Hello friends! 00:00:20.85\00:00:22.68 Welcome to Books of the Book. 00:00:22.71\00:00:24.58 We are presently engaged in an 00:00:24.61\00:00:26.34 exciting study of the book of 00:00:26.37\00:00:28.30 Daniel and my name is Ty Gibson. 00:00:28.33\00:00:30.19 And I'm James Rafferty and right now we are transitioning 00:00:30.22\00:00:33.09 to a different power in Daniel 00:00:33.13\00:00:36.02 Chapter 6 and we are 00:00:36.06\00:00:37.53 transitioning from the power 00:00:37.57\00:00:39.49 of Babylon to the power of Media Persia. 00:00:39.53\00:00:41.93 We see in Daniel 2 these four kingdoms that are revealed to 00:00:41.97\00:00:46.23 King Nebuchadnezzar and we have moved from the head of gold 00:00:46.27\00:00:49.51 to the chest of silver. 00:00:49.54\00:00:51.69 Media Persia was a kingdom that was to follow Babylon 00:00:51.73\00:00:54.45 in this secession and Darius is the ruler. 00:00:54.49\00:00:56.78 He is establishing his kingdom in place of the Babylonian 00:00:56.82\00:00:59.96 kingdom and as he establishes his kingdom here in 00:01:00.00\00:01:03.07 verse 1 in and onward. 00:01:03.10\00:01:04.59 He decides that he is going to set as one of the 00:01:04.63\00:01:08.14 principal rulers, presidents in his kingdom. 00:01:08.17\00:01:10.73 One of those rulers was part of the kingdom of Babylon. 00:01:10.76\00:01:14.06 Who do you think that is? 00:01:14.10\00:01:15.33 Daniel of course. 00:01:15.36\00:01:16.51 Daniel and let's read here in verse 1, Daniel Chapter 6. 00:01:16.54\00:01:19.77 "It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom 120 princes," 00:01:19.80\00:01:23.00 "which should be over the whole kingdom. " 00:01:23.03\00:01:25.09 "And over these," verse 2, "three presidents; of whom" 00:01:25.12\00:01:29.08 "Daniel was first; that the princes might give an account" 00:01:29.12\00:01:33.05 "unto them, and the king should have no damage. " 00:01:33.72\00:01:35.61 And it says in verse 3, "then this Daniel was preferred" 00:01:35.65\00:01:39.38 "above the presidents and princes, because an excellent" 00:01:39.42\00:01:42.50 "Spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him" 00:01:42.53\00:01:45.58 "over the whole realm. " 00:01:45.62\00:01:47.64 This is amazing, Daniel again emerges in this story as one 00:01:47.67\00:01:53.37 who distinguishes himself by virtue of his integrity. 00:01:53.40\00:01:58.11 He has purposed in his heart to serve God. 00:01:58.14\00:02:00.54 He has been faithful in his commitment to the Lord. 00:02:00.57\00:02:04.61 He has been faithful in his service to this foreign power, 00:02:04.65\00:02:08.35 even though he is a captive, a slave in a foreign land. 00:02:08.39\00:02:12.44 He serves with all his might and talent as though he were 00:02:12.47\00:02:16.49 in his own homeland. 00:02:16.52\00:02:18.62 Daniel is a person of incredible character and integrity. 00:02:18.65\00:02:24.32 This works itself out in the king, King Darius, of the 00:02:24.35\00:02:29.98 Medes and the Persians. 00:02:30.01\00:02:31.08 He recognizes Daniel and he determined in verse 3, 00:02:31.12\00:02:35.48 to sit Daniel over the entire realm, only second to the 00:02:35.51\00:02:39.10 king himself and this of course begins to arouse jealousy 00:02:39.14\00:02:43.83 in the hearts of those other presidents and princes that 00:02:43.87\00:02:48.06 are in the kingdom but don't have the same character and 00:02:48.10\00:02:52.26 integrity as Daniel. 00:02:52.29\00:02:53.43 So they begin to contrive and to lay a trap for Daniel. 00:02:53.46\00:02:57.82 What is so incredible about this is Darius recognizes in 00:02:57.86\00:03:02.18 Daniel this excellent Spirit. 00:03:02.22\00:03:03.94 He has already seen that he is capable and the whole 00:03:03.97\00:03:07.46 point is that we are in a political environment here. 00:03:07.49\00:03:10.94 Everyone is on the take. 00:03:10.97\00:03:12.30 Everyone has a price and Daniel doesn't. 00:03:12.34\00:03:15.26 Daniel is different from everyone else. 00:03:15.30\00:03:18.15 He has an excellent spirit and I would venture to say 00:03:18.19\00:03:21.75 that he has the Spirit of God. 00:03:21.78\00:03:23.04 He has an other centered, selfless Spirit. 00:03:23.07\00:03:26.81 So he is not into any of this for himself. 00:03:26.85\00:03:30.55 He is not thinking about himself. 00:03:30.58\00:03:31.85 When Darius looks at Daniel, he says there is a man I 00:03:31.89\00:03:36.01 can trust because there is nothing about him that is 00:03:36.04\00:03:39.24 going to make a decision that will benefit himself. 00:03:39.28\00:03:42.76 It is all going to be other centered decision-making. 00:03:42.80\00:03:45.65 I think that even though he is one of the 3 00:03:45.69\00:03:48.51 presidents, I think that I will set him above 00:03:48.54\00:03:50.00 all of the presidents. 00:03:50.03\00:03:51.78 I see that I can trust this man. 00:03:51.81\00:03:55.01 This is the essence basically of why these 00:03:55.04\00:03:58.21 presidents are upset. 00:03:58.24\00:03:59.30 These other presidents and princes are upset because 00:03:59.33\00:04:02.31 in the political environment everyone has a price, 00:04:02.35\00:04:05.36 everyone is on the take, and they are out to get 00:04:05.39\00:04:08.37 something for themselves. 00:04:08.41\00:04:09.98 As long as Daniel is head over them, 00:04:10.01\00:04:12.71 that is not going to happen. 00:04:12.74\00:04:14.22 Daniel doesn't even aspire to a higher position. 00:04:14.25\00:04:17.79 He is just doing his best. 00:04:17.83\00:04:19.57 He is being faithful. 00:04:19.61\00:04:21.10 He is being honest and 00:04:21.14\00:04:23.07 serving the king in what 00:04:23.10\00:04:24.96 ever capacity he has placed in, 00:04:25.00\00:04:26.81 and it is his integrity 00:04:26.85\00:04:28.78 that begins to elevate him in the estimation of the king. 00:04:28.82\00:04:33.53 These individuals who begin to conspire against Daniel James, 00:04:33.56\00:04:38.22 they begin to look at him and examine him, and even as his 00:04:38.26\00:04:42.88 enemies, it says down in verse 4, that he was faithful and 00:04:42.92\00:04:47.51 there was no fault that they could find in him. 00:04:47.55\00:04:50.74 He was other centered, selfless service, and he had 00:04:50.77\00:04:54.56 honor and integrity, he had obedience, he had purity. 00:04:54.59\00:04:58.09 All these characteristics of who Daniel was. 00:04:58.13\00:05:01.60 His person, appealed to Darius. 00:05:01.63\00:05:04.01 Darius saw these because 00:05:04.04\00:05:05.61 Darius himself, I think, was 00:05:05.64\00:05:07.18 developing these characters 00:05:07.22\00:05:08.50 in his own heart and mind. 00:05:08.53\00:05:09.74 We will see that as the story progresses. 00:05:09.78\00:05:11.07 So it is amazing when you think about it, it is amazing 00:05:11.10\00:05:14.74 that some one could stand in a political realm, a 00:05:14.78\00:05:18.16 political environment and enemies can't find fault. 00:05:18.20\00:05:21.55 There is a lot of mudslinging that goes on 00:05:21.59\00:05:23.30 in a political environment. 00:05:23.34\00:05:24.54 As soon as someone is aspired to a certain position, 00:05:24.57\00:05:27.79 the other opponent is going to get the garbage on 00:05:27.83\00:05:31.01 that person and get it out in the public. 00:05:31.05\00:05:33.15 So here we see the presidents and princes trying to 00:05:33.18\00:05:37.03 find something on Daniel. 00:05:37.06\00:05:38.62 They are trying to get something on him and they 00:05:38.65\00:05:40.25 can't find anything. 00:05:40.29\00:05:42.06 He is standing before his enemies without fault. 00:05:42.09\00:05:44.48 So in verse 5 they come to 00:05:44.51\00:05:46.33 the only conclusion they can 00:05:46.37\00:05:48.19 and that is that they are 00:05:48.22\00:05:49.98 going to seek to find fault in Daniel. 00:05:50.01\00:05:52.35 It says in verse 5 "to find fault in Daniel" 00:05:52.38\00:05:55.72 "concerning the law of his God. " 00:05:55.76\00:05:59.72 They know that Daniel is faithful, that Daniel is 00:05:59.75\00:06:03.29 filled with integrity and if they are going to trip 00:06:03.32\00:06:06.15 him up, if they are going to trap him, they are going 00:06:06.18\00:06:08.97 to have to somehow capitalize on his strengths, 00:06:09.01\00:06:12.60 not on his weaknesses. 00:06:12.63\00:06:14.36 They cannot see any weaknesses. 00:06:14.39\00:06:15.80 It is amazing so they come before the king, 00:06:15.83\00:06:18.32 they assemble before the king and they praise him, 00:06:18.35\00:06:21.75 they flatter him, O Darius live for ever. 00:06:21.78\00:06:24.14 Then they speak a lie, and in every political situation 00:06:24.18\00:06:28.55 you have about a 90% truth and just a little bit 00:06:28.58\00:06:31.48 of a lie, that is taking place here, verse 7. 00:06:31.52\00:06:34.34 "All the Presidents of the kingdom, the governors," 00:06:34.38\00:06:36.48 "and the princes, the counselors, and the captains," 00:06:36.52\00:06:38.76 "have consulted together to establish a royal statute," 00:06:38.79\00:06:41.48 "and to make a firm decree, that whosoever shall ask a" 00:06:41.51\00:06:44.24 "petition of any God or man for 30 days, save of thee," 00:06:44.28\00:06:46.97 "O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions. " 00:06:47.01\00:06:49.89 Now that is not true. 00:06:49.92\00:06:50.96 All of the princes and governors have not consulted 00:06:50.99\00:06:54.79 together, they left one person out. 00:06:54.83\00:06:56.47 Daniel has not been included in this consultation for 00:06:56.50\00:07:00.04 a deliberate purpose. 00:07:00.08\00:07:01.29 But the president believes, the king I should say, 00:07:01.32\00:07:04.37 believes them. 00:07:04.41\00:07:05.56 He trusts them and thinks that they have his well-being. 00:07:05.59\00:07:09.84 He is flattered, this is a great idea the king is thinking, 00:07:09.87\00:07:14.09 you mean 30 days? 00:07:14.12\00:07:16.21 Everyone will be focused on me and nobody will be able 00:07:16.25\00:07:19.66 to recognize any gods authority or any other human beings 00:07:19.69\00:07:23.07 authority except for me, that's a great idea. 00:07:23.11\00:07:25.53 Pride is intoxicating, pride can cause us to do things, or to 00:07:25.56\00:07:29.72 be deceived into doing things we wouldn't normally do. 00:07:29.75\00:07:32.30 So that is what they are using, they are using the 00:07:32.33\00:07:34.85 intoxicating influence of pride. 00:07:34.88\00:07:36.68 This is the influence that Satan, our enemy used to gain 00:07:36.72\00:07:40.12 our obedience and allegiance. 00:07:40.16\00:07:42.10 It is the same influence they are using 00:07:42.14\00:07:43.92 here towards Darius. 00:07:43.95\00:07:45.28 And yet we know that the king, in this instance, 00:07:45.32\00:07:49.19 just like Nebuchadnezzar, is one upon whom the Lord 00:07:49.22\00:07:53.06 has taken an interest. 00:07:53.10\00:07:55.00 The Lord wants the heart of king Darius. 00:07:55.04\00:07:58.61 He wants to bring him to himself for eternal salvation. 00:07:58.64\00:08:02.62 You see in the king that he is inclined to the Lord. 00:08:02.66\00:08:06.34 Yes, in fact maybe more so than Nebuchadnezzar was. 00:08:06.38\00:08:10.03 We will see these principles later on. 00:08:10.06\00:08:12.18 It behooves us to recognize how that even good people, 00:08:12.21\00:08:15.92 people who are inclined in the right way, and when I say 00:08:15.96\00:08:19.63 good I use that term loosely. 00:08:19.67\00:08:21.24 How much they, we can, can be influenced deceptively. 00:08:21.27\00:08:27.10 How pride can be used to intoxicate us and mislead us in 00:08:27.14\00:08:32.56 a way that causes us to make decisions to make choices 00:08:32.60\00:08:37.99 that are not in harmony with God's will. 00:08:38.02\00:08:40.14 It can be hurtful to other people. 00:08:40.17\00:08:41.15 The king was a smart guy, but you can see here that 00:08:41.19\00:08:43.64 appealing to his pride, his arrogance and their flattery 00:08:43.67\00:08:48.04 skewed his reasoning power and he doesn't even see 00:08:48.08\00:08:52.41 what they are up to. 00:08:52.45\00:08:53.42 Somehow he is blind to their plan because we learn, 00:08:53.43\00:08:56.80 as the story goes on, that the king of course favors 00:08:56.83\00:08:59.64 Daniel, he doesn't want any harm to come to Daniel. 00:08:59.67\00:09:02.44 That's why he placed him above his kingdom. 00:09:02.48\00:09:03.71 The moment that he realizes what is taking place, 00:09:03.75\00:09:08.67 it says there in verse 14 that the king "was greatly" 00:09:08.71\00:09:13.60 "displeased with himself. " 00:09:13.63\00:09:15.80 This is an indication that here is a man with a true heart, 00:09:15.84\00:09:22.14 who has sensitivity to the moving of 00:09:22.18\00:09:25.40 God's Spirit upon him. 00:09:25.43\00:09:26.55 He is displeased with himself. 00:09:26.59\00:09:28.48 This is the king, he doesn't need to be displeased with 00:09:28.51\00:09:31.51 himself, but Daniel's life is of value to the king and he 00:09:31.54\00:09:34.50 realizes that he has been tricked, he has been deceived. 00:09:34.54\00:09:38.63 He doesn't want Daniel to be subjected to this deception 00:09:38.66\00:09:42.72 and this harm, he wants Daniel to be delivered. 00:09:42.75\00:09:45.59 Absolutely and what is powerful about this story, 00:09:45.63\00:09:48.44 as you are looking at the 00:09:48.47\00:09:49.92 king you see in many 00:09:49.96\00:09:51.85 instances a type of Christ. 00:09:51.89\00:09:53.40 You see the Spirit of Christ 00:09:53.43\00:09:54.75 and His attitude the way he 00:09:54.79\00:09:56.04 responds and you know God's spirit is working on his heart. 00:09:56.07\00:09:58.69 He is responding to that. 00:09:58.72\00:10:00.14 You also see in Daniel something that is interesting. 00:10:00.17\00:10:02.69 I don't know if you have ever experienced this Ty. 00:10:02.73\00:10:05.17 I have been in situations, as a Christian, as a believer, 00:10:05.21\00:10:09.56 where I have been uncomfortable, perhaps, praying publicly. 00:10:09.59\00:10:13.43 I travel a lot, I'm in an airport and getting some lunch. 00:10:13.46\00:10:17.30 There are people all around me and I am not sure if people 00:10:17.34\00:10:21.14 are going to look at me funny, or think funny things 00:10:21.18\00:10:23.24 if I pause and pray. 00:10:23.27\00:10:25.02 Daniel here is a powerful testimony of the necessity 00:10:25.06\00:10:30.67 to connect with God in prayer. 00:10:30.70\00:10:32.21 In all times and in all situations. 00:10:32.24\00:10:33.83 He is not sitting in an airport, it is not a little 00:10:33.86\00:10:37.17 thing for Daniel, this is huge. 00:10:37.21\00:10:38.88 This decree goes forth, it is signed and it goes forth. 00:10:38.92\00:10:42.70 No man can ask a petition of any gods save of Darius. 00:10:42.73\00:10:46.69 When it goes forth it says in verse 10, "when Daniel knew 00:10:46.72\00:10:50.64 that the writing was signed," he knew it was signed. 00:10:50.68\00:10:52.66 "He went to his house," his windows were open, 00:10:52.69\00:10:56.86 he didn't close them. 00:10:56.89\00:10:58.05 "His chamber windows were opened towards Jerusalem," 00:10:58.08\00:11:01.66 "he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed," 00:11:01.70\00:11:04.95 "and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime. " 00:11:04.98\00:11:07.93 Now what is incredible about this, it is not just that he 00:11:07.97\00:11:10.80 prayed, not that he just prayed even though his life was 00:11:10.83\00:11:13.63 at stake, here I am wondering if I should pray 00:11:13.66\00:11:16.20 for my lunch in an airport. 00:11:16.24\00:11:17.84 His life is at stake, if he prays he is dead. 00:11:17.88\00:11:20.77 But he does it openly, just like he did before time. 00:11:20.80\00:11:24.13 He does not close his windows and shut the doors. 00:11:24.16\00:11:27.45 He doesn't openly and when he prays he says, 00:11:27.49\00:11:30.06 thank you Lord, thank you. 00:11:30.09\00:11:32.33 You know what he is saying, he is saying, thank you Lord 00:11:32.37\00:11:34.13 because I know that You have a plan in all of this. 00:11:34.16\00:11:37.96 As bad as this looks, as difficult as this seems, 00:11:37.99\00:11:41.66 as great of a trial, friends that may be coming 00:11:41.70\00:11:45.34 upon you in your life. 00:11:45.37\00:11:46.56 As dark as your circumstances may be, you can praise 00:11:46.59\00:11:49.73 the Lord because that is no time for you to sever your 00:11:49.77\00:11:52.88 connection with God. 00:11:52.91\00:11:53.97 That is no time for you not to pray. 00:11:54.01\00:11:55.32 When you are most needy, when you are most overwhelmed, 00:11:55.36\00:11:57.61 when you are most discouraged, that is the time to 00:11:57.64\00:11:59.69 maintain that connection with God and to thank God 00:11:59.72\00:12:01.73 because He is going to do something powerful 00:12:01.77\00:12:04.41 through you to His glory. 00:12:04.45\00:12:07.16 So James, Daniel knows that 00:12:07.19\00:12:09.21 the decree has gone forth. 00:12:09.24\00:12:11.25 He knows his life is in 00:12:11.28\00:12:13.53 danger and he understands 00:12:13.56\00:12:15.74 his situation, but he is unwavering in his faithfulness. 00:12:15.77\00:12:20.05 He is free from fear. 00:12:20.08\00:12:23.11 He absolutely is unwavering and he is not concerned with 00:12:23.15\00:12:29.72 the outcome, he is not himself engaging in counter 00:12:29.75\00:12:33.77 manipulation maneuvers in order to save himself. 00:12:33.80\00:12:37.82 As you pointed out earlier, Daniel is governed by a 00:12:37.86\00:12:41.85 deep-seated other centeredness. 00:12:41.88\00:12:44.02 He is genuinely concerned for the king, and he is as 00:12:44.06\00:12:48.94 evidenced, in previous chapters, he is even concerned 00:12:48.98\00:12:53.06 for his enemies, those who are contriving against him. 00:12:53.09\00:12:57.16 Daniels heart is set upon faithfulness to his God and 00:12:57.19\00:13:00.96 a genuine concern and love for his fellow human beings, 00:13:00.99\00:13:04.72 even his enemies. 00:13:04.76\00:13:06.05 He just precedes as is his daily habit to kneel down and 00:13:06.08\00:13:10.55 pray, he is not concerned with the outcome for himself. 00:13:10.59\00:13:14.16 He is confident that God has a whole matter in hand. 00:13:14.20\00:13:17.41 This is powerful Ty, because basically what Daniel is 00:13:17.44\00:13:20.83 doing he is saying, I don't trust in earthly powers. 00:13:20.87\00:13:24.22 I don't trust in the favor of kings. 00:13:24.26\00:13:26.31 I don't trust in my situation or circumstances. 00:13:26.35\00:13:29.13 Daniel could think will I could figure this out. 00:13:29.17\00:13:31.88 I have been made number one ruler even though I came from 00:13:31.91\00:13:34.83 Babylon, I have a lot of pull and influence with the king. 00:13:34.86\00:13:37.56 He doesn't trust any of that because that can perish in 00:13:37.60\00:13:40.26 a moment, it can perish in a day. 00:13:40.30\00:13:41.74 His complete trust and loyalty is with God. 00:13:41.78\00:13:45.53 I think it is a powerful testimony. 00:13:45.57\00:13:47.03 I think that is what God is wanting for you and me friends. 00:13:47.06\00:13:49.88 I think God wants us to put our complete trust in Him 00:13:49.91\00:13:53.03 and not in the circumstances of life. 00:13:53.06\00:13:55.71 Not in the favor of kings, or princes, or presidents. 00:13:55.75\00:13:59.81 He wants us to put our complete trust in Him. 00:13:59.85\00:14:01.99 Then we can have joy and peace and we can know that 00:14:02.03\00:14:04.82 the outcome is going to be good and positive 00:14:04.86\00:14:06.72 for Him and for us. 00:14:06.76\00:14:08.42 Don't go away we will be right back! 00:14:08.46\00:14:10.17
