Aw, that would be wonderful! 00:04:40.64\00:04:42.78 Can't wait! God is SO good! 00:04:42.81\00:04:45.01 And I can see that Pastor Rick has joined us. 00:04:45.05\00:04:47.15 Thanks Pastor Rick, you are such a blessing to us! 00:04:47.18\00:04:49.98 And I'm just so glad to be with you. 00:04:50.02\00:04:52.45 Children, I hear you're going to be learning 00:04:52.49\00:04:54.56 about David and Goliath. 00:04:54.59\00:04:55.92 Now when I was little, I think I remember David 00:04:55.96\00:04:58.19 was the little guy; Goliath was the big man, 00:04:58.23\00:05:01.16 but the Lord helped David win the battle, is that true? Yes. 00:05:01.20\00:05:05.30 So let's sing about that, "Only a Boy Named David." 00:05:05.33\00:05:07.60 Pastor Rick, can we please sing "The Family of God?" 00:05:57.42\00:06:01.06 It's a lovely song too, isn't it? 00:06:01.09\00:06:02.76 Boy, we sing some good songs here. 00:06:02.79\00:06:05.16 Yes we can - "The Family of God." 00:06:05.19\00:06:08.23 Pastor Rick, can we please sing "God is My Best Friend?" 00:07:04.72\00:07:07.86 Only if God is your best friend. We can do it! Yes! 00:07:07.89\00:07:12.96 Thanks Pastor Rick, we really 00:08:25.77\00:08:27.37 enjoy these happy songs together. 00:08:27.40\00:08:30.01 Now, who is our favorite storyteller? 00:08:30.04\00:08:33.71 Doctor John! Yes! 00:08:33.74\00:08:36.91 Well let's go and see what story he has for us today. 00:08:36.95\00:08:41.25 Hello boys and girls, I'm Dr. John and welcome to story time. 00:08:41.28\00:08:45.45 And all the other boys and girls watching, 00:08:45.49\00:08:47.72 we're glad you are here too. 00:08:47.76\00:08:49.42 Many years ago, over 100 years ago, a handsome, young man 00:08:49.86\00:08:55.30 met a beautiful, young girl at Avondale College, 00:08:55.33\00:08:59.03 and his name was Norman and her name was Irma, 00:08:59.07\00:09:03.20 and they got married. 00:09:03.24\00:09:04.84 And they were asked if they would go to the worst 00:09:04.87\00:09:09.44 island in the worst country in the whole world 00:09:09.48\00:09:13.72 because the cannibals were so awful and so cruel, 00:09:13.75\00:09:17.95 but they agreed to go and off they went to Malekula. 00:09:17.99\00:09:23.12 Well they worked there so faithfully with all these 00:09:23.16\00:09:26.13 cannibals around them and unfortunately Norman got sick. 00:09:26.16\00:09:31.17 He died of blackwater fever and 00:09:31.20\00:09:34.97 Mrs. Wiles had to dig his own grave for him, 00:09:35.00\00:09:39.31 and then she had to bury him and had to guard the grave 00:09:39.34\00:09:44.05 because the cannibals wanted to dig him up and eat him. 00:09:44.08\00:09:49.48 And, you know, she finally left, she was a wonderful lady, 00:09:49.52\00:09:52.45 I met her and another missionary came - his name was 00:09:52.49\00:09:57.13 Will, "Will Smith" and his family. 00:09:57.16\00:10:00.33 And they lived in a little house 00:10:00.36\00:10:02.70 right near where the "Wiles" used to live. 00:10:02.73\00:10:05.40 And nearby was a horrible cannibal, 00:10:05.43\00:10:08.70 and his name was "Ool." 00:10:08.74\00:10:11.41 Ool had been married several times - he killed his first wife 00:10:11.44\00:10:14.94 because she left the pig out in the rain. 00:10:14.98\00:10:18.81 And every day, he would go to another village, 00:10:18.85\00:10:22.95 he would capture somebody and kill them and he'd 00:10:22.98\00:10:26.02 bring the body home and he'd say to his wife, 00:10:26.05\00:10:28.52 "Lahari," cook this for me! 00:10:28.56\00:10:31.06 Make a stew, make a roast, and then he was running out 00:10:31.09\00:10:36.43 of food and he said, "That missionary, Pastor Smith, 00:10:36.46\00:10:41.60 mmm, yum, yum, I'm going to kill him and eat him." 00:10:41.64\00:10:47.04 And then his son, Dick, said, "Don't go there because 00:10:47.08\00:10:54.42 the angels guard." 00:10:54.45\00:10:55.92 "What do you mean?" 00:10:55.95\00:10:58.05 He went off and he had a look, there were no angels. 00:10:58.09\00:11:00.62 He said, "You didn't go at the right time." 00:11:00.66\00:11:03.09 "You go at nighttime and you will see the angels." 00:11:03.12\00:11:06.86 So late that night, it was the darkest time of the month, 00:11:06.90\00:11:10.43 and he was so black and he crept along and he saw 00:11:10.47\00:11:14.37 this "glow" through the trees and he got closer, 00:11:14.40\00:11:18.17 and what he saw looked like this - "Angels with swords, 00:11:18.21\00:11:24.81 very, very bright," but they were standing so close together, 00:11:24.85\00:11:29.62 right around the house, they couldn't get in. 00:11:29.65\00:11:35.42 He came back the next night. 00:11:35.46\00:11:36.79 He said, "Oh, he's got strong people looking after him." 00:11:36.83\00:11:42.80 And he kept on asking his wife to cook him flesh, 00:11:42.83\00:11:47.34 and finally, Lahari said, "I'm going to leave you. 00:11:47.37\00:11:50.54 I'm going to go and live next to Pastor Smith 00:11:50.57\00:11:54.68 because he has the big angels guarding him." 00:11:54.71\00:11:57.81 "I don't want you to go." 00:11:57.88\00:11:59.85 She said, "I'm going because 00:11:59.88\00:12:01.78 I cannot cook for you any longer." 00:12:01.82\00:12:05.22 You know, "Ool," he came along because he was hungry, 00:12:05.25\00:12:09.56 and that night when he sat down to eat instead of 00:12:09.59\00:12:13.56 meat with a flesh fork, it was sweet potatoes and yam, 00:12:13.60\00:12:21.30 stuck the fork in - didn't taste very nice because 00:12:21.37\00:12:27.44 he was used to eating human flesh - because it was an 00:12:27.48\00:12:33.55 addiction and they liked it so much they would keep on eating. 00:12:33.58\00:12:36.92 And finally he said, "If I come, will the angels 00:12:36.95\00:12:42.06 look after me as well?" 00:12:42.09\00:12:43.59 "You must stop eating human flesh," and he stopped. 00:12:43.63\00:12:49.80 He got sick later and as he was dying, he said, 00:12:49.83\00:12:53.60 "Please bury me inside the ring of angels and don't 00:12:53.64\00:12:58.74 put me back in the skull house where all the devils are 00:12:58.77\00:13:02.58 because I know that any missionary with angels 00:13:02.61\00:13:07.35 that stand in a ring around his house must be good for him." 00:13:07.38\00:13:11.55 And you know, he died and Dick, his son, who had been a 00:13:11.59\00:13:17.63 cannibal, he went and studied and he became Pastor Dick. 00:13:17.66\00:13:23.70 And he became a black missionary on the island 00:13:23.73\00:13:27.24 of Malekula - the worst island, in the worst country 00:13:27.27\00:13:32.37 where the devil was the strongest, 00:13:32.41\00:13:35.44 and had the people in his grip - God sent missionaries 00:13:35.48\00:13:39.15 like Pastor and Mrs. Wiles and Pastor and Mrs. Smith 00:13:39.18\00:13:42.55 and the people became converted 00:13:42.58\00:13:45.85 and the devil lost. Thank you boys and girls. 00:13:45.89\00:13:49.52 Hi girls and boys, welcome to our Bible study! 00:13:50.56\00:13:53.36 If you haven't got your Bibles ready yet, 00:13:53.40\00:13:55.23 go get them now so you can follow along with us. 00:13:55.26\00:13:57.73 Bethany, would you like to say a prayer for us please? Yep. 00:13:57.77\00:14:00.87 Dear Father... Thank You for the opportunity of 00:14:00.90\00:14:04.81 being able to open our Bibles and read Your word. 00:14:04.84\00:14:07.64 Please help us to understand what we read. 00:14:07.68\00:14:10.18 We ask you to bless the children who are watching 00:14:10.21\00:14:12.78 us at home. In Jesus name... Amen. 00:14:12.81\00:14:15.08 Amen. Thank you Bethany. 00:14:15.12\00:14:16.89 Now Matthew, we had an interesting study last Sabbath, 00:14:16.92\00:14:19.25 what was that about? 00:14:19.29\00:14:20.62 That Saul disobeyed God. Yes he did. 00:14:20.66\00:14:23.53 And do you know what, today, we're going to 00:14:23.56\00:14:26.16 read about a person that Samuel said would overtake 00:14:26.19\00:14:30.73 Saul's position as king. 00:14:30.77\00:14:32.73 Samuel was instructed to go to Bethlehem to anoint 00:14:32.77\00:14:35.84 a new king, so when Samuel arrived at Bethlehem, 00:14:35.87\00:14:39.41 he invited the elders and Jesse and his sons to the sacrifice. 00:14:39.44\00:14:43.71 Matthew, can you please read 1 Samuel 16:6-7 and 10. 00:14:43.75\00:14:49.28 "So it was, when they came, that he looked at Eliab 00:14:50.99\00:14:54.52 and said, "Surely the Lord's anointed is before Him!" 00:14:54.56\00:14:58.03 But the Lord said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance 00:14:58.06\00:15:01.26 or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. 00:15:01.30\00:15:04.80 For the Lord does not see as man sees; 00:15:04.83\00:15:07.70 for man looks at the outward appearance, 00:15:07.74\00:15:09.47 but the Lord looks at the heart." 00:15:09.50\00:15:11.24 Thus Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. 00:15:11.27\00:15:14.64 And Samuel said to Jesse, "The Lord has not chosen these." 00:15:14.68\00:15:18.45 Thanks Matthew. 00:15:18.48\00:15:20.68 So none that the seven sons of Jesse were the ones God chose. 00:15:20.72\00:15:24.25 Samuel asked Jesse if he had another son. 00:15:24.29\00:15:27.86 Jesse told Samuel that there is a younger son 00:15:27.89\00:15:31.16 not present but out in the field minding the sheep. 00:15:31.19\00:15:34.20 Samuel asks him to go get him. 00:15:34.23\00:15:37.40 Let's continue reading. 00:15:37.43\00:15:38.77 Bethany, can you read 1 Samuel 16:12-13? Yep. 00:15:38.80\00:15:44.01 "So he sent and brought him in. 00:15:44.04\00:15:45.81 Now he was ruddy, with bright eyes, and good-looking. 00:15:45.84\00:15:50.58 And the Lord said, "Arise, anoint him; 00:15:50.61\00:15:52.88 for this is the one!" 00:15:52.91\00:15:54.28 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the 00:15:54.32\00:15:58.09 midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord 00:15:58.12\00:16:01.22 came upon David from that day forward. 00:16:01.26\00:16:03.36 So Samuel arose and went to Ramah." Thanks Bethany. 00:16:03.43\00:16:07.10 So Samuel anoints David. 00:16:07.13\00:16:09.26 Now Samuel wanted to anoint Jesse's oldest son, Eliab, 00:16:09.30\00:16:12.30 because he looked like Saul, very tall and handsome. 00:16:12.33\00:16:16.04 But this time, God wanted a man after His own heart. 00:16:16.07\00:16:20.91 Okay, now the Philistines wanted to go out and make 00:16:20.94\00:16:24.51 war with the Israelites, let's see what happens. 00:16:24.55\00:16:27.02 J. J., can you please read 1 Samuel 17:3-7. Yes. 00:16:27.05\00:16:31.75 "The Philistines stood on a mountain on one side, 00:16:31.79\00:16:34.72 and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side, 00:16:34.76\00:16:38.06 with a valley between them. 00:16:38.09\00:16:39.93 And a champion went out from the camp of the Philistines, 00:16:39.96\00:16:44.13 named Goliath, from Gath, 00:16:44.17\00:16:46.00 whose height was six cubits and a span. 00:16:46.03\00:16:48.90 He had a bronze helmet on his head, and he was armed 00:16:48.94\00:16:52.64 with a coat of mail, and the weight of the coat 00:16:52.67\00:16:56.21 was 5,000 shekels of bronze. 00:16:56.24\00:16:58.68 And he had bronze armor on his legs and a bronze 00:16:58.71\00:17:02.95 javelin between his shoulders. 00:17:02.98\00:17:05.15 Now the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam, 00:17:05.19\00:17:08.52 and his iron spearhead weighed 600 shekels; and a 00:17:08.56\00:17:13.66 shield-bearer went before him." 00:17:13.70\00:17:15.66 Wow, thanks J. J. 00:17:15.70\00:17:18.33 So the Philistines had a giant working for them. 00:17:18.37\00:17:21.70 His name was Goliath. 00:17:21.74\00:17:23.37 Now we just read that Goliath was 6 cubits and a span tall. 00:17:23.41\00:17:27.78 Now a cubit is 18 inches and a span is half a cubit. 00:17:27.81\00:17:32.75 So when you work it out, it all adds up to 117 inches, 00:17:32.78\00:17:38.25 which in our measurement is 297 centimeters tall. 00:17:38.29\00:17:42.66 That's nearly 3 meters. 00:17:42.69\00:17:45.23 And boys and girls, guess what? 00:17:45.26\00:17:47.66 We have a replica of Goliath in our lounge room. 00:17:47.70\00:17:52.53 He is very big. 00:17:52.57\00:17:53.94 Now J. J., I want you to go and stand up against Goliath 00:17:53.97\00:17:57.77 to show the girls and boys at home how big this giant was. 00:17:57.81\00:18:01.78 Off you go - he was a big man! Well done! 00:18:01.81\00:18:07.12 There you go! Thanks J. J. 00:18:07.15\00:18:10.05 You can come and sit back down now. 00:18:10.09\00:18:12.89 Okay, so let's see what Goliath 00:18:12.92\00:18:15.39 was yelling out to the Israelites. 00:18:15.42\00:18:16.93 Aunt Cecily, can you please read 1 Samuel 17:10-11 and 16. 00:18:16.96\00:18:23.37 "And the Philistine said, "I defy the armies of Israel 00:18:23.40\00:18:27.80 this day. Give me a man that we may fight together. 00:18:27.84\00:18:31.81 When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, 00:18:31.84\00:18:36.01 They were dismayed and greatly afraid. 00:18:36.04\00:18:39.75 And the Philistine drew near and presented himself 00:18:39.78\00:18:42.85 40 days morning and evening." 00:18:42.88\00:18:45.45 Oh, so for 40 days, every morning and every evening, 00:18:45.49\00:18:51.69 Goliath came out and repeated this speech... 00:18:51.73\00:18:54.93 And verse 11 tells us the Israelites were very afraid! 00:18:54.96\00:18:59.03 Now David's three older brothers had gone up with Saul 00:18:59.07\00:19:02.10 to fight the Philistines and David's father asked David 00:19:02.14\00:19:05.07 to take some food supplies to them. 00:19:05.11\00:19:06.84 When David arrives, he hears the ranting and raving of 00:19:06.88\00:19:10.51 Goliath challenging Israel. 00:19:10.55\00:19:12.58 Let see what David says. 00:19:12.61\00:19:13.95 Anna, can you please read 1 Samuel 17:26. 00:19:13.98\00:19:18.99 "Then David spoke to the men who stood by him saying, 00:19:19.02\00:19:22.42 "What shall be done for the men who kills this Philistine 00:19:22.46\00:19:25.79 and takes away the reproach from Israel? 00:19:25.83\00:19:28.96 For who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should 00:19:29.00\00:19:32.20 defy the armies of the living God?" 00:19:32.23\00:19:34.27 Umm, thanks Anna. 00:19:34.30\00:19:35.70 Now if we were to read on, it was reported to Saul 00:19:35.74\00:19:38.47 what David said and he called for him. Let's see what happens. 00:19:38.51\00:19:41.74 Matthew, can you please read 1 Samuel 17:32-33 and 36. 00:19:41.78\00:19:47.78 "Then David said to Saul, "Let no man's heart fail because 00:19:47.82\00:19:51.99 of him; your servant will go and fight with this Philistine." 00:19:52.02\00:19:55.22 And Saul said to David, "You are not able to go against 00:19:55.26\00:19:58.99 this Philistine to fight with him; for you are a youth, 00:19:59.03\00:20:02.13 and he a man of war from his youth." 00:20:02.16\00:20:04.07 "Your servant has killed both lion and bear; and this 00:20:04.10\00:20:08.90 uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, 00:20:08.94\00:20:13.41 seeing he had defied the armies of the living God." 00:20:13.44\00:20:16.51 Wow, so David is telling Saul he has killed lions and bears, 00:20:16.54\00:20:21.08 and just as the Lord delivered him from these animals, 00:20:21.12\00:20:24.25 God will also deliver him from giants. 00:20:24.29\00:20:26.92 Do you think David had faith? Yes! 00:20:26.96\00:20:29.56 Oh I think he did and you look at the size of that giant, 00:20:29.59\00:20:32.33 I think he had a big faith. 00:20:32.36\00:20:34.76 Well, David was so indignant that someone 00:20:34.80\00:20:38.23 would make fun of his God, Saul finally agreed 00:20:38.27\00:20:41.84 that David could go fight the giant, 00:20:41.87\00:20:44.11 and he put his armor on David, but do you know what? 00:20:44.14\00:20:47.01 David couldn't walk in all that armor. 00:20:47.04\00:20:49.51 So he took it off and let's see what happens. 00:20:49.54\00:20:51.71 Bethany, can you please read 1 Samuel 17:40-43? Yep. 00:20:51.75\00:20:57.95 "Then he took his staff in his hand; and he chose 00:20:57.99\00:21:02.22 for himself five smooth stones from the brook, 00:21:02.26\00:21:05.39 and put them in a shepherd's bag, in a pouch 00:21:05.43\00:21:08.36 which he had, and his sling was in his hand. 00:21:08.40\00:21:11.53 And he drew near to the Philistine. 00:21:11.57\00:21:13.44 So the Philistine came, and began drawing near to David, 00:21:13.47\00:21:17.07 and the man who bore the shield went before him. 00:21:17.11\00:21:19.67 And when the Philistine looked about and saw David, 00:21:19.71\00:21:23.24 he disdained him; for he was only a youth, 00:21:23.28\00:21:25.91 ruddy and good-looking. 00:21:25.95\00:21:28.38 So the Philistine said to David, "Am I a dog, that you come 00:21:28.42\00:21:32.15 to me with sticks?" 00:21:32.19\00:21:33.52 And the Philistine cursed David by his gods." 00:21:33.56\00:21:36.29 Umm, so Goliath is not happy that such a young man 00:21:36.32\00:21:38.83 would dare come out and fight him, and he cursed him. 00:21:38.86\00:21:42.03 Let's see what David says. 00:21:42.06\00:21:43.47 Kate, can you read 1 Samuel 17:45 and then 49-50. 00:21:43.50\00:21:51.71 "Then David said to the Philistine, "You come to me 00:21:51.74\00:21:57.01 with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, 00:21:57.05\00:22:00.58 but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, 00:22:00.62\00:22:03.35 the God of the armies of Israel whom you have defied." 00:22:03.39\00:22:07.56 Then David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone 00:22:07.59\00:22:12.79 and he slung it and struck the Philistine in his forehead 00:22:12.83\00:22:16.97 so that the stone sank into his forehead and he fell on 00:22:17.00\00:22:20.34 his face to the earth. 00:22:20.37\00:22:21.70 So David prevailed over the Philistine 00:22:21.74\00:22:24.64 with a sling and a stone and struck the Philistine 00:22:24.67\00:22:27.78 and killed him, but there was no sword in the hand of David." 00:22:27.81\00:22:32.05 Hmm, so David took that giant 00:22:32.08\00:22:35.15 Goliath down with just a slingshot. 00:22:35.18\00:22:38.39 If we were to read on, David used Goliath's sword and 00:22:38.42\00:22:41.62 cut off his head and the Philistines 00:22:41.66\00:22:44.43 fled with the Israelites in pursuit. 00:22:44.46\00:22:47.76 So after this victory, Saul would not let David 00:22:47.80\00:22:50.97 return home to his father, but kept him in the palace. 00:22:51.00\00:22:54.80 Let's read what happens. 00:22:54.84\00:22:56.17 Caleb, can you please read 1 Samuel 18:3-4. 00:22:56.20\00:23:00.61 "Then Jonathan and David made a covenant because 00:23:00.64\00:23:04.75 he loved him as his own soul. 00:23:04.78\00:23:06.82 And Jonathan took off the robe that was on him and gave it 00:23:06.85\00:23:10.39 to David with his armor, even to 00:23:10.42\00:23:13.66 his sword and his bow and and his belt." Thanks Caleb. 00:23:13.69\00:23:18.29 So Jonathan, Saul's son, and David formed a very 00:23:18.33\00:23:22.26 special friendship and bond and this got orchestrated 00:23:22.30\00:23:25.53 so Jonathan could keep David safe. 00:23:25.57\00:23:28.50 Now do you know, after all these things that happened, 00:23:28.54\00:23:31.91 Saul became very jealous because, you know what, 00:23:31.94\00:23:34.54 after David killed that giant, do you think he became popular? 00:23:34.58\00:23:37.28 Yes, he did and Saul became very jealous and he was angry. 00:23:37.31\00:23:42.75 Do you know what Saul is really saying that David 00:23:42.78\00:23:46.19 is making Saul look bad. 00:23:46.22\00:23:48.49 Let's look at our torch light and Bethany, 00:23:48.52\00:23:51.49 could you please read that for us? 00:23:51.53\00:23:53.40 "The people were not slow to see that David was 00:23:55.60\00:23:58.83 a competent person and that the affairs entrusted 00:23:58.87\00:24:02.80 to his hands were managed with wisdom and skill. 00:24:02.84\00:24:06.24 The counsels of the young man were of a wise 00:24:06.27\00:24:10.65 and discreet character, and proved to be safe to follow. 00:24:10.68\00:24:14.22 While the judgment of Saul was at times unreliable 00:24:14.25\00:24:17.12 and his decisions were not wise. Thanks Bethany. 00:24:17.15\00:24:20.19 Let's all go to our memory verse now, found in Proverbs 9:10. 00:24:20.22\00:24:24.06 So having fear of the Lord means having love and 00:24:36.00\00:24:38.44 respect for God and being obedient. 00:24:38.47\00:24:41.14 This verse is telling us... if we do this, 00:24:41.18\00:24:44.18 God will bless us with wisdom. 00:24:44.21\00:24:46.85 Thank you boys and girls for reading along with us. 00:24:46.88\00:24:49.22 We have a devotional available that goes into more depth 00:24:49.25\00:24:52.15 on what we've studied today, here's how you can get that. 00:24:52.19\00:24:55.79 Hey boys and girls!
