In this program we discuss the question, Who is God? 00:00:01.98\00:00:04.92 When we look at the flowers, and birds, and the stars, 00:00:05.05\00:00:08.41 and our own marvelous bodies and minds, surely we must conclude 00:00:08.45\00:00:12.71 that there is a God. 00:00:12.74\00:00:14.38 But who is God? 00:00:14.41\00:00:16.34 Where is He, and what's He like? 00:00:16.37\00:00:18.04 Well, what does the Bible teach? 00:00:18.07\00:00:20.74 David has given us plenty of evidence that the Bible is a 00:00:20.77\00:00:24.33 book that God's inspired. 00:00:24.36\00:00:25.70 So what does God tell us about Himself? 00:00:25.73\00:00:29.10 Well, to answer that question we go next to Jerash. 00:00:29.13\00:00:33.93 This is the gateway to Jerash, the best preserved Roman ruins 00:01:04.83\00:01:09.66 in the Middle East. 00:01:09.69\00:01:10.92 Jerash was one of the ten cities of the Decapolis. 00:01:10.95\00:01:14.54 The word Decapolis means ten cities. 00:01:14.57\00:01:16.68 This was one of the prominent cities. 00:01:16.71\00:01:18.68 The gateway that you see behind me was built to commemorate the 00:01:18.71\00:01:23.63 visit of the Emperor Hadrian in the year 129 A.D. 00:01:23.66\00:01:28.53 In fact he spent a whole winter here. 00:01:28.57\00:01:30.72 An inscription around the back of the gateway tells us that it 00:01:30.75\00:01:34.73 was built and dedicated by a man by the name of Flavius Agrippa. 00:01:34.76\00:01:41.34 This is the Roman forum of Jerash. 00:01:42.55\00:01:45.89 It's quite a spectacular place; these beautiful big columns here 00:01:45.92\00:01:49.54 and behind this were shops. 00:01:49.57\00:01:52.14 The forum, you know, was where all the city activities used 00:01:52.17\00:01:55.83 to place; where the city fathers met together and deliberated. 00:01:55.86\00:01:59.75 If anyone had something to say, well this is where he came 00:01:59.78\00:02:02.35 to say it. 00:02:02.38\00:02:03.35 So this was a hive of activity. 00:02:03.36\00:02:06.79 Now a very remarkable thing about these pillars is that they 00:02:06.82\00:02:11.90 are built on a very thick wall. 00:02:11.93\00:02:13.92 That wall goes down ten meters. 00:02:13.95\00:02:17.15 You see, they didn't want their beautiful colonnade to 00:02:17.18\00:02:21.17 topple over. 00:02:21.20\00:02:22.17 And from here leads the main street of Jerash. 00:02:22.20\00:02:26.63 And what a beautiful street this was! 00:02:30.63\00:02:33.28 These great big limestone pillars here; do you know there 00:02:33.31\00:02:36.87 were 260 of them on each side of the street? 00:02:36.90\00:02:40.28 There were shops out there. 00:02:40.31\00:02:42.04 It was a real shopping plaza, you know, fashionable center. 00:02:42.07\00:02:44.69 This place was very well drained. 00:02:44.72\00:02:47.49 There's a drainage system running right along underneath. 00:02:47.52\00:02:49.60 In fact you can see here one of the man holes. 00:02:49.63\00:02:52.31 These could be removed and somebody could go down there 00:02:52.34\00:02:55.69 and crawl along underneath, and clean it out if there 00:02:55.72\00:02:58.28 was any blockage. 00:02:58.31\00:02:59.28 Chariots used to rumble along this street. 00:03:03.20\00:03:05.27 You can still see the rub marks. 00:03:05.30\00:03:07.05 See them here? 00:03:07.08\00:03:08.05 And if you think that traffic roundabouts are anything new, 00:03:08.06\00:03:12.47 well, think again, because at the intersection along there 00:03:12.50\00:03:15.83 of the roads they had one. 00:03:15.86\00:03:18.28 This is known as the nymphaeum because there were statues of 00:03:23.58\00:03:27.76 nymphs in the alcoves up there. 00:03:27.79\00:03:29.96 It must have been a beautiful sight. 00:03:29.99\00:03:32.49 Water gushed out of these holes that you can see, onto the 00:03:32.52\00:03:36.05 platform here, and down into this basin. 00:03:36.08\00:03:39.13 From here there were some carved lions. 00:03:39.16\00:03:41.80 The water came out of their mouths. 00:03:41.83\00:03:43.26 They are one of the beauty spots of the city of Jerash. 00:03:43.29\00:03:46.70 The Romans did not neglect the worship of the gods. 00:04:03.95\00:04:07.06 Over there was the temple of Zeus and here was the temple 00:04:07.09\00:04:11.33 of Artemis. 00:04:11.36\00:04:12.59 You know the goddess mentioned in the book of Acts in the Bible 00:04:12.62\00:04:16.37 as Diana of the Ephesians. 00:04:16.40\00:04:18.35 All of the Ephesians started shouting, Great is Diana 00:04:18.38\00:04:21.02 of the Ephesians. 00:04:21.05\00:04:22.02 Well, this was Artemis, and this is the very fine temple that 00:04:22.03\00:04:27.65 was devoted to her. 00:04:27.68\00:04:29.31 The Romans had to have their entertainment, of course. 00:04:32.69\00:04:35.23 This is one of two theaters in Jerash, and it's quite 00:04:35.26\00:04:39.15 a big one. 00:04:39.18\00:04:40.15 It holds four thousand people, and you could even 00:04:40.16\00:04:42.88 reserve your seats. 00:04:42.91\00:04:44.34 Down the front there are some Greek letters so that you could 00:04:44.37\00:04:48.42 identify which seat you'd reserved. 00:04:48.45\00:04:50.49 The acoustics in this place are marvelous. 00:04:50.52\00:04:52.97 You can just stand here and whisper and you'll hear it right 00:04:53.00\00:04:56.67 up on the top row. 00:04:56.70\00:04:57.79 Very early in the peace Christianity came to Jerash. 00:05:22.24\00:05:25.95 By the fourth century there was a very strong Christian 00:05:25.98\00:05:30.20 community here. 00:05:30.23\00:05:31.29 By the fifth century it had become the ruling religion. 00:05:31.32\00:05:34.39 In the sixth century there were no less than seven churches 00:05:34.42\00:05:37.79 built here. 00:05:37.82\00:05:38.79 But, of course, when the Muslims came they were very much opposed 00:05:38.80\00:05:43.48 to idols, or pictures, and they demolished a lot of the 00:05:43.51\00:05:48.13 beautiful mosaics. 00:05:48.16\00:05:49.40 This one escaped because it was partially buried by the time the 00:05:49.43\00:05:54.18 Muslims got here. 00:05:54.21\00:05:55.18 Well I suppose you're wondering what all this has to do with the 00:05:57.62\00:06:01.09 question, Who is God? 00:06:01.12\00:06:02.82 And, I suppose, that's a fair enough question. 00:06:02.85\00:06:06.48 Well, it is just possible that it was here in Jerash that 00:06:06.51\00:06:11.53 a Biblical parable was enacted. 00:06:11.56\00:06:14.07 Do you remember the story that Jesus Christ told of the 00:06:14.10\00:06:18.45 prodigal son? 00:06:18.48\00:06:19.45 Everyone's heard of the prodigal son. 00:06:19.46\00:06:21.15 The story was that there were two sons, and one of them came 00:06:21.18\00:06:25.01 to his father and said, Father, I want my share of the property. 00:06:25.04\00:06:30.05 So the father, being a very understanding father, 00:06:30.08\00:06:34.20 allowed him to have half of the property. 00:06:34.23\00:06:35.85 A few days later he picked up and left. 00:06:35.88\00:06:39.02 The Bible says he went to a far country. 00:06:39.05\00:06:42.21 Now we don't know where that far country was, but who knows, 00:06:42.24\00:06:45.79 it could have been right here in Jerash. 00:06:45.82\00:06:47.43 In which case, this is where he spent all his money. 00:06:47.46\00:06:51.00 This is where he went to all the entertainments, the brothels, 00:06:51.03\00:06:55.56 and pretty soon got rid of all his money. 00:06:55.59\00:06:59.27 But, of course, the time came when his money was all gone, 00:06:59.30\00:07:02.99 and with the money gone, so were the friends. 00:07:03.02\00:07:05.99 That's when he was obliged to go and get a job, and he finished 00:07:06.02\00:07:10.04 up just feeding pigs. 00:07:10.07\00:07:11.40 For a Jew; feeding pigs! 00:07:11.43\00:07:13.04 What a job! 00:07:13.07\00:07:14.04 Finally he said to himself, Well listen, this is a fools game. 00:07:14.05\00:07:17.66 My fathers hired servants are better off than I. 00:07:17.69\00:07:21.16 I'll go to my father and say to him, Father, I have sinned 00:07:21.19\00:07:25.26 against heaven, and against you. 00:07:25.29\00:07:27.30 I'm no more worthy to be called your son. 00:07:27.33\00:07:29.30 Just make me one of your hired servants. 00:07:29.33\00:07:31.46 Having made the decision, he packed up and went home. 00:07:31.49\00:07:34.36 Well, his father saw him coming afar off. 00:07:34.39\00:07:37.05 Father was looking for him, you know. 00:07:37.08\00:07:38.61 That tells you something about God. 00:07:38.64\00:07:40.36 When he saw his son coming he was just so thrilled. 00:07:40.39\00:07:43.36 He ran forward, fell on his neck, and kissed him, 00:07:43.39\00:07:46.01 embraced him, and called for the servants to bring forth 00:07:46.04\00:07:49.36 a good robe and put it on him. 00:07:49.39\00:07:51.03 The boy muttered out his words, you know, Father I've sinned 00:07:51.06\00:07:53.88 against heaven and against you. 00:07:53.91\00:07:55.21 I'm no longer worthy to be called your son. 00:07:55.24\00:07:57.54 But the father didn't want that. 00:07:57.57\00:07:59.38 He said, You are my son. 00:07:59.41\00:08:01.11 The son who was lost has returned. 00:08:01.14\00:08:03.97 So he clothed him with a beautiful garment and restored 00:08:04.00\00:08:08.67 him fully to the position of a son. 00:08:08.70\00:08:11.88 That tells you something about God, doesn't it? 00:08:11.91\00:08:13.77 To me God is very real. 00:08:15.06\00:08:17.74 I think He can be real to anyone because God is real. 00:08:17.77\00:08:22.35 What does the Bible teach about the nature of God? 00:08:22.38\00:08:26.31 It says in Matthew 28:19, Go therefore and make disciples 00:08:26.34\00:08:30.66 of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, 00:08:30.69\00:08:34.13 and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit... 00:08:34.16\00:08:37.65 Now that mentions three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, 00:08:37.68\00:08:41.63 sometimes referred to as the Trinity. 00:08:41.66\00:08:43.51 Some people say, Oh, this is where I get lost. 00:08:43.54\00:08:45.97 You know, the Trinity, you just can't fathom it. 00:08:46.00\00:08:48.01 I don't see any problem. 00:08:48.04\00:08:49.58 What does it mean by three in one? 00:08:49.61\00:08:51.65 Well, Jesus made it plain in John 17:11 when He said, 00:08:51.68\00:08:56.18 I come to you, Holy Father, keep through your name those 00:08:56.21\00:09:01.18 whom you have given me, that they may be one, as we are. 00:09:01.21\00:09:06.27 Now, you and I are two separate persons, aren't we? 00:09:06.30\00:09:09.37 And yet we can be one; perfectly united in thought, 00:09:09.40\00:09:13.63 in motivation, and in character. 00:09:13.66\00:09:16.13 And that's the way it is with God. 00:09:16.16\00:09:18.34 There are three distinct persons, but these three persons 00:09:18.37\00:09:22.53 are so perfectly united that they are one. 00:09:22.56\00:09:24.97 Not like the Hindu gods, or the Greek gods; always fighting 00:09:25.00\00:09:27.71 against each other, at cross purposes with each other. 00:09:27.74\00:09:30.66 No, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are perfectly united. 00:09:30.69\00:09:36.38 Now, does that mean then that God is not a Spirit, 00:09:36.41\00:09:41.06 or He is a Spirit? 00:09:41.09\00:09:42.08 Jesus said, God is a Spirit. 00:09:42.11\00:09:44.04 Yeah, sure! 00:09:44.07\00:09:45.23 But you see there is the person of the Father, there is the Son, 00:09:45.26\00:09:48.97 a separate person. 00:09:49.00\00:09:50.01 It says when Jesus ascended up to heaven He sat on the right 00:09:50.04\00:09:53.24 hand of the Father. 00:09:53.27\00:09:54.68 But there is also the Holy Spirit, who is present 00:09:54.71\00:09:57.62 everywhere in the Universe. 00:09:57.65\00:09:59.10 Now God has a real dwelling place. 00:09:59.13\00:10:02.18 I'm not talking about the Spirit, which is everywhere, 00:10:02.21\00:10:04.52 but the person of God Himself. 00:10:04.55\00:10:07.64 You know, when Solomon was praying in 1 Kings 8:30 he says, 00:10:07.67\00:10:13.80 May you hear the supplication of your servant, and of your people 00:10:13.83\00:10:18.50 Israel, when they pray toward this place: then hear in heaven 00:10:18.53\00:10:22.79 your dwelling place: and when you hear, forgive. 00:10:22.82\00:10:26.78 So God has a real dwelling place. 00:10:26.81\00:10:29.48 I think it's just as solid and real as the ground on which I am 00:10:29.51\00:10:33.09 standing at the present time. 00:10:33.12\00:10:35.21 So God is a real person, and heaven is a real place, 00:10:35.24\00:10:38.63 but by His Spirit He can be present everywhere. 00:10:38.66\00:10:42.68 Now God is likened to a father, not because God is male or 00:10:44.03\00:10:49.11 female, but simply because that is His nature. 00:10:49.14\00:10:52.53 Jesus taught us to pray, Our Father, which art in heaven... 00:10:52.56\00:10:56.60 So much for the Father. 00:10:56.63\00:10:58.37 What about the Son? 00:10:58.40\00:10:59.37 I want to tell you something you might not know. 00:10:59.38\00:11:01.81 That is revealed in John 1:1-3. 00:11:01.84\00:11:05.58 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, 00:11:05.61\00:11:10.46 and the Word was God. 00:11:10.49\00:11:12.72 He was in the beginning with God. 00:11:12.75\00:11:14.79 All things were made through him; and without him nothing 00:11:14.82\00:11:19.67 was made that was made. 00:11:19.70\00:11:21.90 Now it's talking about Jesus because over here in verse 14 00:11:21.93\00:11:25.80 it says, And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us,... 00:11:25.83\00:11:30.12 Don't get the idea that when Jesus was born in Bethlehem that 00:11:30.15\00:11:33.95 was the beginning of His existence. 00:11:33.98\00:11:35.52 Oh, no! 00:11:35.55\00:11:36.52 Jesus existed from all eternity. 00:11:36.56\00:11:39.03 He was one of the three persons of the Godhead. 00:11:39.06\00:11:42.54 From all eternity He was one with the Father. 00:11:42.57\00:11:45.53 It was through Him, Christ, that the world was created. 00:11:45.56\00:11:49.74 It is through Him that the world is upheld today. 00:11:49.77\00:11:53.67 And so He, God, became flesh and dwelt among us, 00:11:54.44\00:12:00.07 and He lived a man. 00:12:00.10\00:12:01.66 What an amazing condensation for the Creator to come down to 00:12:01.69\00:12:05.60 this world and be born as a little baby in Bethlehem, 00:12:05.63\00:12:07.91 and live a life on this world for thirty years, 00:12:07.94\00:12:10.81 and then enter upon His ministry. 00:12:10.84\00:12:13.81 After 31/2 years He was crucified. 00:12:13.84\00:12:16.57 He suffered a cruel death on the cross. 00:12:16.60\00:12:18.81 Why? 00:12:18.84\00:12:20.24 To take our place as sinners. 00:12:20.28\00:12:22.13 You see we've all done wrong. 00:12:22.16\00:12:23.20 We've all gone astray. 00:12:23.23\00:12:24.29 We all deserve to be punished, but we don't need to have any 00:12:24.32\00:12:28.41 sense of burden of guilt. 00:12:28.44\00:12:30.15 You know there's some people that have got some very heavy 00:12:30.18\00:12:32.70 burdens in this world. 00:12:32.73\00:12:33.77 We saw this man, for instance, in Jerusalem staggering along 00:12:33.80\00:12:37.76 carrying a refrigerator on his back. 00:12:37.79\00:12:40.66 There are some people who are carrying a heavier burden 00:12:40.69\00:12:43.71 than that; the burden of guilt, the burden of shame, 00:12:43.74\00:12:47.67 a sense of wrong, and they feel that they are unworthy. 00:12:47.70\00:12:50.78 Well, Jesus says in Matthew 11: 28, Come unto me all you that 00:12:50.81\00:12:58.29 labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 00:12:58.32\00:13:01.86 You see, He says to us, I've paid it. 00:13:01.89\00:13:04.15 I've paid the penalty for your sins. 00:13:04.18\00:13:06.13 So He throws His garment of righteousness about us, 00:13:06.16\00:13:09.94 just like the Father did to the prodigal, and we stand before 00:13:09.97\00:13:13.99 God in those beautiful garments of Christ's righteousness 00:13:14.02\00:13:17.27 just as if we'd never sinned. 00:13:17.30\00:13:18.87 That's why the Bible tells us to come boldly before the throne 00:13:18.90\00:13:23.87 of grace in prayer, because we can come clothed in Christ's 00:13:23.90\00:13:27.84 righteousness, and stand before Him fully accepted 00:13:27.87\00:13:31.46 as His children. 00:13:31.49\00:13:33.43 Well, something happened in Jerusalem that illustrates this 00:13:34.68\00:13:37.59 point that God does something for us that we don't 00:13:37.62\00:13:40.55 really deserve. 00:13:40.58\00:13:41.55 One early morning Jesus came to the temple and began to teach 00:13:50.30\00:13:54.07 the people, and they crowded in to hear His wonderful 00:13:54.10\00:13:56.51 words of life. 00:13:56.54\00:13:57.51 But right in the middle of His teaching the Pharisees arrived, 00:13:57.52\00:14:01.99 dragging a reluctant woman, and standing her right 00:14:02.02\00:14:04.73 in front of Him. 00:14:04.76\00:14:05.73 They piously said, Master, we found this woman 00:14:05.74\00:14:10.26 committing adultery; caught her in the very act. 00:14:10.29\00:14:12.58 Now Moses in his law said that such should be stoned, 00:14:12.61\00:14:17.25 but what do you say? 00:14:17.28\00:14:18.92 Now, you see, these fellows knew how ask some hard questions. 00:14:18.95\00:14:22.52 It was a loaded question, you see. 00:14:22.55\00:14:24.30 They thought they had Jesus trapped. 00:14:24.33\00:14:25.90 If Jesus had said, Well, okay, take her out and stone her 00:14:25.93\00:14:29.95 as Moses said, they would have immediately gone running off 00:14:29.98\00:14:32.54 to the Romans saying, He's usurping Roman authority. 00:14:32.57\00:14:35.96 On the other hand, if Jesus had said, No, don't stone her, 00:14:35.99\00:14:40.89 they would have turned to the people and said, 00:14:40.92\00:14:43.13 There you are; you see? 00:14:43.17\00:14:44.25 He does not uphold the law of Moses. 00:14:44.28\00:14:47.24 So they thought they had Jesus cornered. 00:14:47.27\00:14:50.30 Well, what did Jesus do about it? 00:14:50.33\00:14:52.20 He didn't say a thing! 00:14:52.23\00:14:53.64 He just knelt down and He began to write in the dust 00:14:53.67\00:14:59.66 on the temple floor. 00:14:59.69\00:15:01.20 And then He looked up and He said to them, He that is without 00:15:06.53\00:15:12.47 sin, let him cast the first stone. 00:15:12.50\00:15:15.66 I can just imagine the woman when Jesus said that, hearing 00:15:15.69\00:15:20.91 for herself a death sentence, and covering her face in anguish 00:15:20.94\00:15:24.53 and fear, dreading the first stone striking. 00:15:24.56\00:15:29.29 But Jesus knelt down again and He continued to write, 00:15:30.34\00:15:36.45 and one by one those pious hypocrites came and looked over 00:15:40.10\00:15:44.01 His shoulder. 00:15:44.04\00:15:45.01 They saw Him writing there sins which they had committed, 00:15:46.07\00:15:50.02 that they thought nobody else knew about. 00:15:50.05\00:15:52.13 One by one they decided it was time to leave. 00:15:52.16\00:15:55.43 So at last Jesus stood up and He said to the cowering woman, 00:15:55.46\00:16:02.18 Woman, where are your accusers? 00:16:02.21\00:16:06.17 Has no man condemned you? 00:16:06.20\00:16:08.81 And it was then, probably for the first time, that the woman 00:16:08.84\00:16:13.36 looked around and there was nobody there. 00:16:13.39\00:16:17.09 She said, No man condemns me, Lord. 00:16:17.12\00:16:21.25 Jesus said, Neither do I condemn you. 00:16:21.28\00:16:26.12 Go and sin no more. 00:16:26.15\00:16:29.55 I think that's probably where this poor repentant woman 00:16:29.58\00:16:34.18 flung herself at Jesus' feet and sobbed out her repentance, 00:16:34.21\00:16:38.01 and the forgiveness Jesus was offering her. 00:16:38.04\00:16:43.32 Have you done something wrong? 00:16:43.35\00:16:45.79 Have you done something you're sorry for? 00:16:47.02\00:16:48.77 Why don't you just come and fling yourself at Jesus' feet 00:16:50.91\00:16:53.52 and say, Lord I'm sorry? 00:16:53.55\00:16:55.01 You'll hear the very same words: Neither do I condemn you. 00:16:55.98\00:17:00.48 Go and sin no more. 00:17:00.51\00:17:02.86 That's the sort of God He is. 00:17:02.89\00:17:05.34 We travel right around the world in our next program to answer 00:17:06.09\00:17:09.26 the question, Where did the world come from? 00:17:09.29\00:17:11.37 Did it all take millions of years? 00:17:11.40\00:17:13.79 Are we related to monkeys? 00:17:13.82\00:17:15.34 How did it all happen? 00:17:15.37\00:17:16.82 David will be talking to some scientists in our next program 00:17:16.85\00:17:20.02 to get some answers to these questions. 00:17:20.05\00:17:22.22
