Welcome back friends! 00:00:01.98\00:00:02.95 We are in Daniel Chapter 5. 00:00:02.96\00:00:03.93 We are picking up as Daniel 00:00:03.94\00:00:05.26 is brought in before Belshazzar 00:00:05.30\00:00:07.06 right here in verse 13. 00:00:07.09\00:00:08.96 "Then was Daniel brought in before the king. " 00:00:09.00\00:00:11.45 "And the king spake and said unto Daniel, are you 00:00:11.48\00:00:13.85 "Daniel, which are at the children of the captivity of" 00:00:13.88\00:00:16.28 "Judah, whom the king, my father brought out Jewry?" 00:00:16.32\00:00:18.65 "I have heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in" 00:00:18.68\00:00:21.66 "thee, and that light and understanding and an excellent" 00:00:21.70\00:00:24.64 "wisdom is found in thee. " Verse 14. 00:00:24.67\00:00:27.27 "And now the wise men, the astrologers, had been brought" 00:00:27.31\00:00:30.11 "in before me, that they should read this writing," 00:00:30.15\00:00:32.71 "and make known unto me the interpretation there of:" 00:00:32.74\00:00:35.24 "but they could not show the interpretation of the thing;" 00:00:35.27\00:00:38.84 Here is Belshazzar acknowledging that his own wise men 00:00:38.87\00:00:42.28 cannot read or interpret this writing that has been 00:00:42.32\00:00:45.70 written by this bodiless hand. 00:00:45.73\00:00:47.61 He is recognizing that his wise men are insufficient, 00:00:47.64\00:00:51.21 in a sense it seems like he is disconnected from his 00:00:51.25\00:00:54.78 own wise men. 00:00:54.81\00:00:55.78 He is in this party atmosphere, if you will. 00:00:55.79\00:00:58.12 He is disconnected from the Queen Mother, 00:00:58.16\00:01:00.50 she is not there with him, 00:01:00.53\00:01:01.50 excuse me from his Queen, she is not there with him. 00:01:01.51\00:01:03.19 He's disconnected from his wise men. 00:01:03.22\00:01:05.03 He seems like he doesn't really care. 00:01:05.07\00:01:06.81 He hasn't threaten the wise men, nor said anything. 00:01:06.84\00:01:09.26 He is bringing up to say, hey Daniel, my wise men can't 00:01:09.29\00:01:11.68 figure it out, maybe you can figure it out. 00:01:11.71\00:01:13.02 If you can figure that out it would be great. 00:01:13.05\00:01:14.29 It is a scary thing to me and I really just want to get 00:01:14.33\00:01:16.85 back to my party and not have to deal with these 00:01:16.89\00:01:18.96 scary images that are showing up on my wall. 00:01:19.00\00:01:21.00 I think it is important to recognize also the context 00:01:21.04\00:01:25.42 here, the history that is taking place here. 00:01:25.46\00:01:27.27 There is a strange security that he has because at this very 00:01:27.30\00:01:34.21 time, as this party is going 00:01:34.25\00:01:36.64 forward, Babylon is surrounded 00:01:36.68\00:01:39.42 by the Media Persian armies. 00:01:39.45\00:01:42.12 But the security that Belshazzar feels at this time makes him 00:01:42.15\00:01:46.61 rather casual even though he is terrified by what he is seeing. 00:01:46.65\00:01:51.08 He is rather casual about it and he feels secure because 00:01:51.11\00:01:54.01 the fact is Babylon is this great kingdom. 00:01:54.04\00:01:56.64 The greatest kingdom in the world. 00:01:56.67\00:01:57.77 The river Euphrates runs through the city. 00:01:57.81\00:02:00.89 There are food supplies to keep them going for years. 00:02:00.92\00:02:05.89 So he is just interested in continuing on with his 00:02:05.93\00:02:10.87 lifestyle of opulence and partying. 00:02:10.90\00:02:13.84 He just wants to know, Hey, what does this mean? 00:02:13.87\00:02:17.13 Well, he doesn't really want to know what this means. 00:02:17.17\00:02:20.32 When we see the interpretation unfold, his fear is 00:02:20.35\00:02:23.47 going to turn to terror. 00:02:23.51\00:02:25.09 At this point though, he is in the party atmosphere, 00:02:25.13\00:02:28.11 like you say, he feels like he's secure. 00:02:28.15\00:02:30.46 He has a false security and in that context it is 00:02:30.50\00:02:33.99 interesting because it plays out here in this verse 16. 00:02:34.02\00:02:38.35 "And I have heard of thee, that thou canst make" 00:02:38.38\00:02:42.20 "interpretations, and dissolve doubts: now at thou canst" 00:02:42.23\00:02:45.03 "read the writing and make known to me the interpretation" 00:02:45.07\00:02:47.83 "thereof, that I shall be clothed with scarlet," 00:02:47.86\00:02:50.33 "and have a chain of gold about thy neck, and shall be" 00:02:50.37\00:02:52.80 "the third ruler in the kingdom. " 00:02:52.83\00:02:54.57 This is a confirmation of his false security. 00:02:54.60\00:02:57.70 Basically he is offering Daniel a reward. 00:02:57.73\00:03:00.49 He is saying you can have a scarlet robe, 00:03:00.52\00:03:03.24 which was royalty. 00:03:03.27\00:03:04.48 You can have chains of gold around your neck. 00:03:04.52\00:03:06.82 You will be third ruler in the kingdom, he is the 00:03:06.86\00:03:10.69 second ruler because Nabonidus, his father is out on 00:03:10.72\00:03:13.90 a campaign, probably in hiding from the Media Persian 00:03:13.93\00:03:17.03 Army somewhere, and that was the son of Nebuchadnezzar, 00:03:17.07\00:03:20.13 or the ruler second down from Nebuchadnezzar. 00:03:20.17\00:03:22.07 So he was probably just made ruler in Babylon and that 00:03:22.11\00:03:26.33 is why they are having this celebration. 00:03:26.37\00:03:27.77 Daniel would be third after Nabonidus, himself, and yet in 00:03:27.81\00:03:31.69 a sense, we know in context of the story, that it is a 00:03:31.72\00:03:35.57 a completely false security. 00:03:35.60\00:03:36.66 It is obvious that he is not connected with reality here. 00:03:36.70\00:03:41.73 Not only does he offer rewards that are monetary rewards 00:03:41.77\00:03:46.77 to Daniel, but he tells him that you will be third 00:03:46.80\00:03:49.17 ruler in the kingdom. 00:03:49.21\00:03:50.48 He obviously expects that Babylon is going to continue 00:03:50.52\00:03:54.00 on as the prominent power and he has 00:03:54.04\00:03:57.81 no expectations of ruin. 00:03:57.85\00:04:00.13 Exactly so verse 17 it is interesting how Daniel answers. 00:04:00.16\00:04:03.34 Daniel answers, "then Daniel answered and said before the" 00:04:03.37\00:04:06.62 "king, Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give thy rewards" 00:04:06.66\00:04:10.33 "to another; yet I will read the writing unto the king," 00:04:10.37\00:04:14.01 "and I will make known to him the interpretation. " 00:04:14.05\00:04:16.49 What I really like about this is Daniel understands the 00:04:16.52\00:04:20.02 difference between temporal rewards and false security, 00:04:20.05\00:04:23.51 and the heavenly assurance that God has given us. 00:04:23.55\00:04:26.47 The assurance that we have of streets of gold. 00:04:26.51\00:04:29.37 Why would I want a necklace of gold when I am going to 00:04:29.40\00:04:32.69 be walking on streets of gold? 00:04:32.73\00:04:34.27 Why would I want to be third ruler in the kingdom, 00:04:34.30\00:04:37.12 when God has promised that I can sit on a throne with 00:04:37.16\00:04:39.94 Him and rule as a king and a priest? 00:04:39.97\00:04:42.58 Why would I want to wear a robe of scarlet, when I have 00:04:42.62\00:04:46.32 been promised a robe of righteousness? 00:04:46.36\00:04:49.02 Of purity, the Bible says, "though your sins be as" 00:04:49.06\00:04:51.02 "scarlet, they shall be white as snow. " 00:04:51.05\00:04:52.54 So Belshazzar is basically saying, Daniel you can have 00:04:52.57\00:04:55.25 a life of sinfulness, and you can be royalty, and to be 00:04:55.28\00:04:57.92 treated as royalty. 00:04:57.96\00:04:58.93 Daniel says, no thanks, I don't want the pleasure of 00:04:58.94\00:05:01.04 sin for a season. 00:05:01.07\00:05:02.04 I want the white robe of Christ's righteousness and live 00:05:02.05\00:05:04.95 with Him throughout all eternity. 00:05:04.99\00:05:06.63 No thanks, I don't want a chain of gold, I want to walk 00:05:06.66\00:05:08.62 on the streets of gold. 00:05:08.66\00:05:09.63 No thanks, I don't want to be third ruler in this kingdom 00:05:09.65\00:05:12.42 that is about to fall, I want to be ruler with Christ 00:05:12.46\00:05:15.20 for all eternity. 00:05:15.23\00:05:16.55 There is another study in contrast here James. 00:05:16.58\00:05:18.88 That is that the illusion, the appearance here is that 00:05:18.92\00:05:23.01 Belshazzar is the one in the adventitious position. 00:05:23.04\00:05:27.06 Daniel's a mere slave, Daniel is a Eunuch, Daniel is a captive 00:05:27.10\00:05:32.71 in a foreign land and yet Daniel rises head and 00:05:32.74\00:05:35.72 shoulders above every one in this kingdom. 00:05:35.75\00:05:38.79 His integrity, his faithfulness to God is what gives him 00:05:38.82\00:05:43.98 an excellent spirit, the Holy Spirit of God is upon him. 00:05:44.02\00:05:49.14 And within him and Daniel is the one who is 00:05:49.18\00:05:52.29 really secure here. 00:05:52.32\00:05:53.55 Daniel is the one who has no reason to fear. 00:05:53.58\00:05:55.91 Daniel knows that great political upheaval is underway. 00:05:55.95\00:06:00.41 There is to be a monumental shift of power from Babylon 00:06:00.44\00:06:04.78 to Media Persia and Daniel is sailing through this entire 00:06:04.81\00:06:09.11 process with absolute peace because he knows that 00:06:09.14\00:06:13.71 the kingdom that he has allegiance to, 00:06:13.74\00:06:16.40 is not a kingdom of this world. 00:06:16.44\00:06:18.84 So he recounts to Belshazzar the 00:06:18.88\00:06:22.03 history of Nebuchadnezzar, his 00:06:22.06\00:06:24.50 grandfather he says in verse 18 00:06:24.54\00:06:26.90 "... the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father a" 00:06:26.94\00:06:31.39 "kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honor:" 00:06:31.43\00:06:33.04 "and for the majesty that he gave him, included all people," 00:06:33.08\00:06:37.13 "nations, and languages, trembling before him, 00:06:37.17\00:06:39.42 and fearing before him" "whom he would he slew. " 00:06:39.45\00:06:41.67 We talked about that, that dictatorship, that aspect of 00:06:41.71\00:06:45.45 Nebuchadnezzar's character that wasn't so great. 00:06:45.49\00:06:47.54 "And whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he" 00:06:47.58\00:06:49.78 "set up; and whom he would he put down. " 00:06:49.81\00:06:50.78 "But when his heart was lifted up," verse 20, "and his" 00:06:50.81\00:06:54.01 "mind hardened in pride, he was taken from his 00:06:54.04\00:06:57.20 "throne, and his glory was taken from him: he was" 00:06:57.24\00:06:59.65 "driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made" 00:06:59.68\00:07:02.41 "like the beast," verse 21, "and his dwelling was with" 00:07:02.45\00:07:05.35 "the wild asses; they fed him with grass like oxen," 00:07:05.39\00:07:08.24 "and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; till he" 00:07:08.28\00:07:11.25 "knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men," 00:07:11.28\00:07:14.22 "and he appointed over it whomsoever he will. " 00:07:14.25\00:07:17.85 Now, as he summarizes the history of his grandfather, 00:07:17.88\00:07:22.36 Nebuchadnezzar, he then goes on to say, and you, 00:07:22.39\00:07:26.48 Belshazzar, verse 22, "you have not humbled your heart," 00:07:26.52\00:07:30.57 "even though you knew all this. " 00:07:30.61\00:07:33.51 Here is where we see the influence of alcohol. 00:07:33.55\00:07:35.50 Here's where we see the influence of drugs, he knew 00:07:35.53\00:07:37.73 that history, he knew it. 00:07:37.77\00:07:39.01 He probably sat on his grandfather's knee and 00:07:39.04\00:07:41.35 Nebuchadnezzar recounted it to him because 00:07:41.38\00:07:43.71 Nebuchadnezzar recounted it to all the nation. 00:07:43.74\00:07:46.00 Nebuchadnezzar was interested in being a witness for God. 00:07:46.04\00:07:49.48 His heart had been converted and changed and transformed 00:07:49.52\00:07:52.93 by the Spirit of God. 00:07:52.97\00:07:54.17 You knew all this, verse 23, "you lifted up thyself" 00:07:54.21\00:07:57.32 "against the Lord of heaven, and they brought the" 00:07:57.35\00:07:59.90 "vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy 00:07:59.93\00:08:02.35 lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine" 00:08:02.38\00:08:04.70 "in them; and thou hast praised the gods a silver, and" 00:08:04.74\00:08:07.36 "gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not," 00:08:07.39\00:08:11.13 "nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath" 00:08:11.16\00:08:15.37 "is, and whose are all thy ways, has thou not glorified:" 00:08:15.41\00:08:19.59 That is a powerful statement there. 00:08:19.62\00:08:20.80 This is the influence of self 00:08:20.83\00:08:23.40 exaltation, the influence of 00:08:23.44\00:08:25.83 of arrogance upon Belshazzar's 00:08:25.86\00:08:27.68 mind and heart has blinded 00:08:27.72\00:08:29.50 him to his need. 00:08:29.53\00:08:30.77 And to the reality of the fact 00:08:30.81\00:08:32.98 in God we move and have our 00:08:33.02\00:08:34.86 being, I mean think about that 00:08:34.90\00:08:36.51 in the context of the gospel. 00:08:36.54\00:08:38.09 It is amazing that every one of us, not just Belshazzar. 00:08:38.12\00:08:41.89 Every single human being; man, woman, and child utterly 00:08:41.93\00:08:45.66 dependent on God for every breath that we take. 00:08:45.70\00:08:49.24 He is the One, according to the apostle Paul, 00:08:49.28\00:08:52.75 who by His mighty power sustains and holds together 00:08:52.79\00:08:56.19 all things and everything by His power consists. 00:08:56.23\00:08:59.56 If God were to back up from us, from us as individuals, 00:08:59.60\00:09:02.95 from our world, we would cease to exist. 00:09:02.98\00:09:04.67 There is a strong deception upon Belshazzar's mind. 00:09:04.70\00:09:08.91 He has no sense of reality, he is self-assured and he's 00:09:08.94\00:09:13.11 absolutely settled into a false security. 00:09:13.14\00:09:15.74 He is about to be awakened here as the words appear on 00:09:15.78\00:09:19.95 the wall you are judged, you are weighed, 00:09:19.99\00:09:23.94 you are found wanting, your kingdom is now taken from you 00:09:23.98\00:09:28.22 is the pronouncement. 00:09:28.26\00:09:29.39 Here's a type of a final judgment that all human beings 00:09:29.42\00:09:34.79 will be faced with. 00:09:34.83\00:09:36.10 It is so different, isn't it from what Paul says in 00:09:36.13\00:09:38.37 Acts 17 to the Greeks and all of the philosophers who in 00:09:38.41\00:09:42.33 ignorance don't realize that in God they have their life, 00:09:42.36\00:09:46.25 and move and have their being. 00:09:46.29\00:09:47.26 Daniel is bringing out the same truth here to Belshazzar. 00:09:47.27\00:09:50.87 In God we live and move and have our being. 00:09:50.91\00:09:52.89 When Paul speaks to these unbelievers in Athens, 00:09:52.92\00:09:56.91 he is speaking to people who are ignorantly were 00:09:56.94\00:10:00.42 worshiping God and they did know who He was. 00:10:00.46\00:10:03.87 Who are ignorant of the fact that God was sustaining 00:10:03.91\00:10:06.54 their very life. 00:10:06.58\00:10:07.70 But Belshazzar on the other hand, should not have been 00:10:07.74\00:10:09.93 ignorant of this, he knew this. 00:10:09.97\00:10:11.44 He knew better, you know the history and these 00:10:11.47\00:10:14.30 people didn't know. 00:10:14.34\00:10:15.32 In Acts 17 the outcome is different, 00:10:15.36\00:10:16.97 God winks at your ignorance. 00:10:17.00\00:10:18.52 In Daniel Chapter 5, the outcome is different because 00:10:18.56\00:10:22.05 he knows better than to be worshiping gold, silver, 00:10:22.09\00:10:25.41 and all of these different idols, he knows better than 00:10:25.44\00:10:28.73 to be turning away from the God, Who has been 00:10:28.76\00:10:30.77 sustaining his life. 00:10:30.81\00:10:32.08 In Chapter 5 of Daniel James, it is a sad Chapter and 00:10:32.11\00:10:35.82 closes on a sad note. 00:10:35.86\00:10:37.17 The gospel has been proclaimed up to this point. 00:10:37.20\00:10:41.58 Nebuchadnezzar has sent out 00:10:41.61\00:10:43.32 a letter to all the nations 00:10:43.36\00:10:44.77 and kingdoms of the world 00:10:44.80\00:10:46.19 giving his testimony of God's 00:10:46.22\00:10:47.85 grace and power and how God 00:10:47.88\00:10:49.28 has transformed his life. 00:10:49.32\00:10:50.65 His grandson, on the other hand, has hardened himself 00:10:50.69\00:10:53.56 against the Lord and against the knowledge of God's 00:10:53.60\00:10:56.44 grace and the history of his grandfather. 00:10:56.47\00:10:58.07 The Chapter closes with a sad note that Belshazzar, 00:10:58.11\00:11:02.01 the king of the Chaldeans was slain and the kingdom 00:11:02.05\00:11:06.00 was given over to the Medes, Darius becomes the king. 00:11:06.04\00:11:09.96 The kingdom of Babylon falls. 00:11:09.99\00:11:12.98 That is a sad history, but it is a powerful commentary 00:11:13.01\00:11:17.02 for each one of us Ty. 00:11:17.05\00:11:18.02 We need to recognize that it is important for us not 00:11:18.03\00:11:21.97 to pursue or follow the choices that Belshazzar made. 00:11:22.01\00:11:25.24 It is our prayer and our hope that you would choose 00:11:25.28\00:11:28.48 to acknowledge God's work in your life. 00:11:28.51\00:11:30.56 His sustaining grace and His favor towards you and 00:11:30.60\00:11:34.21 His desire to see you in the kingdom. 00:11:34.25\00:11:36.34 If you'll look at the history of how He has led you, 00:11:36.37\00:11:38.88 and you would not turn away from Him to gods of gold and 00:11:38.91\00:11:41.47 silver and to drugs but that you would turn your heart 00:11:41.51\00:11:44.29 over to Him and be saved eternally in His kingdom. 00:11:44.33\00:11:47.08
