 and a bunch of plagues come on the Philistines. 00:32:07.09\00:32:09.99 And finally, the Philistines, "Let's get rid of this thing. 00:32:10.03\00:32:13.56 It's plaguing us." 00:32:13.60\00:32:15.20 So they take the ark and they put it on a cart 00:32:15.23\00:32:18.90 with a couple of oxen, and they say, 00:32:18.93\00:32:20.67 "If this is God's doing, the oxen will take the cart 00:32:20.70\00:32:23.34 by themselves unattended and bring it to Israel." 00:32:23.37\00:32:27.14 So the last time the ark is moved, 00:32:27.18\00:32:28.94 it's on the back of an ox cart. 00:32:28.98\00:32:31.01 That's because the Philistines don't know any better. 00:32:31.05\00:32:34.48 And so God doesn't do anything. 00:32:34.52\00:32:37.19 And during that time, some people actually, 00:32:37.22\00:32:39.75 of Israel, they peek into the ark 00:32:39.79\00:32:42.79 and all these terrible things happen. 00:32:42.82\00:32:45.96 So David doesn't realize it's a problem 00:32:45.99\00:32:48.03 and he says, "Look, let's bring the ark to Jerusalem." 00:32:48.06\00:32:49.86 And he has a big celebration, he brings out the band, 00:32:49.90\00:32:52.20 they put the ark on a cart. 00:32:52.23\00:32:55.14 And they're bringing it up towards Jerusalem. 00:32:55.17\00:32:56.81 And when they come, this is 2 Samuel 6:6. 00:32:56.84\00:33:01.78 "When they came to Nachon's threshing floor, Uzzah," 00:33:01.81\00:33:04.71 one of the priests, 00:33:04.75\00:33:06.11 "Puts out his hand to the ark of God 00:33:06.15\00:33:09.12 and took hold of it for the oxen stumbled." 00:33:09.15\00:33:12.25 He said, "Well, it started to shake on the cart. 00:33:12.29\00:33:14.02 It's rough ground." 00:33:14.06\00:33:15.62 And the anger of the Lord was aroused against Uzzah 00:33:15.66\00:33:18.36 and God struck him there for his error 00:33:18.39\00:33:20.43 and he died by the ark of God. 00:33:20.46\00:33:24.07 And David became angry 00:33:24.10\00:33:25.43 because of the Lord's outbreak against Uzzah. 00:33:25.47\00:33:27.60 And he called the name of the place 00:33:27.64\00:33:29.07 Perez Uzzah to this day. 00:33:29.10\00:33:31.37 And David was afraid of the Lord that day 00:33:31.41\00:33:33.24 and he said, 'How can the ark of the Lord come to me?'" 00:33:33.27\00:33:35.94 Now David's... 00:33:35.98\00:33:38.78 You ever been mad at God? 00:33:38.81\00:33:40.08 Sometimes people go through terrible tragedies, 00:33:43.82\00:33:45.59 they're angry at God. 00:33:45.62\00:33:46.65 Have you ever met anybody angry at God? 00:33:46.69\00:33:50.29 Maybe you won't admit it, 00:33:50.33\00:33:51.39 this says your David was angry at God. 00:33:51.43\00:33:52.99 He says, "Dear Lord, I thought I was doing this for you. 00:33:53.03\00:33:55.16 I'm bringing the ark up to Jerusalem, 00:33:55.20\00:33:56.60 it'll be the center of the capital 00:33:56.63\00:33:58.43 and praising the Lord, we had the priests." 00:33:58.47\00:34:02.54 And then later he feared the Lord. 00:34:02.57\00:34:04.87 Well, finally he realized this did not happen 00:34:04.91\00:34:07.84 because God didn't love the nation, 00:34:07.88\00:34:10.51 they had disobeyed and there was a consequence. 00:34:10.55\00:34:13.01 Nobody was supposed to touch the ark. 00:34:13.05\00:34:15.48 Read in the book Numbers 4:15, 00:34:15.52\00:34:18.32 "And when Aaron and his sons 00:34:18.35\00:34:19.69 had finished covering the sanctuary 00:34:19.72\00:34:21.56 and all the furnishings of the sanctuary," 00:34:21.59\00:34:23.29 whenever they transported things, 00:34:23.32\00:34:24.36 they cover it. 00:34:24.39\00:34:26.16 "When the camp is set to go, then the sons of Kohath 00:34:26.19\00:34:28.70 shall come to carry them, 00:34:28.73\00:34:30.50 but they shall not touch any holy thing, lest they die." 00:34:30.53\00:34:35.34 Do not touch it. 00:34:35.37\00:34:36.37 This is why they had poles going through the ark 00:34:36.40\00:34:39.31 to bear it. 00:34:39.34\00:34:41.24 Little trivial question, how many priests 00:34:41.28\00:34:44.65 were supposed to carry the ark? 00:34:44.68\00:34:46.72 We don't know. 00:34:49.38\00:34:51.19 Sometimes you're gonna see artists 00:34:51.22\00:34:52.39 that are painting one priest on the four corners 00:34:52.42\00:34:55.49 each holding the pole, 00:34:55.52\00:34:57.59 sometimes you'll see where they had three, 00:34:57.63\00:34:59.96 there's twelve priests meaning three on each pole, 00:35:00.06\00:35:04.47 four times three, right? 00:35:04.50\00:35:07.34 I think it may have been eight, 00:35:07.37\00:35:09.44 and I'll tell you why in just a minute, 00:35:09.47\00:35:10.94 but we're not exactly sure. 00:35:10.97\00:35:12.91 The ark was heavy. 00:35:12.94\00:35:14.24 If you ever see a picture where there's four men 00:35:14.28\00:35:16.08 carrying the ark, 00:35:16.11\00:35:17.21 you won't want to do that very long 00:35:17.25\00:35:19.21 and you remember one time you have four priests 00:35:19.25\00:35:20.92 that we're standing in the Jordan River 00:35:20.95\00:35:22.25 as all the people several million crossed over 00:35:22.28\00:35:25.95 as if that was gold, it was like a boat anchor. 00:35:25.99\00:35:28.69 And so I didn't mean that disrespectfully, 00:35:28.72\00:35:32.76 I meant it was heavy. 00:35:32.79\00:35:35.06 So they weren't supposed to touch it. 00:35:35.10\00:35:36.77 Finally, David has the priest look, 00:35:36.80\00:35:39.60 he's wondering what's going on 00:35:39.63\00:35:40.67 because they take the ark, when Uzzah dies, 00:35:40.70\00:35:42.34 they don't want to take it any further 00:35:42.37\00:35:43.61 and the closest person is a guy named Obed-Edom. 00:35:43.64\00:35:46.88 And they said, "We're leaving it here." 00:35:46.91\00:35:50.15 Well, for three months, the ark is at the house of Obed-Edom 00:35:50.18\00:35:52.81 and it says, "God blesses everything that he has." 00:35:52.85\00:35:56.42 His Servants are blessed, his produce is blessed, 00:35:56.45\00:35:58.15 his house is blessed, his family is blessed, 00:35:58.19\00:35:59.85 all these blessings come on Obed-Edom 00:35:59.89\00:36:02.02 because the ark is there, he's probably terrified. 00:36:02.06\00:36:04.39 The last guy to touch this thing died 00:36:04.43\00:36:05.73 and now you've got the ark with me, 00:36:05.76\00:36:06.90 what's gonna happen? 00:36:06.93\00:36:08.70 Well, God blesses them. 00:36:08.73\00:36:10.13 So Obed-Edom remembered when, 1 Samuel 6:19, 00:36:10.17\00:36:14.00 it says, "The Lord struck the men of Beth Shemesh 00:36:14.04\00:36:16.57 because they looked in the ark. 00:36:16.60\00:36:18.11 He struck fifty thousand and seventy men of the people, 00:36:18.14\00:36:22.38 and the people lamented 00:36:22.41\00:36:23.51 because the Lord had struck the people 00:36:23.55\00:36:24.81 with a great slaughter." 00:36:24.85\00:36:25.95 Because the people in this town 00:36:25.98\00:36:27.22 dared to open the ark and look inside. 00:36:27.25\00:36:30.25 And so now the ark is left 00:36:30.29\00:36:31.72 at this guy's house and he's afraid. 00:36:31.75\00:36:33.05 God says, "Don't be afraid. 00:36:33.09\00:36:34.69 If you don't touch it, everything's okay," 00:36:34.72\00:36:35.92 and he blesses him. 00:36:35.96\00:36:37.49 David's thinking, "I want to be blessed. 00:36:37.53\00:36:39.39 What's happening?" 00:36:39.43\00:36:40.66 And the priest do a little Bible study 00:36:40.70\00:36:42.03 and they say, this is the most important national treasure, 00:36:42.06\00:36:47.84 you are not supposed to touch it, no one is... 00:36:47.87\00:36:49.64 We don't every want anyone accused of altering 00:36:49.67\00:36:52.61 the Ten Commandments. 00:36:52.64\00:36:54.51 What's the most important document for American citizens? 00:36:54.54\00:36:58.95 The US Constitution of the United States. 00:36:58.98\00:37:01.75 Any of you been to see that? 00:37:01.78\00:37:03.25 It's at the Rotunda of the National Archives. 00:37:03.28\00:37:06.25 There is a picture on the screen. 00:37:06.29\00:37:08.72 It is an alarm cased special 00:37:08.76\00:37:11.99 vacuum temperature-controlled environment 00:37:12.03\00:37:15.70 that is highly guarded because why? 00:37:15.73\00:37:20.20 It's got the foundational documents, 00:37:20.24\00:37:22.17 it's to be protected, not only do we not want 00:37:22.20\00:37:24.14 anyone changing it, 00:37:24.17\00:37:25.94 there's something sacred about it. 00:37:25.97\00:37:28.58 Well, the ark was written by the finger of God, 00:37:28.61\00:37:31.21 no man was to touch that 00:37:31.25\00:37:33.31 once it was placed by Moses in the ark. 00:37:33.35\00:37:35.92 So David finally reads. 00:37:35.95\00:37:38.42 And if you look, he now moves the ark, 00:37:38.45\00:37:41.02 you might say this is ark moving 2.0. 00:37:41.06\00:37:44.39 He wants, once again, to move the ark 00:37:44.43\00:37:46.03 and get it up to Jerusalem. 00:37:46.06\00:37:47.66 So I'm going now to 1 Chronicles, 00:37:47.73\00:37:49.63 you realize that Chronicles and Samuel 00:37:49.66\00:37:52.37 has a lot of overlap. 00:37:52.40\00:37:54.17 1 Chronicles 15:11, "And David called for Zadok 00:37:54.20\00:37:58.17 and Abiathar the priests," that's two, 00:37:58.21\00:38:00.78 "And for the Levites," 00:38:00.81\00:38:02.21 and this is from the tribe of Kohath I think, 00:38:02.24\00:38:04.85 "Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel, and Amminadab." 00:38:04.88\00:38:11.02 So that adds up to eight. 00:38:11.05\00:38:12.99 That's why I thought there might be eight. 00:38:13.02\00:38:14.76 He said, "You are heads of the fathers' 00:38:14.79\00:38:16.99 houses of the Levites. 00:38:17.03\00:38:18.43 Sanctify yourselves, you and your brethren, 00:38:18.46\00:38:20.93 that you may bring up the ark of the Lord God of Israel 00:38:20.96\00:38:24.00 to the place that I have prepared for it. 00:38:24.03\00:38:26.40 For because you did not do it the first time 00:38:26.43\00:38:29.74 the way the Lord prescribed, 00:38:29.77\00:38:32.27 the Lord our God broke out against us," 00:38:32.31\00:38:34.34 that means Perez, "because we did not consult Him 00:38:34.38\00:38:37.71 about the proper order." 00:38:37.75\00:38:39.51 Now in the service in the worship of God, 00:38:39.55\00:38:42.02 does God tell us in His word how things should be done? 00:38:42.05\00:38:45.72 Is he particular? 00:38:45.75\00:38:48.76 Does anyone want to end up like Uzzah? 00:38:48.79\00:38:52.23 Some people think, "Oh, you know, it doesn't matter 00:38:52.26\00:38:54.20 how you do it as long as your heart's right." 00:38:54.23\00:38:56.67 Well, Uzzah's heart might have been right 00:38:56.70\00:38:58.00 when he reached up to study the ark, 00:38:58.03\00:39:00.34 but God said don't touch it or you'll die. 00:39:00.37\00:39:03.37 And they weren't doing what God had commanded. 00:39:03.41\00:39:05.77 And it took someone dying before they finally said, 00:39:05.81\00:39:08.08 let's read and find out again 00:39:08.11\00:39:09.91 we've forgotten what God's Word says. 00:39:09.94\00:39:13.18 And David said, this is why it happened, 00:39:13.21\00:39:14.85 he broke out against us 00:39:14.88\00:39:16.05 because we didn't do it the way God said. 00:39:16.08\00:39:18.52 You won't read that in Samuel but it explains in 1 Chronicles 00:39:18.55\00:39:21.62 what David said, he finally recognized it. 00:39:21.66\00:39:24.09 So now when he brings the ark up, 00:39:24.13\00:39:26.93 he's not holding back. 00:39:26.96\00:39:28.13 He says, "God's gonna bless, we're doing it the way He said, 00:39:28.16\00:39:31.50 and there's a great celebration." 00:39:31.53\00:39:33.44 David wanted all the glory to go to God, 00:39:33.47\00:39:36.44 he takes off his royal vestments 00:39:36.47\00:39:39.01 and he puts on a simple linen ephod. 00:39:39.04\00:39:41.24 He doesn't want the attention to go to Him. 00:39:41.28\00:39:43.48 He wants the attention to go to God. 00:39:43.51\00:39:45.71 And so there is this parade, there's music, 00:39:45.75\00:39:47.75 they're playing instruments that David has made, 00:39:47.78\00:39:49.95 and this great procession is bringing it up 00:39:49.98\00:39:52.15 from Obed-Edom to Jerusalem 00:39:52.19\00:39:54.56 to a place that God had prepared, 00:39:54.59\00:39:56.59 there was just a big... 00:39:56.62\00:39:58.89 Jerusalem is a fairly new capital. 00:39:58.93\00:40:01.16 He's expanded the city, there's some blank area, 00:40:01.20\00:40:03.93 they set up the ark under a tent in Jerusalem now. 00:40:03.97\00:40:07.97 And David's lifelong dream is to build a temple. 00:40:08.00\00:40:11.67 We'll get to that in another chapter. 00:40:11.71\00:40:13.98 And so he's so happy, he's brought the ark there, 00:40:14.01\00:40:15.91 the ark is with him, God's presence is with him. 00:40:15.94\00:40:17.88 David loved the Lord. 00:40:17.91\00:40:19.21 And just the idea that he could look at it 00:40:19.25\00:40:20.42 and say, "There's the presence of God." 00:40:20.45\00:40:22.68 That brought him so much joy. 00:40:22.72\00:40:24.92 So finally, and this is our last segment 00:40:24.95\00:40:28.42 we're gonna cover. 00:40:28.46\00:40:30.13 And this was also our opening, our scripture reading. 00:40:30.16\00:40:34.20 Now the scripture reading came from Chronicles, 00:40:34.23\00:40:36.73 now we're reading it in 2 Samuel. 00:40:36.77\00:40:40.67 David is sitting in his house, and he's looking at 00:40:40.70\00:40:44.41 the ark of God out there, and he's thinking about God 00:40:44.44\00:40:47.31 and building a temple to God. 00:40:47.34\00:40:49.18 And the Prophet Nathan is sent to him. 00:40:49.21\00:40:51.85 And then Prophet Nathan goes to him 00:40:51.88\00:40:54.25 and he speaks to him and a message comes from God. 00:40:54.28\00:40:57.35 He says, "Now therefore say to my servant David, 00:40:57.39\00:40:59.79 thus says the Lord of Hosts." 00:40:59.82\00:41:01.32 This is called the Davidic covenant. 00:41:01.36\00:41:04.36 The Davidic covenant is one of the most important 00:41:04.39\00:41:07.50 covenants in the Bible 00:41:07.56\00:41:08.96 because it explains the line of the Messiah. 00:41:09.00\00:41:12.60 "Say unto David my servant, thus says the Lord of Hosts, 00:41:12.63\00:41:15.60 I took you from the sheepfold, from following the sheep, 00:41:15.64\00:41:19.51 to be ruler over My people over Israel. 00:41:19.54\00:41:22.41 And I have been with you wherever you have gone." 00:41:22.44\00:41:26.58 Now did Jesus say to us I am with you always?" 00:41:26.61\00:41:29.92 Isn't that encouraging that what He said to David 00:41:29.95\00:41:31.75 He says to us. 00:41:31.79\00:41:33.29 "I've been with you wherever you have gone 00:41:33.32\00:41:34.82 and I've cut off all your enemies from before you," 00:41:34.86\00:41:37.23 and God will do that for us, 00:41:37.26\00:41:39.46 "And I've made you a great name." 00:41:39.49\00:41:41.50 Does Jesus give us a new name? 00:41:41.53\00:41:44.53 "Like the name of the great men who are on the earth." 00:41:44.57\00:41:48.20 And you can read, go into verse 12, 00:41:48.24\00:41:52.71 "When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, 00:41:52.74\00:41:57.01 I will set up your seed after you 00:41:57.05\00:41:58.91 who will come from your body 00:41:58.95\00:42:01.02 and I will establish his kingdom. 00:42:01.05\00:42:03.35 He will build me a house for my name, 00:42:03.39\00:42:05.99 and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 00:42:06.02\00:42:10.53 I will be His Father, and he will be My son. 00:42:10.56\00:42:13.46 If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him 00:42:13.50\00:42:15.90 with the rod of men 00:42:15.93\00:42:17.40 and with the blows of the sons of men." 00:42:17.43\00:42:20.07 Now before I go on, before I read any further here, 00:42:20.10\00:42:25.07 I just want to pause. 00:42:25.11\00:42:26.68 Who is this prophecy talking about? 00:42:26.71\00:42:29.48 He says, of your sons that come from you. 00:42:29.51\00:42:33.05 It says, I will establish his kingdom, 00:42:33.08\00:42:35.42 he will build me a house for my name 00:42:35.45\00:42:37.25 and I will establish his throne of His kingdom forever. 00:42:37.29\00:42:43.43 Solomon, Jesus, both? 00:42:43.46\00:42:46.23 This is what you would call a dual prophecy in the Bible. 00:42:46.26\00:42:49.43 How do we know it's talking about Jesus? 00:42:49.46\00:42:51.63 Does Jesus say, "Destroy this temple 00:42:51.67\00:42:54.87 that is made with hands and in three days 00:42:54.90\00:42:56.67 I will make one without hands?" 00:42:56.71\00:42:59.21 And they said, "Oh, it took 46 years 00:42:59.24\00:43:00.74 to build this temple." 00:43:00.78\00:43:02.11 But he wasn't talking about the temple 00:43:02.14\00:43:03.65 that was right there. 00:43:03.68\00:43:04.71 When He made that prophecy, he spoke of His body. 00:43:04.75\00:43:08.12 Christ built a house. He built a temple. 00:43:08.15\00:43:12.49 The Bible says, "Don't you know that you are the temple of God. 00:43:12.52\00:43:15.49 The church is a temple of God." 00:43:15.52\00:43:17.86 The Bible says, "The evil one, the wicked one 00:43:17.89\00:43:19.89 sits in the temple of God showing himself he is God." 00:43:19.93\00:43:22.76 That's talking about the Antichrist 00:43:22.80\00:43:24.07 in the position of God. 00:43:24.10\00:43:25.77 And so first and foremost, this is a prophecy about Jesus, 00:43:25.80\00:43:29.60 but did Solomon, the son of David, 00:43:29.64\00:43:31.44 build the house? 00:43:31.47\00:43:32.61 Was he a great king? 00:43:32.64\00:43:34.48 And it even compares Jesus to Solomon in many ways. 00:43:34.51\00:43:37.31 He was a great wise wealthy king 00:43:37.35\00:43:39.91 with great glory and splendor. 00:43:39.95\00:43:41.32 All types of Christ who is the son of David. 00:43:41.35\00:43:44.75 But then it goes on and says, 00:43:44.79\00:43:45.79 "And if he sins, if he commits iniquity, 00:43:45.82\00:43:49.09 I will chasten him with the rod of men, 00:43:49.12\00:43:51.09 with the blows of the sons of men." 00:43:51.13\00:43:53.63 Was Solomon ever beaten with blows or rods? 00:43:53.66\00:43:57.73 Did Solomon sin? 00:43:57.77\00:43:59.80 But was Jesus the Son of David beaten 00:43:59.83\00:44:02.10 because of our sins. 00:44:02.14\00:44:04.81 And so this again is an allusion 00:44:04.84\00:44:06.71 to both Solomon and David. 00:44:06.74\00:44:10.85 But my mercy will not depart from him 00:44:10.88\00:44:13.42 as I took it from Saul who I removed from before you. 00:44:13.45\00:44:16.99 Is it possible to grieve away the Spirit of God 00:44:17.02\00:44:19.02 and have his mercy removed? 00:44:19.05\00:44:21.22 He says, it was from Saul, it will not be from your house. 00:44:21.26\00:44:25.23 Now were there are several sons of David 00:44:25.26\00:44:27.00 that were good kings? 00:44:27.03\00:44:29.70 Hezekiah? Uzzah? 00:44:29.73\00:44:33.03 There were some that were good kings. 00:44:33.07\00:44:34.20 Solomon, most of the time. 00:44:34.24\00:44:36.14 Were there some sons of David that were bad kings? 00:44:36.17\00:44:39.37 You know, were they chastened? 00:44:39.41\00:44:41.58 It says I'll chasten them with the sons of men. 00:44:41.61\00:44:44.05 God allowed different armies to come in and punish them. 00:44:44.08\00:44:46.68 Grandson of David Rehoboam, Egyptians came in 00:44:46.72\00:44:50.55 and just defeated them and put them under tribute. 00:44:50.59\00:44:54.46 But he said, "I'll not take my mercy away." 00:44:54.49\00:44:56.99 In other words, God preserved the line of David, 00:44:57.03\00:45:00.20 the devil tried to destroy the line of David. 00:45:00.23\00:45:02.66 You remember perhaps reading in the Bible 00:45:02.70\00:45:04.80 where this wicked queen Athaliah, 00:45:04.83\00:45:07.77 when her son was dead, he was Joram, 00:45:07.80\00:45:11.71 was not a good king, but he was a relative of David. 00:45:11.74\00:45:14.94 Athaliah, pagan queen, 00:45:14.98\00:45:16.58 she killed all of her grandchildren trying to... 00:45:16.61\00:45:20.18 The devil was trying to wipeout the line of David 00:45:20.22\00:45:22.35 but one escaped. 00:45:22.38\00:45:23.42 Why did that one boy Joash escape? 00:45:23.45\00:45:26.29 Because God had made a promise that the Messiah 00:45:26.32\00:45:28.66 would come through the line of David. 00:45:28.69\00:45:30.69 How does the New Testament begin? 00:45:30.73\00:45:33.66 And chapter 3 of Luke also, it says, 00:45:33.70\00:45:36.56 the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David. 00:45:36.60\00:45:41.50 And it begins to trace Christ back from David 00:45:41.54\00:45:44.47 because David was the great king 00:45:44.51\00:45:46.84 who was a type of Jesus the king of kings. 00:45:46.88\00:45:50.31 Let's face it. 00:45:50.35\00:45:51.55 It's not always easy to understand everything 00:45:51.58\00:45:53.75 you read in the Bible. 00:45:53.78\00:45:55.15 With over 700,000 words contained in 66 books, 00:45:55.18\00:45:58.89 the Bible can generate a lot of questions. 00:45:58.92\00:46:01.66 To get Biblical straightforward answers, 00:46:01.69\00:46:03.96 call into Bible Answers Live, 00:46:03.99\00:46:05.83 a live nationwide call-in radio program 00:46:05.86\00:46:08.60 where you can talk to Pastor Doug Batchelor 00:46:08.63\00:46:10.80 and ask him your most difficult Bible questions. 00:46:10.83\00:46:13.37 For times and stations in your area, 00:46:13.40\00:46:15.50 or to listen to answers online, visit BAL.AmazingFacts.org. 00:46:15.54\00:46:21.91 You've probably heard the expression before, 00:46:31.05\00:46:32.92 if you don't like the weather in Texas, 00:46:32.95\00:46:34.99 just wait, it'll change. 00:46:35.02\00:46:36.93 And you've also heard everything is bigger in Texas, 00:46:36.96\00:46:39.49 the ranches, the belt buckles, the cowboy hats, 00:46:39.53\00:46:43.26 but the most famous slogan about Texas 00:46:43.30\00:46:45.87 is "Remember the Alamo." 00:46:45.90\00:46:49.40 The violent battles and bravery of iconic heroes 00:46:51.44\00:46:54.24 have been the stuff of legends 00:46:54.28\00:46:55.58 throughout which entire cultures 00:46:55.61\00:46:57.48 often draw on their identity and pride 00:46:57.51\00:46:59.58 even long after centuries have passed. 00:46:59.61\00:47:01.85 And in Texas, the story of the Alamo 00:47:01.88\00:47:04.12 has been a rallying cry of Texas' independence 00:47:04.15\00:47:06.72 for 200 years. 00:47:06.76\00:47:08.76 One reason that Texans love to brag 00:47:08.79\00:47:10.59 that everything is bigger in Texas 00:47:10.63\00:47:12.59 is of course because Texas is the largest 00:47:12.63\00:47:14.93 of the lower 48 US states. 00:47:14.93\00:47:17.40 It's hard to believe that this massive state 00:47:17.43\00:47:19.87 got its beginning in a very small Christian mission 00:47:19.90\00:47:23.17 during the Battle of the Alamo. 00:47:23.20\00:47:25.57 Every year, this famous mission museum 00:47:25.61\00:47:27.84 receives over 2.5 million visitors 00:47:27.88\00:47:30.51 from all parts of the planet that are eager 00:47:30.55\00:47:32.58 to get a good look at this legendary sight. 00:47:32.61\00:47:35.72 The Alamo played a critical role 00:47:35.75\00:47:37.62 in the Texas Revolution. 00:47:37.65\00:47:39.52 In December, 1835, Texans and Tejano volunteers 00:47:39.55\00:47:43.59 battled Mexican troops courted in the city, 00:47:43.63\00:47:46.06 forcing General Martin de Cos to surrender. 00:47:46.09\00:47:49.10 The victorious volunteers then occupied the Alamo 00:47:49.13\00:47:52.07 and strengthened its defenses. 00:47:52.10\00:47:55.04 Famous Americans, like David Crockett, Jim Bowie, 00:47:55.07\00:47:57.57 Colonel William Travis made this location, 00:47:57.61\00:48:00.18 this ancient mission, the beachhead, 00:48:00.21\00:48:02.68 the last stand in an epic battle 00:48:02.71\00:48:05.18 to win independence of Texas from Mexico. 00:48:05.21\00:48:08.78 On February 23rd, 1836, 00:48:08.82\00:48:11.72 the arrival of General Antonio Lopez Santa Anna 00:48:11.75\00:48:14.96 nearly caught them by surprise. 00:48:14.99\00:48:16.89 Undaunted, the Texans and Tejanos 00:48:16.93\00:48:19.16 prepared to defend the Alamo. 00:48:19.19\00:48:21.16 For this small ragtag group of rebels, 00:48:21.20\00:48:23.40 the youngest of who was about 16 and the oldest 75, 00:48:23.43\00:48:26.84 was against the well-trained and organized Mexican army 00:48:26.87\00:48:29.90 of 6,000 plus soldiers. 00:48:29.94\00:48:31.94 It was a fierce and lopsided battle, 00:48:31.97\00:48:34.38 yet the small force of rebels was able to repel the troops 00:48:34.41\00:48:37.68 for 13 days. 00:48:37.71\00:48:40.28 Legend holds that with the possibility 00:48:40.32\00:48:42.45 of additional help fading, 00:48:42.48\00:48:44.22 Colonel Travis drew a line in the ground with a sword 00:48:44.25\00:48:47.06 and asked any man willing to stay and fight 00:48:47.09\00:48:49.92 will step over the line. 00:48:49.96\00:48:51.73 All except one crossed over. 00:48:51.76\00:48:54.46 The final assault came before daybreak. 00:48:54.46\00:48:56.63 On the morning of March 6th, 1836, 00:48:56.67\00:48:59.57 the 13th day of the siege, 00:48:59.60\00:49:01.90 cannon and small arms fire from inside the Alamo 00:49:01.94\00:49:04.84 repelled several Mexican attacks. 00:49:04.87\00:49:07.31 Regrouping Santa Anna soldiers scaled the walls 00:49:07.34\00:49:10.65 and rushed into the compound. 00:49:10.68\00:49:12.78 The desperate struggle continued 00:49:12.81\00:49:14.35 until the defenders were overwhelmed. 00:49:14.38\00:49:16.75 By sunrise, the battle had ended 00:49:16.79\00:49:19.09 and the garrison was slain. 00:49:19.12\00:49:20.99 You know, historians may debate some of the details 00:49:21.02\00:49:23.29 regarding the battle of the Alamo 00:49:23.32\00:49:25.19 but none of them question the incredible sacrifice 00:49:25.23\00:49:27.66 that was made and the courage that was displayed 00:49:27.66\00:49:29.70 during that intense conflict. 00:49:29.73\00:49:31.67 They made the ultimate sacrifice 00:49:31.70\00:49:34.00 giving their lives, 00:49:34.04\00:49:35.24 and this is why the story of the Alamo 00:49:35.27\00:49:36.84 is so inspiring and so encouraging. 00:49:36.87\00:49:39.47 You know, and that's why 00:49:39.51\00:49:40.54 the Bible is so inspiring, friends, 00:49:40.58\00:49:42.34 because someone was willing to make the ultimate sacrifice 00:49:42.38\00:49:44.98 and give His life so that you can have freedom 00:49:45.01\00:49:47.42 and eternal life. 00:49:47.45\00:49:49.08 Don't you think you could trust your life to a friend like that 00:49:49.12\00:49:51.85 that would give everything? 00:49:51.89\00:49:53.39 The story of the Gospel is a story of courage and hope, 00:49:53.42\00:49:56.29 it's a story of a God who will never leave you 00:49:56.32\00:49:58.56 without defense and support. 00:49:58.59\00:50:00.40 Jesus is the good news 00:50:00.43\00:50:02.20 and the Gospel is a story worth remembering. 00:50:02.23\00:50:05.10 Can't get enough Amazing Facts Bible Study? 00:50:21.28\00:50:24.19 You don't have to wait until next week 00:51:01.96\00:51:05.06 out of curiosity. 00:51:05.09\00:51:06.80 And from the age of 15 on to 23 was a constant experimentation 00:51:06.83\00:51:13.23 with different substances. 00:51:13.27\00:51:15.47 By the time I was 23, there was not a drug 00:51:15.50\00:51:17.71 I had not tried. 00:51:17.74\00:51:19.64 I had worn myself out searching for happiness. 00:51:19.67\00:51:22.94 And one day I came home tired as usual 00:51:22.98\00:51:26.58 and I started drinking. 00:51:26.61\00:51:28.85 And as usual after I started drinking, 00:51:28.88\00:51:31.15 I started looking for a higher buzz. 00:51:31.19\00:51:35.89 Someone came by with some Xanax, 00:51:35.92\00:51:39.76 someone also came by with something else 00:51:39.79\00:51:42.46 that I liked, and that was cocaine. 00:51:42.50\00:51:45.20 This time, not thinking, I took the whole thing. 00:51:45.23\00:51:48.50 So I went to bed about 5:00 in the afternoon. 00:51:48.54\00:51:51.91 My roommate went off to work that night. 00:51:51.94\00:51:54.64 When he came back from work the next day though, 00:51:54.68\00:51:57.51 he noticed something was wrong 'cause I was still in bed 00:51:57.55\00:52:00.08 in the same position. 00:52:00.12\00:52:02.02 He tried to wake me up and he couldn't wake me up. 00:52:02.05\00:52:06.72 When my parents found me, they found me 00:52:06.76\00:52:09.99 curled up in the fetal position in my hospital room, 00:52:10.03\00:52:14.73 unconscious still. 00:52:14.73\00:52:16.73 And I stayed unconscious in this coma-like state 00:52:16.77\00:52:20.10 for the next week. 00:52:20.14\00:52:21.87 I stayed the next month in the hospital 00:52:21.90\00:52:24.74 slowly getting better to where I could sit up in bed 00:52:24.77\00:52:29.61 and I had to learn to walk again. 00:52:29.64\00:52:31.35 But my parents found this one facility 00:52:31.38\00:52:34.25 out in the hills of Tennessee, 00:52:34.28\00:52:36.32 I had to admit that I liked the place, 00:52:36.35\00:52:39.99 but they were Christian, and even worse than that, 00:52:40.02\00:52:43.53 I said yes when they asked me 00:52:43.56\00:52:45.26 if I wanted to go to church that week. 00:52:45.29\00:52:47.66 Before the pastor said the benediction, 00:52:47.73\00:52:49.53 I was so excited 00:52:49.56\00:52:50.57 because I was planning my escape. 00:52:50.60\00:52:52.60 And so after everybody was all in bed that night, 00:52:52.63\00:52:55.74 I made sure that they were snoring 00:52:55.77\00:52:58.07 and that they were asleep, 00:52:58.11\00:53:00.28 I went into the kitchen and stole a few bananas, 00:53:00.31\00:53:03.04 got my backpack ready, 00:53:03.08\00:53:05.61 I figured I can get sober on my own. 00:53:05.65\00:53:08.48 My favorite song was I did it my way, of course, 00:53:08.52\00:53:12.35 my definition of sober was a nice supply 00:53:12.39\00:53:17.39 of marijuana each day and alcohol on the weekends. 00:53:17.43\00:53:20.96 And of course, if I had a bad hangover, 00:53:20.96\00:53:23.10 I might need some of those relaxing pills to take, 00:53:23.13\00:53:26.03 but other than that, that would be it. 00:53:26.07\00:53:29.87 So here I am stranded on the street 00:53:29.90\00:53:32.21 in the big city of Houston. 00:53:32.24\00:53:33.94 My bag of clothes is gone, my cell phone was gone, 00:53:33.98\00:53:37.38 my wallet, my bus ticket's gone, 00:53:37.41\00:53:39.61 I don't have anything but the shirt on my back. 00:53:39.65\00:53:42.32 It's at that point that this man comes up to me, 00:53:42.35\00:53:44.99 this mysterious man, he's actually very short 00:53:45.02\00:53:48.36 and appears to be homeless, and he led me to some food 00:53:48.39\00:53:51.93 and even a place to stay that night. 00:53:51.96\00:53:54.40 Looking back, it is my firm conclusion 00:53:54.46\00:53:58.07 that that was an angel. 00:53:58.10\00:53:59.63 So my dad was able to come down to Houston 00:53:59.67\00:54:02.87 and pick me up and take me back up 00:54:02.90\00:54:04.64 to the health retreat at Wildwood in Tennessee. 00:54:04.67\00:54:08.34 They had a satellite, on this channel 00:54:08.38\00:54:12.01 there was a man named Doug Batchelor, 00:54:12.05\00:54:14.45 I liked what I heard, 00:54:14.48\00:54:16.48 I liked the way he explained the Bible, it was so simple 00:54:16.52\00:54:18.95 and he also had an experience similar to mine. 00:54:18.99\00:54:22.92 And I talked to Lou about him and they happened to have 00:54:22.96\00:54:25.26 a whole set of cassette tapes. 00:54:25.29\00:54:28.10 I would wake up at 4:00 in the morning sometimes, 00:54:28.13\00:54:30.87 and I would get up, and I would watch 00:54:30.90\00:54:33.37 two of those videos before breakfast. 00:54:33.40\00:54:35.60 I would sit this close to the TV 00:54:35.64\00:54:37.61 watching what Doug Batchelor was saying, 00:54:37.64\00:54:39.91 just eating up every word of it. 00:54:39.94\00:54:41.68 I was so tired of hearing lies and even believing my own lies 00:54:41.71\00:54:45.01 that it was so wonderful to find something 00:54:45.05\00:54:48.25 that was solid and that I could rely on. 00:54:48.28\00:54:51.95 And so when I got home from rehab, 00:54:51.99\00:54:54.69 and in my local church, 00:54:54.72\00:54:56.99 Eric Flickinger from Amazing Facts 00:54:57.03\00:54:59.16 was holding an evangelist series. 00:54:59.19\00:55:01.40 They solidified my conviction and it was then I made 00:55:01.43\00:55:05.90 the absolute decision to follow Jesus. 00:55:05.93\00:55:09.70 I praise the Lord Jesus Christ for Amazing Facts. 00:55:09.74\00:55:13.78 I Praise God for Amazing Facts because they're so Bible based. 00:55:13.81\00:55:18.65 They send out evangelists who are willing 00:55:18.68\00:55:20.95 to teach the truth to people. 00:55:20.98\00:55:23.45 I'm thankful that they're preaching right now 00:55:23.49\00:55:26.52 all over the world changing lives 00:55:26.55\00:55:29.46 just as they changed mine. 00:55:29.49\00:55:33.29 Together we have spread the gospel 00:55:33.33\00:55:35.73 much farther than ever before. 00:55:35.76\00:55:38.53 Thank you for your support. 00:55:38.57\00:55:40.87 Have you ever heard the expression before 00:56:02.19\00:56:04.26 "They eat like a bird," talking about somebody 00:56:04.29\00:56:06.46 that has a minuscule appetite? 00:56:06.49\00:56:08.83 Well, you might want to think twice next time 00:56:08.86\00:56:10.57 you use that expression. 00:56:10.60\00:56:12.13 For example, take the humming bird. 00:56:12.17\00:56:14.67 In order for it to maintain its incredible metabolism, 00:56:14.70\00:56:17.94 it has to eat about 50% of its bodyweight every day. 00:56:17.97\00:56:22.21 To put that in perspective, if a 100-pound woman 00:56:22.24\00:56:25.08 was to eat like a hummingbird, 00:56:25.11\00:56:26.95 she would have to eat fifty pounds of sugar a day 00:56:26.98\00:56:29.48 just to maintain her body weight. 00:56:29.52\00:56:31.35 Imagine that. 00:56:31.39\00:56:32.85 Maybe you don't want to imagine that. 00:56:32.89\00:56:35.32 But perhaps, you want to consider this another way. 00:56:35.36\00:56:37.83 The hummingbird typically consumes 00:56:37.86\00:56:39.56 between four to seven calories a day. 00:56:39.59\00:56:41.80 On the other hand, a human about 3,500 calories a day. 00:56:41.83\00:56:45.90 But if you were to eat like a bird, a hummingbird, 00:56:45.93\00:56:48.34 you would have to eat over 150,000 calories a day. 00:56:48.37\00:56:54.21 But that's like a man, 170 pounds 00:56:54.24\00:56:56.21 that would be eating 3,000 Oreo cookies. 00:56:56.24\00:57:00.38 Under normal conditions, a hummingbird needs to eat 00:57:00.42\00:57:02.85 every five or ten minutes, but there's actually one time 00:57:02.88\00:57:05.72 during the year the hummingbird will eat 00:57:05.75\00:57:07.62 its entire bodyweight every day. 00:57:07.66\00:57:10.86 You see, once a year, they make this migration 00:57:10.89\00:57:13.40 of 500 miles across the Gulf of Mexico 00:57:13.43\00:57:16.26 from Texas to the Yucatan Peninsula. 00:57:16.30\00:57:20.04 In order to do that, 00:57:20.07\00:57:21.50 the hummingbird feasts on nectar 00:57:21.54\00:57:23.57 and gorges themselves on this nectar 00:57:23.61\00:57:26.11 for about a week, doubling their bodyweight. 00:57:26.14\00:57:29.08 That's the only way they can store enough calories 00:57:29.11\00:57:31.31 to help them with their 70 wing beats per second, 00:57:31.35\00:57:34.98 a roughly 4 million wing beats on that journey. 00:57:35.02\00:57:38.79 You know, in the same way, friends, 00:57:38.82\00:57:39.85 as we near the end of time, we need to be feasting 00:57:39.89\00:57:42.66 and gorging ourselves on the nectar of God's Word. 00:57:42.69\00:57:45.66 We've got to be able to have that strength 00:57:45.69\00:57:47.30 to get us through the times of trouble that are ahead. 00:57:47.30\00:57:49.86 So when it comes to the Bible and your personal devotions, 00:57:49.90\00:57:52.67 if you're gonna eat like a bird, 00:57:52.70\00:57:54.47 eat like a hummingbird. 00:57:54.50\00:57:56.07
