random chance, 00:00:21.08\00:00:27.39 they say it all began with a big bang. 00:00:27.42\00:00:31.53 But when we look at the amazing human body, 00:00:31.56\00:00:34.20 the answer is obvious. 00:00:34.23\00:00:36.23 The complexity of the design exceeds 00:00:36.26\00:00:38.47 any thing man has ever made. 00:00:38.50\00:00:41.14 The body, it only have been designed 00:00:41.17\00:00:43.94 by the master designer we read about in the Bible. 00:00:43.97\00:00:47.94 Join us as we explore the miraculous development 00:00:47.98\00:00:51.18 of the human baby. 00:00:51.21\00:00:52.75 Devine Design. 00:01:08.76\00:01:11.00 What a blessing it is to see 00:01:22.34\00:01:24.25 and to hold a precious little baby, 00:01:24.28\00:01:27.35 just to think that God has blessed us 00:01:27.38\00:01:29.85 and entrusted us with a new life. 00:01:29.88\00:01:32.19 A mission if you will to raise that child to recognize 00:01:32.22\00:01:36.32 God's purpose for him or her in this world. 00:01:36.36\00:01:40.33 To give that child every advantage in health, 00:01:40.36\00:01:43.16 education, moral training and spiritual growth 00:01:43.20\00:01:46.74 should be the aim of every parent. 00:01:46.77\00:01:49.40 But how much thought do we give 00:01:49.44\00:01:51.14 to how that baby forms in the womb. 00:01:51.17\00:01:54.18 More importantly, 00:01:54.21\00:01:55.54 how much consideration 00:01:55.58\00:01:56.91 do we give to the development of the baby, 00:01:56.95\00:01:59.31 the nutritional needs, 00:01:59.35\00:02:00.95 the environment and all the prenatal influences 00:02:00.98\00:02:04.12 that will affect the baby even before it is born? 00:02:04.15\00:02:08.19 Have you pondered the idea that character development, 00:02:08.22\00:02:11.06 it actually begins in the womb. 00:02:11.09\00:02:14.23 We're excited about a new series 00:02:14.26\00:02:16.36 dealing with these very questions. 00:02:16.40\00:02:18.67 We'll examine how we are truly a product of divine design. 00:02:18.70\00:02:23.41 The miraculous creation of a new human life 00:02:23.44\00:02:26.27 will be explored from conception to birth. 00:02:26.31\00:02:30.38 We'll see such things as the amazing journey 00:02:30.41\00:02:32.65 of the egg. 00:02:32.68\00:02:34.02 The incredible functions of the placenta. 00:02:34.05\00:02:36.18 How the baby grows in the uterus? 00:02:36.22\00:02:38.49 And how mothers and even fathers 00:02:38.52\00:02:40.16 can affect the health and wellbeing 00:02:40.19\00:02:41.86 of the baby before birth? 00:02:41.89\00:02:44.76 We'll discuss labor and delivery, 00:02:44.79\00:02:47.03 how to minimize C-sections and comfort measures 00:02:47.06\00:02:50.83 that can greatly help the mother 00:02:50.87\00:02:52.33 through the prenatal period, 00:02:52.37\00:02:54.00 during labor and delivery and afterward. 00:02:54.04\00:02:57.47 We'll also share our tips for caring 00:02:57.51\00:02:59.47 for your precious little new born. 00:02:59.51\00:03:03.21 We know you'll be blessed 00:03:03.24\00:03:05.08 whether you're an expectant couple, 00:03:05.11\00:03:07.12 a medical missionary 00:03:07.15\00:03:08.65 or just curious about child birth. 00:03:08.68\00:03:11.12 Even grandparents might enjoy this. 00:03:11.15\00:03:13.92 So please join us as we begin 00:03:13.96\00:03:15.56 this first episode of Divine Design. 00:03:15.59\00:03:18.89 Hello, I'm Patti Barnes, 00:03:21.83\00:03:23.57 an instructor and director of the Midwifery Program 00:03:23.60\00:03:26.60 at Hartland College. 00:03:26.63\00:03:28.24 I would like to share with you just a few of the many 00:03:28.27\00:03:31.31 astounding wonders of child birth. 00:03:31.34\00:03:33.61 In Jeremiah 1:4-5, we read these amazing words. 00:03:33.64\00:03:39.35 "Then the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, 00:03:39.38\00:03:42.08 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee, 00:03:42.12\00:03:44.65 and before thou camest forth out of the womb 00:03:44.69\00:03:46.65 I sanctified thee, 00:03:46.69\00:03:48.06 and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations." 00:03:48.09\00:03:52.36 He knows each and everyone of us 00:03:52.39\00:03:54.76 and he knew us before we are born. 00:03:54.80\00:03:57.27 In Psalm 139-13 we read. 00:03:57.30\00:04:00.54 "For thou hast possessed my reins, 00:04:00.57\00:04:02.57 thou hast covered me in my mother's womb." 00:04:02.60\00:04:05.27 So you see, God is not just a bystander. 00:04:05.31\00:04:08.91 He's actively involved in the formation 00:04:08.94\00:04:11.61 of every individual. 00:04:11.65\00:04:13.52 The next verse says. 00:04:13.55\00:04:15.18 "I will praise thee, 00:04:15.22\00:04:16.55 for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: 00:04:16.58\00:04:18.92 marvelous are thy works, 00:04:18.95\00:04:20.29 and that my soul knoweth right well." 00:04:20.32\00:04:23.06 The word "fearfully" comes from a Hebrew word, 00:04:23.09\00:04:26.29 meaning reverently. 00:04:26.33\00:04:27.86 And "wonderfully" is derived from a Hebrew word, 00:04:27.90\00:04:30.57 meaning differently or distinctly. 00:04:30.60\00:04:33.77 So each of us is reverently and distinctly made. 00:04:33.80\00:04:39.17 Each of us are unique individuals. 00:04:39.21\00:04:41.21 You and I have been specifically designed by God. 00:04:41.24\00:04:45.61 We can see this in the fact that 00:04:45.65\00:04:47.62 no two fingerprints are alike. 00:04:47.65\00:04:50.15 No two brains are deigned like either. 00:04:50.19\00:04:53.46 The initial creases and grooves in the brain 00:04:53.49\00:04:55.76 formed a unique brain print if you will. 00:04:55.79\00:04:59.23 Through the modern science and technology, 00:04:59.26\00:05:01.56 we have been able to explore into development of the baby 00:05:01.60\00:05:04.53 in the womb to at least graft some of the wonders 00:05:04.57\00:05:07.24 that God performs to bring a new life into the world. 00:05:07.27\00:05:10.61 Today we want to just take a peek 00:05:10.64\00:05:13.71 into this amazing process of the creation of life 00:05:13.74\00:05:16.61 in the womb. 00:05:16.64\00:05:17.98 Now let's look at some of the astounding facts 00:05:18.01\00:05:20.82 of an incredible journey of a single egg cell 00:05:20.85\00:05:24.25 from the ovary to the uterus. 00:05:24.29\00:05:26.49 Just this little glimpse will be enough 00:05:26.52\00:05:28.52 to cause you to say with the psalmist, 00:05:28.56\00:05:30.93 I am fearfully and wonderfully made. 00:05:30.96\00:05:33.19 Did you know that when a baby girl is born, 00:05:34.53\00:05:37.60 she is born with all the eggs that she will ever need? 00:05:37.63\00:05:41.67 Approximately 400,000 egg cells are in her two ovaries. 00:05:41.70\00:05:47.98 At the time of ovulation, 00:05:48.01\00:05:49.84 one egg cell is released from one of the ovaries. 00:05:49.88\00:05:53.75 The next ovulation will release an egg cell 00:05:53.78\00:05:56.32 from the other ovary, 00:05:56.35\00:05:58.02 and they alternate back and forth. 00:05:58.05\00:06:01.06 Amazingly, if one ovary should become damage 00:06:01.09\00:06:04.19 and unable to release an egg, 00:06:04.23\00:06:06.36 the other will sense the failure 00:06:06.39\00:06:08.23 and release an egg instead. 00:06:08.26\00:06:11.00 So there will always be an egg cell release. 00:06:11.03\00:06:14.57 The oviducts, 00:06:14.60\00:06:15.94 also called the fallopian tubes have finger like 00:06:15.97\00:06:19.51 appendages at the end that captures the egg cell 00:06:19.54\00:06:23.61 and draws it into the tube. 00:06:23.65\00:06:26.05 Without this capture, 00:06:26.08\00:06:27.62 the egg cell could wander off 00:06:27.65\00:06:29.75 and perhaps eventually implant in the wrong place. 00:06:29.78\00:06:33.09 This would mean no baby 00:06:33.12\00:06:34.56 and possibly serious consequences 00:06:34.59\00:06:37.73 to the mother. 00:06:37.76\00:06:40.20 Once inside the fallopian tube, 00:06:40.23\00:06:42.20 the egg cell becomes surrounded by thousands of little cells 00:06:42.23\00:06:46.20 that act as escorts and nurse maids for the egg. 00:06:46.23\00:06:50.61 They will supply the egg with all it needs 00:06:50.64\00:06:53.34 in addition to supplying the egg, 00:06:53.38\00:06:56.01 they'll also have a sticky surface 00:06:56.04\00:06:58.48 that allows the egg to be propelled by the cilia, 00:06:58.51\00:07:02.98 which are trillions of little hair 00:07:03.02\00:07:04.85 like structures 00:07:04.89\00:07:06.22 that moves the egg in the rhythmic waving motion 00:07:06.25\00:07:09.72 to the tube toward the uterus. 00:07:09.76\00:07:13.43 If the cell is fertilized, 00:07:13.46\00:07:15.56 it will be within the first 24 hours of the journey. 00:07:15.60\00:07:20.27 It is then called a zygote. 00:07:20.30\00:07:23.00 The gender of the baby is determined 00:07:23.04\00:07:25.17 at this point of conception. 00:07:25.21\00:07:27.64 There are many miracles that take place in that process 00:07:27.68\00:07:31.65 but we won't have time to touch them now. 00:07:31.68\00:07:35.72 About 30 hours, 00:07:35.75\00:07:37.09 the first cell division takes place. 00:07:37.12\00:07:39.62 The egg is about the size of a dot on an eye or period 00:07:39.65\00:07:45.09 at the end of the sentence. 00:07:45.13\00:07:47.06 It remained basically the same size when it divides 00:07:47.10\00:07:50.67 but now there are two cells rather than one. 00:07:50.70\00:07:54.04 These two cells divide to make four, 00:07:54.07\00:07:57.04 this process of cell division is called mitosis 00:07:57.07\00:08:01.14 and about four and a half days it will become a blastocyst, 00:08:01.18\00:08:05.78 having a hollow section on one side 00:08:05.81\00:08:08.15 and a cluster of cells on the other 00:08:08.18\00:08:10.59 that we call the embryo that will form the baby. 00:08:10.62\00:08:15.26 At the surface around the hollow section possibility 00:08:15.29\00:08:18.96 to implant itself into the uterus 00:08:18.99\00:08:22.16 which in itself is a miracle. 00:08:22.20\00:08:25.87 This implantation in the uterus takes place 00:08:25.90\00:08:28.50 around the sixth day, 00:08:28.54\00:08:30.51 then the baby is sort of put on hold, 00:08:30.54\00:08:33.24 resting from the journey of six days. 00:08:33.27\00:08:36.34 While the production of the baby 00:08:36.38\00:08:38.18 is in this resting state, the placenta is formed. 00:08:38.21\00:08:42.18 That amazing organ that will be the baby's life support 00:08:42.22\00:08:46.49 until he or she is born. 00:08:46.52\00:08:50.59 It is not difficult to see the parallels between 00:08:50.63\00:08:53.09 reproduction and the creation week. 00:08:53.13\00:08:56.33 There were divisions. 00:08:56.36\00:08:57.80 The Lord divided the waters above from the waters beneath. 00:08:57.83\00:09:02.57 He also divided dry land from the waters. 00:09:02.60\00:09:05.51 He built a support system necessary 00:09:05.54\00:09:08.04 to sustain life first, 00:09:08.08\00:09:10.21 then created the animals and man. 00:09:10.25\00:09:13.28 The Lord created for six days and then rest the seventh. 00:09:13.31\00:09:17.59 What a privilege it is for us women 00:09:17.62\00:09:20.36 to be able to carry in our womb an illustration 00:09:20.39\00:09:24.16 of God's creation. 00:09:24.19\00:09:26.09 Now we want to take just a quick glimpse 00:09:26.13\00:09:29.00 at a support system that God has put in the womb 00:09:29.03\00:09:32.00 for the developing baby. 00:09:32.03\00:09:33.74 Remember that on the sixth day the blastocyst implants itself 00:09:33.77\00:09:37.71 into the uterine wall, 00:09:37.74\00:09:39.27 another amazing thing begins to happen. 00:09:39.31\00:09:42.18 At this point, 00:09:42.21\00:09:43.55 the outer cell begins 00:09:43.58\00:09:44.91 constructing a primitive placenta. 00:09:44.95\00:09:47.48 The placenta is the most remarkable organ 00:09:47.52\00:09:50.85 of the human body performing many tasks. 00:09:50.89\00:09:54.82 Now let's look at some of these things. 00:09:54.86\00:09:57.99 Did you know that the placenta brings 00:09:58.03\00:09:59.59 oxygen to the baby and carries away 00:09:59.63\00:10:02.13 carbon dioxide and waste? 00:10:02.16\00:10:04.83 It is also stores carbohydrates, protein, 00:10:04.87\00:10:09.10 calcium and all the nutrition and then it releases them 00:10:09.14\00:10:13.54 as the baby needs them. 00:10:13.58\00:10:15.08 This is why it is so very important 00:10:15.11\00:10:17.45 to eat healthy 00:10:17.48\00:10:18.81 so that the proper nutrition is available to the baby. 00:10:18.85\00:10:22.62 Also the placenta provides the hormones 00:10:22.65\00:10:24.89 that helps maintain the pregnancy. 00:10:24.92\00:10:27.96 The placenta has to serve as the baby's lungs, 00:10:27.99\00:10:30.89 digestive system, liver, kidneys and immune system. 00:10:30.93\00:10:35.46 What an amazing organ? 00:10:35.50\00:10:37.50 It offers protection for the baby 00:10:37.53\00:10:39.27 from many harmful bacteria and substances. 00:10:39.30\00:10:42.60 But there are some things that can cross the placenta 00:10:42.64\00:10:45.34 and adversely affect the baby. 00:10:45.37\00:10:47.94 These include alcohol, nicotine, 00:10:47.98\00:10:50.35 drugs and some viruses. 00:10:50.38\00:10:52.68 This is why it is vitally important 00:10:52.71\00:10:55.22 for mothers to abstain 00:10:55.25\00:10:56.58 from these health destroying substances, 00:10:56.62\00:10:58.89 especially when pregnant. 00:10:58.92\00:11:00.76 We will speak more on this subject a little later. 00:11:00.79\00:11:04.06 The essential nutrients, hormones, 00:11:04.09\00:11:06.59 gases and antibodies from the mother 00:11:06.63\00:11:08.96 are exchanged in the placenta. 00:11:09.00\00:11:10.97 The mother's blood is pumped to and from the placenta, 00:11:11.00\00:11:14.44 while the baby's blood is pumped through the cord 00:11:14.47\00:11:17.44 to and from the placenta. 00:11:17.47\00:11:19.37 Amazingly, their blood never mixes. 00:11:19.41\00:11:22.51 The cord is a lifeline from the mother to the baby. 00:11:22.54\00:11:26.48 This should remind us that spiritually 00:11:26.51\00:11:28.92 Christ is our lifeline linking humanity to divinity, 00:11:28.95\00:11:34.06 our heart to his heart and providing everything 00:11:34.09\00:11:37.39 we need to live the Christian life. 00:11:37.43\00:11:40.50 At birth, the Lord provides miraculously 00:11:40.53\00:11:43.06 for the baby's own organs now fully formed to take over. 00:11:43.10\00:11:47.87 The lungs, the kidneys, 00:11:47.90\00:11:49.24 the liver and all the other organs 00:11:49.27\00:11:51.51 take up the work that the placenta has been doing 00:11:51.54\00:11:54.24 for the past eights months or more. 00:11:54.28\00:11:57.01 As you can see none of this could possibly happen 00:11:57.05\00:12:00.65 by chance. 00:12:00.68\00:12:02.32 We are truly, fearfully and wonderfully made. 00:12:02.35\00:12:05.42 After the baby is born, 00:12:06.55\00:12:07.92 another miracle must take place to save the mother's life. 00:12:07.96\00:12:11.93 Contractions eventually cause the expulsion of the placenta. 00:12:11.96\00:12:16.46 When this happens as many as 20 severed arteries 00:12:16.50\00:12:19.93 are left behind with a potential pouring out 00:12:19.97\00:12:23.71 about a pint of blood every minute. 00:12:23.74\00:12:26.81 Since the average woman only has 5 to 6 quarts 00:12:26.84\00:12:30.01 of blood in her body, 00:12:30.05\00:12:31.51 you can see the emergency situation created here. 00:12:31.55\00:12:34.88 Within 10 minutes all of her blood 00:12:34.92\00:12:37.02 could be drained. 00:12:37.05\00:12:38.52 There is no need to panic however, 00:12:38.55\00:12:41.09 in God's infinite wisdom, 00:12:41.12\00:12:43.43 He provided each of the severed arteries 00:12:43.46\00:12:46.36 with a precisely placed muscular sphincter 00:12:46.39\00:12:50.03 that closes off the vessel like a hemostat. 00:12:50.07\00:12:53.50 Pinching it close to prevent loss of blood. 00:12:53.54\00:12:56.50 This amazing process takes place 00:12:56.54\00:12:58.61 so quickly that on the average only about 00:12:58.64\00:13:02.21 one pint of blood is lost. 00:13:02.24\00:13:04.65 How thankful we should be for this disposal organ, 00:13:04.68\00:13:08.25 the placenta. 00:13:08.28\00:13:09.68 It has performed its task well and is ready to fade away. 00:13:09.72\00:13:13.82 This is not just some old tissue 00:13:13.86\00:13:15.79 we call the after birth 00:13:15.82\00:13:17.43 but the support system that provided 00:13:17.46\00:13:20.06 for the baby all these month in the womb 00:13:20.10\00:13:23.57 until the umbilical cord was cut. 00:13:23.60\00:13:26.23 In the devotional book, 00:13:27.60\00:13:28.94 Our High Calling page 45 we read... 00:13:28.97\00:13:32.31 "Measure the cord if you can, 00:13:32.34\00:13:34.21 that has been
