It's been 2,000 years 00:00:09.54\00:00:10.85 since the glorious light of the cross 00:00:10.88\00:00:12.63 illuminated the world veiled in darkness and confusion 00:00:12.66\00:00:15.54 about the character of God. 00:00:15.57\00:00:17.51 And still today the greatest need of mankind 00:00:17.54\00:00:19.94 is a revelation of God's love 00:00:19.97\00:00:21.72 as revealed in the life of Christ. 00:00:21.75\00:00:24.00 Amazing Facts presents the Everlasting Gospel 00:00:24.03\00:00:27.13 with Pastor Doug Batchelor, coming to you each week 00:00:27.16\00:00:30.03 from Sacramento Central Church in sunny California. 00:00:30.06\00:00:33.14 Discover hidden treasures in God's Word today. 00:00:33.17\00:00:36.14 We have been going through a series 00:00:39.69\00:00:42.45 for the last four studies together 00:00:42.48\00:00:46.77 dealing with the subject of Jesus 00:00:46.80\00:00:48.98 throughout the Bible. 00:00:49.01\00:00:50.56 And principally we've been talking about 00:00:50.59\00:00:53.12 how we can see Christ in the types 00:00:53.15\00:00:57.27 and the stories, the characters of the Old Testament. 00:00:57.30\00:01:01.47 This morning will be the fifth installment 00:01:01.50\00:01:03.69 in that series looking at Jesus in a specially the lives 00:01:03.72\00:01:09.24 of the Old Testament prophets Elijah and Elisha. 00:01:09.27\00:01:14.83 And in our Scripture reading 00:01:14.86\00:01:17.92 you heard there in Luke 4 00:01:17.95\00:01:19.75 that right after the temptation when Christ goes to His hometown 00:01:19.78\00:01:25.30 and He begins His ministry. 00:01:25.33\00:01:28.93 If you got a red-letter edition of the Bible, 00:01:28.96\00:01:32.27 He says in Luke 4, 00:01:32.30\00:01:33.66 the Spirit of the Lord is upon me, 00:01:33.69\00:01:35.47 He's anointed me to preach. 00:01:35.50\00:01:37.41 And then He tells us about Elijah and Elisha. 00:01:37.44\00:01:42.71 And after He says that the people get ready, 00:01:42.74\00:01:45.33 they are gonna throw Him off the cliff. 00:01:45.36\00:01:46.74 You know why? 00:01:46.77\00:01:48.16 Because Christ is saying 00:01:48.19\00:01:50.59 that Elijah and Elisha were prophets of God 00:01:50.62\00:01:53.77 but they ministered to Gentiles. 00:01:53.80\00:01:57.17 Never really aggravated the Jews in Jesus' hometown 00:01:57.20\00:02:00.93 but both Elijah and Elisha 00:02:00.96\00:02:02.95 are in many respects types of Christ. 00:02:02.98\00:02:06.91 You know, I enjoy looking through a kaleidoscope 00:02:06.94\00:02:12.81 and it's fun to sometimes you adjust 00:02:12.84\00:02:16.89 and you look at some beautiful pictures 00:02:16.92\00:02:18.10 and especially if you get something 00:02:18.13\00:02:19.24 that's got a lot of color 00:02:19.27\00:02:20.31 and interesting shape you look through it. 00:02:20.34\00:02:22.71 It's always distorted somewhat by the kaleidoscope 00:02:22.74\00:02:25.96 but it can still be very attractive. 00:02:25.99\00:02:28.64 Well the Old Testament presents a kaleidoscope of Jesus Christ. 00:02:28.67\00:02:33.75 And wherever you look it's not an exact representation 00:02:33.78\00:02:37.10 but its beautiful pictures of Christ 00:02:37.13\00:02:40.01 and of His sacrifice. 00:02:40.04\00:02:42.17 And you'll also find that especially true today 00:02:42.20\00:02:45.15 as we look at the examples of Elijah and Elisha. 00:02:45.18\00:02:50.11 Now why are we looking at Elijah and Elisha 00:02:50.14\00:02:52.69 and studying the life of Christ? 00:02:52.72\00:02:54.32 Well, for one thing, there are about 00:02:54.35\00:02:57.19 20 chapters in the Bible 00:02:57.22\00:02:59.02 that deal with Elijah and Elisha. 00:02:59.05\00:03:01.51 If you go from 1 Kings 17:1 00:03:01.54\00:03:05.95 all the way to 2 Kings 13, 00:03:05.98\00:03:09.39 It's all talking about the life miracles and adventures 00:03:09.42\00:03:12.58 of this incredible prophetic tag team. 00:03:12.61\00:03:16.77 And I was talking to Karen about 00:03:16.80\00:03:18.45 how they illustrate, how they worked together. 00:03:18.48\00:03:20.19 Tag teams probably not the best illustration 00:03:20.22\00:03:22.72 only places as a kid I ever saw a tag team was in this, 00:03:22.75\00:03:25.79 this wrestling that they have. 00:03:25.82\00:03:29.85 Not very real, you know what I mean? 00:03:29.88\00:03:32.14 But probably would be more accurate 00:03:32.17\00:03:34.48 to refer to them as a baton pass 00:03:34.51\00:03:37.09 because there actually was a little bit of overlap 00:03:37.12\00:03:39.28 between the ministries of Elijah and Elisha. 00:03:39.31\00:03:42.05 Elisha and it's easy to confuse them 00:03:42.08\00:03:43.86 because their names sound the same. 00:03:43.89\00:03:45.92 Elisha means my God is Savior. 00:03:45.95\00:03:48.99 Elijah means my God is Jehovah. 00:03:49.02\00:03:50.90 Elijah was the senior, the one who came first. 00:03:50.93\00:03:54.43 Elisha was trained as his apprentice 00:03:54.46\00:03:57.75 but he carried on the work of Elijah 00:03:57.78\00:03:59.99 and actually doubled it in some respects. 00:04:00.02\00:04:03.41 There are many similarities between 00:04:03.44\00:04:05.33 Elijah and Elisha and even Jesus. 00:04:05.36\00:04:09.08 They all three had a ministry 00:04:09.11\00:04:10.64 that even reached to the Gentiles. 00:04:10.67\00:04:12.89 You never hear about Mrs. Elijah, 00:04:12.92\00:04:15.99 Mrs. Elisha or Mrs. Jesus. 00:04:16.02\00:04:18.48 Even the people have tried to say that 00:04:18.51\00:04:19.80 Jesus and Mary Magdalene 00:04:19.83\00:04:20.92 had something going on that's totally a fable. 00:04:20.95\00:04:24.61 Their ministry was totally to reach and to save God's people. 00:04:24.64\00:04:28.53 And as we study today 00:04:28.56\00:04:29.70 I think you're gonna see there are number comparisons. 00:04:29.73\00:04:32.64 Now Christ made some, 00:04:32.67\00:04:34.36 first of all don't forget the beginning of Jesus' ministry 00:04:34.39\00:04:37.30 He cites these two prophets 00:04:37.33\00:04:39.70 that were a tag team there as an example of His ministry. 00:04:39.73\00:04:44.79 The last prophecy in the Old Testament talks about 00:04:44.82\00:04:48.54 "Behold, I send you Elijah the prophet," 00:04:48.57\00:04:50.70 Malachi 4:5. 00:04:50.73\00:04:53.50 And then when John the Baptist came 00:04:53.53\00:04:55.02 the angel said John the Baptist 00:04:55.05\00:04:56.52 would come in the spirit and the power of Elijah. 00:04:56.55\00:05:00.91 Now who was the first one who came in the spirit 00:05:00.94\00:05:03.30 and power of Elijah? 00:05:03.33\00:05:08.31 Wasn't John the Baptist, even before John the Baptist 00:05:08.34\00:05:10.64 someone came in the spirit and power of Elijah. 00:05:10.67\00:05:13.15 Who got a double portion of Elijah's spirit? 00:05:13.18\00:05:16.23 Elisha was the first one to come in the spirit 00:05:16.26\00:05:18.50 and the power of Elijah then John the Baptist. 00:05:18.53\00:05:22.27 Now is that it or is there more? 00:05:22.30\00:05:24.75 Let me read something from the words of Jesus, 00:05:24.78\00:05:26.56 Matthew 17. 00:05:26.59\00:05:27.71 You're gonna need a pencil or I hope you can turn quickly 00:05:27.74\00:05:32.14 and God willing I'll be able to post these 00:05:32.17\00:05:33.84 at the central website. 00:05:33.87\00:05:35.06 We put the other notes from this message 00:05:35.09\00:05:37.11 or this series at the saccentral.org website. 00:05:37.14\00:05:40.88 But I'd like you to follow along if you can. 00:05:40.91\00:05:44.05 Matthew 17:11, Christ is speaking here 00:05:44.08\00:05:47.02 and He said, notice very carefully, 00:05:47.05\00:05:50.52 "Indeed Elijah is coming." 00:05:50.55\00:05:54.19 Now, is coming, is that the present, 00:05:54.22\00:05:56.72 past or future tense? 00:05:56.75\00:05:58.88 "He is coming," future, "and will restore all things. 00:05:58.91\00:06:03.14 But I say to you that Elijah has come" 00:06:03.17\00:06:06.76 that past or present? 00:06:06.79\00:06:09.06 Past, "He has come already, and they did not know him 00:06:09.09\00:06:12.10 but did to him whatever they wished. 00:06:12.13\00:06:14.48 Likewise the Son of Man is about to suffer at their hands.' 00:06:14.51\00:06:17.97 And then the disciples understood, 00:06:18.00\00:06:19.38 He spoke to them of John the Baptist." 00:06:19.41\00:06:21.80 And again in Matthew 11 Jesus says that 00:06:21.83\00:06:24.48 John the Baptist was the one 00:06:24.51\00:06:25.81 who came in the spirit and power of Elijah. 00:06:25.84\00:06:28.99 He was the first one 00:06:29.02\00:06:30.05 but there's a future example and even Christ said, 00:06:30.08\00:06:32.65 what they did to John they are about to do to me. 00:06:32.68\00:06:35.11 So there's a parallels between the life of Elijah 00:06:35.14\00:06:38.75 and John the Baptist and Jesus. 00:06:38.78\00:06:41.00 Did you get that? 00:06:41.03\00:06:42.77 So I'm not trying to detract 00:06:42.80\00:06:44.27 that John the Baptist came in the spirit and power of Elijah. 00:06:44.30\00:06:48.47 Christ has many similarities with Elijah 00:06:48.50\00:06:52.12 and listen not only are there going to be 00:06:52.15\00:06:55.45 12 times 12,000 last day apostles call the 144,000. 00:06:55.48\00:07:00.66 There's gonna be another army of Elijah's in the last days. 00:07:00.69\00:07:05.09 He says Elijah will come again. 00:07:05.12\00:07:07.38 Remember what it said there in Malachi 4, 00:07:07.41\00:07:11.18 not only was Elijah gonna come 00:07:11.21\00:07:13.76 to restore the hearts of the fathers to the sons 00:07:13.79\00:07:17.22 and the sons of the fathers. 00:07:17.25\00:07:18.65 But he said, "Lest I come 00:07:18.68\00:07:20.45 and smite the earth with a curse." 00:07:20.48\00:07:22.57 Before the final seven last plagues 00:07:22.60\00:07:25.75 God is gonna send the Elijah message again 00:07:25.78\00:07:28.02 and the same way John the Baptist came to prepare 00:07:28.05\00:07:30.09 the world for Jesus' first coming. 00:07:30.12\00:07:32.61 He's gonna have an army of John's 00:07:32.64\00:07:34.20 or Elijah's to prepare the world 00:07:34.23\00:07:36.27 for the second coming of Jesus. 00:07:36.30\00:07:37.70 Does that make sense? 00:07:37.73\00:07:39.41 Okay and some of them might be 00:07:39.44\00:07:40.83 walking around right now. 00:07:40.86\00:07:43.28 So going in the Old Testament 00:07:43.31\00:07:45.00 Elijah in one way is a type of Christ 00:07:45.03\00:07:46.96 because he sort of comes out of nowhere 00:07:46.99\00:07:49.48 and he disappears like he came. 00:07:49.51\00:07:52.32 Speaking of Melchizedek, another type a Christ, 00:07:52.35\00:07:55.74 it says without beginning or end 00:07:55.77\00:07:57.72 just sort of comes and disappears. 00:07:57.75\00:08:00.14 Jesus has no beginning or end. 00:08:00.17\00:08:03.02 He is the Alpha and the Omega. 00:08:03.05\00:08:04.69 And so that's one way were Elijah is like that. 00:08:04.72\00:08:07.70 Elijah was fearless when it came 00:08:07.73\00:08:09.95 to talking with the common people, 00:08:09.98\00:08:12.47 priests or kings. 00:08:12.50\00:08:14.41 First time Elijah appears, 00:08:14.44\00:08:16.89 and here we're sort of meeting Elijah, 00:08:16.92\00:08:18.59 he walks into the presence of King Ahab and he says, 00:08:18.62\00:08:23.77 "Thus says the Lord with an alt 00:08:23.80\00:08:25.34 there's going to be neither dew nor rain 00:08:25.37\00:08:27.21 according to my word for these years." 00:08:27.24\00:08:30.04 Somehow he gets right through the security forces 00:08:30.07\00:08:32.12 and the guard around the king. 00:08:32.15\00:08:33.34 He makes his pronouncement 00:08:33.37\00:08:34.85 then he goes back the other way. 00:08:34.88\00:08:38.05 And that was really something 00:08:38.08\00:08:39.62 because these ancient kings you know, 00:08:39.65\00:08:42.30 you could assassinate a king if you get close enough. 00:08:42.33\00:08:44.31 They didn't have rifles back then 00:08:44.34\00:08:46.49 and if you have a gift to bring to the king 00:08:46.52\00:08:48.06 you bring your gift to the couriers. 00:08:48.09\00:08:50.83 You'd stop you know, 50 paces from the king 00:08:50.86\00:08:54.14 than they did examine your gift 00:08:54.17\00:08:55.60 and then they show it to the king. 00:08:55.63\00:08:56.98 But you couldn't get, 00:08:57.01\00:08:58.19 you tried to approach too close to king 00:08:58.22\00:08:59.87 and the bodyguards will get you. 00:08:59.90\00:09:02.14 So the fact that Elijah got through all of that, 00:09:02.17\00:09:04.13 he makes his declaration 00:09:04.16\00:09:05.21 and he somehow while they are all in shock, 00:09:05.24\00:09:06.52 slips out again and they can't find him. 00:09:06.55\00:09:09.02 And they searched the whole country looking for him. 00:09:09.05\00:09:11.28 After Jesus ascended to heaven 00:09:11.31\00:09:12.72 also they had problems finding Him. 00:09:12.75\00:09:16.12 And it says that from the time of this declaration now 00:09:16.15\00:09:19.93 there follows three and a half years of famine 00:09:19.96\00:09:24.01 where God miraculously provides for Elijah. 00:09:24.04\00:09:28.85 And you can read about this here in 1 Kings 17:13, 00:09:28.88\00:09:36.02 Elijah now goes and he stays 00:09:36.05\00:09:37.53 with the gentile woman during this time, 00:09:37.56\00:09:39.64 a widow and he says, get me something to eat. 00:09:39.67\00:09:43.55 By the way, how many years did Jesus minister? 00:09:43.58\00:09:48.21 Three and a half years. 00:09:48.24\00:09:49.27 Okay, don't forget that, another type of Christ there. 00:09:49.30\00:09:53.46 He goes, at first he's fed by ravens at the brook 00:09:53.49\00:09:55.84 and then he-- God says to go stay with this gentile woman. 00:09:55.87\00:09:58.87 What does woman represent? A church. 00:09:58.90\00:10:02.32 Did Christ begin a new ministry 00:10:02.35\00:10:04.78 after His life to take the message 00:10:04.81\00:10:08.39 beyond the Jews to the Gentiles? 00:10:08.42\00:10:10.89 Matter of fact by the end of the first century 00:10:10.92\00:10:12.75 there were more Gentiles reading the Bible then Jews. 00:10:12.78\00:10:16.44 A transition happened in history. 00:10:16.47\00:10:18.39 The gospel now went to this Gentile bride. 00:10:18.42\00:10:21.84 Sort of like story of Ruth here. 00:10:21.87\00:10:25.68 And so Elijah is sent to this Gentile woman 00:10:25.71\00:10:28.07 who lives up by Tyre. 00:10:28.10\00:10:30.19 By the way Jesus also performed a miracle 00:10:30.22\00:10:32.47 for a Gentile woman. 00:10:32.50\00:10:33.83 Remember that her daughter 00:10:33.86\00:10:35.40 was afflicted with a demon and Christ says, 00:10:35.43\00:10:38.13 it's not appropriate to give the children's bread to the dogs 00:10:38.16\00:10:41.21 and she said even the dogs get the crumbs 00:10:41.24\00:10:42.98 that fall from the children's table. 00:10:43.01\00:10:44.88 He says great is your faith, He healed her daughter. 00:10:44.91\00:10:47.07 That was also an analogy about Christ 00:10:47.10\00:10:49.55 was going to break this insulation 00:10:49.58\00:10:52.40 around the Jewish nation 00:10:52.43\00:10:53.46 and take the gospel beyond just the Jews. 00:10:53.49\00:10:56.29 Whoever believes in Christ 00:10:56.32\00:10:57.82 then becomes a child of Abraham. 00:10:57.85\00:11:01.39 When he first meets her there's a famine, 00:11:01.42\00:11:02.92 it's going on for years, and nobody has any food. 00:11:02.95\00:11:06.38 And He says to her, can you get me a drink of water? 00:11:06.41\00:11:09.10 She's going to get a drink of water 00:11:09.13\00:11:10.45 and as she goes He says 00:11:10.48\00:11:11.51 and bring me a cake in your hand. 00:11:11.54\00:11:13.51 She says, oh, man of God. 00:11:13.54\00:11:15.15 She can tell from his attire he's a prophet. 00:11:15.18\00:11:17.49 She said, I'm gathering a couple of sticks right now 00:11:17.52\00:11:20.39 and I'm going to make my last meal 00:11:20.42\00:11:22.60 and my son and I are gonna die. 00:11:22.63\00:11:24.75 Because all we've got now is one handful 00:11:24.78\00:11:26.56 of flour in the bottom of the barrel. 00:11:26.59\00:11:28.49 You ever heard the expression, 00:11:28.52\00:11:29.55 getting to the bottom of the barrel? 00:11:29.58\00:11:30.88 That's where it comes from, the story. 00:11:30.91\00:11:33.59 And we got a little bit of oil to make the bread 00:11:33.62\00:11:36.82 and that's all we have. 00:11:36.85\00:11:37.96 And he says to her, "Do not fear," 1 King 17:13. 00:11:37.99\00:11:43.65 "Do as you have said 00:11:43.68\00:11:44.85 but make a small cake from it first and bring it to me. 00:11:44.88\00:11:48.85 Afterward make some for you, yourself and your son." 00:11:48.88\00:11:52.82 Well, that takes a lot of faith. 00:11:52.85\00:11:55.05 He says bring it to me and it will multiply. 00:11:55.08\00:11:58.05 Listen to what he said afterward. 00:11:58.08\00:11:59.76 "For thus says the Lord God 00:11:59.79\00:12:01.67 the bin of flower will not be used up 00:12:01.70\00:12:04.01 nor shall the jar of oil run dry 00:12:04.04\00:12:06.71 until the day the Lord sends rain on the earth." 00:12:06.74\00:12:10.22 Christ multiplied bread miraculously, didn't He? 00:12:10.25\00:12:14.19 When He multiplied bread did He say to the disciples, 00:12:14.22\00:12:16.85 tell you what, you take that little boy's bread 00:12:16.88\00:12:18.42 and you give it to the children 00:12:18.45\00:12:19.91 or you eat it yourself or did Jesus say, 00:12:19.94\00:12:22.01 bring it to me first? 00:12:22.04\00:12:24.14 They brought it to Christ, 00:12:24.17\00:12:26.13 He blessed it then the miracle happened. 00:12:26.16\00:12:28.89 We bring our bread to Jesus 00:12:28.92\00:12:30.35 whether it's the bread you might have in your wallet 00:12:30.38\00:12:32.31 or your purse or this bread. 00:12:32.34\00:12:34.28 When you study in the morning you say, 00:12:34.31\00:12:35.64 Lord, this is just the ink on paper 00:12:35.67\00:12:37.32 unless You perform a miracle 00:12:37.35\00:12:38.76 and You multiply You feed my soul. 00:12:38.79\00:12:41.48 And so for the remainder of that famine 00:12:41.51\00:12:44.27 every day that woman took the wooden lid of that barrel, 00:12:44.30\00:12:47.22 she reached in and there was more flour. 00:12:47.25\00:12:50.00 Do you ever eat a meal on your plate and say, 00:12:50.03\00:12:52.85 well, I am going to eat half of this 00:12:52.88\00:12:54.09 but I'm enjoying this so much 00:12:54.12\00:12:55.78 I don't want to eat the last bite, 00:12:55.81\00:12:56.84 I'm gonna cut that last bite in half and make it two. 00:12:56.87\00:12:59.13 Have you ever done that? 00:12:59.16\00:13:00.19 Then you say, oh, man, it's so good. 00:13:00.22\00:13:01.25 I am gonna cut that last bite in half and make it two. 00:13:01.28\00:13:03.77 Well, that's what she kept doing, 00:13:03.80\00:13:04.83 she kept reaching in, just taking half of it 00:13:04.86\00:13:06.96 and it was enough for everybody. 00:13:06.99\00:13:08.07 She reach in there, there's always more there, 00:13:08.10\00:13:10.76 never got to the end until the rain came. 00:13:10.79\00:13:13.73 A miracle of multiplication of bread 00:13:13.76\00:13:16.14 and oil which is also what Jesus did, 00:13:16.17\00:13:19.44 He multiplied bread and every day 00:13:19.47\00:13:21.48 we ask Him to multiply bread for us, don't we. 00:13:21.51\00:13:25.79 He was not afraid to confront false prophets and priests. 00:13:25.82\00:13:30.65 Matter of fact it almost cost Him His life 00:13:30.68\00:13:33.29 when He said, "Woe unto you scribes 00:13:33.32\00:13:35.91 and Pharisees hypocrites!" 00:13:35.94\00:13:38.20 Did Elijah also confront the false prophets 00:13:38.23\00:13:41.56 and priests on Mount Carmel? 00:13:41.59\00:13:43.99 And did they then put His name on a poster? 00:13:44.02\00:13:47.21 Jezebel was looking through the land for Him, 00:13:47.24\00:13:50.52 His life was threatened because of it. 00:13:50.55\00:13:53.14 When He gathered everybody together on Mount Carmel 00:13:53.17\00:13:57.04 for that great big showdown 00:13:57.07\00:13:59.49 he said, "Come near unto me." 00:13:59.52\00:14:01.59 So the people came near unto Him. 00:14:01.62\00:14:03.50 There was a revival after He called everybody 00:14:03.53\00:14:06.72 in the kingdom to come near unto Him. 00:14:06.75\00:14:09.14 Does Jesus say, come unto me 00:14:09.17\00:14:11.26 and you will find rest for your souls? 00:14:11.29\00:14:14.77 With Elijah and Elisha this is great victory, 00:14:14.80\00:14:18.97 I'm sorry, with Elijah and Jesus 00:14:19.00\00:14:21.40 there's this great victory on the mountain, 00:14:21.43\00:14:24.25 showdown there on Mount Carmel 00:14:24.28\00:14:25.78 about the true God and a counterfeit god. 00:14:25.81\00:14:29.52 You know when Christ came, 00:14:29.55\00:14:30.84 had the religious leaders substituted the truth 00:14:30.87\00:14:33.35 with a counterfeit gospel. 00:14:33.38\00:14:36.12 He constantly had to say, you say 00:14:36.15\00:14:38.76 but God says you say but I say. 00:14:38.79\00:14:41.39 And they just-- they completely eclipsed 00:14:41.42\00:14:43.71 the truth with man-made laws and traditions. 00:14:43.74\00:14:46.58 And Jesus had to pull all that aside 00:14:46.61\00:14:48.86 and they hated Him for it. 00:14:48.89\00:14:50.05 But there was a big showdown because of that. 00:14:50.08\00:14:53.22 Elijah had a showdown on Mount Carmel, 00:14:53.25\00:14:56.01 Christ had a showdown on Mount Calvary. 00:14:56.04\00:14:59.11 And Christ said, it is finished 00:14:59.14\00:15:00.64 and there was a victory there. 00:15:00.67\00:15:02.70 God's presence was seen when Elijah prayed, 00:15:02.73\00:15:06.90 the heavens parted and fire came down. 00:15:06.93\00:15:10.27 Now fire comes down for Jesus as well. 00:15:10.30\00:15:14.59 Elijah praise and there's a great rain 00:15:14.62\00:15:17.08 at the end of three and a half years. 00:15:17.11\00:15:18.74 Are you with me? 00:15:18.77\00:15:20.56 What happens at the end of three and a half years 00:15:20.59\00:15:22.48 of Christ ministry? 00:15:22.51\00:15:23.54 Does Jesus pray in John 17 00:15:23.57\00:15:25.91 and John 14 the God will send 00:15:25.94\00:15:27.42 the Holy Spirit to the disciples? 00:15:27.45\00:15:29.40 There's a great rain. 00:15:29.43\00:15:30.46 Do they get baptized with tons of fire? 00:15:30.49\00:15:33.35 After three and a half years 00:15:33.38\00:15:35.07 the rain comes, there's a storm. 00:15:35.10\00:15:38.24 And then Elijah has to run. 00:15:38.27\00:15:40.11 After three and a half years 00:15:40.14\00:15:42.30 Jesus pours the Holy Spirit out on the church 00:15:42.33\00:15:45.97 and then the disciples have to hide. 00:15:46.00\00:15:47.42 There's a great persecution that takes place. 00:15:47.45\00:15:51.34 Did Elijah fast for 40 days in the wilderness? 00:15:51.37\00:15:56.60 Are you with me? 00:15:56.63\00:15:57.66 How many-- I'm assuming 00:15:57.69\00:15:58.72 you guys know the fundamentals of the Bible. 00:15:58.75\00:16:00.66 We might have visitors who don't know 00:16:00.69\00:16:02.04 the stories in the Bible 00:16:02.07\00:16:03.28 but Elijah fast for 40 days in the wilderness. 00:16:03.31\00:16:06.01 The interesting thing is 00:16:06.04\00:16:07.34 Elijah meets an angel in the wilderness 00:16:07.37\00:16:09.42 who feeds him this very good food evidently 00:16:09.45\00:16:12.25 because it's so good that he runs-- 00:16:12.28\00:16:15.58 you know they do a lot of modern research 00:16:15.61\00:16:17.33 these days for these triathlon athletes 00:16:17.36\00:16:20.24 but what is the best diet to have 00:16:20.27\00:16:21.73 the greatest endurance to go the farthest? 00:16:21.76\00:16:24.64 They are to find out what that Angel fed Elijah 00:16:24.67\00:16:27.74 because I tell you, boy, they win the Tour de France 00:16:27.77\00:16:30.63 if they could just find out what was in that. 00:16:30.66\00:16:32.66 But an angel feeds Elijah and then he goes 40 days 00:16:32.69\00:16:36.47 and 40 nights to Mount Sinai and God speaks to him there. 00:16:36.50\00:16:40.92 Jesus goes 40 days and 40 nights fasting 00:16:40.95\00:16:43.32 and at the end it says an angel came 00:16:43.35\00:16:45.66 and ministered to Him and they fed Him miraculously 00:16:45.69\00:16:49.61 at the end of that 40 days and 40 nights. 00:16:49.64\00:16:52.24 Another parallel between Jesus and Elijah. 00:16:52.27\00:16:57.55 Now there's at this point after He leaves Mount Sinai 00:16:57.58\00:17:01.95 his 40 days and 40 nights in the wilderness, 00:17:01.98\00:17:03.74 and I'm shortening the ministry of Elijah a little bit. 00:17:03.77\00:17:06.53 He's then told to go and anoint his replacement. 00:17:06.56\00:17:10.21 He is to pass the baton to a young man, 00:17:10.24\00:17:13.08 he's the wealthy son of a ranching family. 00:17:13.11\00:17:16.07 His name is Elisha. 00:17:16.10\00:17:18.43 And you can read about the call of Elisha in 1 Kings 19:19. 00:17:18.46\00:17:23.90 So Elijah departs and he goes to this area here 00:17:23.93\00:17:29.70 where the Mr. Shaphat was his name lived. 00:17:29.73\00:17:33.10 He had this ranch, wealthy man. 00:17:33.13\00:17:35.25 And he finds Elisha plowing with 12 yoke of oxen before him 00:17:35.28\00:17:40.92 and he was with the 12. 00:17:40.95\00:17:42.62 Now you just got to get this picture, 00:17:42.65\00:17:44.22 so you understand what this young man is giving up. 00:17:44.25\00:17:48.52 Today if you've got to one of these big John Deere tractors 00:17:48.55\00:17:52.54 you don't spend $200,000 on a John Deere tractor. 00:17:52.57\00:17:56.95 I mean these tractors today I've seen them. 00:17:56.98\00:17:58.77 You go out to Texas, these tractor sometimes 00:17:58.80\00:18:01.72 they will pull 50 yards 00:18:01.75\00:18:03.77 worth of plow equipment behind it. 00:18:03.80\00:18:05.72 They are powerful tractors. 00:18:05.75\00:18:07.31 Inside these tractors they've got GPS, 00:18:07.34\00:18:09.81 they got air-conditioning, they've got television 00:18:09.84\00:18:12.84 because they-- I am not kidding. You think I'm kidding? 00:18:12.87\00:18:14.66 How many of you know what I'm saying is true? 00:18:14.69\00:18:16.45 They're driven by GPS, farmers 00:18:16.48\00:18:18.04 just kind of, they are watching TV 00:18:18.07\00:18:19.67 and one of the things turns red, GPS turns around. 00:18:19.70\00:18:22.00 That's how they get these perfect lines. 00:18:22.03\00:18:24.93 They got Jacuzzi? No, it's not true. 00:18:24.96\00:18:26.62 They get just about everything in these tractors, right? 00:18:26.65\00:18:30.21 Well, back in Bible times the farmers, 00:18:30.24\00:18:32.99 you know, they might have one mule to pull a plow. 00:18:33.02\00:18:36.57 If you had a pair of oxen, you are wealthy. 00:18:36.60\00:18:38.88 If you had 12 pair of oxen, you are pretty wealthy. 00:18:38.91\00:18:44.35 So Elisha got a wealthy family 00:18:44.38\00:18:46.74 but he's a very spiritual young man. 00:18:46.77\00:18:48.41 And when a poor prophet name Elijah comes along, 00:18:48.44\00:18:51.72 I mean, Elijah lives out there 00:18:51.75\00:18:53.21 by the creek and he's fed by ravens. 00:18:53.24\00:18:56.61 He didn't have a lot, he didn't have a mansion. 00:18:56.64\00:18:59.54 He has to go stay with the widow 00:18:59.57\00:19:02.76 and he comes along and he says look, 00:19:02.79\00:19:06.70 because you love Lord I got good news, 00:19:06.73\00:19:08.20 you get to follow me and you got to leave all this. 00:19:08.23\00:19:12.58 Isn't that what Jesus really did with the apostles? 00:19:12.61\00:19:15.81 He said, are you willing to leave your father's boats 00:19:15.84\00:19:18.06 and your father's net, You follow Me 00:19:18.09\00:19:19.45 I'll teach you to fish for men. 00:19:19.48\00:19:21.60 So Elijah does basically the same thing 00:19:21.63\00:19:23.96 that Jesus did with Peter, James, John and Matthew. 00:19:23.99\00:19:26.21 He said, leave your tax booth with all your money, follow me. 00:19:26.24\00:19:31.12 And did He do it? 00:19:31.15\00:19:32.92 And the way He did it back then 00:19:32.95\00:19:34.70 is He cast His mantle on the shoulders of Elisha. 00:19:34.73\00:19:38.32 You ever heard the expression, the mantle fell upon him? 00:19:38.35\00:19:41.41 That it means someone else is now the successor. 00:19:41.44\00:19:43.70 Comes from this one story in the Bible 00:19:43.73\00:19:45.64 where Elijah put his mantle on the shoulders 00:19:45.67\00:19:47.93 of Elisha saying, 00:19:47.96\00:19:49.47 God has chosen you to train and follow me. 00:19:49.50\00:19:53.08 You are to do my work and finish my work 00:19:53.11\00:19:55.34 that I'm starting. 00:19:55.37\00:19:56.51 This is what the apostles did for Jesus. 00:19:56.54\00:19:59.06 So another parallel between Elijah and Jesus. 00:19:59.09\00:20:01.45 He called and disciple others to cover for Him 00:20:01.48\00:20:05.58 when He would ascend. 00:20:05.61\00:20:07.42 Not too many people ascend to heaven miraculously 00:20:07.45\00:20:10.53 but Jesus did and Elijah did. I'm getting ahead of myself now. 00:20:10.56\00:20:15.42 So he calls Elisha and He puts his mantle on him. 00:20:15.45\00:20:19.13 That mantle is like a robe, 00:20:19.16\00:20:20.75 it represents the righteousness of Christ. 00:20:20.78\00:20:23.25 Christ then empowers us to do His work. 00:20:23.28\00:20:26.05 Now there's another story 00:20:26.08\00:20:27.16 that happens between the end of First Kings 00:20:27.19\00:20:30.12 before you get to Second Kings. 00:20:30.15\00:20:32.12 It's a story of Naboth's vineyard. 00:20:32.15\00:20:34.75 There was this good man that lived in Samaria 00:20:34.78\00:20:37.19 by the name of Naboth. 00:20:37.22\00:20:38.86 He owned a beautiful vineyard not far from the king's palace. 00:20:38.89\00:20:42.36 Ahab wanted Naboth's vineyard. 00:20:42.39\00:20:45.49 But according to the Jewish law it was to go to his posterity, 00:20:45.52\00:20:48.44 it wasn't to change hands between the tribes. 00:20:48.47\00:20:51.42 And so when Ahab said, hey, I'd like to buy your vineyard. 00:20:51.45\00:20:53.57 Naboth says, your highness, you know I'd like to help 00:20:53.60\00:20:55.29 but the Law of Moses says 00:20:55.32\00:20:57.32 this is to be part of our posterity, 00:20:57.35\00:20:59.61 it stays with our tribe and I can't sell it to you. 00:20:59.64\00:21:03.48 He get so mad, he wants it. 00:21:03.51\00:21:06.02 He just can't stop thinking about it. 00:21:06.05\00:21:08.23 So with the help of Jezebel 00:21:08.26\00:21:09.76 they concoct a scheme to get false witnesses, 00:21:09.79\00:21:13.74 to falsely accuse Naboth 00:21:13.77\00:21:17.34 of blaspheming God and blaspheming the king, 00:21:17.37\00:21:21.79 religion and government. 00:21:21.82\00:21:23.71 They take him out of the city, they execute him. 00:21:23.74\00:21:27.73 An innocent man is killed 00:21:27.76\00:21:29.59 so that they can seize his vineyard. 00:21:29.62\00:21:33.42 What is that vineyard? 00:21:33.45\00:21:35.13 Jesus tells us in Isaiah 5, 00:21:35.16\00:21:38.12 that vineyard is a type for the people of Israel. 00:21:38.15\00:21:40.71 Did Jesus tell parables 00:21:40.74\00:21:43.09 about how a vineyard was un-rightly stolen? 00:21:43.12\00:21:47.12 That the Sun, the rightful owner 00:21:47.15\00:21:48.90 was killed to seize his vineyard? Yeah. 00:21:48.93\00:21:52.69 So another parable here in the same way that's-- 00:21:52.72\00:21:56.81 Oh, and by the way, 00:21:56.84\00:22:00.28 Jesus in the same way that Naboth died 00:22:00.31\00:22:03.76 and Jesus died, Elijah then goes on 00:22:03.79\00:22:06.09 and tells King Ahab is that you're going to suffer 00:22:06.12\00:22:10.00 the same fate as Naboth 00:22:10.03\00:22:11.15 because you killed an innocent man. 00:22:11.18\00:22:14.85 And so Naboth is an example of Christ 00:22:14.88\00:22:16.87 there in Elijah's pronouncement. 00:22:16.90\00:22:21.22 And then one of the great miracles 00:22:21.25\00:22:22.88 is how he ascends to Heaven. 00:22:22.91\00:22:24.81 Now I am gonna spend a few minutes on this, 00:22:24.84\00:22:26.17 turn in your Bibles to 2 Kings 2. 00:22:26.20\00:22:29.96 2 Kings 2 and it says, 00:22:29.99\00:22:36.57 "It came to pass when the Lord was about to take Elijah 00:22:36.60\00:22:40.60 into heaven by a whirlwind." 00:22:40.63\00:22:43.49 Now did God tell Jesus to tell the disciples in advance 00:22:43.52\00:22:48.17 that you're going to be going to heaven 00:22:48.20\00:22:50.92 in some unusual way? 00:22:50.95\00:22:53.39 Did Christ say, "I am not always be with you, 00:22:53.42\00:22:55.08 I'm going away" And they said, "Where are you going?" 00:22:55.11\00:22:57.34 So Christ warned them in advance. 00:22:57.37\00:22:58.80 Elijah told Elisha in advance, I'm going up to happen. 00:22:58.83\00:23:02.46 That he said to Elisha, go with me to Gilgal. 00:23:02.49\00:23:05.50 And he goes to Gilgal 00:23:05.53\00:23:06.63 and he teaches the people the word there 00:23:06.66\00:23:08.72 because he's about to ascend. 00:23:08.75\00:23:11.09 And they said, you know, he's going to go to heaven. 00:23:11.12\00:23:13.79 And then he goes from Gilgal and he goes next to Bethel. 00:23:13.82\00:23:17.51 And then he goes to Jericho 00:23:17.54\00:23:19.61 and then he goes down to the Jordan. 00:23:19.64\00:23:21.20 And he stops and he visits all the sons of the prophets 00:23:21.23\00:23:23.69 before he ascends to heaven. 00:23:23.72\00:23:25.90 After Christ rose from the dead, did He go around 00:23:25.93\00:23:28.56 and visit the disciples on different occasions 00:23:28.59\00:23:31.08 to strengthen them in the word 00:23:31.11\00:23:32.74 before He ascended to heaven? 00:23:32.77\00:23:34.50 So there's another parallel. 00:23:34.53\00:23:36.63 Now finally he goes to the Jordan River 00:23:36.66\00:23:40.39 and he crosses the Jordan River. 00:23:40.42\00:23:41.88 By the way the Jordan in the Bible 00:23:41.91\00:23:43.09 is the symbol of death. 00:23:43.12\00:23:45.92 And Elisha crosses-- the Jordan parts miraculously. 00:23:45.95\00:23:50.40 And they go over together. 00:23:50.43\00:23:53.29 You know the Jordan represents death. 00:23:53.32\00:23:55.65 What is normally, 00:23:55.68\00:23:57.76 what do you think of when you think of the Jordan River? 00:23:57.79\00:23:59.63 Isn't it baptism? 00:23:59.66\00:24:01.18 Baptism is a symbol of death, burial and resurrection. 00:24:01.21\00:24:06.11 How do most people get to the other side of death? 00:24:06.14\00:24:10.63 The Jordan, you got to go through death. 00:24:10.66\00:24:12.75 The children of Israel before they got to the Promised Land 00:24:12.78\00:24:15.09 they had to cross the Jordan River. 00:24:15.12\00:24:16.97 Before me, most people are gonna ever get to the Promised Land 00:24:17.00\00:24:19.26 they got to go through the Jordan. 00:24:19.29\00:24:20.63 See what I'm saying? 00:24:20.66\00:24:22.56 Now it says, Elijah comes to the borders of the river, 00:24:22.59\00:24:24.99 he takes off his mantle, he strikes the water. 00:24:25.02\00:24:27.78 I don't have time to read the whole story to you 00:24:27.81\00:24:29.59 but I am summarizing it. 00:24:29.62\00:24:31.48 The river parts miraculously, 00:24:31.51\00:24:33.29 the way it did for the children of Israel 00:24:33.32\00:24:34.75 when they first entered the Promised Land, 00:24:34.78\00:24:36.56 they go over on dry ground. 00:24:36.59\00:24:39.15 Meaning they don't get muddy, 00:24:39.18\00:24:40.69 they go over and they come up clean on the other side. 00:24:40.72\00:24:43.92 In the same way it's only the righteousness of Christ 00:24:43.95\00:24:47.04 that makes it possible for us to cross death 00:24:47.07\00:24:49.01 and be clean on the other side. 00:24:49.04\00:24:51.34 After they crossed the Jordan River 00:24:51.37\00:24:53.47 Elijah and Elisha are walking and talking together. 00:24:53.50\00:24:57.59 Same way that Jesus walked and talked with the disciples 00:24:57.62\00:25:00.62 before He ascended to heaven. 00:25:00.65\00:25:02.96 And he says, what shall I give you 00:25:02.99\00:25:05.20 before I am taken away from you? 00:25:05.23\00:25:07.79 And Elisha said, I pray thee 00:25:07.82\00:25:09.93 that a double portion of your spirit might fall upon me. 00:25:09.96\00:25:14.35 And Elijah says you've asked the hard thing, 00:25:14.38\00:25:16.78 but I tell you what, if you've seen me 00:25:16.81\00:25:20.27 when I ascend up to heaven 00:25:20.30\00:25:22.63 it will be so on to you but if you don't see me 00:25:22.66\00:25:24.55 when I ascend it will not be so. 00:25:24.58\00:25:26.55 So as they walk and talk together suddenly 00:25:26.58\00:25:29.04 the heavens are parted, 00:25:29.07\00:25:30.80 chariots and horses of fire come down 00:25:30.83\00:25:33.95 and take Elijah up to heaven. 00:25:33.98\00:25:36.30 Elisha sees it, he falls down on the ground 00:25:36.33\00:25:39.21 and he says, my father, my father, the chariot of Israel 00:25:39.24\00:25:41.85 and the horseman thereof, and he rinse his robes. 00:25:41.88\00:25:45.68 And what falls down from Elijah as he goes up? 00:25:45.71\00:25:50.01 His mantle. 00:25:50.04\00:25:51.88 What's the only thing that Jesus-- 00:25:51.91\00:25:53.10 and that mantle is a robe. 00:25:53.13\00:25:54.68 What's the only thing that it says that 00:25:54.71\00:25:56.19 Jesus left behind intact when He ascended to heaven? 00:25:56.22\00:25:59.88 His blood stained robe was left behind. 00:25:59.91\00:26:03.09 Elisha tears his clothing, a signal 00:26:03.12\00:26:07.52 for our righteousness as filthy rags. 00:26:07.55\00:26:10.01 And he takes up the mantle of Elijah. 00:26:10.04\00:26:13.28 What do we do when we accept the righteousness of Christ? 00:26:13.31\00:26:15.84 We say we are sinful. 00:26:15.87\00:26:17.99 Our righteousness as filthy rags, 00:26:18.02\00:26:19.56 we take up the righteousness of Christ. 00:26:19.59\00:26:22.86 And it says Elisha saw it. 00:26:22.89\00:26:24.85 What was the criteria to receiving 00:26:24.88\00:26:26.74 a double portion of Elijah's spirit? 00:26:26.77\00:26:28.91 You got to see it. And it says he saw it. 00:26:28.94\00:26:32.42 Did the disciple see Jesus ascend up into those clouds? 00:26:32.45\00:26:36.81 What were those clouds? 00:26:36.84\00:26:39.47 Let's look here in the Bible and find out what it says here. 00:26:39.50\00:26:42.50 Psalm 104:3, 00:26:42.53\00:26:49.30 "He lays the beams of his upper chambers in the waters, 00:26:49.33\00:26:53.12 who makes the clouds His chariot, 00:26:53.15\00:26:56.12 who walks on the wings of the wind, 00:26:56.15\00:26:58.22 who makes His angel spirits, His ministers a flame of fire." 00:26:58.25\00:27:03.22 Most Bibles agree that it says angels, clouds, 00:27:03.25\00:27:06.78 fire chariots, right here in this verse. 00:27:06.81\00:27:10.15 Those clouds of light the disciple saw receive Jesus, 00:27:10.18\00:27:13.23 what are they? 00:27:13.26\00:27:14.86 They are oversaturated bright angels ministering spirits. 00:27:14.89\00:27:19.54 In Old Testament they call them chariots 00:27:19.57\00:27:21.17 and horses of fire. 00:27:21.20\00:27:22.43 And you know, angels are not galloping around on horses 00:27:22.46\00:27:25.08 as they go toeing from the earth 00:27:25.11\00:27:26.84 but in Bible times, 00:27:26.87\00:27:28.21 I mean, that's what there the fastest thing they had. 00:27:28.24\00:27:30.31 The most powerful thing they had. 00:27:30.34\00:27:31.81 That was their weapons of mass destruction, 00:27:31.84\00:27:33.84 were horses and chariots back then. 00:27:33.87\00:27:36.06 So they said, came these blazing ministering spirits, 00:27:36.09\00:27:39.48 chariots of fire. 00:27:39.51\00:27:41.70 Matter of fact even the Negro spiritual has that, right? 00:27:41.73\00:27:46.06 When I looked over Jordan, 00:27:46.09\00:27:47.23 what did I see coming forward to carry me home? 00:27:47.26\00:27:49.92 A band full of angels, 00:27:49.95\00:27:52.15 calls the chariots and horses of fire. 00:27:52.18\00:27:54.46 It's a band of angels came to take Elijah up 00:27:54.49\00:27:59.27 and it was a band of angels that came to receive Jesus, 00:27:59.30\00:28:02.19 the clouds of angels that received Him. 00:28:02.22\00:28:06.48 So He ascends up to heaven, He leaves his mantle behind. 00:28:06.51\00:28:11.77 Does Elisha get a double portion of the spirit? 00:28:11.80\00:28:15.64 It says, he goes to the Jordan River, 00:28:15.67\00:28:17.80 he takes the mantle. 00:28:17.83\00:28:18.86 Now I'm in 2 Kings 2:15, 00:28:18.89\00:28:23.59 he strikes, the water rip parts, 00:28:23.62\00:28:27.05 the sons of the prophets now see Elisha 00:28:27.08\00:28:29.38 and they say the spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha. 00:28:29.41\00:28:34.61 When the disciples came and met before the Sanhedrin 00:28:34.64\00:28:37.35 what did they say about the disciples? 00:28:37.38\00:28:39.56 They were spirit-filled they could see 00:28:39.59\00:28:41.20 that they had been with Jesus. 00:28:41.23\00:28:42.87 The spirit of Jesus rested on the apostles after Pentecost. 00:28:42.90\00:28:47.40 You see what I am saying? 00:28:47.43\00:28:48.64 This is a wonderful parallel 00:28:48.67\00:28:50.76 for the ministry of Christ and the disciples. 00:28:50.79\00:28:53.65 And what you and I can learn from this is the same way 00:28:53.68\00:28:57.09 if you and I follow Jesus the way Elisha followed Elijah. 00:28:57.12\00:29:03.79 If you and I say, and surely as the Lord lives 00:29:03.82\00:29:07.01 I am not gonna leave you, I'm not gonna forsake you. 00:29:07.04\00:29:09.29 Remember Elijah said, "You can stay here Elisha, 00:29:09.32\00:29:11.73 you can stay here. I've got to go." 00:29:11.76\00:29:12.95 He says, I'm not going to leave you with a vow. 00:29:12.98\00:29:16.17 Because he stayed with him he was spirit-filled. 00:29:16.20\00:29:19.07 Who are gonna be the ones baptized 00:29:19.10\00:29:20.52 with the Holy Spirit in the last days? 00:29:20.55\00:29:22.22 Those who casually go to church when it's convenient 00:29:22.25\00:29:24.82 or the ones who are sticking close to the Lord? 00:29:24.85\00:29:28.00 They'll be the ones who are going to receive the Holy Spirit 00:29:28.03\00:29:30.88 when that latter rain comes out. 00:29:30.91\00:29:32.59 The same way God baptized Elisha 00:29:32.62\00:29:34.69 with a double portion the Holy Spirit, 00:29:34.72\00:29:36.59 the same way the former rain was poured out 00:29:36.62\00:29:38.73 on the apostles at Pentecost. 00:29:38.76\00:29:40.80 God is surely going to send 00:29:40.83\00:29:42.25 the latter rain in the last days. 00:29:42.28\00:29:43.59 It's going to happen friends, 00:29:43.62\00:29:45.04 not everybody is gonna receive it. 00:29:45.07\00:29:47.06 The sons of the prophets 00:29:47.09\00:29:48.22 that stayed on the other side of the Jordan, 00:29:48.25\00:29:50.02 they watch from a distance, 00:29:50.05\00:29:51.14 they did not get a double portion. 00:29:51.17\00:29:53.38 Elisha who went through the Jordan with Elijah-- 00:29:53.41\00:29:57.46 if we are crucified with Christ, 00:29:57.49\00:29:58.88 if we are dead and buried with Jesus, 00:29:58.91\00:30:00.63 we will be filled with the Holy Spirit. 00:30:00.66\00:30:02.55 See what the symbolism means there. 00:30:02.58\00:30:04.50 Very important stories to help us understand that. 00:30:04.53\00:30:08.43 After Elijah and Jesus ascended to heaven the spirit came down. 00:30:08.46\00:30:14.51 Now there are some other miracles 00:30:14.54\00:30:15.77 and we got a lot of miracles here. 00:30:15.80\00:30:18.79 What about walking on water or something floating on water, 00:30:18.82\00:30:23.09 defying the power of water? 00:30:23.12\00:30:25.42 Little story, once Elisha begins his ministry-- 00:30:25.45\00:30:28.34 oh, first thing is I don't have it in my notes here 00:30:28.37\00:30:30.23 but I want you to know some kids made fun his bald head 00:30:30.26\00:30:33.75 and he pronounce a curse 00:30:33.78\00:30:35.05 and some bears came out and maul these kids 00:30:35.08\00:30:37.30 that were making fun of Elisha. So... Enough said. 00:30:37.33\00:30:45.14 Then one of the next miracle that happens, 00:30:45.17\00:30:48.03 it's a sign of being spirit filled, 00:30:48.06\00:30:51.84 too much hair, you get in trouble. 00:30:51.87\00:30:54.67 Look at Absalom Solomon, 00:30:54.70\00:30:56.02 there's a record in the Bible for you here. 00:30:56.05\00:30:59.50 In heaven, all the men will be bald, 00:30:59.53\00:31:00.76 I'm just getting ready. 00:31:00.79\00:31:03.12 2 Kings 4:7, 2 Kings 6:4-7, " 00:31:03.15\00:31:08.96 So he went with them. 00:31:08.99\00:31:10.26 And they came to Jordan, and they cut down trees." 00:31:10.29\00:31:13.16 Now they are building an AFCO program 00:31:13.19\00:31:15.63 for the sons of the prophets nearby the Jordan. 00:31:15.66\00:31:18.37 "But as one was cutting down a tree," 00:31:18.40\00:31:20.70 the axe head had dried out, 00:31:20.73\00:31:22.21 the head became loose, the handle was dry. 00:31:22.24\00:31:25.14 Axe flew off and landed in the Jordan River and it sank. 00:31:25.17\00:31:29.16 "And he cried and said, Alas, my master! 00:31:29.19\00:31:31.31 For it was borrowed." What am I going to do? 00:31:31.34\00:31:32.87 I don't have money to buy another one.'" 00:31:32.90\00:31:34.81 "So the man of God said, 'Where did it fall? 00:31:34.84\00:31:37.44 "He showed him the place, he cut off a stick, 00:31:37.47\00:31:40.78 he threw it in and it made the iron float. 00:31:40.81\00:31:44.82 Therefore he said, 'Pick it up.'" 00:31:44.85\00:31:45.97 You ever seen iron float? 00:31:46.00\00:31:47.63 Yeah, it's called the US battleship. 00:31:47.66\00:31:50.84 They got a lot of iron floating. 00:31:50.87\00:31:52.14 You go down here by the San Francisco Bay 00:31:52.17\00:31:54.28 in all those mothball Navy, floating iron. 00:31:54.31\00:31:57.68 Always kind of strange but it didn't happen 00:31:57.71\00:31:59.20 back in Bible times. 00:31:59.23\00:32:00.42 They didn't have iron ships, 00:32:00.45\00:32:02.22 iron did not float anymore than Jesus walking on water. 00:32:02.25\00:32:06.92 So Elisha, you see something floating on water 00:32:06.95\00:32:09.83 that's not supposed to float on water. 00:32:09.86\00:32:11.69 And it's interesting he threw a stick in. 00:32:11.72\00:32:14.94 That's-- what did Moses throw 00:32:14.97\00:32:16.85 in the water to make the water sweet, 00:32:16.88\00:32:19.19 the Waters of Marah? 00:32:19.22\00:32:20.85 He threw in a stick, it's a symbol for the cross. 00:32:20.88\00:32:24.20 What gives us the power to do the impossible for iron to swim? 00:32:24.23\00:32:29.40 It's the power of the Cross. 00:32:29.43\00:32:31.49 I also think it's interesting that widow 00:32:31.52\00:32:33.06 that was making her last loaf of bread, 00:32:33.09\00:32:34.82 she said, I'm gathering two sticks, 00:32:34.85\00:32:37.25 another symbol for the cross there. 00:32:37.28\00:32:40.68 So miracle of define water-- 00:32:40.71\00:32:43.50 we got three miracles about water here. 00:32:43.53\00:32:45.65 Elisha also transforms water. 00:32:45.68\00:32:49.28 They went to the spring of Jericho, 00:32:49.31\00:32:51.10 matter of fact I've drunk from that spring, 00:32:51.13\00:32:52.63 it's there today. 00:32:52.66\00:32:54.19 Jericho is irrigated by this spring, 00:32:54.22\00:32:56.29 it's a very ancient spring. 00:32:56.32\00:32:58.25 It was a good spring 00:32:58.28\00:32:59.31 but the waters were sulphur waters, 00:32:59.34\00:33:01.56 you couldn't drink them. 00:33:01.59\00:33:02.94 We go riding around in the desert 00:33:02.97\00:33:04.32 sometimes in the summer with our buddies 00:33:04.35\00:33:07.36 and sometimes we'll find springs, 00:33:07.39\00:33:08.54 you better taste it first 00:33:08.57\00:33:10.13 because some of those springs are poisoned 00:33:10.16\00:33:12.25 and some of them are sulphur and you just can't drink it. 00:33:12.28\00:33:14.98 And so the disciple said to Elisha, 00:33:15.01\00:33:18.76 you know, this water is abundant 00:33:18.79\00:33:20.49 but we can't water the crops with it, 00:33:20.52\00:33:22.28 it kills everything it touches, we can drink it. 00:33:22.31\00:33:24.95 And so he takes a cruise, a little vessel of salt. 00:33:24.98\00:33:28.83 And he pours it in the water, 00:33:28.86\00:33:30.56 the water was transformed and it became sweet. 00:33:30.59\00:33:32.64 It says in the Bible, the waters were healed to this day. 00:33:32.67\00:33:36.80 And I've drunk from that spring, Elisha spring at Jericho. 00:33:36.83\00:33:40.28 Still running today, that's a miracle recorded in history 00:33:40.31\00:33:43.33 and you can see the evidence of that miracle today. 00:33:43.36\00:33:45.89 Now did Jesus say, you are the salt of the earth? 00:33:45.92\00:33:49.50 And that salt represents Christianity 00:33:49.53\00:33:52.40 that makes the waters drinkable. 00:33:52.43\00:33:54.03 And Christ of course is the Living Water. 00:33:54.06\00:33:56.72 Another just analogy of Elisha and Jesus. 00:33:56.75\00:33:59.35 By the way, Jesus name in Hebrew is Yeshua, Yeshua, 00:33:59.38\00:34:06.43 that means Jehovah saves. 00:34:06.46\00:34:09.16 Elisha's name in Hebrew is Elishu'a 00:34:09.19\00:34:13.89 and that means Elohim, God saves. 00:34:13.92\00:34:16.90 Elisha's name and Jesus' name are really very similar. 00:34:16.93\00:34:20.16 One uses the name Jehovah, one uses the name Elohim 00:34:20.19\00:34:22.72 but it means God is Savior. 00:34:22.75\00:34:24.78 So his name was very similar and he is a type of Christ. 00:34:24.81\00:34:28.85 Another water miracle, the kings of Israel, 00:34:28.88\00:34:32.73 the king of Israel and the king of Judah 00:34:32.76\00:34:34.45 are being attacked by their enemies. 00:34:34.48\00:34:36.18 They surrounded them you get the Edomites, 00:34:36.21\00:34:38.87 and the Moabites and the Ammonites 00:34:38.90\00:34:40.16 and they are going through the desert with their army 00:34:40.19\00:34:41.87 and getting ready to engage in this battle. 00:34:41.90\00:34:44.59 And because it takes so long, 00:34:44.62\00:34:45.86 if you've ever been down by the Dead Sea, 00:34:45.89\00:34:47.55 it's the hottest, driest, lowest desert in the world. 00:34:47.58\00:34:51.74 And they run out of water 00:34:51.77\00:34:52.96 and armies used to take cattle with them. 00:34:52.99\00:34:54.44 That was there canned food. 00:34:54.47\00:34:57.04 And they have no grass, they have no water, 00:34:57.07\00:34:58.51 the animals are dying and they say, what do we do? 00:34:58.54\00:35:01.15 They said, you know, Elisha came with us 00:35:01.18\00:35:02.89 on this expedition, let's ask him. 00:35:02.92\00:35:06.30 And Elisha, he does something interesting. 00:35:06.33\00:35:07.83 He said bring me a minstrel. 00:35:07.86\00:35:10.61 So they get someone who could sing 00:35:10.64\00:35:13.06 and he brings, he comes before Elisha 00:35:13.09\00:35:15.11 and the Holy Spirit comes on the minstrel. 00:35:15.14\00:35:16.60 And the minstrel begins to sing, 00:35:16.63\00:35:17.80 he says make this valley full of ditches. 00:35:17.83\00:35:20.97 And so they listen to what the minstrel said 00:35:21.00\00:35:23.69 and the Kings have the soldiers all start digging these ditches 00:35:23.72\00:35:26.41 and they are not foxholes 00:35:26.44\00:35:27.47 but they did these ditches there in the desert. 00:35:27.50\00:35:29.68 And they went to sleep that night 00:35:29.71\00:35:30.82 and during the night they all filled up 00:35:30.85\00:35:32.03 with water and they all drank. 00:35:32.06\00:35:34.96 And the enemy in the meantime sees that water from a distance 00:35:34.99\00:35:37.84 and the sun rising reflects on it, 00:35:37.87\00:35:39.76 it's red, it looks like blood. 00:35:39.79\00:35:40.82 They said, oh, the kings of Israel 00:35:40.85\00:35:43.26 and Judah all got mad and they fought, 00:35:43.29\00:35:44.83 that's blood out there on shimmering. 00:35:44.86\00:35:47.95 And they went to attack them, they weren't prepared. 00:35:47.98\00:35:50.59 And the Israelites 00:35:50.62\00:35:51.93 and the people of Judah attack Edomites, 00:35:51.96\00:35:53.83 Moabites, and Ammonites, 00:35:53.86\00:35:56.24 And actually they all kind of turned on each other, 00:35:56.27\00:35:59.19 the Edomites, Moabites and Ammonites 00:35:59.22\00:36:01.25 turned on each other, they self-destructed. 00:36:01.28\00:36:03.22 The Israelites just kind of came along 00:36:03.25\00:36:04.63 and had to plunder them. 00:36:04.66\00:36:05.88 So he performed a miracle 00:36:05.91\00:36:07.09 and it all happened with the water. 00:36:07.12\00:36:08.79 And it all traces back again to Elisha. 00:36:08.82\00:36:11.56 And that's talking about the living water 00:36:11.59\00:36:13.07 that God gives us and that's what gives us victory. 00:36:13.10\00:36:16.46 Not only did they multiply Water, they multiplied bread. 00:36:16.49\00:36:21.35 2 Kings 8:1, 00:36:21.38\00:36:23.88 now I'm jumping back 00:36:23.91\00:36:25.33 not only did Elijah have a miracle of bread, 00:36:25.36\00:36:28.94 your remember with the woman, 00:36:28.97\00:36:30.68 Elisha had a miracle 00:36:30.71\00:36:32.36 and it happens often during a time of famine. 00:36:32.39\00:36:34.69 Was there a famine during the time of Elijah? 00:36:34.72\00:36:37.80 Now there's a famine during the time of Elisha. 00:36:37.83\00:36:41.00 He says, matter of fact 2 Kings 8:1, 00:36:41.03\00:36:43.21 "A famine will come on the land for seven years." 00:36:43.24\00:36:46.14 You realize that during the ministry of Christ 00:36:46.17\00:36:48.36 there is seven years 00:36:48.39\00:36:50.13 where He works especially with the Jewish nation. 00:36:50.16\00:36:53.52 Three and a half years in person, 00:36:53.55\00:36:55.72 He dies then three and a half years through the disciples. 00:36:55.75\00:36:58.77 They just preached to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 00:36:58.80\00:37:02.47 Then Stephen is stoned then the gospel goes everywhere. 00:37:02.50\00:37:05.48 That was the end to the 490 year prophecy. 00:37:05.51\00:37:08.11 Seven years there, three and half years through Christ, 00:37:08.14\00:37:10.70 three and half years through the apostles 00:37:10.73\00:37:12.38 then the gospel went to the Gentiles. 00:37:12.41\00:37:14.67 And that was a time of famine because they were rejecting 00:37:14.70\00:37:17.04 and resisting and you have that there. 00:37:17.07\00:37:21.57 During this time of famine 2 Kings 4, 00:37:21.60\00:37:24.06 jump to chapter 4, 2 Kings, 00:37:24.09\00:37:26.85 "A man came from Baal-Shalishah, 00:37:26.88\00:37:29.53 and brought the man of God bread of the first fruits, 00:37:29.56\00:37:31.93 20 loaves of barley bread 00:37:31.96\00:37:34.32 newly ripe and grain in his knapsack. 00:37:34.35\00:37:37.70 And he said, 'Give it to the people that they might eat.'" 00:37:37.73\00:37:39.55 Now there's a whole town of people here. 00:37:39.58\00:37:41.76 "But the servant said, 00:37:41.79\00:37:42.82 'What, shall I set 20 loaves before a hundred men?' 00:37:42.85\00:37:46.95 He said, 'Give it to the people that they might eat.' 00:37:46.98\00:37:50.10 For thus says the Lord, 'they will eat, 00:37:50.13\00:37:52.53 and they will have some leftover.' 00:37:52.56\00:37:54.77 So he set it before them 00:37:54.80\00:37:56.33 and they had some leftover 00:37:56.36\00:37:57.80 according to the word of the Lord." 00:37:57.83\00:37:59.16 Now I am reading from the Old Testament, 00:37:59.19\00:38:00.62 does that sound faintly familiar 00:38:00.65\00:38:02.19 to a New Testament story to you? 00:38:02.22\00:38:05.19 Was there not enough but they got some barley loaves, 00:38:05.22\00:38:08.04 not enough loaves 00:38:08.07\00:38:09.10 but they took this ridiculously small amount of bread 00:38:09.13\00:38:13.01 and it was multiplied so that everybody was fed. 00:38:13.04\00:38:15.42 Not only was everyone fed there were leftovers. 00:38:15.45\00:38:17.81 Were there leftovers with Jesus 00:38:17.84\00:38:19.13 when He multiplied the bread also? 00:38:19.16\00:38:21.25 We've seen this miracle at our central potluck 00:38:21.28\00:38:23.57 many times, amen. 00:38:23.60\00:38:26.14 Sometimes we haven't seen the miracle 00:38:26.17\00:38:28.31 and there wasn't much luck left in the pot 00:38:28.34\00:38:30.05 when I got to it but we have seen the miracle before also, 00:38:30.08\00:38:34.04 need to just pray better or something. 00:38:34.07\00:38:37.54 Not only is there multiplying bread 00:38:37.57\00:38:40.51 there's multiplying oil. 00:38:40.54\00:38:42.26 Now what is that oil represent? Holy Spirit. 00:38:42.29\00:38:46.57 You read there in 2 Kings Chapter 4 about this woman 00:38:46.60\00:38:50.02 and she comes to Elisha. 00:38:50.05\00:38:53.09 And we should bring our problems to Elisha. 00:38:53.12\00:38:55.17 This is a great story. 00:38:55.20\00:38:57.04 And she said, "My husband died 00:38:57.07\00:39:01.68 and I have this debt I can't pay, and the creditor, 00:39:01.71\00:39:05.70 he's basically," I'm paraphrasing, 00:39:05.73\00:39:07.44 "He's taken everything in the house, 00:39:07.47\00:39:09.65 he's getting ready to take my two boys now as his slaves 00:39:09.68\00:39:12.59 because I can't pay my debt." 00:39:12.62\00:39:14.04 And they could do that by the law back in Bible times. 00:39:14.07\00:39:16.18 You can just find it in Chapter 11 or Chapter 13. 00:39:16.21\00:39:18.72 If you couldn't pay your debts they could take your children 00:39:18.75\00:39:22.41 into servitude to be their slaves 00:39:22.44\00:39:24.13 to work off the debt. 00:39:24.16\00:39:26.89 She said, "What am I gonna do?" 00:39:26.92\00:39:28.17 And Elisha says, "What do you have?" 00:39:28.20\00:39:31.75 Now you notice, one time the disciples came to Jesus 00:39:31.78\00:39:34.28 and said, "We need to send people home 00:39:34.31\00:39:35.66 because they're hungry and they have nothing to eat." 00:39:35.69\00:39:37.75 Jesus said, "You give them something." 00:39:37.78\00:39:38.97 "We don't have anything." He said, "What do you have?" 00:39:39.00\00:39:41.02 "Well, we got five loaves." 00:39:41.05\00:39:42.63 So Christ like Elijah says, look at the resources you have, 00:39:42.66\00:39:47.12 consecrate your resources to God 00:39:47.15\00:39:48.84 and see if He doesn't bless what you have. 00:39:48.87\00:39:50.88 Your personal gifts and talents, 00:39:50.91\00:39:52.90 your finances whatever you have, 00:39:52.93\00:39:54.59 consecrate what you have to God 00:39:54.62\00:39:56.28 and He can work a miracle 00:39:56.31\00:39:57.78 of multiplying it for His kingdom. 00:39:57.81\00:40:00.50 So she says, "Well, all I've got in the house 00:40:00.53\00:40:02.26 left on the shelf is this little vial of oil." 00:40:02.29\00:40:05.99 Now, why did she say that for the last thing? 00:40:06.02\00:40:09.39 Why would a mother save oil? 00:40:09.42\00:40:11.40 Oil, and this is not Quaker State motor oil, 00:40:11.43\00:40:14.70 he's talking about olive oil, it was edible. 00:40:14.73\00:40:17.16 Oil was a basic commodity 00:40:17.19\00:40:19.61 that you needed in the medicine chest, 00:40:19.64\00:40:21.67 it was something you needed in the kitchen. 00:40:21.70\00:40:24.70 They use it in the living room. Oil was used for healing, right? 00:40:24.73\00:40:28.38 The way you anoint with oil. 00:40:28.41\00:40:30.57 Oil was used for food, 00:40:30.60\00:40:32.15 it was incorporated in their bread. 00:40:32.18\00:40:34.52 Oil was used for beauty, 00:40:34.55\00:40:36.47 they would anoint with oil for your appearance. 00:40:36.50\00:40:40.20 Oil was used for light, it burned the lamps, 00:40:40.23\00:40:43.04 it would illuminate. 00:40:43.07\00:40:44.67 Oil was used for heat, it burned the fire. 00:40:44.70\00:40:47.70 She did not want her children to be sick, 00:40:47.73\00:40:49.82 she wanted them to be beautiful, 00:40:49.85\00:40:51.09 she wanted them to be illuminated, 00:40:51.12\00:40:52.58 she wanted her children to be fed, 00:40:52.61\00:40:55.09 she wanted them to be warm. 00:40:55.12\00:40:57.02 You see what I am saying? And so this was so basic. 00:40:57.05\00:41:00.33 Now what does a woman represent symbolically? 00:41:00.36\00:41:04.03 Should we have oil in our church for all those reasons? 00:41:04.06\00:41:07.21 I am not talking about in a cupboard somewhere, 00:41:07.24\00:41:08.71 I am talking about God spirit. 00:41:08.74\00:41:10.94 So she says, "All right, 00:41:10.97\00:41:12.73 I'm going to consecrate what I have." 00:41:12.76\00:41:14.05 And Elisha says, here's what I want you to do, 00:41:14.08\00:41:16.07 go through your community get your boys 00:41:16.10\00:41:18.37 to borrow empty vessels, any kind of vessels. 00:41:18.40\00:41:23.63 Bring them into your house. 00:41:23.66\00:41:27.26 And I just always picture these kids 00:41:27.29\00:41:28.99 going up and down the streets in the neighborhood there 00:41:29.02\00:41:30.98 and they get their Radio Flyer wagon 00:41:31.01\00:41:32.50 and they're filling up the wagon with these vessels 00:41:32.53\00:41:34.78 and they bring them into the house 00:41:34.81\00:41:36.17 and they are stacking them all around the room, 00:41:36.20\00:41:37.55 filling up this empty house with these vessels. 00:41:37.58\00:41:40.26 Now Elisha says, shut the door 00:41:40.29\00:41:41.65 then pour the oil from this little vessel 00:41:41.68\00:41:43.52 you've got into the empty vessels. 00:41:43.55\00:41:46.34 So they do that and they start pouring 00:41:46.37\00:41:48.90 and it just keeps on coming. 00:41:48.93\00:41:50.10 It looks like some magician tricky 00:41:50.13\00:41:51.63 you've probably seen before 00:41:51.66\00:41:52.78 where it just keeps pouring and pouring 00:41:52.81\00:41:54.07 and pouring and you go, where is it coming from? 00:41:54.10\00:41:56.65 If there's so much more coming out, how can that be? 00:41:56.68\00:41:59.94 I remember when I was a kid 00:41:59.97\00:42:01.57 I had a little Barbie bottle, a baby bottle. 00:42:01.60\00:42:04.95 It wasn't a Barbie bottle, a little baby bottle. 00:42:04.98\00:42:07.25 No, I didn't play with dolls one of my friend had one. 00:42:07.28\00:42:11.90 And you tip it up and adjust and we kept bubbling up 00:42:11.93\00:42:14.66 and it seemed like it never stopped. 00:42:14.69\00:42:15.77 How many of you know what I'm talking about? 00:42:15.80\00:42:18.14 And so you play with dolls too, great? 00:42:18.17\00:42:21.81 And so the point is it just keeps on coming. 00:42:21.84\00:42:24.20 She says, well, that one's full, bring another one. 00:42:24.23\00:42:26.38 They pour and it fills up, that one's full, 00:42:26.41\00:42:27.70 bring another one, they bring. 00:42:27.73\00:42:28.80 And they are going around this room 00:42:28.83\00:42:29.86 and they're filling up all these different vessels. 00:42:29.89\00:42:33.41 What does that mean? 00:42:33.44\00:42:35.96 This is really how a church grows. 00:42:35.99\00:42:39.17 How much Holy Spirit do you have? 00:42:39.20\00:42:40.46 Not much, I got a little bit but do you have some? 00:42:40.49\00:42:43.32 You invite your neighbors. 00:42:43.35\00:42:44.64 Your neighbors who don't have Christ are empty vessels. 00:42:44.67\00:42:48.22 You bring them into your house. 00:42:48.25\00:42:50.30 Bible says God is a pot and we are the clay, 00:42:50.33\00:42:52.55 we are the vessels, right? 00:42:52.58\00:42:56.25 You bring then into your house and you have a Bible study. 00:42:56.28\00:42:59.69 And you pour the little bit oil you've got 00:42:59.72\00:43:01.29 and you know what, it will multiply 00:43:01.32\00:43:02.56 and you'll have more for the next vessel 00:43:02.59\00:43:04.18 and the next vessel and the next vessel 00:43:04.21\00:43:05.91 until pretty soon all the vessels are full. 00:43:05.94\00:43:08.07 The miracle did not stop 00:43:08.10\00:43:09.45 until there was nowhere else to pour it. 00:43:09.48\00:43:12.28 God never runs out of the Holy Spirit, 00:43:12.31\00:43:14.30 He runs out of people that are willing 00:43:14.33\00:43:15.71 to receive the Holy Spirit 00:43:15.74\00:43:17.54 because we are too full of other things. 00:43:17.57\00:43:19.41 If you are full, he can't put anything in. 00:43:19.44\00:43:22.55 So that oil kept coming as long as there was room. 00:43:22.58\00:43:26.18 Do you make yourself available for God's Spirit 00:43:26.21\00:43:28.53 or your life is too full of other things? 00:43:28.56\00:43:31.93 And then she comes to Elisha, she says, now what do I do? 00:43:31.96\00:43:34.40 He says, well, go sell the oil, pay your debt. 00:43:34.43\00:43:36.30 You and your sons will be free and live on the surplus. 00:43:36.33\00:43:40.88 There was leftovers again. 00:43:40.91\00:43:43.38 You know, I love this about Jesus, King David said, 00:43:43.41\00:43:48.31 "You anoint my head with oil, my cup runs over." 00:43:48.34\00:43:50.95 What is running over mean? 00:43:50.98\00:43:52.95 Surplus, leftovers, 00:43:52.98\00:43:54.08 they have 12 baskets of extra bread 00:43:54.11\00:43:56.00 after the miracles of Christ. 00:43:56.03\00:43:57.40 Christ blesses us exceedingly, abundantly 00:43:57.43\00:44:00.71 above and beyond 00:44:00.74\00:44:02.50 if there's an overflow, there are leftovers. 00:44:02.53\00:44:05.07 That's good news, isn't it? 00:44:05.10\00:44:06.59 You are not gonna run out of God, you share Him. 00:44:06.62\00:44:09.22 He will open the windows of heaven 00:44:09.25\00:44:10.54 and pour out the blessing. 00:44:10.57\00:44:11.75 You will not have room enough, that means leftovers, right? 00:44:11.78\00:44:15.81 That's the wonderful thing about the Lord, 00:44:15.84\00:44:17.51 He blesses us. 00:44:17.54\00:44:18.67 So He multiplies bread, symbol for the Bible, 00:44:18.70\00:44:21.99 give us this day our daily bread. 00:44:22.02\00:44:24.02 He use the salt, Jesus said you are the salt of the earth. 00:44:24.05\00:44:27.23 He multiplies oil, 00:44:27.26\00:44:28.32 a symbol for the comforter of the Holy Spirit, 00:44:28.35\00:44:31.91 and then He baptizes in Jordan. 00:44:31.94\00:44:34.20 Now I'm not just talking about 00:44:34.23\00:44:35.45 where Elijah cross the Jordan with Elisha 00:44:35.48\00:44:38.45 but a leper came to Elisha. What was his name? 00:44:38.48\00:44:43.13 Jesus quotes a story Naaman a Gentile. 00:44:43.16\00:44:48.38 And Elisha sends his servant out and he says, 00:44:48.41\00:44:51.15 "You go wash in the Jordan River 00:44:51.18\00:44:53.37 seven times and you'll be clean." 00:44:53.40\00:44:55.86 And he was mad, he didn't want to do that. 00:44:55.89\00:44:57.21 Seem too simple, wash and be clean. 00:44:57.24\00:45:01.39 He said, "I can go back to the rivers of Damascus." 00:45:01.42\00:45:03.56 This proud general with leprosy, 00:45:03.59\00:45:04.95 what does leprosy represent? 00:45:04.98\00:45:06.19 If the Jordan represents baptism, 00:45:06.22\00:45:08.35 death, burial and resurrection, 00:45:08.38\00:45:10.12 in the Bible leprosy represent sin. 00:45:10.15\00:45:12.78 It was a deadly disease, a slow death, 00:45:12.81\00:45:15.42 contagious disease, typically terminal 00:45:15.45\00:45:18.61 and it began by affecting the nerves 00:45:18.64\00:45:20.54 and the extremity so you lose your feeling. 00:45:20.57\00:45:22.69 You know what sin does to you? 00:45:22.72\00:45:24.27 At first you're convicted by sin 00:45:24.30\00:45:25.90 but the more you stay in a life of sin 00:45:25.93\00:45:27.52 you lose your sense of conviction. 00:45:27.55\00:45:29.46 That's when you really getting near the final stages. 00:45:29.49\00:45:31.89 You are sinning and it doesn't bother you anymore. 00:45:31.92\00:45:34.10 You have no desire to repent, 00:45:34.13\00:45:35.70 your heart becomes hard, it's like leprosy. 00:45:35.73\00:45:39.33 So this proud general name Naaman, 00:45:39.36\00:45:41.66 captain of all the forces in Syria. 00:45:41.69\00:45:44.14 He comes to the prophet in Israel 00:45:44.17\00:45:46.10 and he says, go wash in the Jordan seven times. 00:45:46.13\00:45:48.89 He's like, "God, all the rivers of Damascus 00:45:48.92\00:45:51.27 are much clearer and cleaner than the waters of the Jordan," 00:45:51.30\00:45:53.77 that was true. 00:45:53.80\00:45:55.43 But God said, "You wash in the Jordan." 00:45:55.46\00:45:58.43 Did He tell him how many times? 00:45:58.46\00:46:01.19 If he had washed five times would that have worked? 00:46:01.22\00:46:04.61 Is God particular about numbers? 00:46:04.64\00:46:07.43 When He told Joshua to march around 00:46:07.46\00:46:09.21 the city of Jericho seven times, 00:46:09.24\00:46:11.12 did the walls fall down after four times? 00:46:11.15\00:46:14.32 When God tells us to remember the seventh day, 00:46:14.35\00:46:16.90 does He mean the seventh day 00:46:16.93\00:46:17.96 or did He say whatever day is convenient for you? 00:46:17.99\00:46:20.57 God means what He says 00:46:20.60\00:46:22.06 and He expects us to obey what He says. 00:46:22.09\00:46:24.39 That's why we're here on the day that God says 00:46:24.42\00:46:26.73 it is blessed, the seventh day. 00:46:26.76\00:46:29.34 And so Naaman goes, finally his soldiers come to him 00:46:29.37\00:46:32.54 and they say, look, if the prophet had asked you 00:46:32.57\00:46:34.73 to do something difficult you do it, right? Yeah. 00:46:34.76\00:46:38.51 They said, why not wash and be clean? 00:46:38.54\00:46:41.12 So he takes off his armor, he goes 00:46:41.15\00:46:42.95 and he dips down seven times in Jordan. 00:46:42.98\00:46:46.17 And after he dips down the sixth time 00:46:46.20\00:46:48.04 he comes up after the seventh time 00:46:48.07\00:46:51.09 and his leprosy evidently, he lost some of his digits. 00:46:51.12\00:46:56.88 And it says his flesh was restored to him again 00:46:56.91\00:47:00.68 like the flesh of a little child. 00:47:00.71\00:47:03.94 And I tell you, boy, there'd be-- 00:47:03.97\00:47:06.86 I'd be richer if I could develop a real cream 00:47:06.89\00:47:08.94 that would give women flesh like a little child again. 00:47:08.97\00:47:10.91 They would buy that, we all-- 00:47:10.94\00:47:12.00 how many of you like to have flesh of little child again? 00:47:12.03\00:47:14.88 Not too many men admit it but, you know. 00:47:14.91\00:47:18.05 Can you imagine this here is this brave general? 00:47:18.08\00:47:21.42 And after he washes in the Jordan, 00:47:21.45\00:47:22.96 the seventh time he comes up 00:47:22.99\00:47:24.68 and there is his soldiers watching this and saying, 00:47:24.71\00:47:26.75 "What a miracle? 00:47:26.78\00:47:28.02 Praise the Lord, your leprosy is gone 00:47:28.05\00:47:29.72 and your skin looks really nice. 00:47:29.75\00:47:31.14 Can I touch it?" Can you imagine that? 00:47:31.17\00:47:33.81 General, can I stroke your cheek? 00:47:33.84\00:47:37.63 I mean, can you-- what does that mean? 00:47:37.66\00:47:40.18 You know it's really what a Christian is? 00:47:40.21\00:47:42.06 A Christian is a soldier with baby skin 00:47:42.09\00:47:45.65 because you are born again and yet you're a soldier, right? 00:47:45.68\00:47:49.15 And so but that here you got picture of baptism, 00:47:49.18\00:47:51.72 it happened in the Jordan River 00:47:51.75\00:47:53.16 which is where Jesus was baptized. 00:47:53.19\00:47:56.38 Isn't that right as a symbol for you and me? 00:47:56.41\00:48:00.31 Well, by the way at the end of that story 00:48:00.34\00:48:03.00 Elisha is betrayed by a friend for silver. 00:48:03.03\00:48:08.82 Naaman tries to pay for his healing, 00:48:08.85\00:48:11.13 Elisha says, "No." 00:48:11.16\00:48:12.28 But he's got a greedy servant named Gehazi 00:48:12.31\00:48:14.78 who chases after him, he lies and he take silver 00:48:14.81\00:48:17.68 and Gehazi ends up with the leprosy of Naaman 00:48:17.71\00:48:21.21 because of his greed. Judas ends up hanging himself. 00:48:21.24\00:48:24.35 Another place where there's a parallel 00:48:24.38\00:48:25.89 between Elisha and Jesus. 00:48:25.92\00:48:27.92 Elisha than captures an entire army. 00:48:27.95\00:48:30.00 This is a great story. 00:48:30.03\00:48:31.78 You've heard the story about chariots and horses of fire. 00:48:31.81\00:48:35.54 It comes from this story where an army surrounds Elisha 00:48:35.57\00:48:41.11 and they are serving this little town of Dothan. 00:48:41.14\00:48:43.50 And Elisha praise and God gives him the spirit 00:48:43.53\00:48:47.50 and he prays and the whole army struck blind. 00:48:47.53\00:48:50.16 So Elisha finds the lead horse 00:48:50.19\00:48:53.18 and he starts to walk towards the capital of Israel, Samaria. 00:48:53.21\00:48:57.07 And he's leading this enemy army. 00:48:57.10\00:49:00.11 And he leads them, they are all blinded, 00:49:00.14\00:49:01.51 they don't know where they are going. 00:49:01.54\00:49:02.57 And he leads this whole army inside the city. 00:49:02.60\00:49:05.27 There are confused they are blinded 00:49:05.30\00:49:06.57 or who knows what happened. 00:49:06.60\00:49:08.22 And I can just picture the watchmen on the wall. 00:49:08.25\00:49:10.21 They say there's an army approaching. 00:49:10.24\00:49:11.95 And as they get close they see and Elisha's waving, 00:49:11.98\00:49:14.10 his signal he says, open the gate. 00:49:14.13\00:49:17.08 It looks like they are surrendering. 00:49:17.11\00:49:18.36 He leads this whole army in. 00:49:18.39\00:49:20.06 Any of you old-timers remember 00:49:20.09\00:49:21.75 the story of Sergeant York from World War I, 00:49:21.78\00:49:26.13 who single-handedly, 00:49:26.16\00:49:27.34 he got the Congressional Medal of Honor, 00:49:27.37\00:49:29.15 captured a 132 German solders by himself. 00:49:29.18\00:49:36.03 Well, Elisha captured whole army by himself. 00:49:36.06\00:49:40.63 And then after he captures them 00:49:40.66\00:49:42.03 instead of killing them 00:49:42.06\00:49:44.26 the king of Israel says, "Shall we fire now? 00:49:44.29\00:49:46.31 Give the word ready and fire, 00:49:46.34\00:49:47.40 will just completely wipe them out." 00:49:47.43\00:49:49.94 And Elisha says, "No, you've already captured them." 00:49:49.97\00:49:52.15 He says, "Feed them and send them home, 00:49:52.18\00:49:54.17 show them mercy and love them." 00:49:54.20\00:49:56.37 Isn't that like Jesus? 00:49:56.40\00:49:57.92 Love your enemies, give food to those your enemy, 00:49:57.95\00:50:01.34 if he's hungry feed him. 00:50:01.37\00:50:02.46 Thirsty? Give him something to drink. 00:50:02.49\00:50:03.82 Isn't that what Jesus taught? This is what Elisha did. 00:50:03.85\00:50:06.99 He said, love your enemies, don't retaliate. 00:50:07.02\00:50:11.25 Another quick story, you realize that 00:50:11.28\00:50:14.11 both Elijah and Elisha stayed with Gentile women 00:50:14.14\00:50:22.06 and resurrected boys that died in an upper room. 00:50:22.09\00:50:26.64 You get that? What a coincidence. 00:50:26.67\00:50:28.99 How many people resurrected boys in the Old Testament? 00:50:29.02\00:50:32.82 Two, both Elijah and Elisha. 00:50:32.85\00:50:36.49 Who do you think those boys represent? 00:50:36.52\00:50:37.88 Matter of fact not too many resurrections 00:50:37.91\00:50:39.59 in the Old Testament, are there? 00:50:39.62\00:50:41.92 Moses was probably raised by the Lord. 00:50:41.95\00:50:45.74 The only other resurrections you've got is these two boys 00:50:45.77\00:50:50.29 and one other I'm about to tell you about. 00:50:50.32\00:50:53.01 That's a type of Christ, resurrection in the upper room, 00:50:53.04\00:50:57.96 new life in the upper room. 00:50:57.99\00:51:00.58 Does Jesus pour out the Holy Spirit on the church 00:51:00.61\00:51:02.54 in the upper room? 00:51:02.57\00:51:03.90 Does Christ inaugurate the New Testament 00:51:03.93\00:51:06.83 in the upper room with the bread and a wine? 00:51:06.86\00:51:09.24 And in both cases they are Gentile women's boys. 00:51:09.27\00:51:16.16 Letting us know that the New Testament church 00:51:16.19\00:51:18.47 would not just they were the Jews 00:51:18.50\00:51:20.91 but the New Testament church 00:51:20.94\00:51:22.27 would also go beyond to the Gentiles. 00:51:22.30\00:51:25.49 I think that's wonderful example of that. 00:51:25.52\00:51:28.62 And after Elisha resurrect this boy 00:51:28.65\00:51:31.86 the son of the Shunammite woman, says, 00:51:31.89\00:51:35.42 "He presents him to her and say, 00:51:35.45\00:51:37.22 'take up your son.'" 00:51:37.25\00:51:38.45 Did Jesus resurrect a boy who is on his way to be buried, 00:51:38.48\00:51:43.39 the son of a widow just like 00:51:43.42\00:51:46.20 when Elijah resurrected that Kananite woman son, 00:51:46.23\00:51:48.60 she was a widow? 00:51:48.63\00:51:50.36 And then it says, "He presented her to him." 00:51:50.39\00:51:54.04 Jesus after He raises the young men He says, 00:51:54.07\00:51:56.47 "Young man I said you arise. He presented him to his mother." 00:51:56.50\00:52:02.09 You know, one of the reasons 00:52:02.12\00:52:03.15 that you recognize Jesus as the Messiah 00:52:03.18\00:52:06.31 is by the multitude of miracles. 00:52:06.34\00:52:09.05 You can read about that in John 7:31. 00:52:09.08\00:52:11.21 He--it says, will, the Christ do more miracles than this man. 00:52:11.24\00:52:14.72 He's done more miracles than Elijah. 00:52:14.75\00:52:17.26 Elisha did twice as many miracles as Jesus and Jesus-- 00:52:17.29\00:52:21.02 I mean, Elisha did twice as many miracles as Elijah. 00:52:21.05\00:52:25.20 And Jesus has done even more miracles than Elisha. 00:52:25.23\00:52:28.88 Will the Messiah do more miracles than this? 00:52:28.91\00:52:31.34 So Christ has been told that-- 00:52:31.37\00:52:33.94 or we've been told that the Jesus is the one. 00:52:33.97\00:52:37.07 Finally, dying encouragement. Does Elisha is dying? 00:52:37.10\00:52:40.40 He brings the King in and he tells him you can have victory. 00:52:40.43\00:52:43.17 He says, open the window and fire the arrow, 00:52:43.20\00:52:45.32 have faith in victory, strike the ground. 00:52:45.35\00:52:47.77 He only struck the ground three times, 00:52:47.80\00:52:50.45 he should have struck more. 00:52:50.48\00:52:51.56 It says, if you have more faith you have more victory. 00:52:51.59\00:52:53.98 Isn't that what Christ said? 00:52:54.01\00:52:55.56 If we have more faith, more enthusiasm, more zeal 00:52:55.59\00:52:58.60 we'd have more victory. 00:52:58.63\00:53:00.84 And then finally, even after Elisha dies, 00:53:00.87\00:53:05.97 he dies and they bury him, great prophet of God. 00:53:06.00\00:53:09.09 It's interesting, Elijah, 00:53:09.12\00:53:11.58 he goes to heaven in a fiery chariot, 00:53:11.61\00:53:13.91 Elisha gets a double portion of Elijah's spirit 00:53:13.94\00:53:16.54 but he gets sick like everyone else gets old and dies. 00:53:16.57\00:53:19.57 Long life of ministry and miracles. 00:53:19.60\00:53:22.15 So even though you have a double portion 00:53:22.18\00:53:23.69 the Holy Spirit it doesn't mean 00:53:23.72\00:53:24.81 you may not get sick physically. Amen. 00:53:24.84\00:53:27.17 Even the Apostle Paul filled with the Spirit, 00:53:27.20\00:53:29.57 he get sick or something, 00:53:29.60\00:53:30.67 the thorn that that didn't go away. 00:53:30.70\00:53:32.78 So friends don't get discouraged in this life, 00:53:32.81\00:53:35.04 we do get old, we do get sick. 00:53:35.07\00:53:36.83 God can still give you a double portion of His Spirit. Amen. 00:53:36.86\00:53:40.83 After he dies and he is buried, 00:53:40.86\00:53:43.53 talk about being full of the Holy Spirit, 00:53:43.56\00:53:46.01 this is an incredible story 00:53:46.04\00:53:47.32 where they're about to conduct another funeral. 00:53:47.35\00:53:50.24 Elisha has been buried. 00:53:50.27\00:53:51.87 They're taking this man out to bury him, he's dead. 00:53:51.90\00:53:55.66 You hope so they're gonna bury him, right? 00:53:55.69\00:53:58.87 And they notice that there's a band of Moabites raiders 00:53:58.90\00:54:01.69 that are roaming the country. 00:54:01.72\00:54:02.84 And they said, "Oh, man, we got to run for our lives 00:54:02.87\00:54:04.42 but we don't want to be disrespectful of the dead. 00:54:04.45\00:54:06.52 What do we do? 00:54:06.55\00:54:07.62 We can't stay out here to this funeral. 00:54:07.65\00:54:09.02 They are near the cemetery." 00:54:09.05\00:54:10.64 They said, here's the grave Elisha, 00:54:10.67\00:54:12.13 it's got a top on it. 00:54:12.16\00:54:13.34 We move the stone aside, we can drop this body 00:54:13.37\00:54:15.68 and we will come back later. 00:54:15.71\00:54:17.05 So they move aside the stone, 00:54:17.08\00:54:18.63 they drop in the body of their friend. 00:54:18.66\00:54:20.43 When his feet hit-- 00:54:20.46\00:54:22.00 when his body hits the bones of Elijah, 00:54:22.03\00:54:25.14 he yells and he comes back to life. 00:54:25.17\00:54:29.42 Boy, I tell you, Elisha was so spirit filled 00:54:29.45\00:54:33.31 that even after his death he gives life. 00:54:33.34\00:54:37.67 Now that's not a type of Christ. 00:54:37.70\00:54:40.30 He's giving in life through his death. 00:54:40.33\00:54:44.53 This is what Jesus does for you and me. 00:54:44.56\00:54:47.70 You and I through the death of Christ. 00:54:47.73\00:54:51.08 If you get a hold of that if you touch that 00:54:51.11\00:54:53.66 it can infuse you with new life. This is the story the gospel. 00:54:53.69\00:54:57.96 Is it just my imagination friends 00:54:57.99\00:55:00.39 or can you see Christ through all these Old Testament stories? 00:55:00.42\00:55:04.01 Jesus is here everywhere and He wants you to recognize 00:55:04.04\00:55:07.83 that this in the volume of the book 00:55:07.86\00:55:12.21 Christ said it is written of Him. 00:55:12.24\00:55:14.66 He's not just in the New Testament 00:55:14.69\00:55:16.81 He's all through the Old Testament. 00:55:16.84\00:55:18.29 You search the scriptures for 00:55:18.32\00:55:19.76 and then you think you have everlasting life, 00:55:19.79\00:55:21.89 these are they that testify of Me. 00:55:21.92\00:55:25.67 And beginning at Moses 00:55:25.70\00:55:26.92 and all the prophets Christ expounded unto then 00:55:26.95\00:55:29.18 and all the scriptures He said that, 00:55:29.21\00:55:30.77 New Testament wasn't even written yet. 00:55:30.80\00:55:32.35 He expounded unto them in all the scriptures, 00:55:32.38\00:55:34.13 this is all they had, the things concerning himself. 00:55:34.16\00:55:37.51 I would like to read some of those sermons that Jesus gave 00:55:37.54\00:55:39.94 but I bet you that He talked about 00:55:39.97\00:55:41.35 Moses and Joseph and David and Elijah and Elisha 00:55:41.38\00:55:45.30 and how they are all types of Christ. 00:55:45.33\00:55:47.33 And they are there to inspire you and me 00:55:47.36\00:55:48.96 that we can have that spirit that they had. 00:55:48.99\00:55:51.63 James tells us Elijah was a man 00:55:51.66\00:55:55.01 subject to the same passions as you and me. 00:55:55.04\00:55:57.70 He struggled and wrestled with sin and temptation 00:55:57.73\00:56:00.23 just like you do, just like I do 00:56:00.26\00:56:02.80 and yet he prayed and the heavens 00:56:02.83\00:56:04.83 held their rain for three and a half years. 00:56:04.86\00:56:06.60 He prayed again and the rain came down. 00:56:06.63\00:56:09.98 And that would lead me to think 00:56:10.01\00:56:11.09 that you and I can pray for the rain to come down. 00:56:11.12\00:56:13.58 I'm not just talking about the drought in California 00:56:13.61\00:56:15.78 I am talking about the Holy Spirit, right? Amen. 00:56:15.81\00:56:18.52 And that God will send the rain. 00:56:18.55\00:56:20.51 The same God that heard 00:56:20.54\00:56:21.60 the prayers of Elijah and Elisha will hear our prayers. 00:56:21.63\00:56:24.79 Wonderful examples for you and me. 00:56:24.82\00:56:26.87 Did Elijah have a son? 00:56:26.90\00:56:31.01 He had an adopted son, that was Elisha. 00:56:31.04\00:56:34.94 Why did Elisha ask for 00:56:34.97\00:56:37.21 a double portion of Elijah's spirit? 00:56:37.24\00:56:39.08 Was he being greedy? 00:56:39.11\00:56:41.25 You know the Bible says, 00:56:41.28\00:56:42.31 you were to give your first born son a double portion. 00:56:42.34\00:56:46.38 Elisha walked away from his earthly parents, 00:56:46.41\00:56:49.06 his earthly inheritance and he said Elisha, 00:56:49.09\00:56:51.58 I want the only inheritance you can give me, 00:56:51.61\00:56:53.47 I want your spirit. 00:56:53.50\00:56:55.24 So you really had a father-son relationship 00:56:55.27\00:56:57.77 between Elijah and Elisha. 00:56:57.80\00:56:59.91 That's why when he went to heaven Elisha said, 00:56:59.94\00:57:02.51 "My father, my father, 00:57:02.54\00:57:04.09 the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof." 00:57:04.12\00:57:07.54 And in Elisha and Elijah you see 00:57:07.57\00:57:10.16 the love of the father for the son 00:57:10.19\00:57:12.32 and the son for the father. 00:57:12.35\00:57:14.08 How willing was Elijah to give his spirit to Elisha? 00:57:14.11\00:57:19.03 How willing is Jesus to give His Spirit to you? 00:57:19.06\00:57:23.88 How much should our Heavenly Father love us 00:57:23.91\00:57:26.37 and that He gave His Son? 00:57:26.40\00:57:28.22 Wonderful stories, wonderful lessons in this story. 00:57:28.25\00:57:32.22 Thank you, for joining us for this broadcast. 00:57:32.25\00:57:34.34 If you've missed any of our Amazing Facts programs 00:57:34.37\00:57:36.65 visit our website at amazingfacts.org. 00:57:36.68\00:57:39.08 There you'll find and archive of our television 00:57:39.11\00:57:41.22 and radio programs including Amazing Facts Presents, 00:57:41.25\00:57:44.57 Central Study Hour, Everlasting Gospel, 00:57:44.60\00:57:47.19 Bible Answers Live and Wonders in The Word. 00:57:47.22\00:57:50.03 You'll also find a storehouse of biblical resources, 00:57:50.06\00:57:52.43 gear towards answering 00:57:52.46\00:57:53.49 some of your most difficult questions. 00:57:53.52\00:57:55.32 And our online Bible School is just a click away. 00:57:55.35\00:57:58.06 One location, so many possibilities, 00:57:58.09\00:58:00.48 amazingfacts.org. 00:58:00.51\00:58:02.26
