It's been 2000 years since the glorious light of the cross 00:00:09.40\00:00:12.65 illuminated a world veiled in darkness and confusion about the 00:00:12.68\00:00:15.90 character of God. And still today the greatest need of 00:00:15.93\00:00:19.11 mankind is a revelation of God's love as revealed in the life of 00:00:19.15\00:00:23.84 Christ. Amazing Facts presents the Everlasting Gospel with 00:00:23.87\00:00:27.26 Pastor Doug Batchelor coming to you each week from Sacramento 00:00:27.29\00:00:30.65 Central Church in sunny California. Discover hidden 00:00:30.68\00:00:33.81 treasures in God's word today. 00:00:33.84\00:00:37.96 And today we're going to talk about a story that we've heard 00:00:38.00\00:00:41.19 about and even Hollywood has talked about and it's dealing 00:00:41.23\00:00:45.90 with the subject of the Queen of Sheba. You find this story in 00:00:45.93\00:00:50.12 I Kings chapter 10. You can find it in a couple of parallel 00:00:50.15\00:00:54.31 passages. Little bit of additions and variation 00:00:54.34\00:00:58.41 between the two. I Kings chapter 10 verse 1 and we'll be looking 00:00:58.45\00:01:03.33 at this together. I Kings chapter 10 verse 1: Now when the 00:01:03.36\00:01:08.74 Queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the 00:01:08.78\00:01:14.44 name of the Lord, she came to test him with hard questions and 00:01:14.48\00:01:19.63 she came to Jerusalem with a very great retinue; with camels 00:01:19.67\00:01:25.08 the bore spices, very much gold and precious stones. And when 00:01:25.12\00:01:29.64 she came to Solomon she spoke with him about all that was in 00:01:29.67\00:01:34.22 her heart. So this goes down in history as an unusual story 00:01:34.26\00:01:38.90 because first of all it's a royal visit. Usually kings and 00:01:38.93\00:01:43.34 queens send ambassadors, they send messages, they send 00:01:43.38\00:01:47.72 emissaries. When one king would go and visit another king it was 00:01:47.76\00:01:53.09 a sign of submission. You know it's usually the lesser would go 00:01:53.13\00:01:57.52 to and visit the greater. The greater, like a mountain, would 00:01:57.56\00:02:01.08 say I'm not going anywhere. If you want to talk to me you come 00:02:01.12\00:02:04.61 to me. I'm not saying that Solomon had that attitude but 00:02:04.64\00:02:07.82 the very fact that she came was a tremendous honor when a queen 00:02:07.86\00:02:12.30 comes to visit you. She came in person. She had heard about the 00:02:12.33\00:02:16.60 wonderful wisdom of Solomon and she wanted to see it firsthand. 00:02:16.64\00:02:23.81 You know it was back in May 2007 when Queen Elizabeth visited 00:02:23.84\00:02:29.52 our country and she made a royal visit. She was coming to 00:02:29.56\00:02:34.18 commemorate the 400th anniversary of a founding of an 00:02:34.21\00:02:38.76 English town on our continent called Jamestown. I was thought 00:02:38.80\00:02:42.33 that was a very interesting significance that the Queen of 00:02:42.36\00:02:45.75 England comes for the 400th anniversary of the celebration 00:02:45.78\00:02:49.10 of the English settlement on our shores. And it was a big event, 00:02:49.14\00:02:55.55 you know. All the cameras got out and they gave her, as you 00:02:55.58\00:02:58.06 would say, a royal welcome. Now as we prepare to study the story 00:02:58.10\00:03:01.93 of the Queen of Sheba, I just want you to know that this was 00:03:01.97\00:03:06.17 the fulfillment of a prophecy. If you've got your Bibles, turn 00:03:06.20\00:03:11.57 to Psalm 72. We've talked before about how King Solomon was 00:03:11.60\00:03:16.67 really a type of Christ. Solomon was the son of David just as 00:03:16.70\00:03:21.74 Jesus is called the Son of David. King David wrote some 00:03:21.77\00:03:26.29 time before this happened, his last psalm. You might be 00:03:26.33\00:03:30.77 thinking the last psalm of David was 150. David didn't 00:03:30.81\00:03:35.24 write all of the psalms. He wrote many of them. Asaph, the 00:03:35.27\00:03:39.03 chief musician, wrote many of them. But the last psalm of 00:03:39.06\00:03:42.71 David is Psalm 72. It says so right at the end of the psalm. 00:03:42.74\00:03:47.50 And it says, verse 1, a psalm for Solomon. David wrote a psalm 00:03:47.54\00:03:51.40 for his son Solomon who he knew would be king. We're not going 00:03:51.44\00:03:55.27 to read all of this, but just notice, it's a psalm for 00:03:55.30\00:03:58.44 Solomon. Give the king thy judgments O God and 00:03:58.47\00:04:01.50 righteousness unto the king's son. Solomon, like Jesus, was 00:04:01.54\00:04:06.06 the son of David, the king of righteousness. Go to verse 10: 00:04:06.09\00:04:10.49 The kings of Tarshish and the isles will bring presents. The 00:04:10.52\00:04:14.80 kings of Sheba and Seba will offer their gifts. Now this is 00:04:14.84\00:04:18.78 David writing. Did that happen? David was not only a psalmist 00:04:18.81\00:04:23.34 and a king, he was a prophet. The royalty of Sheba did bring 00:04:23.37\00:04:27.92 gifts to Solomon. Yea kings shall fall down before him and 00:04:27.96\00:04:32.44 all nations will serve him. Now this is not just prophecy about 00:04:32.48\00:04:36.49 Solomon. This is a prophecy ultimately about Jesus. And then 00:04:36.53\00:04:40.96 you can read verse 15. And he shall live and to him shall be 00:04:40.99\00:04:45.54 given the gold of Sheba. There you've got it again. To Solomon 00:04:45.58\00:04:49.46 shall be give the gold of Sheba. Sheba represented the gentile 00:04:49.49\00:04:53.41 nations. To Christ the worship and the recognition and the 00:04:53.44\00:04:57.29 wealth of the gentiles come. And then you read in Psalm 72, the 00:04:57.33\00:05:01.99 last verse, verse 20, the prayers of David the son of 00:05:02.02\00:05:06.76 Jesse are ended. Now this is the last psalm of David. I think 00:05:06.80\00:05:10.32 that's interesting that the last psalm of David he writes sort of 00:05:10.35\00:05:14.14 as a will for his son, that he would prosper, that he would be 00:05:14.17\00:05:17.55 righteous and a prophecy that other nations would come to him 00:05:17.59\00:05:21.76 as long as he was faithful and he could be a witness for them. 00:05:21.79\00:05:25.58 So then you've got the record in the Bible of this royal visit. 00:05:25.61\00:05:29.47 You can also read the parallel verse if you go to II Chronicles 00:05:29.50\00:05:33.56 Chronicles comes right after Kings, II Chronicles chapter 9 00:05:33.59\00:05:37.32 verse 1. It also tells about the visit of the Queen of Sheba. 00:05:37.36\00:05:41.06 Now in our last study on Solomon I told you that during 00:05:41.09\00:05:43.67 this time in Solomon's history it was the zenith or the highest 00:05:43.71\00:05:48.62 part in the history of King Solomon. And so kind of the 00:05:48.65\00:05:53.29 cherry on the banana split, so to speak, was the visit from the 00:05:53.33\00:05:57.17 Queen of Sheba because it represented the nations of the 00:05:57.20\00:06:00.87 world coming to Israel to learn about their God. What was the 00:06:00.91\00:06:06.58 purpose for God calling Israel as a nation? Because they were 00:06:06.61\00:06:10.54 the chosen people he just said you know I like you better than 00:06:10.58\00:06:15.25 everyone else. No. He chose them to be a nation of kings and 00:06:15.28\00:06:19.40 priests that they might be witnesses to the other nations. 00:06:19.44\00:06:23.58 That they might share their light. Their nation was to be a 00:06:23.61\00:06:27.50 light on the hill for all nations and when the Queen of 00:06:27.53\00:06:31.21 Sheba came to Solomon because she had heard about his God 00:06:31.25\00:06:34.90 this was the ultimate fulfillment of that prophecy 00:06:34.93\00:06:38.28 of what God wanted from his people, for all nations to flow 00:06:38.32\00:06:43.15 unto them. Let me read this to you first. II Chronicles 9 verse 00:06:43.19\00:06:48.22 And the Queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon and she 00:06:48.26\00:06:53.26 came to Solomon with hard questions at Jerusalem with a 00:06:53.29\00:06:56.82 very great company and camels that carried spices and gold in 00:06:56.86\00:07:01.01 abundance and precious stones. And she came into the Solomon 00:07:01.04\00:07:05.23 and spoke to him of all that was in her heart and Solomon told 00:07:05.26\00:07:09.29 her all her questions and there was nothing hid from Solomon 00:07:09.33\00:07:13.48 that he did not tell her. Is there any prayer that you can 00:07:13.52\00:07:17.60 pray to Jesus that he does not have an answer for? Is there any 00:07:17.64\00:07:21.95 question you might ask Jesus that he is bewildered by? 00:07:21.98\00:07:26.03 Is there any enigma too hard for him, any conundrum he can't 00:07:26.07\00:07:30.23 grapple with, or does Jesus know all things? So Solomon, again, 00:07:30.27\00:07:35.35 here is a type of Jesus who is the real King of kings. And you 00:07:35.39\00:07:40.44 must you know imagine what it must have looked like, this 00:07:40.47\00:07:44.92 armada of camels coming across the desert because they'd heard 00:07:44.96\00:07:49.31 about the wisdom of Solomon. Now maybe before I go too far I 00:07:49.35\00:07:53.58 should answer this question, where is Sheba? Where is this 00:07:53.61\00:07:57.81 nation, this country, called Sheba. There's been some 00:07:57.84\00:08:00.71 speculation about it. If you talk to our Ethiopian friends 00:08:00.75\00:08:04.22 they have a very rich tradition that their land was the land of 00:08:04.26\00:08:08.08 Sheba. And while there is some truth to that, let me explain. 00:08:08.12\00:08:12.02 You've got to look at the map here. If you see the straits 00:08:12.05\00:08:15.88 there that separate the Red Sea from the Arabian Sea it's a very 00:08:15.92\00:08:20.41 narrow strait and there was country in southern Arabia 00:08:20.44\00:08:25.33 called Sheba. You can see it's the green territory there, but 00:08:25.37\00:08:28.71 then also their kingdom reached across that very narrow channel 00:08:28.75\00:08:32.06 into Ethiopia. But the royal residence was actually in 00:08:32.09\00:08:36.46 southern Arabia. Matter of fact Sheba means south country. 00:08:36.49\00:08:40.93 It was the farthest south you could go in Arabia and that's 00:08:40.96\00:08:44.52 why it got that name. It was a very rich country, not only 00:08:44.56\00:08:48.09 because evidently they had access to the mines of Ophir 00:08:48.12\00:08:51.58 and the golden mines of Havilah, but they controlled the naval 00:08:51.62\00:08:59.02 trade that went from the Indian ocean and the Pacific 00:08:59.05\00:09:03.01 and the Arabian Ocean up into the Mediterranean and Europe. 00:09:03.05\00:09:06.79 All of that trade had to go through that isthmus there. 00:09:06.82\00:09:10.49 How many of you have heard about the Somali pirates today? Well 00:09:10.53\00:09:14.43 that's right there off that horn of Africa. It's the same trade 00:09:14.46\00:09:17.46 route that they're controlling and that's why they're able to 00:09:17.50\00:09:21.05 exploit it the way they do. Well the country of Sheba controlled 00:09:21.08\00:09:24.60 that. They got a tariff, they got a tax from everybody that 00:09:24.63\00:09:27.53 brought they goods. They had the richest goods from all over the 00:09:27.57\00:09:30.85 world came through them. They also had an access to the gold 00:09:30.89\00:09:34.14 mines of Africa. So it was probably there in southern 00:09:34.17\00:09:37.34 Arabia. But it was a very wealthy country. Now that 00:09:37.37\00:09:40.47 also means when you consider where she was coming from, you 00:09:40.51\00:09:43.56 take your little ruler on your map when you get home and you'll 00:09:43.59\00:09:48.19 find out that the trip was 1,400 miles. The fact that she was 00:09:48.23\00:09:52.57 able to go, and that was one way, she had to go home. One 00:09:52.60\00:09:58.35 thousand four hundred miles to hear somebody's wisdom, you 00:09:58.38\00:10:04.06 must really treasure wisdom if you're going to make a trip that 00:10:04.10\00:10:08.19 far. And that is what the Bible says is the most important 00:10:08.22\00:10:11.78 thing. You need to commend her. By the way, you know Jesus 00:10:11.82\00:10:15.07 speaks about the Queen of Sheba. If you ever want to know if 00:10:15.11\00:10:18.30 something is legend of true, find out what Jesus said about 00:10:18.34\00:10:21.86 it. Jesus speaks about the visit of the Queen of Sheba as a 00:10:21.89\00:10:25.34 historical fact. I think you can believe it. Matthew 12:42, Jesus 00:10:25.38\00:10:31.21 says the Queen of the South, that's what Sheba means, will 00:10:31.24\00:10:34.65 rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it 00:10:34.69\00:10:38.16 for she came from the ends of the earth. So when Jesus refers 00:10:38.20\00:10:41.28 to the country of Sheba how does he call it? The ends of the 00:10:41.31\00:10:43.88 earth. I mean when you sent to Sheba back then you came to the 00:10:43.92\00:10:46.46 sea and it stopped. It was as far south as you could go in 00:10:46.49\00:10:49.94 Arabia. Christ says it was the ends of the earth. To hear the 00:10:49.97\00:10:53.95 wisdom of Solomon and then Jesus said, a greater than Solomon is 00:10:53.98\00:10:57.93 here. Now if I lived back in Bible times during the time of 00:10:57.96\00:11:01.38 Solomon, knowing what I know now, I'd want to get there. 00:11:01.41\00:11:04.76 I would want to see the temple that he built. I would want to 00:11:04.80\00:11:08.56 hear the wisdom of Solomon. I'd like to look at Solomon and see 00:11:08.60\00:11:12.34 if he looked more like David or Bathsheba. But I'd like to be 00:11:12.38\00:11:15.97 there. I'd like to hear, of course, I have to speak Hebrew, 00:11:16.01\00:11:20.11 but assuming I could, I'd like to hear the gems of truth and 00:11:20.15\00:11:24.64 wisdom and knowledge that poured from his lips. He had to sit as 00:11:24.68\00:11:28.26 a judge every day and hear all kinds of very difficult cases. 00:11:28.30\00:11:31.67 You remember the two women that brought the baby and how he 00:11:31.70\00:11:35.00 dealt with that? That was only a small sample of what Solomon did 00:11:35.04\00:11:39.22 to demonstrate his wisdom on a daily basis. Wouldn't you want 00:11:39.25\00:11:43.84 to hear Solomon? Jesus said, A greater than Solomon is here. 00:11:43.88\00:11:48.44 There was another Son of David that was even wiser than 00:11:48.47\00:11:52.48 Solomon and that's Jesus. That other King. You have the wisdom 00:11:52.52\00:11:56.37 of Jesus right here. Of course, we've got a lot of the wisdom 00:11:56.41\00:12:00.52 of Solomon here too don't we in the Proverbs? So she came to 00:12:00.55\00:12:03.81 hear it. Now you might ask the question, how did she hear 00:12:03.85\00:12:07.04 about Solomon? How'd she hear about this wisdom. Well no doubt 00:12:07.08\00:12:11.52 all of the sea traffic and the caravans that came through her 00:12:11.56\00:12:15.97 country. You can read for instance in I Kings 9, that's 00:12:16.00\00:12:19.83 the previous chapter, where the Queen of Sheba appears in 00:12:19.86\00:12:23.62 chapter 10; Then Hiram sent his servants with the fleet seamen 00:12:23.66\00:12:27.45 who knew the sea to work with the servants of Solomon, these 00:12:27.48\00:12:31.57 sailors went down there, and they went to Ophir to acquire 00:12:31.60\00:12:35.62 420 talents of gold. A talent's about 60 pounds. From there they 00:12:35.66\00:12:40.31 brought it to King Solomon. So as these ships went back and 00:12:40.34\00:12:43.23 forth they would have to stop at the straits there where the tax 00:12:43.27\00:12:49.53 collectors for Sheba lived and she would hear these reports 00:12:49.56\00:12:52.81 when they stopped to be reprovisioned, about the wisdom 00:12:52.85\00:12:56.03 and the glory of Solomon and she'd see their ships going back 00:12:56.07\00:12:59.23 with all this gold and she'd say wow, what kind of king is this? 00:12:59.26\00:13:03.28 What kind of king is this. And she was searching for the truth. 00:13:03.32\00:13:07.64 Now we don't know exactly what the religion of Sheba was but it 00:13:07.67\00:13:11.96 was probably a melting pot of the religions of the world 00:13:11.99\00:13:16.23 because it's often true that when you have a country that is 00:13:16.26\00:13:20.53 sort of on a trade route, they would pick up some of the pieces 00:13:20.56\00:13:25.02 of truth in religion from many different belief systems. And so 00:13:25.06\00:13:29.49 she probably had sort of a potluck of different beliefs 00:13:29.52\00:13:32.45 from the different gods of the different nations and she was 00:13:32.49\00:13:36.95 wondering what is the truth? She heard little snippets and 00:13:36.98\00:13:41.37 little quotes and reports about the judgments of Solomon and the 00:13:41.41\00:13:45.29 glory of Solomon and the wisdom of Solomon. She thought this 00:13:45.33\00:13:50.09 king knows the truth. He has the truth. I want that truth. 00:13:50.12\00:13:54.30 She cherished it more than anything. You know so many in 00:13:54.33\00:13:58.44 positions of leadership become cynical. Like when Jesus stood 00:13:58.48\00:14:02.97 before Pilate and he spoke of the truth. There one wiser than 00:14:03.00\00:14:07.23 Solomon was in the presence of Pilate and that ruler said, Ah 00:14:07.26\00:14:10.63 what is truth? Who can know? And he didn't even wait for an 00:14:10.66\00:14:13.96 answer from Jesus. How sad. Well that wasn't the attitude of the 00:14:14.00\00:14:17.29 Queen of Sheba. She was willing to give everything and go to the 00:14:17.33\00:14:20.59 ends of the earth to find out what is truth. You know some 00:14:20.62\00:14:25.18 things are absolute and there is an absolute truth. I'm surprised 00:14:25.22\00:14:28.90 how often I hear people say well you know your truth is truth 00:14:28.93\00:14:32.37 is true for you and then I got my truth that's true for me and 00:14:32.40\00:14:35.54 my truth is just as important as your truth. It's like everybody 00:14:35.58\00:14:38.69 has their own truth and whatever you think is true is true. 00:14:38.72\00:14:42.38 You make it true by believing it. That's a very deadly belief, 00:14:42.42\00:14:46.56 that every man can sort of just create his own truth. Solomon 00:14:46.59\00:14:50.55 said, there is a way that seems right to a man but the end 00:14:50.58\00:14:54.47 thereof are the ways of death. There is only one truth friends. 00:14:54.51\00:14:58.57 We cannot make our own, Amen? So she had heard about this 00:14:58.60\00:15:03.86 wherever the ships of Tarshish sailed they carried the 00:15:03.89\00:15:09.08 wonderful report of Solomon. Why did she come all that distance? 00:15:09.12\00:15:14.58 Well you can even look back to some of Solomon's gems of truth. 00:15:14.62\00:15:20.05 Solomon said in Proverbs 8, verse 11: For wisdom is better 00:15:20.08\00:15:25.19 than rubies and all things that one might desire cannot be 00:15:25.22\00:15:29.37 compared with her. Now we've already read enough about the 00:15:29.40\00:15:33.48 Queen of Sheba to know she was fabulously wealthy herself. Just 00:15:33.52\00:15:39.34 the constant income. You know it's amazing. In Saudi Arabia 00:15:39.38\00:15:44.64 today things now are sort of like they used to be back in her 00:15:44.68\00:15:48.64 day. You think how can they get so wealthy out there in the 00:15:48.68\00:15:52.01 desert? You ever wondered about that. How many of you have seen 00:15:52.04\00:15:56.14 some of the treasures of Dubai. They've built an indoor, out 00:15:56.17\00:16:00.55 there in the desert, they've built an indoor maul with a snow 00:16:00.58\00:16:04.41 skiing mountain. You've seen some of the pictures floating 00:16:04.45\00:16:07.91 around on the internet of that. The tallest building in the 00:16:07.95\00:16:11.23 world costing over a billion dollars, I forget, it's some 00:16:11.26\00:16:14.47 phenomenal amount. They're going to build one there that's over a 00:16:14.51\00:16:17.45 mile high now. In the desert. They've got a gold plated 00:16:17.48\00:16:21.58 Mercedes, some of these sheikhs that live there. Largest 00:16:21.62\00:16:25.46 airplane built is an airbus, I forget what the number is. 00:16:25.49\00:16:29.26 It's a double decker 747 is what it is. It is a real airbus. One 00:16:29.30\00:16:36.07 of these has recently been purchased by a sheikh, one of 00:16:36.10\00:16:38.19 the richest people in the world, multibillionaire, I think he's 00:16:38.23\00:16:42.04 paying three billion dollars, he bought one brand new. 00:16:42.07\00:16:45.36 He's going to outfit it as a flying palace for him and his 00:16:45.39\00:16:50.32 entourage and family. Out in the desert. Dubai was becoming 00:16:50.35\00:16:55.37 one of the most popular tourist attractions until this economic 00:16:55.40\00:17:00.39 unraveling that they've had because all the oil money that 00:17:00.42\00:17:03.35 was flowing in there. So just to let you know it can happen. 00:17:03.39\00:17:06.29 Out there in the desert, controlling that flow of those 00:17:06.32\00:17:09.73 continents through that strait, through the caravan trade. She 00:17:09.77\00:17:13.53 had lots of money. All the best spices and the best clothes and 00:17:13.57\00:17:17.17 the things from India and the Orient came through her front 00:17:17.20\00:17:21.46 yard and she got to take the best of everything. But she was 00:17:21.49\00:17:25.16 not happy. She wasn't satisfied. She wanted to know what is 00:17:25.19\00:17:28.22 truth. You know Jesus said you'll know the truth and the 00:17:28.26\00:17:31.22 truth will set you free. That's what she cherished. She wanted 00:17:31.26\00:17:35.01 that wisdom. She wanted that knowledge. So her crews and her 00:17:35.04\00:17:38.50 ambassadors had heard about it. She could have sent somebody, 00:17:38.53\00:17:42.84 but she wanted to see it first hand. I Kings chapter 10: When 00:17:42.87\00:17:47.78 she heard of the fame of Solomon she wanted answers. You know I 00:17:47.81\00:17:52.93 actually found a quote where it says in Psalm 19 verse 10: More 00:17:52.97\00:17:57.15 to be desired are they than gold, speaking of the truth, the 00:17:57.19\00:18:01.25 law of the Lord, yea then much find gold, sweeter than honey 00:18:01.28\00:18:04.94 in the honeycomb. She had gold, she had the best food, she had 00:18:04.98\00:18:08.61 the spices, but she wanted truth. She head of Solomon's 00:18:08.64\00:18:13.32 wealth, she heard of his works, she heard of his wisdom and she 00:18:13.36\00:18:18.26 heard about his worship. It says she heard about the name of his 00:18:18.29\00:18:23.14 God. She wanted to know about his God. You know Josephus, the 00:18:23.17\00:18:26.94 famous Jewish historian, he talks about the Queen of Sheba. 00:18:26.97\00:18:30.91 He gives a little additional insight. Here's a quote from 00:18:30.94\00:18:34.81 Josephus: When this queen, this is from the writings of Flavius 00:18:34.85\00:18:39.36 Josephus, when the queen heard of the virtue and the prudence 00:18:39.39\00:18:44.29 of Solomon she had a great mind to see him. She being desirous 00:18:44.33\00:18:49.20 to be satisfied by her own experience and not by bare 00:18:49.23\00:18:53.23 hearing, for reports thus are likely enough to comply with a 00:18:53.27\00:18:57.21 false opinion. She resolved to come to him in order to have a 00:18:57.24\00:19:01.94 trial of his wisdom while she proposed questions of great 00:19:01.97\00:19:06.60 difficulty and entreated that he would solve their hidden meaning 00:19:06.64\00:19:10.02 She had a long time to think about those questions too during 00:19:10.05\00:19:14.48 that caravan journey across the desert 1,400 miles. Well it took 00:19:14.52\00:19:18.92 Lewis and Clark to cover that kind of distance, of course, 00:19:18.95\00:19:22.68 then they were doing some of it by river, it took them about a 00:19:22.72\00:19:26.42 year to get to the west coast; over two years round trip. 00:19:26.45\00:19:32.65 So she wanted to know what was the truth and she made that 00:19:32.69\00:19:36.95 great journey. She not only wanted to know, she wanted to 00:19:36.98\00:19:41.17 know for herself. It's one thing to say well you know my parents 00:19:41.21\00:19:45.55 they had an experience with the Lord, they were converted, 00:19:45.58\00:19:48.52 they're Christians and so I'm a Christian because they made a 00:19:48.56\00:19:52.00 decision. Or my grandparents or my great grandparents. And you 00:19:52.04\00:19:55.45 are trying to ride on the coat tails or the apron strings 00:19:55.48\00:19:59.58 of some experience that your parents or grandparents had. 00:19:59.62\00:20:03.06 You know, you have to admire the Queen of Sheba because 00:20:03.09\00:20:06.46 though she was a queen and she could send somebody, she could 00:20:06.50\00:20:11.01 have said Solomon could you please text message me, but she 00:20:11.04\00:20:15.99 didn't. She said I want to see for myself. I want to experience 00:20:16.03\00:20:20.15 for myself. Friends, do you want your own experience with the Son 00:20:20.19\00:20:24.28 of David, Jesus? Are you satisfied to have it vicariously 00:20:24.31\00:20:28.48 through several generations. It's not going to be enough. 00:20:28.52\00:20:32.55 You want to have it yourself, it needs to be personal. 00:20:32.58\00:20:36.54 Luke 11:31. I quoted Matthew. Here's Luke's quote. The queen 00:20:36.58\00:20:40.57 of the south will rise up in judgment with the men of this 00:20:40.60\00:20:44.51 generation to condemn them for she, the Queen of Sheba, in the 00:20:44.55\00:20:47.82 judgment, sounds like she's saved. Says she can rise up and 00:20:47.85\00:20:50.98 condemn those who did not appreciate the truth of Jesus. 00:20:51.02\00:20:54.08 For she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of 00:20:54.12\00:20:58.22 Solomon and indeed a greater than Solomon is here. God 00:20:58.25\00:21:02.82 invites us to come and to ply him with questions. In our 00:21:02.86\00:21:07.36 prayers, in our meditations as we read the word. It's okay to 00:21:07.40\00:21:10.68 not understand everything. That's why the Lord implores 00:21:10.71\00:21:14.11 us to reason with him. Isaiah chapter 1 verse 18: Come now 00:21:14.15\00:21:18.35 says the Lord, Let us reason together. He wants you to probe 00:21:18.38\00:21:22.27 him with questions. Though your sins be like scarlet they will 00:21:22.31\00:21:26.17 be white as snow. Now there's a question. How does that 00:21:26.20\00:21:29.07 happen. Can a leopard change his spots? Can an Ethiopian change 00:21:29.11\00:21:32.99 his skin? That's a mystery. Reason with him about that. 00:21:33.02\00:21:37.75 How can I have a changed heart? How can I be a new creature? 00:21:37.79\00:21:41.32 Now there's the big question we need an answer to, amen? 00:21:41.35\00:21:45.75 Though they be red like crimson they shall be as wool. Then 00:21:45.78\00:21:49.42 another wonderful point I want you to consider is she came all 00:21:49.45\00:21:52.66 that way and Solomon was a busy man. He's building temples. 00:21:52.69\00:21:55.83 He was a great builder. And he's involved in international trade. 00:21:55.87\00:22:00.39 He had hundreds of wives and concubines. I mean you know how 00:22:00.42\00:22:04.89 many weddings you have to plan for? You know how much time that 00:22:04.93\00:22:08.99 takes. He was busy. Okay you've got another wedding today on 00:22:09.02\00:22:13.05 your schedule. So here you've got this busy king and she says 00:22:14.18\00:22:17.41 I'd like to have an appointment with you. He stops what he's 00:22:17.44\00:22:21.07 doing and he gives her the time that she needs. He receives her. 00:22:21.10\00:22:24.70 He receives her. Who does Solomon the son of David 00:22:24.73\00:22:28.67 represent? Jesus the Son of David. Christ even makes a 00:22:28.70\00:22:32.57 comparison, doesn't he, between Solomon and himself. Did Solomon 00:22:32.61\00:22:36.01 stop and have time for her? Does anything in the record that 00:22:36.04\00:22:39.82 we read say that he was really busy. He gave her all the time 00:22:39.86\00:22:44.94 and attention she asked for. A king. I mean that's a lot to 00:22:44.97\00:22:49.04 think about that Jesus would have that kind of time to give 00:22:49.08\00:22:53.53 us. If Solomon would give it to Sheba. By the way she showed 00:22:53.57\00:22:58.14 she was interested. She came seeking. She had put so much 00:22:58.17\00:23:02.33 time and energy into seeking. How could Solomon tell her no? 00:23:02.37\00:23:06.63 When someone comes all that way. You know sometimes I'll do an 00:23:06.66\00:23:10.79 evangelistic meeting. I'll go to another part of the world to do 00:23:10.82\00:23:14.23 this evangelistic meeting. And they'll be people who are living 00:23:14.26\00:23:17.74 in a house or a hut right next door to the stadium and they 00:23:17.78\00:23:21.38 don't come and it kind of hurts me and I'll chastise the 00:23:21.42\00:23:24.57 neighborhood and say look I came all the way from the United 00:23:24.61\00:23:27.62 States to share with you. I want you to walk the next 300 yards. 00:23:27.65\00:23:32.25 And I kind of shame them into coming. Whatever it takes, right 00:23:32.28\00:23:37.60 When someone puts all that energy and time into seeing and 00:23:37.64\00:23:42.27 spending a little time with you, you want to see them. And I 00:23:42.30\00:23:46.19 expect that she probably sent riders out ahead before she came 00:23:46.22\00:23:50.08 to announce her arrival and to make sure that the king 00:23:50.11\00:23:53.11 understood what her intentions were and he received her. Jesus 00:23:53.15\00:23:58.34 will receive you. Now. I've got to stop right here. Oh by the 00:23:58.38\00:24:03.48 way; Proverbs 18 verse 16, again I'm quoting from Solomon's 00:24:03.51\00:24:08.93 wisdom: A man's gift makes room for him and brings him before 00:24:08.96\00:24:13.47 great men. When the messengers came from the Queen of Sheba to 00:24:13.50\00:24:17.50 Solomon and said you know there is not just a little caravan. 00:24:17.54\00:24:21.57 There is a big caravan and if you're bringing 120 talents of 00:24:21.60\00:24:27.06 gold, 120 talents, one talent 60 pounds, 120 x 60 pounds, 00:24:27.09\00:24:32.48 someone quick, what's 120 x 60? 7200 pounds of gold. That would 00:24:32.52\00:24:39.31 even make a camel tired. Where you're carrying that much gold 00:24:39.35\00:24:45.39 you not only have your caravan you've got an armed escort. 00:24:45.42\00:24:49.40 Then you've got all the food that you need to take those 00:24:49.44\00:24:52.83 people across the desert. She must have looked like the 00:24:52.87\00:24:56.19 children of Israel coming out of Egypt. I mean it was a big deal. 00:24:56.23\00:25:01.18 When Jacob was going to meet with his brother and his brother 00:25:01.21\00:25:06.13 was still miffed over his stealing the birthright, 00:25:06.16\00:25:08.13 what did Jacob do before he saw? He sent a gift out ahead. 00:25:08.17\00:25:12.14 And the gift prepared the way. Kind of softened his heart. 00:25:12.17\00:25:15.94 And so they said wow she's bringing a lot of gifts and when 00:25:15.98\00:25:19.15 people came to see a king they brought their gifts. That was 00:25:19.19\00:25:23.17 very common. And so she came bringing her gifts. Now I tell 00:25:23.20\00:25:27.71 what I wanted to say. In spite of the romantic notions you 00:25:27.75\00:25:32.19 might have or movies that have been produced it's a fable that 00:25:32.23\00:25:38.54 Solomon and the Queen of Sheba had a love affair. That's a 00:25:38.57\00:25:44.99 video cover I captured off line of Yil Brynner and Gina 00:25:45.02\00:25:51.37 Lollobridgida. Anyone remember them? My mom was actually in a 00:25:51.41\00:25:54.81 couple of movies with Yil Brynner. That's not my mom 00:25:54.84\00:25:58.52 though. Hollywood always wants to turn it into a romance. 00:25:58.56\00:26:03.70 Matter of fact, even the story of Moses in the 10 Commandments 00:26:03.74\00:26:07.03 they make it out like Moses had some sordid affair with the 00:26:07.07\00:26:10.73 Queen of Egypt. Where is that in the Bible? That's not in the 00:26:10.76\00:26:13.93 Bible is it, but you've all seen the 10 Commandments, right? 00:26:13.97\00:26:18.64 There's nothing at all in the text that says that Solomon and 00:26:18.67\00:26:22.95 Sheba had anything other than an intellectual relationship. 00:26:22.98\00:26:26.94 She was coming seeking truth. She had enough money she could 00:26:26.98\00:26:30.36 have any man she wanted. She didn't need Solomon like that. 00:26:30.39\00:26:33.74 Now the Ethiopians have a tradition that they had an 00:26:33.77\00:26:38.62 affair and she became pregnant and she went back home and she 00:26:38.66\00:26:44.19 gave birth to a son and that later Solomon sent the Ark of 00:26:44.22\00:26:48.10 the Covenant down and gave it to the Ethiopians and the 00:26:48.14\00:26:51.61 Ethiopians claim, we've got the real Ark of the Covenant 00:26:51.64\00:26:54.99 because Solomon gave it to the son of the Queen of Sheba but 00:26:55.03\00:26:58.25 there are some Bible problems with that. The Ark was still in 00:26:58.29\00:27:01.65 the temple up until the time of Hezekiah 100s of years later. 00:27:01.68\00:27:05.41 So that fable doesn't go along with the Bible. No offense to my 00:27:05.44\00:27:09.14 friends that may believe in the Ethiopian tradition. But there 00:27:09.17\00:27:12.61 are all kinds of stories that spring up. Everything you read 00:27:12.64\00:27:16.34 about the Bible, she was looking for truth, she had questions. 00:27:16.37\00:27:20.04 Her interest was a mental interest. Solomon had plenty of 00:27:20.07\00:27:24.08 wives also. Just because she was a woman and he was a man. We 00:27:24.12\00:27:27.23 don't know. She might have been 80 years old. You know the Bible 00:27:27.26\00:27:30.36 doesn't say. There's a picture for you. That ruins everything 00:27:30.40\00:27:33.47 doesn't it. She might not have looked at all like Gina 00:27:33.50\00:27:36.93 Lollobridgida. It says that she treasured truth. It doesn't say 00:27:36.97\00:27:42.75 she was some voluptuous seductive queen. It just tells 00:27:42.78\00:27:47.11 us she was interested in truth. So I just wanted to destroy 00:27:47.15\00:27:51.03 those romantic notions that you may have had in your mind 00:27:51.07\00:27:54.88 because it really ruins the real message of the story. She's 00:27:54.92\00:27:58.62 seeking for truth, she's seeking for wisdom, she's seeking for 00:27:58.65\00:28:01.95 answers, she's seeking for God, she's seeking for something that 00:28:01.99\00:28:05.59 can be trusted. It had nothing to do with any kind of sensual 00:28:05.62\00:28:09.19 relationship. Now I've just ruined it for you didn't I? 00:28:09.22\00:28:12.94 What was her response to what she found? II Chronicles chapter 00:28:12.98\00:28:21.08 9 verse 3: And the Queen of Sheba, she saw the wisdom of 00:28:21.11\00:28:26.36 Solomon and the house that he built. Now do you mark in your 00:28:26.40\00:28:29.98 Bibles? I'm just wondering. How many of you make any kind of 00:28:30.02\00:28:33.10 notation or marking in your Bible just for your own personal 00:28:33.13\00:28:35.56 By the way, it's okay to do that. By the way, if you didn't 00:28:35.59\00:28:38.32 do that if nobody ever did that your Bible would not have 00:28:38.35\00:28:41.04 chapters and verses. You know how we got chapters and verses? 00:28:41.07\00:28:43.58 Somebody took a long trip and they were reading their Bible 00:28:43.61\00:28:46.30 and they wanted to find things again and so they put in chapter 00:28:46.34\00:28:49.00 numbers and verse numbers and it helped them. Later it was 00:28:49.03\00:28:51.78 adopted by everybody. That's why you've got marking in your 00:28:51.81\00:28:55.72 Bible. You might circle some words in here. What did she see? 00:28:55.76\00:28:59.79 Look at II Chronicles 9, I'm reading verses 3-8: When she saw 00:28:59.83\00:29:04.21 the wisdom, you might circle the word wisdom of Solomon in the 00:29:04.24\00:29:09.43 house that he had built and the food, I've circled the word 00:29:09.46\00:29:14.62 house, I've circled the word food of his table and the 00:29:14.65\00:29:18.61 sitting of his servants, you can circle servants, even sitting of 00:29:18.65\00:29:23.20 his servants, and the attendance of his ministers, I've circled 00:29:23.23\00:29:28.82 ministers and their apparel and his cup bearers, I highlighted, 00:29:28.85\00:29:34.09 and their apparel and his burnt offerings that he offered up in 00:29:34.13\00:29:39.14 the house of Jehovah. You know you look at these things here 00:29:39.17\00:29:44.24 and this is really a picture of what God wants us to see in the 00:29:44.28\00:29:49.28 church. Notice what her response was. There was no spirit in her. 00:29:49.32\00:29:54.29 How many of you have a different translation there for 00:29:54.32\00:29:57.77 no more spirit? What does it say? I'm reading now from the 00:29:57.81\00:30:01.89 New King James. Does anyone have it there's no more breath in 00:30:01.93\00:30:06.22 their translation? It says there was no more breath in her. The 00:30:06.25\00:30:10.44 word for spirit there is ruach. In Hebrew it's the word breath. 00:30:10.47\00:30:14.63 It's the same word when God breathed into Adam he became 00:30:14.66\00:30:18.30 a living soul. Same word. Have you ever heard the expression 00:30:18.33\00:30:22.23 breathtaking? You know where that word comes from, where that 00:30:22.27\00:30:25.86 expression comes from? This verse. Have you ever heard the 00:30:25.89\00:30:30.58 expression I was breathless? I waited breathlessly? It was a 00:30:30.61\00:30:34.84 breath taking view. It comes from this verse where when the 00:30:34.88\00:30:39.04 Queen of Sheba saw the glory of Solomon, she heard the wisdom of 00:30:39.08\00:30:42.89 Solomon, she saw the servants of Solomon, the house that he built 00:30:42.92\00:30:46.70 She took all this in. She was breathless. That's where the 00:30:46.73\00:30:50.17 phrase, the expression, comes from. Lot of expression you use 00:30:50.21\00:30:54.38 come from the Bible. In the nick of time, the skin of my teeth. 00:30:54.41\00:30:57.68 That's from the book of Job. Turn the other cheek. Of course, 00:30:57.72\00:31:00.64 lot of expressions, as you know, they come from the Bible and 00:31:00.67\00:31:03.56 this is where that expression comes from. Queen of Sheba 00:31:03.59\00:31:07.11 couldn't find any words other than it took her breath away. 00:31:07.14\00:31:09.88 Have you ever heard a girl say ah he took my breath away. 00:31:09.92\00:31:13.28 First time that's recorded in history is when the Queen of 00:31:13.31\00:31:16.60 Sheba tried to explain what she saw. Maybe that's why they wrote 00:31:16.64\00:31:19.21 a romance novel about it. Solomon in his glory left her 00:31:19.24\00:31:23.50 breathless. It was a breath taking experience. Now I'm going 00:31:23.54\00:31:28.78 break those things you circled down a little bit. First of all, 00:31:28.81\00:31:34.02 she saw his possessions, his provisions, his people, his 00:31:34.05\00:31:40.54 piety and his place. His possessions, his provisions, his 00:31:40.58\00:31:47.00 people, his piety and his place. And it was extraordinary. His 00:31:47.04\00:31:52.12 wisdom: Now whose wisdom is it that Solomon's wisdom 00:31:52.15\00:31:57.27 represents? It's the wisdom of Jesus. Romans 11 verse 33 00:31:57.30\00:32:01.96 speaking of Christ, it says O the depth of the riches of the 00:32:02.00\00:32:07.61 wisdom and the knowledge of God. It's unsearchable, it's deep. 00:32:07.65\00:32:13.52 His house: Jesus said in John 14 you know this verse, verse 2: 00:32:13.56\00:32:17.86 In my father's house are many mansions. You think that the 00:32:17.90\00:32:21.48 house of Solomon was better than the mansions that Jesus is 00:32:21.52\00:32:25.03 preparing for us? Doesn't the Bible say that we can't even 00:32:25.06\00:32:28.50 imagine that. She saw his food. What kind of food does Jesus the 00:32:28.54\00:32:33.77 Son of David have? Christ said, I am the bread of life. He who 00:32:33.80\00:32:37.89 comes to me will never hunger. He who believes in me will never 00:32:37.92\00:32:41.98 thirst. Jesus said I am the bread that came down from 00:32:42.01\00:32:44.00 heaven. So that's the food in the house. The sitting of his 00:32:44.04\00:32:48.03 servants: Can you imagine what it must have looked like? You've 00:32:48.07\00:32:51.41 probably seen some important meetings where you've got these 00:32:51.44\00:32:54.66 assemblies of attendants from all over the place. They've got 00:32:54.69\00:32:57.96 this new building they built in Brussels for the European Union 00:32:57.99\00:33:01.35 and people from all over that union come and they sit and it's 00:33:01.39\00:33:04.67 just very exquisite. It's a beautiful design. It overwhelms 00:33:04.70\00:33:07.91 the sense of importance when you see these leaders from all these 00:33:07.95\00:33:10.72 nations in the European Union come together in this 00:33:10.75\00:33:13.35 beautifully designed building. Probably pretty dangerous 00:33:13.39\00:33:15.92 prophetically what happens there but that's a different point. 00:33:15.96\00:33:18.95 Can you imagine what it must have looked like. You've heard 00:33:18.98\00:33:22.30 of King Arthur's round table? Can imaging if Solomon invited 00:33:22.34\00:33:25.29 you for dinner. Have you ever seen a nice spread for dinner? 00:33:25.32\00:33:29.21 That was really something to behold. Can you imagine what it 00:33:29.24\00:33:32.58 will look like when you sit down and Jesus serves us and we sup 00:33:32.62\00:33:36.63 with him in his kingdom? Who's at that table sitting down with 00:33:36.67\00:33:40.44 Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, sitting down with King David and 00:33:40.48\00:33:45.32 the apostles? The Bible talks about that in Revelation 5 verse 00:33:45.36\00:33:49.86 Then I looked and I heard the voice of many angels round 00:33:49.90\00:33:54.17 about the throne and the living creatures and the elders and 00:33:54.20\00:33:58.92 the numbers of them was 10,000 times 10,000 and thousands of 00:33:58.96\00:34:03.65 thousands, his ministers, all around the throne and the 00:34:03.68\00:34:07.85 creatures and the leaders of other worlds. If you think it 00:34:07.88\00:34:11.04 was glorious in Solomon's cabinet, can you imagine what 00:34:11.08\00:34:14.17 it's like around Christ's table? The Bible tells us that some of 00:34:14.21\00:34:19.13 the kings of antiquity, they sat down and they had 27 other kings 00:34:19.16\00:34:24.05 that sat around them. The royalty. Can you imagine what 00:34:24.08\00:34:28.22 it must have been like at Solomon's table? And she sees 00:34:28.25\00:34:31.40 all this and he's trying to really put on a show because 00:34:31.44\00:34:35.78 he's got a queen and it is breathtaking. Because of course 00:34:35.82\00:34:40.09 Solomon was very rich as well. And their apparel. What kind of 00:34:40.13\00:34:44.37 apparel do they wear in Jesus' kingdom around the throne? 00:34:44.40\00:34:48.61 Revelation 4:4: Around the throne were 24 thrones and on 00:34:48.64\00:34:52.62 the thrones I saw 24 elders sitting clothed in white robes 00:34:52.65\00:34:55.92 and these aren't just any kind of white robe. They're like the 00:34:55.95\00:34:58.97 white robes you read about in Mark chapter 9 when Jesus was 00:34:59.00\00:35:02.26 glorified and his garments became so white they couldn't 00:35:02.29\00:35:05.48 find words to describe it. It's a different kind of white. It's 00:35:05.52\00:35:09.44 like a living white. It's like a flaming sun. And so the garments 00:35:09.48\00:35:13.37 of Solomon's servants were all clean. You didn't come with 00:35:13.40\00:35:16.69 stains into the presence of King Solomon. And by the way, we 00:35:16.72\00:35:20.04 can't have stains when we come into the presence of King Jesus. 00:35:20.08\00:35:23.50 That's what this life is for. He's to prepare a bride without 00:35:23.53\00:35:28.40 spot or wrinkle or any stain, right? Their apparel. And then 00:35:28.44\00:35:32.71 she saw his offerings to the Lord. Revelation 8 verse 4: 00:35:32.74\00:35:35.93 And the smoke of the incense were the prayers of the saints 00:35:35.97\00:35:39.73 ascended before God in the angel's hand. Now you remember 00:35:39.76\00:35:43.63 before Solomon even built the temple he went up to Gibeon. 00:35:43.67\00:35:47.47 You remember that study? And he offered a thousand animals. Can 00:35:47.51\00:35:52.88 you imagine the billowing cloud of this incense going up before 00:35:52.91\00:35:58.25 the Lord and the sacrifice. Matter of fact, I read this 00:35:58.28\00:36:03.04 morning, but I haven't checked on it that that word in Hebrew 00:36:03.08\00:36:06.87 is similar to the word holocaust because there was an absolute 00:36:06.91\00:36:10.67 holocaust of offerings. And I know you're going to think 00:36:10.70\00:36:13.74 that's kind of a grizzly word but Solomon when he offered to 00:36:13.77\00:36:16.78 the Lord it was a generous, a lavish, an outpouring of 00:36:16.81\00:36:20.49 offerings and they offered animal sacrifice back then. 00:36:20.53\00:36:24.14 And there was a whole army of priests bringing these offerings 00:36:24.18\00:36:27.95 to this enormous altar and the smoke would just billow up. 00:36:27.99\00:36:30.89 You know Josephus says something that's interesting, just an 00:36:30.93\00:36:34.59 amazing fact, a foot note, that the record of history is that in 00:36:34.63\00:36:37.79 spite of the fact there were all of these animals being brought 00:36:37.82\00:36:41.58 and sacrificed to Jehovah in the temple of Solomon, they never 00:36:41.61\00:36:45.34 saw a fly there. No insect ever entered the courtyard. 00:36:45.37\00:36:49.45 Now that's believable because it says that when Solomon 00:36:49.48\00:36:53.49 dedicated his temple fire came down from heaven, the glory of 00:36:53.53\00:36:57.47 God was there and that's a great repellant I suppose for insects. 00:36:57.50\00:37:01.64 If you could just sell that in a bottle of lotion, right? But 00:37:01.67\00:37:05.91 there were no insects they said during that. So she saw all of 00:37:05.95\00:37:10.87 this and it left her absolutely breathless. How did she respond? 00:37:10.90\00:37:15.79 This is beautiful. In II Chronicles 9 verse 6. 00:37:15.82\00:37:19.56 Matter of fact I'm going to read this to you actually not just 00:37:19.60\00:37:23.28 from my notes but I want to read it to you from the scripture. 00:37:23.31\00:37:30.78 Turn in your Bibles there. Go to verse 5. Then she said to the 00:37:30.81\00:37:36.35 king, it was a true report, and by the way I think this is the 00:37:36.39\00:37:41.99 first time she speaks. It was a true report that I heard in my 00:37:42.02\00:37:47.71 own land about your words and your wisdom. What is it about 00:37:47.74\00:37:53.16 Solomon that she heard that attracted her? His word. What is 00:37:53.19\00:37:57.31 it about Jesus that changes lives and changes worlds and 00:37:57.34\00:38:02.83 countries? It's his word and his wisdom. However I did not 00:38:02.86\00:38:08.13 believe their words and so I came and saw with my own eyes. 00:38:08.17\00:38:12.39 Is it important for us to see with our own eyes? Well you know 00:38:12.42\00:38:16.61 Jesus said, Blessed are those who believe without seeing. 00:38:16.64\00:38:19.16 He said to Thomas you believe because you've seen. Blessed are 00:38:19.20\00:38:22.93 those who believe his word without seeing. But you know 00:38:22.96\00:38:26.23 when you live there on the thoroughfare of all these 00:38:26.26\00:38:29.46 caravans you hear all kinds of stories. She wanted to know it 00:38:29.50\00:38:33.04 was the truth. She wanted a firsthand experience and you 00:38:33.07\00:38:35.89 can't really fault her for that. You know you need to see for 00:38:35.93\00:38:39.15 yourself some things. Christ said if I am lifted up I will 00:38:39.18\00:38:43.02 draw. You need to see. What brought about the conversion of 00:38:43.05\00:38:47.32 Paul? Saul saw the Lord. The thief on the cross was converted 00:38:47.35\00:38:51.08 when he saw the Lord. What is it that Zacheus wanted when he 00:38:51.12\00:38:55.44 climbed the tree? He wanted to see Jesus. When he saw him for 00:38:55.47\00:38:59.76 himself was his heart transformed? When Moses lifted 00:38:59.79\00:39:03.09 up that serpent in the wilderness and the people were 00:39:03.12\00:39:06.35 bitten by the venomous reptiles what did they need to do to 00:39:06.39\00:39:10.57 live? They needed to look. Can you look for someone else? 00:39:10.60\00:39:14.71 You've got someone sick in the tent and say well I'll look for 00:39:14.75\00:39:17.59 you. Would that save you? Or did you need to look for yourself? 00:39:17.63\00:39:20.44 We all need to see sometimes something for our self. Now we 00:39:20.47\00:39:24.87 can see in his words. I'm not saying you know that you've got 00:39:24.91\00:39:28.73 to see Jesus physically. But she wanted a personal experience. 00:39:28.77\00:39:32.91 We need to really commend her for that. I didn't believe till 00:39:32.95\00:39:37.73 I came and I saw. You come to Jesus the Son of David and you 00:39:37.76\00:39:42.13 see. Come to him the way you are. Indeed the half of your 00:39:42.16\00:39:46.66 greatness and wisdom was not told me. You exceed the fame of 00:39:46.69\00:39:51.03 what I heard. When the enemies of Jesus sent spies to try to 00:39:51.07\00:39:55.05 trap him they came back without Christ being arrested. And they 00:39:55.09\00:39:59.04 said why have you not brought him? You know what their 00:39:59.07\00:40:00.57 response was? Wow, never a man spake as this man. They were 00:40:00.61\00:40:07.55 breathless. The words of Christ. She said the half was not told 00:40:07.59\00:40:14.50 me. You know I remember the story of Marco Polo after his 00:40:14.53\00:40:18.15 adventures in China and all that he saw, incredible journey and 00:40:18.19\00:40:21.71 the time he lived there and learning the language and going 00:40:21.75\00:40:25.61 around the nation of China and the wonders of China and he came 00:40:25.65\00:40:28.80 back and he told the people in Venice and Venice was in the 00:40:28.84\00:40:33.04 dark ages during this time. It was like 1200 something. He told 00:40:33.08\00:40:36.72 them about this wall over 1000 miles long and they said Ah come 00:40:36.75\00:40:40.47 on, now that's another sailors story. He says they use paper 00:40:40.50\00:40:44.33 money. That'd been the craziest thing in the world. That's what 00:40:44.37\00:40:48.17 they said to him. And he was telling them about their food 00:40:48.20\00:40:51.60 and silk and how they harvest the worms and silk comes from 00:40:51.64\00:40:54.86 worms. They didn't believe it. They knew they bought silk, they 00:40:54.90\00:40:58.18 didn't know where it came from. And so as Marco Polo was telling 00:40:58.21\00:41:01.46 them all these stories, they said you're a liar. Matter of 00:41:01.49\00:41:04.40 fact, on his death bed the priest came by and they begged 00:41:04.43\00:41:07.27 Marco Polo to recant of his lies and tales that he had told and 00:41:07.31\00:41:12.25 the only way he responded, he said, recant? He said I haven't 00:41:12.29\00:41:17.45 told you the half of what I saw. And you know so often when you 00:41:17.48\00:41:22.61 hear stories things are exaggerated but every now and 00:41:22.64\00:41:25.74 then it's even bigger and better than what you've been 00:41:25.77\00:41:28.80 told. Anything I might tell you about Jesus the Son of David 00:41:28.84\00:41:33.90 or type of Solomon in his kingdom, I can't come anywhere 00:41:33.93\00:41:38.44 near explaining it to you. She said indeed the half of the 00:41:38.47\00:41:42.91 greatness of your wisdom was not told me. You exceed the fame of 00:41:42.95\00:41:46.58 which I heard. Happy, notice this. She said, happy, happy, 00:41:46.61\00:41:52.45 blessed. Happy are your men and happy are these your servants 00:41:52.48\00:41:57.53 who stand continually before you and hear your wisdom. Blessed be 00:41:57.56\00:42:02.58 the Lord your God who delighted in you in setting you on his 00:42:02.61\00:42:06.36 throne to be king for the Lord your God. She noticed that 00:42:06.39\00:42:10.20 Solomon was not the ultimate king. Solomon taught her that he 00:42:10.23\00:42:15.07 was a servant of the real King. Because your God has loved 00:42:15.11\00:42:19.32 Israel to establish them forever. Spiritual Israel does 00:42:19.35\00:42:23.49 last forever and you can be part of that. Therefore he made you 00:42:23.53\00:42:27.73 king over them, Jesus is king over that people forever, to do 00:42:27.77\00:42:33.04 justice and righteousness. This is an incredible declaration of 00:42:33.08\00:42:37.32 what she says about the goodness of God. Now I want to go back 00:42:37.36\00:42:40.41 here and I want you to notice something. Turn with me in your 00:42:40.44\00:42:43.86 Bibles to Deuteronomy 4 verse 5. I see I've got a couple moments 00:42:43.89\00:42:47.28 left. Deuteronomy chapter 4 verse 5. That's of course the 00:42:47.31\00:42:54.80 last in the books of Moses. What was the plan for God's people? 00:42:54.84\00:43:06.06 Moses is speaking. Surely I have taught you statutes and 00:43:06.09\00:43:09.48 judgments just as the Lord my God commanded me that you should 00:43:09.52\00:43:13.84 act according to them in the land that you go to possess. 00:43:13.87\00:43:16.63 Listen, verse 6. Therefore be careful to observe them, observe 00:43:16.67\00:43:21.47 my words, statutes and laws, for this is your wisdom, notice the 00:43:21.51\00:43:26.28 word wisdom, and your understanding in the sight of 00:43:26.31\00:43:29.44 the peoples who will hear. He's talking about all these nations 00:43:29.48\00:43:34.23 around you, these statutes and say surely this nation is a wise 00:43:34.26\00:43:39.21 and understanding people for what great nation is there that 00:43:39.24\00:43:43.41 has God so near. The temple was right there in Jerusalem with 00:43:43.45\00:43:47.97 the presence of God as the Lord our God is to us and whatever 00:43:48.00\00:43:51.47 reason we might call upon him he's right here to ask him. 00:43:51.51\00:43:54.71 Can you imagine any question you got Solomon's right there in 00:43:54.74\00:43:59.30 your kingdom. And what great nation is there that has such 00:43:59.33\00:44:03.49 statutes and righteous judgments as in all this law that I set 00:44:03.53\00:44:07.52 before you this day. You hear what Moses is saying. This is 00:44:07.55\00:44:11.68 the last message of Moses. He said my goal for you is you've 00:44:11.72\00:44:15.87 got the best truth of any nation you've got the truth around the 00:44:15.90\00:44:20.02 world. You are a nation of priests. You are to be a light 00:44:20.06\00:44:22.91 to the world. When people see your righteous judgments and 00:44:22.95\00:44:25.73 your statutes they're going to say there is no people that have 00:44:25.76\00:44:28.76 the truth like these people. By the way, you know virtually 00:44:28.79\00:44:31.71 every nation in the world, it's civil law is based on the law of 00:44:31.75\00:44:38.35 Moses. I mean what nation is there that doesn't at least go 00:44:38.38\00:44:42.26 by the last six commandments? Don't steal, don't lie, respect 00:44:42.29\00:44:45.20 for marriage, of course we're starting to lose some of that 00:44:45.24\00:44:48.08 here aren't we? Respect for your parental authority, not coveting 00:44:48.12\00:44:52.90 everybody's suing everybody. I mean, you know, you can see what 00:44:52.94\00:44:57.69 happens when that stuff implodes. But virtually every 00:44:57.73\00:45:00.11 nation in the world used the law of the Jews as the foundation 00:45:00.15\00:45:06.34 for social and civil and moral law. What nation of the world is 00:45:06.37\00:45:10.91 there that has such righteous laws. This is what the Queen of 00:45:10.94\00:45:15.45 Sheba did. Let me tell you what I'm trying to say before I'm 00:45:15.48\00:45:19.85 done with the sermon, the essence, the core. This story is 00:45:19.89\00:45:24.61 the peak example of what God's will was for his people. 00:45:24.64\00:45:29.29 He wanted to bless them. He said if you obey me, as they did 00:45:29.33\00:45:33.15 during this time of Solomon. Now part II of Solomon or rather 00:45:33.18\00:45:37.53 in the next message on Solomon, things take a turn. But at this 00:45:37.56\00:45:41.45 point they'd reached the actual peak and the evidence of that 00:45:41.48\00:45:45.99 zenith was the other nations were coming to find out about 00:45:46.03\00:45:50.14 their God. That was God's plan. He didn't want to keep it just 00:45:50.18\00:45:53.57 among the Israelites. He wanted it to disseminate all around 00:45:53.60\00:45:57.70 the world. And so she said, you're blessed, happy, happy, 00:45:57.74\00:46:01.21 blessed. That's what God wants for you when we obey his laws 00:46:01.25\00:46:06.13 and do his will. So as she departs she probably gave him 00:46:06.17\00:46:10.55 some spices and gifts along the way. Verse 10 of I Kings 10: 00:46:10.59\00:46:16.58 She gave the king 120 talents of gold. That by our standards is 00:46:16.61\00:46:22.57 nine million two hundred and sixteen thousand dollars of 00:46:22.61\00:46:27.45 gold. A very great store of spices and precious stones. 00:46:27.48\00:46:32.07 No spice came anymore for abundance that the king of Sheba 00:46:32.11\00:46:36.30 gave to Solomon. Whenever Israel looked at their history they 00:46:36.34\00:46:41.58 never saw more and better gold and spices and gems coming into 00:46:41.62\00:46:45.91 the treasury and into the nation as when the Queen of Sheba came. 00:46:45.95\00:46:50.21 Everybody got a little of that spice back then because there 00:46:50.24\00:46:53.34 was so much of it that she brought in her caravans. 00:46:53.37\00:46:56.64 She gives a gift. You know she's so thankful for all that God 00:46:56.68\00:47:00.34 has done for her she basically unloads everything and says 00:47:00.37\00:47:03.19 you know I just want to bless you. I want to give you a gift. 00:47:03.22\00:47:06.34 Thank you so much for answering my questions. I know your God is 00:47:06.38\00:47:10.04 the true God and she took the knowledge of Jehovah back to her 00:47:10.08\00:47:13.71 country to spread it everywhere and that was God's plan. 00:47:13.75\00:47:19.21 Something else you notice. She brought the best she had. Have 00:47:19.24\00:47:25.46 any of you had to buy a gift for someone difficult? Can you 00:47:25.50\00:47:30.94 imagine trying to buy a gift for Solomon. What you get him, an 00:47:30.98\00:47:35.48 electric razor. They don't have electricity. What do you get 00:47:35.51\00:47:40.13 King Solomon when he's got billions of dollars of money. 00:47:40.16\00:47:44.71 What do you think made Solomon the happiest? The money and the 00:47:44.74\00:47:49.14 gold and spices that she gave or the questions that she asked. 00:47:49.18\00:47:53.54 What did Solomon treasure the most? His riches or wisdom? 00:47:53.58\00:47:57.13 What did Solomon ask for when God said what do you want? 00:47:57.16\00:48:00.64 Wisdom. Seek first the kingdom of God. That's what she did. His 00:48:00.68\00:48:04.74 righteousness, his wisdom. I think Solomon was satisfied that 00:48:04.77\00:48:08.17 she had come looking for wisdom, looking for knowledge, looking 00:48:08.20\00:48:11.56 for truth. He gave her as much time as she wanted. Another 00:48:11.60\00:48:16.10 point I don't want to rush past. When she went to visit King 00:48:16.13\00:48:20.58 Solomon she did not go alone in her pursuit of truth. It says 00:48:20.62\00:48:24.83 she brought a very great company a very great retinue of others 00:48:24.87\00:48:29.17 with her and on your journey, on your pilgrimage through this 00:48:29.20\00:48:32.90 life looking for truth is this a journey we take one day, hop on 00:48:32.94\00:48:36.84 a plane, find out truth and come home? Or are we on a caravan 00:48:36.87\00:48:40.73 right now crossing the desert in this wilderness? 00:48:40.77\00:48:42.94 We're looking for truth every day. There is absolute truth but 00:48:42.98\00:48:46.73 it's progressive in the way we learn it and the more you walk 00:48:46.76\00:48:50.13 in the light the more God gives you. You walk in the truth he's 00:48:50.17\00:48:54.09 given you he'll give you more, amen? Bring others with you in 00:48:54.13\00:48:58.02 your search for truth. Then finally what I think is 00:48:58.05\00:49:02.23 beautiful. The story's not quite over yet. II Chronicles 9 verse 00:49:02.26\00:49:08.75 12. You'll have to go to Chronicles for this one. 00:49:08.78\00:49:11.10 II Chronicles 9 verse 12: Now King Solomon gave to the queen 00:49:11.14\00:49:16.34 Wait a second. I thought she was giving to the king. Now he's 00:49:16.38\00:49:21.15 given to her. Now King Solomon gave to the Queen of Sheba all 00:49:21.19\00:49:26.58 she desired whatever she asked, much more than she had brought 00:49:26.62\00:49:32.02 to the king. So she turned and went to her own country, she and 00:49:32.06\00:49:36.78 her servants. Wait a second. Whenever I hear about the story 00:49:36.81\00:49:41.12 of the Queen of Sheba I think that she's the one who's asking 00:49:41.16\00:49:45.43 for knowledge. She comes and she pays for her knowledge. 00:49:45.47\00:49:48.76 But before she heads back home she says boy you've got some 00:49:48.79\00:49:51.64 things in this country we just don't have out there in the 00:49:51.67\00:49:54.49 desert. We don't have cedar. Can we take some cedar trees 00:49:54.52\00:49:57.55 back with us. He said all that you want. He was a very 00:49:57.58\00:50:00.54 generous king. And she said you know there's some spices that we 00:50:00.57\00:50:02.81 brought, but you've got things here that we don't have and I 00:50:02.84\00:50:05.45 don't have. I don't know what she asked for. I bet you that 00:50:05.48\00:50:09.06 she said can we have copy of your law? I mean after this 00:50:09.10\00:50:12.61 whole trip do you think that she left without a copy of the Torah 00:50:12.64\00:50:15.28 I think she said I would like your sacred writings. Can we 00:50:15.31\00:50:19.49 take them back with us. And along with provisions for the 00:50:19.53\00:50:23.63 trip. They had a long way to go back home. But it said she left 00:50:23.67\00:50:27.07 with more than she brought. Did I make that up of is that what 00:50:27.10\00:50:30.47 it says? I'm showing you my notes. It's in the Bible too. 00:50:30.50\00:50:35.21 Does it mean she left with more money? It doesn't say money. 00:50:35.24\00:50:40.59 But she left with more. What does a woman represent in the 00:50:40.63\00:50:45.91 Bible analogy/prophecy. How many times have you heard me ask that 00:50:45.94\00:50:50.66 question? A woman is a type of the church. When we come to the 00:50:50.69\00:50:55.37 house of God we're seeking wisdom aren't we? And we bring 00:50:55.41\00:51:00.35 our gifts. But do we leave with more than we bring. That's the 00:51:00.38\00:51:06.06 way it ought to work. When you come to worship God and he gives 00:51:06.10\00:51:10.05 you of his Spirit and he gives you of his wisdom, you open the 00:51:10.09\00:51:13.62 Bible and read you're going to leave with more than you brought 00:51:13.66\00:51:17.35 You can't out give God. You know this is a principle that you 00:51:17.39\00:51:20.84 should never forget whatever the category. Whether it's talking 00:51:20.88\00:51:24.13 about spiritual truth or your time or your means. Whenever you 00:51:24.17\00:51:28.69 give anything to others or God. Jesus said it's more blessed to 00:51:28.72\00:51:32.56 give than receive. She came and she unloaded her caravan in 00:51:32.60\00:51:36.40 Solomon's kingdom. She stored her treasure in the old 00:51:36.43\00:51:40.36 Jerusalem, right? When she left she said blessed, blessed, happy 00:51:40.39\00:51:46.62 She was enriched, she was satisfied. She left with more 00:51:46.65\00:51:49.43 than she brought. You and I are to store our treasures in the 00:51:49.47\00:51:53.20 New Jerusalem. We bring them before our King Solomon. We'll 00:51:53.23\00:51:57.69 end up receiving more than we give. She went home. She came 00:51:57.72\00:52:01.41 kind of bewildered pondering all these questions, perplexed, a 00:52:01.45\00:52:05.10 little anxious. She left breathless, overflowing. 00:52:05.14\00:52:09.18 She had enough memories to last her a lifetime. She took the 00:52:09.22\00:52:12.25 knowledge of the true God back down to the straits there of 00:52:12.28\00:52:16.14 the Arabian Sea and the Red Sea and everybody that came by she 00:52:16.18\00:52:19.60 would talk about the true God Jehovah. She wasn't confused 00:52:19.63\00:52:23.02 about what the truth was anymore. She became an 00:52:23.05\00:52:26.35 ambassador for the God of heaven because of the witness of 00:52:26.38\00:52:30.00 Solomon. Now that's God's plan for his church. When people come 00:52:30.03\00:52:34.62 into our church do they say what the Queen of Sheba said when 00:52:34.66\00:52:39.19 they behold our apparel, the righteous robes of Christ, our 00:52:39.23\00:52:42.86 food, the bread of life? When they come to our church and they 00:52:42.89\00:52:46.20 behold the setting, the order, of his servants and the way 00:52:46.24\00:52:49.48 things are done. They say surely God is in this place. Wouldn't 00:52:49.52\00:52:53.08 you like to have a visitor come to our church and say what the 00:52:53.11\00:52:56.64 Queen of Sheba said? Have a breathtaking experience when 00:52:56.67\00:53:00.74 they come to the house of God. Amen? And she saw their offering 00:53:00.77\00:53:04.47 before the Lord, the sacrifice of them self and their praise. 00:53:04.50\00:53:08.87 That I believe is God's plan for his church. Final question: 00:53:08.91\00:53:13.71 She prepared a long time for that journey to go to Jerusalem 00:53:13.75\00:53:18.51 to meet the son of David. Probably spent months 00:53:18.55\00:53:20.58 preparing for that journey. She packed, she loaded, she thought 00:53:20.62\00:53:25.16 about what it would mean to make that journey. Are you preparing 00:53:25.20\00:53:29.71 for a journey to the New Jerusalem now? I'm hoping that 00:53:29.75\00:53:33.57 you'll be able to put yourself in the place of this noble queen 00:53:33.61\00:53:38.04 and say like that woman, I want to be part of God's people that 00:53:38.07\00:53:42.24 prepare for this trip to the New Jerusalem and are willing to 00:53:42.28\00:53:46.88 invest everything to know what is and to live by what is truth? 00:53:46.91\00:53:51.48 Jesus the Son of David is the truth that will set us free. 00:53:51.51\00:53:54.97 Can you say Amen friends. I thought it would be good for us 00:53:55.00\00:53:58.77 to close our service by singing an anthem. You'll find it in 00:53:58.80\00:54:02.66 your song books as number six and we're going to sing praises 00:54:02.69\00:54:06.03 to God. Now I will excuse myself from the platform because I'm 00:54:06.07\00:54:09.13 going to prepare for a baptism. And if your able to stay by 00:54:09.17\00:54:12.33 we'll be having a special baptism for a young lady in just 00:54:12.37\00:54:15.29 a moment. O Worship the Lord. Let's stand together as we sing. 00:54:15.32\00:54:18.21 ¤ ¤ 00:54:18.24\00:54:26.11 O worship the Lord In the beauty of holiness. 00:54:26.15\00:54:35.06 Bow down before Him, His glory proclaim; 00:54:35.10\00:54:41.80 With Gold of obedience and incense of lowliness 00:54:41.83\00:54:49.76 Kneel and adore Him; the Lord is His name. 00:54:49.80\00:54:57.15 Low at His feet lay thy burden of carefulness; 00:54:57.18\00:55:04.34 High on His heart He will bear it for thee, 00:55:04.38\00:55:11.47 Comfort thy sorrows and answer thy prayerfulness, 00:55:11.50\00:55:18.58 Guiding thy steps as may best for thee be. 00:55:18.61\00:55:26.42 Fear not to enter His courts in the slenderness 00:55:26.46\00:55:33.87 Of the poor wealth thou wouldst reckon as thine. 00:55:33.91\00:55:41.53 Truth in its beauty and love in its tenderness, 00:55:41.57\00:55:49.42 These are the offerings to lay at His shrine. 00:55:49.46\00:55:57.24 These, though we bring them in trembling and fearfulness, 00:55:57.28\00:56:04.41 He will accept for the name that is dear; 00:56:04.44\00:56:11.37 Mornings of joy give for evenings of tearfulness, 00:56:11.41\00:56:20.83 Trust for our trembling, and hope for our fear. 00:56:20.87\00:56:29.80 Please be seated. Just before we have the baptism 00:56:29.83\00:56:38.69 let's just bow our heads and we'll pray and thank the Good 00:56:38.73\00:56:42.38 Lord for the sermon we heard this morning. 00:56:42.42\00:56:45.40 Gracious Father in heaven, we want to think you so much for 00:56:45.44\00:56:49.18 the story of Solomon. We appreciate the way Pastor Doug 00:56:49.21\00:56:53.69 has taken us through this history of this man's life and 00:56:53.72\00:56:57.66 we pray that the things that we've heard this morning and 00:56:57.69\00:57:01.55 the lessons that we have learned the spiritual lessons that we 00:57:01.59\00:57:05.63 can apply to our own lives. And as the Queen of Sheba was 00:57:05.67\00:57:09.76 was willing to go many, many miles to hear the wisdom that 00:57:09.80\00:57:14.28 you had given Solomon, may we be willing to go, as it were, to 00:57:14.32\00:57:18.70 the ends of this earth that we might find that same wisdom, the 00:57:18.73\00:57:23.08 of salvation through Jesus Christ.
