It's been 2,000 years since the glorious light of the cross 00:00:09.38\00:00:12.56 illuminated a world veiled in darkness and confusion 00:00:12.59\00:00:15.43 about the character of God... 00:00:15.46\00:00:17.31 And still today, the greatest need of mankind is a 00:00:17.34\00:00:20.13 revelation of God's love as revealed in the life of Christ. 00:00:20.16\00:00:23.87 Amazing Facts presents "The Everlasting Gospel" 00:00:23.90\00:00:27.04 with Pastor Doug Batchelor, 00:00:27.07\00:00:28.93 coming to you each week from Sacramento Central Church 00:00:28.96\00:00:31.52 in sunny California. 00:00:31.55\00:00:33.18 Discover hidden treasures in God's Word today. 00:00:33.21\00:00:38.82 I want to begin by telling you a little story. 00:00:38.85\00:00:43.66 More than 30 years ago, when I was a baby Christian, 00:00:43.69\00:00:47.38 I was hitchhiking in southern California; 00:00:47.41\00:00:50.78 I don't even remember where I was going, 00:00:50.81\00:00:52.35 but I do remember I was picked up by a matronly lady, 00:00:52.78\00:00:56.66 very nice, and she quickly shared with me that 00:00:56.69\00:01:01.49 she was a Christian and before she dropped me off 00:01:01.52\00:01:04.54 at the next on-ramp where I was going, 00:01:04.57\00:01:06.33 she said, "My house is not far from here, 00:01:06.36\00:01:07.99 can I get you some lunch," I thought that would be 00:01:08.02\00:01:09.62 very nice... took me to her home, 00:01:09.65\00:01:12.02 fed me a nice sandwich or something, 00:01:12.05\00:01:13.92 and she said, "Now I need to ask you... 00:01:13.95\00:01:16.47 Have you received the Holy Spirit?" 00:01:16.50\00:01:20.92 And I said, "No one had ever asked me that before 00:01:20.95\00:01:24.74 because I just was a new Christian, 00:01:24.77\00:01:26.36 I had accepted Jesus up in the cave," and I said, 00:01:26.39\00:01:30.77 "Well, I believe I have because the Lord has been giving me 00:01:30.80\00:01:34.28 victory over my bad language and drugs and these 00:01:34.31\00:01:38.35 different things," and she said, "No, no, no, 00:01:38.38\00:01:40.66 I'm not talking about that." 00:01:40.69\00:01:42.49 She said, "I want to know... have you received the 00:01:42.52\00:01:44.38 baptism of the Holy Spirit; do you speak in tongues?" 00:01:44.41\00:01:47.99 And I said, "No." 00:01:48.02\00:01:49.90 She said, "Well then you haven't received the baptism 00:01:49.93\00:01:51.52 of the Holy Spirit." 00:01:51.55\00:01:53.22 And she launched into a Bible study that, to me, 00:01:53.25\00:01:55.64 seemed a little bit out of balance 00:01:55.67\00:01:59.36 with what I was reading in the Bible. 00:01:59.39\00:02:02.01 And it wasn't long after that, I began to worship; 00:02:02.04\00:02:05.31 I was not part of this church. 00:02:05.34\00:02:07.67 I began to worship with a variety of different churches, 00:02:07.70\00:02:10.92 mostly charismatic churches in Southern California 00:02:10.95\00:02:14.55 in Palm Springs that practiced the speaking of tongues, 00:02:14.58\00:02:18.33 the way it is done in about 50% of the churches in North America 00:02:18.36\00:02:22.15 with these ecstatic utterances... 00:02:22.18\00:02:24.72 And I just did not have peace, even though I had a lot of 00:02:24.76\00:02:28.57 friends there, lovely people, that it was what I was finding 00:02:28.60\00:02:33.14 when I read the Bible. 00:02:33.17\00:02:34.97 And so, I really delved into a study on this subject, 00:02:35.00\00:02:39.95 and was very surprised by what I learned. 00:02:39.98\00:02:42.93 Now, this is something, I think we need to address because 00:02:42.96\00:02:47.81 it is permeating Christianity. 00:02:47.84\00:02:50.83 A misunderstanding of this doctrine is not only 00:02:50.86\00:02:54.09 influencing the one subject of the one gift of the Spirit, 00:02:54.12\00:02:58.03 dealing with tongues, but a lot that it also involves 00:02:58.06\00:03:02.17 is coming into many of the mainline protestant churches. 00:03:02.20\00:03:06.17 Now before we go to our study, I want you to put on your 00:03:06.20\00:03:09.87 seatbelt... the message today is dealing with 00:03:09.90\00:03:12.37 "Understanding Tongues" 00:03:12.40\00:03:15.72 This is becoming very common and pervasive in 00:03:15.75\00:03:20.10 not only protestant but charismatic churches 00:03:20.13\00:03:23.03 across North America. 00:03:23.06\00:03:25.33 The message today dealing with the subject of 00:03:25.36\00:03:27.24 understanding tongues, I thought it was important 00:03:27.27\00:03:29.45 to share with you because elements of these things 00:03:29.48\00:03:33.12 are spreading - they're becoming more accepted, 00:03:33.15\00:03:36.27 and they're even coming into our church... 00:03:36.30\00:03:39.24 And I think we need to understand the spirit 00:03:39.27\00:03:41.70 behind what's going on here. 00:03:41.73\00:03:44.79 Let me read something to you... 00:03:44.82\00:03:46.18 This is from the book, Second - "Selected Messages," 00:03:46.21\00:03:49.24 if you want to write that down. 00:03:49.27\00:03:50.56 Second - "Selected Messages," page 35, 36, 38... 00:03:50.59\00:03:55.07 "The Lord desires to have in His service, 00:03:55.10\00:03:58.70 order and discipline, not excitement and confusion. 00:03:58.73\00:04:03.29 The Lord has shown me what would take place 00:04:03.32\00:04:05.87 just before the close of probation. 00:04:05.90\00:04:09.07 Every uncouth thing will be demonstrated. 00:04:09.10\00:04:12.63 There will be, she's speaking about in the context 00:04:12.66\00:04:14.63 of a church service... there will be shouting 00:04:14.66\00:04:17.17 with drums, music, dancing. 00:04:17.20\00:04:20.17 The senses of rational beings will become so confused 00:04:20.20\00:04:23.95 they cannot be trusted to make right decisions. 00:04:23.98\00:04:26.56 A bedlam of noise shocks the senses and perverts that 00:04:26.59\00:04:31.12 which if conducted aright, might be a blessing. 00:04:31.15\00:04:34.50 The powers of satanic agencies blend with the din of noise 00:04:34.53\00:04:38.84 to have a carnival and this is termed - 00:04:38.87\00:04:41.34 the Holy Spirit's working. 00:04:41.37\00:04:43.67 Those things which have been in the past, 00:04:43.70\00:04:46.01 will be in the future. 00:04:46.04\00:04:47.45 Satan will make music a snare by the way 00:04:47.48\00:04:50.94 in which it is conducted." 00:04:50.97\00:04:53.11 And so, here it is saying that just before 00:04:53.14\00:04:56.17 the close of probation, which precedes the second coming, 00:04:56.20\00:04:59.01 these things are going to be reintroduced 00:04:59.04\00:05:00.70 and this was a message written to God's people to God's Church. 00:05:00.73\00:05:03.67 Well friends, that day is coming but it's not done, 00:05:03.70\00:05:06.86 it's going to get worse, I think; 00:05:06.89\00:05:08.55 these things are happening. 00:05:08.58\00:05:10.84 Some of you know about the cuckoo bird... 00:05:10.87\00:05:14.21 We've all heard about the cuckoo bird and cuckoo clocks... 00:05:14.24\00:05:18.12 But the cuckoo bird is known as a brood parasite. 00:05:18.15\00:05:21.85 See what they do is - they don't incubate their own eggs. 00:05:21.88\00:05:25.11 What the cuckoo bird will do, 00:05:25.14\00:05:27.17 and it's sort of tragic in nature... 00:05:27.20\00:05:28.78 It will go and lay its egg in the nest of another bird 00:05:28.81\00:05:32.60 like a reed-warbler or something and they even somehow 00:05:32.63\00:05:36.45 manage to counterfeit the look of their egg, 00:05:36.48\00:05:38.82 but you can see the cuckoo bird's egg is much bigger. 00:05:38.85\00:05:41.79 But then it's one of the great tragedies of nature... 00:05:41.82\00:05:44.00 When that cuckoo bird hatches out, 00:05:44.03\00:05:46.20 often before the other birds, it begins to push the other 00:05:46.23\00:05:49.74 eggs out of the nest, or even worse still, 00:05:49.77\00:05:51.70 it hatches out and it basically eats all the food 00:05:51.73\00:05:55.16 because it's so much bigger, and here I think, 00:05:55.19\00:05:56.51 you've got another picture... 00:05:56.54\00:05:57.67 Here you've got a pasture bird working itself to death 00:05:57.70\00:06:03.12 trying to feed this robust little cuckoo chick 00:06:03.15\00:06:08.99 that has starved the other chicks out of the nest, 00:06:09.02\00:06:11.27 and this poor mother doesn't even realize it's not her egg; 00:06:11.30\00:06:14.55 it's not her chick. 00:06:14.58\00:06:15.62 It's been introduced - it's called a "brood parasite." 00:06:15.65\00:06:18.62 Counterfeit brought in, becomes a big distraction, 00:06:18.65\00:06:21.54 and the next thing you know, the other birds are crowded out 00:06:21.57\00:06:24.63 while this one bird is stuffed! 00:06:24.66\00:06:28.29 The devil has laid an egg in the church that is being 00:06:28.32\00:06:33.29 fed and nourished and it's displacing the other 00:06:33.32\00:06:35.46 gifts of the Spirit, it becomes a big distraction... 00:06:35.49\00:06:37.88 And it becomes a counterfeit for the real Holy Spirit. 00:06:37.91\00:06:41.90 Now I need to be very gentle... 00:06:41.93\00:06:43.86 The greatest part of Christ's true followers 00:06:43.89\00:06:47.52 are in the fellowship of other churches. 00:06:47.55\00:06:50.47 I do not believe the greatest part of Christ's true followers 00:06:50.50\00:06:53.88 happen to be in my denomination. 00:06:53.91\00:06:56.24 I believe that God has true followers in many different 00:06:56.27\00:06:59.07 persuasions, but His sheep are being called out of Babylon. 00:06:59.10\00:07:03.87 And by the way, do you know where Babylon gets its name? 00:07:03.90\00:07:09.12 Babylon gets its name because man wanted to kind of 00:07:09.15\00:07:14.81 make a monument to himself; it became worship 00:07:14.84\00:07:18.81 of its own entity and God confused the languages, 00:07:18.84\00:07:23.26 and that's where you get the word "Babelean" 00:07:23.29\00:07:25.39 in Babylon and one of the primary characteristics of 00:07:25.42\00:07:29.19 Babylon is a confusion of tongues - did you hear that? 00:07:29.22\00:07:32.85 I mean, if you can know anything about prophecy, 00:07:32.88\00:07:35.83 one of the things in Babylon is this confusion of tongues. 00:07:35.86\00:07:39.52 And so, I may say more about that later. 00:07:39.55\00:07:42.37 Before I talk about some of the confused gifts of the Spirit, 00:07:42.40\00:07:45.71 I want to explain what the true is... 00:07:45.74\00:07:48.18 God does give His people and His church gifts of the Spirit 00:07:48.21\00:07:51.73 for the purpose of sharing the gospel. 00:07:51.76\00:07:53.81 For instance, read in Ephesians 4:8... 00:07:53.84\00:07:56.41 "Therefore He says, when He ascended on high, 00:07:56.44\00:08:00.48 He led captivity captive and gave gifts unto men." 00:08:00.51\00:08:05.22 When we are married to Christ, through baptism, 00:08:05.25\00:08:07.96 we get a wedding gift... that's the Holy Spirit. 00:08:07.99\00:08:10.63 Repent and be baptized and you shall receive 00:08:10.66\00:08:12.88 the gift of the Holy Spirit. 00:08:12.98\00:08:14.64 That gift manifests itself different ways. 00:08:14.67\00:08:18.05 There are a number of gifts of the Spirit... 00:08:18.08\00:08:19.60 For instance, 1 Corinthians 12:7... 00:08:19.63\00:08:21.64 "But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to 00:08:21.67\00:08:25.29 each one for the profit of all." 00:08:25.32\00:08:26.87 God gives everybody who becomes His child, 00:08:26.91\00:08:30.84 various gifts of the Spirit for the purpose of 00:08:30.87\00:08:33.69 ministering for Christ, that Christ might 00:08:33.72\00:08:35.98 operate through you. 00:08:36.01\00:08:37.65 And it goes on to say here, "For to one is given 00:08:37.68\00:08:40.91 the word of wisdom through the Spirit; 00:08:40.94\00:08:42.73 to another, the word of knowledge 00:08:42.76\00:08:44.05 through the same Spirit; 00:08:44.08\00:08:45.30 to another, faith by the same Spirit; 00:08:45.33\00:08:47.31 to another, gifts of healing by the Spirit; 00:08:47.34\00:08:49.83 to another, working of miracles; 00:08:49.86\00:08:51.54 to another, prophecy; 00:08:51.57\00:08:52.95 to another, discerning of Spirits; 00:08:52.98\00:08:54.89 to another, different kinds of tongues; 00:08:54.92\00:08:57.86 to another, the interpretation of tongues." 00:08:57.89\00:09:01.18 "Tongues" is one of the gifts of the Spirit, 00:09:01.21\00:09:05.09 but it is not the only gift. 00:09:05.12\00:09:08.01 The gift of tongues represents a language. 00:09:08.04\00:09:13.81 Now, if we're going to understand what the genuine 00:09:13.84\00:09:16.95 gift of tongues is, it's probably a good idea for us 00:09:16.98\00:09:19.76 to read what Jesus says here in Matthew 28... 00:09:19.79\00:09:25.37 "The Lord told the disciples, go ye and teach all nations... 00:09:25.40\00:09:30.05 go to all nations baptizing them in the 00:09:30.08\00:09:36.46 name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit." 00:09:36.49\00:09:38.69 In order for them to fulfill the great commission, 00:09:38.72\00:09:41.82 and go to all the world, they would need some kind of 00:09:41.85\00:09:43.70 an additional gift because of the 12 apostles, 00:09:43.73\00:09:46.78 how many of them were Jewish? 00:09:46.81\00:09:48.80 100%... What did they speak? 00:09:48.83\00:09:53.55 Hebrew, Aramaic, they probably understood 00:09:53.58\00:09:55.76 some Latin because they did have the Romans occupying them. 00:09:55.79\00:09:58.76 Maybe a little bit of Greek because the Greeks 00:09:58.79\00:10:00.97 had occupied a few years earlier. 00:10:01.00\00:10:02.71 Here in California, we typically speak English, 00:10:02.75\00:10:06.53 but if you're smart, you're going to be learning Spanish. 00:10:06.56\00:10:09.91 Right? So I mean, you know, you have different cultures 00:10:09.94\00:10:12.86 that have different influences, but if you're in Sacramento, 00:10:12.89\00:10:15.35 it's a good idea to understand a little bit of Russian. 00:10:15.38\00:10:17.92 How many of you know that? 00:10:17.95\00:10:19.80 Big Russian community here! 00:10:19.83\00:10:21.18 Well they did have some words and phrases they understood, 00:10:21.21\00:10:24.61 but they principally spoke Aramaic. 00:10:24.64\00:10:27.46 Now Jesus said, "Go teach the whole world." 00:10:27.49\00:10:29.55 How is He going to get these bright, but mostly 00:10:29.58\00:10:31.78 uneducated men to preach the gospel in all the world? 00:10:31.81\00:10:35.38 Mark 16:17- tells us what He would do. 00:10:35.41\00:10:42.12 Mark 16:17- "These signs shall follow those that believe. 00:10:42.15\00:10:46.61 In My name, they'll cast out demons; they will 00:10:46.64\00:10:49.29 speak with new tongues" Now notice something here... 00:10:49.32\00:10:52.67 Jesus said it would be a sign, a supernatural sign. 00:10:52.70\00:10:56.02 Now, some of you here... how many, I just want to see... 00:10:56.05\00:10:58.23 How many of you are bilingual? You speak more than one language 00:10:58.26\00:11:01.69 Some of you speak Spanish, some Russian, some Romanian, 00:11:01.72\00:11:04.42 some Filipino or one of the many dialects, 00:11:04.45\00:11:07.17 I should say of the Philippines. 00:11:07.20\00:11:08.69 There are a lot of different... we got an international 00:11:08.72\00:11:10.69 cosmopolitan church here. 00:11:10.72\00:11:11.91 We got some people who speak Fujian, 00:11:11.94\00:11:13.35 some who speak Samoan, some of you speak 00:11:13.38\00:11:16.58 3 or more languages. 00:11:16.61\00:11:19.23 That's not really what Jesus is talking about. 00:11:19.26\00:11:21.50 He compares this gift of tongues with casting out devils 00:11:21.53\00:11:26.17 and taking up serpents. 00:11:26.20\00:11:27.93 It is a supernatural ability to speak tongues 00:11:27.96\00:11:31.27 for the purpose of spreading the gospel. 00:11:31.30\00:11:33.41 Now, if you're wondering what the gift of tongues is... 00:11:33.44\00:11:35.80 the best examples are given in the Book of Acts. 00:11:35.83\00:11:38.55 You look at the story at Pentecost - turn with me to 00:11:38.58\00:11:41.98 Acts 2- this was our Scripture reading this morning. 00:11:42.01\00:11:46.40 There are 3.. how many? Three examples of speaking 00:11:46.43\00:11:51.17 in tongues in the Bible, not 4. 00:11:51.20\00:11:53.91 There are only 3 examples of this happening. 00:11:53.94\00:11:57.63 Some people think every time you're filled 00:11:57.66\00:11:59.24 with the Holy Spirit, you speak with tongues. 00:11:59.27\00:12:01.17 The Bible does not teach that. 00:12:01.20\00:12:03.01 There are 18 times in just the New Testament, how many times? 00:12:03.04\00:12:07.53 ... 18 times in the New Testament when people 00:12:07.56\00:12:10.35 were filled with the Holy Spirit. 00:12:10.38\00:12:11.69 Only 3 out of those 18 wasn't connected with tongues. 00:12:11.72\00:12:15.76 The other times, they were simply preaching the Word, 00:12:15.79\00:12:18.55 and I'll give you some examples of that a little further on. 00:12:18.58\00:12:22.96 Acts 2:1- "When the Day of Pentecost has fully come, 00:12:22.99\00:12:28.62 they were all in one accord in one place." All right 00:12:28.65\00:12:32.06 The Day of Pentecost was a holiday that took place 00:12:32.09\00:12:37.49 50 days... "penta" means 5. 00:12:37.52\00:12:40.06 We got a "pentagon," its a building with 5 sides. 00:12:40.09\00:12:43.27 Pentagram - it's got 5 sides to it, right? 00:12:43.30\00:12:46.37 Or the pentagon does, pentagram is something different 00:12:46.40\00:12:48.53 It's a 5-sided star. 00:12:48.56\00:12:50.57 So, it represents 5; 50 days after Passover was 00:12:50.60\00:12:54.50 a Jewish holiday called Pentecost. 00:12:54.53\00:12:57.09 There were 3 primary feasts where if you were a dedicated 00:12:57.12\00:12:59.76 Jew and you could make it, you would travel 00:12:59.79\00:13:01.98 over land and sea to get to Jerusalem for those feasts. 00:13:02.01\00:13:05.79 The most desirable feast to go to was the Feast of Pentecost 00:13:05.82\00:13:09.25 because the weather was perfect for traveling; 00:13:09.28\00:13:12.13 there was already some food beginning to 00:13:12.16\00:13:14.10 appear in the fields and so Jewish boys from the age of 00:13:14.13\00:13:18.37 12 up to 90, if they could make it, if they could afford it, 00:13:18.40\00:13:22.36 would come from all over the Roman Empire to Jerusalem 00:13:22.39\00:13:25.63 for Pentecost. 00:13:25.66\00:13:27.12 Now this is only a short time after the outpouring 00:13:27.15\00:13:30.72 of the Holy Spirit... or after the ascension of Jesus. 00:13:30.75\00:13:35.34 Jesus did not tell the disciples at first 00:13:35.37\00:13:38.56 to go to the world at large. 00:13:38.59\00:13:41.59 He said, "You'll receive the Holy Spirit and I want 00:13:41.62\00:13:43.63 you to start preaching in Jerusalem, and Judaea, 00:13:43.66\00:13:47.24 those are Jewish; then Samaria, 00:13:47.27\00:13:49.46 then the other most parts of the earth... 00:13:49.49\00:13:51.53 But they were to begin not going to the Gentiles, 00:13:51.56\00:13:55.78 but going first to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 00:13:55.81\00:13:58.92 They were not commanded to go to the Gentiles 00:13:58.95\00:14:01.36 until the stoning of Stephen and the supreme court 00:14:01.39\00:14:04.26 of the Jewish nation plugged their ears and rejected 00:14:04.29\00:14:07.44 that wonderful presentation of the gospel. 00:14:07.47\00:14:10.78 So... during Pentecost, Jews came from all over the 00:14:10.81\00:14:14.32 Roman Empire, but they didn't all speak Jewish, listen... 00:14:14.35\00:14:17.14 "Now suddenly there came from heaven the sound of a 00:14:17.17\00:14:21.30 rushing mighty wind and it filled the house where they 00:14:21.33\00:14:24.57 were all sitting; then there appeared unto them 00:14:24.60\00:14:27.10 divided tongues, cloven tongues of fire and it sat on each one 00:14:27.13\00:14:31.74 of them and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, 00:14:31.77\00:14:34.84 and they began to speak with other tongues... 00:14:34.87\00:14:37.16 What does the word "tongues" mean? Languages 00:14:37.19\00:14:40.11 ... as the Spirit gave them utterance." 00:14:40.14\00:14:42.30 In other words, the Holy Spirit would inspire 00:14:42.33\00:14:45.41 different ones to speak different tongues 00:14:45.44\00:14:48.91 and share a message about Jesus and the gospel. 00:14:48.94\00:14:52.87 Now they were dwelling, they were abiding or camping 00:14:52.90\00:14:56.45 in Jerusalem, Jews... Who? 00:14:56.48\00:15:00.10 They weren't going to the Gentiles yet. 00:15:00.13\00:15:02.04 ...devout men out of... These were the Jews 00:15:02.07\00:15:06.06 devoted enough to come to the annual feast. 00:15:06.09\00:15:09.71 ...devout men out of every nation under heaven. 00:15:09.74\00:15:13.49 Jews had been dispersed all over the world, 00:15:13.52\00:15:16.57 not only because of the Romans, but because of the Greeks! 00:15:16.60\00:15:19.57 They were merchants and they were entrepreneurs, 00:15:19.60\00:15:23.04 and travelers and they were all over the Roman Empire. 00:15:23.07\00:15:25.45 My mother was Jewish; she didn't speak Jewish, 00:15:25.48\00:15:28.65 she spoke American. 00:15:28.68\00:15:30.20 And my grandparents, they were in New York, 00:15:30.23\00:15:34.34 but their Jewish families, they spoke Yiddish 00:15:34.37\00:15:36.94 which was sort of a corruption of German, Russian and Polish. 00:15:36.97\00:15:42.84 And, going back then, my great grandfather, he spoke Russian. 00:15:42.87\00:15:47.27 He was Jewish, didn't speak Hebrew. 00:15:47.30\00:15:50.55 The Jews all over the world today speak the language 00:15:50.58\00:15:52.95 of the country in where they live. 00:15:52.98\00:15:55.26 And so, you can say you're Jewish which is a nationality 00:15:55.29\00:15:58.73 but it's also a religion and you may not 00:15:58.76\00:16:01.22 even speak your native tongue. 00:16:01.25\00:16:04.12 So, God is getting ready to do something brilliant here... 00:16:04.15\00:16:08.82 There were devout Jews dwelling in Jerusalem; 00:16:08.85\00:16:12.59 they were there for the Feast of Pentecost, 00:16:12.62\00:16:14.34 from every nation under heaven and when the sound 00:16:14.37\00:16:17.46 occurred, the multitude came together... 00:16:17.49\00:16:19.60 They heard the mighty rushing wind and all the crowd 00:16:19.63\00:16:21.63 came near the upper room and there must have been 00:16:21.66\00:16:23.40 a courtyard present and they were confused because 00:16:23.43\00:16:27.10 everyone heard them... the disciples, 00:16:27.13\00:16:29.59 speak in his own language. 00:16:29.62\00:16:33.24 "They were all amazed and they marveled, 00:16:33.27\00:16:35.19 and they said to one another, "Look, are not all these 00:16:35.22\00:16:37.63 who speak Galileans?" 00:16:37.66\00:16:39.74 That means they spoke the language of the Galileans 00:16:39.77\00:16:42.14 which was Aramaic. 00:16:42.17\00:16:44.42 "How is it that we hear each man our own language 00:16:44.45\00:16:48.83 in which we were born?" 00:16:48.86\00:16:50.63 "Parthians and Medes and Elamites and those dwelling 00:16:50.66\00:16:53.75 in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 00:16:53.78\00:16:57.11 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt, and the parts of Libya 00:16:57.14\00:17:00.31 adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 00:17:00.34\00:17:04.47 ...These are converts to Judaism who weren't even Jewish 00:17:04.50\00:17:07.10 by blood, the proselytes. 00:17:07.13\00:17:08.79 ...Cretians and Arabians. Listen, we hear them 00:17:08.82\00:17:12.45 babbling incoherently ecstatic utterances. 00:17:12.48\00:17:16.21 We hear them uttering all kinds of gibberish, 00:17:16.24\00:17:18.40 we don't know what they're saying... 00:17:18.43\00:17:19.61 That's not what they said. 00:17:19.64\00:17:21.59 "We hear them speaking in our languages, our tongues 00:17:21.62\00:17:25.73 the wonderful works of God." 00:17:25.76\00:17:27.64 Did they know what they were saying? 00:17:27.67\00:17:29.75 They were speaking real languages of the world 00:17:29.78\00:17:32.34 for the purpose of preaching the gospel. 00:17:32.37\00:17:34.13 Now, you think about this... 00:17:34.16\00:17:35.64 this was really a brilliant thing for the Lord to do. 00:17:35.67\00:17:38.75 What is the fastest way to disperse the gospel 00:17:38.78\00:17:41.66 around the Roman Empire? 00:17:41.69\00:17:43.75 The Romans had built the roads and the best way 00:17:43.78\00:17:45.57 those roads were used was for the gospel... 00:17:45.60\00:17:48.07 You've got these devout Jews who would come to worship, 00:17:48.10\00:17:50.49 not just any Jews, the devout ones. 00:17:50.52\00:17:52.75 They're ready to accept Jesus; they're looking for the Messiah. 00:17:52.78\00:17:55.94 They've got a sense of expectation; 00:17:55.97\00:17:57.40 they've come to worship. 00:17:57.43\00:17:59.69 The Holy Spirit is poured out. 00:17:59.72\00:18:01.58 They hear the roaring, the rushing; 00:18:01.61\00:18:03.32 they hear this commotion and they come to this courtyard 00:18:03.35\00:18:05.60 by this upper room and the disciples come out on the roof, 00:18:05.63\00:18:08.41 and they begin to preach. 00:18:08.44\00:18:10.36 And they gather together in groups and they begin to 00:18:10.39\00:18:12.35 speak to the different groups that are assembled 00:18:12.38\00:18:14.42 in the tongues that they understood. 00:18:14.45\00:18:16.92 You see, when man rebelled against God, 00:18:16.95\00:18:18.97 He cursed their tongues and it became confusion and babbling 00:18:19.00\00:18:22.76 When the Holy Spirit was poured out, 00:18:22.79\00:18:24.33 it reversed the confusion, now there's comprehension; 00:18:24.36\00:18:28.44 they understand the story of Jesus being the Messiah; 00:18:28.47\00:18:31.46 thousands were converted during that week, 3,000, 00:18:31.49\00:18:34.61 then 5,000 a few days later. 00:18:34.64\00:18:36.28 They then go away from the feast, they fan out 00:18:36.31\00:18:39.37 across the Roman Empire; they take back to their 00:18:39.40\00:18:42.24 respective countries, the truth that the Messiah had come, 00:18:42.27\00:18:45.88 His name was Jesus... so the Jews were the first 00:18:45.91\00:18:48.37 ones to spread the gospel around the world 00:18:48.40\00:18:51.27 because they heard it in their own tongue. 00:18:51.30\00:18:53.60 The Lord had to do something miraculous to give them 00:18:53.63\00:18:56.01 that ability to be able to preach the 00:18:56.04\00:18:58.21 gospel everywhere, right? 00:18:58.24\00:19:00.01 That's the gift of tongues! 00:19:00.04\00:19:02.39 What you're seeing in millions of churches around the world 00:19:02.42\00:19:09.06 masquerading as the gift of tongues is really rank paganism 00:19:09.09\00:19:13.26 that has found its way in to the church, 00:19:13.29\00:19:15.77 it has caused confusion. 00:19:15.80\00:19:17.59 And again, I want to emphasize, good people, dear people, 00:19:17.62\00:19:20.19 some of them are here today. 00:19:20.22\00:19:21.64 I know some are listening that have come out of these churches 00:19:21.67\00:19:25.15 like myself, that are being confused by this. 00:19:25.18\00:19:30.09 So is it clear, as you read Acts 2, what the gift of 00:19:30.12\00:19:33.46 tongues was... Jesus said, I want you to tell 00:19:33.49\00:19:35.69 the whole world - you don't speak the languages... 00:19:35.72\00:19:39.02 In one generation, the gospel went to the then civilized world 00:19:39.05\00:19:41.95 the greatest jumpstart of the gospel was when God 00:19:41.98\00:19:44.44 poured out the Spirit. 00:19:44.47\00:19:45.51 He gave them the supernatural ability to speak in languages 00:19:45.54\00:19:48.75 they did not formerly know. 00:19:48.78\00:19:50.58 There were 12 apostles plus 120 total in 00:19:50.61\00:19:53.30 the upper room... they spoke. 00:19:53.34\00:19:55.38 There are 16 different language groups mentioned 00:19:55.42\00:19:57.56 just in chapter 2; 00:19:57.59\00:19:58.90 at least those 16 different language groups were 00:19:58.93\00:20:01.20 represented that the disciples could speak in. 00:20:01.23\00:20:03.62 I bet you we have over 16 language groups 00:20:03.65\00:20:05.61 in this church right now, right? 00:20:05.64\00:20:07.58 Praise the Lord, most of you speak English also. 00:20:07.61\00:20:11.65 But, wouldn't it be wonderful if the Holy Spirit 00:20:11.68\00:20:14.78 was poured out, we could all go back to our native countries 00:20:14.81\00:20:17.57 and bring the truth the way they did, you know what I'm saying? 00:20:17.60\00:20:20.34 This is what happened, so it was a perfect 00:20:20.37\00:20:23.00 way for the Lord to do it. 00:20:23.03\00:20:24.18 Now I said there are 3 examples 00:20:24.22\00:20:25.76 of speaking in tongues in the Bible. 00:20:25.79\00:20:27.31 The other example is Cornelius. 00:20:27.34\00:20:29.33 And I'm not going to have time to read all these in depth. 00:20:29.36\00:20:31.55 If you read in Acts 10, you'll read where 00:20:31.58\00:20:35.43 Cornelius was a Roman centurion; now the gospel is going to the 00:20:35.46\00:20:41.72 Gentiles - this is after the stoning of Stephen; 00:20:41.75\00:20:45.04 Peter goes to this house, it's the first time he is 00:20:45.07\00:20:47.63 preaching to a Gentile... 00:20:47.66\00:20:48.90 Cornelius is a centurion from the Italian band. 00:20:48.93\00:20:52.90 What language do you think they spoke? 00:20:52.93\00:20:54.54 Latin, Italian... right? 00:20:54.57\00:20:57.52 He has servants in his household. 00:20:57.55\00:20:59.84 The servants in the Roman Empire could be from anywhere. 00:20:59.87\00:21:02.74 They spoke other languages. 00:21:02.77\00:21:04.52 Peter who speaks Jewish now, is being invited by the servants 00:21:04.55\00:21:08.32 in Cornelius' household to go and the angel said 00:21:08.35\00:21:11.72 Peter is going to come and he's going to teach to you. 00:21:11.75\00:21:13.82 Peter begins to talk; they understand partially 00:21:13.85\00:21:16.75 what he's saying - it's not their native tongue. 00:21:16.78\00:21:18.96 While Peter is preaching about Jesus in Aramaic, 00:21:18.99\00:21:22.10 the Holy Spirit falls upon them. 00:21:22.13\00:21:25.03 Acts 10:44, "While Peter yet spake these words, 00:21:25.06\00:21:32.16 the Holy ghost fell on them which heard the word. 00:21:32.19\00:21:35.94 Those who were of the circumcision which believed, 00:21:35.97\00:21:38.16 were astonished because as many as came with Peter 00:21:38.19\00:21:40.72 ... the Jews would come, were surprised that on the 00:21:40.75\00:21:43.92 Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost 00:21:43.95\00:21:47.43 for they heard them speak with tongues... 00:21:47.46\00:21:49.36 That means they understood them speaking with tongues 00:21:49.39\00:21:52.35 and magnify God. 00:21:52.38\00:21:54.11 That means they could understand what they were saying 00:21:54.14\00:21:56.55 in those tongues, they were magnifying God. 00:21:56.58\00:21:58.25 They weren't just babbling... does that make sense? 00:21:58.28\00:22:01.29 The same way the Holy Spirit was poured out in Acts 10, 00:22:01.32\00:22:04.09 is the same gift that you find in Acts 2. 00:22:04.12\00:22:06.89 If you don't believe Pastor Doug, 00:22:06.92\00:22:08.53 you read in verse 15, Peter, and this is in Acts 11:15, 00:22:08.56\00:22:15.00 you might want to look that up. 00:22:15.03\00:22:17.09 When Peter reports back to the council in Jerusalem, 00:22:17.12\00:22:19.84 how God is now sending the Holy Spirit on the Gentiles, 00:22:19.87\00:22:22.64 listen to what Peter says, "The Holy Ghost fell on 00:22:22.67\00:22:26.44 them as it fell on us at the beginning." 00:22:26.47\00:22:30.46 So what kind of gift of tongues do they get in Acts 10, 00:22:30.49\00:22:33.48 something new, a new variety? 00:22:33.51\00:22:35.33 Or is it the same kind of gift of tongues Peter says that 00:22:35.36\00:22:37.66 we had at the beginning? Right? 00:22:37.69\00:22:40.56 It's languages that could be understood. 00:22:40.59\00:22:43.65 Then you've got the third example of speaking in tongues 00:22:43.68\00:22:46.32 that you're going to find in Acts 19. 00:22:46.35\00:22:50.14 This also is a place where it talks about rebaptism. 00:22:50.17\00:22:53.83 The 12 Ephesian disciples. 00:22:53.86\00:22:56.70 We all know that Jesus had 12 Jewish disciples. 00:22:56.73\00:23:00.51 Do you know, after the gospel went to the Gentiles, 00:23:00.54\00:23:02.63 you find a story where there's 12 Gentile disciples. 00:23:02.66\00:23:06.47 Acts 19, Paul preaches to these 12 Ephesians who were 00:23:06.50\00:23:11.07 baptized by John the Baptist; 00:23:11.10\00:23:12.97 they had not heard the story about Jesus yet. 00:23:13.00\00:23:15.53 He preaches to them about Jesus. 00:23:15.56\00:23:17.46 He lays hands upon them, I'm in Acts 19:6, 00:23:17.49\00:23:21.23 "The Holy Ghost came on them and they spoke with tongues 00:23:21.26\00:23:24.76 and prophesied." 00:23:24.79\00:23:26.14 Now what does prophesied mean? It means they preached. 00:23:26.17\00:23:29.83 Prophesied does mean you walk around giving 00:23:29.86\00:23:32.27 astrological fortune cookies. 00:23:32.30\00:23:34.72 Prophesied means that you preach. 00:23:34.75\00:23:37.44 And so, could they understand 00:23:37.47\00:23:39.64 what they were saying in these tongues? 00:23:39.67\00:23:40.89 Yeah, it says they were prophesying, they were preaching 00:23:40.92\00:23:43.88 Were there different language groups present? 00:23:43.91\00:23:45.51 You've got Paul, you've got Luke, you've got Ephesians. 00:23:45.54\00:23:48.68 So there are several language groups that are present there, 00:23:48.71\00:23:51.45 they needed the gift of tongues. 00:23:51.48\00:23:53.70 They recognized there was the difference of tongues. 00:23:53.73\00:23:55.80 The very fact that Luke doesn't say the Holy Spirit 00:23:55.83\00:23:58.36 fell on them a whole different way; 00:23:58.39\00:23:59.90 they got a different kind of gift of tongues. 00:23:59.93\00:24:02.09 He doesn't say that which means it's the same 00:24:02.12\00:24:05.35 kind of gift of tongues that you saw in Acts 10, 00:24:05.38\00:24:07.68 and that you saw in Acts 2. 00:24:07.71\00:24:09.63 There you have it friends, we've looked at all 00:24:09.66\00:24:11.39 of the examples of speaking in tongues in the Bible 00:24:11.42\00:24:14.06 and no where do you see an example of this 00:24:14.09\00:24:18.05 incoherent muttering and babbling where the person 00:24:18.08\00:24:21.89 speaking may not even know what they're saying. 00:24:21.92\00:24:24.64 There is a counterfeit that has been introduced. 00:24:24.67\00:24:28.67 For every truth of God, Satan has a counterfeit. 00:24:28.70\00:24:33.63 Is there counterfeit love? 00:24:33.66\00:24:35.33 Is there a counterfeit for the Holy Spirit? 00:24:35.36\00:24:41.29 You can bet there is. 00:24:41.32\00:24:42.38 Does God has a counterfeit law, a counterfeit Sabbath? 00:24:42.41\00:24:47.27 The devil - I mean. 00:24:47.30\00:24:48.34 The devil has got a counterfeit for every truth of God. 00:24:48.37\00:24:50.75 It shouldn't surprise us that he not only has a 00:24:50.78\00:24:52.80 counterfeit for tongues. 00:24:52.83\00:24:53.87 There's a true gift of tongues. 00:24:53.90\00:24:55.16 I want to reiterate, I believe in all the gifts of the Spirit. 00:24:55.19\00:24:57.67 I believe in miracles. I believe in healing. 00:24:57.70\00:24:59.54 I believe in casting out devils, I believe in prophecy. 00:24:59.57\00:25:01.25 I believe in all the gifts of the Spirit. 00:25:02.19\00:25:03.85 But there's been a cuckoo bird egg 00:25:03.88\00:25:08.11 that's been laid in the church that is not the gift of tongues. 00:25:08.14\00:25:12.73 And, it has confused a lot of people, 00:25:12.76\00:25:15.42 and you know what breaks my heart? 00:25:15.45\00:25:16.87 While I was studying and preparing for this last night, 00:25:16.90\00:25:19.23 I read the testimony of one young lady who said, 00:25:19.26\00:25:22.28 "I have become a atheist because I grew up in a church where they 00:25:22.31\00:25:25.78 did the most bizarre things and she was referring to this 00:25:25.81\00:25:28.84 common practice of babbling incoherently, 00:25:28.87\00:25:31.92 the out-of-control behavior, and she said, 00:25:31.95\00:25:33.59 "I just couldn't believe that that was God," 00:25:33.62\00:25:35.29 so she had given herself to atheism, a young lady. 00:25:35.32\00:25:38.77 A lot of people have been turned away from Christianity 00:25:38.80\00:25:41.28 because God says, "Come now let us reason together." 00:25:41.31\00:25:45.27 God is not the author of confusion. 00:25:45.30\00:25:47.98 The pandemonium and the bedlam and the cacophony of noise 00:25:48.01\00:25:51.30 that's done in the name of the Lord. 00:25:51.33\00:25:52.92 That's why here at Central, we often make a big deal about 00:25:52.95\00:25:55.75 reverence in worship. 00:25:55.78\00:25:57.92 God is orderly and I think that there ought to be respect. 00:25:57.95\00:26:02.73 I like it when you say, "Amen," that's good! 00:26:02.76\00:26:04.88 And you're just saying, we agree, 00:26:04.91\00:26:07.41 but there's communication. 00:26:07.44\00:26:09.54 Now I'm going to get more into the process of that. 00:26:09.57\00:26:13.21 But even by definition, "glossolalia" 00:26:13.24\00:26:18.44 It comes from... this is this popular ecstatic utterance, 00:26:18.47\00:26:21.64 the babbling that they call speaking in tongues; 00:26:21.67\00:26:23.71 it's a combination of 2 words, "glossia" which means 00:26:23.74\00:26:28.43 "language and then to speak or tongues and then to speak." 00:26:28.46\00:26:32.73 According to the "American Heritage Dictionary," 00:26:32.76\00:26:35.12 it is fabricated and non-meaningful speech, 00:26:35.15\00:26:38.80 especially such seen associated with a trans-state 00:26:38.83\00:26:42.57 or certain schizophrenic syndromes. 00:26:42.60\00:26:45.71 That's not me, it's not my church, 00:26:45.74\00:26:47.77 this is the "American Heritage Dictionary." 00:26:47.80\00:26:50.48 What is a language? 00:26:50.51\00:26:53.20 According to the same dictionary, the language is 00:26:53.23\00:26:55.28 the use by human beings of voice sounds, often written symbols 00:26:55.31\00:27:00.20 representing these sounds in organized combinations with 00:27:00.23\00:27:03.81 patterns in order to express and communicate those thoughts 00:27:03.84\00:27:07.49 and feelings. 00:27:07.52\00:27:09.00 By any definition, the disjointed, repetitive gibberish 00:27:09.03\00:27:13.78 that you often hear is not a language. 00:27:13.81\00:27:16.23 As-a-matter-of-fact, I can't remember their names right now, 00:27:16.26\00:27:18.75 but a couple of gentlemen wrote some books and have done 00:27:18.78\00:27:22.77 some studies on this phenomenon that has spread through the 00:27:22.80\00:27:27.21 Protestant and Catholic Churches of speaking in tongues 00:27:27.24\00:27:30.87 where they recorded somebody speaking in tongues... 00:27:30.90\00:27:34.52 And then they took this to linguists from a number of 00:27:34.55\00:27:36.72 different countries; experts in studying languages 00:27:36.75\00:27:39.63 and articulation and they said, "What language is this?" 00:27:39.66\00:27:42.55 All of them came back with the same conclusion, 00:27:42.58\00:27:44.98 They said, "This couldn't be any language, 00:27:45.01\00:27:47.63 earthly or otherwise because most of it is repeating words 00:27:47.66\00:27:50.93 and there is no sequence, no system to it that would 00:27:50.96\00:27:54.14 communicate any kind of organized thought, 00:27:54.17\00:27:56.59 it doesn't meet the definition of language." 00:27:56.62\00:28:00.56 Now I have some quotes, this is from "The New York Times," 00:28:00.59\00:28:04.22 a recent article dealing with the subject of tongues. 00:28:04.25\00:28:07.06 The Catholics were quite worried a few years ago; 00:28:07.09\00:28:09.54 an estimated 1.3 million Latino Catholics have 00:28:09.57\00:28:13.02 given up the Roman Catholicism and embraced Pentecostalism 00:28:13.05\00:28:16.92 since immigrating to the United States. 00:28:16.95\00:28:18.76 Well, one way that they've compensated, 00:28:18.79\00:28:22.02 now the Catholic Churches are welcoming 00:28:22.05\00:28:25.05 speaking in tongues in their church.. 00:28:25.08\00:28:28.19 They find it doesn't really conflict with most of their 00:28:28.22\00:28:30.21 doctrines and so they figure, better join them than lose them. 00:28:30.24\00:28:35.11 And so a number of Catholic Churches 00:28:35.14\00:28:37.00 are now charismatic churches. 00:28:37.03\00:28:38.69 Go on to the next slide here... 00:28:38.72\00:28:41.07 Some one who is speaking about this... 00:28:41.10\00:28:43.03 Speaking in tongues is a controversial practice 00:28:43.06\00:28:45.69 to many Christians, but others consider it a gift from God. 00:28:45.72\00:28:49.90 Continue... And many people who attend the 00:28:49.93\00:28:53.54 "Freedom Valley Worship Center" in Gettysburg, 00:28:53.57\00:28:55.42 ...this is one church that they picked out... 00:28:55.45\00:28:57.30 prayed for that gift. 00:28:57.33\00:28:58.48 This is in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. 00:28:58.51\00:29:00.66 "For me, it's almost as if I'm able to tap into God's heart 00:29:00.69\00:29:05.42 and what He wants," said Amber Crone, 00:29:05.45\00:29:07.60 a member of the church. 00:29:07.63\00:29:09.33 "I don't really know what I'm saying, but I know it's 00:29:09.36\00:29:12.74 what God wants me to say and to speak." 00:29:12.77\00:29:14.84 "You can feel Him... I want you to notice the 00:29:14.87\00:29:17.16 emphasis on feeling... 00:29:17.19\00:29:18.33 "You can feel Him all around you; you can feel Him 00:29:18.36\00:29:21.49 speaking through the words that you are saying." 00:29:21.52\00:29:25.72 Next slide, Crone's friend, Kelly, describes 00:29:25.75\00:29:28.08 what she says is a feeling of connection to God. 00:29:28.11\00:29:30.99 "I know some people get a warm, fuzzy feeling going on inside; 00:29:31.02\00:29:34.67 for me - I get goose bumps actually." 00:29:34.70\00:29:37.25 Are goose bumps a feeling too? 00:29:37.28\00:29:39.33 So much of it is not dealing with spiritual enlightenment 00:29:39.36\00:29:44.55 of truth that sets you free. 00:29:44.58\00:29:46.88 It's all actually very basic and carnal. 00:29:46.91\00:29:50.16 And you might wonder, how did it find its way into the church. 00:29:50.19\00:29:53.86 In virtually every pagan religion of the world, 00:29:53.89\00:29:58.09 you find this dynamic. 00:29:58.12\00:30:00.81 It can be traced back, for instance to the 00:30:00.84\00:30:02.61 "Oracle of Delphi" in Greece and you know the Greeks had 00:30:02.64\00:30:05.27 conquered the then civilized world... 00:30:05.30\00:30:08.35 That people would go to this place and there is an actual 00:30:08.38\00:30:11.94 picture of the ruins of the "Oracle of Delphi" 00:30:11.97\00:30:14.49 and the whole cult religion was developed around this. 00:30:14.52\00:30:17.84 And the people were wanting a message from the gods. 00:30:17.87\00:30:21.13 They would go and consult the Oracle - 00:30:21.16\00:30:22.96 Have you heard that term before? 00:30:22.99\00:30:24.72 And what would happen is, the priest would go through 00:30:24.75\00:30:27.67 these incantations and there was a priestess there who was 00:30:27.70\00:30:30.30 called the "Sibyl" or a "Pythia" 00:30:30.33\00:30:34.87 and that's where you get the word - to say something 00:30:34.90\00:30:37.15 in a "pithy" way. 00:30:37.18\00:30:38.83 She would inhale these vapors that were intoxicating, 00:30:38.86\00:30:44.48 go into a trance; the music would be playing; 00:30:44.51\00:30:47.49 the drums would be beating; 00:30:47.52\00:30:49.04 she would begin to utter these ecstatic gibberish utterings, 00:30:49.07\00:30:53.48 and then the priest would interpret them. 00:30:53.51\00:30:56.24 And, as-a-matter-of-fact, I think I've actually got a 00:30:56.27\00:31:00.41 quote here that explains, from the dictionary, 00:31:00.44\00:31:04.25 or the encyclopedia, how this works. 00:31:04.28\00:31:08.97 I told you I've got a lot of information, 00:31:09.00\00:31:10.29 let me see if I can find this real quick. 00:31:10.32\00:31:12.01 Here we go - "While exhilarating music 00:31:12.04\00:31:14.65 was playing, the chief priestess named the Pythia 00:31:14.68\00:31:17.38 would breathe intoxicating vapors and go into a 00:31:17.41\00:31:19.40 frenzied trance and then begin jabbering. 00:31:19.43\00:31:21.90 The weird sounds of the priestess muttered were then 00:31:21.93\00:31:24.46 interpreted by the priest who spoke in verse. 00:31:24.49\00:31:27.72 Her utterances were regarded as the words of Apollo. 00:31:27.75\00:31:31.10 But the messages were so ambiguous, 00:31:31.13\00:31:33.19 they could seldom be proven wrong." 00:31:33.22\00:31:34.98 That's from "Compton's Encyclopedia." 00:31:35.01\00:31:37.31 Well, you know, we found this a lot in the 00:31:37.34\00:31:40.10 churches I used to worship. 00:31:40.13\00:31:42.28 I'll tell you another little study that was done 00:31:42.32\00:31:44.76 by the same gentlemen from New York who did the study on 00:31:44.79\00:31:47.60 tongues. 00:31:47.63\00:31:48.80 They took an excerpt on somebody speaking in tongues 00:31:48.83\00:31:51.53 in a worship service - got a clear recording, 00:31:51.56\00:31:53.63 and they went to 100 different charismatic ministers 00:31:53.66\00:31:57.25 that believe that they had the gift of tongues, 00:31:57.28\00:31:59.65 and they went under the guise of "We're Christians 00:31:59.68\00:32:03.88 and we got a recording of someone speaking in tongues 00:32:03.91\00:32:05.81 and we'd like to know what this message is." 00:32:05.84\00:32:07.64 They played the tape and the pastor would say, 00:32:07.67\00:32:10.02 "Oh, thus saith the Lord" and he'd say what the message 00:32:10.05\00:32:12.51 was and they'd write it down. 00:32:12.54\00:32:13.82 They took the same tape of someone speaking in tongues 00:32:13.86\00:32:18.67 to 100 different ministers... 00:32:18.70\00:32:20.06 Guess how many different interpretations there were? 00:32:20.09\00:32:23.35 100 different interpretations! 00:32:23.38\00:32:27.47 Which makes it a very dubious or a suspicious gift. 00:32:27.50\00:32:31.92 And yet, so many people, dear people and bright people... 00:32:31.95\00:32:35.93 And, you know, they used to call them "holy rollers," 00:32:35.96\00:32:39.05 they used to say it was the uneducated. 00:32:39.08\00:32:41.36 Oh, I haven't given you all the history. 00:32:41.39\00:32:43.68 This is very common... when I worked with the Navajos 00:32:43.71\00:32:47.67 in North America. 00:32:47.70\00:32:50.02 They would eat peyote, hallucinogenics; 00:32:50.05\00:32:52.90 they would go into a sweat lodge; 00:32:52.93\00:32:55.15 they would beat the drums all night long. 00:32:55.18\00:32:57.13 We could hear them from our mission station. 00:32:57.16\00:32:59.74 They'd go into a trance; they'd begin muttering, 00:32:59.77\00:33:01.83 jabbering and they said it was the language of the gods. 00:33:01.86\00:33:05.66 In Africa, very common... I've been there. 00:33:05.69\00:33:09.19 Beating the drums - all night long we could hear them. 00:33:09.22\00:33:12.16 And they'd finally get worked into a frenzy; 00:33:12.19\00:33:14.65 they'd go into a trance; they'd be possessed. 00:33:14.68\00:33:16.47 They'd say they're possessed by the gods and begin 00:33:16.50\00:33:19.01 jabbering and babbling. 00:33:19.04\00:33:22.35 And the truth is when many of the African slaves 00:33:22.38\00:33:26.91 came to North America and the Christian missionaries 00:33:26.94\00:33:29.60 would give them just the basics of the gospel, 00:33:29.63\00:33:31.88 many of them couldn't read English and they talked 00:33:31.91\00:33:34.72 to them about tongues and they'd say, "Oh, we know what 00:33:34.75\00:33:36.07 that is, we had that back home." 00:33:36.10\00:33:38.33 And they began to introduce the pagan concept of tongues 00:33:38.36\00:33:44.11 into their Christian worship, and it was at first 00:33:44.14\00:33:46.96 just among the slaves. 00:33:46.99\00:33:48.60 Then it found its way through the South among the poor. 00:33:48.63\00:33:51.48 Then it found its way to LA on what they call "Azusa Street" 00:33:51.51\00:33:55.08 and it became more mainline. 00:33:55.11\00:33:57.72 Then it went from just the Pentecostal Churches 00:33:57.75\00:34:00.65 and the Assembly of God Churches into the Methodist Churches, 00:34:00.68\00:34:03.68 the Baptist Churches, the Presbyterian Churches, 00:34:03.71\00:34:06.86 the Episcopal Churches and it began to spread. 00:34:06.89\00:34:11.67 But what you've got is it's a pagan trance. 00:34:11.70\00:34:14.23 These people are dear people and they just 00:34:14.26\00:34:17.79 have been swept up in this thing and it feels good! 00:34:17.82\00:34:20.45 I don't question whether they're feeling something, 00:34:20.48\00:34:22.55 I don't question whether a spirit is coming over them. 00:34:22.58\00:34:26.60 But if the devil was going to counterfeit the Holy Spirit, 00:34:26.63\00:34:29.43 and he's going to try and market it, 00:34:29.46\00:34:30.68 would he want you to feel bad, 00:34:30.71\00:34:31.76 or would he want you to feel good? 00:34:31.79\00:34:34.48 I mean, who would want to do it - if he didn't feel good? 00:34:34.51\00:34:37.95 So is that our criteria, what's our criteria to 00:34:37.98\00:34:40.23 measure whether something is true or not? 00:34:40.26\00:34:42.94 What does the Bible say? 00:34:42.97\00:34:44.21 I've got another quote here also from the New York Times. 00:34:44.24\00:34:47.85 Researches at the University of Pennsylvania took 00:34:47.88\00:34:51.03 brain images of 5 women while they spoke in tongues 00:34:51.06\00:34:54.25 and found that their frontal lobes, 00:34:54.28\00:34:56.86 the thinking, willful part of the brain 00:34:56.89\00:34:59.39 through which people control what they do, 00:34:59.42\00:35:01.42 were relatively quiet as were their language centers. 00:35:01.45\00:35:06.54 And here, we've got actual pictures of the MRIs, 00:35:06.57\00:35:09.12 you can see for yourself, they're posted online 00:35:09.15\00:35:11.07 from the study. 00:35:11.10\00:35:12.15 The language centers of the brain in the frontal lobes 00:35:12.18\00:35:14.93 were very quiet meaning that this gift of tongues 00:35:14.96\00:35:17.53 was not coming from the cognitive part, 00:35:17.56\00:35:19.60 but more, the animalistic feeling part of the brains. 00:35:19.63\00:35:24.21 That would make it suspect and some of the people 00:35:24.24\00:35:27.94 that go under this trance of tongues, 00:35:27.97\00:35:29.88 they're speaking in tongues and they say, 00:35:29.91\00:35:31.45 "Well I don't know what I'm saying." 00:35:31.49\00:35:33.41 It's a prayer language. 00:35:33.44\00:35:35.30 Now the Bible says that when you speak, 00:35:35.33\00:35:37.46 you should make what you say clear. 00:35:37.49\00:35:39.72 Let's go back to some of these principles here... 00:35:39.75\00:35:42.53 Turn with me to 1 Corinthians and we're going to look at 00:35:42.56\00:35:47.43 some of the verses that talk about the gift of tongues. 00:35:47.46\00:35:49.75 Just turn to 1 Corinthians and 00:35:49.78\00:35:51.60 I'm going to address this a little bit. 00:35:51.63\00:35:55.29 Start with chapter 14, for instance... 00:35:55.32\00:36:00.85 He talks quite a bit here about the gifts of the Spirit. 00:36:00.88\00:36:05.19 As-a-matter-of-fact, if you've got you Bible opened to 00:36:05.22\00:36:07.66 1 Corinthians 14:1, go up one verse to the last verse 00:36:07.69\00:36:12.61 of chapter 13, 1 Corinthians 13:13, 00:36:12.64\00:36:17.16 Oh, I want chapter 12, verse 31, sorry... 00:36:17.19\00:36:25.08 "But earnestly desire the best gifts, 00:36:25.11\00:36:28.46 and I'll show you a more excellent way." 00:36:28.50\00:36:30.81 He says - we should desire the best gifts of the Sprit, okay? 00:36:30.85\00:36:34.50 Now go to chapter 14, verse 1, "Pursue love and desire 00:36:34.53\00:36:39.55 spiritual gifts, but especially that you might prophesy." 00:36:39.58\00:36:43.41 So, of the gifts that we should desire, 00:36:43.44\00:36:45.13 what gift does Paul say that we should especially focus on? 00:36:45.16\00:36:48.29 Prophecy and prophecy, like I said is not talking about your 00:36:48.32\00:36:51.41 going around like Elijah or John the Baptist - making predictions 00:36:51.45\00:36:56.27 Prophecy here in 1 Corinthians is a Greek word and means 00:36:56.31\00:36:57.90 to speak in behalf of someone else. 00:36:57.93\00:36:59.74 It means o preach or to share, to teach for Christ, 00:36:59.77\00:37:02.32 the gifts of prophecy. 00:37:02.35\00:37:03.90 "For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men, 00:37:03.93\00:37:06.93 but to God for no one understands him; 00:37:06.96\00:37:09.10 however, in the Spirit, he speaks mysteries." 00:37:09.13\00:37:11.49 Okay, we gotta stop here and explain something... 00:37:11.52\00:37:14.38 Most of what Paul says about tongues is in 1 Corinthians... 00:37:14.41\00:37:18.15 No.. All of what Paul says about tongues is in 1 Corinthians. 00:37:18.18\00:37:21.66 Paul wrote most in the New Testament. 00:37:21.69\00:37:23.71 He only talks about tongues in one book, 00:37:23.74\00:37:26.49 not even in 2 Corinthians. 00:37:26.52\00:37:28.52 As-a-matter-of-fact, Matthew never mentions tongues; 00:37:28.55\00:37:32.08 John never mentions tongues; 00:37:32.11\00:37:34.85 Luke never mentions tongues except in Acts - 00:37:34.88\00:37:37.25 he doesn't in his Gospel; 00:37:37.28\00:37:38.91 Peter never mentions tongues; 00:37:38.94\00:37:41.08 James never mentions tongues, 00:37:41.11\00:37:43.08 and yet, in spite of the silence of all these other 00:37:43.11\00:37:45.25 Bible writers, if you go to many charismatic churches, 00:37:45.28\00:37:48.21 you would think that that was all they talked about. 00:37:48.24\00:37:51.29 And when the gifts of the Spirit are listed, 00:37:51.32\00:37:53.93 they typically turn the list upside-down, where he talks 00:37:53.96\00:37:57.65 about the most important gift is prophecy; 00:37:57.68\00:37:59.51 the least important is tongues. 00:37:59.54\00:38:01.74 Now, back to Corinth... 00:38:01.77\00:38:03.38 Corinth was a booming, new, baby church 00:38:03.41\00:38:08.97 that Paul had planted. 00:38:09.00\00:38:10.54 It's a seaport in the Roman Empire where it was a 00:38:10.57\00:38:15.65 melting pot of people and slaves from all over the Roman Empire. 00:38:15.68\00:38:20.61 And some of them had come from Northern Africa, 00:38:20.64\00:38:22.97 and some of them had maybe come from India, 00:38:23.00\00:38:24.43 and some of them had come from Spain and from Corinth, 00:38:24.46\00:38:26.86 and they were from all over. 00:38:26.89\00:38:28.35 Their services were often very confusing because there were 00:38:28.38\00:38:33.66 people from all over the world 00:38:33.69\00:38:35.21 and they all spoke different languages. 00:38:35.24\00:38:37.74 Now I've been in churches like that where you not only 00:38:37.77\00:38:41.94 have the mother tongue of the people that you're with 00:38:41.97\00:38:43.80 but you've got other primary tongues, 00:38:43.83\00:38:45.51 and nobody wants to totally feel left out, 00:38:45.54\00:38:48.18 and so you got some people there who might speak English, 00:38:48.21\00:38:50.35 and some people there who might speak Korean, 00:38:50.38\00:38:52.36 and some speak Chinese and some speak Mandarin. 00:38:52.39\00:38:55.45 And so during the services, they'll have the guest speaker, 00:38:55.48\00:38:59.06 everyone wants to know what's being said... 00:38:59.09\00:39:01.19 I see it happening here at Central almost every week. 00:39:01.22\00:39:04.45 I'll see somebody leaning over to a brother or sister 00:39:04.48\00:39:07.14 that speaks almost only Spanish or almost only Romanian 00:39:07.17\00:39:11.21 or some other language and they're trying to whisper 00:39:11.24\00:39:13.64 quietly to that person while I teach and that's great! 00:39:13.67\00:39:17.30 Because otherwise, you know what has to happen 00:39:17.33\00:39:19.13 is I'd say something in English, somebody else would be here 00:39:19.16\00:39:21.87 and they'd have to say it in Japanese, 00:39:21.90\00:39:23.49 then a third person would have to say it in Korean, 00:39:23.52\00:39:26.01 and someone else would have to say it in Mandarin. 00:39:26.04\00:39:28.64 And so the services in Corinth were getting very confusing 00:39:28.67\00:39:31.28 because people were standing up whether there was a 00:39:31.31\00:39:32.96 translator - an interpreter or not and they are preaching 00:39:32.99\00:39:35.78 and praying and praising God and testifying! 00:39:35.81\00:39:37.82 What good will it do you right now if I should start 00:39:37.85\00:39:40.46 preaching the rest of the sermon in a language 00:39:40.49\00:39:42.07 you don't understand? 00:39:42.10\00:39:43.98 Would God understand if it was a language of the world? 00:39:44.01\00:39:47.06 Would He understand? Yeah 00:39:47.09\00:39:49.33 So I'm speaking mysteries in the spirit 00:39:49.36\00:39:51.78 if it's not profiting you. 00:39:51.81\00:39:53.70 This is what was happening... 00:39:53.73\00:39:55.34 That's what Paul is talking about. 00:39:55.37\00:39:57.06 Once you understand that at the outset, 00:39:57.09\00:39:59.10 it all makes sense and it falls into place. 00:39:59.13\00:40:01.24 He's chastising His church for their speaking without 00:40:01.27\00:40:05.58 organization in their services and languages 00:40:05.61\00:40:07.89 that people couldn't understand. 00:40:07.92\00:40:09.26 They were preaching and praying in some of their tongues 00:40:09.29\00:40:11.81 that they had received - some might have been 00:40:11.84\00:40:13.11 normal languages they grew up learning; 00:40:13.14\00:40:15.35 others they might have received miraculously - it doesn't matter 00:40:15.38\00:40:18.41 ... the people listening didn't understand! 00:40:18.44\00:40:21.76 Keep in mind, at the Day of Pentecost, 00:40:21.79\00:40:23.91 it was not the gift of hearing, it was the gift of speaking. 00:40:23.94\00:40:30.33 They were not ears of fire that landed on their heads, 00:40:30.36\00:40:34.40 they were tongues of fire - is that right? 00:40:34.43\00:40:36.81 But they didn't have the gift of hearing, 00:40:36.84\00:40:39.06 it was the gift of speaking in other languages. 00:40:39.09\00:40:42.03 So that why Paul said it was so important that when you do 00:40:42.06\00:40:44.24 speak in tongues, the people there know what it is 00:40:44.27\00:40:46.28 that you're saying. 00:40:46.31\00:40:47.72 Now, if there's anything that's clear 00:40:47.75\00:40:49.67 from 1 Corinthians 14, it's that he wants them 00:40:49.70\00:40:53.46 to understand what others are saying. 00:40:53.50\00:40:55.12 Let me just give you a couple of high points 00:40:55.16\00:40:56.83 because we're moving right along here. 00:40:56.86\00:40:59.14 For instance, verse 7, "Even things without life 00:40:59.17\00:41:02.97 whether flute or harp, when they make a sound, 00:41:03.00\00:41:05.33 unless there's a distinction in the sound, 00:41:05.36\00:41:07.50 how will it be known what is piped or played? 00:41:07.53\00:41:11.20 For if the trumpet makes an uncertain sound, 00:41:11.23\00:41:13.80 who will prepare himself for battle?" 00:41:13.83\00:41:16.13 Let me see if I... Oh, bless your heart, okay! 00:41:16.16\00:41:19.80 Thank you very much. 00:41:19.83\00:41:21.25 Now I want to really find out who owns this... 00:41:21.28\00:41:24.99 Do I have - I brushed my teeth before I started preaching, 00:41:25.02\00:41:27.86 can I use this? Yes! You trust me, 00:41:27.89\00:41:29.94 you might need to sterilize this end. 00:41:29.97\00:41:33.64 All right, if I was going to ask you to all sing along 00:41:33.67\00:41:36.26 with me, would you be willing? 00:41:36.29\00:41:38.65 Okay, I think you'll recognize this number. 00:41:38.68\00:41:41.34 No? All right, let me see, if I was to do... 00:41:53.03\00:41:57.77 All right, I've played a lot more of that one, 00:42:14.82\00:42:17.04 but if I were to go... 00:42:17.08\00:42:18.96 How many notes did I play? 00:42:24.18\00:42:26.15 Did you recognize it? Yes 00:42:26.18\00:42:28.33 Why? Because there's some organization 00:42:28.36\00:42:30.40 and distinction to it, right? 00:42:30.43\00:42:32.70 But what happens in these churches all the time, 00:42:32.73\00:42:35.58 there's no organization or distinction, 00:42:35.61\00:42:37.45 they don't know what's being said. 00:42:37.48\00:42:39.25 Paul said, "If the trumpet gives an 00:42:39.28\00:42:41.89 uncertain sound... I didn't have a trumpet. 00:42:41.92\00:42:43.76 I didn't think to bring one, thank you. 00:42:43.80\00:42:45.60 If the trumpet gives an uncertain sound, 00:42:45.64\00:42:47.70 who will prepare for the battle? 00:42:47.73\00:42:49.40 When I used to go to military school, 00:42:49.43\00:42:51.36 every morning, over the PA speaker, 00:42:51.39\00:42:54.00 we would hear... 00:42:54.03\00:42:59.34 That was the sound - nobody made any announcement, 00:42:59.37\00:43:01.96 but we knew what that meant. 00:43:01.99\00:43:03.92 Then at the end of the day, we'd hear... 00:43:03.95\00:43:09.10 See, I can play the trumpet without the trumpet. 00:43:09.13\00:43:10.61 And that would mean go to bed. 00:43:13.00\00:43:14.91 Or, if they were going to charge... 00:43:14.94\00:43:17.22 No, that's not charge... 00:43:17.25\00:43:20.81 That means charge! 00:43:20.84\00:43:22.23 And so, but back then they didn't have walkie-talkies 00:43:22.26\00:43:26.60 for the soldiers. 00:43:26.63\00:43:27.73 When they're directing troops on the field, 00:43:27.76\00:43:30.03 they used a trumpet. 00:43:30.06\00:43:31.23 Can you imagine if you had some schizophrenic trumpeter? 00:43:31.26\00:43:36.67 And the general is saying... 00:43:36.70\00:43:38.33 "Okay, tell them - flank left, charge!" 00:43:38.36\00:43:40.76 And all of a sudden he decides, "You know, I'm just 00:43:40.79\00:43:42.83 going to let the spirit lead," 00:43:42.86\00:43:45.88 and there is an indistinct sound. 00:43:45.91\00:43:48.17 So what is Paul saying? 00:43:48.20\00:43:49.63 There needs to be a distinction in the sound 00:43:49.66\00:43:52.45 or who is going to know what's being piped or heard... 00:43:52.48\00:43:55.28 Are you seeing, in some of the churches, something being done 00:43:55.31\00:43:58.67 called "tongues" and there's no distinction in the sound. 00:43:58.70\00:44:01.35 You don't know what's being said. 00:44:01.38\00:44:02.91 Listen here... Verse 9, underline this. 00:44:02.94\00:44:08.58 If you forget everything about 1 Corinthians 14, 00:44:08.61\00:44:10.62 don't miss this verse and you won't be confused. 00:44:10.65\00:44:12.90 "So likewise, unless you utter, by the tongue, 00:44:12.93\00:44:17.97 words easy to understand, how will it be known 00:44:18.00\00:44:22.16 what is spoken; you will be speaking into the air." 00:44:22.19\00:44:27.37 Bingo! Slam dunk! 00:44:27.40\00:44:30.60 This is what Paul is saying in this book! 00:44:30.63\00:44:35.64 I could go on here... "Therefore, if I don't know 00:44:35.67\00:44:38.75 the meaning of the language, I will be a foreigner 00:44:38.78\00:44:40.72 to him who speaks and he who speaks is a foreigner to me. 00:44:40.75\00:44:43.66 Even so, if you are zealous of spiritual gifts, 00:44:43.69\00:44:46.22 let it be for the edifying of the church." 00:44:46.25\00:44:48.90 It's got to build people up so they understand 00:44:48.93\00:44:52.04 what's being said, but a lot of my dear friends 00:44:52.07\00:44:53.88 that speak in tongues, they just start babbling, 00:44:53.91\00:44:57.15 and say, "Well, this is a heavenly prayer language." 00:44:57.18\00:45:02.47 Some are confused about the idea of praying in tongues, 00:45:02.50\00:45:06.94 have you heard that before? 00:45:06.97\00:45:08.18 They say, "Oh yeah, Pastor Doug, we agree completely 00:45:08.21\00:45:10.62 with Acts 10 and Acts 2 and Acts 19- that those were 00:45:10.65\00:45:14.92 languages of the world for the purpose of preaching the gospel" 00:45:14.95\00:45:17.93 But there's another gift of the Spirit that's praying in tongues 00:45:17.96\00:45:21.61 and this is, you know, the groanings that cannot be 00:45:21.64\00:45:24.30 uttered - spoken of in Romans where you don't know how to 00:45:24.33\00:45:27.24 pray and so you start to babble and it's just release, 00:45:27.27\00:45:29.67 and the Holy Spirit comes over and you pray. 00:45:29.70\00:45:31.65 First of all, how can you call it a tongue if it doesn't 00:45:31.68\00:45:37.50 communicate any thought? 00:45:37.53\00:45:39.63 Secondly, if you're praying and you don't know what 00:45:39.66\00:45:42.52 you're praying, how are you going to ever know 00:45:42.55\00:45:45.31 if that prayer was answered? 00:45:45.34\00:45:47.46 It's not even meeting the definition of tongue; 00:45:47.49\00:45:49.64 it doesn't meet the definition of prayer! 00:45:49.67\00:45:52.99 They take one verse - they say, "Well Paul prayed in 00:45:53.02\00:45:56.50 the tongue of angels." Oh really? 00:45:56.53\00:46:00.18 Turn with me back to 1 Corinthians 13:1 00:46:00.21\00:46:08.03 "Though I speak with the tongues of men and angels, 00:46:08.06\00:46:12.08 but I have not love, I've become as sounding brass 00:46:12.11\00:46:15.12 or a clinging cymbal." 00:46:15.15\00:46:17.27 Did Paul speak with the tongue of angels? 00:46:17.30\00:46:21.94 Well let's find out - he says "though" 00:46:21.97\00:46:23.56 Some of you have different translations, does it say - if? 00:46:23.59\00:46:27.03 Some of you got translations there like 00:46:27.06\00:46:28.65 "New American Standard" and "New Revised Standard" 00:46:28.68\00:46:30.26 It says "if." 00:46:30.29\00:46:32.14 Notice if you read on in verse 2... 00:46:32.17\00:46:34.02 "And though I have the gift of gift of prophecy 00:46:34.05\00:46:35.75 and understand all mysteries and all knowledge." 00:46:35.78\00:46:39.41 Wait a second, did Paul understand all mysteries 00:46:39.44\00:46:42.04 and have all knowledge? Does any man? 00:46:42.07\00:46:44.68 He says, "though," what does though mean? 00:46:44.71\00:46:46.06 "Even if" 00:46:46.09\00:46:47.88 And he says, "And though I have all faith 00:46:47.91\00:46:50.00 so I can remove mountains" 00:46:50.03\00:46:51.59 Did Paul have all faith? 00:46:51.62\00:46:53.58 No, he said, "even if." 00:46:53.61\00:46:56.08 "And though I give all my goods to feed the poor..." 00:46:56.11\00:46:58.88 Well he did have his tent-sewing equipment. 00:46:58.91\00:47:01.25 "And though I give my body to be burned..." 00:47:01.28\00:47:03.16 He didn't - he was beheaded. 00:47:03.19\00:47:05.40 He's saying, "even if, even if, even if, even if." 00:47:05.43\00:47:07.67 "If I don't have love, it's nothing." 00:47:07.70\00:47:09.74 So the first verse is also an "even if." 00:47:09.77\00:47:12.22 Even if I spoke with the tongues of men and angels... 00:47:12.25\00:47:14.66 He's not saying he speaks with the tongue of angels. 00:47:14.69\00:47:16.85 And yet they take that verse and say... 00:47:16.88\00:47:18.22 "This is the heavenly prayer language, the tongue of angels." 00:47:18.25\00:47:20.77 Go back now to chapter 14 again, verse 14. 00:47:20.80\00:47:26.10 They'll take what Paul says here, "For if I pray 00:47:26.13\00:47:29.95 in a tongue, my spirit prays but my understanding 00:47:29.98\00:47:33.96 is unfruitful." 00:47:33.99\00:47:35.32 They say - see I don't even know what I'm praying here, 00:47:35.35\00:47:37.34 my understanding is unfruitful. 00:47:37.37\00:47:40.20 Let me re-word this - let me translate this into American, 00:47:40.23\00:47:45.45 how this would be better understood. 00:47:45.48\00:47:48.71 "If I pray in a language those around me do not understand, 00:47:48.74\00:47:53.31 I might be praying with the Spirit but my thoughts 00:47:53.34\00:47:55.99 are unfruitful to those listening." 00:47:56.02\00:47:59.08 For instance, there's probably a couple of you here 00:47:59.11\00:48:01.36 that speak a little bit of Hebrew; 00:48:01.39\00:48:02.95 I only remember one prayer in Hebrew, 00:48:02.98\00:48:05.70 and I'm sure I don't even say it right. 00:48:05.74\00:48:07.43 It's... "Barukh ata Adonai Eloheinu, melekh ha'olam 00:48:07.46\00:48:10.47 hamotzi lechem min ha'aretz." 00:48:10.50\00:48:12.29 I think it's the prayer over the wine. 00:48:12.32\00:48:14.10 Could be the prayer over the bread. 00:48:14.13\00:48:16.65 Oh, I didn't get it right, close enough! 00:48:16.68\00:48:19.30 In any event, you didn't know what I said, right? 00:48:19.33\00:48:23.66 The idea was that I'm praying, I might know what I'm saying, 00:48:23.69\00:48:28.82 but my understanding is unfruitful to you! 00:48:28.85\00:48:32.24 Paul is not saying that he didn't know what he was praying. 00:48:32.27\00:48:34.32 He says, "When I'm praying in the Spirit, 00:48:34.35\00:48:36.21 you don't understand what I'm saying. 00:48:36.24\00:48:37.92 It's unfruitful to those around. 00:48:37.95\00:48:40.73 Sometimes when you translate from one language 00:48:40.76\00:48:42.79 to another, there are words that you need to 00:48:42.82\00:48:45.03 add to complete the thought. 00:48:45.06\00:48:47.62 And so friends, what's happening now is here in the 00:48:47.65\00:48:51.09 church in the last days, there's a great counterfeit 00:48:51.12\00:48:53.73 that has found its way into the church. 00:48:53.76\00:48:56.11 Are we supposed to tell if a person has the Holy Spirit 00:48:56.14\00:48:58.36 by the gifts of the Spirit or by the fruits of the Spirit? 00:48:58.39\00:49:02.29 Does Jesus say - You'll know them by their gifts, 00:49:02.32\00:49:05.55 or you'll know them by their fruits? 00:49:05.58\00:49:07.49 You know what I think is really interesting... 00:49:07.52\00:49:09.22 God says He gives the Holy Spirit to them that obey Him. 00:49:09.25\00:49:14.25 God gives the Holy Spirit to them that obey Him, 00:49:14.28\00:49:18.02 and yet I remember a few years ago there was just a whole 00:49:18.05\00:49:22.76 kaleidoscope of charismatic ministers that were in the 00:49:22.79\00:49:26.05 headlines that got into different kinds of trouble 00:49:26.08\00:49:29.66 that we're not going to talk about, 00:49:29.69\00:49:31.22 and all of them spoke in tongues. 00:49:31.25\00:49:34.20 I also thought it was interesting that when they 00:49:34.23\00:49:37.52 traveled to foreign countries, they would take an 00:49:37.55\00:49:39.82 entourage with them and I've seen it on T.V. 00:49:39.85\00:49:43.60 They always had translators there that they paid 00:49:43.63\00:49:47.29 to translate their sermons. 00:49:47.32\00:49:48.89 And I thought, if you've got the gift of tongues, 00:49:48.92\00:49:50.44 why do you need a translator? 00:49:50.47\00:49:53.07 Well, I mean, you'd think that Tongues 101 would 00:49:53.10\00:49:55.80 at least be able to preach to the people who are there, 00:49:55.83\00:49:58.15 like the apostles did, right? 00:49:58.18\00:50:00.21 This is very suspicious and, friends, please don't 00:50:00.24\00:50:03.20 see this as an attack. 00:50:03.23\00:50:04.75 This is not offence, this is defense. 00:50:04.78\00:50:07.27 I'm afraid because I see it encroaching among our people 00:50:07.30\00:50:10.99 and among our churches and it's just spreading, 00:50:11.02\00:50:13.50 and it is a counterfeit gift. 00:50:13.53\00:50:17.32 This is the evidence of Babylon, 00:50:17.35\00:50:19.62 and I'd like to make an appeal. 00:50:19.65\00:50:21.87 I've got friends out there, I used to worship 00:50:21.90\00:50:24.04 with these people and they'd say, "Pastor, I have spoken 00:50:24.07\00:50:27.19 in tongues and it feels so good, I know what it's like, 00:50:27.22\00:50:29.02 how can you tell me it's not real?" 00:50:29.05\00:50:30.22 I'm not denying that it's real. 00:50:30.25\00:50:32.74 I'm saying it's coming from the wrong source. 00:50:32.77\00:50:35.79 Some of it might be self-induced. 00:50:35.82\00:50:38.36 Sometimes your mind can play games on your own body. 00:50:38.39\00:50:41.40 Some of it might just be plainly another spirit 00:50:41.43\00:50:44.17 and the wrong spirit. 00:50:44.20\00:50:46.13 And don't forget, the devil, if he does anything well, 00:50:46.16\00:50:48.72 he tries to masquerade as messengers of Christ. 00:50:48.75\00:50:54.99 And I had more than one person who said, "Pastor Doug, when I 00:50:55.02\00:50:57.40 heard this message, even though I spoke in tongues, 00:50:57.43\00:51:00.53 ... they said, this makes sense biblically, but Lord, 00:51:00.56\00:51:02.67 if I'm doing something and this is not according to Your will, 00:51:02.70\00:51:05.91 take it away from me." 00:51:05.94\00:51:07.70 I know an Adventist minister, right now, 00:51:07.73\00:51:10.99 who prayed that prayer, used to speak in tongues, 00:51:11.02\00:51:12.67 and he said it went away and never came back. 00:51:12.70\00:51:15.53 Of course he wasn't a minister back then, he is now. 00:51:15.56\00:51:19.07 God just took it away from him. 00:51:19.10\00:51:20.85 A lot of people have told me that. 00:51:20.88\00:51:22.74 You just say, "Lord, if this is not from You, 00:51:22.77\00:51:25.35 I want to go by the Bible." 00:51:25.38\00:51:27.62 And if you follow the Bible, you're safe. 00:51:27.65\00:51:30.66 And you know what the bottom line is, friends? 00:51:30.69\00:51:33.46 Whenever you're in doubt about what to do, who is our example? 00:51:33.63\00:51:36.29 Who is a Christian supposed to follow? Jesus! 00:51:37.31\00:51:41.05 Please tell me what verse it was where Jesus spoke in tongues. 00:51:41.08\00:51:45.76 Show me a verse in the Bible where 00:51:45.79\00:51:46.91 Jesus slapped someone on the head and they fell 00:51:46.95\00:51:48.52 down when He healed them. 00:51:48.55\00:51:50.36 I mean I'm not trying to be derogatory now, 00:51:50.39\00:51:53.00 but there's a whole lot of things that are being done 00:51:53.03\00:51:54.83 in Jesus' name now that Jesus didn't endorse, 00:51:54.86\00:51:59.58 and the idea of that, you've got to speak in tongues 00:51:59.61\00:52:02.37 to prove that you got the Holy Spirit is the antithesis of 00:52:02.40\00:52:05.19 what the Bible preaches and yet, I've been at these services 00:52:05.22\00:52:08.15 before where someone is sincere, they come forward, 00:52:08.18\00:52:09.93 and they say, "I want God in my life, I want the Holy Spirit," 00:52:09.96\00:52:12.09 and they say - you've got to speak in tongues, 00:52:12.12\00:52:13.57 and all of my charismatic friends would get around them 00:52:13.60\00:52:16.32 and they would all start to pray and they'd shout 00:52:16.35\00:52:18.59 and they'd beat the drums and they'd lay their hands 00:52:18.62\00:52:20.97 on this person and they'd shake them and sometimes 00:52:21.00\00:52:23.05 they'd even take their hands and push on their diaphragms 00:52:23.08\00:52:25.27 and say, "Do this," and if they didn't start speaking 00:52:25.30\00:52:27.47 in tongues then, then they'd say, "Say halleluiah, 00:52:27.50\00:52:29.74 keep saying halleluiah. 00:52:29.77\00:52:31.01 And they'd go, "Halleluiah, halleluiah" and they'd say, 00:52:31.04\00:52:32.76 "Faster"... Halleluiah, halleluiah 00:52:32.79\00:52:34.37 "Faster, Faster" and they're pushing on 00:52:34.40\00:52:35.74 their stomach and pretty soon their babbling. 00:52:35.77\00:52:38.17 And they'd say, "That's it!" 00:52:38.20\00:52:39.52 I said, "What do you call that." 00:52:39.55\00:52:40.89 "Well, we're priming the pump of the Holy Spirit, 00:52:40.92\00:52:43.45 so that living water can flow." 00:52:43.48\00:52:44.82 They call it "priming the pump." 00:52:44.85\00:52:47.97 Friends! That ain't right! 00:52:48.00\00:52:53.01 And you know what breaks my heart is - I've got friends 00:52:53.04\00:52:55.12 that were sincerely looking for God. 00:52:55.15\00:52:56.68 They went to the service, they tried to speak in tongues, 00:52:56.71\00:52:59.37 and they couldn't and they left dejected. 00:52:59.40\00:53:01.81 They never went back and they said, "You know, I tried 00:53:01.84\00:53:03.36 and I guess God just had rejected me, I couldn't do it." 00:53:03.39\00:53:05.61 They were sincere, they weren't going to fake it. 00:53:05.64\00:53:08.05 And so it didn't happen to them, 00:53:08.36\00:53:09.79 and they turned away from God altogether 00:53:09.82\00:53:13.06 because they couldn't manufacture this 00:53:13.09\00:53:17.84 counterfeit version of tongues. 00:53:17.87\00:53:19.97 That's why I'm preaching it! 00:53:20.00\00:53:21.94 Because I don't want people to be discouraged by this. 00:53:21.97\00:53:24.47 I don't want people to be distracted. 00:53:24.50\00:53:25.64 I don't want you to be confused. 00:53:25.67\00:53:27.83 In the last days... what did I read to you, 00:53:27.86\00:53:29.67 "Every uncouth thing is going to come into the church, 00:53:29.70\00:53:31.82 even among God's people." 00:53:31.85\00:53:33.74 And with the confusion and the bedlam and the cacophony 00:53:33.77\00:53:37.02 and the drums and the dancing, 00:53:37.05\00:53:38.39 all that is going to be coming in. 00:53:38.42\00:53:40.35 And if we're not aware of what the Bible says, 00:53:40.38\00:53:42.97 That God says, "All things should be done decently 00:53:43.00\00:53:45.55 and in order," and whenever you're in doubt about what to do 00:53:45.58\00:53:48.65 ... you do what Jesus did, 00:53:48.68\00:53:50.27 and you're safe, friends. Do you believe that? 00:53:50.31\00:53:52.62 Why does God give us the gift of tongues? 00:53:52.66\00:53:55.91 That we might tell about Jesus. 00:53:55.94\00:53:59.18 And I pray for the gift of tongues, the real gift! 00:53:59.21\00:54:02.48 It just empowers you more and more to be able to 00:54:02.51\00:54:04.54 talk to other people. 00:54:04.57\00:54:06.77 I think I shared with you one time, 00:54:06.80\00:54:08.47 I was driving across Deming, New Mexico, 00:54:08.50\00:54:11.72 I picked up a Mexican hitchhiker who spoke no English. 00:54:11.75\00:54:15.06 I had just prayed God would give me the ability 00:54:15.09\00:54:17.35 to witness to somebody and when I picked up 00:54:17.38\00:54:19.78 this hitchhiker, I thought "That's great!" 00:54:19.81\00:54:21.43 But he didn't understand me! 00:54:21.46\00:54:23.80 I said, "Lord, You got a sense of humor." 00:54:23.83\00:54:27.31 My Spanish back then was you know, 00:54:27.34\00:54:29.05 you could order at a restaurant and that was about it 00:54:29.08\00:54:31.12 in a Spanish restaurant and I prayed. 00:54:31.15\00:54:35.10 I said, "Lord, I need the gift of tongues because 00:54:35.13\00:54:37.62 I was driving from Deming, New Mexico to 00:54:37.65\00:54:39.64 Northern California and it was going to take 00:54:39.67\00:54:41.11 2 days in this old truck and this was going to be a long trip 00:54:41.14\00:54:44.42 I'd like to talk to him about You, Lord. 00:54:44.45\00:54:46.80 He said he wanted to come and do some work for me, 00:54:46.83\00:54:48.60 and I said, "Sure, I got firewood business and" 00:54:48.63\00:54:51.25 You know friends, I don't know how it happened along the way... 00:54:51.28\00:54:53.90 First I started making up words. 00:54:53.93\00:54:56.20 I just thought that in Spanish, you know, you just add 00:54:56.23\00:54:58.74 the word "o" or "a" to an English word and I said, 00:54:58.77\00:55:04.23 "I'm driving my truck-o up to the mountains-o to do work-o, 00:55:04.26\00:55:11.06 and you know, words started coming back to me 00:55:11.09\00:55:13.76 because I had heard some along the way, you know 00:55:13.79\00:55:15.37 I lived in New York City and I went to school with my 00:55:15.40\00:55:17.20 Puerto Rican friends and then I went to school in 00:55:17.23\00:55:19.53 California with my Mexican friends and I went 00:55:19.56\00:55:21.20 to school in Miami with my Cuban friends... 00:55:21.23\00:55:23.36 And somewhere along the way, I heard those things, 00:55:23.39\00:55:25.42 and Jesus said the Holy Spirit will bring things 00:55:25.45\00:55:27.08 to your remembrance and words started coming to me. 00:55:27.11\00:55:29.94 And the next thing I knew, I'm riding down the road 00:55:29.97\00:55:32.18 and I'm saying, "Tu quieres come viv-o conmigo 00:55:32.21\00:55:35.01 and travajo en las montanas, yo cortar lena." 00:55:35.04\00:55:38.29 And he said, "Aye" 00:55:38.32\00:55:40.07 One time, I wanted to know if he was hungry and I said, 00:55:40.10\00:55:42.97 "Tu quieres denaro?"
