00:00:21.08\00:00:23.92 design or random chance, 00:00:23.95\00:00:27.36 they say it all began with a big bang, 00:00:27.39\00:00:31.43 but when we look at the amazing human body, 00:00:31.46\00:00:34.13 the answer is obvious. 00:00:34.16\00:00:36.26 The complexity of the design 00:00:36.30\00:00:37.97 exceeds anything man has ever made. 00:00:38.00\00:00:41.10 The body, it only have been designed 00:00:41.14\00:00:43.94 by the master designer we read about in the Bible. 00:00:43.97\00:00:49.34 Divine Design. 00:00:49.38\00:00:51.08 Hello, I'm Patti Barnes, 00:01:03.73\00:01:05.86 Director of the Midwifery program at Hartland College. 00:01:05.89\00:01:09.23 If you recall from our last session 00:01:09.26\00:01:11.73 the baby was at 16 weeks. 00:01:11.77\00:01:14.24 Although the eyes are still closed, 00:01:14.27\00:01:16.87 there is a sensitivity to bright lights 00:01:16.91\00:01:19.97 in the environment. 00:01:20.01\00:01:21.68 This reveals the importance 00:01:21.71\00:01:23.58 of establishing a regular schedule. 00:01:23.61\00:01:26.28 So the baby begins to distinguish 00:01:26.31\00:01:29.05 between night and day. 00:01:29.08\00:01:31.69 If you are a person that stays up all night, 00:01:31.72\00:01:35.19 you can expect your baby to do the same. 00:01:35.22\00:01:38.29 This is why it's so very important 00:01:38.33\00:01:41.00 to keep regular hours for bed time, 00:01:41.03\00:01:43.37 in order to train your baby properly while in utero. 00:01:43.40\00:01:47.67 It will make things a lot easier 00:01:47.70\00:01:50.01 when he or she is born. 00:01:50.04\00:01:52.37 At around 17 to 18 weeks, 00:01:52.41\00:01:54.64 the mother begins to feel movement, 00:01:54.68\00:01:56.78 even though the baby has been moving for quite sometime now. 00:01:56.81\00:02:00.55 An ultrasound is capable at this time 00:02:00.58\00:02:03.42 of determining the gender. 00:02:03.45\00:02:05.85 At 18 weeks the baby has grown to nearly 6 inches 00:02:05.89\00:02:11.39 and weighs almost a half a pound. 00:02:11.43\00:02:15.80 Now everyone knows what happens to your skin 00:02:15.83\00:02:18.13 when you stay for a long period of time in the water, 00:02:18.17\00:02:22.20 it wrinkles up like a prune, doesn't it? 00:02:22.24\00:02:25.34 God has taken care of this problem too. 00:02:25.37\00:02:28.34 It is around the 18th week that He provides a baby 00:02:28.38\00:02:33.08 with a creamy waxy like substance 00:02:33.11\00:02:35.72 called Vernix Caseosa. 00:02:35.75\00:02:39.25 This is from the Latin words Vernix meaning varnish, 00:02:39.29\00:02:43.79 and Caseosa meaning cheese. 00:02:43.83\00:02:47.06 This covers the baby skin and protects it 00:02:47.10\00:02:50.20 during the remaining time in the womb, 00:02:50.23\00:02:53.27 but this is no mere skin cream, 00:02:53.30\00:02:56.00 it is also made up of antibiotics 00:02:56.04\00:02:58.67 that protect the baby from skin infections. 00:02:58.71\00:03:02.28 Enzymes, proteins, and other valuable properties 00:03:02.31\00:03:05.38 are also found in Vernix. 00:03:05.41\00:03:08.22 It was reported 00:03:08.25\00:03:09.58 in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology 00:03:09.62\00:03:12.69 that a number of immunity factors 00:03:12.72\00:03:15.22 are present in Vernix. 00:03:15.26\00:03:17.99 This is why so many healthcare providers 00:03:18.03\00:03:21.06 choose not to wash it off immediately after birth, 00:03:21.10\00:03:24.23 but rub it into the baby skin. 00:03:24.27\00:03:27.40 Amazingly Vernix Caseosa is unique to humans, 00:03:27.44\00:03:32.04 not being found in any other mammals 00:03:32.07\00:03:35.01 including primates. 00:03:35.04\00:03:38.11 Jesus the creator of all life 00:03:38.15\00:03:40.75 made special provision for the human baby. 00:03:40.78\00:03:43.95 Indeed we are fearfully and wonderfully made. 00:03:43.99\00:03:47.82 At 20 weeks we have reached 00:03:47.86\00:03:50.86 the half way point of pregnancy, 00:03:50.89\00:03:53.40 which is generally considered to last 40 weeks. 00:03:53.43\00:03:57.73 The uterus should measure about 20 centimeters, 00:03:57.77\00:04:01.44 and from this time on the uterus should be growing 00:04:01.47\00:04:05.27 1 centimeter per week. 00:04:05.31\00:04:08.31 At 20 weeks the baby is about 7 to 8 inches long 00:04:08.34\00:04:12.25 and weighs anywhere from 9 to 10 ounces. 00:04:12.28\00:04:15.98 Toenails and fingernails are growing, 00:04:16.02\00:04:18.62 and the baby skin is getting thicker. 00:04:18.65\00:04:21.39 The baby is becoming a little more active, 00:04:21.42\00:04:23.93 and you might began to feel him hiccupping, 00:04:23.96\00:04:26.90 a sought of rhythmic movement or spasms. 00:04:26.93\00:04:30.80 This is normal 00:04:30.83\00:04:32.17 and it's caused by amniotic fluid 00:04:32.20\00:04:34.44 entering and exiting the baby's lungs. 00:04:34.47\00:04:38.34 This actually helps develop 00:04:38.37\00:04:39.94 the baby's respiratory functions. 00:04:39.97\00:04:43.01 At this point the baby's brain is in high gear 00:04:43.04\00:04:46.51 as it further develops a senses of hearing, 00:04:46.55\00:04:49.42 sight, touch, smelling, and taste. 00:04:49.45\00:04:54.06 That sounds the baby hear now 00:04:54.09\00:04:57.33 will be ones he will identify with more readily after birth. 00:04:57.36\00:05:02.03 He will also begin hearing and recognizing your voice. 00:05:02.06\00:05:06.03 Pathways in the brain are being formed 00:05:06.07\00:05:09.24 that will affect the baby's attitude 00:05:09.27\00:05:11.57 and disposition and moods. 00:05:11.61\00:05:14.44 In Adventist Home, page 258 we read, 00:05:14.48\00:05:18.45 "Every women about to become a mother, 00:05:18.48\00:05:21.12 whatever may be her surroundings, 00:05:21.15\00:05:23.22 should encourage constantly a happy, 00:05:23.25\00:05:26.05 cheerful, contented disposition, 00:05:26.09\00:05:28.99 knowing that for all her efforts in this direction 00:05:29.02\00:05:32.19 she will be repaid tenfold in the physical, 00:05:32.23\00:05:35.36 as well as the moral character of her offspring." 00:05:35.40\00:05:39.13 Kathleen Thomas, a cognitive development specialist 00:05:39.17\00:05:43.71 at the University of Minnesota has reported 00:05:43.74\00:05:47.61 that the lab experiments have clearly shown 00:05:47.64\00:05:50.71 that babies can remember 00:05:50.75\00:05:52.15 and recognize their mother's voice 00:05:52.18\00:05:54.62 almost immediately after birth. 00:05:54.65\00:05:57.25 They will also prefer a book 00:05:57.29\00:06:00.16 that they had read to them repeatedly in the womb. 00:06:00.19\00:06:04.49 In the book Mind Character and Personality, volume 1, 00:06:04.53\00:06:08.80 page 140 we read, 00:06:08.83\00:06:10.93 "What an enormous weight of responsibility 00:06:10.97\00:06:13.87 rests upon parents 00:06:13.90\00:06:15.57 when we consider that the course pursued by them 00:06:15.60\00:06:17.94 before the birth of their children has very much to do 00:06:17.97\00:06:21.61 with the development of their character after their birth." 00:06:21.64\00:06:25.01 At 22 to 24 weeks of pregnancy, 00:06:25.05\00:06:28.32 the baby will have grown to about 10 to 11 inches long 00:06:28.35\00:06:32.22 and now weighs from 1 to 1 1/2 pounds, 00:06:32.25\00:06:35.89 the eyebrows and eyelashes are now fully formed, 00:06:35.92\00:06:39.39 and the eyelids can be as clearly seen. 00:06:39.43\00:06:43.03 At this point the baby may begin sucking his thumb. 00:06:43.06\00:06:47.64 Thumb sucking 00:06:47.67\00:06:49.00 helps improve the baby's hand muscle, coordination 00:06:49.04\00:06:52.74 and prepares the baby for nursing after birth. 00:06:52.77\00:06:56.58 Amazingly at 24 weeks 00:06:56.61\00:06:59.58 the baby has a 50 percent chance of survival 00:06:59.61\00:07:02.85 outside the womb. 00:07:02.88\00:07:04.62 Let us move forward to about 26 to 28 weeks. 00:07:04.65\00:07:08.72 The average size is now 14 to 15 inches 00:07:08.76\00:07:12.83 and the weight is about 2 to 2 and a quarter pounds. 00:07:12.86\00:07:16.60 The eyes are open now. 00:07:16.63\00:07:18.73 And by the way did you know 00:07:18.77\00:07:20.57 that all Caucasian babies are born with blue eyes. 00:07:20.60\00:07:24.44 They won't get their final color 00:07:24.47\00:07:26.24 until months after they're born. 00:07:26.27\00:07:28.74 This is because they are not born 00:07:28.78\00:07:31.41 with enough a pigment called melanin. 00:07:31.45\00:07:35.08 Unlike African-American, Hispanic, 00:07:35.12\00:07:37.69 and Asian babies who have more melanin at birth. 00:07:37.72\00:07:41.86 The viability or survival rate outside the womb 00:07:41.89\00:07:45.36 now increases to about 70 to 90 percent, 00:07:45.39\00:07:49.53 although they will need probably a lot of support 00:07:49.56\00:07:52.80 in the neonatal intensive care unit. 00:07:52.83\00:07:55.70 One of the reason for this increase survival rate 00:07:55.74\00:07:59.21 is because of substance called surfactant 00:07:59.24\00:08:02.61 is beginning to develop. 00:08:02.64\00:08:04.85 This is another wonder of God's design. 00:08:04.88\00:08:08.72 Its purpose is to keep the lung tissue 00:08:08.75\00:08:11.89 from sticking together, helping the lungs to inflate. 00:08:11.92\00:08:16.32 Imagine if you had two wet sheets, a paper 00:08:16.36\00:08:20.30 and you put them together they would stick, 00:08:20.33\00:08:23.03 because of the surface tension, wouldn't they? 00:08:23.06\00:08:26.33 But the surfactant is designed to reduce that surface tension 00:08:26.37\00:08:29.90 between the tissues. 00:08:29.94\00:08:31.97 And the surfactant level does not reach its peak 00:08:32.01\00:08:34.84 until about 37 weeks. 00:08:34.88\00:08:37.55 This is why babies born before 37 weeks 00:08:37.58\00:08:41.08 are considered premature. 00:08:41.12\00:08:44.09 In Job 27:3 we read, 00:08:44.12\00:08:47.96 "All the while my breath is in me, 00:08:47.99\00:08:49.96 and the spirit of God is in my nostrils." 00:08:49.99\00:08:53.26 The word spirit here comes from the Hebrew word Ruach, 00:08:53.29\00:08:58.47 which means wind or breath of life, 00:08:58.50\00:09:01.40 that comes from God. 00:09:01.44\00:09:03.30 He not only gives the baby the breath of life 00:09:03.34\00:09:06.27 but provides everything necessary 00:09:06.31\00:09:10.11 to keep the breath sustain. 00:09:10.15\00:09:13.25 Okay, now we come to week 30 to 32. 00:09:13.28\00:09:16.99 The baby may weigh between 3 and 4 pounds 00:09:17.02\00:09:20.32 and reach 16 to 17 inches. 00:09:20.36\00:09:23.93 As you can see the size is gaining rapidly. 00:09:23.96\00:09:27.36 There is now less space in the uterus 00:09:27.40\00:09:30.00 and the mother might feel 00:09:30.03\00:09:31.37 like she's running out of room in her belly. 00:09:31.40\00:09:34.14 Generally baby will have settled 00:09:34.17\00:09:36.24 into a head down position by now, 00:09:36.27\00:09:39.31 for that is what they naturally tend to do. 00:09:39.34\00:09:42.44 Only about 5 percent or less that babies 00:09:42.48\00:09:45.31 will assume a breech position by full term. 00:09:45.35\00:09:49.85 Head down is a best position of course 00:09:49.88\00:09:52.45 making the delivery a little easier. 00:09:52.49\00:09:56.09 Hands are fully formed by this time 00:09:56.12\00:09:58.49 and the baby may be seen in an ultrasound 00:09:58.53\00:10:01.36 clasping his hands together or grabbing his feet 00:10:01.40\00:10:06.43 I have seen them taking hold of the cord, 00:10:06.47\00:10:09.70 this is all a part of muscle, nerve, 00:10:09.74\00:10:11.94 and brain development. 00:10:11.97\00:10:14.48 Now something else may happen about this time. 00:10:14.51\00:10:18.98 Have you ever heard of the term Braxton Hicks, 00:10:19.01\00:10:22.52 a man by that name discovered 00:10:22.55\00:10:24.52 that expectant mothers sometimes had contractions 00:10:24.55\00:10:28.02 that did not lead to labor. 00:10:28.06\00:10:30.46 These contractions can appear about this time, 00:10:30.49\00:10:34.00 but they've been known to occur even earlier. 00:10:34.03\00:10:37.53 These have also been considered practice contractions 00:10:37.57\00:10:42.27 as they will increase 00:10:42.30\00:10:44.04 and intensify the closer you get to delivery. 00:10:44.07\00:10:47.91 These contractions are not painful, 00:10:47.94\00:10:49.91 but they apparently have a purpose 00:10:49.94\00:10:52.31 toning up the muscles in the uterus, 00:10:52.35\00:10:54.85 and helping the blood circulation 00:10:54.88\00:10:57.19 to the placenta. 00:10:57.22\00:10:58.55 At 34 to 35 weeks, 00:10:58.59\00:11:00.19 the baby should be about 18 inches 00:11:00.22\00:11:02.22 and weigh between 4 and 5 pounds. 00:11:02.26\00:11:04.79 Fat deposits are beginning to develop 00:11:04.83\00:11:07.30 which will help regulate the baby's temperature. 00:11:07.33\00:11:11.03 The amount of fat will not be quite enough 00:11:11.07\00:11:13.54 to keep him warm if delivered at this time, 00:11:13.57\00:11:16.34 so an incubator might be necessary. 00:11:16.37\00:11:19.07 The volume of amniotic fluid 00:11:19.11\00:11:21.84 will generally peak at this point to about a quart, 00:11:21.88\00:11:25.45 and then gradually decrease until birth. 00:11:25.48\00:11:28.32 This decrease will allow more space for the baby. 00:11:28.35\00:11:32.25 Too much fluid or too little fluid could be a problem, 00:11:32.29\00:11:36.19 but fortunately 00:11:36.22\00:11:37.56 these conditions are somewhat rare. 00:11:37.59\00:11:40.00 Now could this optimal amount of amniotic fluid 00:11:40.03\00:11:42.86 just happened by chance, obviously not. 00:11:42.90\00:11:46.43 This is more evidence of God's divine design. 00:11:46.47\00:11:50.07 This brings us to our last 4 weeks of pregnancy 00:11:50.11\00:11:53.78 providing you don't go over. 00:11:53.81\00:11:55.88 The baby may grow half a pound or more per week, 00:11:55.91\00:11:59.71 now putting on that necessary fat 00:11:59.75\00:12:01.78 to maintain the right body temperature. 00:12:01.82\00:12:04.32 The baby is perfectly formed at this point, 00:12:04.35\00:12:07.06 but we would like to reach at least 37 weeks 00:12:07.09\00:12:10.76 before delivery 00:12:10.79\00:12:12.33 which will allow for the lungs to strengthen 00:12:12.36\00:12:14.70 and the proper amount of surfactant to be present. 00:12:14.73\00:12:18.53 His movement will probably decline somewhat 00:12:18.57\00:12:21.00 as he gets settled into the fetal position. 00:12:21.04\00:12:26.01 Okay, you're finally here, full term 40 weeks, 00:12:26.04\00:12:31.01 however there is no problem 00:12:31.05\00:12:32.68 if you should happen to go 42 weeks, 00:12:32.71\00:12:35.35 but problems could arise, if you go any longer than that. 00:12:35.38\00:12:39.52 Only about 5 percent of women give birth on their due day, 00:12:39.55\00:12:44.33 so don't be surprised if you don't give birth 00:12:44.36\00:12:47.13 right on your estimated due date. 00:12:47.16\00:12:50.00 On average the baby should weigh anywhere 00:12:50.03\00:12:52.10 from 7 to 8
