Well, this is the last of our series of programs. 00:00:01.98\00:00:09.48 Sort of seems a pity it all has to end, doesn't it? 00:00:09.51\00:00:12.87 because this has been more than just a presentation of history 00:00:12.88\00:00:18.77 and geography. Its really the presentation of a message-a 00:00:18.80\00:00:23.74 message which I believe. I believe the bible. 00:00:23.77\00:00:25.97 I believe its message. And now we come to the last of the 00:00:26.00\00:00:30.86 programs and maybe its the best. Its a story of Petra, 00:00:30.89\00:00:36.85 the rose red city, half as old as time. 2000 years ago 00:00:36.88\00:00:43.34 Petra was a fabulously wealthy city. And people everywhere 00:00:43.35\00:00:51.84 knew about Petra. It boasted of its independence. 00:00:51.87\00:00:57.14 and prosperity. But all this came to the ears of the Romans 00:00:57.17\00:01:02.17 who were interested in wealth. And in the year 106 A. D. 00:01:02.20\00:01:07.42 Roman legions fought their way into the valley and conquered 00:01:07.45\00:01:12.18 and occupied Petra. They built a beautiful road right through 00:01:12.21\00:01:16.70 the center of the city. And the emperor, Trajan, had a 00:01:16.73\00:01:21.81 gateway erected to commemorate the victory. And under Rome 00:01:21.84\00:01:26.27 Petra prospered. But as the centuries rolled by, the camel 00:01:26.30\00:01:33.59 caravans that used to plod their way from Arabia to 00:01:33.62\00:01:37.11 Jerusalem and Damascus found an alternate route by the 00:01:37.14\00:01:42.13 Mediterranean and bypassed Petra. And as the result, 00:01:42.16\00:01:48.34 Petra's prosperity waned. Its population drifted away until 00:01:48.37\00:01:55.08 finally about 800 years ago, the valley lapsed into silence 00:01:55.09\00:02:00.99 and was deserted. Nobody knew where it was. Scholars knew 00:02:01.02\00:02:04.74 about Petra but they didn't know where it was. 00:02:04.77\00:02:07.78 And it was not until the year 1812 that the Swiss explorer, 00:02:07.79\00:02:14.00 Johann Burckhardt stumbled across these amazing ruins 00:02:14.03\00:02:18.42 and came out to tell an astonished world of what he 00:02:18.45\00:02:21.04 had seen - the lost city of Petra had been found. 00:02:21.07\00:02:26.79 Beautiful view from up here The Oleanders are blooming 00:02:53.54\00:02:57.72 all through the valley. And I'm up on the obelisk tomb. 00:02:57.75\00:03:02.01 It's called an obelisk tomb because of the four obelisks 00:03:02.04\00:03:07.18 that are on top of it; but they're not really obelisks 00:03:07.21\00:03:09.74 at all. They're fertility pillars. They were part of the 00:03:09.77\00:03:14.68 old Edomite type of worship and Nabatean worship and they're 00:03:14.69\00:03:19.11 the sort of thing that was forbidden in the Old Testament. 00:03:19.14\00:03:22.39 They're called Mesabot in Hebrew and they were not supposed 00:03:22.42\00:03:27.82 to worship these things. And so the instruction was to destroy 00:03:27.85\00:03:32.04 them. But actually its a tomb down below is the place or 00:03:32.07\00:03:36.13 triclinium where they had a funeral feast and up here 00:03:36.33\00:03:39.10 are the actual funeral vaults where the bodies are buried. 00:03:39.13\00:03:42.74 So this is called the obelisk tomb. 00:03:42.77\00:03:45.46 We are entering the ravine or Seka, which it is called 00:03:50.49\00:03:54.30 in Arabic, which leads into the Petra valley. And it was into 00:03:54.33\00:03:59.65 this valley that Johann Burkhardt, the Swiss explorer 00:03:59.68\00:04:02.47 came in 1812. Burkhardt was actually on his way to Africa. 00:04:02.50\00:04:06.57 He'd been employed by the African exploration society, 00:04:06.60\00:04:10.61 and they had advised him first of all to go to Syria and learn 00:04:10.64\00:04:14.32 the Arabic language, become familiar with the Islamic 00:04:14.35\00:04:17.06 religion before he went on to Africa. So he did that and when 00:04:17.09\00:04:22.42 he set out on his way to Africa, from Syria, he passed along 00:04:22.45\00:04:26.03 this way. Now he heard about this valley and so he decided 00:04:26.06\00:04:30.71 turn aside on the pretext that as a Muslim which he pretended 00:04:30.74\00:04:35.44 to be, he was going to offer a goat - sacrifice a goat to 00:04:35.47\00:04:39.00 Aaron's tomb. Aaron's tomb is up on top of Mount Hor. 00:04:39.03\00:04:42.82 And this was a sacred place for Arabs. And so he decided to 00:04:42.85\00:04:48.62 make this his pretext. But when he got into the valley and saw 00:04:48.65\00:04:52.37 inside, he was just absolutely over-awed and he realized he 00:04:52.40\00:04:56.01 must have found Petra. And apparently his Arab guide got 00:04:56.04\00:05:00.76 suspicious and threatened to kill him so he hastily 00:05:00.79\00:05:03.12 sacrificed his goat and came out to tell 00:05:03.15\00:05:06.17 the astonished world that he had found the lost city of Petra. 00:05:06.20\00:05:10.34 The walls of this ravine are anything up to 100 meters 00:05:18.67\00:05:21.54 in height. Just about meet overhead so it is a very easy 00:05:21.57\00:05:26.65 place for the defending army to defend against just a few men 00:05:26.68\00:05:31.45 against a whole army. 00:05:31.46\00:05:33.02 This is rather a quaint concept that the Nabateans had, well 00:06:13.34\00:06:16.48 it's quaint to our Western way of thinking, anyway. 00:06:16.51\00:06:18.69 very natural to them what they called God Houses. Solid stones 00:06:18.72\00:06:24.04 Their principal deity was a deity by the name of Dutra. 00:06:24.07\00:06:28.16 And they had these god houses. They're solid, you know, 00:06:28.19\00:06:32.44 you knock on the door and there is nobody going to open because 00:06:32.47\00:06:34.71 of its solid inside. You see they figure that god was a 00:06:34.74\00:06:38.06 spirit. God could go through stones so why go to the trouble 00:06:38.09\00:06:40.78 of hollowing out the thing. So this is one of the god houses 00:06:40.81\00:06:43.96 with an altar in front of it. 00:06:43.99\00:06:45.00 Well, you can imagine how Burkhardt felt when he got 00:06:47.48\00:06:51.21 to the end of the seek and this magnificent view burst on his 00:06:51.24\00:06:54.39 gaze. He must have been overwhelmed and you can 00:06:54.42\00:06:57.33 understand he betrayed his feelings. And this of course 00:06:57.36\00:06:59.88 also throws some light on a bible prophecy. 00:06:59.89\00:07:02.80 Now there's a special book in the bible that's entirely 00:07:02.83\00:07:05.55 debated the Petra, you know. The book of Obadiah. It starts 00:07:05.58\00:07:08.98 off by saying, The vision of Obadiah. Thus says the Lord 00:07:09.01\00:07:12.46 God concerning Edom. You who dwell in the clefts of the rock 00:07:12.49\00:07:17.01 who's habitation is high. Well you can see why it says, 00:07:17.04\00:07:20.36 the clefts of the rock, can't you? 00:07:20.39\00:07:21.97 Can you see that Arab man lying down there having a sleep in 00:07:25.44\00:07:28.41 the sun? Well, that'll give you some idea of the perspective 00:07:28.44\00:07:31.81 of the immensity of this huge building. Well we call it 00:07:31.84\00:07:36.98 a building, actually it's cut out of the stone and that's a 00:07:37.01\00:07:39.58 remarkable thing about Petra. You see they didn't build things 00:07:39.61\00:07:42.37 one on top of the other. They just simply started at the top 00:07:42.40\00:07:45.81 and began to work down and cut these things out of the 00:07:45.84\00:07:47.69 solid face of the mountain and what worries me is, just suppose 00:07:47.72\00:07:52.07 somebody makes a mistake? I mean, if you're using stones 00:07:52.10\00:07:55.10 or bricks, you just throw it away, use another one. 00:07:55.13\00:07:57.83 But if you make a mistake here, you've had it. 00:07:57.86\00:07:59.62 And so its remarkable that they could make such fantastic 00:07:59.65\00:08:03.87 structures, just simply cutting them out of the stone. 00:08:03.88\00:08:06.73 Now this place is called El Gazna in Arabic. 00:08:06.74\00:08:09.68 which means, the treasury. It is called that because up at the 00:08:09.71\00:08:12.79 top there's a sort of an urn, and the Arabs used to think 00:08:12.82\00:08:16.34 that it was full of beautiful treasures and they took pot 00:08:16.37\00:08:19.10 shots with their rifles and held out their hands underneath 00:08:19.13\00:08:22.11 hoping that it would split open and all these fabulous treasures 00:08:22.14\00:08:25.48 would fall down into their hands but never did, of course. 00:08:25.49\00:08:27.93 The reason that its called the Treasury is because of that 00:08:27.96\00:08:32.24 but the question is, Is it a tomb or is it a temple? 00:08:32.27\00:08:34.94 Opinion is divided on this. I personally think it is a temple 00:08:34.97\00:08:38.87 because inside there are niches where I think that the deities 00:08:38.90\00:08:43.22 could have been installed, you know, images. Well whatever 00:08:43.25\00:08:46.24 it was it is a fantastic piece of architecture and workmanship. 00:08:46.27\00:08:50.22 Well really ladies, wouldn't you like this for your front doorway 00:08:53.55\00:08:57.49 just look at these beautiful colors here and you've got all 00:08:57.52\00:09:00.67 the annuals growing in your front garden. 00:09:00.70\00:09:02.65 You see they even carved their houses out of the solid cliff 00:09:02.68\00:09:08.22 face. It must have been beautiful. Well this house is 00:09:08.25\00:09:12.08 rather badly weathered as you can see, but what a beauty 00:09:12.11\00:09:15.28 it was. Look, I'm sitting in somebody's windows here. 00:09:15.31\00:09:18.07 How about that for a window? And over there is one of the 00:09:18.08\00:09:21.67 other rooms and look at the ceiling, will you? 00:09:21.70\00:09:23.97 I mean, you'd pay a million dollars to get a ceiling painted 00:09:24.00\00:09:27.21 like that. Here it is, just natural, it just comes naturally 00:09:27.24\00:09:30.46 The early inhabitants of Petra were the Edomites who of course 00:09:43.62\00:09:47.75 were descendents of Edom, which is another name for Esau. 00:09:47.78\00:09:51.33 You know the story of Jacob and Esau, the twins-had a bit of 00:09:51.34\00:09:55.13 friction between them and that Jacob had to go off to Bethel 00:09:55.16\00:09:58.62 and so on. And later on Esau came down here and his 00:09:58.65\00:10:02.58 descendents occupied this area. And they found it naturally a 00:10:02.59\00:10:07.18 very suitable place, very easily defended, not only 00:10:07.21\00:10:10.47 because of the seek which could be easily defended, but right up 00:10:10.50\00:10:14.06 on the hill behind me, up there is what is known as Sela. 00:10:14.07\00:10:18.32 Now Sela is the Hebrews word for rock, a very big rock. 00:10:18.35\00:10:21.56 And you can see it is a very big rock. It's flat on top. 00:10:21.59\00:10:24.74 And it has some cisterns up there, in fact the Arabs today 00:10:24.77\00:10:28.37 Um al Biara, the place of cisterns and so at the last 00:10:28.64\00:10:33.55 resort they were able to retire up there and obviously it would 00:10:33.58\00:10:38.04 be very hard to dislodge them. That's why the bible spoke 00:10:38.05\00:10:41.14 about the Edomites, as, You who live as an eagle. 00:10:41.15\00:10:45.34 You know, up in the nests. So it was very high. However it was 00:10:45.35\00:10:49.27 conquered by the Israelites under King David. 00:10:49.30\00:10:52.77 Joab, the army captain came down here and conquered it. 00:10:52.80\00:10:55.75 He killed most of the males, actually. And then later on 00:10:55.78\00:10:58.81 in the days of King Amaziah, of Judah, we have the record 00:10:58.84\00:11:02.47 in 2nd Chronicles, and in chapter 25 and verse 12 00:11:02.50\00:11:06.87 And the children of Judah took captive another 10,000 alive 00:11:06.90\00:11:10.64 brought them to the top of the rock and cast them down from the 00:11:10.67\00:11:13.90 top of the rock so that they were all dashed in pieces. 00:11:13.93\00:11:16.73 Well I can tell you, it's a long way down. I've been up there, 00:11:16.76\00:11:19.44 looked down. You wouldn't want to go down there. 00:11:19.48\00:11:21.82 And this is what happened during the days of Amaziah. 00:11:21.85\00:11:24.81 However as time went by, the Edomites became very arrogant 00:11:24.84\00:11:29.43 and in particular they allied with the Babylonians. 00:11:29.46\00:11:32.34 And they were very vindictive against the Israelites. 00:11:32.37\00:11:36.07 And so it was that we have the record in the book of Obadiah, 00:11:36.10\00:11:41.08 the prophet who spoke against Petra-verse 10. 00:11:41.11\00:11:44.69 For your violence against your brother Jacob shame shall cover 00:11:44.73\00:11:48.46 you. You shall be cut off for ever. In the day that strangers 00:11:48.49\00:11:52.11 carried captive his forces, when foreigners entered his gates, 00:11:52.14\00:11:56.24 you were as one of them. 00:11:56.25\00:11:58.04 It was very malicious on their part. In fact it tells us over 00:11:58.07\00:12:01.24 here in the book of Psalms just what they said as they 00:12:01.27\00:12:04.72 united with the Babylonians. Psalm 137: Remember O Lord, 00:12:05.04\00:12:09.03 against the sons of Edom, the day of Jerusalem who said, 00:12:09.06\00:12:11.89 Raze it, raze it to its very foundation. 00:12:11.92\00:12:14.96 They egged the Babylonians on to completely destroy Jerusalem. 00:12:14.97\00:12:19.00 And so Jeremiah came up with the prophecy in chapter 49. 00:12:19.03\00:12:24.43 Against Edom, Thus says the Lord of Hosts, I have made Esau bare. 00:12:24.46\00:12:29.83 I have uncovered his secret places. Just have a look around, 00:12:29.86\00:12:33.38 will you? There's just absolutely nothing left here. 00:12:33.41\00:12:35.70 Its as bare as anything. Oh you who dwell in the clefts of the 00:12:35.73\00:12:39.75 rock, who hold the height of the hill, thought you make your 00:12:39.78\00:12:42.81 nest as high as the eagle, I will bring you down from there, 00:12:42.84\00:12:46.17 says the Lord. Edom shall be an astonishment. 00:12:46.20\00:12:48.81 Everyone who goes by it will be astonished. 00:12:48.84\00:12:51.45 And you've just got to come here and listen to the exclamations 00:12:51.48\00:12:55.38 that people make-tourists make. They're just absolutely 00:12:55.41\00:12:57.92 astonished at what they see. No one shall abide there. 00:12:57.95\00:13:02.20 Well, these prophecies often take a long time in fulfillment. 00:13:02.23\00:13:05.85 In fact, it almost seems as if it wasn't going to happen. 00:13:05.88\00:13:08.83 But it did. 00:13:08.86\00:13:10.17 In the 4th century B.C. a people by the name of the Nabateans, 00:13:21.39\00:13:25.89 came to Petra and squeezed the Edomites out. 00:13:25.92\00:13:29.25 And we're on the way up to the most spectacular edifice that is 00:13:29.28\00:13:35.50 attributed to them and that's a place called al-Deir, 00:13:35.53\00:13:38.31 on the way of course we past these beautiful walls. 00:13:38.34\00:13:41.65 You'd think that they were murals, wouldn't you? 00:13:41.68\00:13:43.97 Only they're too good for that. Well, the Nabateans are actually 00:13:43.98\00:13:47.69 descended from a character by the name of Nabayat who was 00:13:47.72\00:13:51.78 descended from Ishmael, Abraham's son, and they pushed 00:13:51.81\00:13:56.14 the Edomites out. They occupied this place, 00:13:56.17\00:13:58.04 And so the period of the Nabateans begins. 00:13:58.07\00:14:02.16 This is the Nabateans sacrificial high place. 00:14:42.02\00:14:46.55 You know the bible says whenever Israel apostatized, 00:14:46.58\00:14:49.73 they offered sacrifices on every high hill and under every green 00:14:49.76\00:14:57.16 tree. It seems to have been a system they had back there. 00:14:57.19\00:15:00.97 There's being a lot of fanaticizing About this. 00:15:01.00\00:15:03.82 Some people imagine that there were animals or human sacrifices 00:15:03.85\00:15:07.49 offered here. Well, there's no scriptural evidence to 00:15:07.52\00:15:11.08 support such an idea and from the size of this slab, 00:15:11.11\00:15:14.62 I would say its quite obvious it has just been for animal 00:15:14.65\00:15:16.91 sacrifices. So this apparently is where animals were sacrificed 00:15:16.94\00:15:21.70 and no doubt their blood was taken up here to the place 00:15:21.73\00:15:27.63 where oblations were made and where sacrifices were poured out 00:15:27.66\00:15:32.35 you know the blood, water-holy water poured out on here and it 00:15:32.38\00:15:36.33 ran down here through this little drain here. 00:15:36.36\00:15:38.36 Well, as you can see, I made it to the top. And what a fantastic 00:16:09.74\00:16:16.23 thing this is! Just look at it, will you. Cut out of the solid 00:16:16.26\00:16:20.74 face of the mountain and so beautifully done, so symmetrical 00:16:20.77\00:16:24.32 and it's a masterpiece of sculpturing. 00:16:24.35\00:16:29.01 For many years stories of Petra's fabulous wealth must've 00:16:37.27\00:16:41.88 reached Roman ears. But it was 00:16:41.91\00:16:44.01 not until the year 106 A.D. that Roman armies finally marched 00:16:44.04\00:16:48.41 into Petra, conquered it. And established the Roman way of 00:16:48.44\00:16:51.63 life here. Behind me is a victory gateway which they 00:16:51.66\00:16:55.23 built to commemorate the event. They ran a paved road 00:16:55.26\00:16:58.50 right through Petra and built this beautiful colonnade. 00:16:58.53\00:17:02.60 There were shops here. And so from then on you have the Roman 00:17:02.63\00:17:07.13 way of life here. 00:17:07.16\00:17:08.22 And here is a theater that was used in Roman times. 00:17:13.49\00:17:16.10 You know this could hold 30,000 spectators, so a lot of people 00:17:16.13\00:17:19.76 living here and you can see when they cut it or carved through 00:17:19.79\00:17:23.75 some of the tombs and left gaping holes there. Well some 00:17:23.78\00:17:27.08 body could get a good view from up there. 00:17:27.09\00:17:28.66 The tomb that you see up here on the left is thought to represent 00:17:34.95\00:17:39.84 the facade of a Roman palace. Actually this whole group of 00:17:39.87\00:17:42.94 tombs is of Roman style, adopted during the Roman period 00:17:42.97\00:17:46.59 by the Nabateans. The one away over there on right, 00:17:46.62\00:17:50.04 you see the one with the arches, well that's rather interesting 00:17:50.07\00:17:52.91 if you take a close look at it. 00:17:52.94\00:17:54.38 Early in the Christian era, Christianity came to Petra. 00:18:06.55\00:18:11.66 And this place was converted into a vast cathedral. 00:18:11.69\00:18:16.05 And what a place to worship! 00:18:16.08\00:18:18.71 In the 7th century A.D. Islam came here. But then the trade 00:18:24.77\00:18:31.38 routes began to alter. Caravans no longer threaded their way 00:18:31.41\00:18:36.34 through Petra. And the city began to die. 00:18:36.37\00:18:39.46 People drifted away and by the year 1200 A.D. the last record 00:18:39.49\00:18:44.98 we have is of the crusaders building a small fortress on the 00:18:45.01\00:18:49.29 hill. And then the valley lapsed into silence and there were only 00:18:49.32\00:18:54.35 the occasional nomads weaving their way around the valley. 00:18:54.36\00:18:58.47 Do you realize that what happened to Petra is a symbol 00:19:43.53\00:19:49.71 of what is going to happen to the whole world. 00:19:49.72\00:19:52.68 Let's turn back to the prophet of Petra, Obadiah. 00:19:52.71\00:19:57.87 And in his little book talking about Petra, he finishes up 00:19:57.90\00:20:03.09 by saying this. Verse 15, For the day of the Lord is upon 00:20:03.10\00:20:09.12 all the nations and it is near. And they shall be as though 00:20:09.15\00:20:14.39 they had never been. So you see it's not just a case of what 00:20:14.42\00:20:18.38 was going to happen to Petra. Obadiah was given a message 00:20:18.41\00:20:22.35 concerning the entire world at the end of time. And this, 00:20:22.38\00:20:27.77 of course, is consistent with what the other prophecies say. 00:20:27.80\00:20:31.50 For instance, in first Thessalonians, chapter 4, 00:20:31.53\00:20:34.85 and in verse 16, the great apostle Paul says, For the Lord 00:20:34.88\00:20:40.09 himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of 00:20:40.12\00:20:43.82 the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead 00:20:43.85\00:20:47.85 in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain 00:20:47.88\00:20:52.22 shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet 00:20:52.25\00:20:56.62 the Lord in the air. What a great day that will be. 00:20:56.65\00:20:58.99 All the good people who are ready to meet the Lord 00:20:59.02\00:21:02.07 will be raised from the dead and they'll be swept up from 00:21:02.10\00:21:05.56 this world with those who are ready who are living to meet 00:21:05.59\00:21:08.80 Christ in the air. Thou wilt forever be with the Lord. 00:21:08.83\00:21:10.92 Okay, what about those who are not ready? In Luke chapter 17 00:21:10.95\00:21:16.81 and in verse 28, it says, Likewise as it was also in the 00:21:16.84\00:21:21.14 days of Lot. They ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, 00:21:21.17\00:21:24.85 they planted, they built but on the day that Lot went out of 00:21:24.88\00:21:27.76 Sodom, it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and 00:21:27.79\00:21:30.14 destroyed them all. Even so will it be in the day when the 00:21:30.17\00:21:34.89 Son of man is revealed. And so the same thing's going to happen 00:21:34.92\00:21:39.07 All those who are not ready will be destroyed. 00:21:39.10\00:21:43.61 Now let me ask you a question. If all the good people go to 00:21:43.64\00:21:48.48 heaven and all the rest are destroyed, tell me, How many 00:21:48.51\00:21:53.27 people are going to be left alive in this world? 00:21:53.30\00:21:55.42 To answer that question, I turn to a very interesting prophecy 00:21:55.45\00:22:00.95 in Revelation, chapter 20, verse one where it says, 00:22:00.98\00:22:04.03 then I saw an angel coming down from heaven having the key 00:22:04.06\00:22:09.00 of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 00:22:09.03\00:22:12.49 He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old who is the devil 00:22:12.52\00:22:16.60 and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. 00:22:16.63\00:22:19.69 Now apparently what John saw in vision was one of these big 00:22:19.72\00:22:25.31 water systems that we've seen around the middle east, 00:22:25.34\00:22:27.53 you know, with a big stone on it's mouth and this angel 00:22:27.56\00:22:31.27 grabbed the devil, threw him into this pit. John couldn't see 00:22:31.30\00:22:35.49 the bottom to it so he called it a bottomless pit. 00:22:35.52\00:22:37.40 And then he put the stone on top of it, sealed it up, and he was 00:22:37.41\00:22:41.25 kept there for a thousand years. Now its quite apparent that this 00:22:41.28\00:22:45.12 symbolizes the condition of the world during the thousand years. 00:22:45.15\00:22:50.13 This world is going to be desolate. Its going to be 00:22:50.16\00:22:54.35 uninhabited. Its going to be just bare like this piece of 00:22:54.36\00:22:59.19 Petra that we have behind us here. 00:22:59.22\00:23:01.14 Well, just look at that. Absolutely desolate. 00:23:08.22\00:23:11.75 And that's the way the world's going to be for 1,000 years. 00:23:11.78\00:23:15.36 How come? Well, when Christ returns this world is just 00:23:15.39\00:23:19.66 going to be devastated. The bible tells us that mountains 00:23:19.69\00:23:23.66 are going to come crashing down into the plains. 00:23:23.69\00:23:25.76 Inhabited cities are just going to crumble. These proud 00:23:25.79\00:23:30.20 buildings that are in the world today, they're just going to 00:23:30.23\00:23:32.88 topple down. The inhabited islands are going to sink 00:23:32.91\00:23:36.52 beneath the foaming billows of the sea. 00:23:36.55\00:23:38.32 Everything is just going to be turned upside down. And inasmuch 00:23:38.35\00:23:41.75 as all God's people have been taken up there to heaven, 00:23:41.78\00:23:45.93 God's dwelling place, a very real place, wonderful place. 00:23:45.96\00:23:48.56 And all those who are lost are going to be dead. 00:23:48.59\00:23:51.77 there's just going to be nobody, nothing left in this world 00:23:51.81\00:23:55.34 for a thousand years. And the devil is going to have to join 00:23:55.37\00:23:59.01 in the ranks of the unemployed. He'll be out of a job. Nobody to 00:23:59.04\00:24:02.19 tempt. Nobody to annoy. No trouble to do. And so he just 00:24:02.22\00:24:06.25 going to be engaging in a lot of bickering and arguing with 00:24:06.28\00:24:08.97 all his fallen angels for a thousand years. 00:24:09.00\00:24:11.88 Serves him right. Well what happens then? 00:24:11.91\00:24:14.88 It says in Revelation 20 and in verse 7, Now when the thousand 00:24:14.91\00:24:20.11 years of have expired, Satan will be released from his prison 00:24:20.14\00:24:24.07 and will go out to deceive the nations which are in the 00:24:24.10\00:24:27.36 four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, 00:24:27.39\00:24:29.32 to gather them together to battle, whose number is as 00:24:29.36\00:24:32.74 the sand of the sea. Now here's lots of people, Where do they 00:24:32.77\00:24:35.45 come from? I think the answer is in verse 5, where it says, 00:24:35.48\00:24:39.86 The rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand 00:24:39.89\00:24:44.37 years were finished. So at the end of the thousand years, 00:24:44.40\00:24:48.36 apparently, the wicked people are going to be raised from the 00:24:48.39\00:24:52.69 dead. And the devil is going be in a job again. 00:24:52.72\00:24:56.54 Here are all the people to deceive and goes out and says, 00:24:56.57\00:25:00.66 Look, let's get going. We've got something to gain here. It 00:25:00.67\00:25:04.01 says, verse 9, They went up on the breadth of the earth and 00:25:04.04\00:25:06.90 surrounded the camp of the saints, and the beloved city. 00:25:06.93\00:25:09.75 Oh, where did this beloved city come from? It tells us in 00:25:09.78\00:25:13.59 Revelation 21, verse 2, Then I, John, saw the Holy City, New 00:25:13.62\00:25:18.46 Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God. 00:25:18.49\00:25:20.73 At the end of this thousand years God's people inside 00:25:20.76\00:25:24.15 this beautiful, wonderful city come floating down 00:25:24.18\00:25:27.51 and it settles on this earth. And so the devil goes out and he 00:25:27.54\00:25:30.76 says, Look! we ought to be inside there, we're the rightful 00:25:30.77\00:25:33.34 owners of this world. Come on, let's go up and attack them. 00:25:33.37\00:25:36.70 There are more of us than there are of them. Futile, of course. 00:25:36.73\00:25:40.97 Because you're up against God. But that's what he does. 00:25:40.98\00:25:43.79 It says, however, and fire came down from God out of heaven 00:25:43.82\00:25:48.46 and devoured them. And the devil who deceived them was 00:25:48.49\00:25:51.76 cast into the lake of fire and brimstone. Just as the world was 00:25:51.79\00:25:56.44 deluged with water in the days of Noah-came pouring down out of 00:25:56.47\00:26:00.23 the sky and turned this whole world into a vast lake of water 00:26:00.26\00:26:04.02 so at the end of the thousand years fire is going to come down 00:26:04.05\00:26:08.51 pouring out of the sky, and its going to turn this whole world 00:26:08.54\00:26:12.21 into a vast lake of fire. And it says in verse 13-14, I'm sorry, 00:26:12.24\00:26:18.74 then death and Hades, that's the grave, were cast into the lake 00:26:18.77\00:26:22.42 of fire. This is the 2nd death. Now nobody's going to enjoy 00:26:22.45\00:26:28.35 dying. I've told you, you don't need to be afraid of death, 00:26:28.38\00:26:31.36 if you're ready for it. But nobody's going to enjoy dying. 00:26:31.39\00:26:34.88 Who wants to die a 2nd time? And yet here are people who have 00:26:34.91\00:26:38.89 rejected Christ, who have rebelled against his laws 00:26:38.92\00:26:42.51 and government and they're going to die a second time 00:26:42.54\00:26:46.19 in this lake of fire. Now this lake of fire is the only hell 00:26:46.22\00:26:50.63 fire the bible talks about. People don't go soon as they die 00:26:50.66\00:26:54.67 and get burned and frazzled for millions of years. That's not 00:26:54.70\00:26:58.81 the way God deals with people. And the bible doesn't teach 00:26:58.84\00:27:01.02 that. This is hell fire. This is the lake of fire and it does its 00:27:01.03\00:27:06.16 work completely. It completely burns them up, so that 00:27:06.19\00:27:09.42 they'll be finally destroyed and the devil, all his wicked angels 00:27:09.45\00:27:13.38 and all his followers are going to be completely devoured 00:27:13.39\00:27:17.02 in this lake of fire. 00:27:17.05\00:27:18.45 Well, when those fires have finished their deadly work, 00:27:20.09\00:27:23.89 and cleared away. When the tragedy of sin is forever ended, 00:27:23.92\00:27:30.28 God is going to make a beautiful new world, a lovely new world 00:27:30.31\00:27:34.66 just like it was in the garden of Eden and perhaps even better. 00:27:34.69\00:27:38.47 It tells us here in the 2nd book of Peter, chapter 3, 00:27:38.48\00:27:42.74 and in verse 2, But the day of the Lord will come as a thief 00:27:42.77\00:27:47.76 in the night in the which the heavens will pass away 00:27:47.79\00:27:50.84 with a great noise and the elements will melt with fervent 00:27:50.87\00:27:53.49 heat, looking for and hasting the coming of the day of God; 00:27:53.52\00:27:57.07 because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire 00:27:57.10\00:28:01.01 and the elements will melt with fervent heat, nevertheless, 00:28:01.04\00:28:05.24 we according to his promise look for new heavens 00:28:05.27\00:28:09.12 and a new earth. I think we could do with a new heavens 00:28:09.15\00:28:13.78 and a new earth, don't you? A beautiful new earth, 00:28:13.81\00:28:17.19 where nothing ever goes wrong. But then Peter asks a very 00:28:17.22\00:28:21.35 significant question. He says this, Therefore since all these 00:28:21.38\00:28:26.89 things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to 00:28:26.92\00:28:31.36 be? How do you like that question? What manner of persons 00:28:31.39\00:28:35.57 ought you to be? You know I hope you've enjoyed these programs 00:28:35.60\00:28:41.94 we've presented to you. You've seen me a lot on these programs. 00:28:41.97\00:28:45.61 I've never met you, but I feel as though I've been talking 00:28:45.64\00:28:50.68 to you and I want to meet you. I'd like to meet you in that 00:28:50.71\00:28:55.87 wonderful kingdom. You know, there's something we should 00:28:55.90\00:28:58.17 consider, and that is at the end of that thousand years, all 00:28:58.20\00:29:02.78 humanity is going to be alive together at one place. 00:29:02.81\00:29:06.26 I mean, some will be inside God's city, and the others 00:29:06.29\00:29:10.76 will be outside. I sure want you to be inside. 00:29:10.79\00:29:14.96 I want to meet you there. Won't you promise me, please 00:29:14.99\00:29:20.50 promise me that you will accept Jesus Christ as your Savior 00:29:20.53\00:29:24.63 and do everything he tells you to do so that we can meet 00:29:24.66\00:29:29.86 together at Jesus' feet. 00:29:29.89\00:29:32.47
