In this program we visit the traditional Mt. Nebo 00:00:01.98\00:00:04.94 from which Moses viewed the promised land before he died. 00:00:04.97\00:00:08.83 He climbed this mountain shortly after he had written the book of 00:00:08.86\00:00:12.75 Deuteronomy, which, by the way, contains some remarkable 00:00:12.78\00:00:16.35 information on how to live longer, 00:00:16.38\00:00:18.99 and how to enjoy a good life. 00:00:19.03\00:00:20.44 The hill over there, on which there is a church built, 00:00:55.54\00:00:58.91 is Mt. Nebo, and it may not look very imposing from here, 00:00:58.94\00:01:03.26 but from the Jordan valley where Moses ascended from, 00:01:03.29\00:01:07.06 it's 1,000 meters up to the top. 00:01:07.09\00:01:09.37 From the top we get a very fine view, of course. 00:01:09.40\00:01:12.67 We can see right out over the Jordan valley. 00:01:12.70\00:01:15.17 You can see on the left the Dead Sea, and in the distance, 00:01:15.20\00:01:19.61 on a fine day, we can see the hills of Judea, and Jerusalem 00:01:19.64\00:01:23.74 even surrounding the hills. 00:01:23.77\00:01:25.20 Would you like to know how to live longer and enjoy it? 00:01:30.51\00:01:35.09 Well I've got good news for you. 00:01:35.12\00:01:37.25 Moses, in the book of Deuteronomy, tells us we can 00:01:37.29\00:01:40.91 live longer, and he tells us how to do it. 00:01:40.94\00:01:43.87 In Deuteronomy chapter 4 and in verse 40 he says, 00:01:43.90\00:01:49.20 you shall therefore keep his statues and his commandments 00:01:49.23\00:01:52.93 which I command you today, that you may prolong your days 00:01:52.96\00:01:57.51 in the land which the Lord your God is giving you. 00:01:57.54\00:02:01.07 So there you are; you can live longer. 00:02:01.10\00:02:02.67 Well, what's the secret of it? 00:02:02.70\00:02:05.09 It says in chapter 7, It shall come to pass because you 00:02:05.12\00:02:09.79 listened to these judgments, and keep, and do them, 00:02:09.82\00:02:12.97 the Lord will take away from you all sickness, 00:02:13.00\00:02:16.23 and will afflict you with none of the terrible diseases 00:02:16.26\00:02:19.48 of Egypt which you have none. 00:02:19.51\00:02:21.00 There's nothing arbitrary about this. 00:02:21.03\00:02:23.96 It wasn't that God was saying listen, I'm going to make all 00:02:23.99\00:02:26.68 the other nations sick, and I'm going to make you good, and 00:02:26.71\00:02:29.91 strong, and healthy. 00:02:29.94\00:02:30.91 This was a case of follow the rules and you'll reap 00:02:30.92\00:02:35.35 the benefits. 00:02:35.38\00:02:36.35 Don't follow the rules and you'll reap the consequences. 00:02:36.36\00:02:39.75 Let me just give you a few simple illustrations of this. 00:02:39.78\00:02:44.19 You've heard of the proverb saying, cleanliness 00:02:44.22\00:02:48.55 is next to Godliness. 00:02:48.58\00:02:50.75 Heard that one? 00:02:50.78\00:02:51.75 It's not actually a quotation from the Bible. 00:02:51.76\00:02:54.64 But, never the less, the Bible certainly does teach that we 00:02:54.67\00:02:58.88 need to have cleanly habits. 00:02:58.91\00:03:02.29 For instance, in Exodus chapter 19, verse 10, 00:03:02.32\00:03:14.15 Then the Lord said to Moses, Go to the people, and sanctify them 00:03:14.18\00:03:18.58 today and tomorrow, and let them wash their clothes... 00:03:18.61\00:03:22.28 Well, you see, cleanliness is next to Godliness. 00:03:22.31\00:03:25.56 And if you are hygienic and keep yourself clean, 00:03:25.59\00:03:29.60 well, naturally, you're going to avoid some of these skin 00:03:29.63\00:03:31.99 diseases which people get. 00:03:32.02\00:03:34.45 And there's some other rules here, too. 00:03:34.48\00:03:36.63 Now you listen to this very simple one in Numbers 00:03:36.66\00:03:41.11 chapter 19, and in verse 15, Every open vessel which has no 00:03:41.14\00:03:47.31 cover fastened on it is unclean. 00:03:47.34\00:03:50.21 Now that's quite important, you know, because if you leave 00:03:50.24\00:03:53.51 a vessel, whether it's a pot or a dish, and some food, and it's 00:03:53.54\00:03:57.19 uncovered, well, it's not long before the flies sit on it, 00:03:57.22\00:04:01.04 and it's going to be contaminated. 00:04:01.07\00:04:02.33 That's the way disease spreads. 00:04:02.36\00:04:04.48 So God told the Israelites, follow these simple rules 00:04:04.51\00:04:08.67 and you won't have some of these problems. 00:04:08.70\00:04:11.60 Now here's another very practical one, listen: 00:04:11.63\00:04:13.67 in Deuteronomy 23, verse 13, You shall have an implement 00:04:13.70\00:04:18.93 among your equipment, and when you sit down outside you shall 00:04:18.96\00:04:22.47 dig with it and turn and cover your refuse. 00:04:22.50\00:04:25.23 Now there's a lot of diseases in the East. 00:04:25.26\00:04:28.93 I've seen the people of India, for instance, out in the 00:04:28.96\00:04:31.85 morning, you know, out to the patty fields. 00:04:31.88\00:04:33.83 They just go to the toilet there. 00:04:33.86\00:04:36.05 They just leave it. 00:04:36.08\00:04:37.26 The flies come swarming over it, and the next thing they're back 00:04:37.29\00:04:40.89 in the windows and sitting on the food. 00:04:40.92\00:04:42.30 That's why there's so much cholera, typhoid, 00:04:42.33\00:04:44.53 amoeba, dysentery. 00:04:44.56\00:04:46.42 Well, here's some good instruction, 00:04:46.45\00:04:49.08 practical instruction. 00:04:49.11\00:04:50.50 And Moses told the people follow this instruction and 00:04:50.53\00:04:55.84 you will avoid the diseases that are so rampant among 00:04:55.87\00:04:59.47 the other nations. 00:04:59.50\00:05:00.47 Now what I have told you so far is probably nothing new to you. 00:05:05.44\00:05:09.92 I'm sure you've all got nice, clean, hygienic kitchens. 00:05:09.95\00:05:12.67 But you've got to remember, it wasn't always that way. 00:05:12.70\00:05:15.16 You know, people never dreamed that disease could be carried 00:05:15.19\00:05:18.58 on the legs of flies. 00:05:18.61\00:05:21.04 But, of course, we know that now. 00:05:21.07\00:05:22.40 So we can see that this instruction just has 00:05:22.43\00:05:26.48 to be inspired. 00:05:26.51\00:05:27.48 Moses certainly didn't get it from the Egyptian doctors. 00:05:27.50\00:05:30.34 It must have come from God! 00:05:30.37\00:05:31.80 And that should give us a lot of confidence in the rest of the 00:05:31.83\00:05:34.87 instruction that He's passed on to us. 00:05:34.90\00:05:37.19 Behind me is a bronze serpent on a pole. 00:05:37.22\00:05:41.51 This commemorates an incident in the wilderness wanderings. 00:05:41.54\00:05:44.45 The people were being bitten by snakes, and they were 00:05:44.48\00:05:48.65 dying likes flies. 00:05:48.68\00:05:49.65 So God told Moses to make this metal serpent; put it on a pole, 00:05:49.66\00:05:53.62 and whoever looked at it would live. 00:05:53.65\00:05:55.25 They'd recover. 00:05:55.28\00:05:56.63 Now this indicates that God is very interested in our health, 00:05:56.66\00:05:59.81 happiness, and recovery from disease. 00:05:59.84\00:06:02.69 And, of course, especially prevention of disease is even 00:06:02.72\00:06:05.43 more important. 00:06:05.46\00:06:06.57 So we can have a lot of confidence in the instruction 00:06:06.60\00:06:09.71 that is given here. 00:06:09.74\00:06:10.80 And let me give you a little bit more. 00:06:10.83\00:06:12.58 Now here is something that is, perhaps more relevant 00:06:12.61\00:06:15.16 to our modern world. 00:06:15.20\00:06:16.17 In Leviticus, chapter 13, verse 45, Now the leper on whom the 00:06:16.18\00:06:22.08 sore is, his clothes shall be torn, and his head bare, 00:06:22.11\00:06:24.91 and he shall cover his mustache, or his mouth, 00:06:24.94\00:06:27.81 and cry, Unclean, unclean. 00:06:27.84\00:06:30.02 And he shall dwell alone, and his habitation shall be 00:06:30.05\00:06:32.29 outside the camp. 00:06:32.32\00:06:33.29 Now anyone who has been inside a surgery, you know, 00:06:33.30\00:06:36.91 when an operation is in progress. 00:06:36.94\00:06:38.41 You see the doctors with all their coverings on their lips. 00:06:38.44\00:06:41.47 And this is to prevent the spread of disease. 00:06:41.50\00:06:44.86 We know that disease can be spread through what is breathed 00:06:44.89\00:06:48.18 out of the mouth. 00:06:48.21\00:06:49.18 So here is some instruction that was along these lines. 00:06:49.19\00:06:52.63 This lets us know that God knew what He was talking about 00:06:52.66\00:06:57.22 way back there. 00:06:57.25\00:06:58.22 Here's something else in our cholesterol conscious age: 00:06:58.23\00:07:02.27 Leviticus 3, verse 17, This shall be a perpetual statute 00:07:02.30\00:07:06.29 throughout your generations, and all your dwellings. 00:07:06.32\00:07:08.65 You shall eat neither fat nor blood. 00:07:08.68\00:07:11.82 Now we're just waking up to that today. 00:07:11.85\00:07:13.71 And here it was thousands of years ago: don't eat fat! 00:07:13.74\00:07:19.16 It just builds up cholesterol in your arteries, and veins, 00:07:19.19\00:07:22.26 and it can bring on a heart attack. 00:07:22.29\00:07:25.46 So, here's some very up-to-date counsel, isn't it? 00:07:25.49\00:07:28.57 Now there is something that a lot of people think is very 00:07:28.60\00:07:32.08 important for their happiness, and that's the use of 00:07:32.11\00:07:36.01 alcoholic beverages. 00:07:36.04\00:07:37.55 But, is it? 00:07:37.58\00:07:39.07 You know, I think I've had a little experience in this. 00:07:39.10\00:07:43.51 My father was a good man. 00:07:43.54\00:07:45.48 I was brought up in an affluent home, but he was a drinker. 00:07:45.51\00:07:49.43 And I'll tell you, whenever he came back, and had had some 00:07:49.46\00:07:51.74 drinks, there was a lot of very unhappy scenes in the home. 00:07:51.77\00:07:55.60 And, of course, alcohol also causes accidents; 00:07:55.63\00:07:59.25 even a little bit. 00:07:59.28\00:08:00.56 And it certainly is a drain on the pocket. 00:08:00.59\00:08:03.38 There's a lot of reasons why we shouldn't be using alcohol. 00:08:03.41\00:08:05.71 And it says over here in Proverbs 20, verse 1, 00:08:05.74\00:08:09.49 Wine is a mocker, intoxicating drink arouses brawling, 00:08:09.52\00:08:14.72 and whoever is led astray by it is not wise. 00:08:14.75\00:08:18.56 I think that is very relevant counsel, don't you? 00:08:18.59\00:08:20.96 But there's always somebody who will raise the question: 00:08:23.10\00:08:25.91 didn't Jesus turn water into wine at the marriage feast 00:08:25.94\00:08:30.18 at Cana of Galilee? 00:08:30.21\00:08:31.34 Yes, indeed He did. 00:08:31.37\00:08:32.71 In fact this is one of two churches in Cana of Galilee 00:08:32.74\00:08:37.06 that commemorate the miracle. 00:08:37.09\00:08:39.29 And inside this particular church there is a stone jar 00:08:39.32\00:08:43.66 and it's standing in front of a little water cistern. 00:08:43.69\00:08:46.56 And so this church commemorates the incident. 00:08:46.59\00:08:49.12 It really happened; sure. 00:08:49.15\00:08:50.42 But the question is, which type of wine? 00:08:50.46\00:08:52.85 You see, there are two types of wine. 00:08:52.88\00:08:55.34 We recognize that. 00:08:55.37\00:08:56.34 You can either go into a liquor shop and buy a bottle of 00:08:56.37\00:09:00.44 alcoholic wine, or you can go into a supermarket and buy a 00:09:00.47\00:09:04.74 bottle of grape juice, which we sometimes refer to as 00:09:04.77\00:09:07.73 unfermented wine. 00:09:07.76\00:09:08.88 Now in our society these are two separate and distinct things. 00:09:08.91\00:09:13.31 One is alcoholic, and the other is non-alcoholic. 00:09:13.34\00:09:16.79 But in biblical times, of course, they didn't label 00:09:16.82\00:09:19.23 them on bottles just as clearly as that. 00:09:19.26\00:09:21.50 When the grape crushing season came along they crushed the 00:09:21.53\00:09:25.54 grapes, got the juice, and for a few days it was unfermented. 00:09:25.57\00:09:30.08 And then if you didn't do anything about it, 00:09:30.11\00:09:32.40 then, of course, it became fermented. 00:09:32.43\00:09:34.34 However, they had a system of boiling it, boiling it, 00:09:34.37\00:09:38.46 and boiling it until it became a thick, syrupy juice. 00:09:38.49\00:09:40.95 That would keep for up until nearly twelve months. 00:09:40.98\00:09:44.23 All you had to do was add water to taste. 00:09:44.26\00:09:47.51 So, there are two types of wines spoken of in the Bible. 00:09:47.54\00:09:50.30 You have, for instance, in Isaiah chapter 65, verse 8, 00:09:50.33\00:09:55.23 Thus says the Lord, As the new wine is found in the cluster, 00:09:55.26\00:09:59.78 and one says, Do not destroy it; for a blessing is in it. 00:09:59.81\00:10:03.12 I like grape juice. 00:10:03.15\00:10:04.67 It's a good drink, and there's a real blessing in it. 00:10:04.70\00:10:06.87 But, of course, there is another type of wine which is 00:10:06.91\00:10:09.61 condemned in the Bible. 00:10:09.65\00:10:10.88 Proverbs chapter 23, verse 29, Who has woe? who hath sorrow? 00:10:10.91\00:10:16.64 who has contentions? who has complaints? who has wounds 00:10:16.67\00:10:20.60 without cause? who has redness of eyes? 00:10:20.63\00:10:23.19 Those who linger long at the wine;... 00:10:23.22\00:10:25.92 Now you don't need to wonder very long as to just what type 00:10:25.95\00:10:29.48 of wine is referred to there. 00:10:29.51\00:10:30.89 Obviously, that is alcoholic wine causing the 00:10:30.92\00:10:34.07 red eyes, and the wounds without cause, and so forth. 00:10:34.10\00:10:37.47 And so it says here, Do not look on the wine when it is red, 00:10:37.50\00:10:41.37 when it sparkles in the cup. 00:10:41.40\00:10:43.03 At the last it bites like a serpent and stings like a viper. 00:10:43.06\00:10:47.07 Not only don't drink it, don't even look at it. 00:10:47.10\00:10:51.26 Don't be tempted because alcoholic wine is harmful 00:10:51.29\00:10:54.80 to the health. 00:10:54.83\00:10:55.80 Now let's take a look at the physical effects of alcohol 00:10:55.81\00:10:59.83 on the human body. 00:10:59.86\00:11:00.90 I want to talk to Dr. John Quinn of Sydney's large 00:11:00.93\00:11:04.48 West Meade Hospital. 00:11:04.51\00:11:05.55 Dr. Quinn has a degree in Science. 00:11:05.58\00:11:08.72 He has a degree in medicine. 00:11:08.75\00:11:10.69 And he has a Ph. D. in Immunology, which makes him 00:11:10.72\00:11:15.26 pretty well qualified to talk to us. 00:11:15.29\00:11:17.33 Dr. Quinn, what can you tell us about the effect of alcohol 00:11:17.36\00:11:20.65 on the human body? 00:11:20.68\00:11:21.65 Yes, David, thank you. 00:11:21.66\00:11:22.63 I'll just start off by telling some of the statistics 00:11:22.64\00:11:28.33 associated with alcohol in medicine. 00:11:28.36\00:11:30.47 For example, it's known that 85% of Australian men, 00:11:30.50\00:11:35.38 and 75% of the women, drink alcohol in some form or another. 00:11:35.41\00:11:39.68 Now alcohol, even in minor amounts, can interfere with 00:11:39.71\00:11:44.86 medications that many people take for minor illnesses. 00:11:44.89\00:11:48.24 Now the problem with that is that the effects 00:11:48.27\00:11:50.45 are unpredictable, and this can lead to sleepiness. 00:11:50.48\00:11:53.85 It can interfere with their ability to drive a car, 00:11:53.88\00:11:56.38 and perform various skilled tasks. 00:11:56.41\00:11:58.86 Now even in moderate amounts alcohol can acerbate many 00:11:58.89\00:12:03.57 medical conditions that people have. 00:12:03.60\00:12:06.00 While in excessive amounts alcohol leads to a whole host 00:12:06.03\00:12:10.67 of disease processes. 00:12:10.70\00:12:12.30 Well, when somebody puts the bottle to their lips, 00:12:12.33\00:12:15.40 what actually happens when it starts pouring 00:12:15.43\00:12:17.53 down their throat? 00:12:17.56\00:12:18.53 Yes, well, David, after they've taken a mouthful, obviously 00:12:18.54\00:12:23.91 it goes down the main esophagus into the stomach, and there it 00:12:23.94\00:12:29.48 goes on into the small bowel where it's largely 00:12:29.51\00:12:32.09 absorbed from. 00:12:32.12\00:12:33.11 Now, on the way down through the esophagus, it irritates the 00:12:33.14\00:12:37.29 lining of the esophagus. 00:12:37.32\00:12:38.54 And also in the stomach it irritates the lining. 00:12:38.57\00:12:40.87 And this leads to pain in the long term, and a condition 00:12:40.90\00:12:44.14 called esophagitis, or gastritis, and bleeding. 00:12:44.17\00:12:47.72 While in the small bowel, the irritation of the wall can 00:12:47.75\00:12:50.61 interfere with the absorption of many important nutrients, 00:12:50.64\00:12:53.61 in particular the B group vitamins. 00:12:53.64\00:12:55.76 Is this a liver you've got there? 00:12:55.79\00:12:59.11 What effect does alcohol have on your liver? 00:12:59.14\00:13:01.44 Well, because of the arrangement of the anatomy in the body, 00:13:01.47\00:13:06.33 the substances that are absorbed from the small bowel in the 00:13:06.36\00:13:10.20 stomach, first of all, are taken to the liver. 00:13:10.23\00:13:13.58 Now the liver is a process, a storehouse, and a processing 00:13:13.61\00:13:17.60 factory in the body. 00:13:17.63\00:13:18.82 And because of this, as the alcohol is absorbed from the 00:13:18.85\00:13:22.90 digestive system, it's the liver that bears the first brunt, 00:13:22.93\00:13:25.92 other than the lining of the small intestine. 00:13:25.95\00:13:29.84 Now even a single episode of binge drinking, such is very 00:13:29.87\00:13:34.08 common on a Friday evening in Australian populations, 00:13:34.11\00:13:37.18 can lead to a condition called fatty liver. 00:13:37.21\00:13:40.98 As you can see in this liver here, this is what's called 00:13:41.01\00:13:44.92 the cirrhotic liver, which is a long term consequence 00:13:44.95\00:13:48.39 of excessive alcohol. 00:13:48.42\00:13:50.01 But you can see these little fat globules, if I can point them 00:13:50.04\00:13:53.61 out with my pen. 00:13:53.64\00:13:54.73 The normal liver is sort of smooth and homogeneous. 00:13:54.76\00:13:58.44 These little fat globulars have replaced the normal 00:13:58.47\00:14:02.26 liver tissue. 00:14:02.29\00:14:03.79 As a result, the functions of the liver are interfered with, 00:14:03.82\00:14:06.91 and in time this can lead to serious disease. 00:14:06.94\00:14:10.23 The person ends up a rather pathetic sight with a swollen, 00:14:10.26\00:14:14.06 bloated stomach. 00:14:14.09\00:14:15.21 They are unable to process many of the nutrients that are 00:14:15.24\00:14:19.92 absorbed, and also, unfortunately, many of the 00:14:19.95\00:14:23.30 toxins that come in from the digestive system from the 00:14:23.33\00:14:27.61 breakdown of proteins in the bacterial products. 00:14:27.64\00:14:30.23 When they get to the liver they're dealt with, 00:14:30.26\00:14:32.78 and detoxified. 00:14:32.81\00:14:34.74 But if the liver doesn't work, then they're getting into the 00:14:34.77\00:14:37.40 circulation and can interfere with many of the 00:14:37.43\00:14:40.05 body's functions. 00:14:40.08\00:14:41.13 It's all pretty frightening. 00:14:41.16\00:14:42.40 Now what's this over here? 00:14:42.43\00:14:44.00 Don't tell me that's a heart, is it? 00:14:44.03\00:14:45.24 Alcohol effects the heart? 00:14:45.27\00:14:47.13 Yes, now, unfortunately, the heart, too, bears a large brunt 00:14:47.16\00:14:52.82 of excessive alcohol intake. 00:14:52.85\00:14:55.33 Now the normal heart is about the size of your clenched fist. 00:14:55.36\00:14:58.93 And if I compare my fist with this heart, even though this 00:14:58.96\00:15:02.46 heart is opened up to display the internal structures, you can 00:15:02.49\00:15:06.42 see that this is a very large heart. 00:15:06.45\00:15:08.87 Now what happens is that the alcohol acts as a toxin on 00:15:08.90\00:15:12.69 the muscle cells, and these muscle cells are unable to 00:15:12.72\00:15:16.38 contract properly. 00:15:16.41\00:15:17.47 And as a result, the heart tries to compensate by getting larger, 00:15:17.50\00:15:22.54 and, therefore, allowing more blood to be pumped in and out. 00:15:22.57\00:15:25.96 Also the force of the contraction is better the larger 00:15:25.99\00:15:29.25 the heart gets, to a certain extent. 00:15:29.28\00:15:31.03 In time this heart becomes so large and dilated that the wall 00:15:31.06\00:15:36.33 becomes very floppy, and it's unable to pump the blood 00:15:36.36\00:15:39.55 adequately through the body. 00:15:39.58\00:15:41.27 The person ends up with a condition called 00:15:41.30\00:15:43.24 alcoholic Cardiopathy. 00:15:43.27\00:15:45.03 Well, it sounds like the long term effects 00:15:45.06\00:15:47.89 are pretty disastrous. 00:15:47.92\00:15:49.79 What about the short term effects? 00:15:49.82\00:15:51.75 Yes, well, the short term effects are something that's 00:15:51.78\00:15:55.16 more relevant to the average sort of Australian, since we can 00:15:55.19\00:15:59.25 consider only about 10% of males, about 3 to 5% of females 00:15:59.28\00:16:04.63 eventually go on to become what we would refer to as 00:16:04.66\00:16:07.52 chronic alcoholics. 00:16:07.55\00:16:09.07 The under aged; the under 17, and the under 25 year age group 00:16:09.10\00:16:17.08 in Australia; they're a very large proportion of drinkers 00:16:17.11\00:16:20.95 in Australia. 00:16:20.98\00:16:21.95 And, unfortunately, just looking at the male population, 00:16:21.96\00:16:26.91 about 30 to 40% of these young men will eventually get into 00:16:26.94\00:16:31.37 some trouble in their youth, and their early adulthood, 00:16:31.40\00:16:35.55 because of excessive alcohol. 00:16:35.58\00:16:37.03 This may be in the form of a motor vehicle accident. 00:16:37.06\00:16:41.10 And despite random breath testing in Australia, 00:16:41.13\00:16:43.81 still about 50% of fatal road accidents are caused by 00:16:43.84\00:16:48.86 excessive alcohol intake. 00:16:48.89\00:16:51.02 Then we have domestic violence. 00:16:51.05\00:16:53.17 Alcohol is a significant contributor here. 00:16:53.20\00:16:57.08 The person may be drinking and is unable to control many of 00:16:57.11\00:17:02.69 their normal emotions. 00:17:02.72\00:17:05.08 This can lead to violence, which is a rather dreaded, 00:17:05.11\00:17:10.10 and unfortunate thing that we see in the Australian community. 00:17:10.13\00:17:13.13 So your advice, I presume, is keep off the bottle, aye? 00:17:13.16\00:17:17.91 Even in moderate drinking? 00:17:17.94\00:17:19.00 What do you think? 00:17:19.03\00:17:20.63 Yes, even in moderate drinking, 00:17:20.67\00:17:21.86 particularly in females, for example. 00:17:21.90\00:17:25.08 I mean it's been shown that in a woman that is pregnant, even one 00:17:25.11\00:17:30.11 or two standard drinks a day can lead to a condition called 00:17:30.15\00:17:33.96 the fetal alcohol syndrome in which the poor unfortunate 00:17:33.99\00:17:37.64 newborn child is mentally and physically handicapped for 00:17:37.68\00:17:40.92 the rest of their life just because of their mother's 00:17:40.95\00:17:44.10 excessive alcohol during the pregnancy. 00:17:44.13\00:17:46.30 There is something else that Moses wrote just before he 00:17:46.33\00:17:49.81 climbed Mt. Nebo. 00:17:49.84\00:17:51.24 You'll find it in Deuteronomy 29:18; listen: 00:17:51.27\00:17:55.96 And that there may not be among you a root bearing bitterness 00:17:55.99\00:18:00.81 or wormwood. 00:18:00.84\00:18:01.89 Some translations put it that there may not be a 00:18:01.92\00:18:04.49 poisonous herb. 00:18:04.52\00:18:05.57 Now there's quite a few poisonous herbs growing 00:18:05.60\00:18:08.13 in the world today, and, unfortunately, some people 00:18:08.16\00:18:10.92 are using them to their detriment. 00:18:10.96\00:18:13.37 For instance, there is the tobacco leaf. 00:18:13.40\00:18:15.57 And you've only got to look at a packet of cigarettes 00:18:15.60\00:18:18.61 and read it here: WARNING smoking is a health hazard. 00:18:18.64\00:18:22.40 And according to the latest government regulations, 00:18:22.43\00:18:24.74 the tobacco companies have to be even more specific than that. 00:18:24.77\00:18:28.03 It is a deadly poison, and it's not wise to use it. 00:18:28.06\00:18:32.30 I talked with Dr. Russell Butler who is a consultant physician 00:18:32.33\00:18:38.24 about the effect of smoking on the human body. 00:18:38.27\00:18:42.17 Tobacco has a lot of effects on the human body which we've been 00:18:42.20\00:18:46.10 aware of for, oh, maybe 30 years, since the first reports 00:18:46.13\00:18:51.21 were made of an association between smoking, particularly 00:18:51.24\00:18:54.97 smoking cigarettes, and lung cancer. 00:18:55.00\00:18:59.30 You know, a cigarette is really very much like a chimney. 00:18:59.34\00:19:04.22 And if you were to get on the end of a chimney and inhale 00:19:04.25\00:19:07.58 the smoke, you'd expect it to be fairly nasty on the body. 00:19:07.61\00:19:11.21 Now if you look here at this picture of a normal lung 00:19:11.24\00:19:15.02 you'll see that it's pink with a few specks of black on it, 00:19:15.05\00:19:20.75 just from the normal dust that we see in the air. 00:19:20.78\00:19:25.78 But this specimen I've got in the bottle here shows the 00:19:25.81\00:19:30.61 blackening which happens when someone smokes regularly over a 00:19:30.64\00:19:37.36 protracted period of time. 00:19:37.39\00:19:38.81 Now the person who did this had the consequences that they 00:19:38.84\00:19:46.88 eventually developed a lung cancer. 00:19:46.91\00:19:48.77 And this pale patch of tissue here is the cancer which 00:19:48.80\00:19:53.53 eventually led to them having to have this lung removed. 00:19:53.56\00:19:56.51 Beyond that they have a patch of pneumonia because the 00:19:56.54\00:20:00.94 air passages in the lung have been obstructed by the 00:20:00.97\00:20:05.16 development of this cancer. 00:20:05.19\00:20:06.57 It's been well known for a long time now that people who smoke, 00:20:06.60\00:20:13.54 particularly people who smoke cigarettes, are likely to have 00:20:13.57\00:20:17.73 something, about a twenty times increased risk of developing 00:20:17.76\00:20:22.84 lung cancer. 00:20:22.87\00:20:23.84 The other effects of smoking, however, are perhaps not so 00:20:23.85\00:20:30.52 evident, and not apparently statistically so great. 00:20:30.55\00:20:35.62 For instance, people also develop heart disease. 00:20:35.65\00:20:41.09 We've got some pictures here of the inside of blood vessels 00:20:41.12\00:20:44.43 which show the deposition of cholesterol and other material 00:20:44.46\00:20:51.44 which tends to block up the arteries. 00:20:51.47\00:20:53.81 Now, statistically, the increase in risk of developing heart 00:20:53.84\00:21:02.49 disease due to smoking is only about two or threefold. 00:21:02.52\00:21:06.30 But when you think that nearly a third of the population 00:21:06.33\00:21:09.67 eventually dies of heart disease, it's very much more 00:21:09.70\00:21:13.58 common than these with lung cancer. 00:21:14.03\00:21:15.28 So the influence of smoking in accelerating heart disease 00:21:15.31\00:21:19.45 is, in fact, much more important as a public health problem 00:21:19.48\00:21:22.44 than is lung cancer. 00:21:22.47\00:21:25.30 But there are other poisonous plants around besides tobacco 00:21:25.33\00:21:29.25 leaves, you know. 00:21:29.28\00:21:30.25 I want to talk to Don Bain, who is the Director of the 00:21:30.26\00:21:33.83 Health Department of the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:21:33.86\00:21:36.49 in the South Pacific region. 00:21:36.52\00:21:38.33 Don, what can you tell us about marijuana? 00:21:38.36\00:21:42.02 David, I guess we could tell you a great deal about marijuana 00:21:42.05\00:21:44.82 because this is a very old drug that's been used in Eastern 00:21:44.85\00:21:47.61 countries for thousands of years has in recent decades 00:21:47.64\00:21:51.40 been discovered by people in Western society. 00:21:51.43\00:21:54.27 Many people think that this is a very innocuous substance, 00:21:54.30\00:21:57.62 but it's not. 00:21:57.65\00:21:58.62 It's actually a very subtle drug. 00:21:58.63\00:22:00.55 It appears to be virtually harmless, but its effect upon 00:22:00.58\00:22:04.20 the body is really only starting to be understood now as we're 00:22:04.23\00:22:07.51 doing more research. 00:22:07.54\00:22:08.64 Marijuana is a mood altering drug and it effects our concept 00:22:08.67\00:22:13.46 of time and space, and our judgment. 00:22:13.49\00:22:15.97 And for people who drive or engage in any activity where 00:22:16.00\00:22:19.09 they might be using machinery or flying aircraft, or doing 00:22:19.12\00:22:22.35 things like that, marijuana can be a very serious drug. 00:22:22.39\00:22:25.59 So the advice is, leave it alone, aye? 00:22:25.62\00:22:27.89 Don't even experiment with it. 00:22:27.92\00:22:29.10 I would say definitely so; that this is not 00:22:29.13\00:22:31.37 a drug to be played with. 00:22:31.41\00:22:32.56 I think we'd be much better in our society without it. 00:22:32.59\00:22:36.22 What about the plants that produce caffeine? 00:22:36.25\00:22:39.37 Well, caffeine is an interesting substance, too. 00:22:39.40\00:22:41.77 It's been around for a long time, and it's probably one of 00:22:41.80\00:22:44.66 the drugs that is most used in the world actually. 00:22:44.69\00:22:48.39 Now you find caffeine in a variety of substances. 00:22:48.42\00:22:51.27 Coffee, of course, is a major source of caffeine for millions 00:22:51.30\00:22:54.69 of people; tea also. 00:22:54.72\00:22:56.12 The cola drinks have quite a lot of caffeine in them. 00:22:56.16\00:22:58.97 And there are alkaloids which are similar to caffeine 00:22:59.00\00:23:02.31 Theobromine, etc, which you will find even in chocolate. 00:23:02.34\00:23:05.22 But caffeine is a drug that people used for a stimulate, 00:23:05.25\00:23:08.89 to give them a lift. 00:23:08.92\00:23:09.89 And again, people may think that this isn't dangerous, 00:23:09.90\00:23:13.50 but again, evidence shows that too much caffeine can have a 00:23:13.53\00:23:17.35 very deleterious effect upon the body. 00:23:17.38\00:23:19.33 Does it have any relationship to stress? 00:23:19.36\00:23:22.52 Well, people will take caffeine, as in fact they will take a lot 00:23:22.55\00:23:26.92 of drugs, to overcome the stresses of life. 00:23:26.96\00:23:30.09 You know, people are always looking to chemical crutches. 00:23:30.12\00:23:32.75 If you've got a problem let's open the medicine chest 00:23:32.78\00:23:35.55 and find a pill or potion. 00:23:35.58\00:23:36.79 And that's why people tend to be into alcohol, into marijuana, 00:23:36.82\00:23:40.02 into caffeine, into many of these things to try and either 00:23:40.05\00:23:43.15 block life out or make life a little more exciting, 00:23:43.18\00:23:45.71 or something like that. 00:23:45.74\00:23:46.71 And I really think that when people are looking to chemicals 00:23:46.72\00:23:50.57 to solve their problems, they're really fooling themselves. 00:23:50.60\00:23:53.07 And even with caffeine, that this could have 00:23:53.10\00:23:55.93 a serious effect actually upon oxygen levels to the brain, 00:23:56.10\00:23:59.12 and can effect our motor performance. 00:23:59.15\00:24:00.70 So I really think that if people are looking for drugs to help 00:24:00.73\00:24:04.28 them with stress, they're looking in the wrong direction. 00:24:04.31\00:24:06.64 People would do much better looking to a balanced lifestyle, 00:24:06.67\00:24:09.63 getting a balance in the social, mental, physical, 00:24:09.66\00:24:12.58 and spiritual areas. 00:24:12.61\00:24:13.71 These are the sort of things that people should be 00:24:13.74\00:24:15.92 concentrating on. 00:24:15.95\00:24:16.93 Now medicines and drugs in that area have some place in 00:24:16.96\00:24:20.70 society, but they've got to be governed. 00:24:20.73\00:24:22.48 They've got to be controlled by competent people. 00:24:22.51\00:24:25.23 That we've gotten into this habit of self medication, 00:24:25.26\00:24:28.42 and people are taking so many pills, potions, drugs, and all 00:24:28.45\00:24:32.59 sorts of substances to try and help them cope. 00:24:32.62\00:24:35.05 And I really think that this isn't a positive way to behave. 00:24:35.08\00:24:38.50 So it's best to keep away from the regular cup of tea. 00:24:38.53\00:24:41.91 Well, I think even that, you know, people may get some 00:24:41.94\00:24:44.23 comfort from it, but even the cup of tea that people think is 00:24:44.26\00:24:48.30 quite harmless, that drug authorities, from instance, 00:24:48.33\00:24:51.38 New South Whales, and health authorities have shown that 00:24:51.41\00:24:53.80 beyond five cups a day, for instance, that's been 00:24:53.83\00:24:56.91 considered, even by the health authorities in this state, to be 00:24:56.94\00:25:00.28 a health risk. 00:25:00.31\00:25:02.29 So I think that we need to be very careful taking these sorts 00:25:02.32\00:25:06.22 of substances into our body. 00:25:06.25\00:25:07.58 Now let us talk about what we eat. 00:25:07.61\00:25:11.57 You know the Bible tells us to look after our bodies. 00:25:11.60\00:25:14.30 In I Corinthians, chapter 6, and in verse 19, it says: 00:25:14.33\00:25:17.83 Do you not know that your body is the temple of the 00:25:17.86\00:25:21.40 Holy Spirit which is in you, whom you have from God, 00:25:21.43\00:25:24.89 and you are not your own? 00:25:24.92\00:25:26.18 For you were brought at a price: therefore glorify God in your 00:25:26.21\00:25:30.17 body, and in your spirit, which are God's. 00:25:30.20\00:25:33.10 So not only your spirit, but your body belongs to God, 00:25:33.13\00:25:36.27 and God expects you to look after it. 00:25:36.30\00:25:37.94 And, more specifically, it says in I Corinthians 10, and in 00:25:37.97\00:25:42.08 verse 31: Therefore whether you eat, or drink, or whatever 00:25:42.11\00:25:47.69 you do, do all to the glory of God. 00:25:47.72\00:25:50.63 Carolyn Laredo is an officer in the diet office of a leading 00:25:50.66\00:25:56.94 Sydney hospital, so she'll be a good one to talk to about 00:25:56.97\00:26:00.92 dietary matters. 00:26:00.95\00:26:02.36 Carolyn, just how important is diet to health? 00:26:02.39\00:26:05.69 Well, there's an adage that's very appropriate to answer 00:26:05.72\00:26:09.66 that question, David. 00:26:09.69\00:26:10.66 "We are what we eat. " 00:26:10.67\00:26:12.68 Diet is extremely important to our health. 00:26:12.71\00:26:15.45 Really, what we put into our bodies is what determines what 00:26:15.48\00:26:20.65 we can get out of them. 00:26:20.68\00:26:21.80 And what are the principles of a good diet? 00:26:21.83\00:26:23.88 Well, there's a lot of things that contribute to us having 00:26:23.91\00:26:27.43 a good diet. 00:26:27.46\00:26:28.82 It's important that we have regular meals; that they be 00:26:28.85\00:26:31.94 set at a time suitable for each particular individual. 00:26:31.97\00:26:36.11 We need a lot of variety. 00:26:36.14\00:26:38.42 And we need to be aware of things like obesity; 00:26:38.45\00:26:41.18 particularly because that is a very big problem in our 00:26:41.21\00:26:46.40 society today. 00:26:46.43\00:26:47.40 We need to decrease fat, sugar, alcohol, and salt. 00:26:47.41\00:26:52.07 We find that a lot of people that might have high intake 00:26:52.10\00:26:57.14 of these things 00:26:57.17\00:26:58.41 We need to increase our dietary fiber, and have a lot of fruit 00:26:58.44\00:27:03.15 and vegetables. 00:27:03.18\00:27:04.15 Fresh fruit and vegetables are really the best things 00:27:04.16\00:27:06.90 that you can eat. 00:27:06.93\00:27:07.90 I'm sure. 00:27:07.91\00:27:08.88 We need a variety which is the big thing in a vegetarian diet. 00:27:08.89\00:27:13.71 It cannot be emphasized enough because without variety you are 00:27:13.74\00:27:19.42 not including everything that your body needs. 00:27:19.45\00:27:23.85 But the vegetarian diet, with that variety, 00:27:23.88\00:27:27.95 does include everything. 00:27:27.98\00:27:30.73 But, of course, good health is not only a matter of abstaining 00:27:30.76\00:27:34.19 from what is harmful, it is doing what is good. 00:27:34.22\00:27:37.51 And that not only involves having a good, solid diet; 00:27:37.54\00:27:41.74 a good, healthy diet, everything is involved. 00:27:41.77\00:27:45.52 You should have good rest at night. 00:27:45.55\00:27:48.94 You should breathe plenty of fresh air, drink plenty of 00:27:48.97\00:27:53.28 fresh water, and I think that exercise is also an important 00:27:53.31\00:27:58.28 element for good health. 00:27:58.31\00:27:59.61 Beautiful game for an old fellow. 00:28:09.65\00:28:10.90 Well, my son beat me again, of course. 00:28:12.56\00:28:15.47 He usually does these days, but I got my exercise. 00:28:15.50\00:28:19.74 I really enjoy a game of tennis. 00:28:19.77\00:28:21.57 And I think the reason I can keep up with my boys is because 00:28:21.60\00:28:25.18 of my lifestyle. 00:28:25.21\00:28:26.20 I don't drink. 00:28:26.23\00:28:27.22 I don't smoke. 00:28:27.25\00:28:28.22 I don't use tea or coffee. 00:28:28.23\00:28:29.92 I've got a wonderful wife who turns on some great 00:28:29.95\00:28:32.06 vegetarian meals. 00:28:32.09\00:28:33.31 And I really get the most out of life. 00:28:33.34\00:28:36.48 Well, what about you? 00:28:36.51\00:28:38.19 Do you have something there that should go? 00:28:38.22\00:28:41.41 I think we've all got to get a good lifestyle, you know. 00:28:41.44\00:28:44.96 And if there's anything that you need to get rid of, well, 00:28:44.99\00:28:48.12 why not get rid of it now? 00:28:48.15\00:28:49.46 You'll not only live longer, but you'll get far more out of life. 00:28:49.49\00:28:54.79 Unbelievable! 00:28:59.87\00:29:02.17 Now I'm going to let you into a little secret. 00:29:02.20\00:29:04.31 David's into his 70th year! 00:29:04.34\00:29:07.58 So maybe that healthy lifestyle really does pay dividends! 00:29:07.61\00:29:11.91 Have you ever noticed that our Jewish friends are usually quite 00:29:11.94\00:29:17.05 prosperous folk? 00:29:17.08\00:29:18.45 Well I don't know the secret of their prosperity today, 00:29:18.48\00:29:21.85 but I do know the secret of the prosperity of Abraham, 00:29:21.88\00:29:26.02 the father of the Jewish nation. 00:29:26.05\00:29:28.10 In our next program we'll be visiting Ur of the Chaldees, 00:29:28.13\00:29:32.44 Abraham's hometown. 00:29:32.47\00:29:34.35 We'll be investigating his finances and revealing the 00:29:34.38\00:29:38.19 exciting story of Ur; how it was lost, forgotten, and found 00:29:38.22\00:29:43.14 again recently by archeologists. 00:29:43.17\00:29:45.36 It's a really interesting story. 00:29:45.39\00:29:47.32 Why don't you join us then? 00:29:47.35\00:29:49.23
