00:21 Hello friends welcome to Books
00:23 of the Book! 00:24 We are continuing our study 00:26 and we are in Daniel Chapter 11 00:28 and my name is James Rafferty. 00:29 And I am Ty Gibson and thank 00:30 you for joining us for this 00:32 Bible study in the book 00:33 of Daniel. 00:34 We want to invite you to get 00:35 your Bible and open up to Daniel 00:37 Chapter 11. 00:39 James this is a challenging chapter. 00:42 It has a lot of details that covers a lot of history. 00:46 When we look at Daniel Chapter 11, we need to be mindful 00:49 the fact that there are a lot of details. 00:52 It is rather cumbersome to get through but the rewards 00:55 are great as we move through the preliminary history and 00:59 come to the central issue of Daniel Chapter 11. 01:03 That is the Prince of the covenant and the attack that is 01:07 being made on the new covenant that Jesus has 01:10 confirmed and ratified. 01:11 One of the easiest ways, I think, to understand Daniel 01:15 11, is to break it down into parts. 01:17 Basically Daniel Chapter 11 is a continuation of 01:21 Daniel 2, 7, and 8. 01:24 These are parallel prophecies at each one of them is 01:26 based on the principle of repeat and enlarge. 01:29 Once you understand and see that big framework, 01:31 and you understand the principle of repeat and enlarge 01:34 it's easy to pick up Daniel 11 and dissected it, 01:37 break it into parts. 01:39 For us, I think, focus on the most important parts. 01:42 So Daniel 11 begins in verse 1 with the Medo Persian 01:46 kingdom and now we know in Daniel 2 and 7 that Babylon 01:51 is where we begin with, the power we begin with. 01:54 But Daniel 8 and Daniel 11, Babylon has passed from the 01:57 scene, so we picked up here with Medo Persia and move 02:00 quickly from Medo Persia right into Greece in verse 3. 02:03 Verses 3 all the way down to verse 13 are dealing with 02:07 the nitty-gritty details of this power Greece. 02:10 We continue to do that all the way through this prophecy. 02:12 Daniel in Chapter 11 is basically expounding and 02:17 expanding, and enlarging upon the previous prophecies 02:21 in 2, 7 and 8. 02:24 Once we move through the brief mention of the Media 02:27 Persia empire, in verses 1 and 2, and then a rather 02:32 detail explanation of successive kings and power 02:36 struggles in the Grecian kingdom from Chapter 11, 02:40 verses 3 through 13. 02:43 Then in verse 14 it introduces the pagan Roman empire. 02:48 From verse 14 onward, there is a developmental process 02:52 that brings us to Daniel's real point, and that is 02:56 drawing on us into the Messiah who is the Prince of 03:00 the covenant in verse 22. 03:03 Absolutely, in fact you can see right here in verses 20 03:09 and 21 a clear connection between the rulers in pagan 03:14 Rome at Christ's time, and the birth of Christ. 03:17 For example in verse 20 it says, "then shall stand up" 03:20 "in his estate," that means the place of these Roman 03:24 empires, "a raiser of taxes in the glory of the kingdom. " 03:27 Now if you compare that with Luke Chapter 2 and verse 1 03:32 and again Luke was a historian, so Luke records this from 03:35 that angle which is helpful for us when we are looking 03:39 at prophecy and history. 03:41 In Luke Chapter 2 and verse 1, it says, "and it came" 03:45 "to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from" 03:48 "Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. " 03:52 So Joseph is traveling with Mary, his espoused wife, 03:56 in verse 5 of Luke Chapter 2. 03:58 They are going to Bethlehem for the census and this taxing. 04:02 That correlates, or parallels perfectly with the prophecy 04:06 we have here in verse 20 of Daniel Chapter 11. 04:09 This gives us a time frame, this is the pagan Roman 04:12 empire and the time that Jesus Christ is born. 04:15 Yes and in verse 20 of Chapter 11 of Daniel it speaks of 04:20 one who is an imposer of taxes, that is Caesar Augustus 04:24 at the time of the birth of Christ. 04:27 What about verse 21? 04:28 21 is speaking of the one who follows Caesar Augustus. 04:33 If you look here in, again in the book of Luke Chapter 3, 04:37 instead of Chapter 2. 04:39 You find Tiberius Caesar mentioned. 04:42 So in Luke Chapter 3 beginning with verse 1, "now in the" 04:45 "15th year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar," 04:48 "Pontius Pilate being governor. " 04:50 The 15th year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar is when 04:54 Jesus is 27 years old, or about 30 years of age when he 04:57 is baptized, and so Tiberius Caesar is also the one under 05:01 whose rule Pontius Pilate is reigning. 05:04 That brings us to the fulfillment of the next part of 05:07 this prophecy, verse 22. 05:09 "And with the arms of a flood shall they," and this is 05:12 speaking prophetically of God's people, "be overflown" 05:16 "before him, and shall be broken yea, also the Prince" 05:19 "of the covenant. " 05:20 Which is Jesus, so this is clearly indicating in 05:23 historic secession here that we will have the taxation 05:27 that occurs with Caesar Augustus, and the next one that 05:31 comes into place is Tiberius Caesar under whose rule 05:35 Jesus is crucified. 05:38 Yeah, so these verses are very clear and they give us 05:41 a central point from which to understand the previous 05:44 verses and the verses to follow. 05:46 They direct us to the birth and the cross, the sacrifice 05:49 death of Jesus Christ and the two Caesars that reigned, 05:52 Augustus Caesar and Tiberius Caesar during that time. 05:56 Now Jesus is referred to by many different terms and 05:59 symbols in Scripture. 06:01 Here is a term that is used is that he is the Prince of 06:04 covenant, as we pointed out previously James, all of the 06:07 book of Daniel is moving us deeper, deeper into an 06:11 understanding of the new covenant that Jesus Christ, 06:14 the Savior of the world, will confirm and establish by 06:18 His life and His death. 06:20 Now when we come to the Chapter 11 we have an 06:23 increased focus on Jesus as the Prince of the covenant and the 06:29 warfare that is taking place at the end time, 06:32 from the time of Jesus through to the end time 06:36 regarding the holy covenant. 06:38 Yes Ty, so we are looking at here in Daniel 11 is 06:42 basically a summation, a summation of Daniel 2, 7, 8. 06:45 What do we see in 2, 7, 8? 06:46 We have seen a development of the new covenant and 06:50 the attack that was made against it. 06:51 For example, Daniel 2, the rock that hits the image at 06:55 the feet, is a rock that is brought without hands. 06:58 It is no human power, it is God's power. 07:00 Daniel 7, he will think to change times and laws. 07:02 An attack against the law of God which is part 07:05 of the new covenant. 07:06 Daniel 8, he will seek to cast the truth to the ground, 07:09 and the sanctuary to the ground by attacking the 07:11 mediation or the forgiveness of sins, through Jesus 07:13 Christ in the heavenly sanctuary. 07:15 So all of these elements are developed through these 07:18 prophecies and come together and are summarized right 07:21 here in Daniel 11. 07:22 What is the point of all these different prophecies? 07:25 They are bringing us to understand the Prince of the new 07:27 covenant and the attack that is being made against 07:30 the new covenant. 07:31 Now we noted in a previous study James, that Jesus 07:35 is specifically identified in Chapter 9 and verse 26 07:40 as the Messiah, and then down in verse 27, He is the one 07:44 who confirms the covenant. 07:46 So the Messiah is the one who confirms the covenant. 07:49 We know this is speaking of the new covenant and not the 07:52 old covenant because it is in reference to the Messiah 07:55 when He comes to establish the new covenant. 07:57 And also because the whole book of Daniel is directing 07:59 us to the new covenant. 08:01 Exactly! Exactly, and now as we continue in Chapter 11, 08:04 we have made the transition from the Media Persian 08:07 kingdom to the Grecian kingdom and then into the pagan 08:10 Roman phase of the Roman empire. 08:13 Then when we come down to verses 28 and 29, we have a 08:18 transition beginning to occur here from the pagan Roman 08:23 phase to the papal Roman phase. 08:25 We want to just notice here, that in verse 28, 08:28 it says very clearly that he shall be moved against 08:32 the holy covenant, and that is the great controversy 08:35 aspect of the vision. 08:38 It says more here, Jesus is seeking to establish the new 08:41 covenant, the little horn power previously mentioned in 08:46 Chapter 7 and 8, and here in this prophecy the papal 08:50 Roman power is using its influence against the holy 08:54 covenant to subvert, to prevent the new covenant from 08:57 coming to completion and fruition. 09:00 In fact you find this repeated over and over again. 09:03 Verse 28, the holy covenant, then it says here in 09:05 verse 30, "for the ships of Chittim shall come against" 09:08 "him: and therefore he shall be grieved, and return and" 09:11 "have indignation against the holy covenant: so shall he" 09:14 "do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with" 09:17 "them that forsake the holy covenant. " 09:19 Then again you go down to" 09:21 verse 32, "and such as do" 09:22 "wickedly against the" 09:24 "covenant shall he corrupt by" 09:25 "flatteries: but the people" 09:27 "that do know their God shall" 09:29 "be strong, and do exploits. " 09:30 So you have the covenant, the holy covenant, the 09:32 covenant, the covenant, you had mentioned here 09:34 4 or 5 times in the context of Daniel 11. 09:37 Then you have a summation of the people who know their 09:39 God, well here is the purpose, here is the underlying 09:42 goal of the new covenant. 09:44 That is a relationship with God. 09:46 The new covenant is all about bringing us into this 09:49 relationship with God, so we are connecting with Him. 09:52 That is what the book of Daniel is all about. 09:54 You see Daniel 1 through 6 expounding upon the life of 09:58 Daniel and the life of his friends, even through 10:01 Nebuchadnezzar expounding upon this development of 10:03 relationship, this trust relationship with God. 10:06 You see here in Daniel 11 when a summation of the whole 10:10 picture, a prophetic picture is given you see two powers. 10:13 One power is working against the covenant. 10:15 The other power is working to establish the 10:18 holy covenant and the conclusion of this 10:20 is a people who know their God. 10:22 What does it mean that they know their God? 10:25 This is a very significant terminology in Scripture, 10:28 James, because it is not referring to mere intellectual 10:31 knowledge, it is not referring to the idea they have a creed 10:36 memorized, it is not referring to any knowledge that is 10:40 external, or that is formal. 10:43 It's referring to a relationship with God that is very 10:47 intimate, very close and these people that are described 10:51 here are doing great exploits at the end of time. 10:54 These individuals know God in a very personal, 10:57 intimate sense. 10:58 There are few scriptures that come to mind 11:00 that uses this terminology. 11:01 One is where the new covenant is described in 11:04 Chapter 8 of the book of Hebrews 11:07 Where the new covenant involves this promise, 11:09 they shall not teach every man his neighbor's saying 11:13 know the Lord, for all shall know Me from the least 11:17 to the greatest. 11:19 In other words there is not going to be a necessity, 11:22 among these people of evangelizing one another in 11:26 the sense of leading them to know God, because in fact 11:29 they will know God on a personal level 11:30 through the new covenant. 11:31 Also I think of the usage of the word by Jesus in John 11:35 Chapter 17 and verse 3, were Jesus said this is life 11:39 eternal that they might know You the only true God, 11:43 and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. 11:45 Jesus later on in John 17 defines what He means when 11:50 He says, eternal life is to know Him. 11:52 He says in verses 25 and 26 that those who know Him 11:56 are those who partake of the love of the Father and 12:01 the Son in personal relationship. 12:03 So this is an identification of the people of God at 12:07 the end of time doing great exploits as partakers of the 12:12 new covenant and its intimate relationship with God. 12:15 It also seems to be indicate here Ty, there is some 12:18 deception, some flattery, there is a conflict going on 12:22 between these people who know their God and another power 12:25 that claims, professes to be of God. 12:29 Infect Jesus talks about this again in Matthew Chapter 7, 12:33 I think another indication in this prophecy is fulfilled 12:37 here, he says, concerning the end of time Matthew, 12:40 Chapter 7 verse 21, "not every one that saith unto me," 12:43 "Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven;" 12:47 "but he that do with the will of my Father" 12:49 "which is in heaven. " 12:50 Verse 22, "many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord," 12:54 "have we not prophesied in thy name? And in thy name" 12:58 "have cast out devils? And in thy name have done many" 13:01 "wonderful works?" Verse 23, "and then will I profess" 13:04 "unto them, I never knew you; depart from me," 13:08 "ye that work iniquity. " 13:09 This is a sad commentary on people who profess the name 13:12 of Christ, they profess to be Christians, they profess 13:16 to know God, they do many wonderful works in His name, 13:20 but Jesus says they don't know Me. 13:21 Because what? They are workers of iniquity and this is 13:24 why is so vital for us to recognize, and our audience to 13:28 recognize, our viewers to recognize, that the new 13:31 covenant is more than many are teaching it to be 13:34 in these last days. 13:35 The new covenant is inclusive in Hebrews 13:38 Chapter 8 and 10. 13:40 It is inclusive not only in the forgiveness but God 13:43 putting His laws in our hearts and minds so that we 13:45 will not be workers of iniquity. 13:47 So that when we know God and come into a relationship 13:49 with God we will be workers of righteousness and be 13:52 in harmony with His Commandments. 13:54 We will be keeping His law as a law of love to God 13:56 and unto our neighbors. 13:58 Don't go away, we will be right back! |
