As-Salaam-Alaikum, to our Muslim brother and sisters, 00:00:40.52\00:00:44.50 Shalom to our Hebrew cousins, 00:00:44.53\00:00:47.30 peace be upon you our Christian friends. 00:00:47.33\00:00:51.06 Welcome to "The Descendants of Abraham." 00:00:51.09\00:00:54.01 We're blessed with your presence here with us today. 00:00:54.04\00:00:58.30 Today we'll look at Abraham's journey from Mesopotamia 00:00:58.33\00:01:02.92 to the Promised Land, the land of Canaan. 00:01:02.95\00:01:06.37 In our previous program, we learned a little bit about 00:01:06.40\00:01:09.53 Abraham's call to leave his country and his relatives, 00:01:09.56\00:01:13.57 who were caught up in idolatry. 00:01:13.60\00:01:16.33 At that time in history, idolatry was spreading quickly 00:01:16.36\00:01:20.64 and was incorporated into the worship of the one true God. 00:01:20.67\00:01:25.23 But Abraham was not a participant 00:01:25.26\00:01:28.22 of this form of false worship. 00:01:28.25\00:01:31.16 While his own father mixed the true with the false, 00:01:31.19\00:01:36.11 Abraham refused to follow in his father's traditions. 00:01:36.14\00:01:41.09 Scattered around the landscape were altars that Abraham built 00:01:41.12\00:01:46.92 to worship the God, the one true God. 00:01:46.95\00:01:50.97 Abraham looked forward to the time when the Messiah 00:01:51.00\00:01:54.11 should come to this earth to save humanity. 00:01:54.14\00:01:58.62 He was remaining faithful to his God. 00:01:58.65\00:02:02.47 We'll pick up our journey with Abraham and Sarah 00:02:02.50\00:02:06.01 as they leave Haran, continuing on to Canaan. 00:02:06.04\00:02:10.16 Remember, Terah his father had died in Haran 00:02:10.19\00:02:14.41 and was buried there. 00:02:14.44\00:02:16.72 Let us look at the book of the beginnings, Genesis 12. 00:02:16.75\00:02:24.40 Genesis 12:5-6, "Then Abram took Sarai 00:02:24.43\00:02:31.14 his wife and Lot his brother's son, 00:02:31.17\00:02:34.39 and all their possessions that they had gathered, 00:02:34.42\00:02:37.38 and the people who they had acquired in Haran, 00:02:37.41\00:02:40.22 and they departed to go to the land of Canaan. 00:02:40.25\00:02:43.86 So they came to the land of Canaan. 00:02:43.89\00:02:46.94 Abram passed through the land 00:02:46.97\00:02:48.70 as far as the site of Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. 00:02:48.73\00:02:54.02 Now the Canaanites was then in the land." 00:02:54.05\00:02:59.11 Under the beautiful oaks of the valley of Moreh 00:02:59.14\00:03:02.79 was one of the first places that Abraham 00:03:02.82\00:03:06.17 and his household set up their tents. 00:03:06.20\00:03:09.56 And we read again in the Bible 00:03:09.59\00:03:13.41 we get a description of this land. 00:03:13.44\00:03:15.10 In Deuteronomy, the Book of Deuteronomy 8:7-8, 00:03:15.13\00:03:23.02 "For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, 00:03:23.05\00:03:27.79 a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, 00:03:27.82\00:03:32.62 flowing forth in valleys and hills, 00:03:32.65\00:03:35.83 a land of wheat and barley, 00:03:35.86\00:03:38.16 of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, 00:03:38.19\00:03:41.77 a land of olive oil and honey." 00:03:41.80\00:03:47.61 Even though the land was beautiful and fruitful, 00:03:47.64\00:03:51.07 this was not what Abraham expected. 00:03:51.10\00:03:54.69 The Canaanites were idolatrous people. 00:03:54.72\00:03:58.01 They had altars set up 00:03:58.04\00:03:59.79 in the groves to worship false gods. 00:03:59.82\00:04:03.33 And there were people that sacrificed 00:04:03.36\00:04:05.70 human beings on their altars. 00:04:05.73\00:04:09.38 This was not the way of the one true God 00:04:09.41\00:04:12.96 that Abraham worshipped. 00:04:12.99\00:04:15.56 Why would the Creator God have him leave his home, 00:04:15.59\00:04:20.51 his native land, his family and come to a place like this. 00:04:20.54\00:04:25.03 It did not make sense to Abraham. 00:04:25.06\00:04:27.67 But his faith was in his Creator. 00:04:27.70\00:04:31.61 It was at this time of great distress in the heart of Abraham 00:04:31.64\00:04:36.95 that the Lord God appeared to him. 00:04:36.98\00:04:41.28 We read in the book of the beginnings in Genesis 12:7. 00:04:41.31\00:04:49.17 "Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, 00:04:49.20\00:04:53.59 "To your descendants I will give this land." 00:04:53.62\00:04:57.57 So he built an altar there to the Lord, 00:04:57.60\00:05:00.10 who had appeared to him.'" 00:05:00.13\00:05:04.12 What a merciful God we serve? 00:05:04.15\00:05:07.48 He is aware, aware of our fears and our sorrows. 00:05:07.51\00:05:11.49 He knew that Abraham needed comfort and assurance 00:05:11.52\00:05:16.38 and He revealed Himself to Abraham 00:05:16.41\00:05:19.74 reminding him of the promise. 00:05:19.77\00:05:24.12 His faith in his God was strengthened 00:05:24.15\00:05:27.84 and he knew that he would not be left alone 00:05:27.87\00:05:30.94 in this sinful idolatrous land. 00:05:30.97\00:05:34.61 The Creator God is good and great. 00:05:34.64\00:05:39.51 He knows what we need and when we need it. 00:05:39.54\00:05:43.03 He never leaves us to wonder aimlessly. 00:05:43.06\00:05:46.35 His eyes are honest all the time. 00:05:46.38\00:05:51.97 God called Abraham and He blessed and honored him. 00:05:52.00\00:05:57.39 Abraham's loyalty to God was like a beacon to the inhabitants 00:05:57.42\00:06:02.14 of the nations he journeyed to. 00:06:02.17\00:06:05.42 He was not one to isolate himself from anyone. 00:06:05.45\00:06:09.91 He had excellent relationships 00:06:09.94\00:06:12.62 with kings of the surrounding nations. 00:06:12.65\00:06:15.52 And many treated him with great respect. 00:06:15.55\00:06:19.05 His integrity, unselfishness, his valor and his benevolence 00:06:19.08\00:06:25.32 represented the character of his God. 00:06:25.35\00:06:30.06 In Mesopotamia, in Canaan, in Egypt 00:06:30.09\00:06:35.28 and even to the inhabitants of Sodom, 00:06:35.31\00:06:38.90 the God of heaven was revealed 00:06:38.93\00:06:41.88 through the one He chose to represent him. 00:06:41.91\00:06:47.09 Abraham's life was a life of prayer and worship. 00:06:47.12\00:06:52.02 Wherever he set up his tent, he also set up an altar. 00:06:52.05\00:06:58.10 He would offer the morning and evening sacrifice. 00:06:58.13\00:07:01.56 And when he moved on from place to place, 00:07:01.59\00:07:04.67 the altar remained behind him 00:07:04.70\00:07:07.03 as a witness of his devotion to his God. 00:07:07.06\00:07:13.06 Many of the Canaanites learned about 00:07:13.09\00:07:15.64 the one true God from Abraham. 00:07:15.67\00:07:18.49 And in their travels around the land of Canaan, 00:07:18.52\00:07:21.75 they would come upon one of the altars and knew 00:07:21.78\00:07:25.02 who was there before them. 00:07:25.05\00:07:27.66 They would repair the altar and worship the God of Abraham. 00:07:27.69\00:07:33.94 God still wants each of us to represent Him 00:07:33.97\00:07:38.81 as father Abraham did. 00:07:38.84\00:07:42.09 Abraham continued to travel southward 00:07:42.12\00:07:44.95 when his faith was once again tested. 00:07:44.98\00:07:49.47 A drought came upon the land. 00:07:49.50\00:07:53.16 Abraham did not understand 00:07:53.19\00:07:55.03 the events taking place in his life. 00:07:55.06\00:07:58.06 He was obedient to the God's leading. 00:07:58.09\00:08:01.48 Here he is in the land that God promised him. 00:08:01.51\00:08:05.21 But the flocks and herds could not find pasture and Abraham 00:08:05.24\00:08:10.19 and his people were facing starvation. 00:08:10.22\00:08:14.23 The members of his household were watching and waiting 00:08:14.26\00:08:18.43 to see what Abraham would do in this situation. 00:08:18.46\00:08:22.57 After all he was known as the friend of God. 00:08:22.60\00:08:26.97 And they had put their trust in Abraham and his God. 00:08:27.00\00:08:32.94 Abraham would not allow doubts 00:08:32.97\00:08:35.01 and discouragement to overtake him. 00:08:35.04\00:08:37.63 He remembered the promise of God and held fast to it. 00:08:37.66\00:08:42.05 Again, in the book of the beginnings 00:08:42.08\00:08:45.01 in Genesis 12:2 we read, "I will bless you 00:08:45.04\00:08:51.90 and make your name great, and you shall be a blessing." 00:08:51.93\00:08:58.60 With heartfelt prayer to his Creator, 00:08:58.63\00:09:02.64 he wondered how he could save his people and his flocks. 00:09:02.67\00:09:07.63 His faith in the promise of God 00:09:07.66\00:09:10.57 would not let him return to his Chaldean land 00:09:10.60\00:09:14.45 where food was plentiful. 00:09:14.48\00:09:17.73 And he would not turn away from Canaan, 00:09:17.76\00:09:20.40 the land that was promised to him and his descendants. 00:09:20.43\00:09:25.73 Even though drought and famine was ravaging the land. 00:09:25.76\00:09:31.27 So he traveled to Egypt where he could find food 00:09:31.30\00:09:35.38 and water for his people and his flocks. 00:09:35.41\00:09:39.87 This was a temporary refuge for Abraham. 00:09:39.90\00:09:43.22 He and his people would return to Canaan. 00:09:43.25\00:09:47.61 As we will see Abraham needed to learn 00:09:47.64\00:09:51.30 some very important lessons. 00:09:51.33\00:09:53.69 And God was showing him where he needed to improve. 00:09:53.72\00:09:58.46 He needed to learn about total submission to God, 00:09:58.49\00:10:02.32 about patience and faith. 00:10:02.35\00:10:06.15 These things are written for us today also. 00:10:06.18\00:10:09.25 We are to learn the same examples, 00:10:09.28\00:10:12.63 the same lessons of submission, patience and faith. 00:10:12.66\00:10:18.15 The life of Abraham is an example 00:10:18.18\00:10:21.15 for all of us, his descendants. 00:10:21.18\00:10:26.57 Sometimes the defects of our character 00:10:26.61\00:10:29.34 are hidden from our own knowledge. 00:10:29.37\00:10:32.52 Our merciful God will help us to form a right character 00:10:32.55\00:10:37.24 by bringing eccentric trials and conflicts. 00:10:37.27\00:10:42.17 When you're facing these times of trials, 00:10:42.20\00:10:45.16 when you're facing these times of testing, 00:10:45.19\00:10:48.12 it is because God loves you. 00:10:48.15\00:10:51.40 And He wants to mould you and use you 00:10:51.43\00:10:55.42 in His work for His purpose. 00:10:55.45\00:10:59.04 He sees in you what no one else sees. 00:10:59.07\00:11:02.88 He sees your heart. 00:11:02.91\00:11:07.20 He gives you the opportunity to work 00:11:07.23\00:11:09.87 on these defective character traits and get yourself ready 00:11:09.90\00:11:14.52 to be used by Him in a very powerful way. 00:11:14.55\00:11:19.81 He wants you to lean on Him. 00:11:19.84\00:11:22.05 He will help you through 00:11:22.08\00:11:23.31 the difficult times of your life. 00:11:23.34\00:11:25.89 He is your only safeguard. 00:11:25.92\00:11:29.81 Abraham was not without the same weaknesses and defects 00:11:29.84\00:11:34.32 of character that we face today. 00:11:34.35\00:11:38.56 When Abraham and his people were close to Egypt, 00:11:38.59\00:11:42.15 he became afraid and took matters into his own hands. 00:11:42.18\00:11:47.69 Let's read in the book of the beginnings 00:11:47.72\00:11:51.66 again in Genesis 12:11-13, 00:11:51.69\00:11:59.53 "And it came to pass, 00:11:59.56\00:12:01.83 when he was close to entering Egypt, 00:12:01.86\00:12:04.04 that he said to Sarai his wife, 00:12:04.07\00:12:06.64 "Indeed I know that you are a woman 00:12:06.67\00:12:09.52 of beautiful countenance. 00:12:09.55\00:12:11.91 Therefore it will happen, when the Egyptians see you, 00:12:11.94\00:12:15.32 that they will say, 'This is his wife, 00:12:15.35\00:12:18.61 and they will kill me, but they will let you live. 00:12:18.64\00:12:22.56 Please say you are my sister, that it may be well 00:12:22.59\00:12:26.89 with me for your sake, and that I may live because of you." 00:12:26.92\00:12:33.27 Abraham made a choice that puts Sarah in danger. 00:12:33.30\00:12:38.08 She was taken to Pharaoh's palace 00:12:38.11\00:12:40.73 and was there to be made his wife. 00:12:40.76\00:12:44.44 Pharaoh treated Abraham well, 00:12:44.47\00:12:48.49 believing that he was Sarah's brother. 00:12:48.52\00:12:52.12 He gave him many gifts, sheep, oxen, 00:12:52.15\00:12:56.06 male and female donkeys, male and female servants. 00:12:56.09\00:13:01.71 But Abraham committed a sin by lying about 00:13:01.74\00:13:04.58 his relationship to his wife Sarah. 00:13:04.61\00:13:07.43 And as we see in the same chapter 00:13:07.46\00:13:11.35 Genesis 12:17 God had to intervene. 00:13:11.38\00:13:16.09 Genesis 12:17, "But the Lord 00:13:16.12\00:13:22.65 plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues 00:13:22.68\00:13:27.63 because of Sarai, Abram's wife." 00:13:27.66\00:13:33.14 God in His infinite mercy protected Sarah 00:13:33.17\00:13:37.62 by sending judgments upon pharaohs household. 00:13:37.65\00:13:43.20 God made sure that pharaoh learned the truth about Sarah 00:13:43.23\00:13:47.89 before he ignorantly committed a sin. 00:13:47.92\00:13:52.10 We're told again in the same book Genesis 12:18-20 00:13:52.13\00:13:59.89 "And Pharaoh called Abram and said, 00:13:59.92\00:14:03.13 "What is this you have done to me? 00:14:03.16\00:14:05.57 Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? 00:14:05.60\00:14:08.64 Why did you say, 'She is my sister'? 00:14:08.67\00:14:11.17 I might have taken her as my wife. 00:14:11.20\00:14:14.23 Now therefore, here is your wife, 00:14:14.26\00:14:16.42 take her and go your way." 00:14:16.45\00:14:18.79 So Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him, 00:14:18.82\00:14:21.89 Abraham, and they sent him away, 00:14:21.92\00:14:25.08 with his wife and all that he had." 00:14:25.11\00:14:30.08 Pharaoh knew that Abraham was greatly favored by God. 00:14:30.11\00:14:34.22 And he did not want to keep him in his kingdom. 00:14:34.25\00:14:38.64 At this time laws were prohibiting, 00:14:38.67\00:14:41.97 laws were made that prohibited the Egyptians 00:14:42.00\00:14:44.90 from forming any kind of relationship 00:14:44.93\00:14:48.11 with foreign shepherds. 00:14:48.14\00:14:50.43 There could be no eating or drinking with them. 00:14:50.46\00:14:53.20 So by allowing Abraham to depart from Egypt, 00:14:53.23\00:14:57.11 pharaoh was being kind and generous. 00:14:57.14\00:15:01.47 But why did Abraham lie to the Egyptians? 00:15:01.50\00:15:05.19 What happened to his faith in God? 00:15:05.22\00:15:08.96 Did he think that God would allow any harm 00:15:08.99\00:15:11.93 to come to him and his people? 00:15:11.96\00:15:14.49 Did God not prove His faithfulness to Abraham? 00:15:14.52\00:15:21.57 In the Book of Ecclesiastes we get a little glimpse 00:15:21.60\00:15:26.13 of why something like this could happen to any one of us. 00:15:26.16\00:15:30.52 Ecclesiastes 7:20, "There is not a righteous man 00:15:30.55\00:15:37.87 on earth who does what is right and never sins." 00:15:37.90\00:15:44.49 No one in this world is righteous. 00:15:44.52\00:15:47.66 We have all sinned. 00:15:47.69\00:15:49.80 We're all born in sin. 00:15:49.83\00:15:53.56 At this moment Abraham's fear became stronger than his faith. 00:15:53.59\00:16:00.79 He might have convinced himself that he was telling the truth. 00:16:00.82\00:16:04.29 After all Sarah was his half sister. 00:16:04.32\00:16:08.22 She was his father's daughter from another mother. 00:16:08.25\00:16:13.03 Even though what he said was partially true, 00:16:13.06\00:16:17.16 it was partially untrue. 00:16:17.19\00:16:20.44 It was deception no matter which way we want to look at it. 00:16:20.47\00:16:25.66 Our Creator God expects from us the strictest integrity 00:16:25.69\00:16:30.86 and no slight deviation 00:16:30.89\00:16:33.23 from that is acceptable in His sight. 00:16:33.26\00:16:39.81 We are expected to always be truthful and trust in our Lord 00:16:39.84\00:16:45.15 that He will make all things right. 00:16:45.18\00:16:48.35 Abraham committed the sin against God by lying. 00:16:48.38\00:16:52.56 He still had much to learn and the loving and forgiving God 00:16:52.59\00:16:57.48 who continues to teach him. 00:16:57.51\00:17:01.20 When we fall, when we do sin 00:17:01.23\00:17:04.90 and Abraham did so, so many times. 00:17:04.93\00:17:08.10 We can be encouraged by the fact 00:17:08.13\00:17:10.27 that we have a God that understands. 00:17:10.30\00:17:12.86 The psalmist writes in Psalm 103:11-14. 00:17:12.89\00:17:17.89 "For as the heavens are high above the earth. 00:17:23.55\00:17:26.38 So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him. 00:17:26.41\00:17:30.11 As far as the east is from the west, 00:17:30.14\00:17:33.24 So far has He removed our transgressions from us. 00:17:33.27\00:17:38.27 As a father pities his children, 00:17:38.30\00:17:41.07 so the Lord pities those who fear Him. 00:17:41.10\00:17:45.01 For He knows our frame, He remembers that we are dust." 00:17:45.04\00:17:52.40 Our father in heaven is full of compassion and forgiveness. 00:17:52.43\00:17:57.82 He is a God of love, not a God of condemnation. 00:17:57.85\00:18:02.21 Abraham knew this God. 00:18:02.24\00:18:04.97 He did not live in fear of this God. 00:18:05.00\00:18:10.27 Abraham who was called a friend of God was in training. 00:18:10.30\00:18:15.36 God was showing him character defects. 00:18:15.39\00:18:18.91 Abraham needed to get to a point in his life 00:18:18.94\00:18:21.82 where his faith in God was unquestionable. 00:18:21.85\00:18:26.18 This lesson is not for Abraham only, 00:18:26.21\00:18:28.91 this is a same lesson that our father, 00:18:28.94\00:18:31.72 the Creator God is trying to teach you and me. 00:18:31.75\00:18:36.17 When you chose to follow God, you must expect and allow Him 00:18:36.20\00:18:41.75 to be active in your life. 00:18:41.78\00:18:44.79 He will love you, He will forgive you, 00:18:44.82\00:18:47.95 He will protect you. 00:18:47.98\00:18:49.58 He will supply all your needs and even some of your wants. 00:18:49.61\00:18:55.69 But He will also expect perfect obedience from you 00:18:55.72\00:18:59.09 and He will give us all the help 00:18:59.12\00:19:00.88 we need to be loyal and faithful to Him. 00:19:00.91\00:19:05.43 Our God knows that we are born in sin. 00:19:05.46\00:19:08.92 He knows that we can do nothing good except 00:19:08.95\00:19:12.12 He works it in us. 00:19:12.15\00:19:14.44 He does not ever leave us alone in our struggles. 00:19:14.47\00:19:17.31 He just waits for us to yield to Him. 00:19:17.34\00:19:21.43 Abraham's life is written in the holy book 00:19:21.46\00:19:24.04 for us to study and learn about loving and forgiving Creator. 00:19:24.07\00:19:28.84 A God that asks us to cal Him Abba, father. 00:19:28.87\00:19:34.98 We'll continue to study Abraham's life 00:19:35.01\00:19:37.92 and we will see how God was teaching and training him. 00:19:37.95\00:19:41.53 So that he could dwell with holy beings in heaven. 00:19:41.56\00:19:45.22 Join us next time to learn more about 00:19:45.25\00:19:48.44 Abraham
