Now today in particular we're gonna be talking about, 00:00:15.71\00:00:19.08 the sermon title is "From Friend to Fugitive". 00:00:19.08\00:00:23.39 Now you've probably heard the expression 00:00:23.39\00:00:25.15 before that power or authority can corrupt, 00:00:25.15\00:00:30.06 and absolute power can corrupt absolutely. 00:00:30.06\00:00:34.23 And unfortunately, 00:00:34.23\00:00:35.36 when God had taken King Saul 00:00:35.36\00:00:38.13 from being just one of the common people 00:00:38.13\00:00:41.00 and exalted him to king. 00:00:41.00\00:00:42.27 At first, he was small in his own eyes, 00:00:42.27\00:00:44.11 but then as he met with some success, 00:00:44.11\00:00:46.24 some popularity, and some acclaim of the people, 00:00:46.24\00:00:49.94 he started believing in all the compliments. 00:00:49.94\00:00:52.68 You know, when you have power and influence, 00:00:52.68\00:00:54.68 people will say all kinds of nice things to you 00:00:54.68\00:00:56.52 because they may be want favors, 00:00:56.52\00:00:58.22 and they'll give you all kinds of compliments, 00:00:58.22\00:01:00.39 and if you start believing all of that, 00:01:00.39\00:01:02.69 it can be very damaging. 00:01:02.69\00:01:04.66 And Saul began to accept this adoration 00:01:04.66\00:01:07.60 and this worship and think more highly of himself, 00:01:07.60\00:01:10.57 started disregarding the Lord and the law of the Lord, 00:01:10.57\00:01:14.60 and ultimately he started grieving away the spirit. 00:01:14.60\00:01:19.14 And God told Samuel, pick someone else to be king. 00:01:19.14\00:01:22.68 So David was chosen 00:01:22.68\00:01:24.21 and anointed this shepherd boy to be the king 00:01:24.21\00:01:27.75 that would someday replace Saul, 00:01:27.75\00:01:29.42 but it did not happen quickly. 00:01:29.42\00:01:31.59 God is very patient in the way He works out His will. 00:01:31.59\00:01:35.52 And strangely, Saul and now he became disturbed 00:01:35.52\00:01:38.93 because when the Spirit of the Lord 00:01:38.93\00:01:40.23 left Saul, evil spirits tend to come in. 00:01:40.23\00:01:43.23 You know that parable where Jesus said, 00:01:43.23\00:01:44.93 "If a man is freed from an evil spirit 00:01:44.93\00:01:47.67 if he does not replace it with something good, 00:01:47.67\00:01:50.07 seven worse will come in." 00:01:50.07\00:01:52.41 And when the Holy Spirit left that vacuum, 00:01:52.41\00:01:54.81 and Saul had been grieving away 00:01:54.81\00:01:56.44 and disobeying the Spirit of God, 00:01:56.44\00:01:58.65 he was then tormented by evil spirits, 00:01:58.65\00:02:01.85 and darkness, and melancholy. 00:02:01.85\00:02:03.62 And they said, you need a musician 00:02:03.62\00:02:05.85 who will come and pray, 00:02:05.85\00:02:07.06 play some inspiring music for you. 00:02:07.06\00:02:09.49 And we've heard that there is this 00:02:09.49\00:02:10.93 son of Jesse in Bethlehem, 00:02:10.93\00:02:12.93 he's very skilled and he can sing too. 00:02:12.93\00:02:16.43 And bring him, let him see 00:02:16.43\00:02:17.67 if the music will lift your spirits, 00:02:17.67\00:02:19.40 and David was brought, and sure enough it did. 00:02:19.40\00:02:22.60 Well, it wasn't long after this 00:02:22.60\00:02:24.91 that there was this challenge with Goliath 00:02:24.91\00:02:27.01 which is 1 Samuel 17. 00:02:27.01\00:02:29.54 And we know that story, that David, 00:02:29.54\00:02:32.31 he ends up coming back from the fields once again, 00:02:32.31\00:02:35.35 comes to the front of the battle 00:02:35.35\00:02:37.25 and he soundly defeats Goliath. 00:02:37.25\00:02:41.52 Takes Goliath sword, 00:02:41.52\00:02:43.73 removes Goliath's head 00:02:43.73\00:02:45.43 after he renders him unconscious with a stone. 00:02:45.43\00:02:49.70 Yeah, and this is where our story takes up now 00:02:49.70\00:02:52.77 and you go to 1 Samuel 18. 00:02:52.77\00:02:56.97 And Saul is talking to his general saying, 00:02:56.97\00:03:01.01 "Who is this young man's family 00:03:01.01\00:03:03.71 because I promised whoever defeats though, 00:03:03.71\00:03:05.78 the giant would be tax free in the kingdom, 00:03:05.78\00:03:09.42 and there'd be some benefits, and some rewards." 00:03:09.42\00:03:12.95 And they said, 00:03:12.95\00:03:14.46 "Well, I'm not sure who his family is, 00:03:14.46\00:03:16.39 you know, David had been there in the court of Saul, 00:03:16.39\00:03:19.03 but I guess they hadn't done a lot of talking. 00:03:19.03\00:03:21.66 And finally, Saul calls him, and this is chapter 17:58. 00:03:21.66\00:03:26.07 He said, "'Whose son are you, young man?' 00:03:26.07\00:03:28.24 So David answered," and said, 00:03:28.24\00:03:29.64 "I'm the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite." 00:03:29.64\00:03:33.78 Now when he had finished speaking to Saul, 00:03:33.78\00:03:36.31 evidently when Saul was talking to David, 00:03:36.31\00:03:39.25 the crown prince 00:03:39.25\00:03:40.52 Saul's oldest son Jonathan was there. 00:03:40.52\00:03:44.75 And it says, "And Jonathan loved him as his own soul." 00:03:44.75\00:03:50.16 That's an interesting statement to make but, you know, 00:03:50.16\00:03:53.19 Jonathan when you read about him early, 00:03:53.19\00:03:55.20 he's very different from his father. 00:03:55.20\00:03:57.37 Jonathan had the courage to go into battle 00:03:57.37\00:03:59.93 with his armor bearer. 00:03:59.93\00:04:01.07 You remember, when he said, 00:04:01.07\00:04:03.14 "I realize there's only two of us, 00:04:03.14\00:04:04.71 but if the Lord is with us then it doesn't matter 00:04:04.71\00:04:07.74 'cause you and God are always majority." 00:04:07.74\00:04:09.48 And Jonathan and his armor bearer 00:04:09.48\00:04:12.01 defeated a garrison of 20 Philistines 00:04:12.01\00:04:14.58 just the two of them, 00:04:14.58\00:04:15.78 so he had a large hearted man, he had a lot of faith. 00:04:15.78\00:04:20.52 And when he saw the faith of David 00:04:20.52\00:04:22.22 going against the giant, he was inspired, 00:04:22.22\00:04:24.26 he said, yes, that's what I wanted to do, 00:04:24.26\00:04:26.59 but my father wouldn't let me, that's my theory, 00:04:26.59\00:04:29.23 I can't prove it, but you can't disprove it. 00:04:29.23\00:04:31.73 And it says that, 00:04:31.73\00:04:32.80 "Jonathan loved him as his own soul." 00:04:32.80\00:04:34.57 There was something that the two of them shared, 00:04:34.57\00:04:37.67 you've met people before 00:04:37.67\00:04:38.84 and you've had friends before 00:04:38.84\00:04:39.87 where you know that you clicked, 00:04:39.87\00:04:42.28 that you just resonated. 00:04:42.28\00:04:43.68 You sometimes knew what the other was thinking 00:04:43.68\00:04:45.25 before they spoke, 00:04:45.25\00:04:46.78 and the hearts and the souls of Jonathan and David were one. 00:04:46.78\00:04:51.65 And it says, "He loved him as his own soul." 00:04:51.65\00:04:54.19 And verse 2, "Saul took him that day, 00:04:54.19\00:04:56.96 and would not let him go home to his father's house anymore." 00:04:56.96\00:04:59.66 'Cause prior to this David was sort of on call, 00:04:59.66\00:05:03.20 when he would have, 00:05:03.20\00:05:04.37 when Saul would have these 00:05:04.37\00:05:06.07 bouts of depression and melancholy, 00:05:06.07\00:05:08.20 David would be called 00:05:08.20\00:05:09.40 and he'd come and he'd play and he'd be refreshed 00:05:09.40\00:05:11.84 then he get busy with other things 00:05:11.84\00:05:13.11 and David would go back home again. 00:05:13.11\00:05:15.01 But now he's telling David 00:05:15.01\00:05:16.31 to look after the giant business, 00:05:16.31\00:05:17.98 you're staying, you're good luck, 00:05:17.98\00:05:19.21 you're staying with me, 00:05:19.21\00:05:20.92 I don't wanna let him go home." 00:05:20.92\00:05:22.38 Now this next verse talks about the great friendship. 00:05:22.38\00:05:26.15 It says, "Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, 00:05:26.15\00:05:29.76 because he loved him as his own soul." 00:05:29.76\00:05:32.43 Now I want to pause here before I read the next verse. 00:05:32.43\00:05:35.80 The word "Jonathan" 00:05:35.80\00:05:37.47 the way you say God or one of the names for God 00:05:37.47\00:05:40.00 in Hebrew is Yahweh, 00:05:40.00\00:05:43.20 and sometimes you'll find like 00:05:43.20\00:05:45.27 Joshua, Yeshua, it means, Yahweh is savior, 00:05:45.27\00:05:49.94 same name as Jesus. 00:05:49.94\00:05:51.45 When you see Jesus again in Hebrew is Yeshua. 00:05:51.45\00:05:56.79 Yonatan is Jonathan. 00:05:56.79\00:06:00.26 Nathan means gift, 00:06:00.26\00:06:04.46 Jonathan means gift of God. 00:06:04.46\00:06:06.73 You've heard the name Nathaniel, 00:06:06.73\00:06:08.30 it's another name for God. 00:06:08.30\00:06:09.36 Elohim, that means gift of God, 00:06:09.36\00:06:10.93 it's just kind of a reverse way of saying it. 00:06:10.93\00:06:12.93 We've got a boy named Nathan, It means gift, 00:06:12.93\00:06:16.10 and gifts come in many forms, 00:06:16.10\00:06:18.71 as Nathan is a gift. 00:06:18.71\00:06:20.81 But Jonathan means gift of God and He is the son of the King. 00:06:20.81\00:06:27.82 He is a type of Christ, 00:06:27.82\00:06:30.09 says, he loved David as his own soul. 00:06:30.09\00:06:31.65 Now listen how he demonstrates that love 00:06:31.65\00:06:34.06 that he makes a covenant. 00:06:34.06\00:06:36.09 Does Jesus make a covenant with us, 00:06:36.09\00:06:38.19 because He loves us like his own soul? 00:06:38.19\00:06:41.06 You still with me? 00:06:41.06\00:06:43.00 Jonathan took off the robe that was on him 00:06:43.00\00:06:45.13 and he gave it to David. 00:06:45.13\00:06:47.54 Does Jesus give us a robe, 00:06:47.54\00:06:50.11 a symbol of His righteousness? 00:06:50.11\00:06:53.41 And it says, "He gave him his armor." 00:06:53.41\00:06:56.95 Does the Bible tell us in Ephesians 6 00:06:56.95\00:06:59.58 that the Son of the King, 00:06:59.58\00:07:02.05 Jesus, the gift of God, 00:07:02.05\00:07:03.89 God so loved the world He gave His Son 00:07:03.89\00:07:05.59 that the heavenly Jonathan gives us his armor. 00:07:05.59\00:07:09.86 We are to put on the armor of God. 00:07:09.86\00:07:12.36 You know, David didn't want the armor of Saul 00:07:12.36\00:07:14.83 but he does take the armor of Jonathan, 00:07:14.83\00:07:17.23 might have been more of his size too. 00:07:17.23\00:07:19.97 And it says, "Even his sword." 00:07:19.97\00:07:22.34 Does Jesus give us a sword, the Word of God? 00:07:22.34\00:07:26.01 "And his bow", in the Bible, the bow is a symbol of strength 00:07:26.01\00:07:28.88 'cause it took strength to pull back those bows. 00:07:28.88\00:07:31.75 "And his belt", another implement 00:07:31.75\00:07:33.35 in the armor of God, the belt of truth. 00:07:33.35\00:07:35.25 And so he makes his covenant with him 'cause he loves him 00:07:35.25\00:07:38.12 and he gives him all the things necessary to be victorious. 00:07:38.12\00:07:41.76 It's interesting that as David is preparing to go through 00:07:41.76\00:07:46.39 one of the hardest times in his life, 00:07:46.39\00:07:47.96 because up until now when he killed the giant, 00:07:47.96\00:07:50.17 but David doesn't show 00:07:50.17\00:07:51.33 that he's gone through any real trials. 00:07:51.33\00:07:53.47 We're getting ready to read about a number of trials, 00:07:53.47\00:07:56.84 where David goes from his friendship with Jonathan 00:07:56.84\00:07:59.71 to being a fugitive 00:07:59.71\00:08:00.81 and it's almost like God is telling us 00:08:00.81\00:08:03.21 at the beginning of these chapters 00:08:03.21\00:08:06.58 that he makes a covenant with them, 00:08:06.58\00:08:09.18 he arms him, 00:08:09.18\00:08:10.22 he gives him everything he's gonna need 00:08:10.22\00:08:12.45 to survive the trials he's about to go through, 00:08:12.45\00:08:14.72 so I think there's a spiritual analogy here. 00:08:14.72\00:08:17.66 Verse 5, in 1 Samuel 18:5, 00:08:17.66\00:08:21.36 "So David went out 00:08:21.36\00:08:22.80 and wherever Saul sent him, and he behaved wisely." 00:08:22.80\00:08:26.13 Why? 'Cause the Holy Spirit has come upon him. 00:08:26.13\00:08:28.97 "And Saul set him over the men of war, 00:08:28.97\00:08:31.47 and he was accepted in the sight of the people..." 00:08:31.47\00:08:33.61 He's the hero, he's killed the giant. 00:08:33.61\00:08:35.68 "And also in the sight of Saul's servants." 00:08:35.68\00:08:38.15 And up to this point, it says Saul loved David also, 00:08:38.15\00:08:42.08 you'll notice it says, Jonathan loved David. 00:08:42.08\00:08:45.22 The servants loved David. 00:08:45.22\00:08:47.42 "Now it happened as they were coming home, 00:08:47.42\00:08:49.49 when David was returning 00:08:49.49\00:08:50.76 from the slaughter of the Philistine, 00:08:50.76\00:08:52.89 that the women had come out of all the cities of Israel..." 00:08:52.89\00:08:56.03 Now they've come back from one of their battles 00:08:56.03\00:08:58.87 and with the Philistines 00:08:58.87\00:09:01.74 and you've probably seen a victory parade before, 00:09:01.74\00:09:05.21 you know, at the time of this recording 00:09:05.21\00:09:06.88 a Super Bowl completed, 00:09:06.88\00:09:09.91 and the winning team, 00:09:09.91\00:09:11.65 and I guess it was quite a game. 00:09:11.65\00:09:14.52 The winning team had a victory parade, 00:09:14.52\00:09:16.52 even though the weather was very inclement, 00:09:16.52\00:09:18.15 everybody came out 00:09:18.15\00:09:19.39 and they all wanted to welcome their heroes 00:09:19.39\00:09:21.42 and praise their heroes. 00:09:21.42\00:09:22.76 Well, when they came back from a victorious battle 00:09:22.76\00:09:24.93 against the Philistines, 00:09:24.93\00:09:26.19 all the people came up principally women 00:09:26.19\00:09:27.96 'cause all the men are fighting. 00:09:27.96\00:09:29.80 And the women would dress up 00:09:29.80\00:09:31.00 and they'd get their tambourines, and they play 00:09:31.00\00:09:33.00 and they sing these songs of victory 00:09:33.00\00:09:36.27 and they had the ticker tape parade. 00:09:36.27\00:09:38.14 And while they're doing, here's one of the songs. 00:09:38.14\00:09:41.54 It says, "The women sang as they dance, 00:09:41.54\00:09:43.45 they went out before the procession." 00:09:43.45\00:09:45.81 Saul has slain his thousands," 00:09:45.81\00:09:48.95 and Saul heard that and he smiled 00:09:48.95\00:09:51.55 and he took a chest full of air 00:09:51.55\00:09:53.39 and made him feel really good, 00:09:53.39\00:09:54.76 and start to look down on all the people 00:09:54.76\00:09:56.73 'cause he was taller and being on a horse, 00:09:56.73\00:09:58.33 he was really high, 00:09:58.33\00:10:00.36 but then he heard the next verse. 00:10:00.36\00:10:03.63 And the women went on to sing, 00:10:03.63\00:10:04.97 and I don't know who wrote this song 00:10:04.97\00:10:06.17 and they never get royalties for it, 00:10:06.17\00:10:08.24 but someone wrote the second verse, 00:10:08.24\00:10:12.27 and it calls all kinds of problems. 00:10:12.27\00:10:14.58 "And David his ten thousands." 00:10:14.58\00:10:17.88 Now David was the armor bearer of Saul, 00:10:17.88\00:10:19.81 Saul's coming back, 00:10:19.81\00:10:21.05 Saul was leading the parade and David is back a little bit. 00:10:21.05\00:10:25.15 And when Saul hears them say, Saul has slain his, how many? 00:10:25.15\00:10:30.79 Thousands. 00:10:30.79\00:10:32.16 But then the women go on to say, 00:10:32.16\00:10:33.53 "And David his ten thousands." 00:10:33.53\00:10:36.20 He was, "what?" 00:10:36.20\00:10:37.90 Instead of saying, that's right take a bow David, 00:10:37.90\00:10:40.74 you deserve it, isn't he great? 00:10:40.74\00:10:42.40 And cheering along, he becomes resentful, 00:10:42.40\00:10:45.61 he's jealous. 00:10:45.61\00:10:47.78 If you don't have the Spirit of God, 00:10:47.78\00:10:48.91 there's only one alternative, whose spirit do you have? 00:10:48.91\00:10:52.75 If you are not like Christ, 00:10:52.75\00:10:54.32 you're like the other character. 00:10:54.32\00:10:57.15 And Satan wants all the praise and the glory. 00:10:57.15\00:11:01.56 And when Saul grieved away the Spirit of God, 00:11:01.56\00:11:03.76 he wanted all the praise and the glory, 00:11:03.76\00:11:05.49 and when he heard them giving acclaim to David, 00:11:05.49\00:11:08.56 he now becomes very jealous, he's not at all happy, 00:11:08.56\00:11:12.43 and he starts to resent it. 00:11:12.43\00:11:14.57 The Bible says that, "Saul was very angry..." 00:11:14.57\00:11:18.27 Verse 8, "Saying, and the saying displeased him. 00:11:18.27\00:11:22.08 And he said, 00:11:22.08\00:11:23.14 'They have ascribed to David ten thousand, 00:11:23.14\00:11:25.31 to me they've only ascribed thousands." 00:11:25.31\00:11:27.62 Now anyone out there have been given credit 00:11:27.62\00:11:29.55 for slaying thousands of enemies? 00:11:29.55\00:11:32.02 I mean, I would be happy with that 00:11:32.02\00:11:34.09 and he was until he heard the next verse. 00:11:34.09\00:11:38.16 You know, if you go to Baskin-Robbins 00:11:38.16\00:11:40.30 try this sometime, you got a couple of kids. 00:11:40.30\00:11:44.07 Get one two scoops and hand them their two scoops 00:11:44.07\00:11:46.50 and they will be so happy, 00:11:46.50\00:11:47.60 but then get their sibling three scoops. 00:11:47.60\00:11:51.34 Watch the problems that will cause. 00:11:51.34\00:11:53.71 Even if they've only got room to eat two scoops, 00:11:53.71\00:11:56.71 the fact that one of the others got three, 00:11:56.71\00:11:59.31 they're not happy with two anymore. 00:11:59.31\00:12:02.08 They would have been happy, 00:12:02.08\00:12:03.85 but the idea that someone else got more. 00:12:03.85\00:12:08.12 Millionaires are happy until they find out 00:12:08.12\00:12:09.76 that someone else got a billion, 00:12:09.76\00:12:11.53 and they're not happy anymore. 00:12:11.53\00:12:13.93 Someone asked Rockefeller, 00:12:13.93\00:12:15.96 "How much money does it take to make a person happy?" 00:12:15.96\00:12:19.83 He said, "A little more." 00:12:19.83\00:12:21.87 It's always a little more. 00:12:21.87\00:12:24.27 And if you don't have the Spirit of God, 00:12:24.27\00:12:26.17 then you're never satisfied, and Saul is unsatisfied 00:12:26.17\00:12:29.64 with the amount of praise he's getting, 00:12:29.64\00:12:30.98 especially if someone gets more. 00:12:30.98\00:12:32.55 I'm the king and he goes on and he says, 00:12:32.55\00:12:34.98 "They're giving him credit for ten thousands, 00:12:34.98\00:12:37.35 and me only thousands." 00:12:37.35\00:12:39.29 And then he adds, 00:12:39.29\00:12:40.46 "What more can he have but the kingdom?" 00:12:40.46\00:12:43.83 Now don't forget 00:12:43.83\00:12:45.29 Saul had received word from Samuel the prophet, 00:12:45.29\00:12:48.56 the Lord is going to take the kingdom away from you 00:12:48.56\00:12:51.40 and give it to your neighbor who is better than you. 00:12:51.40\00:12:53.97 He knew that there was someone, a nigh brother, 00:12:53.97\00:12:56.81 someone else in the kingdom 00:12:56.81\00:12:57.91 that was going to get the kingdom. 00:12:57.91\00:13:00.04 And it just cracks me up that, 00:13:00.04\00:13:02.91 he kept suspiciously looking 00:13:02.91\00:13:04.58 at all the other subjects wondering, what are their clan? 00:13:04.58\00:13:06.61 What are their family? 00:13:06.61\00:13:07.65 Where was this person that was gonna 00:13:07.65\00:13:08.92 dare to replace him? 00:13:08.92\00:13:12.32 And all of that while he get, he'd think about 00:13:12.32\00:13:14.49 who was going to replace him and it would bother him, 00:13:14.49\00:13:16.36 and he go into one of his fits of depression, 00:13:16.36\00:13:18.36 and anger, and rage. 00:13:18.36\00:13:19.79 And he said, "David come play for me, 00:13:19.79\00:13:21.16 I got to figure out who it is gonna replace me." 00:13:21.16\00:13:23.73 He was David, his musician. 00:13:23.73\00:13:26.53 This is the first time he begins to suspect 00:13:26.53\00:13:29.80 that maybe David is the one, after all he killed the giant, 00:13:29.80\00:13:34.14 all the people love him. 00:13:34.14\00:13:35.81 Boy, if there was an election, they'd vote for him right now. 00:13:35.81\00:13:38.81 You see what's happening in his mind. 00:13:38.81\00:13:41.45 And he's thinking, oh, maybe David is the one. 00:13:41.45\00:13:45.22 And from that moment, verse 9, 00:13:45.22\00:13:47.89 "So Saul eyed David from that day forward." 00:13:47.89\00:13:51.19 And here is where David's trials really begin. 00:13:51.19\00:13:54.36 "And it happens..." 00:13:54.36\00:13:55.43 verse 10, "The next day 00:13:55.43\00:13:57.13 a distressing spirit came from God on Saul, 00:13:57.13\00:14:01.10 and he prophesied, he's ranting in the house. 00:14:01.10\00:14:04.64 And David played music, David's got his beautiful harp, 00:14:04.64\00:14:07.78 and he's strumming, and he's singing, 00:14:07.78\00:14:09.41 he's trying to soothe them, but why is Saul ranting. 00:14:09.41\00:14:12.61 The day after this parade, he's upset, 00:14:12.61\00:14:14.45 what's he upset about? 00:14:14.45\00:14:15.85 David, and so David's there, and he's trying to soothe him, 00:14:15.85\00:14:19.49 the last person in the world now Saul wants to soothe him 00:14:19.49\00:14:22.52 is the one that is scaring him, that he's gonna take his place. 00:14:22.52\00:14:26.86 And so in a fit of jealousy, 00:14:26.86\00:14:29.33 it says, "His spear was in his hand. 00:14:29.33\00:14:32.97 And Saul cast the spear, 00:14:32.97\00:14:37.17 and he said, 'I will pin David to the wall.'" 00:14:37.17\00:14:39.74 But, you know, if you can kill giants, 00:14:40.84\00:14:42.54 you're usually pretty quick. 00:14:42.54\00:14:44.51 And David being a shepherd and all, 00:14:44.51\00:14:47.42 he quickly ducked and evaded the spear. 00:14:47.42\00:14:51.45 Some of you remember that image from the news years ago 00:14:51.45\00:14:54.89 when President George W. Bush 00:14:54.89\00:14:59.16 was in Iraq at a news conference, 00:14:59.16\00:15:02.50 and one of the Iraqis who wasn't too happy about 00:15:02.50\00:15:05.30 what was going on there, 00:15:05.30\00:15:07.27 took off his shoe and threw it at the president. 00:15:07.27\00:15:09.44 Remember all that. 00:15:09.44\00:15:11.41 And that's a terribly disrespectful thing 00:15:11.41\00:15:13.04 but, you know, what really impress folks, 00:15:13.04\00:15:15.08 is a guy threw two shoes, Bush dodged them both. 00:15:15.08\00:15:20.32 And I was really impressed with his coordination. 00:15:20.32\00:15:22.75 And someone asked Laura about it and she said, 00:15:22.75\00:15:24.92 "He's always been very athletic." 00:15:24.92\00:15:27.79 But it says that not only did this happen once, 00:15:27.79\00:15:31.06 you notice in verse 11, it says, 00:15:31.06\00:15:32.43 "He escaped his presence twice", 00:15:32.43\00:15:34.20 it tells you later about the second incident, 00:15:34.20\00:15:36.43 throws a spear at him. 00:15:36.43\00:15:37.63 Now I wouldn't go back to work, if my boss did that to me. 00:15:37.63\00:15:41.87 But he's the king 00:15:41.87\00:15:43.37 and they knew he was having mental problems. 00:15:43.37\00:15:45.37 They said, well, maybe that was just an episode, 00:15:45.37\00:15:47.04 he will get over and that won't happen again, 00:15:47.04\00:15:49.34 but it didn't happen so fast. 00:15:49.34\00:15:51.61 So Saul finally fires David. 00:15:51.61\00:15:54.78 David is removed from his position 00:15:54.78\00:15:57.89 as the medical minstrel in the palace. 00:15:57.89\00:16:00.92 You heard of medical missionaries, 00:16:00.92\00:16:03.22 David was a medical musician. 00:16:03.22\00:16:05.63 And so he says, 00:16:05.63\00:16:06.73 "Look, I don't want you in the palace and you don't, 00:16:06.73\00:16:08.50 no more playing for me anymore. 00:16:08.50\00:16:10.77 He says, I want to make you a captain of thousands, 00:16:10.77\00:16:13.54 we're engaged in full ongoing 00:16:13.54\00:16:16.40 declaration of war with the Philistines. 00:16:16.40\00:16:18.51 I'm gonna put you in charge of a thousand soldiers, 00:16:18.51\00:16:20.78 you're to lead them into battle. 00:16:20.78\00:16:22.24 And he thought to himself, you know, 00:16:22.24\00:16:23.91 there was a high mortality rate among those soldiers, 00:16:23.91\00:16:26.55 the captains of thousands, 00:16:26.55\00:16:28.22 thought I don't want to destroy him, 00:16:28.22\00:16:30.25 I'll make the Philistines kill him. 00:16:30.25\00:16:32.52 And it says, "So David went out and came in before the people." 00:16:32.52\00:16:35.66 Verse 14, "David behaved himself wisely 00:16:35.66\00:16:38.93 in all his ways, 00:16:38.93\00:16:40.06 and the Lord was with him and he kept winning victories. 00:16:40.06\00:16:43.97 Therefore, when Saul saw 00:16:43.97\00:16:45.60 that he behaved himself a very wisely, 00:16:45.60\00:16:48.17 now how count how many times it says, 00:16:48.17\00:16:49.70 "David behaved himself wisely, wisely, wisely." 00:16:49.70\00:16:53.74 He's gone from being a shepherd 00:16:53.74\00:16:56.11 to hobnobbing in the palace of the kingdom 00:16:56.11\00:16:58.51 and he's praying always 00:16:58.51\00:17:00.08 that God will give him wisdom 00:17:00.08\00:17:01.08 to know what to say, when to be quiet, 00:17:01.08\00:17:02.58 how to conduct himself wisely, 00:17:02.58\00:17:04.22 all of this and he's gone from being a shepherd, 00:17:04.22\00:17:05.99 he's leading soldiers in the battle, 00:17:05.99\00:17:07.52 he was still comparatively a young man. 00:17:07.52\00:17:10.29 I remember years ago 00:17:10.29\00:17:11.36 when I first went into ministry... 00:17:11.36\00:17:14.36 Oh, no, even before I was in ministry, 00:17:14.36\00:17:17.27 when I started attending church 00:17:17.27\00:17:19.23 and I started teaching the Sabbath school class 00:17:19.23\00:17:21.57 that some of the folks in the church 00:17:21.57\00:17:23.24 got to get in, they said, Doug, we need to ordain you an elder. 00:17:23.24\00:17:28.11 I said, "An elder," said, "I'd barely grown a moustache, 00:17:28.11\00:17:31.51 you want to make me an elder." 00:17:31.51\00:17:34.52 I don't want to be unkind, 00:17:34.52\00:17:36.48 but any of you ever had Mormon missionaries 00:17:36.48\00:17:38.29 visit your house? 00:17:38.29\00:17:39.95 That's commendable that they're out there doing that. 00:17:39.95\00:17:42.66 But, you know, they wear a name tag, what does it say? 00:17:42.66\00:17:45.93 Say so and so Elder Jones and Elder Carpenter, 00:17:45.93\00:17:48.63 whoever it is, it will say elder 00:17:48.63\00:17:49.86 and some of these are young guys, 00:17:49.86\00:17:51.60 they can't even grow a mustache yet. 00:17:51.60\00:17:53.84 The word for elder there in the Bible is presbuteros 00:17:53.84\00:17:56.77 and it means people of age and experience. 00:17:56.77\00:17:59.04 I said, "Elder?" 00:17:59.04\00:18:00.74 And the one's that are asking me were in their 80s. 00:18:00.74\00:18:02.94 Said, "Doug, we want to make you an elder." 00:18:02.94\00:18:05.88 And I studied it out and I said, "I'm doing this." 00:18:05.88\00:18:08.95 "Well, this is what you got to do, 00:18:08.95\00:18:09.98 if you're gonna teach and if you're gonna, 00:18:09.98\00:18:11.12 you know, minister to community you need to be an elder, 00:18:11.12\00:18:12.85 and so they finally talk to me into being an elder, 00:18:12.85\00:18:14.62 but I always felt like that was a misnomer. 00:18:14.62\00:18:16.93 I felt like I'm way out of my league, 00:18:16.93\00:18:18.73 so here David is just, 00:18:18.73\00:18:20.60 you know, he hasn't even... 00:18:20.60\00:18:21.80 When he went to fight Goliath, Saul said, 00:18:21.80\00:18:23.26 "You're just a youth, he's a man of war." 00:18:23.26\00:18:25.80 But now he's telling him, 00:18:25.80\00:18:26.87 "I'll make you a captain of a thousand 00:18:26.87\00:18:29.54 but he's winning battles. 00:18:29.54\00:18:31.34 He's learning some of the skills 00:18:31.34\00:18:33.17 he learned dodging bears 00:18:33.17\00:18:35.31 and wolves and lions out there in the wilderness, 00:18:35.31\00:18:38.91 when it came to knowing the terrain 00:18:38.91\00:18:40.62 and leading his army. 00:18:40.62\00:18:41.88 And David was a very successful general. 00:18:41.88\00:18:44.95 You'll never find in the Bible where David lost a battle, 00:18:44.95\00:18:48.26 not with the enemy on the battlefield, very brave, 00:18:48.26\00:18:52.79 very courageous, very strong, and very successful. 00:18:52.79\00:18:56.97 And this started bothering him, more successful he was, 00:18:56.97\00:18:59.57 the more it bothered Saul. 00:18:59.57\00:19:01.24 Saul doesn't want him to be successful. 00:19:01.24\00:19:03.67 The more he's victorious, the more kingly he appears. 00:19:03.67\00:19:06.71 And Saul is now afraid that 00:19:06.71\00:19:07.91 David's the one that's gonna take his place. 00:19:07.91\00:19:10.48 Verse 15, "When Saul saw that he behaved very wisely, 00:19:10.48\00:19:14.15 he was afraid of him. 00:19:14.15\00:19:16.02 But all Israel and Judah loved David," you notice that? 00:19:16.02\00:19:19.09 First it says, Saul loved him, now Saul hates him. 00:19:19.09\00:19:22.12 You read in chapter 16, it says Saul loved David. 00:19:22.12\00:19:25.59 Jonathan loves him. 00:19:25.59\00:19:27.60 All of Israel loves him. 00:19:27.60\00:19:31.53 And so Saul said to David, I got an idea, 00:19:31.53\00:19:35.27 he's a poor shepherd, I'll let him marry my daughter 00:19:35.27\00:19:37.47 because when he killed the giant, 00:19:37.47\00:19:39.51 then one of the ideas was 00:19:39.51\00:19:40.61 you're gonna get to marry one of the king's daughter, 00:19:40.61\00:19:42.14 Saul had several children. 00:19:42.14\00:19:44.31 And he said, "I'll let him marry my daughter Merab 00:19:44.31\00:19:47.55 and I'll give you to you as wife. 00:19:47.55\00:19:49.42 Only be valiant for me and fight the Lord's battles. 00:19:49.42\00:19:52.52 For Saul thought, 00:19:52.52\00:19:54.22 'Let my hand not be against him, 00:19:54.22\00:19:56.26 but let the hand of the Philistines 00:19:56.26\00:19:58.16 be against him.'" 00:19:58.16\00:19:59.43 Now that idea of killing your enemy 00:19:59.43\00:20:01.66 through your enemies. 00:20:01.66\00:20:03.57 David later picked up on that, 00:20:03.57\00:20:05.33 and you remember what David did 00:20:05.33\00:20:06.40 when he wanted to get rid of Uriah? 00:20:06.40\00:20:08.77 Said, "I won't lift my hand against him, 00:20:08.77\00:20:10.57 make him go to the front of the hottest battle 00:20:10.57\00:20:13.04 with the Amorites and let them kill him, 00:20:13.04\00:20:17.05 and it happened, but didn't work for Saul. 00:20:17.05\00:20:20.28 Saul hoped that, 00:20:20.28\00:20:21.85 "Look, I know you're poor and you can't pay a dowry, 00:20:21.85\00:20:24.09 but if you go fight battles for me, 00:20:24.09\00:20:26.29 and if you'll kill a hundred Philistines, 00:20:26.29\00:20:29.69 bring me evidence 00:20:29.69\00:20:30.79 that you've killed hundred Philistines, 00:20:30.79\00:20:32.26 you know, David just didn't feel worthy." 00:20:32.26\00:20:34.10 He said, "So you think it's a small thing 00:20:34.10\00:20:35.50 to be the king's son in law?" 00:20:35.50\00:20:37.73 But then Saul got word, "Michal..." 00:20:37.73\00:20:39.93 I'm in verse 20. 00:20:39.93\00:20:41.10 Your daughter Michal, she is smitten by David. 00:20:41.10\00:20:44.81 And they told Saul and the thing pleased him. 00:20:44.81\00:20:46.74 He said, notice, it's verse 21, Saul said, 00:20:46.74\00:20:49.51 "I'll give her to him 00:20:49.51\00:20:51.31 that she might be a snare to him, 00:20:51.31\00:20:53.38 and that the hand of the Philistines 00:20:53.38\00:20:55.58 might be against him." 00:20:55.58\00:20:56.65 Well, it turns out Michal ended up 00:20:56.65\00:20:58.45 being a snare in many ways, 00:20:58.45\00:21:00.26 but he was hoping that his love for Michal 00:21:00.26\00:21:04.53 and her love for him 00:21:04.53\00:21:05.66 that he'd use the dowry of killing hundred Philistines 00:21:05.66\00:21:10.70 that David, you know, he'd be killed 00:21:10.70\00:21:12.60 in one of those battles and he'd never do it. 00:21:12.60\00:21:14.97 "Saul said to David the second time, 00:21:14.97\00:21:16.71 'You're to be my son-in-law today.' 00:21:16.71\00:21:19.01 And Saul commanded his servants, 00:21:19.01\00:21:20.44 'Communicate with David secretly, 00:21:20.44\00:21:21.81 say him, 'Look, the king delights in you 00:21:21.81\00:21:24.21 and His servants love you. 00:21:24.21\00:21:25.51 Now therefore go 00:21:25.51\00:21:26.58 and become the king's son-in-law."' 00:21:26.58\00:21:28.62 So they told David that. 00:21:28.62\00:21:30.19 And so David said, "All right, well, if you insist 00:21:30.19\00:21:32.79 but that just doesn't seem right 00:21:32.79\00:21:34.29 that I should only kill 100 Philistines, 00:21:34.29\00:21:36.62 I'll kill 200." 00:21:36.62\00:21:38.93 So David goes out and he doubles it. 00:21:38.93\00:21:41.83 You know, when you loved your firstborn, 00:21:41.83\00:21:44.20 you give a double portion, 00:21:44.20\00:21:46.43 when Elkanah loved Hannah, he gave a double portion. 00:21:46.43\00:21:51.51 Bible says, Elisha said to Elijah, 00:21:51.51\00:21:53.44 "If you love me, give me a double portion." 00:21:53.44\00:21:57.11 And so David said, "I won't kill 100 Philistines, 00:21:57.11\00:22:00.42 I'll kill 200" 00:22:00.42\00:22:01.85 and he did, and he brought the evidence. 00:22:01.85\00:22:05.72 And Saul is mystified because everything he's doing, 00:22:05.72\00:22:09.12 all these plots are backfiring, 00:22:09.12\00:22:10.79 and he's getting madder and madder, 00:22:10.79\00:22:12.26 he's trying to pretend he likes David 00:22:12.26\00:22:13.73 but inwardly he hates him, 00:22:13.73\00:22:15.53 he's very jealous, very peevish and small. 00:22:15.53\00:22:20.57 And so Saul knew that the Lord was with David, 00:22:20.57\00:22:23.64 and then Michal Saul's daughter loved him, 00:22:23.64\00:22:25.94 so he got someone else that loves him, 00:22:25.94\00:22:28.11 and Saul was more afraid of David. 00:22:28.11\00:22:31.01 So Saul, I am in verse 29 of chapter 18, 00:22:31.01\00:22:33.98 we're about done with this chapter. 00:22:33.98\00:22:35.78 "Saul became David's enemy continually." 00:22:35.78\00:22:40.99 Not good to have the king as your enemy. 00:22:40.99\00:22:43.16 Now you're gonna see from this point on 00:22:43.16\00:22:44.99 David begins to go through a series of trials, 00:22:44.99\00:22:49.03 and you might be wondering 00:22:49.03\00:22:50.10 why is all this happening to David. 00:22:50.10\00:22:52.03 Didn't God have a big plan for David's life? 00:22:52.03\00:22:54.47 Why is he going through all this hardship? 00:22:54.47\00:22:57.21 I thought he was gonna be anointed king 00:22:57.21\00:22:59.01 and suddenly sit on the front throne, 00:22:59.01\00:23:00.54 be surrounded with gold and everybody obeying Him. 00:23:00.54\00:23:03.55 But David goes from being filled with the spirit 00:23:03.55\00:23:06.35 to all kinds of trials. 00:23:06.35\00:23:09.32 Now don't forget that 00:23:09.32\00:23:10.92 because you go through trials and life gets messy 00:23:10.92\00:23:15.12 and you've got challenges 00:23:15.12\00:23:16.46 in all kinds of different areas, 00:23:16.46\00:23:18.06 does not mean God does not have a plan for you. 00:23:18.06\00:23:20.73 Sometimes the Lord allows you 00:23:20.73\00:23:22.40 to go through a whole spectrum of trials 00:23:22.40\00:23:25.90 'cause he's preparing you to live and reign with Him. 00:23:25.90\00:23:30.47 God through the trials was preparing David 00:23:30.47\00:23:33.48 to be a king. 00:23:33.48\00:23:35.11 Why did Joseph go through all of his trials? 00:23:35.11\00:23:38.38 God was preparing him to lead for many years 00:23:38.38\00:23:41.75 but, you know, you learn leadership through service. 00:23:41.75\00:23:44.89 And David was being prepared through these trials. 00:23:44.89\00:23:48.19 Verse 30, "Then the princes of the Philistines 00:23:48.19\00:23:50.86 went out to war. 00:23:50.86\00:23:51.93 And so it was, whenever they went out, 00:23:51.93\00:23:54.40 that David behaved more wisely..." 00:23:54.40\00:23:56.60 You noticing the pattern. 00:23:56.60\00:23:57.97 "Than all the servants of Saul, 00:23:57.97\00:23:59.83 so his name became highly esteemed." 00:23:59.83\00:24:02.54 Wherever they went out into battle, 00:24:02.54\00:24:04.81 David would always have the best battle plan, 00:24:04.81\00:24:08.64 his troops would be victorious, they were always the ones 00:24:08.64\00:24:11.45 that were blowing the trumpet, 00:24:11.45\00:24:12.78 coming to the rescue of everybody else, 00:24:12.78\00:24:14.72 they went down mowing down the enemy 00:24:14.72\00:24:17.42 and the morale of his group, his team was very great. 00:24:17.42\00:24:22.02 So Saul spoke to Jonathan, his son, chapter 19, verse 1, 00:24:22.02\00:24:26.53 "That they should kill David. 00:24:26.53\00:24:28.16 But Jonathan, Saul's son, delighted greatly in David." 00:24:28.16\00:24:31.10 You notice that Jonathan is interceding with the king 00:24:31.10\00:24:34.44 for David, again another Christ like attribute, 00:24:34.44\00:24:37.64 now that the father wants to kill you, 00:24:37.64\00:24:39.47 but it's like against judgment. 00:24:39.47\00:24:42.18 "And Jonathan told David saying, 00:24:42.18\00:24:43.45 'Look, my father wants to kill you. 00:24:43.45\00:24:45.11 Therefore please be on your guard until morning, 00:24:45.11\00:24:47.62 stay in a secret place and hide." 00:24:47.62\00:24:49.18 You go on this field, they assigned a place. 00:24:49.18\00:24:50.89 He said, I'm gonna walk out of the field, 00:24:50.89\00:24:52.15 and I'll talk to my dad, you'll be able to listen, 00:24:52.15\00:24:55.42 and I'll stand in the field and I'll talk to him. 00:24:55.42\00:24:58.13 "Thus Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father, 00:24:58.13\00:25:01.40 and said to him, 00:25:01.40\00:25:02.66 'Let not the king sin against his servant, David, 00:25:02.66\00:25:05.23 because he has not sinned against you, 00:25:05.23\00:25:07.27 because his works have been very good. 00:25:07.27\00:25:09.27 Jonathan waited till Saul was in a good mood, 00:25:09.27\00:25:11.37 he wasn't having the evil spirit, 00:25:11.37\00:25:12.81 he could reason with him. 00:25:12.81\00:25:14.61 "For he took his life in his hand 00:25:14.61\00:25:16.48 and he killed the Philistine, 00:25:16.48\00:25:17.55 and the Lord brought about 00:25:17.55\00:25:18.65 a great deliverance for all of Israel. 00:25:18.65\00:25:20.68 You saw, then you rejoiced. 00:25:20.68\00:25:23.05 Why will you then sin against innocent blood?" 00:25:23.05\00:25:26.82 What did Pilate say 00:25:26.82\00:25:27.92 when they wanted to execute Jesus? 00:25:27.92\00:25:30.83 I don't want to be guilty 00:25:30.83\00:25:31.86 against this man's innocent blood. 00:25:31.86\00:25:34.20 Why will you sin against innocent blood 00:25:34.20\00:25:35.83 to kill David without a cause? 00:25:35.83\00:25:38.37 You know, Saul had not totally grieved away the spirit 00:25:38.37\00:25:40.57 and the spirit reason with him at this point, 00:25:40.57\00:25:42.87 and he listen to the voice of Jonathan. 00:25:42.87\00:25:45.24 And Saul swore, he made a vow, by the way this vow came true. 00:25:45.24\00:25:48.71 "As the Lord lives, he will not be killed." 00:25:48.71\00:25:52.51 You know, that Saul made another vow 00:25:52.51\00:25:54.58 that his son Jonathan would die, 00:25:54.58\00:25:57.35 and Jonathan did die a violent death 00:25:57.35\00:25:59.69 and David did not. 00:25:59.69\00:26:01.59 It's interesting, Saul was a prophet 00:26:01.59\00:26:03.56 and Bible says that. 00:26:03.56\00:26:05.56 "And Jonathan called David, 00:26:05.56\00:26:07.76 and Jonathan told him all these things." 00:26:07.76\00:26:09.30 He said, "Look, he's calmed down, he's okay, 00:26:09.30\00:26:11.43 you can go back." 00:26:11.43\00:26:13.00 "And Jonathan brought David to Saul 00:26:13.00\00:26:14.87 as he was in the past, 00:26:14.87\00:26:16.04 and in his presence in past times. 00:26:16.04\00:26:19.37 And there was war again. 00:26:19.37\00:26:20.44 And David went out 00:26:20.44\00:26:21.51 and he fought with the Philistines, 00:26:21.51\00:26:22.58 and he struck them with a mighty blow, 00:26:22.58\00:26:23.91 and they fled from him. 00:26:23.91\00:26:25.68 And now the distressing spirit of the Lord 00:26:25.68\00:26:27.92 came upon Saul as he sat in his house, 00:26:27.92\00:26:29.85 his spear in his hand. 00:26:29.85\00:26:31.52 And David was playing music." 00:26:31.52\00:26:33.12 Now if I were David, I would have thought, 00:26:33.12\00:26:34.39 you know, 00:26:34.39\00:26:35.59 "Your Majesty, can you please put the spear now 00:26:35.59\00:26:37.66 and I'll play for you." 00:26:37.66\00:26:39.56 You've already once tried to shish kebab me. 00:26:39.56\00:26:43.30 We don't want you to, you know, just have a flinch, 00:26:43.30\00:26:47.10 ill-temper and... 00:26:47.10\00:26:48.94 But he is playing, now, do you think David was relaxed? 00:26:48.94\00:26:53.38 He's probably missing a few notes 00:26:53.38\00:26:55.98 and Saul is scowling at him 00:26:55.98\00:26:58.11 and he is tightening and losing his grip 00:26:58.11\00:27:00.38 on his spear. 00:27:00.38\00:27:01.45 Every time Saul shifted, 00:27:01.45\00:27:02.52 David would miss a note, you know, 00:27:02.52\00:27:05.09 'cause this didn't go well last time, 00:27:05.09\00:27:07.66 and this was the second time. 00:27:07.66\00:27:09.99 And again, he's playing music. 00:27:09.99\00:27:12.09 "And Saul sought to pin David to the wall with the spear, 00:27:12.09\00:27:16.33 but he slipped away from Saul's presence. 00:27:16.33\00:27:19.03 And he drove the spear into the wall." 00:27:19.03\00:27:21.04 Saul's pretty big and strong and that would have hurt. 00:27:21.04\00:27:24.11 "And he fled and he escaped that night. 00:27:24.11\00:27:27.24 Saul also sent messengers to David's house to watch him 00:27:27.24\00:27:30.25 and to kill him in the morning." 00:27:30.25\00:27:31.75 Now he's got assassins, 00:27:31.75\00:27:34.28 they're stalking his house to kill him. 00:27:34.28\00:27:37.52 "And Michal, David's wife, told him, saying, 00:27:37.52\00:27:39.42 'If you don't save your life tonight, 00:27:39.42\00:27:41.06 tomorrow you will be killed.' 00:27:41.06\00:27:43.36 So Michael let David down through a window. 00:27:43.36\00:27:46.70 And he fled and escaped." 00:27:46.70\00:27:48.30 It's not the first time that God's servants 00:27:48.30\00:27:50.70 been let down a window by a woman. 00:27:50.70\00:27:53.44 Remember the story of Rahab? 00:27:53.44\00:27:56.10 You remember when Paul was in Damascus 00:27:56.10\00:27:58.01 and they had spies waiting to kill Paul? 00:27:58.01\00:28:00.74 And he was let down through a window, 00:28:00.74\00:28:02.74 they let him down in a basket and he escaped. 00:28:02.74\00:28:07.18 "And Michal put an image and laid it in the bed..." 00:28:07.18\00:28:09.28 And everyone says, "Pastor Doug, 00:28:09.28\00:28:10.42 what was an image doing in David's house?" 00:28:10.42\00:28:13.52 Well, they did have statues back then 00:28:13.52\00:28:16.56 and that's simply what it's saying, 00:28:16.56\00:28:17.73 the Bible doesn't say, don't have any work of art, 00:28:17.73\00:28:20.13 it says, don't make them and bow down to them. 00:28:20.13\00:28:21.80 So for whatever reason they had something 00:28:21.80\00:28:24.17 that looked like a body or person 00:28:24.17\00:28:26.77 or figure of some sort. 00:28:26.77\00:28:28.17 They stuck it under the blanket, 00:28:28.17\00:28:31.04 and they took some red goatskin, 00:28:31.04\00:28:33.51 the same color as David's hair, and they put it there 00:28:33.51\00:28:35.51 and made it look like he was in the bed. 00:28:35.51\00:28:36.78 They were hoping, they'd look and say, 00:28:36.78\00:28:37.85 look, he's sick let's leave him alone. 00:28:37.85\00:28:40.78 "So Saul's messengers got the word, he is sick. 00:28:40.78\00:28:43.05 And Saul said to the messengers, 00:28:43.05\00:28:44.12 'Bring David back, 00:28:44.12\00:28:45.75 bring him in the bed that I might kill him.' 00:28:45.75\00:28:47.89 They come in, there was the image in the bed, 00:28:47.89\00:28:49.76 and the goat's hair for his head. 00:28:49.76\00:28:52.16 And Saul said to Michal, 00:28:52.16\00:28:53.76 'Why have you deceived me like this, 00:28:53.76\00:28:55.73 and you let my enemy go away.'" 00:28:55.73\00:28:57.83 She was probably thinking your enemy, 00:28:57.83\00:28:59.27 you're the one that told me to marry him. 00:28:59.27\00:29:02.04 "And Michal answered, he said, 'Let me go! 00:29:02.04\00:29:03.87 Why should I kill you?'" 00:29:03.87\00:29:05.47 It's a fib. 00:29:05.47\00:29:06.81 You'll see that there's some dishonesty 00:29:06.81\00:29:08.24 that is uttered during this whole thing. 00:29:08.24\00:29:10.05 "So David fled and escaped." 00:29:10.05\00:29:11.35 Now I want you to notice 00:29:11.35\00:29:12.38 what's going on here as we proceed. 00:29:12.38\00:29:14.85 First, he's got a true friend in Jonathan, 00:29:14.85\00:29:17.89 and Jonathan prepares 00:29:17.89\00:29:19.39 and then gives him his armor and sword 00:29:19.39\00:29:20.92 and watches over him. 00:29:20.92\00:29:23.06 And the Bible says, 00:29:23.06\00:29:24.16 "There's a friend that sticks better than a brother. 00:29:24.16\00:29:26.96 He's long as he know, he starts out with a friend, 00:29:26.96\00:29:29.40 Jonathan sees his friend through the whole ordeal 00:29:29.40\00:29:32.77 and he encourages them through the whole thing. 00:29:32.77\00:29:34.70 Do we have a friend in Jesus? 00:29:34.70\00:29:36.30 So then he loses his job. 00:29:39.34\00:29:40.68 You know, one of the hardest things 00:29:40.68\00:29:41.71 that can happen to a man is lose his job. 00:29:41.71\00:29:43.48 David had been in the palace and he's kicked out. 00:29:43.48\00:29:46.72 He says, now I want you to go be a captain. 00:29:46.72\00:29:49.25 And, you know, what's happening 00:29:49.25\00:29:50.45 with these jealous feelings of Saul, 00:29:50.45\00:29:52.39 Saul was not fighting against David. 00:29:52.39\00:29:54.46 Who is Saul really fighting against? 00:29:54.46\00:29:57.43 He's fighting against Jehovah. 00:29:57.43\00:29:59.96 Because he's grieved away the spirit, 00:29:59.96\00:30:01.70 he sees the spirit is in David, 00:30:01.70\00:30:03.93 he's trying to just destroy David 00:30:03.93\00:30:06.90 because God had said 00:30:06.90\00:30:08.30 through His word and His prophet, 00:30:08.30\00:30:10.27 someone else is gonna replace you, 00:30:10.27\00:30:11.71 and he's trying to stop it from happening. 00:30:11.71\00:30:13.84 He should have just surrendered to it. 00:30:13.84\00:30:15.98 And then he gets to marry the princes 00:30:15.98\00:30:17.71 and you'll think, you think that's a good thing. 00:30:17.71\00:30:20.72 But no, Saul tries to do that 00:30:20.72\00:30:22.25 hoping that he'll die trying to pay the dowry, 00:30:22.25\00:30:25.09 and then he sends his assassins to David's house 00:30:25.09\00:30:28.09 where Michal is to kill him. 00:30:28.09\00:30:29.89 You know, during that time, David actually wrote a psalm, 00:30:29.89\00:30:32.36 while he's going through his trials 00:30:32.36\00:30:33.83 and I don't have time. 00:30:33.83\00:30:35.06 But if you read through the Psalms, 00:30:35.06\00:30:36.46 you're going to find is, this is a psalm 00:30:36.46\00:30:38.37 that David wrote when this happened. 00:30:38.37\00:30:40.07 This is a psalm David wrote when this happened. 00:30:40.07\00:30:42.30 David actually wrote a psalm 00:30:42.30\00:30:43.94 when he sent assassins to kill him at the house, 00:30:43.94\00:30:48.38 and you find that in Psalm 59. 00:30:48.38\00:30:50.71 I'm just gonna read a few verses of that. 00:30:50.71\00:30:53.15 I want to feel like composing music, 00:30:53.15\00:30:55.08 but David found great comfort in that. 00:30:55.08\00:30:57.79 Psalm 59, I'll read verse, you know, just 1 and 3. 00:30:57.79\00:31:01.16 "Deliver me from my enemies, O God. 00:31:01.16\00:31:03.22 Defend me from those who rise up against me. 00:31:03.22\00:31:05.76 Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, 00:31:05.76\00:31:07.93 and save me from bloodthirsty men. 00:31:07.93\00:31:10.27 For they look, they lie and wait for my life." 00:31:10.27\00:31:13.94 There they were at his house lying in wait, 00:31:13.94\00:31:16.07 he's outlining what happened. 00:31:16.07\00:31:17.41 "The mighty gathered against me..." 00:31:17.41\00:31:18.77 The king was against me. 00:31:18.77\00:31:20.54 "Not for my transgression nor for my sin, O Lord." 00:31:20.54\00:31:24.28 I don't deserve this and they're trying to kill me, 00:31:24.28\00:31:26.28 they're lying in wait. 00:31:26.28\00:31:27.82 So as you look in the Psalms, 00:31:27.82\00:31:29.52 pay attention to some of those introductions 00:31:29.52\00:31:32.05 and you'll see that David wrote some of these 00:31:32.05\00:31:34.02 during times of great trial. 00:31:34.02\00:31:36.16 Isn't it interesting 00:31:36.16\00:31:37.29 how much beautiful music has been written 00:31:37.29\00:31:40.03 during times of great trial, 00:31:40.03\00:31:42.50 and so he wrote that when he fled. 00:31:42.50\00:31:44.90 Now it tells us if you go to chapter 19, verse 18. 00:31:44.90\00:31:49.14 Where does he go? 00:31:49.14\00:31:51.07 He's ended up on the most wanted list. 00:31:51.07\00:31:54.31 David now flees to Samuel. 00:31:54.31\00:31:57.15 And this is natural, 00:31:57.15\00:31:59.11 Samuel had been his spiritual mentor. 00:31:59.11\00:32:01.58 He's thinking, I'm gonna die before I ever become king, 00:32:01.58\00:32:03.59 I just like some reassurance, 00:32:03.59\00:32:04.89 you are anointing me to be king? 00:32:04.89\00:32:06.82 Doesn't look like I'm a king. 00:32:06.82\00:32:07.99 I'm running for my life right now. 00:32:07.99\00:32:10.36 And so he gets some encouragement from Samuel, 00:32:10.36\00:32:12.96 but pretty soon word came to King Saul, 00:32:12.96\00:32:15.10 that David was with Samuel and up in Naioth. 00:32:15.10\00:32:20.57 That was a town nearby to Ramah where Samuel lived. 00:32:20.57\00:32:24.91 So what does Saul do? 00:32:24.91\00:32:26.94 Stubborn sends his soldiers to arrest David. 00:32:26.94\00:32:32.15 But when his soldiers come to arrest him, 00:32:32.15\00:32:33.92 Samuel is out preaching with the sons of the prophets, 00:32:33.92\00:32:36.08 and they're prophesying to the people. 00:32:36.08\00:32:38.52 The sheriff from Saul come to arrest David, 00:32:38.52\00:32:43.02 and the Spirit of the Lord comes on them 00:32:43.02\00:32:44.06 and they start to preach. 00:32:44.06\00:32:46.59 And Saul is waiting and waiting, 00:32:46.59\00:32:48.23 said, "Why, what's taking them so long." 00:32:48.23\00:32:50.90 Sends some more to arrest David, 00:32:50.90\00:32:54.27 bring him back so I can kill him. 00:32:54.27\00:32:56.14 Another contingent goes out to arrest David, 00:32:56.14\00:32:58.41 and when they come into the presence of Samuel, 00:32:58.41\00:33:00.58 the Holy Spirit comes on them, 00:33:00.58\00:33:02.38 and they begin to preach and teach. 00:33:02.38\00:33:05.68 And Saul says, "Where are they? What's taking them so long?" 00:33:05.68\00:33:09.42 Send another group because Saul is just south of 00:33:09.42\00:33:12.19 where Samuel is, they're not that far away. 00:33:12.19\00:33:14.26 He sends another group. What happened to them? 00:33:14.26\00:33:17.06 Well, looks like the Holy Spirit came on them 00:33:17.06\00:33:18.46 and there they're preaching 00:33:18.46\00:33:19.49 and teaching along with the rest. 00:33:19.49\00:33:22.13 Finally, Saul can't stand, 00:33:22.13\00:33:23.37 he said, "Well, if you want something done right, 00:33:23.37\00:33:25.23 you do it yourself." 00:33:25.23\00:33:26.27 Says, "I'll go, I'll get him." 00:33:26.27\00:33:28.47 So he arms himself to the teeth. 00:33:28.47\00:33:30.11 He goes up there, he comes to Naioth, 00:33:30.11\00:33:31.94 where Samuel is and all the prophets 00:33:31.94\00:33:34.14 and the people and they're teaching. 00:33:34.14\00:33:36.34 And the Bible says, "The Holy Spirit came on Saul." 00:33:36.34\00:33:39.88 Can the Holy Spirit even come on a person against their will? 00:33:39.88\00:33:43.25 When Balaam wanted to curse God's people, 00:33:43.25\00:33:46.02 and God said, you can't curse them 00:33:46.02\00:33:47.29 because I blessed them. 00:33:47.29\00:33:48.42 The Holy Spirit came on Balaam, and against his will, 00:33:48.42\00:33:50.49 he had to utter a blessing. 00:33:50.49\00:33:54.00 And pretty soon, he runs out of energy 00:33:54.00\00:33:59.43 and Saul, he starts to prophesy and preach 00:33:59.43\00:34:02.40 and takes off his clothes and lies down naked, 00:34:02.40\00:34:06.44 and then he prophesies until sundown. 00:34:06.44\00:34:08.41 You can't fight against God. 00:34:08.41\00:34:11.21 So now he has to leave Samuel. 00:34:11.21\00:34:13.31 He says, well, Saul knows where I'm at, 00:34:13.31\00:34:14.62 this won't work forever. 00:34:14.62\00:34:16.32 David flees again, he goes back to Jonathan. 00:34:16.32\00:34:19.45 And most of chapter 20 is talking about 00:34:19.45\00:34:22.46 where Jonathan tries to intercede with his father. 00:34:22.46\00:34:26.09 And David says, "You didn't realize 00:34:26.09\00:34:27.96 that your father tried to kill me 00:34:27.96\00:34:29.66 in your sister's house," 00:34:29.66\00:34:31.27 David is telling Jonathan. 00:34:31.27\00:34:33.00 "So then your father sent soldiers to arrest me, 00:34:33.00\00:34:35.30 when I was up seeing Samuel. 00:34:35.30\00:34:36.64 He's trying to kill me." 00:34:36.64\00:34:37.94 Jonathan says, "No, he promised me, 00:34:37.94\00:34:39.17 he swore it wouldn't happen." 00:34:39.17\00:34:40.64 He said, "No, he's trying to kill me again. 00:34:40.64\00:34:43.21 He threw a spear at me again." 00:34:43.21\00:34:45.28 Jonathan said, "Look, let me talk to him again." 00:34:45.28\00:34:47.52 Said, "You hide out here in the field." 00:34:47.52\00:34:49.32 They set up another secret mission 00:34:49.32\00:34:51.59 'cause, you know, people in the quarter watching, 00:34:51.59\00:34:53.19 there are spies looking, 00:34:53.19\00:34:54.26 David is now hiding in the bushes. 00:34:54.26\00:34:57.69 And Jonathan said, "I'll go talk to my father." 00:34:57.69\00:35:00.46 He said, "Now is the feast of the new moon." 00:35:00.46\00:35:02.66 It's a new moon Sabbath. There will be a feast. 00:35:02.66\00:35:04.33 And all of the kings, counselors, 00:35:04.33\00:35:06.77 his cabinet will be gathered together, 00:35:06.77\00:35:08.34 they're all there and he said, 00:35:08.34\00:35:11.31 "I'll ask him then in front of everybody." 00:35:11.31\00:35:14.38 And so then after the second or third day, 00:35:14.38\00:35:16.54 and David is not in his seat, 00:35:16.54\00:35:18.05 he's one of the king's captains, 00:35:18.05\00:35:19.15 he's supposed to be there. 00:35:19.15\00:35:20.65 Saul says to Jonathan, he knows they're friends. 00:35:20.65\00:35:23.69 Said, "Where is the son of Jesse?" 00:35:23.69\00:35:26.49 "Oh, dad, David asked if he could go to Bethlehem 00:35:26.49\00:35:30.23 because his family was having a special sacrifice 00:35:30.23\00:35:32.09 for the new moon, 00:35:32.09\00:35:33.16 and I told him it would be okay, 00:35:33.16\00:35:34.56 I knew you were busy." 00:35:34.56\00:35:36.43 Saul threw, went into a fit. 00:35:36.43\00:35:40.47 He says, "Don't you know if David is not dead 00:35:40.47\00:35:44.14 that you will never be crowned prince? 00:35:44.14\00:35:47.04 So you're doing this against you 00:35:47.04\00:35:48.41 and he begins to curse that his son, 00:35:48.41\00:35:51.25 says stuff about Jonathan's mother. 00:35:51.25\00:35:53.11 I mean, Saul just comes unhinged. 00:35:53.11\00:35:56.02 And Jonathan becomes outraged, 00:35:56.02\00:35:58.05 he says, "Why are you trying to kill him? 00:35:58.05\00:36:00.16 He has done nothing but good, the people love him, 00:36:00.16\00:36:02.32 everyone loves him." 00:36:02.32\00:36:03.56 And that really bothered Saul. 00:36:03.56\00:36:05.43 Saul now throws a spear at his own son 00:36:05.43\00:36:10.07 and he misses. 00:36:10.07\00:36:11.10 He does not have a very good aim 00:36:11.10\00:36:12.30 evidently with his spear. 00:36:12.30\00:36:15.47 And Jonathan goes out mad 00:36:15.47\00:36:16.84 and he meets David in the field, 00:36:16.84\00:36:18.61 and he embraces and he says, you're right. 00:36:18.61\00:36:20.78 He said, he is bent on killing you 00:36:20.78\00:36:22.54 and I can't reason with him, he's lost his mind, 00:36:22.54\00:36:25.11 he tried to spear me. 00:36:25.11\00:36:27.75 And so now he has to flee from his friend. 00:36:27.75\00:36:31.89 So you notice what's happening? 00:36:31.89\00:36:33.76 He's losing his position, he loses his wife, 00:36:33.76\00:36:37.09 he loses his home, he loses his friend. 00:36:37.09\00:36:41.30 He's separated from Samuel, 00:36:41.30\00:36:42.63 that was the last time he saw Samuel. 00:36:42.63\00:36:44.33 Samuel ends up dying by chapter 25. 00:36:44.33\00:36:48.24 He now says, "Where do I go?" 00:36:48.24\00:36:49.74 When you're losing everybody, he goes to the house of God. 00:36:49.74\00:36:53.27 Now the temple has not been built yet, 00:36:53.27\00:36:54.84 they are still operating out of a very tattered tabernacle. 00:36:54.84\00:36:59.41 And so he goes to Nob where the priest is. 00:36:59.41\00:37:01.68 I think I even have a map up on the wall 00:37:01.68\00:37:03.82 that you'll see there. 00:37:03.82\00:37:05.22 And David flees from Nob, later he goes to, 00:37:05.22\00:37:08.59 you can see where Gibeah is and Ramah 00:37:08.59\00:37:10.93 at the north of the map there is where Samuel was, 00:37:10.93\00:37:13.90 Gibeah is where Saul had his kingdom at that time. 00:37:13.90\00:37:16.67 He goes down south on the right, 00:37:16.67\00:37:18.27 there you'll see is Nob, 00:37:18.27\00:37:19.73 that's where the tabernacle was. 00:37:19.73\00:37:21.67 And he goes to Ahimelech there who is the high priest. 00:37:21.67\00:37:25.24 And when he saw David, he was scared. 00:37:25.24\00:37:27.64 He says, "How come you're alone and nobody is with you," 00:37:27.64\00:37:30.25 'cause they'd heard about Saul going after David. 00:37:30.25\00:37:34.62 And he said, "I'm on some urgent business for the king, 00:37:34.62\00:37:36.58 everything's okay." 00:37:36.58\00:37:37.65 David begins to tell stories. 00:37:37.65\00:37:41.49 I'm in chapter 21, verse 1. Thank you. 00:37:41.49\00:37:44.49 And he said, "I need some food, do you have any provisions?" 00:37:44.49\00:37:48.93 And there's the only bread here is holy bread. 00:37:48.93\00:37:51.77 He said, "That will work." 00:37:51.77\00:37:53.37 By the way, do you know David... 00:37:53.37\00:37:54.60 Jesus refers to this experience, 00:37:54.60\00:37:56.64 Matthew 12, Jesus said, "How do you not read 00:37:56.64\00:37:59.84 what David did when he was hungry 00:37:59.84\00:38:01.34 and those who are with him?" 00:38:01.34\00:38:02.34 He had a small group of men with him. 00:38:02.34\00:38:04.35 "How he entered the house of God 00:38:04.35\00:38:05.98 and ate the showbread, 00:38:05.98\00:38:07.58 that was not lawful for him to eat 00:38:07.58\00:38:09.32 nor those who were with him, but only for the priests. 00:38:09.32\00:38:12.32 But since it had served its course 00:38:12.32\00:38:13.72 and they took it out, 00:38:13.72\00:38:14.99 they were now gonna replace it with fresh bread. 00:38:14.99\00:38:16.66 They said, you can eat this and they gave David the bread, 00:38:16.66\00:38:18.66 the holy bread was given to David. 00:38:18.66\00:38:20.63 And he said, "Do you have any weapons here?" 00:38:20.63\00:38:22.83 And he said, "This is the temple." 00:38:22.83\00:38:24.83 He said, "You know, the only weapon 00:38:24.83\00:38:26.00 we've got here is we've got the relic 00:38:26.00\00:38:28.77 that you gave us, it's the sword, 00:38:28.77\00:38:30.61 it's the sword of Goliath that you gave us." 00:38:30.61\00:38:33.61 David said, "Oh, there's no sword like that, 00:38:33.61\00:38:34.94 let me have it." 00:38:34.94\00:38:36.78 So he ends up coming to the house of God, 00:38:36.78\00:38:38.41 and what does he get? 00:38:38.41\00:38:39.58 He gets holy bread and he gets a sword. 00:38:39.58\00:38:42.58 I hope you friends can find holy bread 00:38:42.58\00:38:44.52 and the sword when you come to the house of God. 00:38:44.52\00:38:46.86 What does that bread represent? 00:38:46.86\00:38:48.96 Man doesn't live by bread alone but by every word. 00:38:48.96\00:38:51.36 What does that sword represent? 00:38:51.36\00:38:52.99 The Word of God which is a two-edged sword, 00:38:52.99\00:38:55.23 he went to the house of God 00:38:55.23\00:38:57.70 and he got some encouragement there, 00:38:57.70\00:38:59.43 he was fed with holy bread, 00:38:59.43\00:39:01.90 and that's what we eat when we come to church, right. 00:39:01.90\00:39:04.31 He was fed with holy bread and he got a sword 00:39:04.31\00:39:06.27 but not like any other sword, 00:39:06.27\00:39:07.61 there was no sword like the sword of Goliath. 00:39:07.61\00:39:11.05 But, you know, that the high priest 00:39:11.05\00:39:12.71 because he had helped David, 00:39:12.71\00:39:15.32 he and his whole family 00:39:15.32\00:39:16.85 with the exception of Abimelech, one of his sons, 00:39:16.85\00:39:19.62 they were all later annihilated by Saul. 00:39:19.62\00:39:22.72 Saul became so angry, 00:39:22.72\00:39:24.66 he didn't care what means he used 00:39:24.66\00:39:26.59 or how many people were killed, 00:39:26.59\00:39:28.33 if he could just get rid of David. 00:39:28.33\00:39:30.63 Why does the devil hate people so much? 00:39:30.63\00:39:34.64 Because the devil, Satan, Lucifer hates Jesus, 00:39:34.64\00:39:38.74 the Son of David. 00:39:38.74\00:39:39.97 And most of the pain 00:39:39.97\00:39:41.78 and the suffering you see in the world today is not 00:39:41.78\00:39:43.68 'cause the devil cares that much about you, 00:39:43.68\00:39:45.78 but he wants to do what he can to hurt Jesus. 00:39:45.78\00:39:49.38 It's all about destroying Jesus, 00:39:49.38\00:39:50.75 it's all about hurting Jesus, 00:39:50.75\00:39:52.45 and that's why he then sown his wrath against the devil, 00:39:52.45\00:39:55.99 against you and me. 00:39:55.99\00:39:59.09 And so he now has to leave the house of God. 00:39:59.09\00:40:04.00 You notice something else about David, 00:40:04.00\00:40:05.60 his problem was never so much the enemy on the outside 00:40:05.60\00:40:08.67 as the enemy within. 00:40:08.67\00:40:10.61 David always was able to kill the Philistines, 00:40:10.61\00:40:12.87 but boy, he had a lot of problems 00:40:12.87\00:40:14.38 from people in the kingdom. 00:40:14.38\00:40:17.08 Now David is, he leaves the house of God 00:40:17.08\00:40:19.58 and he is so discouraged. 00:40:19.58\00:40:20.88 Where does he turn? 00:40:20.88\00:40:22.58 He now flees to his enemy. 00:40:22.58\00:40:24.92 You've probably heard the expression before, 00:40:24.92\00:40:27.62 "My enemy's enemy is my friend." 00:40:27.62\00:40:31.46 And he knew that the Philistines hated Saul 00:40:31.46\00:40:34.73 and Saul now hates David, 00:40:34.73\00:40:36.53 he figures maybe if I go to the Philistines, 00:40:36.53\00:40:38.60 they'll protect me. 00:40:38.60\00:40:41.44 And this is in chapter, 00:40:41.44\00:40:42.57 I'm actually in chapter 21, verse 10. 00:40:42.57\00:40:46.71 "David arose and he fled that day from before Saul, 00:40:46.71\00:40:49.74 and he went to Achish the king of Gath." 00:40:49.74\00:40:52.45 What? 00:40:52.45\00:40:53.92 King of where? 00:40:53.92\00:40:56.38 King of where? Gath. 00:40:56.38\00:40:58.65 Have you heard that word Gath before? 00:40:58.65\00:41:02.06 Who's from Gath? Who is the hero in Gath? 00:41:02.06\00:41:05.56 David is so troubled right now, 00:41:05.56\00:41:09.03 he is so down, he's not thinking clearly. 00:41:09.03\00:41:11.80 He goes walking up the streets of Gath, 00:41:11.80\00:41:13.97 he and a handful of men with him 00:41:13.97\00:41:15.57 that stuck with him. 00:41:15.57\00:41:16.94 And on his side, he's got the sword of Goliath. 00:41:16.94\00:41:22.04 And he comes to the king and he's looking for haven. 00:41:22.04\00:41:26.68 And the king is going, he says to his cabinet, 00:41:26.68\00:41:32.85 he's applying for asylum? 00:41:32.85\00:41:35.56 He isn't the one, this is the one that said, 00:41:35.56\00:41:39.06 Saul killed us thousand, but David ten thousand, 00:41:39.06\00:41:41.50 ten thousand who? 00:41:41.50\00:41:42.80 Ten thousand of us, 00:41:42.80\00:41:44.57 and we're supposed to take care of him 00:41:44.57\00:41:45.93 and he's wearing Goliath sword. 00:41:45.93\00:41:47.74 And David starts to hear that it's not gonna end well 00:41:47.74\00:41:51.94 and, you know, what he does? 00:41:51.94\00:41:53.14 He's pretty clever, he wasn't honest. 00:41:53.14\00:41:56.11 He says, "I better act like I'm crazy, 00:41:56.11\00:41:58.55 so they'll have pity on me." 00:41:58.55\00:41:59.65 And he begins to drool on his beard, 00:41:59.65\00:42:02.55 and start looking wild eye and acts like he's crazy, 00:42:02.55\00:42:05.65 and he starts to scratch on the gates. 00:42:05.65\00:42:07.96 And the king says, "He's crazy." 00:42:07.96\00:42:11.76 I don't have enough going on, you bring me someone insane. 00:42:11.76\00:42:14.83 I haven't got time to have an insane person in my house, 00:42:14.83\00:42:16.90 get him out of here, 00:42:16.90\00:42:18.00 that's exactly what David wanted to hear. 00:42:18.00\00:42:20.40 Instead of killing him, he pities him, 00:42:20.40\00:42:22.54 and he says get him out of Gath. 00:42:22.54\00:42:25.64 I don't want him here. 00:42:25.64\00:42:27.44 So he's now gone, 00:42:27.44\00:42:29.44 he's getting rejected by his enemies. 00:42:29.44\00:42:33.52 You wonder how much further down can he go. 00:42:33.52\00:42:37.52 You know David wrote a Psalm, Psalm 34:1, 00:42:37.52\00:42:42.02 "A Psalm of David when he changed his behavior 00:42:42.02\00:42:44.73 before Abimelech, and he drove him away, 00:42:44.73\00:42:47.76 and he departed." 00:42:47.76\00:42:49.63 Have you read where it says, "The angel of the Lord," 00:42:49.63\00:42:51.67 and this is in Psalm 34. 00:42:51.67\00:42:53.60 "The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear him, 00:42:53.60\00:42:57.44 and delivers them." 00:42:57.44\00:42:59.57 Something else that David said in that Psalm 00:42:59.57\00:43:01.54 and you think it's a confession. 00:43:01.54\00:43:03.11 He says, "Keep your tongue from evil, 00:43:03.11\00:43:04.91 and your lips from speaking to see." 00:43:04.91\00:43:06.61 He said, "Lord, I know I lied and acted like I was crazy. 00:43:06.61\00:43:10.49 I got scared, I didn't know what to do. 00:43:10.49\00:43:12.05 It's like, it's a song that includes confession. 00:43:12.05\00:43:15.19 But you read the Psalms, it's telling about these trials 00:43:15.19\00:43:18.16 that David is going through. 00:43:18.16\00:43:19.89 And here we'll end up with this. 00:43:19.89\00:43:22.20 He get to chapter 22, 00:43:22.20\00:43:24.20 "Now David flees to the Cave of Adullam. 00:43:24.20\00:43:27.70 And I think on the screen here, we've got a picture 00:43:27.70\00:43:29.74 where someone tried to take a picture 00:43:29.74\00:43:31.67 inside the Cave of Adullam, it's still there today. 00:43:31.67\00:43:34.28 It used to be much bigger, but over the millennia, 00:43:34.28\00:43:36.91 we're talking about 3,000 years ago, 00:43:36.91\00:43:39.71 it had a little more space. 00:43:39.71\00:43:40.88 There's been, you know, some cave-ins 00:43:40.88\00:43:42.02 and water washes in and people used it overtime, 00:43:42.02\00:43:45.55 but there used to be a little more capacity in there, 00:43:45.55\00:43:47.79 you can still probably fit 100 people in the cave. 00:43:47.79\00:43:50.66 But that became his holdout, he ends up in the cave. 00:43:50.66\00:43:55.23 Now here's someone who when he got called 00:43:55.23\00:43:57.53 from the fields to the palace, 00:43:57.53\00:44:00.64 and he knew someday he was gonna be king, 00:44:00.64\00:44:02.17 it made sense to David 00:44:02.17\00:44:03.71 that you've got a big plan for my life, 00:44:03.71\00:44:05.07 I'm gonna be king, 00:44:05.07\00:44:06.14 it makes sense I should be here, 00:44:06.14\00:44:07.34 I'm gonna learn all I can in the palace. 00:44:07.34\00:44:10.05 But it didn't play out the way he had expected. 00:44:10.05\00:44:12.78 Now the king tries to kill him and he loses his wife, 00:44:12.78\00:44:16.28 he loses his home, he gets fired from the palace, 00:44:16.28\00:44:19.65 he's separated from his friend Jonathan, 00:44:19.65\00:44:23.63 he can't go back home to his family, 00:44:23.63\00:44:25.86 he's sort of an alien in his own nation. 00:44:25.86\00:44:28.63 On every telephone pole around Israel, 00:44:28.63\00:44:31.23 it says, top ten most wanted, 00:44:31.23\00:44:33.57 David was number one on the list. 00:44:33.57\00:44:35.67 The king is trying to kill him. 00:44:35.67\00:44:36.81 He's running for his life, 00:44:36.81\00:44:38.11 and he ends up in a dark wet moldy cave. 00:44:38.11\00:44:44.11 And later you can hear, David says, 00:44:44.11\00:44:46.35 the water wasn't very good there, 00:44:46.35\00:44:48.02 and he was yearning after the water of Bethlehem. 00:44:48.02\00:44:50.25 So he's drinking sulfur water and he's in a cave, 00:44:50.25\00:44:53.59 and he's in the dark, and he's now really, 00:44:53.59\00:44:55.59 he's got athlete's foot and everything is going bad. 00:44:55.59\00:44:57.66 And he thought I'm filled with the Spirit of the Lord, 00:44:57.66\00:44:58.93 why is this happening to me? 00:44:58.93\00:45:00.76 Sometimes the path to God's will for your life 00:45:02.93\00:45:06.20 is gonna take you through a lot of difficulty. 00:45:06.20\00:45:11.24 God was preparing David for usefulness and this... 00:45:11.24\00:45:16.68 So I'm telling you this, 00:45:16.68\00:45:18.08 because you may be going through that. 00:45:18.08\00:45:20.18 David actually was a great escape artist. 00:45:20.18\00:45:23.89 I wanted you, there's a word I didn't highlight, 00:45:23.89\00:45:25.92 I want you to notice. 00:45:25.92\00:45:27.22 It's the word "escape". 00:45:27.22\00:45:30.86 1 Samuel 18:11, 00:45:30.86\00:45:34.00 "David escaped the presence of Saul twice. 00:45:34.00\00:45:36.80 1 Samuel 22, "He escaped to the Cave of Adullam." 00:45:36.80\00:45:41.80 1 Samuel 19:12, 00:45:41.80\00:45:44.17 "He went and fled and escaped from Michal, 00:45:44.17\00:45:46.71 Michal's house." 00:45:46.71\00:45:48.71 1 Samuel 19:18, "David fled and escaped, 00:45:48.71\00:45:51.38 and he went to Samuel." 00:45:51.38\00:45:53.25 1 Samuel 27:1, 00:45:53.25\00:45:55.68 "David said, I'm better from dying 00:45:55.68\00:45:59.35 from the hand of the Lord to go with the Philistines, 00:45:59.35\00:46:01.36 I'll escape to the land of the Philistines." 00:46:01.36\00:46:04.93 And then of course, he ends up in the cave. 00:46:04.93\00:46:06.86 You know, Jesus was an escape artist too. 00:46:06.86\00:46:10.67 Bible says, John 10:39, 00:46:10.67\00:46:13.37 "Therefore they thought to arrest Jesus again," 00:46:13.37\00:46:15.94 What does again mean? 00:46:15.94\00:46:18.07 It had happened before, but he escaped. 00:46:18.07\00:46:22.01 The son of David was pretty good at that too. 00:46:22.01\00:46:24.28 He escaped from their hand. 00:46:24.28\00:46:27.02 You know what Adullam means, the cave of Adullam? 00:46:27.02\00:46:29.48 A sealed off place. 00:46:29.48\00:46:31.89 God brought David to a sealed off place, 00:46:31.89\00:46:34.09 and there things are gonna turn 00:46:34.09\00:46:36.19 from the cave on his circumstances turn. 00:46:36.19\00:46:40.23 From the cave on and we'll be dealing with this 00:46:40.23\00:46:42.00 in our next message. 00:46:42.00\00:46:44.10 An army begins to form, 00:46:44.10\00:46:46.43 and David's greatness begins to rise, 00:46:46.43\00:46:49.84 and his leadership and his experience, 00:46:49.84\00:46:51.71 but God had to bring him down into a cave. 00:46:51.71\00:46:55.14 Did God had to bring Elijah to a cave at one point? 00:46:55.14\00:46:58.68 Sometimes God's got to bring you 00:46:58.68\00:47:00.05 into a dark place before you can see the light. 00:47:00.05\00:47:04.19 From the cave, David wrote a Psalm, 00:47:04.19\00:47:07.06 you can read Psalm 142:7, 00:47:07.06\00:47:09.52 it's called the "Maskil of David", 00:47:09.52\00:47:11.79 a prayer when he was in the Cave of Adullam. 00:47:11.79\00:47:16.16 And I want to read a quote to you from the book Maranatha, 00:47:16.16\00:47:20.27 that wonderful devotional that talks about the last days. 00:47:20.27\00:47:22.84 Why am I emphasizing this? 00:47:22.84\00:47:26.07 David had lost every earthly support. 00:47:26.07\00:47:29.54 God was preparing David for greatness 00:47:29.54\00:47:32.48 by getting him to learn to fully depend on him. 00:47:32.48\00:47:36.38 The Lord was also telling David, 00:47:36.38\00:47:37.95 no matter where you go, 00:47:37.95\00:47:39.35 you might have to flee to Naioth, 00:47:39.35\00:47:41.79 then you might have to go to Gath, 00:47:41.79\00:47:43.02 you go to Adullam, 00:47:43.02\00:47:44.09 you go wherever you go, I am with you. 00:47:44.09\00:47:46.43 I will never leave you and forsake you. 00:47:46.43\00:47:48.13 God delivered him out of all of his troubles. 00:47:48.13\00:47:50.33 And here's that quote from Maranatha, page 181. 00:47:50.33\00:47:53.20 "In the last great conflict of the controversy with Satan 00:47:53.20\00:47:58.04 those who are loyal to God 00:47:58.04\00:48:00.51 will see every earthly support cut off. 00:48:00.51\00:48:05.01 Because they refuse to break His law 00:48:05.01\00:48:06.58 in obedience to earthly powers, 00:48:06.58\00:48:08.18 they will be forbidden to buy and sell. 00:48:08.18\00:48:10.15 It will finally be decreed 00:48:10.15\00:48:11.55 that they shall be put to death. 00:48:11.55\00:48:14.09 But to the obedient the promise is given, 00:48:14.09\00:48:15.96 'His dwelling will be on high, 00:48:15.96\00:48:17.89 his place of defense will be the munitions of rocks.'" 00:48:17.89\00:48:21.93 Will there be a time when maybe we will see, 00:48:21.93\00:48:24.37 friends, and job, and family turn against us. 00:48:24.37\00:48:28.14 Jesus said, 00:48:28.14\00:48:29.44 those of your own household will become your foes. 00:48:29.44\00:48:32.51 That doesn't mean every person, every case, 00:48:32.51\00:48:34.21 but we're gonna see even among our family. 00:48:34.21\00:48:36.24 People will turn against us. 00:48:36.24\00:48:38.01 You may lose your earthly support, 00:48:38.01\00:48:39.61 your earthly possessions, and your earthly positions. 00:48:39.61\00:48:43.12 You might find yourself out in the woods, 00:48:43.12\00:48:45.92 but the promise is that I will take care of you. 00:48:45.92\00:48:48.19 I will support you. 00:48:48.19\00:48:50.19 It says, "Bread will be given them 00:48:50.19\00:48:54.20 and the water will be sure. 00:48:54.20\00:48:56.30 By this promise the children of God will live." 00:48:56.30\00:49:00.44 You know, when we look at the trials 00:49:00.44\00:49:01.87 that David went through 00:49:01.87\00:49:02.87 as He prepared him for the palace, 00:49:02.87\00:49:05.27 and here he starts in the palace, 00:49:05.27\00:49:06.37 ends up in a cave, 00:49:06.37\00:49:08.28 but he's gonna go back to the palace again. 00:49:08.28\00:49:10.61 When you come to Christ, He makes a promise to you, 00:49:10.61\00:49:12.58 but you might find your path to the palace 00:49:12.58\00:49:15.45 is gonna take you through some really difficult trials. 00:49:15.45\00:49:18.19 When you're going through your trials 00:49:18.19\00:49:19.99 and you're running for your life, 00:49:19.99\00:49:21.56 you know, the devil is out to destroy you. 00:49:21.56\00:49:23.22 Did you know that? 00:49:23.22\00:49:24.29 I don't want to scare you, but it's true. 00:49:24.29\00:49:26.26 The devil is going around like a roaring lion 00:49:26.26\00:49:30.07 to make an appetizer out of you. 00:49:30.07\00:49:32.53 He wants to destroy you. 00:49:32.53\00:49:33.67 And so you go through these trials, 00:49:33.67\00:49:35.40 don't be discouraged, Jesus is your friend. 00:49:35.40\00:49:37.64 Have you ever heard a mouse howl like a wolf? 00:49:48.65\00:49:52.59 Well, what would you expect would happen 00:49:52.59\00:49:54.32 when a creature changes its destiny 00:49:54.32\00:49:56.69 from the hapless prey to mighty predator? 00:49:56.69\00:50:00.50 From the outside, they look very much like 00:50:00.50\00:50:02.30 just an oversized field mouse. 00:50:02.30\00:50:04.53 Cute brown fur, white on the underbelly, 00:50:04.53\00:50:07.27 nice little beady eyes, 00:50:07.27\00:50:09.00 but that's where the similarity stop. 00:50:09.00\00:50:11.01 Grasshopper mice are very unusual, 00:50:11.01\00:50:13.38 making them the objects of great interest 00:50:13.38\00:50:15.61 for animal researchers. 00:50:15.61\00:50:18.91 These furry little creatures are found 00:50:18.91\00:50:20.58 in the harsh deserts of North America, 00:50:20.58\00:50:23.02 they're very territorial in nature, 00:50:23.02\00:50:24.65 and they will monopolize and fend off 25 acres. 00:50:24.65\00:50:28.29 They don't build their own homes 00:50:28.29\00:50:29.69 but sort of confiscate the burrows 00:50:29.69\00:50:31.46 in the homes of other creatures. 00:50:31.46\00:50:34.36 They're not called grasshopper mice 00:50:34.36\00:50:35.86 'cause they hop around, 00:50:35.86\00:50:37.10 but it's because they eat a lot of grasshoppers. 00:50:37.10\00:50:39.20 In fact, scientists have discovered 00:50:39.20\00:50:40.64 grasshopper mice are the only mice 00:50:40.64\00:50:42.87 that are purely carnivorous. 00:50:42.87\00:50:46.37 They hunt much like cats or weasels stocking their prey 00:50:46.37\00:50:49.48 in a predatory fashion, and when they pounce, 00:50:49.48\00:50:52.45 they are ferocious. 00:50:52.45\00:50:53.92 Sometimes even taking on snakes and scorpions and centipedes. 00:50:53.92\00:50:59.02 When a grasshopper mouse gets into a fierce battle 00:50:59.02\00:51:01.49 with a snake or a scorpion or centipede, 00:51:01.49\00:51:03.89 they may be bit or stung several times, 00:51:03.89\00:51:07.10 but what is amazing to researchers is 00:51:07.10\00:51:08.96 they've noticed, when they are bitten, 00:51:08.96\00:51:11.17 they somehow shake it off 00:51:11.17\00:51:12.73 because they convert the toxin and the venom to pain killer. 00:51:12.73\00:51:17.74 I think you can understand why this information 00:51:17.74\00:51:20.08 would be of special interest to scientists 00:51:20.08\00:51:22.48 that are trying to discover new ways for people 00:51:22.48\00:51:25.05 to deal with chronic pain. 00:51:25.05\00:51:27.48 What are the most intriguing characteristics 00:51:27.48\00:51:30.05 of these little creatures is 00:51:30.05\00:51:32.09 when they're defending their territory 00:51:32.09\00:51:33.96 or celebrating a victory over some adversary, 00:51:33.96\00:51:37.09 they'll throw back their head 00:51:37.09\00:51:38.49 and let out this earth shaking howl. 00:51:38.49\00:51:41.46 It's a mousy howl, check it out. 00:51:41.46\00:51:44.07 The grasshopper mouse is not the only member of creation 00:51:50.14\00:51:53.41 that can survive encounters with venomous predators. 00:51:53.41\00:51:57.08 In Luke 10:19, it says, 00:51:57.08\00:51:58.65 "Behold, I will give you authority 00:51:58.65\00:52:01.38 to trample on serpents and scorpions 00:52:01.38\00:52:04.05 and over all the power of the enemy. 00:52:04.05\00:52:06.39 Nothing will by any means hurt you." 00:52:06.39\00:52:09.12 We don't have to be the biggest and the strongest 00:52:09.12\00:52:11.33 to defeat our enemy and let out that victory roar. 00:52:11.33\00:52:14.36 When God called David to be king, 00:52:14.36\00:52:16.40 no human would have guessed that he had it in him. 00:52:16.40\00:52:18.73 He was young and insignificant, 00:52:18.73\00:52:21.04 from the outside he looked like there was no greatness in him, 00:52:21.04\00:52:24.54 but when God looked at his heart, 00:52:24.54\00:52:26.34 he saw courage, humility, compassion, and love. 00:52:26.34\00:52:29.34 David was imperfect and he made mistakes, 00:52:29.34\00:52:32.18 but through God's power he was able to conquer giants. 00:52:32.18\00:52:36.62 Friend, God does not intend 00:52:36.62\00:52:37.82 that you live out the rest of your life 00:52:37.82\00:52:39.55 cowering and trembling like a little field mouse. 00:52:39.55\00:52:42.52 If God can take the grasshopper mouse 00:52:42.52\00:52:44.49 and give him courage, 00:52:44.49\00:52:45.63 so that he fights snakes, and scorpions, and centipedes. 00:52:45.63\00:52:49.23 If God can put in the heart of David the courage 00:52:49.23\00:52:51.53 to fight giants like Goliath, 00:52:51.53\00:52:54.07 then he can give you that same courage. 00:52:54.07\00:52:56.34 The scripture say, "God has not given you the spirit of fear, 00:52:56.34\00:53:00.18 but of power, love, and a sound mind." 00:53:00.18\00:53:03.48 And you can have that peace in your heart, 00:53:03.48\00:53:05.35 when you invite the Prince of Peace 00:53:05.35\00:53:06.85 in your heart. 00:53:06.85\00:53:07.88 Why don't you do that right now? 00:53:07.88\00:53:09.38 Amazing Facts, changed lives. 00:53:21.60\00:53:24.57 My greatest wish is that my children will see me 00:53:30.34\00:53:35.78 the way I see my own father. 00:53:35.78\00:53:40.52 He's a very devoted man. 00:53:40.52\00:53:43.75 And that kind of framed my childhood 00:53:43.75\00:53:46.15 going forward from there 00:53:46.15\00:53:47.42 where I was always involved in church work, 00:53:47.42\00:53:51.46 and I had a very rich experience 00:53:51.46\00:53:54.36 with the Lord at a young age, 00:53:54.36\00:53:58.07 all the way up through college. 00:53:58.07\00:53:59.60 Then after I got married, 00:53:59.60\00:54:01.80 I got in a company called Comcast. 00:54:01.80\00:54:04.81 And I spent the past roughly eight and a half years, 00:54:04.81\00:54:08.94 nine years at Comcast. 00:54:08.94\00:54:11.41 And I was actually watching television with my son. 00:54:11.41\00:54:15.58 And a Comcast commercial came on the air. 00:54:15.58\00:54:19.59 And he said, "Oh, daddy, that's Comcast, 00:54:19.59\00:54:22.82 that's where you work, daddy." 00:54:22.82\00:54:25.79 And most fathers would be proud of something like that, 00:54:25.79\00:54:29.23 but it really struck me that, 00:54:29.23\00:54:31.83 you know, my son is getting older 00:54:31.83\00:54:33.60 and he does not see me as a servant of the Lord. 00:54:33.60\00:54:36.24 He sees me as a servant of my company. 00:54:36.24\00:54:40.14 And I knew that I would have to make some changes, 00:54:40.14\00:54:44.35 because I wanted him to know me as a man of God. 00:54:44.35\00:54:49.62 I never thought I would be a preacher 00:54:49.62\00:54:51.25 or anything like that. 00:54:51.25\00:54:53.25 But I knew that, there was room in the work for me 00:54:53.25\00:54:57.33 and for my own, for my talents. 00:54:57.33\00:55:00.90 And I wanted my son 00:55:00.90\00:55:02.40 to see me operating in the work. 00:55:02.40\00:55:07.40 That's when I knew that my time there was coming to an end. 00:55:07.40\00:55:11.44 I was sitting in my office one day 00:55:11.44\00:55:13.51 and I was kneeling in prayer, 00:55:13.51\00:55:15.41 I said, God, now show me what You want me to do 00:55:15.41\00:55:18.48 because, you know, 00:55:18.48\00:55:20.85 it seems like a big move here and... 00:55:20.85\00:55:24.52 Everyone is thinking, I'm crazy. 00:55:26.92\00:55:29.42 And I don't know exactly how, 00:55:29.42\00:55:33.96 you know, things are gonna go if they don't go well. 00:55:33.96\00:55:38.30 You know, the crazy thought 00:55:38.30\00:55:39.33 when you, you're thinking about God 00:55:39.33\00:55:42.24 and I lifted my head up in prayer 00:55:42.24\00:55:46.44 and they were just like a flock of... 00:55:46.44\00:55:49.94 Oh, maybe 300 birds that were just flying 00:55:49.94\00:55:54.22 and they were swooping down over the water 00:55:54.22\00:55:56.92 and they would fly back up 00:55:56.92\00:55:58.75 and then, they would chase each other around 00:55:58.75\00:56:01.76 and, you know, I was just looking at the pattern 00:56:01.76\00:56:03.46 of the giant flock, 00:56:03.46\00:56:05.39 and the promise of the Lord came to me 00:56:05.39\00:56:08.46 where He says that, 00:56:08.46\00:56:10.03 you know, He takes care of the sparrows, 00:56:10.03\00:56:13.44 and you don't see them worrying about 00:56:13.44\00:56:16.44 how they are going to be taking care of from day to day. 00:56:16.44\00:56:19.81 You know, they don't, you know, wring their hands wondering, 00:56:19.81\00:56:23.58 you know, will there be any worms to eat tomorrow? 00:56:23.58\00:56:26.55 And that promise really stood out to me 00:56:26.55\00:56:30.42 and He said, "How much more do I love you? 00:56:30.42\00:56:33.82 You know, I'm not gonna send you on a mission 00:56:33.82\00:56:36.42 to do My work and leave you high and dry, 00:56:36.42\00:56:40.40 because you claim to be My child, 00:56:40.40\00:56:42.46 you claim to be My son." 00:56:42.46\00:56:44.27 And everyone knows that, 00:56:44.27\00:56:47.47 that assurance allows me to know that, 00:56:47.47\00:56:49.90 whatever happens here, whatever happens after here. 00:56:49.90\00:56:55.64 We're sons of God 00:56:55.64\00:56:57.55 and there are certain things that we shouldn't worry about. 00:56:57.55\00:57:01.85 From the day we arrived at AFCO, 00:57:01.85\00:57:05.79 it's been obvious 00:57:05.79\00:57:07.49 that God has blessed the Amazing Facts Ministry, 00:57:07.49\00:57:10.63 the AFCO program, 00:57:10.63\00:57:12.56 and I will be using my AFCO experience, 00:57:12.56\00:57:17.13 no matter where I go to reach people out 00:57:17.13\00:57:19.97 because the personal touch of face-to-face evangelism, 00:57:19.97\00:57:25.81 speaking and sharing the word of God 00:57:25.81\00:57:28.54 out of your own mouth, 00:57:28.54\00:57:29.98 there's no replacement for that. 00:57:29.98\00:57:32.35 And Amazing Facts has been very instrumental 00:57:32.35\00:57:35.02 in helping me 00:57:35.02\00:57:36.58 find the area of the work of God 00:57:36.58\00:57:41.92 and shown me how large and how broad it is. 00:57:41.92\00:57:45.56 It's been a tremendous blessing to be in a place 00:57:45.56\00:57:48.90 where we are around people seeking to do God's will 00:57:48.90\00:57:53.40 and listening for His voice in their life, 00:57:53.40\00:57:56.10 and that's very, very important today. 00:57:56.10\00:57:58.71 Together we have spread the gospel 00:58:06.01\00:58:08.58 much farther than ever before. 00:58:08.58\00:58:11.45 Thank you for your support. 00:58:11.45\00:58:13.86
