00:11:05.29\00:11:07.10 "I'm not interested in looking at the gold. 00:11:07.13\00:11:10.17 I'm only interested in looking at the tree 00:11:10.20\00:11:13.23 because the tree 00:11:13.27\00:11:14.90 is more precious than the gold." 00:11:14.94\00:11:19.04 And, you know, the Bible has a lot to say about trees 00:11:19.07\00:11:22.61 and they are very, very important. 00:11:22.64\00:11:25.65 Because right in the very first book of the Bible, 00:11:25.68\00:11:30.02 it talks about the tree of life. 00:11:30.05\00:11:32.85 And the tree of knowledge of good and evil. 00:11:32.89\00:11:37.26 And through the Bible, it talks about Abraham 00:11:37.29\00:11:41.10 resting under a great big oak tree. 00:11:41.13\00:11:45.73 And Jesus talks about different types of trees 00:11:45.77\00:11:49.20 and in the very end of the Bible, 00:11:49.24\00:11:50.91 that talks about the tree of life. 00:11:50.94\00:11:54.34 And trees are things that people used to worship 00:11:54.38\00:11:57.88 but God said, "It is a symbol of My strength and My love, 00:11:57.91\00:12:03.22 and it's a symbol of eternal life." 00:12:03.25\00:12:05.79 Because when we get to heaven, 00:12:05.82\00:12:08.19 we will eat from the tree of life. 00:12:08.22\00:12:12.86 And God has given that tree special powers. 00:12:12.89\00:12:16.30 Remember David Douglas, the man who loved trees 00:12:16.33\00:12:21.00 and risked his life to give us beautiful trees. 00:12:21.04\00:12:24.41 Thank you, boys and girls. 00:12:24.44\00:12:26.81 Hello, again. Yes. 00:13:04.91\00:13:06.41 Nebuchadnezzar ruled till he was old, 00:13:06.45\00:13:08.92 his son took over the throne 00:13:08.95\00:13:10.49 and then Nebuchadnezzar's grandson, King Belshazzar 00:13:10.52\00:13:13.56 became co-ruler of the kingdom. 00:13:13.59\00:13:16.12 Belshazzar knew about his grandfather's experience 00:13:16.16\00:13:20.26 of being humbled by God for seven years, 00:13:20.30\00:13:22.90 but he was young, 00:13:22.93\00:13:24.27 self-centered, and rebellious. 00:13:24.30\00:13:26.67 He liked big parties and getting drunk. 00:13:26.70\00:13:29.40 Our story today starts in Daniel 5:1. 00:13:29.44\00:13:34.44 Could you please read that, Bethany? 00:13:34.48\00:13:37.95 Oh, "Belshazzar, 00:13:37.98\00:13:39.81 the king made a great feast for a thousand of his lords 00:13:39.85\00:13:42.98 and drank wine in the presence of the thousand." 00:13:43.02\00:13:46.39 That's not a very upright king, is it? 00:13:46.42\00:13:48.89 But it didn't stop there. 00:13:48.92\00:13:51.06 In drunk and defiance of God, King Belshazzar commanded 00:13:51.09\00:13:54.36 that the gold and silver vessels taken 00:13:54.40\00:13:56.50 from the temple in Jerusalem by King Nebuchadnezzar 00:13:56.53\00:13:59.73 to be brought out. 00:13:59.77\00:14:01.20 They put intoxicating wine into the holy temple vessels. 00:14:01.24\00:14:05.24 Belshazzar, his lords, his wives, 00:14:05.27\00:14:07.28 and his concubines all drank from them 00:14:07.31\00:14:09.91 and mocked God by praising the god of gold and silver, 00:14:09.94\00:14:13.72 bronze, iron, wood, and stone. 00:14:13.75\00:14:16.35 Now, that was an act which forced God to respond. 00:14:16.38\00:14:20.89 Let's see what our torchlight, Mrs. White's book 00:14:20.92\00:14:23.56 Prophets and Kings, page 530 shines on this. 00:14:23.59\00:14:28.00 Would you please read that, Caleb? 00:14:28.03\00:14:29.56 Sure. 00:14:29.60\00:14:33.13 "In that last night of mad folly, 00:14:33.17\00:14:35.54 Belshazzar and his lords had filled up 00:14:35.57\00:14:37.87 the measure of their guilt 00:14:37.91\00:14:39.61 and the guilt of the Chaldean kingdom. 00:14:39.64\00:14:42.11 No longer could God's restraining hand ward 00:14:42.14\00:14:45.08 off the impending evil. 00:14:45.11\00:14:47.98 Through manifold providences, 00:14:48.02\00:14:50.65 God had sought to teach them reverence for His law." 00:14:50.69\00:14:54.46 Then a really scary thing happened. 00:14:54.49\00:14:57.86 Bryce, could you please read about that in verse 5? 00:14:57.89\00:15:03.37 "In the same hour the fingers of a man's hand appeared 00:15:03.40\00:15:06.23 and wrote opposite the lampstand 00:15:06.27\00:15:08.10 on the plaster of the wall of the king's palace, 00:15:08.14\00:15:11.47 and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote." 00:15:11.51\00:15:14.34 God sent King Belshazzar, a text message 00:15:14.38\00:15:17.15 written on the wall with a bloodless hand. 00:15:17.18\00:15:20.28 What a party stopper. 00:15:20.32\00:15:21.98 You can see from our picture here 00:15:22.02\00:15:23.35 that it certainly would have given everyone a fright. 00:15:23.39\00:15:26.32 Can you read that in verse 6, Chemiah? 00:15:26.35\00:15:32.46 "Then the king's countenance changed, 00:15:32.49\00:15:34.46 and his thoughts troubled him, 00:15:34.50\00:15:36.46 so that the joints of his hips were loosened, 00:15:36.50\00:15:39.00 and his knees knocked against each other." 00:15:39.03\00:15:43.77 Can you imagine that? 00:15:43.81\00:15:45.57 The king's knees knocking together. 00:15:45.61\00:15:47.68 He was really scared. 00:15:47.71\00:15:49.44 He screamed for those useless astrologers, 00:15:49.48\00:15:51.98 Chaldeans and soothsayers 00:15:52.01\00:15:53.85 and offered them a purple robe, a gold chain, 00:15:53.88\00:15:56.82 and even a third place in the kingdom 00:15:56.85\00:15:58.99 if they could interpret the writing on the wall. 00:15:59.02\00:16:01.79 But do you think they could? 00:16:01.82\00:16:03.56 No! No, they couldn't. 00:16:03.59\00:16:06.36 Panic broke out. 00:16:06.39\00:16:07.86 They were drunk and screams of terror, 00:16:07.90\00:16:09.66 as the letters glowed larger and brighter 00:16:09.70\00:16:12.23 so much so that the queen mother heard about it 00:16:12.27\00:16:14.70 and came into the banquet hall to try to settle the situation. 00:16:14.74\00:16:18.94 She told Belshazzar to call Daniel in. 00:16:18.97\00:16:21.71 So Daniel was brought in before the king. 00:16:21.74\00:16:24.81 The king had heard about 00:16:24.85\00:16:26.41 Daniel's ability to interpret dreams 00:16:26.45\00:16:28.52 in relation to his grandfather King Nebuchadnezzar. 00:16:28.55\00:16:32.22 Jireh, will you please read 00:16:32.25\00:16:34.22 what the king said to Daniel in verse 16? 00:16:34.26\00:16:39.66 "And I have heard of you, that you can give 00:16:39.69\00:16:43.13 interpretations and explain enigmas. 00:16:43.16\00:16:47.87 Now if you can read the writing 00:16:47.90\00:16:49.70 and make known to me its interpretation, 00:16:49.74\00:16:52.91 you shall be clothed with purple 00:16:52.94\00:16:54.84 and have a chain of gold around your neck, 00:16:54.88\00:16:56.95 and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom." 00:16:56.98\00:17:00.42 Daniel had a reputation for solving mysteries, 00:17:00.45\00:17:03.18 riddles, and puzzles. 00:17:03.22\00:17:04.95 That's what explaining enigmas means. 00:17:04.99\00:17:07.66 Daniel was an elderly man at this point. 00:17:07.69\00:17:10.33 He had been in Babylon for nearly 70 years, 00:17:10.36\00:17:13.76 and he remained faithful to God amidst all the attractions 00:17:13.80\00:17:17.60 and luxurious lifestyles of the palace court. 00:17:17.63\00:17:21.14 According to historians, 00:17:21.17\00:17:22.64 Belshazzar was co-ruler of Babylon with his father. 00:17:22.67\00:17:26.68 So do you think Daniel was excited about 00:17:26.71\00:17:29.94 being made the third ruler in the kingdom? 00:17:29.98\00:17:32.51 No! 00:17:32.55\00:17:34.25 Let's find out. 00:17:34.28\00:17:35.62 Sai, can you please read about that in verse 17? 00:17:35.65\00:17:40.32 "Then Daniel answered and said before the king, 00:17:40.36\00:17:43.99 'Let your gifts be for yourself, 00:17:44.03\00:17:46.09 and give your rewards to another, 00:17:46.13\00:17:49.80 yet I will read the writing to the king, 00:17:49.83\00:17:52.60 and make known to him the interpretation.'" 00:17:52.63\00:17:56.60 Daniel told the king that he could keep his gifts 00:17:56.64\00:17:59.71 and went to give him a family history lesson. 00:17:59.74\00:18:02.54 Aunty Leah, could you please read that in verses 18-20? 00:18:02.58\00:18:05.78 Yes. 00:18:05.81\00:18:07.15 "O king, the Most High God 00:18:07.18\00:18:09.05 gave Nebuchadnezzar your father a kingdom, 00:18:09.08\00:18:11.65 and majesty, glory, and honor. 00:18:11.69\00:18:14.02 And because of the majesty that He gave him, 00:18:14.06\00:18:16.49 all peoples, nations, and languages trembled 00:18:16.52\00:18:19.29 and feared before him. 00:18:19.33\00:18:20.93 Whomever he wished, he executed, 00:18:20.96\00:18:23.26 whomever he wished, he kept alive, 00:18:23.30\00:18:25.53 whomever he wished, he set up, 00:18:25.57\00:18:27.64 and whomever he wished, he put down. 00:18:27.67\00:18:29.97 But when his heart was lifted up, 00:18:30.01\00:18:31.81 and his spirit was hardened in pride, 00:18:31.84\00:18:34.08 he was deposed from his kingly throne, 00:18:34.11\00:18:36.31 and they took his glory from him." 00:18:36.34\00:18:39.31 And, Bethany, could you please read verse 21? 00:18:39.35\00:18:43.82 "Then he was driven from the sons of men, 00:18:43.85\00:18:46.05 his heart was made like the beasts, 00:18:46.09\00:18:47.86 and his dwelling was with the wild donkeys. 00:18:47.89\00:18:50.39 They fed him grass like oxen, 00:18:50.43\00:18:52.39 and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, 00:18:52.43\00:18:54.76 till he knew that the Most High God 00:18:54.80\00:18:56.40 rules in the kingdom of men, 00:18:56.43\00:18:57.97 and appoints over it whomever He chooses." 00:18:58.00\00:19:00.64 Then Daniel gave Belshazzar addressing down in verse 22. 00:19:00.67\00:19:05.14 He accused Belshazzar of refusing 00:19:05.17\00:19:07.18 to humble his heart, 00:19:07.21\00:19:08.54 even though he knew of all the supernatural things 00:19:08.58\00:19:11.11 that had happened to his grandfather, 00:19:11.15\00:19:12.88 King Nebuchadnezzar. 00:19:12.91\00:19:14.58 Caleb, could you please read verse 23 00:19:14.62\00:19:17.09 where Daniel continues to rebuke Belshazzar? 00:19:17.12\00:19:20.12 Sure. 00:19:20.16\00:19:21.72 "And you have lifted yourself up 00:19:21.76\00:19:24.29 against the Lord of heaven. 00:19:24.33\00:19:26.03 They have brought the vessels of His house before you, 00:19:26.06\00:19:29.63 and you and your lords, and your wives, 00:19:29.66\00:19:31.60 and your concubines, have drunk wine from them. 00:19:31.63\00:19:34.77 And you have praised the gods of silver and gold, 00:19:34.80\00:19:38.07 bronze and iron, wood and stone, 00:19:38.11\00:19:40.71 which do not see or hear or know. 00:19:40.74\00:19:43.18 And the God who holds your breath in His hands 00:19:43.21\00:19:45.98 and owns all your ways, you have not glorified." 00:19:46.01\00:19:49.28 Daniel told Belshazzar 00:19:49.32\00:19:51.05 that the fingers of the hand was sent from God 00:19:51.09\00:19:54.12 as a direct result of his God defying behavior. 00:19:54.16\00:19:57.63 Verse 25 tells us that this mysterious bloodless hand 00:19:57.66\00:20:01.03 write the words "MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN." 00:20:01.06\00:20:05.33 Then Daniel gave the interpretation. 00:20:05.37\00:20:07.84 Daniel uses the word "PERES" in his explanation. 00:20:07.87\00:20:10.97 This is the singular form of the word "UPHARSIN." 00:20:11.01\00:20:14.98 Bryce, could you please read the next two verses, 00:20:15.01\00:20:18.41 verses 26-28? 00:20:18.45\00:20:23.49 "This is the interpretation of each word. 00:20:23.52\00:20:25.82 MENE: God has numbered your kingdom, 00:20:25.85\00:20:27.86 and finished it. 00:20:27.89\00:20:29.22 TEKEL: You have been weighed in the balances, 00:20:29.26\00:20:31.03 and found wanting. 00:20:31.06\00:20:32.46 PERES: Your kingdom has been divided, 00:20:32.49\00:20:35.20 and given to the Medes and Persians." 00:20:35.23\00:20:37.27 So as promised, 00:20:37.30\00:20:38.63 Belshazzar commanded that Daniel be clothed with purple, 00:20:38.67\00:20:42.17 with a gold chain around his neck. 00:20:42.20\00:20:44.34 And he proclaimed Daniel, the third ruler in the kingdom. 00:20:44.37\00:20:47.71 The only problem was 00:20:47.74\00:20:49.28 that the kingdom didn't even last that night. 00:20:49.31\00:20:52.81 As Daniel was explaining 00:20:52.85\00:20:54.28 the mysterious writing on the wall, 00:20:54.32\00:20:56.02 the Medes and Persians were already at work 00:20:56.05\00:20:58.69 diverting River Euphrates 00:20:58.72\00:21:00.89 which ran through Babylon wine opening in the wall. 00:21:00.92\00:21:04.06 Cyrus marched his soldiers up the drained riverbed 00:21:04.09\00:21:07.10 and through the huge metal river gates 00:21:07.13\00:21:09.03 that had been accidentally left open. 00:21:09.06\00:21:11.57 Amazingly Cyrus's ability to enter Babylon 00:21:11.60\00:21:14.80 because the gates were left open that night 00:21:14.84\00:21:17.34 was prophesied around 150 years earlier by the Prophet Isaiah. 00:21:17.37\00:21:22.94 So we know that God was in control 00:21:22.98\00:21:25.38 as Cyrus conquered Babylon. 00:21:25.41\00:21:27.52 You can read about that in Isaiah 45:1-5. 00:21:27.55\00:21:32.09 Chemiah, can you please tell us 00:21:32.12\00:21:33.86 what happened next in verses 30-31? 00:21:33.89\00:21:40.30 "That very night Belshazzar, 00:21:40.33\00:21:41.90 king of the Chaldeans, was slain. 00:21:41.93\00:21:44.93 And..." 00:21:44.97\00:21:47.00 Darius. 00:21:47.04\00:21:48.40 "Darius the Mede received the kingdom, 00:21:48.44\00:21:51.21 being about 62 years old." 00:21:51.24\00:21:54.88 Let's turn to Proverbs 16:18. 00:21:54.91\00:21:59.01 And read our memory verse together. 00:21:59.05\00:22:01.38 This is a warning about pride. 00:22:01.42\00:22:03.79 It also talks about a haughty spirit 00:22:03.82\00:22:06.52 which means being conceited, stuck up, or snobbish. 00:22:06.55\00:22:10.46 Are we ready to do that?
