Doug Batchelor: I love the quote, 00:00:01.06\00:00:02.10 "The greatest want of the world is the want of men, 00:00:02.10\00:00:05.00 men who will stand for the right, 00:00:05.00\00:00:06.74 though the heavens fall." 00:00:06.74\00:00:08.64 Yet studies are showing for several years now 00:00:08.64\00:00:11.37 that secular media and culture have sought to portray men 00:00:11.37\00:00:14.74 as the family idiots. 00:00:14.74\00:00:17.35 Sadly, respect for the role of fathers and husbands 00:00:17.35\00:00:20.82 has reached an all-time low. 00:00:20.82\00:00:23.02 So, now, as the dispirited men abandon their roles of godly 00:00:23.02\00:00:26.76 leadership, it's not surprising that we're experiencing 00:00:26.76\00:00:29.79 a moral free-fall in our country. 00:00:29.79\00:00:32.19 That's why starting September 30, 00:00:32.19\00:00:34.10 I'll be presenting a new program called "Mighty Men of God." 00:00:34.10\00:00:38.53 Using biblical principles, this encouraging four-part series 00:00:38.53\00:00:42.07 will address how to be a loving father, faithful husband, and 00:00:42.07\00:00:45.54 all-around man of God in the family, church, and nation. 00:00:45.54\00:00:49.28 Please plan now to join me for this live event, and learn 00:00:49.28\00:00:52.41 from the Word how to live courageously for the king. 00:00:52.41\00:00:56.89 [music] 00:01:00.79\00:01:15.54 Doug: I'm glad you're here today. 00:01:15.54\00:01:17.01 I'm going to be starting a series on the book of Job. 00:01:17.01\00:01:23.18 And I really--you know, whenever we open the Word of God, 00:01:23.18\00:01:27.45 we're treading on holy ground. 00:01:27.45\00:01:29.25 But in a special sense, this is a remarkable book. 00:01:29.25\00:01:33.96 And I've never wanted to rush through it because there's 00:01:33.96\00:01:37.43 so much power in the book. 00:01:37.43\00:01:39.29 It's such a profound book that I thought I'm going to take my 00:01:39.29\00:01:43.23 time, and we're going to spend some time talking 00:01:43.23\00:01:45.43 about the book of Job. 00:01:45.43\00:01:47.10 The book of Job was not written for people living long ago. 00:01:47.10\00:01:49.50 The book of Job was written for today. 00:01:49.50\00:01:53.14 And it is very much a book for every people in every age. 00:01:53.14\00:01:57.38 It talks about heaven and hell. 00:01:57.38\00:02:00.62 It talks about God and Satan, 00:02:00.62\00:02:02.78 talks about blessing and cursing. 00:02:02.78\00:02:04.85 It talks about family and friends. 00:02:04.85\00:02:07.39 It talks about betrayal of friends. 00:02:07.39\00:02:09.92 Talks about patience, and victory, and defeat, and just 00:02:09.92\00:02:13.09 all of the great themes of life can be found somehow, somewhere. 00:02:13.09\00:02:17.10 Talks about the Second Coming of Jesus and the resurrection. 00:02:17.10\00:02:19.73 It's in the book of Job. 00:02:19.73\00:02:22.17 And so, we're going to give some time and attention to that. 00:02:22.17\00:02:25.51 And I, of course, appreciate your prayers as we do. 00:02:25.51\00:02:29.54 Now, in our discussion about Job, sometimes as a pastor, 00:02:29.54\00:02:37.32 you know, I look out there and I see some of you 00:02:37.32\00:02:39.52 have been Christians all of your life. 00:02:39.52\00:02:41.99 Some of you have grey hair or no hair, 00:02:41.99\00:02:44.23 and you have been studying it. 00:02:44.23\00:02:46.19 And you know, I can speak to you about the meat of the Word. 00:02:46.19\00:02:48.40 Then we have children and teenagers out there, 00:02:48.40\00:02:50.53 and you have never read the book of Job, 00:02:50.53\00:02:52.47 and you have no background in it. 00:02:52.47\00:02:54.40 Matter of fact, you thought it was the book of Job, 00:02:54.40\00:02:57.41 and until I said that. 00:02:57.41\00:02:59.87 And so, you know, I try to find a balance where I can say 00:02:59.87\00:03:03.14 something that everybody can relate to, but this is a book 00:03:03.14\00:03:05.75 where I'm hoping I can get into the meat of the Word and do some 00:03:05.75\00:03:09.42 serious study with you because there's just so much here 00:03:09.42\00:03:12.45 that we can learn from. 00:03:12.45\00:03:14.72 An overview of the book of Job quickly we'll just give you. 00:03:14.72\00:03:18.63 There's 42 chapters, 1,070 verses, 10,102 words. 00:03:18.63\00:03:25.87 In the Septuagint, the book of Job is calculated to be 00:03:25.87\00:03:29.07 among the books of poetry. 00:03:29.07\00:03:31.27 And you might even find it placed 00:03:31.27\00:03:33.58 between Psalms and Proverbs. 00:03:33.58\00:03:35.54 Some of the different Hebrew texts put the book 00:03:35.54\00:03:38.28 of Job in different places. 00:03:38.28\00:03:40.28 It's none of the most mysterious books in the Bible because 00:03:40.28\00:03:43.08 there's quite a bit of debate about, you know, who he was, 00:03:43.08\00:03:46.39 and where he lived, and when he lived, 00:03:46.39\00:03:48.86 and why all this happened, and was it real. 00:03:48.86\00:03:51.63 And we'll be getting into these things along the way. 00:03:51.63\00:03:54.73 I heard somebody quote Ernest Hemingway, 00:03:54.73\00:03:57.37 the famous author. 00:03:57.37\00:03:59.43 They said that Ernest Hemingway said that the book of Job is, 00:03:59.43\00:04:03.30 "The most magnificent and sublime of any book 00:04:03.30\00:04:06.91 in the Bible." 00:04:06.91\00:04:08.98 And when I heard them quoting Ernest Hemingway, I kind of 00:04:08.98\00:04:11.78 smiled because actually, they didn't know Ernest Hemingway 00:04:11.78\00:04:14.75 was quoting Martin Luther. 00:04:14.75\00:04:17.09 Martin Luther said in his commentary--that's good that 00:04:17.09\00:04:19.39 Hemingway was reading that. 00:04:19.39\00:04:21.66 Martin Luther said, "The book of Job is more magnificent 00:04:21.66\00:04:25.26 and sublime than any other book of Scripture." 00:04:25.26\00:04:29.13 Now, you realize Martin Luther translated the whole Bible, and 00:04:29.13\00:04:32.67 he spoke several languages, and understood the Hebrew languages. 00:04:32.67\00:04:35.74 And for a guy who's one of the founders of the Protestant 00:04:35.74\00:04:38.87 movement to say that, not only did he say that, but you can 00:04:38.87\00:04:43.11 find where Matthew Henry, John Wesley, and many of 00:04:43.11\00:04:48.18 the great reformers say--Spurgeon, they believe 00:04:48.18\00:04:51.99 one of the most majestic books in the Bible 00:04:51.99\00:04:54.19 is the book of Job. 00:04:54.19\00:04:56.22 So, I hope you come to appreciate it that way. 00:04:56.22\00:04:58.23 I remember when I was just a baby Christian, and I knew 00:04:58.23\00:05:01.53 nothing about the Bible, and knew very little. 00:05:01.53\00:05:05.40 And I just decided one day to open the book of Job 00:05:05.40\00:05:08.40 and start reading it. 00:05:08.40\00:05:10.57 And I'll admit I didn't understand everything I read, 00:05:10.57\00:05:12.77 but something attracted me to it. 00:05:12.77\00:05:15.88 It was--it was, to me, so deep that it was awesome. 00:05:15.88\00:05:21.95 And I remember reading through the whole book and just going, 00:05:21.95\00:05:24.59 "Wow, this is inspired. 00:05:24.59\00:05:26.76 I've never heard words like this before." 00:05:26.76\00:05:28.79 Now, you hear four or five characters speaking 00:05:28.79\00:05:31.63 in the book of Job. 00:05:31.63\00:05:33.16 You've got the words of Job, and you've got Job's three friends. 00:05:33.16\00:05:35.50 And this mysterious fourth friend, Elihu, appears at the 00:05:35.50\00:05:39.70 32nd chapter in the book. 00:05:39.70\00:05:41.97 You got God speaking. You've got the devil speaking. 00:05:41.97\00:05:45.94 And it's considered to be, from chapter 2 on, there's quite 00:05:45.94\00:05:51.35 a bit of poetry or just some incredible* Hebrew rhythmic 00:05:51.35\00:05:57.62 parallelisms that are being shared there. 00:05:57.62\00:06:01.79 First thing I might want to make clear is that the book of Job 00:06:01.79\00:06:05.09 is a real book. 00:06:05.09\00:06:07.13 Some people hear about, you know, talking about what's 00:06:07.13\00:06:09.43 happening on earth, and this man is blessed, 00:06:09.43\00:06:11.37 and the numbers that it gives. 00:06:11.37\00:06:13.37 Got 7 sons, 3 daughters, and 7,000 of this, and 12,000-- 00:06:13.37\00:06:17.07 and it all seems so exact. 00:06:17.07\00:06:19.21 And for 7 days, they sat down. 00:06:19.21\00:06:21.21 And they said it's a parable. Job never lived. 00:06:21.21\00:06:23.28 It's somebody wrote it to tell a story. 00:06:23.28\00:06:26.15 You can't take it serious. 00:06:26.15\00:06:28.02 I mean, it talks about that God is in heaven, and there's 00:06:28.02\00:06:30.02 a meeting in heaven, and God's talking to the devil, 00:06:30.02\00:06:31.85 and the devil's talking to God. 00:06:31.85\00:06:33.52 And it's obviously a parable. 00:06:33.52\00:06:35.49 But I'd respectfully disagree. 00:06:35.49\00:06:37.39 For one thing, because the other New and Old Testament writers 00:06:37.39\00:06:39.86 speak of Job as an actual event. 00:06:39.86\00:06:43.13 And Jesus addresses it that way. 00:06:43.13\00:06:46.63 We just read a quote from the book of James referring to Job. 00:06:46.63\00:06:50.37 If you look in Ezekiel--now, we're going to look at this 00:06:50.37\00:06:53.04 verse more than once. 00:06:53.04\00:06:55.11 And I'm going to give you a lot of Scripture, 00:06:55.11\00:06:56.95 so you might take notes. 00:06:56.95\00:06:58.78 And they won't all be on the screen. 00:06:58.78\00:07:00.72 Ezekiel 14:14. 00:07:00.72\00:07:02.38 In one of his prophesies, Ezekiel says, "Though these 00:07:02.38\00:07:04.19 three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it," meaning 00:07:04.19\00:07:08.46 in the land, "they will deliver neither--they'll deliver 00:07:08.46\00:07:11.83 but their own souls by their righteousness, 00:07:11.83\00:07:14.10 says the Lord God." 00:07:14.10\00:07:15.93 Now, did Noah really live? 00:07:15.93\00:07:18.03 Did Daniel really live? 00:07:18.03\00:07:20.00 So, when Ezekiel adds in Job, why would we suddenly think that 00:07:20.00\00:07:23.10 he's talking about the righteousness of Daniel and 00:07:23.10\00:07:25.67 Noah, and then he mentions Job, and Job's just a parable, 00:07:25.67\00:07:29.04 he's a fairy tale? 00:07:29.04\00:07:31.41 The prophet Ezekiel speaks of him as a real character 00:07:31.41\00:07:34.32 who was a righteous man, who had a soul to deliver. 00:07:34.32\00:07:37.85 And only his own soul would be delivered by his righteousness. 00:07:37.85\00:07:41.26 By the way, Ezekiel says something very similar 00:07:41.26\00:07:43.29 to that twice. 00:07:43.29\00:07:45.56 Who wrote the book of Job? 00:07:45.56\00:07:47.66 Somewhat a mystery. 00:07:47.66\00:07:50.10 Most of the scholars that I've read believe that Moses 00:07:50.10\00:07:53.20 is responsible for the book. 00:07:53.20\00:07:55.50 It dates as far back as we can find Hebrew literature, 00:07:55.50\00:07:58.87 the book of Job is there. 00:07:58.87\00:08:01.11 It predates the writings of David. 00:08:01.11\00:08:04.11 When you look at the time, and I'll get to that in just 00:08:04.11\00:08:06.35 a minute, it seems like it was written already 00:08:06.35\00:08:09.98 by the time of Moses. 00:08:09.98\00:08:12.19 It is possible that this fourth person--you've got the three 00:08:12.19\00:08:16.02 friends of Job, and then chapter 32 this fourth person, 00:08:16.02\00:08:19.66 Elihu, appears. 00:08:19.66\00:08:21.56 And he begins to speak. 00:08:21.56\00:08:23.43 He starts to speak for the first time in first person, 00:08:23.43\00:08:26.43 saying, "I, I, I, I." 00:08:26.43\00:08:29.10 And we've wondered if he was the one who kind of was a bystander, 00:08:29.10\00:08:32.44 listening to everything, writing it all down, 00:08:32.44\00:08:34.74 and finally he thought, "I'm going to speak." 00:08:34.74\00:08:37.38 And Moses took his writings and codified it, 00:08:37.38\00:08:41.02 or it may have been passed on orally. 00:08:41.02\00:08:44.09 But we believe Moses was--the language also. 00:08:44.09\00:08:47.12 You read the language in Genesis and the language in Job, 00:08:47.12\00:08:50.49 and there's a lot of similarities there. 00:08:50.49\00:08:53.43 God is referred to more times as Shaddai, you've heard 00:08:53.43\00:08:57.30 of El Shaddai, the Almighty, in the book of Job 00:08:57.30\00:09:01.37 more than any other book in the Bible. 00:09:01.37\00:09:03.67 He's the all supplying one. 00:09:03.67\00:09:06.27 And it's a real story. 00:09:06.27\00:09:08.68 Talks about the Chaldeans coming in, and the Sabeans fighting. 00:09:08.68\00:09:13.05 I mean, if it was an allegory, why wouldn't you just say 00:09:13.05\00:09:15.12 some robbers came and stole his stuff? 00:09:15.12\00:09:17.29 Why would you specifically mention a real nation back then 00:09:17.29\00:09:19.99 that were known for robbing? 00:09:19.99\00:09:22.56 So, they mentioned real places and real things. 00:09:22.56\00:09:24.89 Tell you what, what I'd like to do with you is go 00:09:24.89\00:09:26.80 to the book of Job. 00:09:26.80\00:09:28.76 And just so you all know, you know, people don't pretend 00:09:28.76\00:09:31.33 you don't ever watch the clock. 00:09:31.33\00:09:33.20 You're going to want to know, "Is he going to go 00:09:33.20\00:09:35.04 to chapter 30 today? 00:09:35.04\00:09:36.71 How far is he going to go?" 00:09:36.71\00:09:38.31 So, I thought I'll just tell you I'm just doing 12 verses. 00:09:38.31\00:09:40.38 Now, you might think, does that mean 42 chapters, 00:09:40.38\00:09:42.81 we're going to be studying Job until 2019? 00:09:42.81\00:09:47.25 No, because once you get into the poetry, 00:09:47.25\00:09:49.18 we'll be talking about themes. 00:09:49.18\00:09:50.85 It's going to go much quicker. 00:09:50.85\00:09:52.62 But the introduction is very important. 00:09:52.62\00:09:54.39 And so, we're just going to read the first 12 verses, 00:09:54.39\00:09:56.66 and that's what we'll cover today, God willing. 00:09:56.66\00:09:59.79 "There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job, and that 00:09:59.79\00:10:06.90 man was blameless and upright, one who feared God 00:10:06.90\00:10:10.94 and shunned evil." 00:10:10.94\00:10:13.01 Your King James would say eschewed, same word. 00:10:13.01\00:10:15.58 It means to avoid. 00:10:15.58\00:10:17.71 "And seven sons and three daughters were born to him. 00:10:17.71\00:10:21.22 Also, his possessions were 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 00:10:21.22\00:10:26.15 500 yoke of oxen." 00:10:26.15\00:10:28.56 A yoke, of course, is 2, so 500 yoke is 1,000 oxen. 00:10:28.56\00:10:32.29 "Five hundred female donkeys, and a very large household, 00:10:32.29\00:10:36.73 so that this man was the greatest of all 00:10:36.73\00:10:39.57 the people of the east." 00:10:39.57\00:10:42.04 Again, it's giving a real place. 00:10:42.04\00:10:44.57 "And his sons would go and feast in their houses, 00:10:44.57\00:10:46.98 each one on his appointed day." 00:10:46.98\00:10:49.41 I believe that means birthday. 00:10:49.41\00:10:51.58 "And would send and invite their three sisters to eat 00:10:51.58\00:10:53.95 and to drink with them. 00:10:53.95\00:10:56.12 And so it was, when the days of feasting had run their course, 00:10:56.12\00:10:59.19 that Job would send and sanctify them, and he would rise early in 00:10:59.19\00:11:03.09 the morning and offer burnt offerings according 00:11:03.09\00:11:05.36 to the number of them all. 00:11:05.36\00:11:07.46 For Job said, 'It may be that my sons have sinned 00:11:07.46\00:11:09.70 and cursed God in their hearts.' 00:11:09.70\00:11:12.07 Thus Job did regularly." 00:11:12.07\00:11:14.37 Now, the scene changes. 00:11:14.37\00:11:16.50 It starts out with a scene on earth in this place called Uz, 00:11:16.50\00:11:20.24 and it tells us about the faith of Job, tells us about the 00:11:20.24\00:11:24.71 fortune of Job, and it tells us about the family of Job. 00:11:24.71\00:11:29.25 It just sets the stage for this battle so you'll understand what 00:11:29.25\00:11:32.12 kind of man is about to go through a trial that is hard 00:11:32.12\00:11:35.96 for us to imagine. 00:11:35.96\00:11:38.56 "Now there was a day." 00:11:38.56\00:11:40.50 It's interesting it starts out, "Now there was a man." 00:11:40.50\00:11:42.56 And verse 6, "Now there was a day when the sons of God came to 00:11:42.56\00:11:45.70 present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came among them. 00:11:45.70\00:11:51.04 And the Lord said to Satan, 'From where do you come?' 00:11:51.04\00:11:54.78 So Satan answered the Lord and said, 'From going to and fro 00:11:54.78\00:11:57.85 on the earth, and from walking-- from walking 00:11:57.85\00:12:00.38 back and forth on it.' 00:12:00.38\00:12:02.52 And the Lord said to Satan, 'Have you considered my servant 00:12:02.52\00:12:05.12 Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless 00:12:05.12\00:12:09.19 and an upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil?' 00:12:09.19\00:12:13.83 So Satan answered the Lord and said, 00:12:13.83\00:12:16.13 'Does Job fear God for nothing? 00:12:16.13\00:12:18.37 Have you not made a hedge about him and about his household, 00:12:18.37\00:12:21.30 and around all that he has on every side? 00:12:21.30\00:12:24.01 You've blessed the work of his hands and his possessions, 00:12:24.01\00:12:26.64 and have increased in the land. 00:12:26.64\00:12:28.98 But now stretch out your hand, and touch all that he has, 00:12:28.98\00:12:32.41 and he will surely curse you to your face.' 00:12:32.41\00:12:35.52 And the Lord said to Satan, 'Behold, all that he has is in 00:12:35.52\00:12:38.82 your power, only do not lay a hand on his person.' 00:12:38.82\00:12:43.22 So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord." 00:12:43.22\00:12:46.39 All right, that's what we're going to look at. 00:12:46.39\00:12:49.40 Well, we gave you a little overview of Job. 00:12:49.40\00:12:51.57 And I'll be sharing more as we proceed. 00:12:51.57\00:12:54.17 One of the first things we might talk about is 00:12:54.17\00:12:56.37 when did this happen. 00:12:56.37\00:12:58.54 What is the time for Job? 00:12:58.54\00:13:01.54 Well, there's some mystery to it. 00:13:01.54\00:13:03.35 I'm not going to pretend I can fix an exact date, but as near 00:13:03.35\00:13:06.21 as we can tell, it was somewhere between--Job lived sometime 00:13:06.21\00:13:09.42 between the age of 1700 BC and 1900 BC. 00:13:09.42\00:13:16.16 He lived during the time of some of the patriarchs. 00:13:16.16\00:13:18.89 Now, one of the reasons for that, and I'll give you some of 00:13:18.89\00:13:21.06 the evidence, at the end of the book of Job, after this terrible 00:13:21.06\00:13:24.23 trial that he goes through, it says, Job lived 100-- 00:13:24.23\00:13:28.84 it says, "After this," after the trial, "Job lived 140 years, 00:13:28.84\00:13:34.31 and he saw his children's children and grandchildren 00:13:34.31\00:13:37.78 to 4 generations." 00:13:37.78\00:13:39.85 So, he lived long enough after his trials to have another 00:13:39.85\00:13:43.15 7 some and 3 daughters, and to see their offspring 00:13:43.15\00:13:46.99 to the fourth generation. 00:13:46.99\00:13:49.12 He must have been at least--well, the Septuagint 00:13:49.12\00:13:53.50 says that he was 70 years old. 00:13:53.50\00:13:57.03 It must have been 50 if you've got 10 kids. 00:13:57.03\00:13:59.87 And back then, they didn't start as early as we do today. 00:13:59.87\00:14:03.97 You know, Isaac didn't even start looking for a wife 00:14:03.97\00:14:06.94 till he was 40. 00:14:06.94\00:14:09.18 And Jacob got married at 70. 00:14:09.18\00:14:11.28 And so, because of the way they did things back then, you know, 00:14:11.28\00:14:14.48 Septuagint is probably pretty close, which means 00:14:14.48\00:14:17.02 he lived about 210 years. 00:14:17.02\00:14:19.95 And Bible is remarking that that was old even for that era. 00:14:19.95\00:14:26.06 Now, based on the land and the names that are used, these names 00:14:26.06\00:14:31.67 of some of these characters do appear other places 00:14:31.67\00:14:33.77 in the Bible. 00:14:33.77\00:14:35.80 And because of when they lived, we think we know he lived 00:14:35.80\00:14:38.71 during the time of Esau's descendants. 00:14:38.71\00:14:41.94 You can look, for instance, in Genesis 22:20, "Now it came 00:14:41.94\00:14:46.72 to pass after these things it was told Abraham, saying, 00:14:46.72\00:14:49.98 'Indeed Milcah has also borne children 00:14:49.98\00:14:52.75 to your brother Nahor.'" 00:14:52.75\00:14:54.86 Milcah was the wife of Nahor. "Uz his firstborn." 00:14:54.86\00:14:58.16 What was his name? Uz. 00:14:58.16\00:15:01.00 Job lived in the land of Uz. We'll get to it in a minute. 00:15:01.00\00:15:04.13 "Buz his brother." 00:15:04.13\00:15:06.10 Can you imagine having two kids, Uz and Buz? 00:15:06.10\00:15:07.87 Wouldn't you get that mixed up? 00:15:07.87\00:15:09.70 I mean, if you got a David and a Daniel, 00:15:09.70\00:15:11.57 you'll always mix them up. 00:15:11.57\00:15:13.24 Could you imagine Uz and Buz, and getting mad 00:15:13.24\00:15:15.14 trying to call them? 00:15:15.14\00:15:17.35 What were they thinking? 00:15:17.35\00:15:19.08 And then how would they get-- 00:15:19.08\00:15:20.95 wouldn't they get teased at school? 00:15:20.95\00:15:22.68 Uz and Buz, it's like, you know--yeah, anyway. 00:15:22.68\00:15:27.39 Okay, "Buz his brother, Kemuel the father of Amram." 00:15:27.39\00:15:29.79 So, the land of Uz may have been partially named out of this. 00:15:29.79\00:15:33.86 You know, they often named territories and regions 00:15:33.86\00:15:36.46 out of some of them. 00:15:36.46\00:15:38.43 And so, you've got Uz as a nephew of Abraham 00:15:38.43\00:15:41.80 by his brother--not like Lot, this is by his brother Nahor. 00:15:41.80\00:15:46.11 And then if you look in Genesis 36:10 and 11, 00:15:46.11\00:15:49.94 "These are the names of Esau's sons, Eliphaz the son of Adah." 00:15:49.94\00:15:55.55 And you go down to verse 11, "The sons of Eliphaz were Teman, 00:15:55.55\00:15:59.62 Omar, Zepho, and Gatam." 00:15:59.62\00:16:02.39 Well, one of the friends of Esau was Eliphaz the Temanite. 00:16:02.39\00:16:07.76 And then it tells us that Job was one of the greatest 00:16:07.76\00:16:09.96 of the men of the what territory? 00:16:09.96\00:16:13.07 The east. 00:16:13.07\00:16:14.87 Now, when I say the east, you'd be thinking maybe about China. 00:16:14.87\00:16:17.44 But here, we're talking about east of the Jordan River. 00:16:17.44\00:16:20.98 They had--the descendants of Abraham, some settled 00:16:20.98\00:16:24.05 on the west, and that would be Abraham and Jacob. 00:16:24.05\00:16:26.72 Some settled on the east. 00:16:26.72\00:16:29.25 And the children of the east were often the Arabs. 00:16:29.25\00:16:32.35 And the children that Abraham had by Ishmael, and you know 00:16:32.35\00:16:36.46 he had another litter of kids with Keturah. 00:16:36.46\00:16:40.33 And so, some of the friends of Job were from Keturah. 00:16:40.33\00:16:44.47 And so, you're talking about the time Jacob lived, 147 years. 00:16:44.47\00:16:49.17 Who knows how long his father lived, Isaac? 00:16:49.17\00:16:53.68 A hundred and eighty years. It's quite a difference. 00:16:53.68\00:16:56.08 Matter of fact, Jacob, when he meets with the pharaoh, 00:16:56.08\00:16:58.85 is complaining. 00:16:58.85\00:17:01.05 He says, "The ages of my days is not equaling 00:17:01.05\00:17:03.52 the age of my fathers." 00:17:03.52\00:17:05.45 He said, "I've worn myself out." 00:17:05.45\00:17:07.46 You know, and all the time he spent out in the fields 00:17:07.46\00:17:09.49 and having four wives, it just cut his life short. 00:17:09.49\00:17:12.36 But he was bemoaning that he wasn't living as long as some 00:17:12.36\00:17:15.30 of the others evidently around then. 00:17:15.30\00:17:17.77 And so, it's not unusual that Job would live that long. 00:17:17.77\00:17:21.30 Who knows who the last longest living person was? 00:17:21.30\00:17:26.24 Moses lived 120 years, Aaron about 123. 00:17:26.24\00:17:31.38 Do you know who just broke--he just broke the mold is way after 00:17:31.38\00:17:35.42 King David said, "Our days of our years will be three score 00:17:35.42\00:17:38.25 and ten," which is how much? 00:17:38.25\00:17:40.69 "And if by reason of strength we make it to 80, 00:17:40.69\00:17:43.66 there's aches and pains." 00:17:43.66\00:17:45.83 That's a rough paraphrase. 00:17:45.83\00:17:47.96 But there was a high priest who watched over King Joash 00:17:47.96\00:17:51.90 named Jehoiada, lived 130 years. 00:17:51.90\00:17:56.24 How many of you heard in the news this week that the last 00:17:56.24\00:18:01.64 American, as far as they know, the last American 00:18:01.64\00:18:06.95 who was born in the 1890s died, 116 years old? 00:18:06.95\00:18:12.72 There's only one person they know of in the world today 00:18:12.72\00:18:15.52 that can say that they lived over 3 centuries. 00:18:15.52\00:18:18.69 In other words, their lives touched the 1800s, 00:18:18.69\00:18:22.03 the 1900s, and the 2000s. 00:18:22.03\00:18:24.37 There's very few people--I used to know people, a lot of people 00:18:24.37\00:18:26.84 that were born in the 1800s, and they're all gone. 00:18:26.84\00:18:30.14 So, then you're finding fewer and fewer people that can 00:18:30.14\00:18:32.31 tell you about World War II that are left. 00:18:32.31\00:18:34.94 You know what I'm saying? 00:18:34.94\00:18:37.15 Well, now they got one lady in Italy, she's 117, 00:18:37.15\00:18:40.62 I think, that's still alive. 00:18:40.62\00:18:42.78 And they showed a picture of her, and she doesn't look like 00:18:42.78\00:18:44.89 she'll be around much longer. 00:18:44.89\00:18:46.86 Sorry, I hope that wasn't unkind, just from the picture. 00:18:46.86\00:18:49.76 But every now and then, someone comes along. 00:18:49.76\00:18:53.06 And so, the Bible comments about how long Job lived. 00:18:53.06\00:18:56.16 Based on the relatives, it seems like that he lived 00:18:56.16\00:19:01.80 during the time of Esau's descendants. 00:19:01.80\00:19:04.81 Like I said, because he lived 200 years, 00:19:04.81\00:19:07.21 you got to give him 200 years. 00:19:07.21\00:19:09.21 So, from 1900 BC to 1700 BC. 00:19:09.21\00:19:12.38 Moses didn't come around for another 100 years, 00:19:12.38\00:19:14.82 so he lived back during that age range. 00:19:14.82\00:19:17.39 That means if Moses wrote the first book in the Bible, 00:19:17.39\00:19:20.76 technically what is the first book in the Bible? 00:19:20.76\00:19:23.76 It's the book of Job. 00:19:23.76\00:19:26.39 I was reading one commentary where they were saying that 00:19:26.39\00:19:29.36 anybody that thinks that the book of Job is just the work of 00:19:29.36\00:19:33.64 someone who wrote a parable doesn't know what they're 00:19:33.64\00:19:36.91 talking about because he said the genius of insight in the 00:19:36.91\00:19:42.98 statements of Job could not come from one author. 00:19:42.98\00:19:46.85 You've got some very bright men. 00:19:46.85\00:19:49.22 Job is a very successful, wealthy man. 00:19:49.22\00:19:52.15 His friends that come are leaders. 00:19:52.15\00:19:54.76 And these are just the chieftains of the region that 00:19:54.76\00:19:57.93 have come, and there's just incredible wisdom there. 00:19:57.93\00:20:01.26 So, this is when we think Job lived. 00:20:01.26\00:20:04.43 Now, where was Uz? Not Oz, Uz. 00:20:04.43\00:20:11.24 Genesis 10, verse 22. 00:20:11.24\00:20:13.88 It's interesting, again, you read the commentary, some says, 00:20:13.88\00:20:16.28 "Well, nobody knows where it was." 00:20:16.28\00:20:18.38 Well, you can actually know relatively close where it was. 00:20:18.38\00:20:20.68 It says, "The sons of Shem were Elam, Asshur, 00:20:20.68\00:20:23.62 Arphaxad, Lud, Aram. 00:20:23.62\00:20:25.92 The sons of Aram were Uz." 00:20:25.92\00:20:28.22 This is now the second person named Uz. 00:20:28.22\00:20:30.69 You notice I'm doing Genesis 10 now. 00:20:30.69\00:20:32.83 "Hul, Gether, and Mash." 00:20:32.83\00:20:35.53 It tells us Uz was also a nephew of Abraham that lived 00:20:35.53\00:20:38.83 in Arabia about 1900 BC. 00:20:38.83\00:20:41.67 Josephus says Uz was--he, Uz, the person Uz founded 00:20:41.67\00:20:47.58 Trachanitus and Damascus. 00:20:47.58\00:20:50.78 Damascus is one of the oldest cities of antiquity, 00:20:50.78\00:20:53.58 but that's further north. 00:20:53.58\00:20:56.12 The land of Uz was--it tells us really in the Bible. 00:20:56.12\00:20:59.82 Jeremiah 25, verse 20, "All the mixed people of all the kings of 00:20:59.82\00:21:04.93 the land of Uz, all the kings of the land of the Philistines, 00:21:04.93\00:21:08.76 namely Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod." 00:21:08.76\00:21:14.04 Jeremiah is talking about the kingdoms that are neighboring 00:21:14.04\00:21:17.11 the south and the east of Israel in that statement. 00:21:17.11\00:21:20.64 So, we're narrowing it down. 00:21:20.64\00:21:23.14 And then if you look in Lamentations, 00:21:23.14\00:21:25.31 this sort of seals it. 00:21:25.31\00:21:27.28 Lamentations 4:21, "Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom, 00:21:27.28\00:21:30.59 you who dwell in the land of Uz." 00:21:30.59\00:21:34.39 So, I've got a little map on the screen. 00:21:34.39\00:21:36.76 You'll see that in the land that's to the east 00:21:36.76\00:21:39.69 of the Jordan, that territory, it was a big region. 00:21:39.69\00:21:42.26 By the way, if you've got, you know, 7,000 sheep and all these 00:21:42.26\00:21:45.70 animals, you got a big pasture land. 00:21:45.70\00:21:48.17 But when you're reading the book of Job, you'll also see book 00:21:48.17\00:21:52.07 of Job talks about when I sat in the city gates. 00:21:52.07\00:21:54.64 So, it's not just a man who lived out in the country. 00:21:54.64\00:21:57.45 And it says his sons each went in their house, not their tent. 00:21:57.45\00:22:01.18 And so, there was a big civilization. 00:22:01.18\00:22:03.92 There to the east of the Jordan valley, the climate 00:22:03.92\00:22:09.56 was very different then than it is now. 00:22:09.56\00:22:12.56 The land of Israel was called the land flowing 00:22:12.56\00:22:14.56 with milk and honey. 00:22:14.56\00:22:16.70 Do you know if you go to the Sahara Desert, they've got 00:22:16.70\00:22:21.07 valleys you drive for just hours, maybe even days off 00:22:21.07\00:22:24.11 into the Sahara, and you'll find just a lake, 00:22:24.11\00:22:27.61 dry lakebeds full of whale bones. 00:22:27.61\00:22:30.91 You'll find rocks that have ancient petroglyph carvings that 00:22:30.91\00:22:37.25 the tribes carved in the rock. 00:22:37.25\00:22:40.19 And they've got hippopotamus and giraffes. 00:22:40.19\00:22:43.89 Well, you got hippos, you have to have water. 00:22:43.89\00:22:46.46 It was a land that used to have a lot more water. 00:22:46.46\00:22:48.80 And so, not only has there been desertification of North Africa, 00:22:48.80\00:22:52.37 but this region changed. 00:22:52.37\00:22:54.80 Used to have a lot more vegetation. 00:22:54.80\00:22:56.77 It was a lot more lush. 00:22:56.77\00:22:58.77 And so, there's a lot more going on now. 00:22:58.77\00:23:01.54 Now, you go to that desert around they call it Mount Seir, 00:23:01.54\00:23:05.75 the Edomites, they were the descendants of Esau. 00:23:05.75\00:23:11.52 Now, it's just desert in that country out there. 00:23:11.52\00:23:15.02 So, that's where Uz was. That's probably where Job lived. 00:23:15.02\00:23:18.39 Now, who was Job? 00:23:18.39\00:23:20.60 The name "Job" signifies sorrowful, or he that weeps. 00:23:20.60\00:23:25.93 You know, one of the things that strikes me, friends, 00:23:25.93\00:23:28.20 is just the very first words of the book, "There was a man." 00:23:28.20\00:23:33.38 The very fact you got a 42 chapter book that begins with, 00:23:33.38\00:23:36.58 "There was a man." 00:23:36.58\00:23:38.75 You know why it says that? 00:23:38.75\00:23:40.68 Because it doesn't say there were men, it says there was 00:23:40.68\00:23:43.28 a man, meaning this is an unusual man. 00:23:43.28\00:23:48.02 This is a man that stands out. 00:23:48.02\00:23:50.39 This is a man who is just one among thousands. 00:23:50.39\00:23:54.73 And made me think of some other places in the Bible. 00:23:54.73\00:23:56.80 You know, in the book of Daniel, when nobody could interpret the 00:23:56.80\00:24:00.80 king's dream, Daniel 2:25, "Then Arioch quickly brought 00:24:00.80\00:24:04.94 Daniel before the king. 00:24:04.94\00:24:06.94 He said, 'I found a man. I found a man.'" 00:24:06.94\00:24:09.34 There is a man. 00:24:09.34\00:24:11.38 You go to Daniel 5, nobody could interpret the handwriting 00:24:11.38\00:24:14.18 on the wall. 00:24:14.18\00:24:15.85 The queen talks to the king. She says, "There is a man." 00:24:15.85\00:24:21.26 But not that many. 00:24:21.26\00:24:23.32 And you find as you read the story of Job 00:24:23.32\00:24:25.23 that Job stands out. 00:24:25.23\00:24:27.10 "There is a man in your kingdom in whom is the spirit 00:24:27.10\00:24:29.53 of the Holy God. 00:24:29.53\00:24:31.33 He can tell you what that writing says." 00:24:31.33\00:24:33.74 Solomon says in Ecclesiastes 7:28, 00:24:33.74\00:24:36.64 "Which my soul still seeks, but I cannot find one man 00:24:36.64\00:24:42.48 among a thousand I have found." 00:24:42.48\00:24:46.15 The Gospel of John, it says, "There was a man sent from God 00:24:46.15\00:24:49.72 whose name was John." 00:24:49.72\00:24:51.99 Something else we find out about Job, it says, "In the land of Uz 00:24:51.99\00:24:56.16 was this man who was perfect and blameless." 00:24:56.16\00:24:59.29 Well, right there you can say that's an unusual man, 00:24:59.29\00:25:02.96 perfect and upright. 00:25:02.96\00:25:05.17 Now, what does that mean? 00:25:05.17\00:25:06.94 First of all, let me just make sure, take a breath, 00:25:06.94\00:25:09.10 look at me, okay? 00:25:09.10\00:25:11.14 We're going to talk about how perfect a Christian is supposed 00:25:11.14\00:25:13.74 to be for just a moment. 00:25:13.74\00:25:15.71 That makes everyone nervous, including me. 00:25:15.71\00:25:17.58 But I just want to read you what the Bible says, then we'll talk 00:25:17.58\00:25:19.68 about what that means, okay? 00:25:19.68\00:25:21.62 But God wants us to be holy, you know that. 00:25:21.62\00:25:25.22 Yes, he wants to bless you, and we all think about God 00:25:25.22\00:25:27.69 wanting us to be happy. 00:25:27.69\00:25:29.22 But even more than your happiness, God's interested 00:25:29.22\00:25:31.09 in your holiness. 00:25:31.09\00:25:32.96 And is it possible--let me read some verses to you. 00:25:32.96\00:25:36.67 Genesis 6:9, "Noah was a just man, perfect 00:25:36.67\00:25:40.97 in his generations." 00:25:40.97\00:25:43.20 Godly man. 00:25:43.20\00:25:45.74 And did God do something unusual through him? 00:25:45.74\00:25:48.01 Ezekiel 14:14, "Though these three men," I told you I'd read 00:25:48.01\00:25:52.75 it again, "Noah, Daniel, and Job were in the land. 00:25:52.75\00:25:55.18 They'll deliver their own souls by their righteousness, 00:25:55.18\00:25:57.92 says the Lord." 00:25:57.92\00:25:59.55 That tells us Noah was a righteous man, 00:25:59.55\00:26:01.49 Daniel was a righteous man, Job was a righteous man. 00:26:01.49\00:26:05.56 But don't forget they're human. 00:26:05.56\00:26:07.86 And so, when you hear about Elijah being a righteous man, 00:26:07.86\00:26:11.07 there you got a man too. 00:26:11.07\00:26:13.10 Boy, 1 on the mountain against 800. 00:26:13.10\00:26:15.04 God had a man. 00:26:15.04\00:26:17.07 When you read in the New Testament and James says, "These 00:26:17.07\00:26:20.71 were men," speaking of Elijah, "subject to the same passions as 00:26:20.71\00:26:23.65 you and me, and yet God declares about them what he wants to 00:26:23.65\00:26:27.85 declare about you," that we fear God and hate evil, 00:26:27.85\00:26:34.76 and that we are walking and living upright lives. 00:26:34.76\00:26:38.66 If Noah did it, if Job did it, if Daniel did it, 00:26:38.66\00:26:43.67 if Elijah did it, then God says, 00:26:43.67\00:26:46.80 "The same way they did it, you can do it." 00:26:46.80\00:26:50.21 God is calling us to be that. 00:26:50.21\00:26:52.37 And you almost never hear that in the church anymore, that it's 00:26:52.37\00:26:54.81 not just about our getting together with our friends. 00:26:54.81\00:26:57.61 The whole purpose of the church is training for holiness to have 00:26:57.61\00:27:00.88 an impact of light and life in a perishing world. 00:27:00.88\00:27:05.62 Job was that kind of person. 00:27:05.62\00:27:07.72 But it's all through the Bible that God is calling believers, 00:27:07.72\00:27:10.43 Old and New Testament, to be like Job, to love the Lord 00:27:10.43\00:27:15.50 and to hate evil, and to walk and be upright. 00:27:15.50\00:27:18.93 Now, what does that mean, to fear God and to hate evil? 00:27:18.93\00:27:23.07 Matthew 6:13, to hate evil means to eschew evil, to avoid it, 00:27:23.07\00:27:28.91 to run the other direction. 00:27:28.91\00:27:31.18 Is there evil in the world? 00:27:31.18\00:27:34.68 Jesus in our Lord's prayer, he said we should pray, "Lead us 00:27:34.68\00:27:37.85 not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one." 00:27:37.85\00:27:42.72 The yearning desire we ought to be praying about every day is, 00:27:42.72\00:27:45.96 "Lord, deliver me from evil." 00:27:45.96\00:27:48.16 We don't want to be around evil. 00:27:48.16\00:27:50.33 And I'm not talking about the evil that chases you down. 00:27:50.33\00:27:54.57 You can't always control that. 00:27:54.57\00:27:56.84 You know, you see things or you happen to be the witness 00:27:56.84\00:27:59.24 of something that you weren't planning. 00:27:59.24\00:28:01.38 But when we pursue it, that's not good. 00:28:01.38\00:28:04.65 Isaiah 33:15, "He who walks righteously and speaks 00:28:04.65\00:28:08.85 uprightly, who despises the gain of oppressors, who gestures with 00:28:08.85\00:28:12.99 his hand refusing bribes," going no, "who stops his ears 00:28:12.99\00:28:17.49 from hearing bloodshed." 00:28:17.49\00:28:19.46 This is where it gets interesting. 00:28:19.46\00:28:21.43 "Stops his ears from hearing of violence." 00:28:21.43\00:28:23.30 You know, one of the characteristics in the days 00:28:23.30\00:28:25.23 of Noah before the world was destroyed, 00:28:25.23\00:28:27.04 the thoughts of men's hearts were only evil continually, 00:28:27.04\00:28:29.50 and there was violence filled the land. 00:28:29.50\00:28:31.37 Do we have that today? 00:28:31.37\00:28:33.04 We may not have the kind of gore and bloodshed 00:28:33.04\00:28:34.91 that you see on battlefronts. 00:28:34.91\00:28:38.88 Instead, where we have it in our country is in our entertainment, 00:28:38.88\00:28:43.25 kind of like the Roman coliseums, except it's called 00:28:43.25\00:28:45.32 a television or a computer monitor today. 00:28:45.32\00:28:48.62 And when it talks about stopping our ears from hearing 00:28:48.62\00:28:52.66 of bloodshed, and shutting our eyes. 00:28:52.66\00:28:55.83 I'm in Isaiah 33:15, "Shutting our eyes from seeing evil, 00:28:55.83\00:29:01.07 he will dwell on high." 00:29:01.07\00:29:03.47 But if we're going out of our way to behold these things 00:29:03.47\00:29:07.81 and to hear these things, a lot of the music today is violent. 00:29:07.81\00:29:12.91 A lot of the programming is violent. 00:29:12.91\00:29:15.78 And I'm probably like a lot of other men out there, boy, 00:29:15.78\00:29:20.62 a good cowboy Indian fight--can you say that anymore? 00:29:20.62\00:29:23.49 Is that politically incorrect? 00:29:23.49\00:29:26.03 No, I can't say that anymore. Cowboy and Native American. 00:29:26.03\00:29:28.00 I'm sorry, I don't mean to be unkind. 00:29:28.00\00:29:30.07 I'm just telling you how crazy it is. 00:29:30.07\00:29:32.00 But who as a kid didn't-- anyone here have a cap gun 00:29:32.00\00:29:34.40 when they were a kid? 00:29:34.40\00:29:36.24 Come on, fess up, you guys. 00:29:36.24\00:29:38.24 I know you're worried that the pacifists around you are 00:29:38.24\00:29:40.41 going to--yeah, just there was just-- 00:29:40.41\00:29:43.01 something about that appeals. 00:29:43.01\00:29:44.85 You know, God makes men where you want to go out and conquer. 00:29:44.85\00:29:46.88 And so, to be entertained by it, whether it's boxing, or football 00:29:46.88\00:29:53.79 is almost equally as violent. 00:29:53.79\00:29:56.02 Guys have to dress up like, you know, they're going to space 00:29:56.02\00:30:00.50 because they get hit so hard. 00:30:00.50\00:30:04.30 Not to mention all the guns, and the shooting, and--but if we 00:30:04.30\00:30:09.07 want to have the experience of Job and the relationship with 00:30:09.07\00:30:11.94 Job, who stops his ears from hearing bloodshed and shuts 00:30:11.94\00:30:14.71 his eyes from seeing evil, he will dwell on high. 00:30:14.71\00:30:18.18 His place will be the defense, the fortress of rocks. 00:30:18.18\00:30:21.08 Bread will be given him, and water will be sure. 00:30:21.08\00:30:23.55 I've heard a lot of Christians quote that verse, speaking 00:30:23.55\00:30:25.99 of the last days if we've got to flee for our faith. 00:30:25.99\00:30:28.29 God says our bread will be given to us, 00:30:28.29\00:30:30.26 and our water will be sure. 00:30:30.26\00:30:32.03 It says, yeah, if you plug your ears from hearing of bloodshed 00:30:32.03\00:30:35.83 and shut your eyes from seeing evil. 00:30:35.83\00:30:38.53 Do we hate evil like Job did? 00:30:38.53\00:30:42.07 Psalm 119, verse 37, "Turn away my eyes." 00:30:42.07\00:30:46.04 This is something that would make a good prayer for us all. 00:30:46.04\00:30:48.54 "Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, 00:30:48.54\00:30:52.15 and revive me in your way." 00:30:52.15\00:30:54.95 How much time is spent looking at goofy, worthless things? 00:30:54.95\00:31:00.96 Ezekiel 12:13, "Let's hear the conclusion of the whole matter. 00:31:00.96\00:31:04.86 Fear God and keep his commandments, 00:31:04.86\00:31:07.30 for this is man's entire duty. 00:31:07.30\00:31:09.53 For God will bring every work into judgment." 00:31:09.53\00:31:11.57 Job was a man that feared God. 00:31:11.57\00:31:13.74 Now, when we say fearing God, I've often heard people say, 00:31:13.74\00:31:17.27 "Well, that doesn't mean-- 00:31:17.27\00:31:19.14 we're not supposed to be afraid of God." 00:31:19.14\00:31:20.88 And I actually have caught myself saying that 00:31:20.88\00:31:22.71 because some people just live in constant fear. 00:31:22.71\00:31:24.51 But you know, as I study that and as I compare it with other 00:31:24.51\00:31:27.55 verses in the Bible, I've had to correct myself. 00:31:27.55\00:31:30.95 It is talking about an awesome reverence, 00:31:30.95\00:31:35.32 but there's a terror connected with it. 00:31:35.32\00:31:39.09 When it says to fear God, if we know how powerful, 00:31:39.09\00:31:43.03 how--yes, he's your father. 00:31:43.03\00:31:45.53 Yes, he's your friend. Yes, he loves you. 00:31:45.53\00:31:48.30 He loves you more than anybody. But he's also a powerful God. 00:31:48.30\00:31:53.21 And he has eternity, he has your eternity in his hands. 00:31:53.21\00:31:56.61 And he can be offended through sin. 00:31:56.61\00:31:59.91 And in that sense, we should hate evil and fear God. 00:31:59.91\00:32:04.72 I think it was Wesley that said, "If I could have 100 men who 00:32:04.72\00:32:09.19 feared nothing but God, I could change the world." 00:32:09.19\00:32:11.89 Someone once said if you don't fear God, 00:32:11.89\00:32:13.93 you'll fear everything else. 00:32:13.93\00:32:15.63 If you do fear God, you fear nothing else. 00:32:15.63\00:32:18.83 And the Lord wants us to have that kind of fear, where really 00:32:18.83\00:32:22.27 we live in his sight, and we do everything in that perspective. 00:32:22.27\00:32:28.01 What's the message for today? 00:32:28.01\00:32:31.25 Revelation 14:6, "I saw another angel flying in the midst of 00:32:31.25\00:32:34.95 heaven with the everlasting gospel to preach to those 00:32:34.95\00:32:37.65 who dwell on the earth, every tribe, tongue, and people." 00:32:37.65\00:32:40.66 This is the last book of the Bible, last message that goes. 00:32:40.66\00:32:43.43 Revelation 14 pictures Jesus coming in the clouds. 00:32:43.43\00:32:46.09 What's the message that is to go to the world before 00:32:46.09\00:32:48.20 the return of Christ? 00:32:48.20\00:32:50.17 And it says, "With a loud voice," 00:32:50.17\00:32:52.37 megaphone is what that means, 00:32:52.37\00:32:54.74 "fear God and give glory to him, 00:32:54.74\00:32:57.81 for the hour of his judgment has come." 00:32:57.81\00:33:00.11 So, obviously you're fearing because this is 00:33:00.11\00:33:02.34 a judgment day coming. 00:33:02.34\00:33:04.51 "Fear God and give glory to him, 00:33:04.51\00:33:06.41 the hour of his judgment has come in. 00:33:06.41\00:33:08.32 Worship him who made the heaven and the earth, and the sea, 00:33:08.32\00:33:10.42 and the springs of waters." 00:33:10.42\00:33:12.52 This is not only talking about a revival of reverence and a holy 00:33:12.52\00:33:15.82 fear of God because there's an impending judgment. 00:33:15.82\00:33:19.76 It says and a revival of genuine worship too. 00:33:19.76\00:33:23.50 Real worship is going to be a God fearing worship. 00:33:23.50\00:33:27.17 God fearing worship will involve reverence in worship. 00:33:27.17\00:33:31.84 You go into a church where it just looks like a hootenanny, 00:33:31.84\00:33:34.78 and everyone's running around, there's no respect, 00:33:34.78\00:33:36.81 there's no reverence, there's no decorum, 00:33:36.81\00:33:39.11 that's a place that doesn't fear God. 00:33:39.11\00:33:41.25 If God could suddenly appear, you would see 00:33:41.25\00:33:43.69 a big change of attitude. 00:33:43.69\00:33:46.35 "The Lord is in his holy temple." 00:33:46.35\00:33:48.02 This is a message that goes to the world. 00:33:48.02\00:33:49.92 It's a message of the experience of Job having this holiness. 00:33:49.92\00:33:54.00 Did Job go through a great trial? 00:33:54.00\00:33:56.90 Is there going to be a time of trouble such as there never 00:33:56.90\00:33:59.10 has been before Jesus comes? 00:33:59.10\00:34:02.07 It's relevant for us then to be studying Job, amen? 00:34:02.07\00:34:06.54 And you can read in Job 1:3, it says, 00:34:06.54\00:34:09.44 "This man was the greatest of all the people of the east." 00:34:09.44\00:34:14.92 Well, you know, that probably segues well into the next verse, 00:34:14.92\00:34:19.79 "Job is a rich man." 00:34:19.79\00:34:23.09 And he founded the computer company, and the Facebook, 00:34:23.09\00:34:29.53 and he was the Rockefeller of his age. 00:34:29.53\00:34:32.70 He was not just a little rich, he was the richest man. 00:34:32.70\00:34:37.44 Some of you would like to get a blank check that said 00:34:37.44\00:34:39.71 Bill Gates on it, or Warren Buffett, 00:34:39.71\00:34:43.91 or one of these guys. 00:34:43.91\00:34:45.81 Back then, if you had a check that said Job on it-- 00:34:45.81\00:34:48.42 I don't know his last name. 00:34:48.42\00:34:50.29 It's just Job Job was his name. You'd be very happy. 00:34:50.29\00:34:53.66 You'd love to get a job from Job, wouldn't you? 00:34:53.66\00:34:57.76 He was a very wealthy man. But what a strange combination. 00:34:57.76\00:35:01.76 You know, Jesus said after the rich young ruler walked away, 00:35:01.76\00:35:05.53 "It's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle 00:35:05.53\00:35:09.37 than for a rich man to get into the kingdom." 00:35:09.37\00:35:11.51 Do you expect Job to be in the kingdom? 00:35:11.51\00:35:14.11 And yet, he wasn't just a little rich, he was fabulously wealthy. 00:35:14.11\00:35:20.38 Someone once said, "In adversity, Job could possess 00:35:20.38\00:35:25.22 his soul in patience because, in prosperity, 00:35:25.22\00:35:29.56 he had not lost his riches." 00:35:29.56\00:35:32.53 He was not possessed by his riches. 00:35:32.53\00:35:35.73 He possessed them. 00:35:35.73\00:35:38.60 Bunyan, John Bunyan, who wrote "Pilgrim's Progress," 00:35:38.60\00:35:40.87 he said, "Gold in the gospel seldom agree. 00:35:40.87\00:35:44.64 Religion always sides with poverty." 00:35:44.64\00:35:48.61 It's not that it never happens, but it's not frequently. 00:35:48.61\00:35:52.15 But it is worthy of mention that Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, 00:35:52.15\00:35:57.42 the great patriarchs, were greatly blessed 00:35:57.42\00:36:01.06 and were very prosperous. 00:36:01.06\00:36:03.46 Now, I want to read something to you in Deuteronomy. 00:36:03.46\00:36:09.43 Job is greatly blessed, and he's blessed because, 00:36:09.43\00:36:12.07 well, the devil's partly right. 00:36:12.07\00:36:14.67 Don't quote me on that. 00:36:14.67\00:36:17.84 He said, "You've put a hedge about Job. 00:36:17.84\00:36:20.51 You've protected all that he has," meaning, 00:36:20.51\00:36:22.84 "He's blessed because you've kept me 00:36:22.84\00:36:25.35 from cursing his stuff." 00:36:25.35\00:36:27.92 And the Lord does say--I want to read Deuteronomy 28. 00:36:27.92\00:36:31.05 I'll read a few verses here. 00:36:31.05\00:36:32.99 I won't read the whole chapter, this is the chapter where God 00:36:32.99\00:36:34.92 talks about the blessing and the cursing. 00:36:34.92\00:36:36.39 How many of you want to be blessed? 00:36:36.39\00:36:38.93 You want to be blessed like Job was blessed, 00:36:38.93\00:36:41.33 including the sufferings of Job? 00:36:41.33\00:36:44.57 If that's what it takes. 00:36:44.57\00:36:46.67 Keep in mind--no, I'll save that for later. 00:36:46.67\00:36:49.84 I don't want to say everything first day. 00:36:49.84\00:36:52.97 Deuteronomy 28, "Now it will come to pass that if you will 00:36:52.97\00:36:56.41 diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God to observe 00:36:56.41\00:37:00.85 carefully all of his commandments that I command you 00:37:00.85\00:37:04.39 today that the Lord your God will set you high above 00:37:04.39\00:37:07.92 the nations of the earth. 00:37:07.92\00:37:09.99 And all these blessings will come upon you and overtake you 00:37:09.99\00:37:13.06 because you obey the voice of the Lord your God." 00:37:13.06\00:37:16.16 There are certain natural blessings that seem to come 00:37:16.16\00:37:18.80 in the wake of obedience. 00:37:18.80\00:37:21.04 You know, if you disobey and you do dumb things, 00:37:21.04\00:37:23.07 bad things happen. 00:37:23.07\00:37:27.44 And here's what he said. 00:37:27.44\00:37:29.74 "These blessings will overtake you." 00:37:29.74\00:37:31.65 You know what that makes it sound like? 00:37:31.65\00:37:33.45 They'll catch up to you. You can't escape them. 00:37:33.45\00:37:36.35 If you obey the Lord. 00:37:36.35\00:37:38.19 How many of you want to be overtaken by blessings? 00:37:38.19\00:37:40.59 "Blessed you will be in the city, and blessed you will be 00:37:40.59\00:37:43.49 in the country." 00:37:43.49\00:37:45.36 The book of Job talks about both. 00:37:45.36\00:37:47.13 "Blessed will be the fruit of your body." 00:37:47.13\00:37:49.03 He was blessed in his family. 00:37:49.03\00:37:50.80 "The produce of your ground and the increase of your herds." 00:37:50.80\00:37:54.17 All these blessings came to Job. 00:37:54.17\00:37:56.17 "The increase of your cattle, the offspring of your flocks. 00:37:56.17\00:37:59.54 Blessed will be your basket and your kneading bowl. 00:37:59.54\00:38:02.18 Blessed you will be when you come in. 00:38:02.18\00:38:04.15 Blessed will you be when you go out. 00:38:04.15\00:38:06.21 The Lord will cause your enemies who rise against you to be 00:38:06.21\00:38:08.82 defeated before your face. 00:38:08.82\00:38:10.69 They will come out against you one way, 00:38:10.69\00:38:12.52 and flee before you seven ways. 00:38:12.52\00:38:14.29 The Lord will command the blessing on your storehouse, 00:38:14.29\00:38:16.83 to which you set your hand. 00:38:16.83\00:38:18.69 He'll bless you in the land which the Lord 00:38:18.69\00:38:20.56 your God has given you. 00:38:20.56\00:38:22.16 The Lord will establish you as a holy people to himself." 00:38:22.16\00:38:24.87 Now, notice it starts out obedience, established 00:38:24.87\00:38:28.40 as a holy people, blessing sandwiched in between. 00:38:28.40\00:38:32.84 That doesn't mean--this is a promise that does speak 00:38:32.84\00:38:35.91 in general terms here. 00:38:35.91\00:38:37.78 That doesn't mean that people who are obedient are always 00:38:37.78\00:38:40.55 blessed in material abundance because sometimes I think 00:38:40.55\00:38:45.25 the devil blesses people with abundance. 00:38:45.25\00:38:49.72 Does that make sense? 00:38:49.72\00:38:51.73 I remember reading the devil will sometimes cast prosperity 00:38:51.73\00:38:55.06 in a person's path to ruin them. 00:38:55.06\00:38:59.20 Just Karen was telling me yesterday on the news, 00:38:59.20\00:39:02.47 somebody won a $400 million jackpot. 00:39:02.47\00:39:07.01 And they said they got a dream that they were supposed 00:39:07.01\00:39:09.74 to pick the numbers. 00:39:09.74\00:39:11.58 I guess in this lottery--I don't play, so I'm not sure, 00:39:11.58\00:39:13.42 but I guess you pick the numbers, I don't know. 00:39:13.42\00:39:16.02 But she was shown the numbers in a dream. 00:39:16.02\00:39:17.72 And I said, "I wonder if the Lord showed her those numbers." 00:39:17.72\00:39:19.65 Karen said, "No, the Lord would never do that." 00:39:19.65\00:39:21.49 And she's probably right. 00:39:21.49\00:39:24.69 Kind of in quiet moments, you wish the Lord would show you 00:39:24.69\00:39:27.20 those numbers, I might to buy a ticket, $400 million, right? 00:39:27.20\00:39:30.80 No, no, no, don't quote me on that either. 00:39:30.80\00:39:34.50 Probably the devil. 00:39:34.50\00:39:36.87 And you know what often happens in those families that suddenly 00:39:36.87\00:39:39.21 come into a great, sudden inheritance? 00:39:39.21\00:39:42.01 Not everybody, but many of them, their lives unravel. 00:39:42.01\00:39:46.08 Sometimes they end up in jail. Some have been murdered. 00:39:46.08\00:39:49.42 I mean, it doesn't end well. 00:39:49.42\00:39:51.12 An inheritance hastily gotten doesn't always bring 00:39:51.12\00:39:53.32 a blessing in its train. 00:39:53.32\00:39:55.89 But Job was able to manage it because his possessions 00:39:55.89\00:39:58.86 did not possess him. 00:39:58.86\00:40:01.66 That's why Jesus said, "A man's life does not consist 00:40:01.66\00:40:03.97 in the abundance of the things he possesses." 00:40:03.97\00:40:07.77 You can become a slave to your possessions. 00:40:07.77\00:40:09.60 The more stuff you have, the more you have to insure, 00:40:09.60\00:40:11.34 the more you have to guard. 00:40:11.34\00:40:13.17 And pretty soon, you can't go anywhere because you 00:40:13.17\00:40:15.28 got to watch your stuff. 00:40:15.28\00:40:17.31 That's why Jesus, when he called people to follow him, he says, 00:40:17.31\00:40:19.81 "You're going to have a life of being an itinerant teacher." 00:40:19.81\00:40:23.32 They walked away from their nets, they walked away from 00:40:23.32\00:40:25.42 their cash registers because your stuff will tie you down. 00:40:25.42\00:40:32.26 All right, back to Job. 00:40:32.26\00:40:35.33 I don't want to overwhelm you today. 00:40:35.33\00:40:37.37 So, he's a wealthy man. 00:40:37.37\00:40:40.50 1 Timothy 6:17, the Bible tells us in the early church, 00:40:40.50\00:40:44.54 they had some people that were rich. 00:40:44.54\00:40:47.11 "Command those who are rich in this present age not to be 00:40:47.11\00:40:49.54 haughty, not to trust in uncertain riches, 00:40:49.54\00:40:52.55 but in the living God." 00:40:52.55\00:40:54.48 The Bible doesn't say money is the root of all evil, 00:40:54.48\00:40:56.42 the love of money. 00:40:56.42\00:40:58.19 Don't trust in it because you can lose everything all at once, 00:40:58.19\00:41:00.49 did you know that? 00:41:00.49\00:41:02.32 Did Job? Overnight, he lost it all. 00:41:02.32\00:41:06.16 Don't trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God who richly 00:41:06.16\00:41:09.53 gives us all things to enjoy. 00:41:09.53\00:41:11.77 Let them do good. 00:41:11.77\00:41:13.60 "They that be rich, be rich in good works, 00:41:13.60\00:41:15.50 willing to give, willing to share." 00:41:15.50\00:41:18.01 He's not condemning them for richness. 00:41:18.01\00:41:19.74 He's condemning them for hoarding the riches. 00:41:19.74\00:41:22.91 Now, we're going to go off--the scene changes now. 00:41:22.91\00:41:24.88 We talked about Job, we talked about where he was, 00:41:24.88\00:41:27.48 and when he was, and who he was. 00:41:27.48\00:41:30.99 We learned something about the faith of job, 00:41:30.99\00:41:33.59 and the fortune of job, and the family of Job. 00:41:33.59\00:41:35.62 And then suddenly, it says there was a day. 00:41:35.62\00:41:37.96 The scene changes. 00:41:37.96\00:41:39.83 Now, we're going from the earth to heaven. 00:41:39.83\00:41:43.63 And it says there was a day when the sons of God came to present 00:41:43.63\00:41:46.74 themselves before the Lord, and Satan came among them. 00:41:46.74\00:41:49.77 First of all, who are these sons of God that come to present 00:41:49.77\00:41:53.88 themselves before the Lord? 00:41:53.88\00:41:56.18 You can read in Job 38:7, when the--speaking of the creation, 00:41:56.18\00:42:00.92 "When the morning stars sang together, 00:42:00.92\00:42:03.05 and all the sons of God shouted for joy." 00:42:03.05\00:42:07.46 Well, God's creating the world, so they're not humans. 00:42:07.46\00:42:11.03 God uses the word "angels" for angels. 00:42:11.03\00:42:14.46 But it talks about the sons of God. 00:42:14.46\00:42:17.07 If you read in the Luke-- in the Gospel of Luke, 00:42:17.07\00:42:19.27 the genealogy of Jesus, it goes back to Adam. 00:42:19.27\00:42:24.14 And you'll notice it says in Luke chapter 3:37, 00:42:24.14\00:42:27.11 "Which was the son of Methuselah, 00:42:27.11\00:42:30.68 which was the son of Enoch, which was the son of Jared, 00:42:30.68\00:42:33.92 which was the son of Mahalalel, 00:42:33.92\00:42:36.48 which was the son of Cainan, which was the son of Enosh, 00:42:36.48\00:42:39.75 which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, 00:42:39.75\00:42:43.56 which was the son of God." 00:42:43.56\00:42:47.13 All of us are born. 00:42:47.13\00:42:49.23 Adam was not born; he was created. 00:42:49.23\00:42:51.37 Adam was given dominion of the world. 00:42:51.37\00:42:53.97 That's what it says in Genesis. 00:42:53.97\00:42:56.00 Adam was the son of God who was the leader 00:42:56.00\00:42:58.51 and representative of our planet. 00:42:58.51\00:43:01.01 But Adam lost it because whoever you obey, 00:43:01.01\00:43:04.35 you become the servant, Romans 6. 00:43:04.35\00:43:06.45 You're the servant to the one you obey. 00:43:06.45\00:43:08.98 And Adam lost his dominion, and Eve, of the planet. 00:43:08.98\00:43:12.32 And the devil claimed the planet. 00:43:12.32\00:43:14.56 So, the sons of God are the representatives of the unfallen 00:43:14.56\00:43:18.06 worlds that God has out there in space. 00:43:18.06\00:43:21.03 By the way, there's a great quote in the book 00:43:21.03\00:43:23.37 "Desire of Ages," 834, "The sons of God are the representatives 00:43:23.37\00:43:27.74 of the unfallen worlds." 00:43:27.74\00:43:30.14 And I tend to agree with the author there. 00:43:30.14\00:43:33.41 If you look, you'll see that our planet is not the only planet 00:43:33.41\00:43:36.24 that God has made. 00:43:36.24\00:43:38.41 It says in Colossians 1:16, "For by him were all things created 00:43:38.41\00:43:43.15 in heaven and in earth." 00:43:43.15\00:43:44.92 He's created things in heaven. 00:43:44.92\00:43:46.82 Hebrews 1:2, "In these last days, God has spoken to us by 00:43:46.82\00:43:49.69 his Son, who he has appointed heir of all things, 00:43:49.69\00:43:52.29 through whom he made the," plural, "worlds." 00:43:52.29\00:43:55.63 Not just one. He's got other unfallen worlds. 00:43:55.63\00:43:58.73 You know the parable of the man who's got how many sheep 00:43:58.73\00:44:01.70 and he loses one? 00:44:01.70\00:44:03.64 Ninety-nine sheep. 00:44:03.64\00:44:05.44 Loses one, he leaves the 99 to go find the 1 lost sheep. 00:44:05.44\00:44:09.31 Well, the other ones aren't lost. 00:44:09.31\00:44:11.61 Everybody in this world, how many have sinned in this world? 00:44:11.61\00:44:14.32 Everybody. 00:44:14.32\00:44:16.65 And so, he goes then to look for that one. 00:44:16.65\00:44:20.62 All the unfallen worlds, Jesus left them safely and came 00:44:20.62\00:44:23.12 to this world to get this lost sheep. 00:44:23.12\00:44:26.53 Revelation 5:13, "And every creature in heaven 00:44:26.53\00:44:29.13 and on earth." 00:44:29.13\00:44:31.63 These days, he's spoken to us by his Son. 00:44:31.63\00:44:33.97 And so, and you read in Revelation 4, "Around the throne 00:44:33.97\00:44:36.47 of God were 24 seats, and upon these seats I saw 00:44:36.47\00:44:41.48 24 elders sitting clothed in white raiment, 00:44:41.48\00:44:45.38 and on their head crowns of God." 00:44:45.38\00:44:47.58 Why have they got crowns? 00:44:47.58\00:44:49.42 They're the leaders of unfallen worlds. 00:44:49.42\00:44:51.39 Now, there's probably a lot more than just 24. 00:44:51.39\00:44:53.52 Twenty-four are mentioned in Revelation, 00:44:53.52\00:44:55.76 but God has many unfallen worlds. 00:44:55.76\00:44:58.36 And then Satan comes to this meeting because he says, 00:44:58.36\00:45:01.40 "I represent the world." 00:45:01.40\00:45:03.30 One of the things before Satan speaks, God says, 00:45:03.30\00:45:05.40 "Where did you come from?" 00:45:05.40\00:45:07.34 He says, "I came from the earth." 00:45:07.34\00:45:09.10 You notice the devil doesn't say, "I came from hell." 00:45:09.10\00:45:11.61 He doesn't say, "I came from Hades." 00:45:11.61\00:45:14.28 He says, "I came from earth." 00:45:14.28\00:45:16.78 He could have said, "I came from Sacramento." 00:45:16.78\00:45:20.48 He could have--I mean, he's somewhere on the planet. 00:45:20.48\00:45:23.82 Because he says, "Look, you've got the representatives 00:45:23.82\00:45:25.85 of the other worlds. 00:45:25.85\00:45:28.06 Earth needs a representative. 00:45:28.06\00:45:29.69 I have dominion, so I'm coming to represent them." 00:45:29.69\00:45:33.73 But God speaks first, and he says to the devil, "Have you 00:45:33.73\00:45:36.26 considered my servant Job?" 00:45:36.26\00:45:39.97 Now, that's wonderful to me that God is bragging in heaven 00:45:39.97\00:45:45.24 about someone on earth. 00:45:45.24\00:45:47.88 For me, this is the best part of today's message, that God-- 00:45:47.88\00:45:51.91 not only God because God knows everything. 00:45:51.91\00:45:54.32 God knows the good and bad. 00:45:54.32\00:45:56.22 But the angels are hearing the name of the victorious 00:45:56.22\00:45:59.29 on earth in heaven. 00:45:59.29\00:46:01.56 Did Jesus tell us that's the case? 00:46:01.56\00:46:04.43 Look in Matthew 10:32. 00:46:04.43\00:46:06.76 "Therefore whoever confesses me before men, 00:46:06.76\00:46:09.80 I will confess before my Father who is in heaven." 00:46:09.80\00:46:13.60 He says it a little bit differently in Luke 12:8, 00:46:13.60\00:46:17.24 "Also I say whoever confesses me before men, 00:46:17.24\00:46:19.81 the son of man will confess before the angels. 00:46:19.81\00:46:22.34 Before my Father," he says, "and before the angels." 00:46:22.34\00:46:25.71 Wouldn't you like to have your name brought up 00:46:25.71\00:46:28.12 in a positive way in heaven? 00:46:28.12\00:46:31.32 Wouldn't you like to be able to have God say, 00:46:31.32\00:46:33.59 "Have you considered my servant? 00:46:33.59\00:46:36.06 He's down there, but he's not your servant, Satan. 00:46:36.06\00:46:38.09 He's my servant. 00:46:38.09\00:46:39.96 You say that all the men belong to you. 00:46:39.96\00:46:41.60 Not all of them. 00:46:41.60\00:46:43.23 Job serves me." 00:46:43.23\00:46:44.80 And wouldn't you like the Lord to be able to point down 00:46:44.80\00:46:46.70 and say, "Doug serves me"? 00:46:46.70\00:46:49.24 Insert your name there. 00:46:49.24\00:46:52.01 The whole universe is watching what's happening in this world. 00:46:52.01\00:46:55.48 The Bible says what's going on on our planet, 00:46:55.48\00:46:57.35 it's a theater of the universe. 00:46:57.35\00:47:00.65 1 Corinthians 4:9, "For I think that God has displayed us, 00:47:00.65\00:47:04.75 the apostles, last as men condemned to death. 00:47:04.75\00:47:08.22 For we have been made a spectacle to the world, 00:47:08.22\00:47:11.53 both to angels and to men." 00:47:11.53\00:47:14.73 Do we have guardian angels that we can't see? 00:47:14.73\00:47:17.50 So, are angels watching what's happening here on earth? 00:47:17.50\00:47:21.07 They are. They see what goes on. 00:47:21.07\00:47:24.21 That's why, you know, I love that verse in the Bible. 00:47:24.21\00:47:27.58 Sorry, 2 Chronicles 16:9, "For the eyes of the Lord run to and 00:47:27.58\00:47:32.71 fro throughout the whole earth to show himself strong on behalf 00:47:32.71\00:47:36.38 of those whose heart is loyal to him." 00:47:36.38\00:47:39.32 God is just scanning through the world, saying, 00:47:39.32\00:47:42.02 "Someone down there, believe in me and I will 00:47:42.02\00:47:45.09 show mighty things through you." 00:47:45.09\00:47:47.30 That's why it says there was a man in the land of Uz. 00:47:47.30\00:47:49.96 God said, "Ah." 00:47:49.96\00:47:51.97 Yet God doesn't say, "Have you considered my servants." 00:47:51.97\00:47:54.74 Isn't that sad? 00:47:54.74\00:47:56.44 God said, "Have you considered my servant?" 00:47:56.44\00:47:59.67 Unfortunately, those who serve God down here 00:47:59.67\00:48:02.61 are not the majority. 00:48:02.61\00:48:04.68 Don't you and I want to give God more names to cite in heaven? 00:48:04.68\00:48:10.82 That's my goal for my life, and as a pastor for your life. 00:48:10.82\00:48:15.82 Jesus said, "Many will come to me in that day saying, 00:48:15.82\00:48:17.83 'Lord, Lord,'" 00:48:17.83\00:48:19.33 and he'll say, "I don't know you." 00:48:19.33\00:48:21.06 But did God know Job? 00:48:21.06\00:48:24.20 Hebrews 4:13, "There is no creature hidden from his sight, 00:48:24.20\00:48:28.54 but all things are naked and open to the eyes of him with 00:48:28.54\00:48:32.01 whom we must give an account." 00:48:32.01\00:48:34.21 Heaven's watching it all. 00:48:34.21\00:48:35.98 Now, final point and I'm almost done. 00:48:35.98\00:48:37.85 After God says, "Have you seen my servant Job," 00:48:37.85\00:48:40.28 well, the devil, he says, "I've come from earth. 00:48:40.28\00:48:43.85 It's my dominion." 00:48:43.85\00:48:45.92 Satan is called the prince of this world. 00:48:45.92\00:48:47.96 And you look around, you can just see, 00:48:47.96\00:48:49.62 even though there's a lot of beauty in the world that God, 00:48:49.62\00:48:51.76 the residue of his creation can be seen. 00:48:51.76\00:48:54.76 Satan has kind of claimed the world. 00:48:54.76\00:48:56.67 Even Jesus said, John 12:31, "Now is the judgment of this 00:48:56.67\00:49:00.50 world, and the ruler of this world will be cast out." 00:49:00.50\00:49:03.57 Who's he talking about? 00:49:03.57\00:49:05.87 "Satan is coming, the ruler of this world, 00:49:05.87\00:49:07.74 and he has nothing in me." 00:49:07.74\00:49:09.58 The prince of this world will be cast out. 00:49:09.58\00:49:13.05 Does the devil still have access to heaven? 00:49:13.05\00:49:17.69 Before Jesus came, the devil evidently could--you know, 00:49:17.69\00:49:21.96 he was kicked out of heaven, but he wasn't kicked 00:49:21.96\00:49:24.09 out of wherever this meeting was. 00:49:24.09\00:49:25.96 We don't know where this meeting was. 00:49:25.96\00:49:27.76 It says, "There was a meeting." 00:49:27.76\00:49:29.40 You can carefully deduce the meeting is not on earth 00:49:29.40\00:49:31.00 because Satan says, "I've come from the earth." 00:49:31.00\00:49:32.90 So, in order for Satan to say, "I came from the earth," 00:49:32.90\00:49:34.70 the meeting isn't on the earth. 00:49:34.70\00:49:36.94 But I don't think the meeting's in heaven either 00:49:36.94\00:49:39.84 because Satan was cast out of heaven. 00:49:39.84\00:49:44.01 He can't go back in. 00:49:44.01\00:49:46.15 Does the Lord go visit his different creatures? 00:49:46.15\00:49:49.55 Did God come down to earth to walk and talk 00:49:49.55\00:49:51.79 with Adam and Eve when he made them? 00:49:51.79\00:49:54.02 Sure, the Lord goes throughout his domain. 00:49:54.02\00:49:57.23 And so, wherever this meeting was, 00:49:57.23\00:49:59.29 he called the representatives. 00:49:59.29\00:50:01.06 They're giving reports on wonderful things happening 00:50:01.06\00:50:02.80 in their various realms. 00:50:02.80\00:50:04.83 And Satan comes, and you could just hear-- 00:50:04.83\00:50:07.07 you could hear the murmuring among all the other sons of God, 00:50:07.07\00:50:09.40 "Oh, now look who's here." 00:50:09.40\00:50:11.27 Did they all know who Satan is? 00:50:11.27\00:50:13.14 Yeah. 00:50:13.14\00:50:15.01 And he's coming, and he's not doing or saying good things. 00:50:15.01\00:50:17.61 Satan claims to be the leader. 00:50:17.61\00:50:20.42 And then Satan says, "Do you know my servant--" 00:50:20.42\00:50:24.29 Or God says, "Have you considered my servant Job?" 00:50:24.29\00:50:26.49 Here's a question. 00:50:26.49\00:50:28.59 Did the devil know who Job was? 00:50:28.59\00:50:31.96 Now, is the devil omniscient? 00:50:31.96\00:50:34.36 God knows all things, he's omniscient. 00:50:34.36\00:50:36.36 No. 00:50:36.36\00:50:38.00 Is the devil omnipresent? 00:50:38.00\00:50:39.77 No. He's not omnipotent. 00:50:39.77\00:50:43.04 No, only God is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent. 00:50:43.04\00:50:47.01 He knows everything, he can be everywhere, he sees everything, 00:50:47.01\00:50:50.91 he has all power. 00:50:50.91\00:50:53.21 Why--and does the devil operate through his fallen angels? 00:50:53.21\00:50:58.25 So, sometimes when you and I say the devil's tempting me, 00:50:58.25\00:51:00.49 the devil doesn't even know who you are probably. 00:51:00.49\00:51:03.93 He doesn't know every name of all 7 billion people 00:51:03.93\00:51:06.39 on the planet. 00:51:06.39\00:51:08.03 Most of them he's not worried about. 00:51:08.03\00:51:09.66 I mean, if Jesus could say, "I know you not," to the lost, 00:51:09.66\00:51:12.50 then certainly there's some the devil's going to say, 00:51:12.50\00:51:14.34 "I know you not." 00:51:14.34\00:51:16.27 Matter of fact, I got a quote that proves that. 00:51:16.27\00:51:18.91 These seven sons were trying to cast out a devil in Acts 19:15. 00:51:18.91\00:51:24.41 And the devil speaks through the man. 00:51:24.41\00:51:27.05 They didn't know the Lord. 00:51:27.05\00:51:29.12 They're just claiming the name of Jesus. 00:51:29.12\00:51:31.55 And they said, "In the name of Jesus who Paul preaches, 00:51:31.55\00:51:33.89 come out." 00:51:33.89\00:51:36.06 And the devil answered, listened to what he said, 00:51:36.06\00:51:38.29 "Jesus I know." 00:51:38.29\00:51:40.66 I remember him before I was cast out of heaven. 00:51:40.66\00:51:43.43 "And Paul I know." 00:51:43.43\00:51:45.63 I know Paul. 00:51:45.63\00:51:47.77 I put a thorn in his side, and he is a thorn in my side. 00:51:47.77\00:51:51.44 I know Paul. "But who are you?" 00:51:51.44\00:51:57.65 Now, here's the question. 00:51:57.65\00:52:00.15 Do you want the devil to know who you are? 00:52:00.15\00:52:05.69 Don't you want to live the kind of life where you're a thorn 00:52:05.69\00:52:10.13 in the devil's side? 00:52:10.13\00:52:13.53 Now, you don't want to raise your hand, and shout, and jump 00:52:13.53\00:52:16.23 up and down, "Yes, yes, I want the devil to know who I am," 00:52:16.23\00:52:19.80 because when you do that, you know, the Bible says 00:52:19.80\00:52:24.17 all that live godly will suffer persecution. 00:52:24.17\00:52:26.57 And everyone in here want to suffer persecution? 00:52:26.57\00:52:30.05 I don't want persecution, but I want to please the Lord, 00:52:30.05\00:52:33.35 and I want to be godly, and that may bring persecution. 00:52:33.35\00:52:37.69 So, the question is, do you want the devil to know who you are? 00:52:37.69\00:52:41.09 Do you want to live a life so that God says, 00:52:41.09\00:52:43.96 "Have you considered my servant," and name your name? 00:52:43.96\00:52:48.10 This is one of the wonderful things about the book of Job, 00:52:48.10\00:52:50.67 "There was a man." 00:52:50.67\00:52:52.67 And there was a man back then that went through a great trial, 00:52:52.67\00:52:55.10 and God ends up blessing him. 00:52:55.10\00:52:56.97 He brings him through his trial. 00:52:56.97\00:52:59.07 But God had somebody he could point to on earth 00:52:59.07\00:53:01.44 that was proving the devil wrong. 00:53:01.44\00:53:03.81 You know why this is such an important message? 00:53:03.81\00:53:06.21 It's about the great controversy. 00:53:06.21\00:53:08.92 The devil says, "God cannot be obeyed, God is not fair. 00:53:08.92\00:53:11.99 It's impossible for people to serve God. 00:53:11.99\00:53:14.29 He expects too much." 00:53:14.29\00:53:16.62 And God says, "Job is a happy man, he's a blessed man. 00:53:16.62\00:53:21.83 And it's possible for any man to have that relationship." 00:53:21.83\00:53:26.20 And Job disproves the devil's claims. 00:53:26.20\00:53:31.94 And God wants you and I-- before Jesus comes back, 00:53:31.94\00:53:35.58 he wants a church, a glorified church without spot 00:53:35.58\00:53:38.58 or wrinkle to be living the kind of lives that Job lived. 00:53:38.58\00:53:41.85 Don't you want that experience? 00:53:41.85\00:53:44.19 Well, God can help you have that experience 00:53:44.19\00:53:46.65 because he is faithful. 00:53:46.65\00:53:48.49 And what he did for Job, he can do for us. 00:53:48.49\00:53:50.56 We just need that kind of love. 00:53:50.56\00:53:52.73 Doug: I love the quote, "The greatest want of the world 00:53:52.73\00:53:55.50 is the want of men, men who will stand for the right, 00:53:55.50\00:53:58.60 though the heavens fall." 00:53:58.60\00:54:00.74 Yet studies are showing for several years now that secular 00:54:00.74\00:54:03.84 media and culture have sought to portray men 00:54:03.84\00:54:06.71 as the family idiots. 00:54:06.71\00:54:09.08 Sadly, respect for the role of fathers and husbands 00:54:09.08\00:54:12.65 has reached an all-time low. 00:54:12.65\00:54:14.92 So now, as the dispirited men abandon their roles of godly 00:54:14.92\00:54:18.49 leadership, it's not surprising that we're experiencing 00:54:18.49\00:54:21.76 a moral free-fall in our country. 00:54:21.76\00:54:23.89 That's why, starting September 30, 00:54:23.89\00:54:25.99 I'll be presenting a new program called "Mighty Men of God." 00:54:25.99\00:54:30.17 Using biblical principles, this encouraging four-part series 00:54:30.17\00:54:34.10 will address how to be a loving father, faithful husband, 00:54:34.10\00:54:37.14 and all-around man of God in the family, 00:54:37.14\00:54:39.87 church, and nation. 00:54:39.87\00:54:41.81 Please plan now to join me for this live event, and learn 00:54:41.81\00:54:44.51 from the Word how to live courageously for the king. 00:54:44.51\00:54:48.52 male announcer: Did you know this boat could share the gospel 00:54:53.42\00:54:55.49 with 20,000 people, or a car like this one could reach 00:54:55.49\00:54:59.39 10,000 souls seeking hope in Jesus? 00:54:59.39\00:55:03.30 If you have a vehicle you're not using and would like to reach 00:55:03.30\00:55:05.90 hearts for the kingdom of God, prayerfully consider donating 00:55:05.90\00:55:09.24 your vehicle to Amazing Facts today. 00:55:09.24\00:55:12.04 It's easy to turn your unneeded car, boat, RV, 00:55:12.04\00:55:15.68 motorcycle, even ATVs and jet skis 00:55:15.68\00:55:18.81 into a soul-winning vehicle for Christ, 00:55:18.81\00:55:21.42 and get a tax deduction. 00:55:21.42\00:55:23.59 Amazing Facts will arrange to pick up your vehicle 00:55:23.59\00:55:26.19 and provide you with a tax deductible receipt. 00:55:26.19\00:55:29.09 The proceeds from the resale will be used to share 00:55:29.09\00:55:31.36 God's truth with millions of people around the world. 00:55:31.36\00:55:35.93 Don't leave your vehicle in the garage collecting dust. 00:55:35.93\00:55:38.93 Use it to transform lives through Amazing Facts. 00:55:38.93\00:55:42.77 Contact us today, and let us help turn your car, boat, RV, 00:55:42.77\00:55:46.34 or motorcycle into lives saved for Christ. 00:55:46.34\00:55:49.88 [music] 00:55:51.28\00:56:00.92 Doug: Hello, friends. 00:56:02.49\00:56:03.83 We're here in the Philippines overlooking the Taal volcano 00:56:03.83\00:56:07.20 and lake, which is one of the most interesting pieces 00:56:07.20\00:56:09.93 of geography in the whole world. 00:56:09.93\00:56:12.20 For one thing, this great caldera was once 00:56:12.20\00:56:14.94 the biggest volcano in the world. 00:56:14.94\00:56:17.57 And now, it holds a lake that holds another volcano, 00:56:17.57\00:56:20.91 that has another little lake in it, 00:56:20.91\00:56:23.55 that has another little island in it. 00:56:23.55\00:56:26.08 This volcano has erupted six times in a major way 00:56:26.08\00:56:29.32 since the 1500s. 00:56:29.32\00:56:31.85 and even in 1911, there was an eruption where over 00:56:31.85\00:56:34.52 1,300 people died, killed by the smoke and the ash 00:56:34.52\00:56:38.36 that covered the community. 00:56:38.36\00:56:40.66 There were tsunamis that came from the lake and destroyed 00:56:40.66\00:56:43.00 the villages that surrounded the borders of the lake. 00:56:43.00\00:56:45.60 In fact, this is one of the most carefully monitored 00:56:45.60\00:56:48.54 seismic places in the Philippines. 00:56:48.54\00:56:51.31 This volcano is being watched all the time. 00:56:51.31\00:56:53.71 And they've noticed as of 2006 that it appears 00:56:53.71\00:56:56.61 that the water temperatures are going up. 00:56:56.61\00:56:59.15 There's increased seismic activity. 00:56:59.15\00:57:01.58 In other words, they know that this volcano 00:57:01.58\00:57:04.19 is a ticking time bomb prepared to blow. 00:57:04.19\00:57:07.36 And it's very interesting because this place 00:57:07.36\00:57:09.42 is a place of great seismic activity. 00:57:09.42\00:57:12.03 But in spite of the fact that volcanologists know 00:57:12.03\00:57:14.56 this is going to blow again someday, 00:57:14.56\00:57:16.63 it is a popular tourist destination. 00:57:16.63\00:57:18.97 They're fighting for the real estate. 00:57:18.97\00:57:20.80 They're building like mad, and sit on the edge of disaster. 00:57:20.80\00:57:23.77 It makes us think about how God has given us so many warnings in 00:57:23.77\00:57:27.48 his Word that the world is going to end, that Jesus is going to 00:57:27.48\00:57:30.95 come, that the heavens will dissolve with a great noise, 00:57:30.95\00:57:33.68 and the elements will melt with fervent heat. 00:57:33.68\00:57:36.35 Seeing then that all these things will be dissolved, 00:57:36.35\00:57:39.05 what kind of people should we be in all holy conversation 00:57:39.05\00:57:42.56 and godliness? 00:57:42.56\00:57:44.53 Friends, are you becoming distracted with the tranquil 00:57:44.53\00:57:46.39 views of the world, or are you preparing for the next world? 00:57:46.39\00:57:50.03 Are you getting ready for the big bang?
