Hi friends and welcome to 00:00:20.81\00:00:22.47 Books of the Book! 00:00:22.50\00:00:23.65 We are studying the book of 00:00:23.69\00:00:24.91 Daniel and we are in Daniel 00:00:24.95\00:00:26.14 Chapter 10. 00:00:26.17\00:00:27.31 My name is James Rafferty and I am Ty Gibson 00:00:27.35\00:00:29.95 and thank you for joining us. 00:00:29.99\00:00:31.39 If you can have easy access 00:00:31.42\00:00:32.89 to a Bible open up to chapter 00:00:32.93\00:00:34.36 10 of Daniel. 00:00:34.39\00:00:35.93 James this is a chapter in the book of Daniel 00:00:35.96\00:00:39.94 that is just packed full of information that is 00:00:39.97\00:00:43.91 valuable and beautiful. 00:00:43.94\00:00:45.85 First thing we want to notice here in Daniel Chapter 10, 00:00:45.88\00:00:49.84 is that Daniel has an encounter with none other 00:00:49.88\00:00:54.14 than the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:00:54.17\00:00:56.26 You know is really interesting Ty when you look 00:00:56.29\00:00:58.39 at the Chapter, as a whole, 00:00:58.42\00:01:00.15 you do not see a lot of prophecy in here. 00:01:00.18\00:01:02.05 I remember when I used to study Daniel, 00:01:02.09\00:01:03.92 I used to think Daniel 10, 00:01:03.96\00:01:05.85 there's not a lot in there so I don't really 00:01:05.88\00:01:07.80 need to study that because I am into prophecy and I 00:01:07.84\00:01:10.27 want to understand end time events. 00:01:10.30\00:01:11.57 I want to see the beast, I want to understand what 00:01:11.60\00:01:13.40 they mean, and I would skip over Daniel 10. 00:01:13.44\00:01:16.30 It's like when I was a kid and my mom would say, 00:01:16.34\00:01:18.65 eat your vegetables. 00:01:18.68\00:01:19.83 I wanted to get them out of the way, 00:01:19.86\00:01:22.50 because I didn't like them, 00:01:22.53\00:01:23.50 and get to the good stuff on the plate. 00:01:23.53\00:01:26.17 Potatoes, gravy, and so Daniel 10 was like, 00:01:26.20\00:01:28.80 let's get this out of the way. 00:01:28.83\00:01:31.44 When I was a kid I realized, at lease later on in life, 00:01:31.47\00:01:34.55 that looking back the vegetables were the good stuff. 00:01:34.58\00:01:37.63 The vegetables were what nurtured and grew me, 00:01:37.66\00:01:40.62 made me strong. 00:01:40.66\00:01:41.96 That is the same with Daniel 10, 00:01:42.00\00:01:43.92 Daniel 10 is a the good stuff. 00:01:43.96\00:01:45.81 Why? Because Daniel 10 is where Daniel encounters Christ. 00:01:45.84\00:01:50.75 Daniel 10 is where we see a man in an experience of 00:01:50.79\00:01:54.42 sanctification and we learned what it feels like, 00:01:54.45\00:01:58.05 what you experience in sanctification. 00:01:58.08\00:02:00.49 It is informative to the Christian experience. 00:02:00.53\00:02:03.43 Daniel says in verse 2, he was mourning for 3 full weeks. 00:02:03.47\00:02:07.34 It says that he ate no pleasant food, no meat, no wine 00:02:07.38\00:02:11.21 came into his mouth nor did he anoint himself at all 00:02:11.25\00:02:15.05 till 3 whole weeks were fulfilled. 00:02:15.09\00:02:19.06 Then it opens before him, that Jesus 00:02:19.09\00:02:23.03 appears in glorious form. 00:02:23.06\00:02:25.78 This appearing of Jesus to Daniel is very striking and 00:02:25.81\00:02:31.39 similar to another appearance of Jesus to 00:02:31.43\00:02:34.23 John the Revelator in the book of Revelation. 00:02:34.26\00:02:37.09 First let's read the one here in chapter 10 of Daniel. 00:02:37.13\00:02:40.89 He says in verses 5 and 6, verse 5, "I lifted up my eyes" 00:02:40.93\00:02:44.59 "and looked and behold a certain man clothed in linen," 00:02:44.62\00:02:48.25 it says James, "who's waist was girded with gold," 00:02:48.28\00:02:51.25 then in verse 6, "his body was like beryl," 00:02:51.29\00:02:54.46 "he is face like the appearance of lightning," 00:02:54.49\00:02:57.62 this is important to highlight here. 00:02:57.66\00:02:59.68 "His eyes like torches of fire, his arms and his feet like" 00:02:59.71\00:03:03.76 "burnished or polished brass in color." 00:03:03.79\00:03:06.17 "The sound of his words were like the 00:03:06.21\00:03:08.55 "voice of a multitude." 00:03:08.58\00:03:10.25 What a vision! 00:03:10.29\00:03:11.40 It's incredible Ty, what we're looking at here is we are 00:03:11.44\00:03:14.41 looking at Daniel seeing a man who is identified as clothed 00:03:14.44\00:03:17.38 in linen, it's not Jesus yet in Daniel's mind. 00:03:17.42\00:03:20.57 He is not sure who this being is 00:03:20.60\00:03:22.32 But we know it's Jesus because 00:03:22.35\00:03:24.03 we can see the seven characteristics, 00:03:24.07\00:03:26.18 "the clothed in linen," 00:03:26.21\00:03:27.93 "the fine gold, the beryl," 00:03:27.96\00:03:29.45 "the appearance of lightning," 00:03:29.49\00:03:31.08 "the eyes as lamps of fire, 00:03:31.12\00:03:32.64 "arms and feet like colored polished brass," 00:03:32.68\00:03:35.76 "and the words of the multitude." 00:03:35.79\00:03:36.77 We see all these similar characteristics in the book of 00:03:36.81\00:03:40.49 Revelation, specifically in Revelation chapters 1 and 2. 00:03:40.53\00:03:44.18 In chapter 1 in Revelation beginning right here in 00:03:44.22\00:03:48.22 verse 13, John is in vision on the Lord's Day. 00:03:48.25\00:03:52.19 And he sees one "like the Son of Man, clothed with a" 00:03:52.22\00:03:55.98 "garment down to the foot, and girded about his waist" 00:03:56.01\00:03:59.73 "with a golden girdle." 00:03:59.76\00:04:00.83 "He is head and he is hair were white like wool," 00:04:00.87\00:04:03.59 "as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;" 00:04:03.62\00:04:06.35 "and his feet like brass as if they burned in a furnace;" 00:04:06.38\00:04:09.08 "and his voice is as the sound of many waters." 00:04:09.11\00:04:12.00 And in Revelation 2:18 the same person which is the 00:04:12.03\00:04:14.89 Son of Man, in chapter 1, 00:04:14.92\00:04:16.94 is identified to the church Thyatira. 00:04:16.98\00:04:20.12 "these things saith the Son of God," 00:04:20.16\00:04:23.16 "who has eyes like to a flame of fire," 00:04:23.19\00:04:26.16 "and his feet like fine brass." 00:04:26.19\00:04:27.55 The Son of Man, another phrase for Jesus, 00:04:27.58\00:04:30.12 the Son of God, Jesus Himself, 00:04:30.16\00:04:31.89 it's the same certain person that is clothed in linen 00:04:31.93\00:04:36.40 that appears to Daniel. 00:04:36.43\00:04:37.45 The comparison is very clear. 00:04:37.48\00:04:39.59 It is a very striking comparison 00:04:39.62\00:04:41.69 and identification. 00:04:41.73\00:04:42.89 Jesus is the one who appears to 00:04:42.92\00:04:45.73 Daniel in Daniel Chapter 10. 00:04:45.77\00:04:48.51 What is really powerful about this Ty, 00:04:48.55\00:04:50.76 you see a progression of Daniel's experience with God. 00:04:50.80\00:04:55.57 He begins by purposing in his 00:04:55.60\00:04:58.09 heart, Daniel Chapter 1. 00:04:58.13\00:04:59.47 Then he gets a vision through 00:04:59.51\00:05:01.23 Nebuchadnezzar, which is again given to him 00:05:01.27\00:05:03.71 and he interprets it. 00:05:03.75\00:05:04.82 Then he gets his own visions in Daniel 7 and onward. 00:05:04.85\00:05:08.43 Then Gabriel comes and visits him. 00:05:08.47\00:05:10.62 You see this progression taken place. 00:05:10.66\00:05:12.74 Now you get Daniel Chapter 10, and it is incredible, 00:05:12.77\00:05:16.29 now Jesus Himself, God Himself in the person of 00:05:16.32\00:05:20.26 Jesus Christ comes to visit Daniel. 00:05:20.30\00:05:23.27 Not an Angel, not a dream or a vision, 00:05:23.31\00:05:26.21 not someone else's dream or vision, but God Himself. 00:05:26.25\00:05:28.97 This is amazing and it's obvious that this 00:05:29.00\00:05:31.66 is overwhelming to him. 00:05:31.69\00:05:33.65 The vision of this glorious being in verses 5 and 6 00:05:33.69\00:05:37.53 overcomes Daniel and in verse 7 it says, 00:05:37.56\00:05:39.92 "he was filled with great terror and he fell upon" 00:05:39.96\00:05:43.56 "his hands and knees and upon his face." 00:05:43.59\00:05:46.44 It says in verse 8 "that he is comeliness," 00:05:46.47\00:05:49.25 an old English word for beauty, "was turned in him" 00:05:49.28\00:05:52.91 "into corruption." 00:05:52.95\00:05:54.05 In other words, Daniel began to realize his own 00:05:54.09\00:05:59.60 sinfulness in the presence of this One 00:05:59.64\00:06:03.14 who appears to him, Jesus Christ. 00:06:03.18\00:06:05.75 And Daniel was a man who could stand without fault 00:06:05.79\00:06:07.71 before his enemies. 00:06:07.75\00:06:08.86 Daniel is a man who is blameless before those 00:06:08.90\00:06:12.10 who were seeking to find fault with him. 00:06:12.14\00:06:13.75 Who is seeking to mudslinging in the political world. 00:06:13.78\00:06:16.08 Daniel is exemplifying here friends, 00:06:16.12\00:06:18.58 what sanctification looks like. 00:06:18.62\00:06:20.19 Sanctification, in the follower of Christ, 00:06:20.22\00:06:22.54 does not look like I am holier than you. 00:06:22.57\00:06:24.82 I'm better than you. I'm more righteous than you. 00:06:24.85\00:06:27.64 Sanctification is the appearance of meekness and humility. 00:06:27.68\00:06:31.74 So much so that when you come in contact with Christ, 00:06:31.78\00:06:34.48 the more you see of Christ the less grandeur, 00:06:34.52\00:06:37.24 the less righteousness, 00:06:37.28\00:06:38.69 the less goodness you see in yourself. 00:06:38.72\00:06:40.09 You feel like you have no strength, 00:06:40.12\00:06:41.42 you are not good, you are not righteous, 00:06:41.45\00:06:43.83 and while the other men fled, 00:06:43.87\00:06:45.64 who are with Daniel when this vision comes, 00:06:45.67\00:06:47.33 he himself retains no strength, 00:06:47.37\00:06:49.73 and he falls on his face as though he is dead. 00:06:49.76\00:06:52.76 In the first 9 it says that a deep sleep fell 00:06:52.79\00:06:55.76 upon him, as he laid there upon his face before 00:06:55.80\00:06:58.73 the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:06:58.77\00:07:00.63 Now Ty what is interesting about verse 9 is the 00:07:00.67\00:07:02.83 transition that is taking place. 00:07:02.87\00:07:04.26 He has no strength and it says there in verse 9, 00:07:04.30\00:07:07.69 "yet I heard the voice of his words:" 00:07:07.72\00:07:10.95 "and when I heard the voice of his words," 00:07:10.99\00:07:13.87 "then I was in a deep sleep," 00:07:13.91\00:07:15.95 Jesus says in Matthew 11:28, 00:07:15.99\00:07:17.82 "come unto me all Ye that labor" 00:07:17.86\00:07:19.62 "and are heavy laden and I will give you rest." 00:07:19.66\00:07:22.64 Daniel is terrified, the men are terrified, 00:07:22.68\00:07:25.67 he has no strength, no righteousness and yet 00:07:25.70\00:07:28.99 Jesus, when he speaks, when he speaks to him. 00:07:29.03\00:07:32.25 When God doesn't speak to us, when we don't feel God is 00:07:32.28\00:07:35.55 present with us. 00:07:35.58\00:07:36.61 We don't feel that God is communicating to us, 00:07:36.65\00:07:38.86 we can be overwhelmed with guilt and feel unworthy. 00:07:38.89\00:07:42.30 We can feel separated from God. 00:07:42.33\00:07:43.55 But God assures Daniel that he has His favor. 00:07:43.59\00:07:46.79 He speaks to him. 00:07:46.83\00:07:47.80 If you get in a tiff with your wife, 00:07:47.82\00:07:49.52 I know you never do. 00:07:49.55\00:07:50.52 My wife and I sometimes have what we call 00:07:50.55\00:07:52.33 these intense moments of fellowship. 00:07:52.36\00:07:54.65 When we get in a difference, the words stop. 00:07:54.69\00:07:57.37 There is a lack of communication and that 00:07:57.40\00:08:00.05 does not go well. 00:08:00.08\00:08:01.30 Daniel is in a situation where he is feeling like does 00:08:01.34\00:08:04.11 God love me? Does God except me? 00:08:04.14\00:08:05.98 Is He still there for me? 00:08:06.02\00:08:07.20 When he hears the words he gets the peace of God. 00:08:07.24\00:08:10.29 He comes and feels that God has accepted him. 00:08:10.32\00:08:13.34 He has the rest that Jesus promises us. 00:08:13.38\00:08:15.65 Then the angel Gabriel appears again in verse 10. 00:08:15.69\00:08:20.55 It says, "a hand touched me, which made me tremble" 00:08:20.59\00:08:25.41 "on my knees and on my palms of my hands." 00:08:25.45\00:08:29.71 And notice this James in verse 11, "and he said to me," 00:08:29.74\00:08:33.40 that's Gabriel speaking, "oh Daniel," 00:08:33.44\00:08:35.42 "a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I" 00:08:35.45\00:08:40.24 "speak to you and stand upright: for I have been sent to you." 00:08:40.28\00:08:44.86 And this is, I mean just think about this, he is filled 00:08:44.90\00:08:49.92 with terror, he is overcome, he is on his face, 00:08:49.96\00:08:53.24 and trembling and here's the message that Gabriel gives. 00:08:53.27\00:08:56.69 Gabriel says, Daniel God loves you greatly. 00:08:56.72\00:09:01.36 You are greatly beloved of God. 00:09:01.39\00:09:02.98 Stand on your feet we need to do some communicating here. 00:09:03.01\00:09:06.15 I have appeared not to cause you to tremble, and Jesus 00:09:06.19\00:09:09.26 didn't appear to cause you to tremble, but to assure you are 00:09:09.29\00:09:12.17 deeply loved by God. 00:09:12.20\00:09:15.01 That is the very time we need to be assured of God's love. 00:09:15.04\00:09:17.47 Friends, there are times in our lives when we feel like 00:09:17.50\00:09:20.42 we are no good, we are worthless, we have nothing in us 00:09:20.46\00:09:23.35 that commends us to God. 00:09:23.38\00:09:24.48 That is the very time that we need to know 00:09:24.51\00:09:26.32 that God loves us. 00:09:26.36\00:09:27.33 Because when God communicates that He loves in that time, 00:09:27.34\00:09:30.79 it is based on who He is and not based on who we are. 00:09:30.82\00:09:33.83 It is based upon His goodness, His righteousness, 00:09:33.86\00:09:36.83 not our goodness or our righteousness. 00:09:36.87\00:09:38.75 So this speaks powerful truths to those of us who are 00:09:38.78\00:09:42.90 followers of the Lord because as we progress in our 00:09:42.94\00:09:46.81 Christian experience we can begin to think that 00:09:46.85\00:09:50.65 we are accepted of God because of how good or holier, 00:09:50.69\00:09:55.36 righteous or obedient we have become in our 00:09:55.40\00:09:58.39 Christian experience. 00:09:58.42\00:09:59.46 Daniel is sharing with us right here in Daniel 10 00:09:59.50\00:10:02.30 that it is still not based on our goodness, 00:10:02.33\00:10:04.33 it's based on God's love to us. 00:10:04.37\00:10:06.20 Man, he stands up James, and we go at the latter part 00:10:06.23\00:10:10.61 of verse 11 and he is still trembling. 00:10:10.65\00:10:12.38 Gabriel told him, you are greatly beloved, stand up 00:10:12.41\00:10:16.47 you do not need to be terrified, stand before me, 00:10:16.51\00:10:20.53 I need to share with you now concerning 00:10:20.57\00:10:23.10 the vision that you had. 00:10:23.13\00:10:24.46 He says to him, don't be afraid, in verse 12. 00:10:24.50\00:10:28.77 He has to keep assuring Daniel. 00:10:28.81\00:10:31.08 Daniel doesn't become nonchalant in Gabriel's presence 00:10:31.11\00:10:34.34 He doesn't take on an attitude of ill-reverence he is 00:10:34.38\00:10:37.57 still trembling and yet the angel is trying 00:10:37.61\00:10:39.86 to assure him. 00:10:39.89\00:10:41.04 I don't know if this is true or not James, 00:10:41.08\00:10:42.40 because I haven't taken the time to count these in 00:10:42.44\00:10:45.14 Scripture, but in verse 12 where it says fear not, 00:10:45.17\00:10:48.14 or do not fear, someone has said that this is the 00:10:48.17\00:10:51.10 most often repeated phrase in Scripture. 00:10:51.13\00:10:54.86 Every time a human being has an encounter with God, 00:10:54.89\00:10:57.60 or an angel sent from God, the message is 00:10:57.64\00:10:59.82 don't be afraid, fear not. 00:10:59.86\00:11:02.83 That is an appropriate message because God wants to assure 00:11:02.87\00:11:05.97 us in His presence, He wants to communicate with us. 00:11:06.00\00:11:09.77 You see that repeated whenever an angel visits or comes, 00:11:09.81\00:11:13.54 because the brightness and 00:11:13.57\00:11:15.48 the glory and the goodness and 00:11:15.51\00:11:17.38 the love of God contrasts 00:11:17.41\00:11:18.93 with who we are with our 00:11:18.97\00:11:20.42 unrighteousness, with our lack of goodness, 00:11:20.45\00:11:22.41 does cause fear, a natural fear. 00:11:22.44\00:11:24.74 I have never had such an encounter, 00:11:24.78\00:11:27.04 but I know that just in 00:11:27.08\00:11:29.07 searching the Scriptures 00:11:29.11\00:11:31.41 and having encounters heart 00:11:31.45\00:11:33.68 to heart with the Savior and learning about God sometimes 00:11:33.72\00:11:38.77 has just bowed me down with a sense of unworthiness. 00:11:38.80\00:11:42.12 Not because God is pressing a sense of unworthiness 00:11:42.16\00:11:45.44 upon me, but because God is holy. 00:11:45.48\00:11:47.88 God is good, God is righteous, God is love and 00:11:47.92\00:11:52.09 everything that I see in Him causes me to see in 00:11:52.12\00:11:55.05 myself those things that are out of harmony with Him. 00:11:55.09\00:11:58.24 He does not leave me there, He wants to lift me up so 00:11:58.28\00:12:01.40 that I had the privilege of becoming more 00:12:01.44\00:12:03.15 and more like Him in character 00:12:03.19\00:12:05.97 so that the contrast becomes less distinct. 00:12:06.00\00:12:08.72 Absolutely so in that sense every one of us has had that 00:12:08.76\00:12:11.68 encounter who have pursued after God and sought to follow God. 00:12:11.72\00:12:15.06 We all have encountered Him in such a way that causes 00:12:15.10\00:12:18.20 us to tremble unto fear. 00:12:18.24\00:12:19.56 We all need this message, fear not. 00:12:19.59\00:12:22.07 It is a beautiful message as we tremble before the Lord. 00:12:22.10\00:12:25.19 It is a beautiful assurance to us that we need 00:12:25.22\00:12:27.62 over and over again. 00:12:27.66\00:12:28.71 As we move on here look at how Daniel gradually gains 00:12:28.75\00:12:34.07 more strength and more courage. 00:12:34.11\00:12:35.45 He first of all is trembling and then 00:12:35.49\00:12:37.97 falls into a sleep. 00:12:38.01\00:12:39.08 He's resting Christ and then there are the words 00:12:39.11\00:12:42.34 that bring that experience, that rest to Him 00:12:42.37\00:12:44.57 the words he hears spoken. 00:12:44.61\00:12:45.72 He awakens and is touched that caused him to get to his 00:12:45.75\00:12:49.58 hands and knees and then he is touched again and he 00:12:49.62\00:12:53.41 stands upon his feet still trembling. 00:12:53.44\00:12:55.73 You see a progression here that is taking place. 00:12:55.77\00:12:58.06 Friends we cannot make one move toward God. 00:12:58.09\00:13:01.13 We cannot stand in His presence. 00:13:01.16\00:13:03.45 We can't even bow in His presence. 00:13:03.49\00:13:05.70 We cannot rise to our feet, we cannot move toward Him 00:13:05.74\00:13:09.30 without His divine intervention. 00:13:09.33\00:13:12.17 Without Him coming to us. 00:13:12.20\00:13:13.67 Without Him touching us and without Him speaking to us, 00:13:13.71\00:13:15.91 there is no goodness or righteousness in us. 00:13:15.95\00:13:18.68 God is consistently reassuring us that He loves us 00:13:18.71\00:13:22.27 and in that He is pursuing us. 00:13:22.31\00:13:26.61 It is the divine initiative of God toward us 00:13:26.65\00:13:30.26 that draws us to Him. 00:13:30.29\00:13:31.66 Jesus said this, He said in John chapter 12:32. 00:13:31.69\00:13:36.52 "If I be lifted up, I will draw all men unto me." 00:13:36.55\00:13:41.31 That is God's plan, that is what God is seeking to do. 00:13:41.34\00:13:44.72 Here the book of Daniel chapter 10 we see God working 00:13:44.75\00:13:48.09 to draw each one of us unto Himself. 00:13:48.13\00:13:50.62 Now we have a huge insight into this controversy that is 00:13:50.66\00:13:56.08 coming up in Daniel chapter 10, so don't go away. 00:13:56.11\00:13:58.29 Because we are going to be right back! 00:13:58.33\00:14:00.59
