Hello friends welcome to Books 00:00:21.30\00:00:23.54 of the Book! 00:00:23.57\00:00:24.54 We are continuing our study 00:00:24.55\00:00:26.30 and we are in Daniel Chapter 11 00:00:26.34\00:00:28.09 and my name is James Rafferty. 00:00:28.13\00:00:29.59 And I am Ty Gibson and thank 00:00:29.62\00:00:30.95 you for joining us for this 00:00:30.98\00:00:32.24 Bible study in the book 00:00:32.27\00:00:33.24 of Daniel. 00:00:33.25\00:00:34.30 We want to invite you to get 00:00:34.34\00:00:35.90 your Bible and open up to Daniel 00:00:35.93\00:00:37.67 Chapter 11. 00:00:37.71\00:00:39.10 James this is a challenging chapter. 00:00:39.14\00:00:42.18 It has a lot of details that covers a lot of history. 00:00:42.22\00:00:46.07 When we look at Daniel Chapter 11, we need to be mindful 00:00:46.11\00:00:49.93 the fact that there are a lot of details. 00:00:49.97\00:00:52.56 It is rather cumbersome to get through but the rewards 00:00:52.60\00:00:55.94 are great as we move through the preliminary history and 00:00:55.97\00:00:59.28 come to the central issue of Daniel Chapter 11. 00:00:59.31\00:01:03.50 That is the Prince of the covenant and the attack that is 00:01:03.54\00:01:07.58 being made on the new covenant that Jesus has 00:01:07.61\00:01:10.61 confirmed and ratified. 00:01:10.65\00:01:11.90 One of the easiest ways, I think, to understand Daniel 00:01:11.94\00:01:15.42 11, is to break it down into parts. 00:01:15.45\00:01:17.45 Basically Daniel Chapter 11 is a continuation of 00:01:17.49\00:01:21.15 Daniel 2, 7, and 8. 00:01:21.19\00:01:24.34 These are parallel prophecies at each one of them is 00:01:24.37\00:01:26.85 based on the principle of repeat and enlarge. 00:01:26.89\00:01:29.35 Once you understand and see that big framework, 00:01:29.38\00:01:31.77 and you understand the principle of repeat and enlarge 00:01:31.80\00:01:34.28 it's easy to pick up Daniel 11 and dissected it, 00:01:34.32\00:01:37.68 break it into parts. 00:01:37.72\00:01:39.09 For us, I think, focus on the most important parts. 00:01:39.12\00:01:42.75 So Daniel 11 begins in verse 1 with the Medo Persian 00:01:42.78\00:01:46.92 kingdom and now we know in Daniel 2 and 7 that Babylon 00:01:46.96\00:01:51.06 is where we begin with, the power we begin with. 00:01:51.09\00:01:54.00 But Daniel 8 and Daniel 11, Babylon has passed from the 00:01:54.04\00:01:57.03 scene, so we picked up here with Medo Persia and move 00:01:57.07\00:02:00.20 quickly from Medo Persia right into Greece in verse 3. 00:02:00.23\00:02:03.81 Verses 3 all the way down to verse 13 are dealing with 00:02:03.84\00:02:07.38 the nitty-gritty details of this power Greece. 00:02:07.42\00:02:10.50 We continue to do that all the way through this prophecy. 00:02:10.54\00:02:12.88 Daniel in Chapter 11 is basically expounding and 00:02:12.91\00:02:17.75 expanding, and enlarging upon the previous prophecies 00:02:17.78\00:02:21.83 in 2, 7 and 8. 00:02:21.87\00:02:24.19 Once we move through the brief mention of the Media 00:02:24.22\00:02:27.87 Persia empire, in verses 1 and 2, and then a rather 00:02:27.91\00:02:32.00 detail explanation of successive kings and power 00:02:32.03\00:02:36.19 struggles in the Grecian kingdom from Chapter 11, 00:02:36.22\00:02:40.34 verses 3 through 13. 00:02:40.38\00:02:43.38 Then in verse 14 it introduces the pagan Roman empire. 00:02:43.41\00:02:48.47 From verse 14 onward, there is a developmental process 00:02:48.50\00:02:52.47 that brings us to Daniel's real point, and that is 00:02:52.51\00:02:56.71 drawing on us into the Messiah who is the Prince of 00:02:56.75\00:03:00.92 the covenant in verse 22. 00:03:00.96\00:03:03.94 Absolutely, in fact you can see right here in verses 20 00:03:03.98\00:03:09.27 and 21 a clear connection between the rulers in pagan 00:03:09.30\00:03:14.55 Rome at Christ's time, and the birth of Christ. 00:03:14.59\00:03:17.74 For example in verse 20 it says, "then shall stand up" 00:03:17.78\00:03:20.91 "in his estate," that means the place of these Roman 00:03:20.95\00:03:24.01 empires, "a raiser of taxes in the glory of the kingdom. " 00:03:24.05\00:03:27.74 Now if you compare that with Luke Chapter 2 and verse 1 00:03:27.78\00:03:32.21 and again Luke was a historian, so Luke records this from 00:03:32.25\00:03:35.76 that angle which is helpful for us when we are looking 00:03:35.80\00:03:39.28 at prophecy and history. 00:03:39.31\00:03:41.30 In Luke Chapter 2 and verse 1, it says, "and it came" 00:03:41.33\00:03:45.19 "to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from" 00:03:45.22\00:03:48.59 "Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. " 00:03:48.62\00:03:52.34 So Joseph is traveling with Mary, his espoused wife, 00:03:52.38\00:03:56.07 in verse 5 of Luke Chapter 2. 00:03:56.10\00:03:58.46 They are going to Bethlehem for the census and this taxing. 00:03:58.50\00:04:02.36 That correlates, or parallels perfectly with the prophecy 00:04:02.40\00:04:06.23 we have here in verse 20 of Daniel Chapter 11. 00:04:06.26\00:04:09.48 This gives us a time frame, this is the pagan Roman 00:04:09.51\00:04:12.69 empire and the time that Jesus Christ is born. 00:04:12.73\00:04:15.91 Yes and in verse 20 of Chapter 11 of Daniel it speaks of 00:04:15.95\00:04:20.03 one who is an imposer of taxes, that is Caesar Augustus 00:04:20.07\00:04:24.12 at the time of the birth of Christ. 00:04:24.15\00:04:27.07 What about verse 21? 00:04:27.11\00:04:28.70 21 is speaking of the one who follows Caesar Augustus. 00:04:28.74\00:04:33.12 If you look here in, again in the book of Luke Chapter 3, 00:04:33.15\00:04:37.50 instead of Chapter 2. 00:04:37.53\00:04:39.55 You find Tiberius Caesar mentioned. 00:04:39.59\00:04:42.01 So in Luke Chapter 3 beginning with verse 1, "now in the" 00:04:42.05\00:04:45.49 "15th year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar," 00:04:45.53\00:04:48.95 "Pontius Pilate being governor. " 00:04:48.98\00:04:50.73 The 15th year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar is when 00:04:50.76\00:04:54.17 Jesus is 27 years old, or about 30 years of age when he 00:04:54.21\00:04:57.82 is baptized, and so Tiberius Caesar is also the one under 00:04:57.86\00:05:01.43 whose rule Pontius Pilate is reigning. 00:05:01.47\00:05:04.39 That brings us to the fulfillment of the next part of 00:05:04.43\00:05:07.70 this prophecy, verse 22. 00:05:07.74\00:05:09.53 "And with the arms of a flood shall they," and this is 00:05:09.56\00:05:12.58 speaking prophetically of God's people, "be overflown" 00:05:12.61\00:05:16.06 "before him, and shall be broken yea, also the Prince" 00:05:16.10\00:05:19.52 "of the covenant. " 00:05:19.55\00:05:20.84 Which is Jesus, so this is clearly indicating in 00:05:20.88\00:05:23.27 historic secession here that we will have the taxation 00:05:23.31\00:05:27.74 that occurs with Caesar Augustus, and the next one that 00:05:27.77\00:05:31.83 comes into place is Tiberius Caesar under whose rule 00:05:31.86\00:05:35.88 Jesus is crucified. 00:05:35.92\00:05:38.23 Yeah, so these verses are very clear and they give us 00:05:38.27\00:05:41.21 a central point from which to understand the previous 00:05:41.25\00:05:44.15 verses and the verses to follow. 00:05:44.19\00:05:45.97 They direct us to the birth and the cross, the sacrifice 00:05:46.00\00:05:49.64 death of Jesus Christ and the two Caesars that reigned, 00:05:49.67\00:05:52.89 Augustus Caesar and Tiberius Caesar during that time. 00:05:52.92\00:05:56.29 Now Jesus is referred to by many different terms and 00:05:56.33\00:05:59.67 symbols in Scripture. 00:05:59.70\00:06:01.00 Here is a term that is used is that he is the Prince of 00:06:01.04\00:06:04.26 covenant, as we pointed out previously James, all of the 00:06:04.30\00:06:07.49 book of Daniel is moving us deeper, deeper into an 00:06:07.52\00:06:11.42 understanding of the new covenant that Jesus Christ, 00:06:11.45\00:06:14.85 the Savior of the world, will confirm and establish by 00:06:14.89\00:06:18.26 His life and His death. 00:06:18.29\00:06:20.17 Now when we come to the Chapter 11 we have an 00:06:20.21\00:06:23.42 increased focus on Jesus as the Prince of the covenant and the 00:06:23.45\00:06:29.61 warfare that is taking place at the end time, 00:06:29.64\00:06:32.90 from the time of Jesus through to the end time 00:06:32.93\00:06:36.15 regarding the holy covenant. 00:06:36.19\00:06:38.38 Yes Ty, so we are looking at here in Daniel 11 is 00:06:38.42\00:06:41.97 basically a summation, a summation of Daniel 2, 7, 8. 00:06:42.00\00:06:45.52 What do we see in 2, 7, 8? 00:06:45.55\00:06:46.74 We have seen a development of the new covenant and 00:06:46.77\00:06:49.99 the attack that was made against it. 00:06:50.03\00:06:51.60 For example, Daniel 2, the rock that hits the image at 00:06:51.64\00:06:55.49 the feet, is a rock that is brought without hands. 00:06:55.52\00:06:58.92 It is no human power, it is God's power. 00:06:58.95\00:07:00.60 Daniel 7, he will think to change times and laws. 00:07:00.63\00:07:02.89 An attack against the law of God which is part 00:07:02.93\00:07:05.15 of the new covenant. 00:07:05.18\00:07:06.24 Daniel 8, he will seek to cast the truth to the ground, 00:07:06.28\00:07:09.53 and the sanctuary to the ground by attacking the 00:07:09.56\00:07:11.63 mediation or the forgiveness of sins, through Jesus 00:07:11.66\00:07:13.69 Christ in the heavenly sanctuary. 00:07:13.72\00:07:15.39 So all of these elements are developed through these 00:07:15.42\00:07:18.41 prophecies and come together and are summarized right 00:07:18.45\00:07:21.40 here in Daniel 11. 00:07:21.44\00:07:22.75 What is the point of all these different prophecies? 00:07:22.78\00:07:25.52 They are bringing us to understand the Prince of the new 00:07:25.56\00:07:27.87 covenant and the attack that is being made against 00:07:27.90\00:07:30.05 the new covenant. 00:07:30.09\00:07:31.06 Now we noted in a previous study James, that Jesus 00:07:31.07\00:07:35.39 is specifically identified in Chapter 9 and verse 26 00:07:35.42\00:07:40.13 as the Messiah, and then down in verse 27, He is the one 00:07:40.16\00:07:44.83 who confirms the covenant. 00:07:44.87\00:07:46.60 So the Messiah is the one who confirms the covenant. 00:07:46.64\00:07:49.53 We know this is speaking of the new covenant and not the 00:07:49.57\00:07:52.38 old covenant because it is in reference to the Messiah 00:07:52.42\00:07:55.20 when He comes to establish the new covenant. 00:07:55.23\00:07:57.53 And also because the whole book of Daniel is directing 00:07:57.56\00:07:59.93 us to the new covenant. 00:07:59.96\00:08:01.39 Exactly! Exactly, and now as we continue in Chapter 11, 00:08:01.42\00:08:04.53 we have made the transition from the Media Persian 00:08:04.57\00:08:07.72 kingdom to the Grecian kingdom and then into the pagan 00:08:07.76\00:08:10.88 Roman phase of the Roman empire. 00:08:10.91\00:08:13.62 Then when we come down to verses 28 and 29, we have a 00:08:13.66\00:08:18.59 transition beginning to occur here from the pagan Roman 00:08:18.62\00:08:23.52 phase to the papal Roman phase. 00:08:23.55\00:08:25.81 We want to just notice here, that in verse 28, 00:08:25.85\00:08:28.75 it says very clearly that he shall be moved against 00:08:28.78\00:08:32.16 the holy covenant, and that is the great controversy 00:08:32.19\00:08:35.53 aspect of the vision. 00:08:35.57\00:08:38.14 It says more here, Jesus is seeking to establish the new 00:08:38.18\00:08:41.86 covenant, the little horn power previously mentioned in 00:08:41.89\00:08:46.04 Chapter 7 and 8, and here in this prophecy the papal 00:08:46.08\00:08:50.14 Roman power is using its influence against the holy 00:08:50.17\00:08:53.98 covenant to subvert, to prevent the new covenant from 00:08:54.02\00:08:57.80 coming to completion and fruition. 00:08:57.83\00:09:00.19 In fact you find this repeated over and over again. 00:09:00.23\00:09:03.10 Verse 28, the holy covenant, then it says here in 00:09:03.13\00:09:05.94 verse 30, "for the ships of Chittim shall come against" 00:09:05.97\00:09:08.26 "him: and therefore he shall be grieved, and return and" 00:09:08.29\00:09:11.12 "have indignation against the holy covenant: so shall he" 00:09:11.15\00:09:14.32 "do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with" 00:09:14.35\00:09:17.48 "them that forsake the holy covenant. " 00:09:17.51\00:09:19.59 Then again you go down to" 00:09:19.62\00:09:21.37 verse 32, "and such as do" 00:09:21.40\00:09:22.96 "wickedly against the" 00:09:22.99\00:09:24.48 "covenant shall he corrupt by" 00:09:24.51\00:09:25.78 "flatteries: but the people" 00:09:25.82\00:09:27.51 "that do know their God shall" 00:09:27.54\00:09:29.00 "be strong, and do exploits. " 00:09:29.03\00:09:30.41 So you have the covenant, the holy covenant, the 00:09:30.45\00:09:32.57 covenant, the covenant, you had mentioned here 00:09:32.61\00:09:34.51 4 or 5 times in the context of Daniel 11. 00:09:34.55\00:09:37.12 Then you have a summation of the people who know their 00:09:37.15\00:09:39.89 God, well here is the purpose, here is the underlying 00:09:39.93\00:09:42.64 goal of the new covenant. 00:09:42.67\00:09:44.42 That is a relationship with God. 00:09:44.46\00:09:46.36 The new covenant is all about bringing us into this 00:09:46.40\00:09:49.36 relationship with God, so we are connecting with Him. 00:09:49.40\00:09:52.33 That is what the book of Daniel is all about. 00:09:52.36\00:09:53.96 You see Daniel 1 through 6 expounding upon the life of 00:09:54.00\00:09:58.31 Daniel and the life of his friends, even through 00:09:58.35\00:10:01.06 Nebuchadnezzar expounding upon this development of 00:10:01.09\00:10:03.84 relationship, this trust relationship with God. 00:10:03.87\00:10:06.55 You see here in Daniel 11 when a summation of the whole 00:10:06.58\00:10:10.09 picture, a prophetic picture is given you see two powers. 00:10:10.12\00:10:13.59 One power is working against the covenant. 00:10:13.62\00:10:15.87 The other power is working to establish the 00:10:15.91\00:10:18.07 holy covenant and the conclusion of this 00:10:18.11\00:10:20.23 is a people who know their God. 00:10:20.27\00:10:22.59 What does it mean that they know their God? 00:10:22.63\00:10:25.62 This is a very significant terminology in Scripture, 00:10:25.66\00:10:28.70 James, because it is not referring to mere intellectual 00:10:28.73\00:10:31.71 knowledge, it is not referring to the idea they have a creed 00:10:31.74\00:10:36.68 memorized, it is not referring to any knowledge that is 00:10:36.71\00:10:40.64 external, or that is formal. 00:10:40.68\00:10:43.77 It's referring to a relationship with God that is very 00:10:43.81\00:10:47.66 intimate, very close and these people that are described 00:10:47.70\00:10:51.52 here are doing great exploits at the end of time. 00:10:51.55\00:10:54.44 These individuals know God in a very personal, 00:10:54.48\00:10:57.34 intimate sense. 00:10:57.37\00:10:58.77 There are few scriptures that come to mind 00:10:58.80\00:11:00.36 that uses this terminology. 00:11:00.40\00:11:01.94 One is where the new covenant is described in 00:11:01.97\00:11:04.83 Chapter 8 of the book of Hebrews 00:11:04.87\00:11:06.97 Where the new covenant involves this promise, 00:11:07.01\00:11:09.84 they shall not teach every man his neighbor's saying 00:11:09.88\00:11:13.89 know the Lord, for all shall know Me from the least 00:11:13.93\00:11:17.91 to the greatest. 00:11:17.95\00:11:18.92 In other words there is not going to be a necessity, 00:11:18.93\00:11:22.49 among these people of evangelizing one another in 00:11:22.53\00:11:26.11 the sense of leading them to know God, because in fact 00:11:26.15\00:11:29.07 they will know God on a personal level 00:11:29.11\00:11:30.48 through the new covenant. 00:11:30.51\00:11:31.66 Also I think of the usage of the word by Jesus in John 00:11:31.70\00:11:35.56 Chapter 17 and verse 3, were Jesus said this is life 00:11:35.59\00:11:39.43 eternal that they might know You the only true God, 00:11:39.47\00:11:43.27 and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. 00:11:43.31\00:11:45.90 Jesus later on in John 17 defines what He means when 00:11:45.93\00:11:50.42 He says, eternal life is to know Him. 00:11:50.46\00:11:52.59 He says in verses 25 and 26 that those who know Him 00:11:52.63\00:11:56.81 are those who partake of the love of the Father and 00:11:56.84\00:12:00.99 the Son in personal relationship. 00:12:01.02\00:12:03.35 So this is an identification of the people of God at 00:12:03.39\00:12:07.87 the end of time doing great exploits as partakers of the 00:12:07.91\00:12:12.32 new covenant and its intimate relationship with God. 00:12:12.36\00:12:15.72 It also seems to be indicate here Ty, there is some 00:12:15.76\00:12:18.90 deception, some flattery, there is a conflict going on 00:12:18.93\00:12:22.23 between these people who know their God and another power 00:12:22.27\00:12:25.54 that claims, professes to be of God. 00:12:25.57\00:12:29.93 Infect Jesus talks about this again in Matthew Chapter 7, 00:12:29.96\00:12:33.55 I think another indication in this prophecy is fulfilled 00:12:33.59\00:12:37.14 here, he says, concerning the end of time Matthew, 00:12:37.18\00:12:40.73 Chapter 7 verse 21, "not every one that saith unto me," 00:12:40.76\00:12:43.89 "Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven;" 00:12:43.93\00:12:47.02 "but he that do with the will of my Father" 00:12:47.05\00:12:49.62 "which is in heaven. " 00:12:49.65\00:12:50.62 Verse 22, "many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord," 00:12:50.63\00:12:54.54 "have we not prophesied in thy name? And in thy name" 00:12:54.58\00:12:58.10 "have cast out devils? And in thy name have done many" 00:12:58.13\00:13:01.37 "wonderful works?" Verse 23, "and then will I profess" 00:13:01.41\00:13:04.61 "unto them, I never knew you; depart from me," 00:13:04.64\00:13:08.65 "ye that work iniquity. " 00:13:08.69\00:13:09.88 This is a sad commentary on people who profess the name 00:13:09.91\00:13:12.89 of Christ, they profess to be Christians, they profess 00:13:12.93\00:13:16.48 to know God, they do many wonderful works in His name, 00:13:16.51\00:13:20.02 but Jesus says they don't know Me. 00:13:20.06\00:13:21.79 Because what? They are workers of iniquity and this is 00:13:21.83\00:13:24.96 why is so vital for us to recognize, and our audience to 00:13:24.99\00:13:28.09 recognize, our viewers to recognize, that the new 00:13:28.13\00:13:31.21 covenant is more than many are teaching it to be 00:13:31.24\00:13:34.29 in these last days. 00:13:34.33\00:13:35.60 The new covenant is inclusive in Hebrews 00:13:35.63\00:13:38.02 Chapter 8 and 10. 00:13:38.06\00:13:40.52 It is inclusive not only in the forgiveness but God 00:13:40.55\00:13:43.10 putting His laws in our hearts and minds so that we 00:13:43.14\00:13:45.65 will not be workers of iniquity. 00:13:45.69\00:13:47.21 So that when we know God and come into a relationship 00:13:47.24\00:13:49.86 with God we will be workers of righteousness and be 00:13:49.89\00:13:52.48 in harmony with His Commandments. 00:13:52.51\00:13:54.03 We will be keeping His law as a law of love to God 00:13:54.06\00:13:56.83 and unto our neighbors. 00:13:56.87\00:13:58.48 Don't go away, we will be right back! 00:13:58.52\00:14:00.22
