telling you a little story.

quickly shared with me that

she was a Christian and
before she dropped me off

on-ramp where I was going,

she said, "My house
is not far from here,

lunch," I thought that would be

very nice...
took me to her home,

fed me a nice
sandwich or something,

and she said, "Now
I need to ask you...

received the Holy Spirit?"

ever asked me that before

I began to worship with a
variety of different churches,

mostly charismatic
churches in Southern California

in Palm Springs that practiced
the speaking of tongues,

the way it is done in about 50%
of the churches in North America

with these
ecstatic utterances...

And I just did not have peace,
even though I had a lot of

friends there, lovely people,
that it was what I was finding

when I read the Bible.

And so, I really delved
into a study on this subject,

and was very
surprised by what I learned.

Now, this is something, I
think we need to address because

it is permeating Christianity.

A misunderstanding of
this doctrine is not only

influencing the one subject
of the one gift of the Spirit,

dealing with tongues, but
a lot that it also involves

is coming into many of the
mainline protestant churches.

Now before we go to our
study, I want you to put on your

seatbelt... the
message today is dealing with

"Understanding Tongues"

This is becoming very
common and pervasive in

not only protestant
but charismatic churches
00:03:20.13\00:03:23.03
across North America.

The message today
dealing with the subject of

understanding tongues,
I thought it was important

to share with you
because elements of these things
00:03:29.48\00:03:33.12
are spreading -
they're becoming more accepted,
00:03:33.15\00:03:36.27
and they're even
coming into our church...

And I think we need
to understand the spirit

behind what's going on here.

Let me read something to you...

Some of you know
about the cuckoo bird...

We've all heard about the
cuckoo bird and cuckoo clocks...

But the cuckoo bird is
known as a brood parasite.

See what they do is - they
don't incubate their own eggs.

What the cuckoo bird will do,

and it's sort of
tragic in nature...

It will go and lay its egg
in the nest of another bird

like a reed-warbler or
something and they even somehow

manage to counterfeit
the look of their egg,

but you can see the cuckoo
bird's egg is much bigger.

But then it's one of the
great tragedies of nature...

When that cuckoo
bird hatches out,

often before the other birds,
it begins to push the other

nest, or even worse still,

it hatches out and it
basically eats all the food

because it's so much
bigger, and here I think,

you've got another picture...

Here you've got a pasture
bird working itself to death

trying to feed this
robust little cuckoo chick

that has starved the
other chicks out of the nest,

and this poor mother doesn't
even realize it's not her egg;

it's not her chick.

It's been introduced -
it's called a "brood parasite."

Counterfeit brought in,
becomes a big distraction,

and the next thing you know,
the other birds are crowded out

while this one bird is stuffed!

The devil has laid an egg
in the church that is being

fed and nourished and
it's displacing the other

gifts of the Spirit, it
becomes a big distraction...

And it becomes a counterfeit
for the real Holy Spirit.

The greatest part of
Christ's true followers

fellowship of other churches.

I believe that God has
true followers in many different

persuasions, but His sheep
are being called out of Babylon.

Babylon gets its name
because man wanted to kind of

make a monument to
himself; it became worship

God confused the languages,

get the word "Babelean"

in Babylon and one of the
primary characteristics of

Babylon is a confusion of
tongues - did you hear that?

I mean, if you can know
anything about prophecy,

one of the things in Babylon
is this confusion of tongues.

confused gifts of the Spirit,

sharing the gospel.

gift... that's the Holy Spirit.

"Tongues" is one of
the gifts of the Spirit,

but it is not the only gift.

The gift of tongues
represents a language.

fulfill the great commission,

she didn't speak Jewish,

but their Jewish

which was sort of a corruption
of German, Russian and Polish.

grandfather, he spoke Russian.

He was Jewish,
didn't speak Hebrew.

The Jews all over the
world today speak the language
