00:00:20.82\00:00:23.85 design or random chance. 00:00:23.89\00:00:27.22 They say it all began with a big bang. 00:00:27.26\00:00:31.33 But when we look at the amazing human body, 00:00:31.36\00:00:34.03 the answer is obvious. 00:00:34.10\00:00:36.16 The complexity of the design 00:00:36.20\00:00:37.87 exceeds anything man has ever made. 00:00:37.90\00:00:40.90 The body, it only has been designed 00:00:40.94\00:00:43.74 by the master designer we read about in the Bible. 00:00:43.77\00:00:47.68 Join us as we explore 00:00:47.71\00:00:49.51 the miraculous development for human baby. 00:00:49.54\00:00:52.15 Divine Design. 00:01:08.66\00:01:10.53 Hello, I'm Patti Barnes, 00:01:26.41\00:01:28.05 Director of the Midwifery Program 00:01:28.08\00:01:29.62 at Hartland College. 00:01:29.65\00:01:31.49 Today, we wanna look at some benefits 00:01:31.52\00:01:33.89 and the blessings of breast feeding. 00:01:33.92\00:01:36.46 As we observe the animal kingdom, 00:01:36.49\00:01:38.59 we find that all mammals nurse their young. 00:01:38.63\00:01:41.43 This was part of God's plan 00:01:41.46\00:01:43.40 to meet nutritional needs of the infant. 00:01:43.47\00:01:46.10 But man is no mere animal, 00:01:46.13\00:01:47.97 we are made in the likeness of God and consequently, 00:01:48.00\00:01:51.54 the Lord designed a special formula for mankind. 00:01:51.57\00:01:55.04 We find in the book Genesis, 00:01:55.08\00:01:57.15 that mothers breast fed their babies. 00:01:57.18\00:01:59.58 For example, we find in Genesis 21:8, 00:01:59.61\00:02:03.35 Isaac was nursed by his mother. 00:02:03.39\00:02:06.99 "And the child grew, and was weaned, 00:02:07.02\00:02:09.76 and Abraham made a great feast the same day 00:02:09.79\00:02:12.59 that Isaac was weaned." 00:02:12.63\00:02:14.30 And we all remember the story of Hannah. 00:02:14.36\00:02:17.00 who dedicated her first born, Samuel, to the Lord. 00:02:17.07\00:02:20.74 And I Samuel 1:22-23, we are told... 00:02:20.77\00:02:26.71 "But Hannah went not up, for she said unto her husband, 00:02:26.78\00:02:30.48 I will not go up until the child be weaned, 00:02:30.55\00:02:33.25 and then I will bring him, 00:02:33.28\00:02:34.68 that he may appear before the Lord, 00:02:34.72\00:02:36.72 and there abide for ever. 00:02:36.79\00:02:38.95 And Elkanah her husband said unto her, 00:02:38.99\00:02:41.46 Do what seemeth thee good, 00:02:41.49\00:02:43.39 tarry until thou have weaned him, 00:02:43.43\00:02:45.86 only the Lord establish his word. 00:02:45.89\00:02:48.23 So the woman abode, 00:02:48.26\00:02:49.60 and gave her son suck until she weaned him." 00:02:49.63\00:02:52.70 According to most commentators and early authorities, 00:02:52.73\00:02:56.17 babies were now weaned for two or three years. 00:02:56.20\00:02:58.94 However, when we consider 00:02:58.97\00:03:00.51 that man's life span was much longer 00:03:00.54\00:03:02.88 during the time of the patriots, 00:03:02.91\00:03:05.38 we have to think proportionally. 00:03:05.41\00:03:08.38 Generally, children are weaned much sooner than that, today. 00:03:08.42\00:03:12.19 The important question we want to consider, 00:03:12.22\00:03:14.92 is why mother should breast feed their babies? 00:03:14.96\00:03:18.09 Is there something unique about human breast milk, 00:03:18.13\00:03:20.70 in comparison to other animals, 00:03:20.73\00:03:22.70 especially that of cows and goats? 00:03:22.73\00:03:25.77 And what about infant formulas? 00:03:25.80\00:03:27.94 Just what is the best plan 00:03:27.97\00:03:29.80 to adopt for our precious little infants. 00:03:29.84\00:03:32.91 First, let's look at the nutritional quality 00:03:32.94\00:03:35.28 of human milk as compared to other animals. 00:03:35.31\00:03:38.91 One of the first considerations most people have, 00:03:38.95\00:03:41.65 is a protein count of milk. 00:03:41.68\00:03:44.59 After all, a growing child needs protein, right? 00:03:44.62\00:03:48.42 This chart adapted 00:03:48.46\00:03:49.79 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture 00:03:49.82\00:03:51.63 shows the amount of protein found in one cup of milk 00:03:51.66\00:03:55.40 from various animals. 00:03:55.43\00:03:57.23 Notice that cow's milk and goat's milk 00:03:57.30\00:03:59.90 have over three times, the amount of protein. 00:03:59.93\00:04:03.04 The protein count is lead to weight gain 00:04:03.07\00:04:06.14 required for each animal. 00:04:06.17\00:04:08.88 For example, a cow will double in its birth weight 00:04:08.91\00:04:11.45 in about 40 days compared to a human infant, 00:04:11.48\00:04:14.72 doubling its weight in 180 days. 00:04:14.75\00:04:17.85 Remember, God designed the milk 00:04:17.89\00:04:19.45 specifically for the growing needs of the animals. 00:04:19.49\00:04:23.09 In fact, it's not just the amount of total protein 00:04:23.12\00:04:26.73 but the types of protein as well, 00:04:26.76\00:04:29.06 that makes the big difference. 00:04:29.10\00:04:31.20 'Leucine' is an amino acid 00:04:31.23\00:04:33.27 and it's essential in the building of muscle. 00:04:33.30\00:04:36.54 Animals that double their birth weight rapidly, 00:04:36.57\00:04:39.81 have higher protein and leucine level. 00:04:39.84\00:04:43.68 The cow's is three times higher than humans. 00:04:43.71\00:04:47.05 A cat doubles its weight in about 10 days 00:04:47.08\00:04:50.22 and it's almost 10 times higher in protein and leucine. 00:04:50.25\00:04:54.29 A rat doubles its weight in the first four days 00:04:54.32\00:04:58.06 and has a protein, leucine level, 00:04:58.09\00:05:00.60 almost 12 times greater than the humans. 00:05:00.63\00:05:04.40 There are basically, two types of milk protein, 00:05:04.43\00:05:07.67 Casein and Whey. 00:05:07.70\00:05:10.07 The amount of casein protein in comparison to whey protein 00:05:10.11\00:05:13.34 varies from one animal to another. 00:05:13.38\00:05:16.01 In human milk, 00:05:16.04\00:05:17.38 the ratio is about 40 to 60 casein to whey. 00:05:17.41\00:05:21.38 Cow's milk has about an 80 to 20 ratio. 00:05:21.42\00:05:24.52 In other words, 00:05:24.55\00:05:25.89 not only does cow's milk have a greater amount of protein 00:05:25.92\00:05:29.42 but the casein is extremely more, 00:05:29.46\00:05:32.36 in comparison to breast milk. 00:05:32.39\00:05:34.73 Not only is casein difficult for humans to digest 00:05:34.73\00:05:38.17 but studies have shown a link between casein 00:05:38.20\00:05:41.24 and a variety of diseases and allergies. 00:05:41.27\00:05:44.21 Manufacturers of infant formulas, 00:05:44.24\00:05:46.51 based on cow's milk have lowered the casein 00:05:46.54\00:05:49.04 to be more like that of humans. 00:05:49.08\00:05:51.78 But there seems to still be a link 00:05:51.81\00:05:54.45 between these formulas and overweight children. 00:05:54.52\00:05:58.39 Fat should also be taken into consideration. 00:05:58.42\00:06:01.59 The total fat content of cow's milk 00:06:01.62\00:06:04.26 and human milk is similar. 00:06:04.29\00:06:06.86 But the types of fat are significantly different. 00:06:06.90\00:06:10.67 For example, cow's milk contains 00:06:10.70\00:06:13.03 much more saturated fats 00:06:13.07\00:06:14.87 and considerably less unsaturated fats 00:06:14.90\00:06:18.31 than breast milk. 00:06:18.34\00:06:20.91 In addition, the fatty acids 00:06:20.98\00:06:23.21 that are essential to brain growth 00:06:23.24\00:06:24.91 are almost non-existent in cow's milk. 00:06:24.95\00:06:28.12 The cow is designed to grow in bulk and size quickly. 00:06:28.15\00:06:32.35 But the brain, is the fastest growing part of a human infant. 00:06:32.39\00:06:37.03 There are certain Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids 00:06:37.06\00:06:41.40 that are essential for brain development. 00:06:41.43\00:06:43.83 And they are not found in cow's milk. 00:06:43.87\00:06:47.64 Dr Emilie Van Wyk, who has studied extensively 00:06:47.70\00:06:51.71 in the areas of child development and education, 00:06:51.74\00:06:54.54 states that breast fed infants develop a higher IQ 00:06:54.58\00:06:59.25 and have an improved brain and nervous system. 00:06:59.28\00:07:03.05 Researchers found in studies, where children and youth, 00:07:03.08\00:07:06.52 ages 8, 12 and 18, 00:07:06.55\00:07:09.29 that they had an IQ approximately, 00:07:09.32\00:07:12.19 10-12 points higher 00:07:12.23\00:07:14.66 than children who are fed on formula. 00:07:14.73\00:07:17.93 They found that there are specific proteins in human milk 00:07:17.97\00:07:22.30 that promote brain development. 00:07:22.34\00:07:25.21 Another nutrient that gets a lot of attention is calcium. 00:07:25.24\00:07:29.18 We were all taught in formative years 00:07:29.21\00:07:31.48 that we needed lots of calcium for bone growth. 00:07:31.51\00:07:34.82 Cow's milk is actually about four times higher in calcium 00:07:34.85\00:07:39.35 than human milk. 00:07:39.39\00:07:40.86 However, the story doesn't end there. 00:07:40.92\00:07:43.06 Remember, a cow is designed to grow quickly 00:07:43.09\00:07:45.73 and needs an extra dose of calcium. 00:07:45.76\00:07:48.26 Human infants don't need all that extra calcium. 00:07:48.30\00:07:52.13 Further more, the calcium in cow's milk 00:07:52.17\00:07:54.47 is not as easily assimilated as breast milk. 00:07:54.50\00:07:58.34 It is far better to get the calcium from the milk 00:07:58.37\00:08:01.64 that comes from the mother of the offspring, 00:08:01.68\00:08:04.45 just as God has designed. 00:08:04.51\00:08:06.95 We find this to be true with many other nutrients, 00:08:06.98\00:08:10.52 iron is lacking in cow's milk 00:08:10.55\00:08:13.02 but human milk, suited for human babies. 00:08:13.05\00:08:16.89 Vitamin C is also found in greater quantities 00:08:16.93\00:08:20.66 in human milk. 00:08:20.70\00:08:22.00 Sodium on the other hand, 00:08:22.03\00:08:23.77 is in much higher quantities in cow and goat milk. 00:08:23.80\00:08:27.97 Let's compare the sodium content 00:08:28.00\00:08:29.87 of human breast milk with cow's milk, goat's milk 00:08:29.90\00:08:33.78 and infant formulas from cow and goat milk. 00:08:33.81\00:08:38.08 The following measurements are based on a 36 ounce of milk. 00:08:38.11\00:08:42.72 Higher sodium may also be a contributing factor 00:08:42.75\00:08:45.65 in overweight and obese children. 00:08:45.69\00:08:48.42 By the way, according to Dr Cohen, 00:08:48.46\00:08:50.56 a researcher in the field of lactation, 00:08:50.59\00:08:53.46 mothers who breast feed for six months or more 00:08:53.50\00:08:57.20 are less likely to become overweight or obese. 00:08:57.27\00:09:01.34 So the mother can benefit as well as the baby. 00:09:01.40\00:09:05.41 When we consider the excess protein, 00:09:05.44\00:09:07.71 calcium and sodium in cow's milk, 00:09:07.74\00:09:10.38 it is understandable 00:09:10.41\00:09:11.75 that it can tax the infant's kidneys. 00:09:11.78\00:09:14.28 Babies fed human breast milk, 00:09:14.35\00:09:16.42 show about one-third of the amount of renal solute 00:09:16.45\00:09:19.99 that must be excreted from the kidneys, 00:09:20.02\00:09:22.82 compared to those on cow's milk 00:09:22.86\00:09:25.66 and about half that are formula fed babies. 00:09:25.69\00:09:29.10 Bear in mind, that all these amount and percentages 00:09:29.13\00:09:31.97 we have mentioned are going to vary. 00:09:32.00\00:09:34.74 No two cows are exactly alike 00:09:34.77\00:09:36.97 and certainly, no two mothers 00:09:37.01\00:09:38.34 are going to produce exactly the same quality of milk. 00:09:38.37\00:09:42.54 It is important that a nursing mother 00:09:42.58\00:09:45.18 has a well balance nutritious diet, 00:09:45.21\00:09:48.15 so that she can provide a very highest quality of milk 00:09:48.22\00:09:52.29 for her new born. 00:09:52.32\00:09:54.26 Not only is the diet important but the life style as well. 00:09:54.29\00:09:59.49 Consider the statement from the Book Councils on Health, 00:09:59.53\00:10:02.70 page 79 and 80. 00:10:02.73\00:10:05.73 "The period in which the infant receives its nourishment 00:10:05.77\00:10:08.47 from its mother is critical. 00:10:08.50\00:10:10.67 Many a mother, while nursing her infant, 00:10:10.71\00:10:13.48 has been permitted to overwork, 00:10:13.51\00:10:15.71 heating her blood over the cookstove 00:10:15.74\00:10:18.45 and the nursling has been seriously affected, 00:10:18.48\00:10:21.65 not only with fevered nourishment 00:10:21.68\00:10:23.28 from the mother's breast, but its blood has been poisoned 00:10:23.32\00:10:27.32 by the unhealthy diet of the mother, 00:10:27.36\00:10:29.72 which has fevered her whole system, 00:10:29.76\00:10:32.39 thereby affecting the food of the infant. 00:10:32.43\00:10:36.60 The infant is also affected 00:10:36.63\00:10:38.20 by the condition of the mother's mind. 00:10:38.23\00:10:40.57 If she is unhappy, easily agitated, irritable, 00:10:40.60\00:10:44.44 giving vent to outbursts of passion, 00:10:44.47\00:10:46.91 the nourishment the infant receives from its mother 00:10:46.94\00:10:49.34 will be inflamed, often producing colic, spasms, 00:10:49.38\00:10:53.82 and, in some instances, causing convulsions, or fits. 00:10:53.85\00:10:58.25 The character also of the child is more or less affected 00:10:58.29\00:11:01.26 by the nature of the nourishment 00:11:01.29\00:11:02.89 received from the mother. 00:11:02.92\00:11:04.89 How important, then, that the mother, 00:11:04.93\00:11:07.13 while nursing her infant, 00:11:07.20\00:11:08.96 should preserve a happy state of mind, 00:11:09.00\00:11:11.60 having perfect control of her own spirit. 00:11:11.63\00:11:15.14 By thus doing, the food of the child is not injured, 00:11:15.17\00:11:18.67 and the calm, self-possessed course the mother pursues 00:11:18.71\00:11:21.68 in the treatment of her child 00:11:21.71\00:11:23.48 has much to do in molding the mind of the infant. 00:11:23.51\00:11:26.72 If it is nervous and easily agitated, 00:11:26.75\00:11:29.58 the mother's careful, unhurried manner 00:11:29.62\00:11:32.25 will have a soothing and correcting influence, 00:11:32.29\00:11:35.16 and the health of the infant will be much improved." 00:11:35.19\00:11:38.79 Let's look briefly at how God designed 00:11:38.83\00:11:41.73 the mechanics of breast feeding. 00:11:41.76\00:11:44.17 Remember that hormone called 'Oxytocin' 00:11:44.20\00:11:46.84 that helps stimulate contractions. 00:11:46.87\00:11:49.50 Well, that hormone also has a role to play 00:11:49.54\00:11:52.14 in combination with 'Prolactin,' 00:11:52.17\00:11:55.14 in the production of milk. 00:11:55.18\00:11:57.08 As a baby begins to suck, 00:11:57.11\00:11:59.11 the nerves convey the signal to the brain 00:11:59.15\00:12:01.95 and the pituitary gland releases these two hormone, 00:12:01.98\00:12:05.15 prolactin and oxytocin. 00:12:05.19\00:12:07.69 They in turn, will stimulate milk production. 00:12:07.72\00:12:11.89 The more the baby nurses, 00:12:11.93\00:12:13.66 the more production will take place. 00:12:13.70\00:12:16.00 The oxytocin will also stimulate contractions 00:12:16.03\00:12:19.10 to help expel the placenta. 00:12:19.13\00:12:21.54 When the baby first nurses, 00:12:21.57\00:12:23.61 the initial milk is what is called 'Colostrum,' 00:12:23.64\00:12:27.21 this is a rich creamy substance full of antibodies. 00:12:27.24\00:12:31.15 This will help strengthen the baby's immune system. 00:12:31.18\00:12:34.32 It is also easily digested, 00:12:34.35\00:12:36.85 this will continue for the first few days, 00:12:36.89\00:12:39.22 after which the matured milk will come in, 00:12:39.25\00:12:41.66 which is higher in fat and protein. 00:12:41.69\00:12:44.33 It also carries necessary antibodies 00:12:44.36\00:12:47.03 but not as much as the colostrum. 00:12:47.03\00:12:49.20 The skin to skin contact will help keep the baby warm 00:12:49.23\00:12:52.17 and promote a bonding between the baby and the mother. 00:12:52.20\00:12:55.04 There is hardly any love 00:12:55.07\00:12:56.71 that compares with the mother's love 00:12:56.74\00:12:58.51 while nursing her new born. 00:12:58.54\00:13:00.38 But we find that God's love is even greater than this. 00:13:00.41\00:13:04.75 In Isaiah 49:15, we read...
