about the mere fact that Jesus

that based on Luke chapter 2

but also verse 52,

that Jesus learned how
to pray from His parents.

And so it's so important
for parents who are listening

to learn these vital principles
so that you can educate

your children in
learning how to pray.

We talked about the mere
fact that Jesus learned the

importance of Bible study,
prayer, worship, witnessing,

and the sharing of His faith.

demonstrated seven main aspects

And so we want to talk about
some of those important things.

Now look at this
beautiful picture of a family

This is something that we
want to stress and make clear

in your hearts and mine,
that we want mothers and fathers

to bring the children together
and learn the importance
00:03:20.63\00:03:24.58
of coming together
for family worship.

You see, family
worship is very important.
00:03:27.86\00:03:29.71
And family worship
should consist of a set time,
00:03:29.74\00:03:33.58
a special place in the home.
00:03:33.61\00:03:36.95
It could be at the dinner table,
it could be in your living room,

it could be in your dining
room, it could be in your den.

It could be any
designated place in the home.

It's important that
the family sing a song

in praise and honor to God.

And then perhaps the father
can read a special portion of

scripture from the
Bible or maybe read from a
00:03:56.35\00:03:59.11
devotional book.

Then after he's given or
read his devotional thought,

maybe make a few comments and
then take some prayer requests

from each member of the family.

Then after that has been done,
someone can lead out in prayer.

But always, it's very important
for the father to remember,

he is the priest
of his household.

He should assemble and
bring his family together.

Because you see, the members of
the family; their soul salvation
00:04:26.43\00:04:30.19
is at stake because of
the leadership of the father.

But in the event that the father
is not present in the home,
00:04:34.00\00:04:38.49
then the mother is to take
that responsibility and assemble
00:04:38.50\00:04:42.83
the children,
assemble the family together,
00:04:42.84\00:04:45.99
or those who ever are
visiting in the household,
00:04:46.02\00:04:48.52
together for worship.
00:04:48.55\00:04:50.25
This is so very important.

You see, family members
learn the importance of this
00:04:52.00\00:04:55.11
key element in raising a
family and establishing a home.

As I said, the father is the key
individual in the family members
00:04:58.89\00:05:04.77
learning about
God's plan of salvation.
00:05:04.80\00:05:07.43
Remember now, in
Genesis chapter 7 verse 1, how
00:05:07.46\00:05:12.68
after God had given Noah
instruction in how to build
00:05:12.71\00:05:16.92
the ark, the Bible says
in Genesis chapter 7 verse 1,
00:05:16.95\00:05:21.08
"And the Lord said unto Noah,
'Come though and all thy house
00:05:21.11\00:05:24.86
into the ark; for thee
have I seen righteous before Me
00:05:24.89\00:05:28.55
in this generation. '"
00:05:28.58\00:05:30.58
So Noah was a very important
figure in, not only him
00:05:30.61\00:05:36.30
being saved, but his wife,
his three sons and their wives.
00:05:36.33\00:05:40.86
And so God used him as a means
of getting his family ready.
00:05:40.89\00:05:45.72
And worship was a key element.
00:05:45.75\00:05:47.77
But also now, Noah
is not the only one that
00:05:47.80\00:05:49.98
we could to talk about.
00:05:49.99\00:05:51.01
We could also turn to Genesis
chapter 18 and look at verse 19
00:05:51.04\00:05:56.65
where we discover that God
is getting ready to destroy
00:05:56.68\00:06:00.46
Sodom and Gomorrah.
00:06:00.49\00:06:01.97
But before He does, He
makes sure that Abraham
00:06:02.00\00:06:04.89
is made aware of this.
00:06:04.92\00:06:06.59
And the Bible says in Genesis
18 beginning at verse 18,
00:06:06.62\00:06:10.27
"Seeing that Abraham
shall surely become a great
00:06:10.30\00:06:14.12
and mightily nation, and all
the nations of the earth shall
00:06:14.15\00:06:17.40
shall be blessed in him?"
00:06:17.43\00:06:18.47
And then verse 19, the Lord
says something very significant
00:06:18.50\00:06:23.08
about Abraham which shows
that Abraham had established
00:06:23.11\00:06:26.93
a habit of bringing his family
together for family worship
00:06:26.96\00:06:30.79
morning and evening.
00:06:30.82\00:06:31.89
The Bible says, "For I
know him that he will command
00:06:31.92\00:06:36.35
his children and his household
after him, and they shall
00:06:36.38\00:06:41.35
keep the way of the Lord,
to do justice and judgment;
00:06:41.38\00:06:45.14
that the Lord may
bring upon Abraham that which
00:06:45.15\00:06:48.66
He hath spoken of him. "
00:06:48.69\00:06:50.48
So Abraham did what God said.
00:06:50.51\00:06:52.79
But the point I want to say, it
says, "They shall keep the way
00:06:52.82\00:06:57.07
of the Lord. "
00:06:57.10\00:06:58.26
And you know, we've
been saying always, beloved,
00:06:58.29\00:07:00.47
that Jesus Christ is
our example in all things.
00:07:00.50\00:07:04.17
And the Bible does say
in John chapter 14 verse 6,
00:07:04.20\00:07:07.62
quoting Jesus now,
"Jesus saith unto him,
00:07:07.65\00:07:11.53
'I am the way, the
truth, and the life.
00:07:11.56\00:07:14.60
No man cometh unto
the Father but by Me. '"
00:07:14.63\00:07:17.79
And those three individuals
who came to visit Abraham
00:07:17.82\00:07:21.84
before the destruction
of Sodom and Gomorrah
00:07:21.87\00:07:24.74
were two angels and
the Lord, Jesus Christ.
00:07:24.77\00:07:27.95
I want you to know,
beloved, that it's so important
00:07:27.98\00:07:30.19
to have family worship.
00:07:30.22\00:07:32.53
But permit me now to
add a third dimension
00:07:32.56\00:07:35.33
to this topic
about family worship.
00:07:35.34\00:07:38.22
Now family prayer and
public prayer are very
00:07:38.23\00:07:43.55
vital and necessary.
00:07:43.58\00:07:45.40
But nothing is to ever
take the place of secret prayer.
00:07:45.43\00:07:50.34
And each member of the family
should learn how to approach
00:07:50.37\00:07:54.95
God alone, should
learn how to pray secretly.
00:07:54.98\00:07:59.46
Now there's a special little

It is impossible for
the soul to flourish while

prayer is neglected.

Family or public prayer
alone is not sufficient. "

Remember now, family
prayer and public prayer

is not sufficient.

"In solitude let the
soul be laid open to the

inspecting eye of God.

Secret prayer is to be heard
only by the prayer hearing God.

No curious ear is to receive
the burden of such petitions.

In secret prayer the
soul is free from surrounding
00:09:03.68\00:09:08.09
influences,
free from excitement.
00:09:08.12\00:09:10.63
Calmly yet fervently
will it reach out after God. "

And so, my viewing participant,
I want you to understand

the importance of
having secret prayer.

That's what we're emphasizing
today in establishing

your prayer life.

Now I want to look at
some key points in establishing
00:09:26.94\00:09:31.84
a secret prayer habit.
00:09:31.87\00:09:34.32
Yes beloved, the Bible gives
sound counsel in establishing
00:09:34.35\00:09:39.41
a regular habit
of secret prayer,
00:09:39.44\00:09:43.19
spending quality
time with God alone.
00:09:43.22\00:09:46.23
And I want you to write
down these text of scripture
00:09:46.26\00:09:48.91
as you hear me mention
them because I want you to
00:09:48.94\00:09:52.11
read it for yourself.
00:09:52.14\00:09:53.27
There's nothing like reading
the word of God for yourself
00:09:53.30\00:09:57.30
and finding out what
a "thus saith the Lord"
00:09:57.33\00:10:00.61
says for yourself.
00:10:00.64\00:10:01.83
Do like those earnest
Christians did in Thessalonica.
00:10:01.86\00:10:07.00
In Acts chapter 17
verse 11 the Bible says,
00:10:07.03\00:10:11.56
"These were more noble
than those in Thessalonica,
00:10:11.59\00:10:15.08
in that they received the word
with all readiness of mind and
00:10:15.11\00:10:19.41
searched the scriptures daily,
whether those things were so. "
00:10:19.44\00:10:22.61
So don't just
take my word for it.
00:10:22.64\00:10:24.45
I want you to read
the Bible for yourself.

And that's why, as you
heard me say, we like to depend

on the word of God to give us
our counsel and our instruction.

We want to do what Jesus
said in Matthew 4 verse 4

where Jesus Himself said,
"It is written, 'Man shall not
00:10:40.31\00:10:43.68
live by bread alone, but
by every word that proceedeth
00:10:43.71\00:10:46.82
out of the mouth of God. '"
00:10:46.85\00:10:48.47
So now, let's look at
these key points in establishing
00:10:48.50\00:10:52.25
a special secret prayer habit.
00:10:52.28\00:10:55.70
Alright.

I want to emphasize that now.

I want you to have a set time
every day for secret prayer.

I shared with you on a

text of scriptures about having
a set time for secret prayer.

We talked about
Mark chapter 1 verse 35.

We talked about Psalm
55 and verses 16 and 17.

But let me just add a few
others that I think will be very

helpful in helping us
to see the importance of

having a set time.

In the book of Ecclesiastes,
in Ecclesiastes chapter 3

beginning at verse 1, notice
what the word of God says.

"To every thing there is
a season and a time to every
00:11:44.44\00:11:48.70
purpose under the heaven.
00:11:48.73\00:11:49.91
A time to be born
and a time to die;
00:11:49.94\00:11:52.42
a time to plant and a time to
pluck up that which is planted;
00:11:52.45\00:11:55.61
a time to kill
and a time to heal;
00:11:55.64\00:11:57.92
a time to break down
and a time to build up;
00:11:57.95\00:12:00.56
a time to weep
and a time to laugh;
00:12:00.59\00:12:02.86
a time to mourn
and a time to dance;
00:12:02.89\00:12:05.26
a time to cast away stones and a
time to gather stones together;
00:12:05.29\00:12:08.64
a time to embrace and a
time to refrain from embracing;

a time to get
and a time to lose;

a time to cast away. "

Verse 7, "A time to
rend and a time to sew;

a time to keep
silence and a time to speak. "

And "a time to speak" can
also include a time to speak

to God in prayer.

So we need to have
a set time for prayer.

Many of us who are
viewing this telecast right now,

you have a time to
wake up in the morning;

a time to go to work; a time
to go and have some recreation;

a time to visit your doctor for
a special doctor's appointment;

a time to go shopping; a time to
attend a church of your choice;

a time to attend a
school for academic pursuits;
00:12:53.11\00:12:59.13
a time to take a
vacation; a time for visiting.

But beloved, we need to
have a set time for prayer.

Remember now, the Bible
gives us many illustrations

of Bible characters who
had set times for prayer.
00:13:09.84\00:13:13.95
For instance, in
Daniel chapter 6 we read about
00:13:13.98\00:13:20.19
the prophet Daniel; in
Daniel chapter 6 verse 10.
00:13:20.22\00:13:24.06
Daniel had established a habit
of having a set time for prayer
00:13:24.09\00:13:29.11
and everybody knew about it.
00:13:29.14\00:13:30.27
The Bible says,
Daniel 6 verse 10,
00:13:30.30\00:13:33.75
"Now when Daniel knew
that the writing was signed,
00:13:33.76\00:13:36.98
he went into his house;
and his windows being open
00:13:37.01\00:13:39.86
in his chamber toward Jerusalem,
he kneeled upon his knees
00:13:39.89\00:13:43.68
three times a day and prayed
and gave thanks before his God,
00:13:43.71\00:13:48.53
as he did aforetime. "
00:13:48.56\00:13:50.72
In other words, Daniel had a
habit of spending quality time
00:13:50.73\00:13:53.99
in prayer three times a day.
00:13:54.02\00:13:55.77
Based on the text that we read
in Psalm 55 verses 16 and 17.

Now let me add something else.

We need to have a personal
private place to be alone

with God in prayer.

Now we looked at the example
of Jesus that was given in

Mark 1 verse 35.
00:14:14.76\00:14:16.68
And then we want to look at
the counsel that Jesus gave to
00:14:16.71\00:14:20.79
His disciples and those
who were listening at that time
00:14:20.82\00:14:23.88
on how to have a secret place
to be alone with God in prayer.
00:14:23.91\00:14:28.02
The Bible says in
Matthew 6 verse 6,
00:14:28.05\00:14:30.66
He says, "But thou. "
00:14:30.69\00:14:32.35
That is you and I,
you who are listening.
00:14:32.38\00:14:34.67
But you who are
listening, "when thou prayest. "
00:14:34.82\00:14:38.48
"When" denotes time.
00:14:38.51\00:14:41.48
We ought to have a set time and
we ought to have a set place.
00:14:41.51\00:14:45.99
It says, "enter
into thy closet. "
00:14:46.02\00:14:48.74
When Jesus said,
"enter into thy closet,"
00:14:48.77\00:14:51.16
He was talking about the place.
00:14:51.19\00:14:52.86
So we know we
ought to have a set time.
00:14:52.89\00:14:54.86
And Mark 1:35 says He
got up early in the morning
00:14:54.89\00:14:58.67
before there was sunrise
and He went to a solitary place.
00:14:58.70\00:15:03.20
Solitary means to be alone, to
be in secret with God in prayer.

And the Bible says, "When
thou hast shut thy door. "
00:15:07.13\00:15:09.82
So beloved, wherever you
go to have this secret prayer,

to be alone with
God in your home.
00:15:14.47\00:15:16.20
It could be in the living room,
the dining room, the bathroom,
00:15:16.23\00:15:19.11
the bedroom, the patio,
the garage, the sitting room,
00:15:19.14\00:15:22.92
the library, the den,
the dining room, the kitchen.
00:15:22.95\00:15:25.45
Wherever you choose to do
it, my viewing participants.

But have a special place
in your home where you can be

alone with God and
follow this counsel.

Because Jesus said,
"When thou hast shut thy door,

pray to thy Father
which is in secret; and thy
00:15:38.22\00:15:42.37
Father which seeth in secret
shall reward thee openly. "

And then I want you to
understand the importance

of having an
established routine.

Let it be understood, just
like you get up in the morning

and you put your clothes
on and you brush your teeth,
00:15:56.17\00:15:59.21
or maybe you take a shower
or a bath and you put your
00:15:59.24\00:16:02.34
clothes on, you ought to
have an established routine
00:16:02.37\00:16:05.26
about going to your
secret place in prayer.
00:16:05.29\00:16:08.71

A routine which
will be a blessing to the

members of the family.

We need to have a set
routine in spending quality time

with God in prayer.

As I said, we
need to look at Jesus.

Because, once again, He
is our example in all things.

The Bible says now, in 1 Peter
chapter 2 looking at verse 21,

talking about the example of
Jesus because He is our example.

The Bible says in 1 Peter 2
verse 21, "For even hereunto
00:17:25.23\00:17:32.22
were ye called: because
Christ also suffered for us,

leaving us an example, that
ye should follow His steps. "

Notice now, we want to
follow the steps of Jesus

in learning how to pray; in
learning how to have a set time,

learning how to
have a set place,
00:17:47.60\00:17:49.76
an established place
where I can go to be alone,
00:17:49.77\00:17:52.76
but also having a routine.

A routine so much so that
other people will enquire,

"Will you also give me counsel
and insights on how to pray?"

Because the disciples saw the
results of Jesus' prayer life.

They saw that after He
prayed and came out of prayer

the things that
God did in His life.

The Bible shares something
in Hebrews chapter 5 verse 7.
