Welcome back to our study of Daniel Chapter 6. 00:00:01.06\00:00:02.99 James we are discovering some incredible things here. 00:00:03.03\00:00:05.33 I want to point out that it 00:00:05.36\00:00:06.90 is a common misconception that righteousness by faith or 00:00:06.94\00:00:11.53 salvation by grace through faith is a New Testament truth, 00:00:11.57\00:00:16.12 and that it is not in the Old Testament. 00:00:16.16\00:00:18.35 Those people back in the Old Testament they were saved by 00:00:18.38\00:00:20.72 keeping the law and there wasn't the faith factor for 00:00:20.75\00:00:23.99 salvation and deliverance in the Old Testament that we 00:00:24.03\00:00:27.24 have in the New Testament. 00:00:27.27\00:00:28.34 But here we see both in King Darius as well as in Daniel, 00:00:28.38\00:00:32.62 we see a beautiful exemplification of justification 00:00:32.66\00:00:38.29 by faith, righteousness by faith, 00:00:38.32\00:00:40.10 salvation by grace through faith. 00:00:40.14\00:00:41.84 First of all, in the King, he says, to Daniel, as he 00:00:41.88\00:00:45.91 realizes that this law has gone forth and it can't be 00:00:45.94\00:00:49.94 changed because the law of the Medes and the Persians 00:00:49.97\00:00:52.86 is a law that is irrevocable and cannot be changed. 00:00:52.89\00:00:56.94 He says to Daniel, in verse 16, "your God", Daniel, 00:00:56.98\00:01:01.27 "whom you serve continually, He will deliver you. " 00:01:01.31\00:01:05.56 There is a confidence there in King Darius. 00:01:05.60\00:01:08.97 He knows something of Daniel's God. 00:01:09.00\00:01:11.49 Yes the principles that you are talking about are all 00:01:13.03\00:01:15.35 the way through this Chapter. 00:01:15.39\00:01:16.69 You see faith being 00:01:16.73\00:01:18.14 manifested by not only the 00:01:18.18\00:01:20.11 King but Daniel. 00:01:20.15\00:01:21.23 For example in the context of the decree being written, 00:01:21.26\00:01:24.88 Daniel, by faith, goes to his room, the windows are open 00:01:24.92\00:01:28.50 and he is praying towards Jerusalem. 00:01:28.54\00:01:29.82 While he has faith and confidence in God he is taking 00:01:29.86\00:01:33.00 action, he is doing something. 00:01:33.03\00:01:34.53 He is working in harmony with that faith. 00:01:34.56\00:01:37.22 Yes and you see faith and works mingled also in the King. 00:01:37.26\00:01:41.74 While he says in verse 16, "your God whom you serve 00:01:41.78\00:01:47.12 continually, He will deliver you. " 00:01:47.16\00:01:49.22 That is a very strong manifestation of confidence and 00:01:49.26\00:01:52.13 faith in Daniel's God. 00:01:52.17\00:01:53.64 But then it says in verse 18 that the King engages, through 00:01:53.67\00:01:59.95 the night, in fasting and he is obviously troubled. 00:01:59.99\00:02:04.03 It says "his sleep went from him. " 00:02:04.07\00:02:06.00 So he is a little stressed out about this. 00:02:06.03\00:02:07.97 He likes Daniel and doesn't want to see Daniel be thrown 00:02:08.01\00:02:10.50 into the lion's den and be executed. 00:02:10.53\00:02:12.78 And yet he is confident. 00:02:12.81\00:02:16.11 We know that he is expecting Daniel to be delivered, 00:02:16.14\00:02:20.01 because he doesn't just say this whole thing is a 00:02:20.05\00:02:23.85 disaster, he goes to sleep, no he doesn't just go to sleep 00:02:23.89\00:02:28.65 but he is praying about it maybe? 00:02:28.69\00:02:30.99 It doesn't say that he is praying about it, but he has 00:02:31.03\00:02:33.27 learned something from Daniel. 00:02:33.31\00:02:34.43 He is at least fasting and immediately when morning comes 00:02:34.46\00:02:38.32 he rushes, the Scripture says, he went early, he arose 00:02:38.35\00:02:42.52 early in the morning and "went in haste to the lions den. " 00:02:42.56\00:02:47.38 "He spoke into the lions den with a lamenting voice. " 00:02:47.42\00:02:52.21 "And he says, Daniel, servant of the living God," 00:02:52.24\00:02:56.74 verse 20, "has your God, whom you serve continually," 00:02:56.77\00:03:01.24 "been able to deliver you from the lions?" 00:03:01.27\00:03:04.77 So that is a question. 00:03:04.81\00:03:05.87 Who is he talking to and why is he even saying that 00:03:05.91\00:03:07.42 if Daniel is dead? 00:03:07.46\00:03:08.88 Obviously this is works, working with his faith. 00:03:08.91\00:03:12.46 If he doesn't have works he doesn't go to lions den. 00:03:12.49\00:03:15.59 If he doesn't have works he doesn't talk because he's 00:03:15.63\00:03:18.11 be talking to nobody, he'd be talking to dead bones, 00:03:18.15\00:03:20.60 he would be talking to a skeleton. 00:03:20.63\00:03:22.02 So he has works, but these works are not the reason 00:03:22.05\00:03:24.39 why Daniel is saved. 00:03:24.42\00:03:26.24 Daniel isn't saved because he has been fasting through 00:03:26.28\00:03:28.49 the night, Daniel isn't saved from the lions because 00:03:28.53\00:03:31.03 he goes to the lions den the next morning and opens, 00:03:31.07\00:03:33.54 or rolls away the stone and talks to him. 00:03:33.57\00:03:35.48 Daniel is saved by faith in God. 00:03:35.51\00:03:38.20 God is the only One who can save Daniel. 00:03:38.24\00:03:40.25 God is the only one who can save us. 00:03:40.29\00:03:42.42 We are saved by grace through faith, 00:03:42.46\00:03:44.52 but it is the gift of God, it is not of works 00:03:44.56\00:03:46.89 lest any man should boast. 00:03:46.93\00:03:48.10 But we are his workmanship, Ephesians 2:8-10 says, 00:03:48.13\00:03:51.30 "created in Christ Jesus unto good works. " 00:03:51.33\00:03:54.55 Obviously the faith of Daniel, and the faith of Darius, 00:03:54.59\00:03:57.39 have led them to good works, to corresponding works. 00:03:57.42\00:04:00.15 The king had to be extremely gratified James, when he heard 00:04:00.19\00:04:03.80 the voice of Daniel speaking back, "O king live for ever," 00:04:03.84\00:04:07.42 verse 22, "my God sent his angel and shut the lions" 00:04:07.45\00:04:12.06 "mouth so they have not hurt me because I was found" 00:04:12.10\00:04:16.31 "innocent before him and also O King, I have done" 00:04:16.35\00:04:20.53 "no wrong before you. " 00:04:20.57\00:04:22.69 He had a conscience void of offense. 00:04:22.73\00:04:24.86 He has walked in integrity. 00:04:24.89\00:04:26.15 He knows that God is going to deliver him. 00:04:26.18\00:04:29.75 I think Daniel was confident from the very beginning 00:04:29.79\00:04:33.15 of this whole situation, he knew that God would be 00:04:33.19\00:04:36.52 faithful and deliver him. 00:04:36.55\00:04:37.74 It even says down in verse 23, "no injury was upon him. " 00:04:37.78\00:04:44.55 And I love these words James, 00:04:44.58\00:04:46.25 "because he believed in his God. " 00:04:46.29\00:04:51.19 Righteousness by faith, salvation deliverance by virtue 00:04:51.22\00:04:54.90 a faith in God's goodness and power to deliver. 00:04:54.94\00:04:58.19 Not by virtue in any confidence that 00:04:58.22\00:05:00.45 Daniel had in himself. 00:05:00.49\00:05:01.83 There is so many parallels here to the plan of salvation. 00:05:01.86\00:05:04.44 So many glimpses into the heart of God. 00:05:04.47\00:05:07.19 For example, in verse 23 it said, "then was the King" 00:05:07.23\00:05:10.24 "exceedingly glad for him. " 00:05:10.28\00:05:11.68 We are delivered from a lion, when we choose salvation, 00:05:11.72\00:05:14.92 when we chose to have faith in God there is joy in heaven 00:05:14.96\00:05:18.13 over one sinner there is joy in heaven. 00:05:18.16\00:05:20.33 Darius is a type of God in this sense that he is 00:05:20.37\00:05:23.43 exceedingly glad when Daniel exercises his faith 00:05:23.46\00:05:26.49 and finds salvation in his God. 00:05:26.52\00:05:28.54 God is exceedingly glad when we exercise faith and find 00:05:28.57\00:05:32.19 salvation in Him. 00:05:32.23\00:05:33.60 Also it says that his sleep went from him. 00:05:33.63\00:05:35.56 When we look at the big picture of the character of God, 00:05:35.59\00:05:38.83 the Bible teaches us that God doesn't slumber or sleep. 00:05:38.87\00:05:42.18 He is interested in us and working in our behalf 24/7, 00:05:42.22\00:05:45.85 365 a year, He is continually working in our behalf. 00:05:45.89\00:05:49.57 He fasted, Jesus said I will not drink of the fruit of 00:05:49.61\00:05:53.26 this vine, grape, until I drink it anew with you 00:05:53.30\00:05:56.75 in My kingdom. 00:05:56.79\00:05:58.06 We have these types of Christ, these types of God that are 00:05:58.09\00:06:00.45 seen in the attitude, in the heart, in the spirit of 00:06:00.48\00:06:04.48 Darius towards Daniel. 00:06:04.51\00:06:05.55 There are other parallels as well on the negative side 00:06:05.59\00:06:08.33 of this story. 00:06:08.36\00:06:09.56 Those who enter into this betrayal of Daniel and seek to 00:06:09.60\00:06:15.63 pressure and trick the King into executing Daniel, 00:06:15.66\00:06:20.48 we can see characteristics here of the enemy of our souls 00:06:20.51\00:06:25.12 and how he works to entrap us into thinking that would 00:06:25.15\00:06:29.61 drive us away from God. 00:06:29.65\00:06:30.81 For example James, what about the idea here that the law 00:06:30.85\00:06:35.09 of the Medes and the Persians is unchangeable. 00:06:35.12\00:06:38.56 God's laws are unchangeable, God's laws cannot be set 00:06:38.60\00:06:43.24 aside and yet God's mercy triumphs over justice because 00:06:43.27\00:06:47.87 where sin abounds grace much more abounds. 00:06:47.91\00:06:50.37 The devil continually is trying to drive us away from 00:06:50.41\00:06:54.60 the Savior, away from salvation by pressing upon us our 00:06:54.63\00:06:58.25 guilt and a sense of condemnation and separation from 00:06:58.29\00:07:02.41 God by trying to get us to believe our sin is so great 00:07:02.45\00:07:06.54 that even God, by His grace can't save us. 00:07:06.58\00:07:09.07 In fact, God's law is unchangeable and justice must 00:07:09.10\00:07:11.72 be executed and there is no forgiveness with God. 00:07:11.75\00:07:15.84 Yet Darius reveals that yes the law can't be changed 00:07:15.88\00:07:20.11 but at the same time there is mercy in the heart of God. 00:07:20.15\00:07:23.76 Daniel is saved by virtue of God's mercy, not because 00:07:23.79\00:07:27.37 Daniel is righteous in and of himself. 00:07:27.40\00:07:29.86 I really like that because when you look at the context 00:07:29.89\00:07:32.29 of this story in light of the plan of salvation, 00:07:32.33\00:07:35.48 you find here in verse 14 that when the king realized 00:07:35.51\00:07:40.05 what he had done, "he was sore displeased with himself. " 00:07:40.08\00:07:44.43 In the big picture of the great controversy, God recognizes 00:07:44.46\00:07:47.99 what we have done and He takes responsibility for our 00:07:48.03\00:07:52.29 sin, He takes upon Himself the consequences of our 00:07:52.32\00:07:56.46 iniquity and allows us to experience the mercy rather 00:07:56.50\00:08:00.60 than the justice of the sentence. 00:08:00.63\00:08:02.78 So what we see in God is, we see this blending of 00:08:02.82\00:08:05.58 mercy and justice. 00:08:05.62\00:08:06.78 He doesn't do away with His law, the law is the very 00:08:06.82\00:08:09.67 essence and foundation of who He is. 00:08:09.71\00:08:11.13 God is love, Jesus said the greatest Commandment is to love 00:08:11.16\00:08:13.40 God and the second is to love your neighbor as yourself. 00:08:13.44\00:08:16.60 So the government of God needs this stability of law, 00:08:16.64\00:08:20.33 but it must have mercy in the context of the fact that we 00:08:20.36\00:08:23.55 are sinners and there is only one way we can be saved. 00:08:23.59\00:08:26.74 That is by the grace and mercy of God. 00:08:26.78\00:08:28.27 King David gives us a beautiful insight to this balance 00:08:28.31\00:08:32.31 between justice and mercy 00:08:32.35\00:08:34.12 when he looks forward to 00:08:34.15\00:08:36.14 prophecy to the cross and he 00:08:36.17\00:08:39.58 says that mercy and truth kissed 00:08:39.62\00:08:42.96 each other at the cross of Calvary. 00:08:43.00\00:08:45.20 When we look at what happened to the Lord Jesus Christ 00:08:45.24\00:08:49.46 in those final hours of His life, what we see is the 00:08:49.49\00:08:53.68 heart of God manifested. 00:08:53.71\00:08:54.97 We seek God eager to save, to deliver. 00:08:55.01\00:08:58.33 We see God exercising mercy and grace and at the same 00:08:58.37\00:09:01.63 time we see that Jesus, is in fact, 00:09:01.67\00:09:05.23 bearing our sin and dying. 00:09:05.26\00:09:06.72 If the law of God could have been changed, the cross would 00:09:06.75\00:09:11.02 have been completely unnecessary. 00:09:11.05\00:09:12.70 God would have just changed His law to accommodate 00:09:12.74\00:09:15.53 fallen man in his sin. 00:09:15.57\00:09:17.43 The fact is that God's law is the foundation of His 00:09:17.47\00:09:20.64 Government and really a transcript of His character. 00:09:20.67\00:09:24.96 It is the essence of what love is, God's law is. 00:09:24.99\00:09:28.89 So God's law can't be laid aside anymore then God's 00:09:28.92\00:09:31.95 character can be changed, anymore than God's love 00:09:31.98\00:09:34.97 can be laid aside. 00:09:35.01\00:09:36.85 He maintains the integrity of His law and the cross 00:09:36.89\00:09:39.97 proves that the law of God is immutable and yet that 00:09:40.00\00:09:43.45 the mercy of God is able to save in spite of our sin. 00:09:43.48\00:09:46.90 And yet we see this in the story to, we see an 00:09:46.93\00:09:48.90 unchangeable law and unchangeable principle, 00:09:48.93\00:09:50.86 and yet we see salvation for Daniel. 00:09:50.90\00:09:53.16 We also see the justice. 00:09:53.19\00:09:54.81 We see here as we read in 00:09:54.84\00:09:56.76 verses 24 and 25, it says 00:09:56.80\00:09:58.65 here, "and the King commanded," 00:09:58.68\00:09:59.91 "and they brought those men" 00:09:59.94\00:10:01.10 "which had accused Daniel and a cast of them into the" 00:10:01.13\00:10:03.74 "den of lions, them, their children, and their wives;" 00:10:03.77\00:10:06.35 "and the lions had the mastery of them, and brake" 00:10:06.38\00:10:08.97 "all their bones in pieces ever they came" 00:10:09.00\00:10:10.92 "at the bottom of the den. " 00:10:10.96\00:10:12.03 And what you find here is you find justice. 00:10:12.07\00:10:14.47 The reason why the king is so severe with these men is 00:10:14.51\00:10:17.38 because they have lied over and over again to the king. 00:10:17.41\00:10:20.22 They lied in verse 7, "all the presidents came together", and 00:10:20.25\00:10:22.40 all the presidents hadn't come together. 00:10:22.44\00:10:23.92 They lied in verse 13, "they answered and said before" 00:10:23.95\00:10:26.75 "the king that Daniel, which is of the children of the" 00:10:26.78\00:10:29.54 "captivity of Judah, doesn't regard thee O King. " 00:10:29.58\00:10:32.12 Daniel did regard the king. 00:10:32.16\00:10:34.10 He was the only one that was regarding the king. 00:10:34.14\00:10:36.38 He was the only one that was faithful to the king and so 00:10:36.42\00:10:38.83 the king realizes, when this whole story unfolds, 00:10:38.86\00:10:41.32 he realizes these men have deceived him, they have lied 00:10:41.35\00:10:44.36 to him, and they are the ones that should reap the 00:10:44.39\00:10:46.97 consequences of their own actions. 00:10:47.01\00:10:48.84 The Bible in Revelation says that those who are in the 00:10:48.88\00:10:51.93 lake of fire, those who are lost in the end. 00:10:51.96\00:10:53.49 Those who receive the justice and the consequences of 00:10:53.53\00:10:56.35 their actions are inclusive and those people are liars. 00:10:56.38\00:10:59.90 What God is seeking to reveal to us in this context is 00:10:59.93\00:11:04.53 don't connect with and become one with the sinful wicked 00:11:04.56\00:11:09.12 lying element in your nature and the nature 00:11:09.15\00:11:12.26 of those around you. 00:11:12.29\00:11:13.38 They, their wives, their children, if we become 00:11:13.42\00:11:15.59 children of the devil, if we are married to the devil, 00:11:15.63\00:11:18.13 if we are connected with the devil because the place of 00:11:18.16\00:11:21.17 torment, place of hell and punishment, the place of 00:11:21.20\00:11:23.88 annihilation has been reserved for the devil and 00:11:23.92\00:11:26.57 his angels, not for any human being. 00:11:26.60\00:11:28.88 If we refuse the mercy and love of God. 00:11:28.92\00:11:31.12 If we refuse to connect with God and forsake all of our 00:11:31.16\00:11:34.76 sins and give them to Jesus, then we will be included 00:11:34.80\00:11:38.36 with the devil in that judgment. 00:11:38.40\00:11:41.22 Those who betrayed the king and Daniel weren't anymore 00:11:41.25\00:11:46.15 sinners than Daniel himself, or the king, 00:11:46.19\00:11:49.35 or Nebuchadnezzar. 00:11:49.39\00:11:50.57 They had the opportunity for salvation as well as 00:11:50.61\00:11:55.07 every other sinner, but they did not avail themselves 00:11:55.10\00:11:59.53 of the grace of God. 00:11:59.56\00:12:01.67 They were not perceiving, they were not receiving, 00:12:01.71\00:12:04.93 and they were not accepting the grace of God by which 00:12:04.97\00:12:08.15 they themselves could have been delivered. 00:12:08.19\00:12:10.28 As Chapter 6 of Daniel comes to a conclusion James, 00:12:10.32\00:12:14.41 we have something similar to what we find with 00:12:14.44\00:12:17.50 Nebuchadnezzar and that is that Darius begins to bear 00:12:17.54\00:12:20.88 testimony and he sends out a memo, a letter to every nation 00:12:20.92\00:12:27.48 and people group, and language group on the earth and 00:12:27.51\00:12:30.42 he says, like Nebuchadnezzar before him, peace be 00:12:30.46\00:12:33.36 multiplied to you and then he begins to extol 00:12:33.39\00:12:36.26 the God of heaven. 00:12:36.29\00:12:38.05 You know what he is wanting to do here? 00:12:38.08\00:12:39.69 He is wanting to do what we were just talking about. 00:12:39.73\00:12:42.24 He is wanting people to make a decision for God. 00:12:42.28\00:12:44.72 He doesn't want them to end up like his wise men ended up. 00:12:44.75\00:12:47.21 I want you to know about this God and take a stand 00:12:47.25\00:12:49.87 for this God because He is the God of gods. 00:12:49.91\00:12:52.38 He is the King of kings. 00:12:52.42\00:12:53.51 He is the living God, Darius proclaims. 00:12:53.55\00:12:56.62 He is steadfast for ever. 00:12:56.66\00:12:58.65 He says that his kingdom is a kingdom that will endure 00:12:58.68\00:13:03.04 forever and he says that He is a God who delivers and 00:13:03.07\00:13:06.94 He is eager to deliver every one of us dear friends. 00:13:06.98\00:13:10.86 Turn to Him and you also, like Daniel, will be saved. 00:13:10.89\00:13:14.74
