We've arrived in Ancient Shiloh and on the road here 00:00:01.98\00:00:04.88 we pass the sign, which has been here for a very 00:00:05.01\00:00:07.95 long time. It's a track leading through to an Arab 00:00:08.04\00:00:11.16 village, but since the Israelis have constructed 00:00:11.28\00:00:14.41 curbstone, here they have laid a tarseal road. 00:00:14.74\00:00:17.87 The reason where here is that this is the site, 00:00:18.43\00:00:20.67 where the Israelites erected the first sanctuary, 00:00:20.78\00:00:23.51 when they've arrived in the promise land. 00:00:23.81\00:00:25.72 Recently some archeological excavations have found 00:00:26.33\00:00:29.21 some very definite proof to backup the Bible story. 00:00:29.24\00:00:32.72 As recently as 1986, archeologist Israel 00:01:09.43\00:01:14.08 Finkelstein had a report published in the Biblical 00:01:14.21\00:01:17.52 archeology review in which he reported his 00:01:17.72\00:01:20.84 excavations here at Shiloh and they provide us with 00:01:20.87\00:01:25.41 some very interesting evidence especially in 00:01:25.50\00:01:27.93 relationship to the Biblical account, but in order first 00:01:28.07\00:01:32.00 to be able to understand what it's all about, I think 00:01:32.03\00:01:34.03 I better explain to you something about archeology. 00:01:34.23\00:01:36.56 You know, whenever I come to Middle East and, 00:01:37.55\00:01:40.11 I'm involved in the excavations and get back 00:01:40.65\00:01:42.91 home again. I suppose you can guess the question my 00:01:43.03\00:01:46.47 friends asked me as soon as they meet me. Hey, did 00:01:46.54\00:01:49.24 you find anything? What did you find? And I say, 00:01:49.35\00:01:51.89 yes, yes we found lot of things, lot of broken pottery. 00:01:52.05\00:01:54.52 And I said big deal is that or you went to the Middle 00:01:55.42\00:01:57.50 East for? But you see, archeologists are not 00:01:57.53\00:02:01.16 looking for treasures. Okay, it's very nice if you find a 00:02:01.29\00:02:05.73 golden vase or Alabaster God or something, but really 00:02:05.84\00:02:08.96 that's not we are looking for? And that is not what 00:02:09.48\00:02:12.76 provides us with the information we need, we are 00:02:13.08\00:02:16.17 trying to reconstruct history. Archeologists are 00:02:16.33\00:02:19.98 digging up the past and they're trying to 00:02:20.40\00:02:23.09 reconstruct the past. Now, in order to understand just 00:02:23.21\00:02:26.54 how it all works? I'll need to explain it from a 00:02:27.01\00:02:29.91 diagram, but first I have to explain to you what is I 00:02:30.07\00:02:34.12 Tell? The word Tell is the name given to a deserted 00:02:34.21\00:02:39.31 mound or sometimes it's even still occupy in the 00:02:39.53\00:02:41.85 Middle East in those plenty of these Tells. And this is 00:02:42.00\00:02:44.49 how all happen, you see in ancient time's cities or 00:02:44.52\00:02:49.97 villages were usually built on low hills for defensive 00:02:50.04\00:02:53.35 purposes. It was much easier to defend if the 00:02:53.52\00:02:56.52 enemy had to come up the side of a hill, you saved to 00:02:56.60\00:02:59.37 attack a town or city. Well, people living on such a 00:02:59.41\00:03:03.54 low hill would build their houses here, let's illustrate 00:03:03.86\00:03:07.26 it this way and by would have the floor level like 00:03:07.44\00:03:11.92 that and in those days of course there were no 00:03:12.07\00:03:15.07 garbologists or rubbish collectors and so whatever 00:03:15.19\00:03:19.00 rubbish they had broken pottery or bit some pieces, 00:03:19.06\00:03:22.71 dust and rubbish were just thrown at the front door. 00:03:22.76\00:03:26.31 Well, you can imagine what happened? Little by little 00:03:26.39\00:03:29.08 the street level outside began to rise and eventually 00:03:29.18\00:03:34.83 it reached the height of the floor level of the 00:03:34.86\00:03:37.52 house. So, guess what happened when there was a 00:03:37.64\00:03:39.85 downpour of rain. Well, let's when momma caught 00:03:40.13\00:03:43.17 hold of papa, and screwed his ear and said listen you 00:03:43.33\00:03:45.36 got to do something about that because all the rain is 00:03:45.47\00:03:47.50 coming in the front door. So, good obliging papa did 00:03:47.62\00:03:50.70 something what he did was simply to rise the floor 00:03:50.76\00:03:53.32 level bringing some more earth and rise the floor 00:03:53.37\00:03:56.19 level. And that was fine for a while, but of course the 00:03:56.43\00:04:00.07 rubbish still began to accumulate and so the whole 00:04:00.14\00:04:03.24 thing happened again here see. And sometimes the 00:04:03.47\00:04:05.97 wall collapse, sometimes the roof fell in, all they did 00:04:06.02\00:04:09.21 was simply level it off and build on top. And so the 00:04:09.31\00:04:13.64 level of this whole hill began to rise and in 00:04:14.08\00:04:18.77 different periods of the history of this tell or hill. 00:04:19.30\00:04:23.20 We have what we called archeological strata and it 00:04:23.93\00:04:27.18 goes this way. First of all was the period when they 00:04:27.31\00:04:31.18 used stone implements, stone axes, stone knives, 00:04:31.70\00:04:35.77 and stone pots and vessels you see and so it's called 00:04:36.07\00:04:38.86 the stone age or, it is know as the Lithic period. 00:04:38.89\00:04:41.84 Now, usually this is given a date for the beginning of 00:04:43.68\00:04:46.63 this something like 200,000 BC. Some people even 00:04:46.73\00:04:51.69 put it to two million. This is pure supposition and 00:04:51.89\00:04:54.70 identical along with this, but I'm telling you what is 00:04:54.75\00:04:56.70 usually considered to be then man began to discover 00:04:56.76\00:05:01.90 how to use copper milk pot, copper. And so we have 00:05:01.97\00:05:06.05 the beginning of the bronze or copper period and little 00:05:06.11\00:05:10.06 by little we have and in the mingling and so we have 00:05:10.21\00:05:12.41 what is known as the Chalcolithic period when you 00:05:12.57\00:05:15.37 have both copper and stone, and then bronze became 00:05:15.49\00:05:21.01 more common and so we have beginning of what we 00:05:21.23\00:05:23.36 called the Bronze Age. First of all, there was the early 00:05:23.58\00:05:26.63 Bronze Age, which is usually dated about 3100 BC 00:05:27.17\00:05:33.22 and then we have the middle Bronze Age, which 00:05:34.02\00:05:38.33 is usually dated, dated to about 2100 BC and then we 00:05:38.36\00:05:44.80 have the light bronze period, which is usually 00:05:44.83\00:05:49.23 dated to about 1550 BC and then we have the iron 00:05:49.39\00:05:55.54 age, which is usually dated to about 1200 BC 00:05:55.64\00:06:02.32 and then of course we have start of building up on top 00:06:02.35\00:06:05.45 of that. Well, now when an archeologist sink so shaft 00:06:05.48\00:06:09.82 down here or a trench down here, he exposes all these 00:06:09.95\00:06:16.80 different strata and from the type of pottery that he 00:06:16.87\00:06:20.51 sees in each stratum, he can determine which stratum 00:06:20.65\00:06:24.79 he is working in. Now, the why he can do that is 00:06:25.19\00:06:28.41 because of the different pottery styles you see 00:06:28.55\00:06:31.70 fashion is changed and so an archeologist can identify 00:06:31.99\00:06:36.51 the different styles for instance sometimes they 00:06:36.54\00:06:38.95 just had little rounded pots like this with, with flat 00:06:39.39\00:06:43.09 bottoms on them and then by learn they put handles 00:06:43.31\00:06:47.11 on them and make them a little ornamented, 00:06:47.14\00:06:50.61 you know, put scratches and designs on them. 00:06:50.75\00:06:52.82 Then there was a period when they use pots with 00:06:53.20\00:06:55.68 pointed in like this you might say, well they fall 00:06:56.43\00:06:59.35 over wouldn't they? No, they had a little hole in 00:06:59.50\00:07:02.41 the, in the houses floor and it just sat there or maybe 00:07:02.47\00:07:07.49 they had a piece of wood with a hole in it and they 00:07:07.52\00:07:09.65 just sat it like that, you say not very convenient, 00:07:09.68\00:07:12.90 but nevertheless that's the way they did it you see, 00:07:13.03\00:07:15.04 so when an archeologist finds a piece of pottery 00:07:15.12\00:07:18.80 from any of these he can say right I know where it 00:07:18.97\00:07:21.18 is, what age it is you see. Now, another very good 00:07:21.31\00:07:24.07 method of determining it is, if you can find them oil 00:07:24.14\00:07:28.05 lamps. Now at first, there were just round saucers 00:07:28.13\00:07:31.01 with a wick on the side you see and oil there. 00:07:31.32\00:07:33.80 Later on the potters learned to pinch up like that you 00:07:34.17\00:07:37.34 see and put the wick here with the oil in there. 00:07:37.42\00:07:40.89 Then they got a little more refined and they made the 00:07:41.24\00:07:44.66 top enclosed like this with the spout. And then they 00:07:44.85\00:07:48.99 got the idea of making designs on it. So, you see 00:07:49.04\00:07:51.97 how fashion is changed and so when the archeologist 00:07:52.11\00:07:56.28 finds these different pieces of pottery here, he can say 00:07:56.51\00:08:00.31 right, this is the early bronze and this is the 00:08:00.45\00:08:02.14 middle bronze, but what he cannot tell is the exact 00:08:02.23\00:08:07.36 date of these. The only way he can date any of these 00:08:07.46\00:08:11.33 potteries by relating it to the chronology of Egypt. 00:08:11.42\00:08:15.93 And so if he finds something in the early bronze he 00:08:17.12\00:08:20.14 says oh, well the early bronze period in Egypt 00:08:20.30\00:08:22.57 began about 3100 BC and the middle bronze here, 00:08:22.67\00:08:26.82 well the problem is this. If Egyptian chronology is 00:08:27.37\00:08:31.17 correct that's fine, you have got the right dates 00:08:31.37\00:08:33.01 here, but if there is a mistake in Egyptian 00:08:33.07\00:08:35.67 chronology as I believe there is, well in these 00:08:35.91\00:08:38.68 dates are gonna be wrong to and that is why we come 00:08:38.77\00:08:41.40 to Shiloh and notice the interesting discovery that 00:08:41.43\00:08:44.81 was made recently here in the excavations. You see, 00:08:45.01\00:08:48.96 according to this line up here, the Exodus took 00:08:49.17\00:08:54.24 place 1445 BC or the invasion of Palestine 00:08:54.32\00:08:59.45 1405 BC and that would place it in the light bronze 00:08:59.50\00:09:04.42 period, but in the excavations in Shiloh, 00:09:04.55\00:09:07.94 no evidence of occupation was found there during the 00:09:08.59\00:09:12.70 light bronze period. There was however evidence of 00:09:12.73\00:09:17.04 a century during the middle bronze period. 00:09:17.14\00:09:20.65 Now, I consider that is where the Israelite invasion 00:09:21.26\00:09:24.71 took place. In other words, I consider these dates need 00:09:24.86\00:09:27.36 to be shortened and the Israelite invasion took 00:09:27.45\00:09:30.47 place in 2100 BC then if we accept that reconstruction 00:09:30.65\00:09:35.39 we have exactly what we are looking for evidence 00:09:35.98\00:09:38.36 of a sanctuary in Shiloh in the middle bronze period. 00:09:38.86\00:09:43.56 Well, now the important thing about these 00:09:44.72\00:09:46.86 excavations and these men did a wonderful job by the 00:09:47.09\00:09:49.24 way I, I personally think they did a great job here 00:09:49.31\00:09:51.26 in Shiloh and they established the identification 00:09:52.08\00:09:56.77 of the various strata and that's very important. 00:09:56.94\00:09:59.20 You see, by finding pieces of pottery here friends this 00:09:59.65\00:10:04.83 is a piece here of a large jar; they can identify which 00:10:04.86\00:10:09.85 particular period it comes from. And it is my personal 00:10:10.08\00:10:13.84 opinion that the Israelite invasion took place at the 00:10:13.94\00:10:18.36 end of the early bronze period that would be about 00:10:18.39\00:10:20.46 1400 BC and that being the case this just fits in with 00:10:20.58\00:10:25.18 what I found in the excavations. You, you just 00:10:25.36\00:10:27.63 wouldn't believe it, it just so supportive of the Biblical 00:10:27.73\00:10:31.89 record. Now, here in Shiloh, if I'm correct in this 00:10:32.06\00:10:36.11 middle bronze period, we would expect to find 00:10:36.21\00:10:38.67 evidence that there was a sanctuary here, that this is 00:10:38.95\00:10:41.73 where the place of worship was and this is exactly 00:10:41.76\00:10:44.43 what they found. Listen I read it to you from this 00:10:44.53\00:10:47.52 report, which they have made and it says here on 00:10:47.69\00:10:52.79 page 39 of the report, I think it is here, here we 00:10:52.97\00:10:55.54 go. There are accumulating indications of Celtic 00:10:55.69\00:11:00.07 continuity at the site from the middle bronze to period 00:11:00.59\00:11:05.09 onward. A sanctuary probably stood here as early 00:11:05.27\00:11:09.67 as the middle bronze age. Do you see, how that fits 00:11:10.04\00:11:13.29 in. So, if that is correct and of course the 00:11:13.37\00:11:16.93 archeologists right spot on there, if that is correct well 00:11:16.96\00:11:20.44 then that is exactly what we would expect to find. 00:11:20.73\00:11:22.56 A sanctuary here, now somebody might say, yes but 00:11:22.80\00:11:26.02 that was probably a Canaanite sanctuary that 00:11:26.17\00:11:28.59 was here before the Israelites turned up, I don't 00:11:28.76\00:11:31.48 accept that. Do you mean to say that the Israelites 00:11:31.51\00:11:34.45 would choose a place that was already a place of 00:11:34.56\00:11:38.17 worship for Heathen religion and so right we would 00:11:38.23\00:11:41.63 put God sanctuary here. I, I just can't see that and so 00:11:41.66\00:11:45.59 here the first evidence of occupation is in the middle 00:11:45.93\00:11:48.52 bronze period and I would say that is where 00:11:48.55\00:11:51.81 the Israelites came and pitched their sanctuary 00:11:51.86\00:11:54.63 right here. Here is the model of the sanctuary, 00:11:54.97\00:11:58.77 which Mr. Winterton has made, he has done a 00:11:58.89\00:12:00.89 beautiful job, don't you think it's all made 00:12:01.17\00:12:02.78 according to scale and it's according to the Biblical 00:12:02.90\00:12:06.78 dimensions. He himself is laid in the high priest 00:12:06.94\00:12:10.01 robes and they were very beautiful, aren't they? 00:12:10.11\00:12:12.36 And these also according to the Biblical instructions, 00:12:12.39\00:12:15.24 I'll explain all about that in a little while, but first 00:12:15.48\00:12:18.22 of all just let's have a look at the sanctuary and 00:12:18.25\00:12:20.79 its invariance. This was originally erected of course 00:12:20.82\00:12:24.51 at the foot of Mount Sinai, later on as the Israelites 00:12:24.67\00:12:27.63 travel alone, they took this with them, it could be 00:12:27.66\00:12:30.38 completely dismantle and carried by certain priests, 00:12:30.51\00:12:33.22 which were allocated to the task and re-erected it 00:12:33.25\00:12:36.72 each site. Then the Israelites and their twelve 00:12:37.11\00:12:40.64 tribes came around about all in the prescribed place, 00:12:40.76\00:12:44.41 they had their standards under which they assembled 00:12:44.70\00:12:47.36 and pitch their tents all in a very orderly way. 00:12:47.69\00:12:50.42 And then we noticed that on the outside here there 00:12:51.03\00:12:55.54 was linen clothes going right around the outside 00:12:55.57\00:13:00.64 on portable poles and this courtyard was altogether 00:13:00.67\00:13:07.13 a 100 cubits long and 50 cubits wide. Now, for your 00:13:07.70\00:13:11.48 information a cubit is approximately half a meter, 00:13:11.53\00:13:14.76 so that meant that you have got a distance of about 50 00:13:15.32\00:13:18.00 meters along here and at the front there was an 00:13:18.14\00:13:21.69 entrance here and the people could come in here, 00:13:21.85\00:13:25.32 priests would come in here daily for their official 00:13:25.37\00:13:27.62 functions and so we now transfer our attention to 00:13:27.69\00:13:32.31 what was inside it. And I will ask Mr. Winterton if he 00:13:32.46\00:13:34.67 just like to remove the gateway or curtain at the 00:13:34.84\00:13:38.46 front there, right thank you very much. 00:13:38.69\00:13:40.82 Now, we can see the altar of sacrifice. This was a big 00:13:41.47\00:13:46.46 bronze altar and on this the daily sacrifice was 00:13:46.91\00:13:51.62 offered a bit, 9 o' clock in the morning 3 o' clock 00:13:51.70\00:13:53.79 every afternoon, there was a lamb or a sheep was 00:13:54.08\00:13:58.55 offered here as a sacrifice and it was completely 00:13:58.69\00:14:01.67 consumed, symbolizing the nations dedication to 00:14:01.70\00:14:05.28 Yahweh or Jehovah and also day by day people who 00:14:05.79\00:14:11.24 felt the sense of guilt and who wanted to show their 00:14:11.81\00:14:14.97 faith in the forgiving love of God would bring along a 00:14:15.17\00:14:19.58 lamb or a goat or some sacrifice here, poor people 00:14:19.81\00:14:22.73 even were allowed to bring along a pigeon and so 00:14:22.81\00:14:26.74 they could bring these sacrifices along here, 00:14:26.86\00:14:29.05 the sinner would lay his hands on the head of the 00:14:29.53\00:14:32.05 sacrifice and then he himself was obliged to slay 00:14:32.20\00:14:36.03 the animal and then the blood was transferred inside 00:14:36.15\00:14:39.40 and the fat of that animal was burnt up on the out of 00:14:39.47\00:14:43.43 the animal itself was disposed of outside the 00:14:43.46\00:14:45.72 sanctuary. Now, beyond that in between the altar of 00:14:45.86\00:14:51.16 sacrifice and the sanctuary itself there was a liver and 00:14:51.30\00:14:56.06 this was a liver that contain water, so that the 00:14:56.18\00:14:59.00 priests before going into the sanctuary very important 00:14:59.17\00:15:01.73 they cleanse their bodies and so before approaching 00:15:01.90\00:15:06.74 God they had to be physically clean as well as 00:15:06.88\00:15:08.78 spiritually pure. And so they washed there and 00:15:08.81\00:15:11.90 then they went into the sanctuary. Now, the 00:15:12.02\00:15:14.29 sanctuary itself was covered by four layers of 00:15:14.45\00:15:20.71 diamonds, cloth what shall we call them and I'm 00:15:21.05\00:15:24.27 going to ask Mr. Winterton to take these off one by 00:15:24.30\00:15:26.84 one. Now, this first one was made of seal skins. 00:15:26.98\00:15:31.23 And this of course waterproof and so it kept 00:15:31.29\00:15:34.29 the sanctuary dry in time of rain because they did 00:15:34.50\00:15:37.52 get rain there you know, and then there was some 00:15:37.63\00:15:42.24 rammed skins died red and that was the next 00:15:42.57\00:15:46.38 covering, thank you, and then the next one was 00:15:46.52\00:15:50.76 of goat hair, the tents are still made of that you know 00:15:51.01\00:15:54.07 in the Middle East today. Palestine, they still make 00:15:54.25\00:15:56.61 their tents of goat's hair and so there was this 00:15:56.66\00:15:59.05 goat's hair covering and finally there was the pure 00:15:59.56\00:16:02.47 white linen garment, which covered the hall of the 00:16:02.86\00:16:06.39 sanctuary. So, there were these four coverings of the 00:16:06.66\00:16:09.73 sanctuary building itself. Now, the building itself was 00:16:09.83\00:16:13.77 30 cubits long and 10 cubits wide and 10 cubits high. 00:16:14.11\00:16:20.48 This building also was made of wood, covered with 00:16:21.11\00:16:23.97 gold plate and this also was portable it could be 00:16:24.40\00:16:28.00 completely dismantled and carried by the appropriate 00:16:28.26\00:16:30.65 priests and then reassembled at the site on which it 00:16:30.83\00:16:34.39 was pitched. And inside the sanctuary incidentally 00:16:34.65\00:16:37.75 there were a curtain, there was a curtain here, 00:16:37.80\00:16:40.26 thank you Mr. Winterton, if you would like to take 00:16:40.43\00:16:41.86 that off. There was two vales or curtains, one was 00:16:41.94\00:16:45.34 at the entrance of the sanctuary and the other 00:16:45.37\00:16:48.16 one was into the inner apartment of the sanctuary. 00:16:48.19\00:16:51.77 Now, there with these two apartments the first one 00:16:52.49\00:16:55.44 was 20 cubits by 10 cubits and it had three articles of 00:16:55.58\00:16:59.32 furniture in and the other one was 10 cubits by 10 00:16:59.37\00:17:02.42 cubits and this just had one item of furniture 00:17:02.60\00:17:06.40 inside. Now, so that we can get a better look at 00:17:06.57\00:17:08.87 this remember it's portable we just gonna lift 00:17:08.95\00:17:12.26 the whole sanctuary building up, thank you, and 00:17:12.43\00:17:18.56 then we can see inside. First we notice a table here 00:17:18.59\00:17:21.86 called the table of showbread. Now, this had 12 00:17:21.98\00:17:24.95 loaves of bread on it, which were replaced every 00:17:25.06\00:17:28.22 Sabbath. They symbolized the 12 tribes of Israel then 00:17:28.32\00:17:34.26 over on this side were the seven golden candle 00:17:34.42\00:17:37.45 sticks and they were burning continuously, 00:17:37.57\00:17:40.67 they had oil in them running from inside and they had 00:17:41.28\00:17:45.80 wicks and high priests came in here everyday and 00:17:45.96\00:17:49.34 trim the wicks and filled up the oil, so as to keep these 00:17:49.55\00:17:53.65 lights burning setup. Then here was an altar of 00:17:53.93\00:17:58.05 incense and here again the high priests came in 00:17:58.22\00:18:00.91 here every morning and every evening at the time of 00:18:00.97\00:18:03.10 the morning and evening sacrifice and he burned 00:18:03.15\00:18:07.25 insects on this altar, this incense used to curl up and 00:18:07.47\00:18:11.22 go into the inner apartment of the sanctuary and so 00:18:11.33\00:18:14.53 the incense here represented the prayers that were 00:18:14.58\00:18:18.45 being offered by the people who are outside waiting 00:18:18.61\00:18:21.41 for the priest to perform his duties. Now, let us look 00:18:21.45\00:18:25.17 at the item on the inside of the sanctuary in the 00:18:25.20\00:18:28.09 inner apartment and that is the ark of the covenant 00:18:28.20\00:18:32.11 or the ark of the testament, it was a 00:18:32.23\00:18:34.39 wooden box gilded with gold and inside where the 00:18:34.43\00:18:38.93 two tables of the law the Ten Commandments that 00:18:39.09\00:18:42.02 had been written with the finger of God on Mount 00:18:42.36\00:18:45.34 Sinai. And on the top of the Ark of the Covenant, 00:18:45.51\00:18:48.97 there were two beautiful golden angels with wings 00:18:49.51\00:18:52.90 outstretched reaching over and touching each other. 00:18:53.01\00:18:56.46 And so that was the only item of furniture in the 00:18:56.87\00:19:00.05 inner apartment of the sanctuary. Now the high 00:19:00.28\00:19:02.44 priest only went in their once a year, but a very 00:19:02.60\00:19:07.31 significant service and will be explaining that in our 00:19:07.47\00:19:10.62 next subject, the next topic. Now, the high priest 00:19:10.91\00:19:13.87 garments were very beautiful and I would like to 00:19:14.09\00:19:16.56 explain them to you. The high priest must have made 00:19:16.76\00:19:19.99 a very impressive side you know, his God given robes 00:19:20.19\00:19:23.77 and they were God given you know, because God 00:19:23.85\00:19:25.85 specified everything that the high priest had to wear, 00:19:25.94\00:19:28.91 it was all given through Moses. On top here it is on 00:19:29.06\00:19:32.89 his head, he had a crown, it's full of mattering the Old 00:19:32.96\00:19:37.03 King James version, but it is simply a covering for his 00:19:37.18\00:19:40.88 head and a band round here, which said holiness 00:19:41.02\00:19:44.58 to the Lord indicating that his thoughts were also to 00:19:44.70\00:19:48.28 be holy and God site. Then he had on here a 00:19:48.37\00:19:53.65 breastplate in which there were 12 beautiful stones 00:19:53.69\00:19:57.68 and on each of those stones was inscribed the 00:19:58.21\00:19:59.99 names of one of the tribes of Israel indicating that he 00:20:00.24\00:20:04.10 bow this on this heart and then we have here a 00:20:04.49\00:20:08.65 Urim and Thummim. Now they were used to indicate 00:20:09.63\00:20:13.70 the good pleasure or the, the negative will of God, 00:20:13.73\00:20:17.99 if one lighted up, it was yes, if the other one had 00:20:18.72\00:20:21.34 a cloud on it, it was no and so answers could be 00:20:21.59\00:20:25.15 found when enquires were made from God. 00:20:25.25\00:20:27.56 Then behind that it is what is known as the Ephod, 00:20:28.25\00:20:31.38 and on the shoulder here there were two stones and 00:20:32.27\00:20:35.90 on these were inscribed the names of the 12 sons of 00:20:36.21\00:20:39.78 Israel. Then down here he had a beautiful blue 00:20:40.02\00:20:44.50 garment and this seems to be God's favorite color you 00:20:44.65\00:20:48.39 know, and I think there is a lot of significance in 00:20:48.59\00:20:49.98 this blue, it indicates a royal color that God has 00:20:50.01\00:20:54.06 and the Israelites also, where suppose to wear a 00:20:54.56\00:20:57.67 band of blue and then those this shashiya it's called a 00:20:57.93\00:21:03.12 curious girdle meaning it's a very special one. 00:21:03.64\00:21:07.06 And then of course he had his incense sensor, 00:21:07.81\00:21:11.95 which he wave before the Lord with the incense in 00:21:12.54\00:21:14.59 it and then right down at the bottom you will notice 00:21:14.65\00:21:17.13 there are some belts and little pompoms that were 00:21:17.36\00:21:21.54 representing pommie granites and as the high 00:21:21.72\00:21:23.98 priest walked, these belts would nod at tinkle, can I 00:21:24.03\00:21:27.10 too this Mr. Winterton, yeah, they must have been 00:21:27.28\00:21:30.31 very nice and so the people would know the high 00:21:30.65\00:21:33.55 priest movements as he moved around the sanctuary. 00:21:33.74\00:21:37.29 So then this is ancient Shiloh and this is where it all 00:21:38.26\00:21:41.50 happened, this is where the sanctuary of Israel was. 00:21:41.72\00:21:44.95 Later on of course when Solomon built his beautiful 00:21:45.65\00:21:48.34 temple on Mount Moriah, this whole sanctuary 00:21:48.44\00:21:51.35 concept was incorporated in Solomon's temple of 00:21:51.54\00:21:55.52 course what is there now, it's not Solomon's temple 00:21:55.55\00:21:58.96 it's the dime of the rock Muslim mosque the first 00:21:59.24\00:22:02.99 part of which was built in the 7 century AD. 00:22:03.09\00:22:05.93 But nevertheless that is where Solomon's temple 00:22:06.56\00:22:09.15 one stood. Now, what was the purpose of the 00:22:09.44\00:22:14.29 sanctuary why all these animals sacrifices, all this 00:22:14.55\00:22:18.35 blood letting, do we assume that God is a sort 00:22:18.86\00:22:22.50 an angry God that has to be appeased by the slang 00:22:22.53\00:22:25.52 of animals, no that's not the idea too. It was all 00:22:25.68\00:22:30.24 symbolic, typical all pointing forward to what 00:22:30.39\00:22:34.57 Jesus Christ was going to do for the human race. 00:22:34.80\00:22:37.33 You know, when Jesus went to the River Jordan, 00:22:38.34\00:22:41.13 John the baptize pointed to him and said, in John 00:22:42.14\00:22:45.27 1:29, "The next day John saw the Jesus coming 00:22:45.48\00:22:48.95 toward him and said, behold the Lamb of God, 00:22:49.11\00:22:51.98 who takes away the sin of the world." And you see 00:22:52.59\00:22:55.30 Jesus is referred to as the Lamb of God just the 00:22:55.44\00:22:58.22 sign of the sacrificial Lambs were offered and 00:22:58.32\00:23:01.28 innocent Lamb for a guilty victim, so Jesus 00:23:01.40\00:23:04.73 Christ died for the guilty sins of the world and that 00:23:04.96\00:23:09.71 was the very hard of the sanctuary service, but the 00:23:09.74\00:23:13.34 sanctuary itself was also highly symbolical, typical, 00:23:13.46\00:23:16.75 I'm here in the Book of Hebrews and in chapter 8 00:23:17.55\00:23:19.96 it says, "Now this is the main point of the things we 00:23:20.03\00:23:23.93 are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated 00:23:23.96\00:23:28.45 at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the 00:23:28.71\00:23:30.83 heavens, a Minister of the sanctuary and of the true 00:23:30.90\00:23:35.83 tabernacle which the Lord erected, and not man." 00:23:36.32\00:23:39.39 Now, that's interesting, isn't it? It tells us that 00:23:39.58\00:23:41.58 God made a sanctuary and really this sanctuary here 00:23:41.99\00:23:45.11 at Shiloh was really just a tiny little insignificant 00:23:45.14\00:23:49.10 model of that great sanctuary of God in heaven. 00:23:49.35\00:23:52.84 Of course, the temple of God in heaven is nothing 00:23:53.06\00:23:55.93 like this one here magnificent immense, 00:23:56.13\00:24:00.07 ten thousand times; ten thousands of angels can 00:24:01.22\00:24:03.80 crowd in there. So, this is gonna be a very small 00:24:03.94\00:24:07.05 model, but the temple is there alright. I'm reading 00:24:07.15\00:24:10.61 in Revelation chapter 15 and in verse 5 where it 00:24:10.73\00:24:13.55 says, After these things I looked and behold the 00:24:13.65\00:24:17.73 temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven 00:24:17.94\00:24:20.58 was opened. So, when John was carried up in the 00:24:20.66\00:24:23.57 heaven in vision, he saw this temple opened he 00:24:23.71\00:24:27.22 looked inside, it was a real temple I personally think 00:24:27.31\00:24:30.87 it was just as real and solid as the sanctuary that was 00:24:30.90\00:24:33.64 picture right here in Shiloh where that was built in 00:24:33.99\00:24:35.96 the temple of God in Jerusalem, it's a real place 00:24:35.99\00:24:39.20 heaven is very real to me. The things of eternity mean 00:24:39.87\00:24:42.86 something, they are very meaningful, very real, 00:24:42.96\00:24:45.20 alright. Now, John not only saw the temple opened, 00:24:46.01\00:24:48.90 but just the sign as the sanctuary on earth had 00:24:49.65\00:24:52.08 various articles of furniture. So, John saw the same 00:24:52.37\00:24:56.44 things in heaven. For instance in Revelation 00:24:56.53\00:24:58.82 chapter 1 and verse in 18 it says, here verse 12. 00:24:58.94\00:25:04.86 Then I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. 00:25:05.14\00:25:07.60 And having turned, I saw seven golden lamp stands. 00:25:08.13\00:25:12.58 So, just the same as there are seven lamps stands here 00:25:12.86\00:25:15.10 in the sanctuary on earth. John saw them right there 00:25:15.21\00:25:17.99 in heaven too. Not only that in Revelation chapter 8 00:25:18.04\00:25:22.27 and in verse 3, let's find it, yes. Then another angel 00:25:23.58\00:25:27.94 having a golden censer came and stood at the altar. 00:25:28.18\00:25:31.02 And he was given much incense that he should 00:25:31.55\00:25:33.85 offer, with the prayers of all the saints, upon the 00:25:34.02\00:25:35.90 golden altar, which was before the throne, shall 00:25:36.12\00:25:38.23 okay the sanctuary on earth had a golden altar of 00:25:38.31\00:25:41.07 incense there it was in heaven. So, the one on earth 00:25:41.23\00:25:43.92 was just a copy a little copy of the great altar in 00:25:44.01\00:25:47.96 heaven. And finally we notice the most important 00:25:48.20\00:25:51.31 feature of the earthly sanctuary was a copy of 00:25:51.70\00:25:55.44 that in heaven too listen, Revelation 11 and verse 19, 00:25:55.55\00:25:59.19 "Then the temple of God was opened in heaven and 00:25:59.79\00:26:03.08 the ark of his covenant was seen in his temple." 00:26:03.16\00:26:07.02 So, John saw it up there, there it was. So, you see 00:26:07.28\00:26:10.53 this sanctuary on earth was just a little model a type 00:26:10.67\00:26:15.36 of the great temple of God in heaven. I want you 00:26:15.73\00:26:19.09 to see the significance of what is here? Here is the 00:26:19.18\00:26:22.76 high priest wearing the names of the 12 types of 00:26:22.93\00:26:26.83 Israel on his heart. He has a responsibility for them. 00:26:27.00\00:26:31.20 He carries them on his heart and now remember this 00:26:31.77\00:26:34.81 high priest is a type or a symbol of a great high 00:26:35.12\00:26:39.45 priest in heaven Jesus Christ, who day by day is 00:26:39.54\00:26:43.02 looking after us and offer his sacrifice on our behalf 00:26:43.53\00:26:47.18 and he bares our names on his heart. Every one of you 00:26:47.71\00:26:52.51 he has got your name written there if you believe 00:26:53.23\00:26:55.00 in him, he has got your name there. You see it's 00:26:55.03\00:26:57.75 says here in Hebrews chapter 7 and in verse 25. 00:26:57.78\00:27:02.02 "Therefore he is able to save to the outermost those 00:27:02.62\00:27:06.84 who come to God through him, since he ever lives to 00:27:06.97\00:27:10.76 make intercession for us. You see, we need somebody 00:27:10.81\00:27:15.47 to intercede on our behalf we are sinners, we've done 00:27:15.69\00:27:19.21 things that are wrong, we deserve to be put to death, 00:27:19.32\00:27:21.87 but Jesus Christ died for our sins and so he steps in 00:27:22.67\00:27:26.45 between a loving God and the sinner and says, 00:27:26.83\00:27:30.76 I died for that person intercedes on our behalf 00:27:30.90\00:27:34.17 and it's not that God has reluctant to forgive us, 00:27:34.60\00:27:37.01 he is so happy when Jesus Christ is able to confess us 00:27:37.36\00:27:41.14 as his children. And the result, well it tells us here 00:27:41.56\00:27:45.42 in Hebrews chapter 4 and in verse 15. 00:27:45.45\00:27:48.68 "For we do not have a high priest who cannot 00:27:49.68\00:27:52.66 sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all 00:27:53.03\00:27:56.14 points tempted as we are yet without sin." 00:27:56.30\00:27:58.77 He knows what it is to be tempted he lived in this 00:27:58.89\00:28:00.88 world of temptation. "Let us therefore come boldly to 00:28:01.08\00:28:05.30 the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, 00:28:05.33\00:28:08.52 and find grace to help in time of need." 00:28:08.79\00:28:11.56 Don't be afraid to come to Christ. You might say, 00:28:12.36\00:28:14.67 oh yes, but I am a sinner, I have done so many bad 00:28:14.77\00:28:16.89 things I'm ashamed. Okay, you're the person who 00:28:17.05\00:28:20.09 needs Christ you can come pleading that Christ died 00:28:20.27\00:28:24.46 on your behalf and you can come boldly with your 00:28:24.61\00:28:26.65 prayers, you can say I stand before God just as if 00:28:26.78\00:28:29.85 I have never seen because Christ died for 00:28:29.88\00:28:31.93 my sins. This is what it means to 00:28:32.14\00:28:35.48 have a great high priest in heaven. 00:28:35.59\00:28:37.31 Well, that sounds encouraging maybe the 00:28:38.65\00:28:40.64 sanctuary truth is the key that unlocks the old Bible 00:28:40.85\00:28:43.94 prophecy in Daniel chapter 8, where it was told that 00:28:44.08\00:28:47.32 until 2300 days, and then shall the sanctuary be 00:28:47.47\00:28:51.59 cleansed. Daniel was given this prophecy in the 00:28:51.93\00:28:54.57 Old Persian town of Shushan and that's were we 00:28:54.74\00:28:57.66 will be taking you in the next program. 00:28:57.69\00:28:59.71
