Welcome friends to Books 00:00:22.13\00:00:23.57 of the Book. 00:00:23.60\00:00:24.57 We have embarked upon an 00:00:24.58\00:00:25.64 exciting study of the book 00:00:25.67\00:00:26.82 of Daniel and we have now come to Daniel Chapter 7. 00:00:26.85\00:00:29.73 I'm Ty Gibson and I'm James Rafferty and we are in 00:00:29.77\00:00:32.62 an incredible Chapter Ty. 00:00:32.65\00:00:34.51 I have to say that this 00:00:34.54\00:00:36.41 Chapter is one you approach 00:00:36.45\00:00:38.08 with fear and trepidation. 00:00:38.11\00:00:39.67 There is so much here, a lot 00:00:39.70\00:00:41.61 of symbolism and it is going 00:00:41.64\00:00:43.48 to be quite an adventure to move through this. 00:00:43.51\00:00:46.10 It is a dream and it is symbolic 00:00:46.13\00:00:47.95 The symbols are identified partly in the context of the 00:00:47.98\00:00:51.66 Chapter, so we need to get right into it. 00:00:51.70\00:00:54.21 So far the book of Daniel, he hasn't received any visions 00:00:54.25\00:00:59.27 or dreams himself. 00:00:59.30\00:01:00.62 Nebuchadnezzar had received two dreams that had been 00:01:00.66\00:01:03.25 interpreted by Daniel. 00:01:03.28\00:01:04.92 But now in Chapter 7 Daniel in verse 1 says, he received 00:01:04.95\00:01:10.25 a dream and a vision and proceeds to tell the main facts, 00:01:10.29\00:01:15.55 or main points of this vision that he received. 00:01:15.59\00:01:19.54 As the vision unfolds, he says that he saw 4 winds 00:01:19.58\00:01:23.50 stirring, or striving upon the great sea. 00:01:23.53\00:01:26.88 He said that he saw 4 great beasts in verse 3, come up 00:01:26.92\00:01:31.45 out of the sea and each of the beasts was different from 00:01:31.48\00:01:35.72 the other and then delineates these beasts in particular, 00:01:35.76\00:01:40.06 James, he says in verse 4, the first beast was like a lion, 00:01:40.09\00:01:44.36 and with eagle's wings. 00:01:44.39\00:01:45.63 Then down in verse 5 he says, he saw a bear, raised up on 00:01:45.66\00:01:50.61 one side with three ribs in its mouth. 00:01:50.65\00:01:52.20 Then he says in verse 6 then he saw a leopard and the 00:01:52.24\00:01:56.49 leopard had four wings on its back and 4 heads and then 00:01:56.53\00:02:01.26 he sees in verse 7, a fourth beast, which is not like 00:02:01.30\00:02:05.64 any of the others, it is not like anything in the animal 00:02:05.68\00:02:09.91 kingdom, he says it is dreadful and terrible, exceedingly 00:02:09.94\00:02:14.79 strong, with huge iron teeth and it was different from 00:02:14.82\00:02:19.65 all the other beasts. 00:02:19.69\00:02:21.41 So these are the four creatures that he sees. 00:02:21.44\00:02:25.19 They represent 4 kingdoms that move through 00:02:25.23\00:02:28.94 history in succession. 00:02:28.98\00:02:30.79 The lion represents Babylon. 00:02:30.82\00:02:32.66 The bear, Media Persia. 00:02:32.70\00:02:35.07 The leopard, the kingdom of Grecia. 00:02:35.11\00:02:37.42 And then the terrible dreadful beast, the non-descript 00:02:37.45\00:02:41.73 beast represents the Roman empire. 00:02:41.77\00:02:45.20 So that is the basic outline of the symbols that he sees 00:02:45.24\00:02:48.72 in his vision, and the beast and what they represent. 00:02:48.75\00:02:52.27 We know this Ty because in a very context of the prophecy 00:02:52.30\00:02:55.78 an interpretation is given Daniel. 00:02:55.82\00:02:58.17 In verse 16, Daniel comes near to one of the people 00:02:58.21\00:03:02.66 he sees in vision and he asks him about this vision. 00:03:02.70\00:03:06.84 This being, this heavenly being tells Daniel the truth, 00:03:06.88\00:03:10.99 and the interpretation of these things. 00:03:11.02\00:03:12.84 Then in verse 17 he says, these great beasts, this is the 00:03:12.87\00:03:16.33 Angel, the messenger, speaking to Daniel, to tell him the 00:03:16.36\00:03:19.78 truth of the interpretation of these things. 00:03:19.82\00:03:21.50 He says these great beasts, which are 4, are 4 kings 00:03:21.53\00:03:26.02 which shall arise out of the earth. 00:03:26.05\00:03:28.91 So right there you have a very clear interpretation. 00:03:28.95\00:03:32.29 These beasts actually represent Kings and kingdoms. 00:03:32.33\00:03:35.38 In fact, the Bible here, even though it is talking and 00:03:35.42\00:03:38.09 symbolic language, it is talking the same language that 00:03:38.12\00:03:40.75 we use today, in our world. 00:03:40.79\00:03:42.25 For example, we use beasts to represent countries, 00:03:42.29\00:03:45.69 or kingdoms, or Kings. 00:03:45.72\00:03:47.08 If you think for example, of an eagle. 00:03:47.12\00:03:49.56 What country do you think of? America of course. 00:03:49.59\00:03:51.49 If you think of a bear? Russia! 00:03:51.52\00:03:53.13 The lion? England! 00:03:53.16\00:03:55.37 The Dragon? China! 00:03:55.40\00:03:57.54 So God is using the very language that He saw we would 00:03:57.57\00:04:00.35 use as a people, He is not trying to confuse us here. 00:04:00.39\00:04:03.14 But He is talking in symbols for reason. 00:04:03.17\00:04:06.02 That reason is going to become evident later. 00:04:06.06\00:04:08.48 Right now the main thing we need to recognize, for our 00:04:08.52\00:04:11.14 viewers sake, is that these 4 beasts are kingdoms that have 00:04:11.17\00:04:14.73 risen in the earth and take us down the stream of time. 00:04:14.77\00:04:18.31 It is fascinating to notice that all of these kingdoms 00:04:18.34\00:04:21.67 are represented by 00:04:21.71\00:04:23.56 predatory beasts. 00:04:23.59\00:04:25.38 These are powerful animals 00:04:25.41\00:04:28.35 that are symbolizing powers 00:04:28.39\00:04:31.02 in human history that used 00:04:31.06\00:04:33.36 force, that used coercion, 00:04:33.39\00:04:35.62 that depend on military power and might in order to advance 00:04:35.66\00:04:40.20 themselves, by contrast, just for interest sake if we fast 00:04:40.24\00:04:44.53 forward to God's kingdom as it is represented in Scripture, 00:04:44.56\00:04:48.81 we discover that God chooses for His symbol, a lamb. 00:04:48.85\00:04:52.93 A lamb represents the kingdom of God. 00:04:52.97\00:04:56.70 A docile, meek and humble animal that is led to the 00:04:56.74\00:05:00.45 slaughter, God does not use the same principles 00:05:00.49\00:05:04.17 that human powers use. 00:05:04.20\00:05:06.93 God is not engaged in force and manipulation in order to 00:05:06.97\00:05:11.94 bring people to their knees and worship before Him. 00:05:11.98\00:05:14.71 But we see in the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ. 00:05:14.74\00:05:18.25 We see in the cross of Christ, we see the power that God 00:05:18.29\00:05:22.20 depends on and that is the power of truth and love. 00:05:22.23\00:05:25.65 That is a really good point Ty, in fact it is so powerful 00:05:25.69\00:05:28.76 when you look at that because the Lamb, of course being the 00:05:28.79\00:05:31.83 sacrificial beast of the Old 00:05:31.86\00:05:33.14 Testament, the sanctuary 00:05:33.17\00:05:34.82 service, and Jesus Christ 00:05:34.85\00:05:36.46 being typified by the Lamb, 00:05:36.49\00:05:37.97 the Lamb of God takes away 00:05:38.00\00:05:39.31 the sins of the world. 00:05:39.35\00:05:40.58 Yet, there is more power in that animal, or in the meaning 00:05:40.62\00:05:46.14 behind that, the principle of self-sacrifice, the principal 00:05:46.18\00:05:50.73 of love is more powerful than all the power combined in 00:05:50.76\00:05:55.28 all of these beasts. 00:05:55.31\00:05:56.49 How powerful? Jesus says, "and I, if I be lifted up," 00:05:56.53\00:05:59.85 from the earth, from the cross, "will draw all to me. " 00:05:59.88\00:06:03.17 In other words the power of the cross, the power that is 00:06:03.20\00:06:07.14 embodied in the symbol of the Lamb is the power of God's 00:06:07.18\00:06:11.52 love to draw sinners to Himself without the use of force 00:06:11.55\00:06:15.86 and coercion. 00:06:15.89\00:06:17.64 It is a powerful thing to realize James, the Bible 00:06:17.67\00:06:20.15 throughout is communicating to us the awesome fact that 00:06:20.18\00:06:25.14 God does seek our salvation and our worship, but only on 00:06:25.17\00:06:30.09 the premise of a returning current of love to Him 00:06:30.13\00:06:33.19 because of the great love He has had for us. 00:06:33.22\00:06:35.40 You can see that this Chapter, Chapter 7 is in a very 00:06:35.43\00:06:40.16 real sense a parallel of Daniel Chapter 2. 00:06:40.20\00:06:43.10 There you had 4 parts of an image representing 00:06:43.14\00:06:45.97 different kingdoms, and it came down to the feet and 00:06:46.01\00:06:49.48 that feet divided into 10 parts. 00:06:49.51\00:06:50.95 Here you have 10 horns on this last beast, and those 10 00:06:50.98\00:06:54.44 horns would be parallel with those 10 toes in that image. 00:06:54.47\00:06:57.90 Then, like in the image, you have this rock, 00:06:57.93\00:07:00.61 this stone, that came and smote the image. 00:07:00.65\00:07:03.65 That hit the image at the feet. 00:07:03.69\00:07:04.98 Same here you have this vision continuing on until the 00:07:05.01\00:07:08.81 judgment and the return of Jesus Christ. 00:07:08.85\00:07:11.80 Until there is a judgment that takes place and the beast 00:07:11.83\00:07:15.11 is given to the burning flames. 00:07:15.14\00:07:17.43 You have some parallels here between these two prophecies. 00:07:17.47\00:07:20.44 That is powerful, so we have this succession of kingdoms. 00:07:20.47\00:07:23.89 We have 4 kingdoms that are mentioned and then Daniel 00:07:23.92\00:07:27.55 in verse 8 sees something that is very interesting and a 00:07:27.58\00:07:31.18 turn of events occurs with the fourth beast. 00:07:31.21\00:07:33.48 The 4th beast we have identified as the Roman empire in it's 00:07:33.52\00:07:39.30 secular form, in it's pagan form 00:07:39.34\00:07:42.14 Then he says that he sees a little horn come up out 00:07:42.18\00:07:48.05 of that fourth beast. 00:07:48.08\00:07:50.81 That little horn power is then the focus of the remainder 00:07:50.84\00:07:55.10 of Daniel Chapter 7 and there are specific characteristics 00:07:55.13\00:07:59.36 that identify it so that we know who this power is. 00:07:59.39\00:08:02.06 First of all we just need to realize that if you look at 00:08:02.10\00:08:05.27 the history books, it is obvious that there is only one 00:08:05.30\00:08:08.72 power that grew out of, and was the continuation of the 00:08:08.76\00:08:12.48 pagan Roman Empire and that was the papal Roman empire. 00:08:12.51\00:08:16.20 That is why there's only four beasts represented. 00:08:16.24\00:08:20.18 In fact the papal Roman empire was a Christianized 00:08:20.22\00:08:24.12 continuation of the pagan Roman empire. 00:08:24.16\00:08:28.01 The characteristics that are outlined are very fascinating. 00:08:28.05\00:08:31.32 They are, in fact we see this in relation to the first 00:08:31.35\00:08:35.04 verse, verse 8. 00:08:35.08\00:08:36.16 It plucked up three by the roots, it had the eyes 00:08:36.20\00:08:40.04 of a man, it came up among them. 00:08:40.07\00:08:41.79 That gives us a location and a little bit of the history 00:08:41.82\00:08:45.92 of the rise of this power. 00:08:45.96\00:08:47.73 It continues on until the judgment and that tells us that 00:08:47.76\00:08:50.88 this power that will come out of pagan Rome, will continue 00:08:50.92\00:08:54.00 on to the second coming of Jesus Christ. 00:08:54.04\00:08:55.93 So it has to be present day power. 00:08:55.97\00:08:57.69 Daniel, as he goes through the first part of this vision, 00:08:57.73\00:09:01.85 he is asking, verse 15, he's troubled and doesn't 00:09:01.89\00:09:05.99 understand the visions. 00:09:06.02\00:09:07.13 An angel comes near, a messenger comes near and Daniel wants 00:09:07.17\00:09:12.00 to know more about the interpretation but notice 00:09:12.04\00:09:15.54 what he says in verse 19. 00:09:15.57\00:09:16.85 He says, "then I would know" 00:09:16.89\00:09:18.53 "the truth of the fourth beast," 00:09:18.57\00:09:20.18 "which was different from" 00:09:20.21\00:09:22.04 "all the others, exceeding" 00:09:22.07\00:09:23.86 "dreadful, whose teeth were of iron, and his nails of brass:" 00:09:23.89\00:09:26.43 "which devoured, brake in pieces and stamp the residue with" 00:09:26.46\00:09:29.49 "his feet; and of the 10 horns that were in his head, and of" 00:09:29.52\00:09:32.51 "the other which came up, before whom three fell" 00:09:32.54\00:09:35.79 "even of that whole horn that had eyes," 00:09:35.83\00:09:38.14 "and a mouth that spake great things," 00:09:38.18\00:09:40.94 "whose look was more stout than his fellows. " 00:09:40.97\00:09:42.56 Daniel here is asking for more information, specifically 00:09:42.60\00:09:45.73 about the little horn, about the fourth beast. 00:09:45.77\00:09:47.81 That seems to be what the rest of Daniel 7 focuses in on. 00:09:47.85\00:09:51.44 There is another characteristic 00:09:51.48\00:09:53.66 of this power is 00:09:53.70\00:09:54.75 brought to view in verse 8 00:09:54.79\00:09:58.05 and also down in verses 20-22. 00:09:58.08\00:10:01.55 You have the fact that this power will speak, in my 00:10:01.59\00:10:05.19 version it says, "pompous words against the most high," 00:10:05.22\00:10:08.79 this is the New King James version. 00:10:08.82\00:10:10.54 The King James Version renders that characteristic will 00:10:10.57\00:10:14.42 "speak great words against the most high". 00:10:14.46\00:10:17.23 Another translation would indicate that this is "defaming" 00:10:17.26\00:10:23.08 "words against the most high. " 00:10:23.12\00:10:24.71 If you go and compare Revelation Chapter 13, another word is used 00:10:24.75\00:10:28.79 to fill out the meaning here and that is that this power 00:10:28.82\00:10:31.41 would speak " blasphemous words against the most high. " 00:10:31.44\00:10:34.74 All of these translations indicates simply that the 00:10:34.77\00:10:38.85 little horn power will focus its attention on defaming 00:10:38.88\00:10:42.98 the character of God, will focus it's attention on assuming 00:10:43.02\00:10:47.70 divine prerogatives and power, and will set itself up in 00:10:47.74\00:10:52.84 a capacity that brings blasphemy upon the character of God. 00:10:52.87\00:10:57.93 So this is another one of the characteristics. 00:10:57.97\00:10:59.41 Notice in verse 21 that it says that this, "Daniel beheld," 00:10:59.45\00:11:03.31 "and the little horn made war with the Saints," 00:11:03.34\00:11:06.47 "and prevailed against them;" 00:11:06.50\00:11:08.86 so it is a persecuting power. 00:11:08.89\00:11:11.18 Then it says in verse 22 this will continue on "until the" 00:11:11.21\00:11:15.83 "Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the" 00:11:15.86\00:11:20.23 "Saints of the most high; and the time came that the Saints" 00:11:20.27\00:11:22.97 "possess the kingdom. " 00:11:23.00\00:11:24.16 This is really interesting, I read also in the New King 00:11:24.19\00:11:27.53 James and it says, "judgment was made in favor of the" 00:11:27.57\00:11:30.87 "Saints and the most high. " 00:11:30.91\00:11:32.76 So you have a power that is warring against God's people, 00:11:32.80\00:11:36.19 the Saints, as they are identified here. 00:11:36.23\00:11:38.84 That is warring and persecuting people, a power that is assuming 00:11:38.88\00:11:42.50 the prerogatives of God, is speaking words that are 00:11:42.53\00:11:45.83 defaming God, defaming His character, or misrepresenting 00:11:45.86\00:11:49.78 God, and a power that is identified as coming out of 00:11:49.81\00:11:53.69 the pagan Roman power. 00:11:53.73\00:11:55.22 Yes, and then there is another characteristic that we 00:11:55.26\00:11:57.94 must mention James, and that is in verse 25. 00:11:57.98\00:12:00.88 That the little horn power will be a power that seeks, 00:12:00.91\00:12:06.78 or intends, or thinks to change times and laws. 00:12:06.81\00:12:13.42 Now this is fascinating because the context of verse 25 00:12:13.45\00:12:17.32 Isn't just that this power will think to change times and 00:12:17.36\00:12:21.19 laws as in any times and law. 00:12:21.23\00:12:23.22 It says he shall speak pompous words against the most high, 00:12:23.25\00:12:26.52 persecute the Saints and intend to change times and laws. 00:12:26.56\00:12:29.48 The indication here, grammatically and in the context 00:12:29.51\00:12:33.65 is that we can expect this power to attempt to change 00:12:33.68\00:12:37.78 the times and laws of the most high. 00:12:37.82\00:12:40.60 This power is tampering with the law of God. 00:12:40.64\00:12:44.93 This is so profound because as you look at the context 00:12:44.96\00:12:48.72 of the book of Daniel, the theme that you find in the 00:12:48.76\00:12:52.48 book of Daniel is the New Covenant theme. 00:12:52.52\00:12:54.33 It is the theme of the 00:12:54.36\00:12:55.47 everlasting covenant. 00:12:55.50\00:12:56.54 This theme is vital for God's 00:12:56.57\00:12:59.55 people to understand 00:12:59.59\00:13:00.56 especially in the end of time. 00:13:00.57\00:13:02.15 It is vital for us to recognize 00:13:02.18\00:13:03.69 what the New Covenant is so 00:13:03.72\00:13:05.17 that we can enter into that 00:13:05.20\00:13:06.57 New Covenant, that everlasting covenant with God. 00:13:06.61\00:13:08.80 One of the main themes that has been developed so far, 00:13:08.83\00:13:11.59 in the book of Daniel, its relationship. 00:13:11.62\00:13:13.75 We are going to look at this further, but God has designed 00:13:13.79\00:13:18.86 from the beginning that we would have an intimate 00:13:18.90\00:13:20.67 relationship with Him. 00:13:20.71\00:13:22.18 When He created us, He came to us every day at the cool 00:13:22.22\00:13:26.00 of the day and He met with us. 00:13:26.04\00:13:27.66 He walked with us and He talked with us. 00:13:27.69\00:13:29.68 Even when we sin, even when we turned away from Him, 00:13:29.71\00:13:32.51 even when we were hiding from God in that garden, 00:13:32.55\00:13:35.27 even as we turned from Him, He still came seeking after us. 00:13:35.31\00:13:39.40 Now the first six chapters of Daniel are intimately 00:13:39.44\00:13:43.21 directing us to that relationship experience. 00:13:43.24\00:13:46.32 Time and time again you see relationship, relationship 00:13:46.35\00:13:49.13 faith in God, understanding God, being drawn to God. 00:13:49.17\00:13:51.91 You see Nebuchadnezzar being drawn to God. 00:13:51.95\00:13:53.46 You see Darius being drawn to God. 00:13:53.49\00:13:54.53 Daniel relying on God and Daniel's friends relying on God. 00:13:54.56\00:13:57.80 So the very first half of this book has been developing 00:13:57.84\00:14:01.04 this New Covenant, everlasting gospel theme. 00:14:01.07\00:14:03.38 So as we've gone through Chapter 7 so far we have 00:14:03.42\00:14:07.31 identified the basic symbols, we see the basic powers 00:14:07.35\00:14:10.40 that are identified through the beast and focusing 00:14:10.44\00:14:13.46 in on the little horn. 00:14:13.49\00:14:14.70 Now we are seeing that there is a New Covenant theme in 00:14:14.73\00:14:18.44 the book of Daniel that comes to development here in 00:14:18.47\00:14:22.11 Chapter 7 as this power seeks to defaming God's character, 00:14:22.14\00:14:26.08 to break relationships with God, between Him and His 00:14:26.11\00:14:29.29 people, through persecuting them and blaspheming His 00:14:29.32\00:14:32.40 character, and changing God's law, which is at the heart 00:14:32.43\00:14:35.47 of the New Covenant. 00:14:35.51\00:14:36.48 Friends as we come back after the break, we are going to 00:14:36.49\00:14:39.45 explore in greater details the various features of the 00:14:39.48\00:14:42.90 New Covenant and how it is that God intends to lead us 00:14:42.94\00:14:46.29 into a relationship with Himself through that New Covenant. 00:14:46.32\00:14:49.41 So stay with us because we'll be right back! 00:14:49.45\00:14:50.89
