Welcome back friends to our study of Daniel Chapter 9. 00:00:01.98\00:00:04.30 James now we have come to the time portion of the prophecy 00:00:04.34\00:00:07.75 where we pointed out that Daniel himself was sick 00:00:07.78\00:00:10.88 for a number of days. 00:00:10.91\00:00:12.92 He was just astonished and 00:00:12.96\00:00:15.04 amazed by the vision. 00:00:15.07\00:00:16.86 He didn't understand it, we see that he humbled himself 00:00:16.90\00:00:20.38 before the Lord and identified with the sin of his people 00:00:20.41\00:00:23.86 rather than feeling arrogant and above them. 00:00:23.90\00:00:26.27 That state of mind prepared him to receive the answer to 00:00:26.31\00:00:31.15 his prayer, Gabriel comes now to explain the vision and 00:00:31.18\00:00:35.99 begins to break it down point by point, 00:00:36.03\00:00:39.41 he explains the time prophecy. 00:00:39.45\00:00:41.13 The key element here to this 00:00:41.16\00:00:43.01 time prophecy is in verse 25. 00:00:43.04\00:00:44.88 "Know therefore and understand" 00:00:44.91\00:00:46.30 "from the going forth of the" 00:00:46.33\00:00:47.69 "Commandment to restore and to" 00:00:47.73\00:00:49.01 "build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince. " 00:00:49.05\00:00:50.98 That word Messiah means the Anointed One. 00:00:51.02\00:00:54.12 When you go to the New Testament there are two key verses, 00:00:54.15\00:00:57.86 one of them is in Luke chapter 1, and the other one is in 00:00:57.89\00:01:01.57 Luke chapter 3. 00:01:01.60\00:01:03.00 One is in Luke chapter 3, and 1 is in Luke chapter 1. 00:01:03.04\00:01:08.22 Or excuse me chapter 2. 00:01:08.25\00:01:10.05 The one in Luke 2 verse 1 it directs us to the time 00:01:10.08\00:01:14.05 when Jesus was born. 00:01:14.09\00:01:15.06 It says here, "it came to pass in those days that there" 00:01:15.07\00:01:17.50 "went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that" 00:01:17.54\00:01:20.70 "all the world should be taxed. " 00:01:20.74\00:01:22.39 This gives us a time frame for the birth of Jesus Christ. 00:01:22.43\00:01:26.50 It was the time frame of Caesar Augustus. 00:01:26.54\00:01:29.15 Shortly after Caesar's death we have another ruler in Rome. 00:01:29.18\00:01:35.35 In Luke chapter 3, now Luke, when he wrote the gospel, 00:01:35.38\00:01:38.26 Luke was more of a historian. 00:01:38.29\00:01:39.77 This is why he makes reference to the Caesar's, the rulers in 00:01:39.80\00:01:44.55 the kingdom when Jesus was born. 00:01:44.58\00:01:46.77 In this case in Luke chapter 3, Jesus was baptized. 00:01:46.81\00:01:50.97 It says here in Luke 3 verse 1, "now in the 15th year 00:01:51.00\00:01:54.93 of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being" 00:01:54.97\00:01:58.86 "governor," and so on. 00:01:58.90\00:01:59.87 In that year, the 15th year of the reign of 00:01:59.89\00:02:02.41 Tiberius Caesar, which is by the way a historical date 00:02:02.45\00:02:06.91 that you can find anywhere and verify anywhere. 00:02:06.94\00:02:10.28 You read in this context that in verse 21, 00:02:10.32\00:02:13.56 "all the people were being baptized by John the Baptist. " 00:02:13.59\00:02:17.27 "That Jesus also being baptized and praying, that heaven" 00:02:17.31\00:02:20.91 "was opened, and the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily" 00:02:20.95\00:02:24.52 "shape, like a dove upon him. " 00:02:24.56\00:02:25.95 This is the anointing, the Messiah confirmation, 00:02:25.98\00:02:30.07 or the fulfillment of that prophecy. 00:02:30.11\00:02:32.89 He is being anointed and a voice from heaven comes and 00:02:32.92\00:02:35.71 says, "this is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased. " 00:02:35.75\00:02:38.51 And it says in verse 23, "and Jesus himself began to be 00:02:38.55\00:02:41.28 about 30 years of age. " 00:02:41.32\00:02:44.05 So Jesus is 30 when He is anointed. 00:02:44.09\00:02:46.81 This is 27 A.D. when He was anointed. 00:02:46.85\00:02:49.50 That was 483 Years, that is what the prophecy said, 00:02:49.54\00:02:51.90 69 weeks. 00:02:51.93\00:02:53.15 If you take 27 from 483 you go all the way 00:02:53.19\00:02:56.15 back down to 457. 00:02:56.19\00:02:57.65 So for 457 would be the beginning date that is referred 00:02:57.68\00:03:02.28 to in chapter 9 of Daniel verse 25, "know therefore and 00:03:02.32\00:03:05.85 "understand that the going forth from the Commandment" 00:03:05.89\00:03:09.39 "to rebuild and restore Jerusalem until- - -." 00:03:09.43\00:03:13.54 "Messiah the Prince will be. " 00:03:13.58\00:03:15.54 So very clearly here we have 457 B.C. reaching forward to 00:03:15.57\00:03:21.24 27 which is the year in which Jesus was anointed as the 00:03:21.27\00:03:25.33 Messiah for Ministry, He began His public ministry. 00:03:25.36\00:03:29.38 Exactly, exactly! It is all biblical. 00:03:29.42\00:03:31.06 Luke 2, Luke 3, right here in the confirmation of this 00:03:31.09\00:03:35.15 prophecy, now when you go from that point onward, 00:03:35.18\00:03:38.20 you find another week in verse 26. 00:03:38.24\00:03:41.32 "After three score in two weeks," which is inconclusive 00:03:41.35\00:03:43.93 in the seven weeks, "Messiah shall be cut off. " 00:03:43.96\00:03:46.20 "But not for Himself," now, can about the baptism Ty. 00:03:46.24\00:03:49.22 That phrase cut off is not referring to His being 00:03:49.26\00:03:52.21 anointed by the Holy Spirit. 00:03:52.24\00:03:53.59 This phrase is talking about something entirely different. 00:03:53.62\00:03:56.25 I think this is probably the most crucial verse of 00:03:56.28\00:04:00.55 the book Daniel because it refers to none other than 00:04:00.59\00:04:04.82 the cross of Jesus Christ. 00:04:04.86\00:04:07.11 When it says the 00:04:07.14\00:04:08.11 Messiah shall be cut off, 00:04:08.12\00:04:09.34 I think is incredibility 00:04:09.38\00:04:11.01 insightful and beautiful. 00:04:11.05\00:04:12.61 The prophecy then says, "but not for himself. " 00:04:12.65\00:04:16.84 If not for Himself then for who? 00:04:16.88\00:04:18.84 The obvious answer is that Jesus was cut off, 00:04:18.88\00:04:21.96 that is crucified. 00:04:22.00\00:04:23.19 He gave His life, a sacrifice for sin, not for Himself 00:04:23.22\00:04:26.95 but for us, this highlights the self-sacrificing, 00:04:26.99\00:04:30.28 other centered, self giving love of Jesus 00:04:30.32\00:04:33.88 manifested at the cross. 00:04:33.91\00:04:35.09 I can't keep quiet. 00:04:35.12\00:04:36.23 While you're saying all these things, you understand, 00:04:36.26\00:04:37.52 I keep quiet any other time. 00:04:37.56\00:04:39.58 This is the corner Stone, 00:04:39.62\00:04:41.57 the foundation stone of Christianity. 00:04:41.61\00:04:44.59 This is the truth about all of the truths. 00:04:44.63\00:04:46.57 He was cut off but not for Himself. 00:04:46.61\00:04:47.80 You know it is amazing that you could summarize the whole 00:04:47.83\00:04:50.38 plan of salvation in that simple phrase. 00:04:50.42\00:04:53.16 This is speaking of Jesus Christ finishing transgression, 00:04:53.19\00:04:56.38 making and end to sin, making reconciliation for iniquity, 00:04:56.42\00:04:59.57 everlasting righteousness, sealing up the prophecies, 00:04:59.61\00:05:02.18 sealing up the vision, 00:05:02.22\00:05:03.19 and preparing to anoint the most holy Place. 00:05:03.20\00:05:05.20 Very similar language used in Hebrew 9:26 where it says 00:05:05.23\00:05:08.62 that He, the Messiah, Jesus, will appear once at the end 00:05:08.66\00:05:12.02 of the ages to do away with sin, to put away sin, 00:05:12.05\00:05:15.62 by the sacrifice of Himself. 00:05:15.66\00:05:18.87 Again here we see this idea that the Messiah is crucified, 00:05:18.91\00:05:22.29 but not for Himself. 00:05:22.32\00:05:23.51 He gives Himself a sacrifice for sin. 00:05:23.55\00:05:26.87 What verse is that again? 00:05:26.91\00:05:28.69 Hebrews 9:26, Hebrews 9:26! 00:05:28.73\00:05:30.45 So in that context, that New Testament context, 00:05:30.48\00:05:33.32 you have again a confirmation of what is taking place here. 00:05:33.36\00:05:36.64 Now notice when this takes place, in verse 27, again going 00:05:36.68\00:05:39.93 back to a prophecy about the Messiah. 00:05:39.96\00:05:42.04 It says "he will confirm the covenant with many for 1 week" 00:05:42.08\00:05:46.14 "and in the midst of the week" the middle of the week. 00:05:46.18\00:05:48.49 "He will cause the sacrifice oblation to cease. " 00:05:48.53\00:05:51.17 It's the same thing all over again. 00:05:51.20\00:05:52.71 It is telling us that when Jesus is crucified, 00:05:52.75\00:05:56.87 the sacrificial services that had been going on for 00:05:56.90\00:06:00.32 centuries, in Hebrew history, 00:06:00.35\00:06:02.57 will be brought to a conclusion. 00:06:02.61\00:06:04.79 Brought to an end, Why? 00:06:04.83\00:06:05.87 Because Jesus is the fulfillment of all those typical 00:06:05.90\00:06:09.96 or symbolic sacrifices. 00:06:09.99\00:06:12.36 That is exactly what happened when He was on the cross. 00:06:12.39\00:06:14.97 Friends, that temple, the curtain of the temple was rent 00:06:15.00\00:06:17.54 in two from top to bottom. 00:06:17.58\00:06:19.44 It was a thick curtain. 00:06:19.47\00:06:21.37 It was rent in two and that 00:06:21.41\00:06:23.24 whole system of sacrifice came 00:06:23.27\00:06:25.33 to and end and it was fulfilled by Jesus. 00:06:25.36\00:06:26.99 Why in the midst of the week? 00:06:27.02\00:06:28.76 Because when you look at the 70 weeks, only 69 of them 00:06:28.79\00:06:32.56 had been fulfilled so far. 00:06:32.60\00:06:33.63 There is still one left, that last seven week period is 00:06:33.66\00:06:36.90 still to be fulfilled in the context of the life of Jesus. 00:06:36.94\00:06:40.05 He is anointed at the beginning of the last seven weeks, 00:06:40.09\00:06:43.61 27 A.D., and in the middle of that week, 31 A.D. He dies 00:06:43.65\00:06:46.64 on the cross for our sins and the sacrificial system 00:06:46.67\00:06:49.62 comes to an end. 00:06:49.66\00:06:50.63 At the end of that last week, that 70th week, A.D. 34, 00:06:50.64\00:06:55.11 the gospel goes to the Gentile world. 00:06:55.15\00:06:57.85 The language in verse 27 of 00:06:57.89\00:07:00.15 Daniel 9 James, it says that, 00:07:00.18\00:07:01.75 "He," that is the Messiah, 00:07:01.79\00:07:03.89 "shall confirm the covenant. " 00:07:03.93\00:07:06.00 This is crucial. 00:07:06.04\00:07:07.01 This is referring to the new covenant. 00:07:07.03\00:07:09.57 Jesus came to our world to fulfill, to confirm, to ratify, 00:07:09.61\00:07:16.23 to accomplish the new covenant. 00:07:16.27\00:07:18.47 Which refers back to verse 24. 00:07:18.51\00:07:20.64 The 7 points of Daniel chapter 9 verse 24, those seven points 00:07:20.68\00:07:25.89 to finish transgression, make an end of the sin, make 00:07:25.92\00:07:28.75 a reconciliation for the people, bring in everlasting 00:07:28.79\00:07:31.62 righteousness, seal up the vision, seal up the prophecy, 00:07:31.66\00:07:34.46 and anoint the Most Holy. 00:07:34.49\00:07:35.52 All of those delineated items are brought together under 00:07:35.56\00:07:40.51 this one heading, confirm the covenant. 00:07:40.54\00:07:43.00 The new covenant is fulfilled to completely accomplish in 00:07:43.03\00:07:47.75 the person of Jesus Christ as He comes to the middle 00:07:47.79\00:07:51.49 of the 70th week and is crucified. 00:07:51.52\00:07:53.88 Praise God! This is why this prophecy is the most powerful 00:07:53.92\00:07:56.87 prophecy that you could find in the book of Daniel, 00:07:56.90\00:07:59.78 probably in the whole Bible. 00:07:59.82\00:08:01.32 This brings together and summarizes the whole plan 00:08:01.35\00:08:04.19 of salvation and directs our minds and our hearts and our 00:08:04.22\00:08:07.52 hope completely and entirely to Jesus Christ and what He 00:08:07.55\00:08:10.81 would accomplish within the 70 week period. 00:08:10.85\00:08:13.19 Amen, and it is just fabulous. 00:08:13.23\00:08:14.89 I want to also look at the words we have already mentioned 00:08:14.92\00:08:19.97 and read here, "that the Messiah shall be cut off. " 00:08:20.00\00:08:22.30 I want to mention something about this James. 00:08:22.33\00:08:24.12 I think as Bible students we need to understand what the 00:08:24.15\00:08:29.21 words mean that we are reading, 00:08:29.25\00:08:30.99 and what their historic background is. 00:08:31.02\00:08:32.38 As I looked into this and studied it James, I found out 00:08:32.41\00:08:35.89 that the words "cut off" will be cut off which we identify 00:08:35.93\00:08:39.37 as referring to His crucifixion. 00:08:39.41\00:08:40.82 Those words "cut off" are used frequently in Scripture 00:08:40.85\00:08:44.81 and they refer all the way back to an experience that was 00:08:44.85\00:08:48.78 had by Abraham in Genesis 15. 00:08:48.81\00:08:52.15 In Genesis 15 Abraham received a vision and he was told 00:08:52.18\00:08:55.85 in this vision to take sacrificial animals and 00:08:55.88\00:08:59.73 to sever them in two. 00:08:59.76\00:09:00.96 To cut them in half and to pattern these animals on the 00:09:01.00\00:09:05.11 ground, each half across from the other forming 00:09:05.14\00:09:08.71 a path, as he did that, 00:09:08.74\00:09:10.58 the vision continued and Abraham saw the Lord in the form 00:09:10.62\00:09:15.44 of a pillar of fire pass through those pieces as they 00:09:15.47\00:09:20.26 were cut off, as they were cut in half. 00:09:20.29\00:09:22.25 The Lord passed through to confirm the covenant. 00:09:22.29\00:09:25.80 This is incredible because it indicates, at this early 00:09:25.83\00:09:28.76 stage of salvation in history, in this vision to Abraham 00:09:28.80\00:09:32.42 that in order to save the human race that the Godhead 00:09:32.46\00:09:36.22 Itself would have to undergo an excruciating, horrible 00:09:36.26\00:09:39.99 agony of separation within the Godhead. 00:09:40.03\00:09:42.55 In fact, the son of God would have to be separated from 00:09:42.58\00:09:47.19 the Father and the Holy Spirit. 00:09:47.23\00:09:48.89 Their fellowship would be severed, but this incredible 00:09:48.93\00:09:53.24 sacrifice, not for Himself, but for you and I and the 00:09:53.27\00:09:57.55 whole human race. 00:09:57.58\00:09:58.63 It would be a sacrifice of separation between Father, 00:09:58.67\00:10:02.36 Son, and Holy Spirit, what an incredible manifestation 00:10:02.39\00:10:06.05 of self giving love on our behalf. 00:10:06.08\00:10:08.56 Amen, now this prophecy deals with the Messiah and what 00:10:08.60\00:10:11.49 He was to accomplish, but it also deals with the temple. 00:10:11.52\00:10:14.29 It's rebuilding, in which Jeremiah was very interested in, 00:10:14.33\00:10:17.06 and its final destruction in 70 A.D. 00:10:17.10\00:10:19.94 Jesus actually quotes in Matthew chapters 23 and 24. 00:10:19.98\00:10:24.06 He actually quotes, or references to the book of Daniel 00:10:24.09\00:10:28.14 in reference to this very prophecy. 00:10:28.18\00:10:29.86 He says in Matthew 24:15, "and when you shall see therefore 00:10:29.89\00:10:34.99 the abomination of desolation spoken of by Daniel, 00:10:35.02\00:10:38.55 the prophet, stand in the holy place, whoso reads, 00:10:38.59\00:10:42.08 let him understand. 00:10:42.12\00:10:43.73 Jesus was wanting us to understand this prophecy. 00:10:43.77\00:10:45.76 He is understanding or recognizing that this 00:10:45.80\00:10:48.80 abomination of desolation is also spoken of 00:10:48.83\00:10:51.80 in the context of this prophecy. 00:10:51.83\00:10:53.54 You see after Jesus fulfilled a sacrificial offerings and 00:10:53.57\00:10:56.95 the temple curtain was rent in two, the temple was no more 00:10:56.99\00:11:00.33 to be the direct ways of mediation for sins. 00:11:00.37\00:11:05.42 Jesus in heavenly sanctuary, the holy place and being 00:11:05.46\00:11:08.53 anointed now was to be our Mediator. 00:11:08.56\00:11:10.25 After that this temple was going to be destroyed. 00:11:10.28\00:11:12.84 Jesus even told us of this in the context of Matthew 24. 00:11:12.87\00:11:16.40 He said that not one stone would be left on another 00:11:16.44\00:11:19.10 that would not be thrown down. 00:11:19.13\00:11:20.41 So what Jesus is saying here is that you need to understand 00:11:20.44\00:11:23.11 about this abomination of desolation, Why? 00:11:23.14\00:11:26.05 Because according to Matthew 24, 3 times Jesus warns of 00:11:26.08\00:11:30.03 false prophets and the end of time who had a false 00:11:30.06\00:11:32.95 interpretation of these very prophecies. 00:11:32.98\00:11:34.92 That is what is happening right now friends. 00:11:34.95\00:11:36.82 Jesus tells us in no uncertain terms in Matthew 23:37, 00:11:36.86\00:11:40.63 "Oh Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets," 00:11:40.66\00:11:44.17 "and stones them which are said unto thee, how often" 00:11:44.20\00:11:47.68 "I would I have gathered thy children together", 00:11:47.71\00:11:49.46 "even as a hen gathered her chickens under her wings," 00:11:49.50\00:11:52.63 "but ye would not!" 00:11:52.67\00:11:53.64 "Behold your house is left into desolate," verse 38. 00:11:53.65\00:11:56.96 "For I say unto you, ye shall not see me henceforth," 00:11:57.00\00:12:00.40 "till ye say Blessed Is He That Cometh 00:12:00.44\00:12:02.86 In The Name Of The Lord. " 00:12:02.89\00:12:04.32 Until the end of time, until Jesus returns the temple 00:12:04.36\00:12:07.56 in Jerusalem was to be left desolate and our eyes would 00:12:07.60\00:12:10.77 be directed to the heavenly sanctuary. 00:12:10.81\00:12:12.33 These words that you have shared here James, 00:12:12.37\00:12:14.78 from Matthew 23 and 24, are directly, and as you mentioned, 00:12:14.81\00:12:18.97 refer back to Daniel 9:27 in the latter part that says, 00:12:19.01\00:12:22.78 "on the wings of abominations shall be one who makes" 00:12:22.82\00:12:26.53 "desolate," the language Jesus used referring to this verse. 00:12:26.56\00:12:29.86 "Even until the consummation," that is the conclusion of 00:12:29.90\00:12:33.35 human history in the second coming of Jesus. 00:12:33.39\00:12:35.17 "Which is determined and is poured out upon the desolate" 00:12:35.20\00:12:39.38 the final judgment of this desolating power that is 00:12:39.41\00:12:43.48 brought to view in the book of Daniel. 00:12:43.51\00:12:45.14 Absolutely, so there you have it friends. 00:12:45.17\00:12:46.73 What we see here is a two fold prophecy, the temple 00:12:46.76\00:12:50.24 and the Messiah and it is our hope that you will recognize 00:12:50.27\00:12:53.83 that this prophecy points us to Jesus Christ as the one 00:12:53.86\00:12:57.38 time sacrifice for all sins. 00:12:57.41\00:12:58.96 Amen! 00:12:58.99\00:13:00.94
