journey from Mesopotamia

his country and his relatives,

idolatry was spreading quickly

the worship of the one true God.

not a participant

of this form of false worship.

While his own father
mixed the true with the false,

Abraham refused to follow
in his father's traditions.

Scattered around the landscape
were altars that Abraham built

Abraham looked forward
to the time when the Messiah

should come to this
earth to save humanity.

He was remaining
faithful to his God.

journey with Abraham and Sarah

continuing on to Canaan.

Let us look at the book of
the beginnings, Genesis 12.

"Then Abram took Sarai

his wife and Lot
his brother's son,

and all their possessions
that they had gathered,

and the people who
they had acquired in Haran,

and they departed to
go to the land of Canaan.

So they came to
the land of Canaan.

Abram passed through the land

as far as the site of
Shechem, to the oak of Moreh.

Now the Canaanites
was then in the land."

Under the beautiful
oaks of the valley of Moreh

was one of the
first places that Abraham

and his household
set up their tents.

we get a
description of this land.

In Deuteronomy, the
Book of Deuteronomy 8:7-8,

"For the Lord your God is
bringing you into a good land,

a land of brooks of
water, of fountains and springs,

flowing forth in
valleys and hills,

a land of wheat and barley,

of vines and fig
trees and pomegranates,

a land of olive oil and honey."

Even though the land
was beautiful and fruitful,

this was not
what Abraham expected.

The Canaanites
were idolatrous people.

They had altars set up

in the groves to
worship false gods.

And there were
people that sacrificed

human beings on their altars.

This was not the
way of the one true God

that Abraham worshipped.

Why would the Creator
God have him leave his home,

his native land, his family
and come to a place like this.

It did not make
sense to Abraham.

But his faith
was in his Creator.

It was at this time of great
distress in the heart of Abraham

that the Lord
God appeared to him.

We read in the book of the
beginnings in Genesis 12:7.

"Then the Lord
appeared to Abram and said,

"To your descendants
I will give this land."

So he built an
altar there to the Lord,

What a merciful God we serve?

He is aware, aware of
our fears and our sorrows.

He knew that Abraham
needed comfort and assurance

and He revealed
Himself to Abraham

reminding him of the promise.

His faith in his
God was strengthened

and he knew that he
would not be left alone

in this sinful idolatrous land.

The Creator God
is good and great.

He knows what we
need and when we need it.

He never leaves us
to wonder aimlessly.

His eyes are
honest all the time.

God called Abraham and
He blessed and honored him.

Abraham's loyalty to God was
like a beacon to the inhabitants

of the nations he journeyed to.

He was not one to
isolate himself from anyone.

He had excellent relationships

with kings of the
surrounding nations.

And many treated
him with great respect.

His integrity, unselfishness,

In Mesopotamia,
in Canaan, in Egypt

inhabitants of Sodom,

the God of heaven was revealed

through the one He
chose to represent him.

Abraham's life was a
life of prayer and worship.

Wherever he set up his
tent, he also set up an altar.

He would offer the
morning and evening sacrifice.

And when he moved
on from place to place,

the altar remained behind him

as a witness of his
devotion to his God.

Many of the
Canaanites learned about

the one true God from Abraham.

And in their travels
around the land of Canaan,

they would come upon
one of the altars and knew

who was there before them.

They would repair the altar
and worship the God of Abraham.

God still wants each
of us to represent Him

as father Abraham did.

Abraham continued
to travel southward

when his faith
was once again tested.

A drought came upon the land.

Abraham did not understand

the events taking
place in his life.

He was obedient
to the God's leading.

Here he is in the
land that God promised him.

But the flocks and herds could
not find pasture and Abraham

and his people
were facing starvation.

The members of his household
were watching and waiting

to see what Abraham
would do in this situation.

After all he was
known as the friend of God.

And they had put their
trust in Abraham and his God.

Abraham would not allow doubts

and
discouragement to overtake him.

He remembered the promise
of God and held fast to it.

Again, in the
book of the beginnings

in Genesis 12:2 we
read, "I will bless you

and make your name great,
and you shall be a blessing."

With heartfelt
prayer to his Creator,

he wondered how he could
save his people and his flocks.

His faith in the promise of God

would not let him
return to his Chaldean land

where food was plentiful.

And he would not
turn away from Canaan,

the land that was promised
to him and his descendants.

Even though drought and
famine was ravaging the land.

So he traveled to Egypt
where he could find food

and water for his
people and his flocks.

This was a
temporary refuge for Abraham.

He and his people
would return to Canaan.

As we will see
Abraham needed to learn

some very important lessons.

And God was showing him
where he needed to improve.

He needed to learn
about total submission to God,

about patience and faith.

These things are
written for us today also.

We are to learn
the same examples,

the same lessons of
submission, patience and faith.

The life of
Abraham is an example

for all of us, his descendants.

Sometimes the
defects of our character

are hidden from
our own knowledge.

Our merciful God will help
us to form a right character

by bringing
eccentric trials and conflicts.

When you're facing
these times of trials,

when you're facing
these times of testing,

it is because God loves you.

And He wants to
mould you and use you

in His work for His purpose.

He sees in you
what no one else sees.

He sees your heart.

He gives you the
opportunity to work

on these defective character
traits and get yourself ready

to be used by Him
in a very powerful way.

He wants you to lean on Him.

He will help you through

the difficult
times of your life.

He is your only safeguard.

Abraham was not without
the same weaknesses and defects

of character that we face today.

When Abraham and his
people were close to Egypt,

he became afraid and took
matters into his own hands.

Let's read in the
book of the beginnings

"And it came to pass,

when he was close
to entering Egypt,

that he said to Sarai his wife,

"Indeed I know
that you are a woman

of beautiful countenance.

Therefore it will happen,
when the Egyptians see you,

say, 'This is his wife,

Abraham made a choice
that puts Sarah in danger.

She was taken
to Pharaoh's palace

be made his wife.

Pharaoh treated Abraham well,
00:12:44.47\00:12:48.49
believing that he
was Sarah's brother.

He gave him many
gifts, sheep, oxen,

male and female donkeys,
male and female servants.
00:12:56.09\00:13:01.71
But Abraham
committed a sin by lying about

his relationship
to his wife Sarah.

And as we see
in the same chapter

Genesis 12:17
God had to intervene.
00:13:11.38\00:13:16.09
Genesis 12:17, "But the Lord

plagued Pharaoh and his
house with great plagues
00:13:22.68\00:13:27.63
because of Sarai, Abram's wife."
00:13:27.66\00:13:33.14
God in His infinite
mercy protected Sarah
00:13:33.17\00:13:37.62
by sending judgments
upon pharaohs household.
00:13:37.65\00:13:43.20
God made sure that pharaoh
learned the truth about Sarah

before he
ignorantly committed a sin.

We're told again in the
same book Genesis 12:18-20
00:13:52.13\00:13:59.89
"And Pharaoh
called Abram and said,

"What is this
you have done to me?
00:14:03.16\00:14:05.57
Why did you not tell
me that she was your wife?

Why did you say,
'She is my sister'?

I might have
taken her as my wife.

Now therefore,
here is your wife,

So Pharaoh commanded
his men concerning him,

was greatly favored by God.

prohibited the Egyptians

So by allowing

lie to the Egyptians?

his faith in God?

In the Book of Ecclesiastes
we get a little glimpse

on earth who does what
is right and never sins."

At this moment Abraham's fear
became stronger than his faith.

sin against God by lying.

He still had much to learn
and the loving and forgiving God

When we fall, when we do sin

We can be encouraged by the fact

that we have a
God that understands.

toward those who fear Him.

As a father pities his children,

so the Lord pities

For He knows our frame, He

Our father in heaven is full
of compassion and forgiveness.
