Welcome friends to Books of the Book! 00:00:21.57\00:00:23.99 We are so glad you joined us 00:00:24.03\00:00:25.55 for study of the book of Daniel. 00:00:25.58\00:00:27.05 I'm Ty Gibson and with me is my 00:00:27.08\00:00:28.51 co-host James Rafferty. 00:00:28.54\00:00:29.81 It is good to be here Ty and 00:00:29.84\00:00:31.36 we are in Daniel Chapter 5. 00:00:31.40\00:00:32.85 We are dealing here with another 00:00:32.88\00:00:34.93 Chapter in the experience and 00:00:34.96\00:00:37.18 the life of a Babylonian ruler. 00:00:37.21\00:00:39.63 This time it is Belshazzar. 00:00:39.66\00:00:42.01 This chapter is really interesting because it dwells on 00:00:42.04\00:00:45.49 a different aspect of God's character. 00:00:45.53\00:00:47.54 God is a God of love and His love, that loving aspect 00:00:47.57\00:00:51.59 of God's character, the foundation of who He is, of His 00:00:51.63\00:00:55.61 Government is manifested in two different ways. 00:00:55.65\00:00:58.51 In mercy and in Justice. 00:00:58.54\00:01:00.71 Mercy and justice seemed to be opposites, but they come 00:01:00.74\00:01:03.49 together to form that character of love. 00:01:03.53\00:01:06.47 The foundational principle of love that is the essence 00:01:06.50\00:01:09.15 of who God is. 00:01:09.18\00:01:10.27 Daniel Chapter 5 James, I think is a study in contrast 00:01:10.30\00:01:14.39 in that sense. 00:01:14.43\00:01:15.53 We see in Chapter 4, the previous chapters of the book 00:01:15.57\00:01:20.18 of Daniel, the gradual, but finally radical conversion 00:01:20.21\00:01:24.40 of King Nebuchadnezzar as he comes under the influence 00:01:24.44\00:01:28.60 of God's mercy and grace. 00:01:28.63\00:01:30.50 Then we come to Chapter 5 and we have this contrast with 00:01:30.54\00:01:34.72 his son, or actually his grandson Belshazzar, who is 00:01:34.75\00:01:39.65 himself a witness to God's mercy, to God's grace. 00:01:39.69\00:01:44.52 He saw, knows the history of his grandfather, Nebuchadnezzar. 00:01:44.55\00:01:49.31 He knows God's influence, His mercy, His grace. 00:01:49.34\00:01:52.36 He knows it intellectually as a witness to it. 00:01:52.40\00:01:57.24 Yet Belshazzar does not respond to God's mercy, as did 00:01:57.28\00:02:01.43 Nebuchadnezzar, but in fact responds in such a way that 00:02:01.47\00:02:05.59 ultimately works his ruined. 00:02:05.62\00:02:06.95 Yes, and one of the reason of this is found right here 00:02:06.99\00:02:09.51 in the opening verses, Daniel 5:1. 00:02:09.54\00:02:12.42 "Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand" 00:02:12.46\00:02:15.84 "of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand. " 00:02:15.88\00:02:19.85 And it says in verse 2, "Belshazzar, while he tasted" 00:02:19.88\00:02:23.79 "the wine, commanded to bring the Golden and Silver vessels" 00:02:23.82\00:02:27.14 "which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out" 00:02:27.17\00:02:30.13 "of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king," 00:02:30.17\00:02:32.95 "and his princes, he is wives, and his concubines," 00:02:32.98\00:02:35.72 "might drink therein. " 00:02:35.76\00:02:37.11 It's no secret James, everybody knows that alcohol 00:02:37.14\00:02:41.25 impairs judgment. 00:02:41.28\00:02:42.95 The language here is, "while he tasted the wine. " 00:02:42.98\00:02:47.44 That is that Belshazzar, while under the influence of 00:02:47.47\00:02:51.76 alcohol, while under the influence of this massive party 00:02:51.79\00:02:56.04 he is holding with just drunkenness at every turn. 00:02:56.08\00:03:00.41 He is under the influence of alcohol and his judgment 00:03:00.45\00:03:04.21 is severely impaired and he begins to make decisions 00:03:04.25\00:03:08.59 that are in a sense, not even in a sense, directly 00:03:08.62\00:03:12.69 defining the God of heaven that he has witness as an 00:03:12.73\00:03:16.76 influence in Nebuchadnezzar's life. 00:03:16.80\00:03:18.66 He defines the God of heaven and enters into a state 00:03:18.70\00:03:22.69 of mind and a series of actions that are disrespectful 00:03:22.72\00:03:26.70 and irreverent and takes the vessels of the House of God, 00:03:26.74\00:03:30.08 the temple of God in Jerusalem, and he makes them a part 00:03:30.11\00:03:33.41 of his drunken feast. 00:03:33.45\00:03:34.88 Absolutely and what is interesting Ty, is the principal 00:03:34.91\00:03:38.41 we find in the Bible. 00:03:38.45\00:03:39.54 In the book of Proverbs we are 00:03:39.57\00:03:42.14 warned against partaking of 00:03:42.18\00:03:44.68 alcoholic drinks, alcoholic beverages. 00:03:44.71\00:03:47.28 Not even to look upon wine when it ferments, or changes, 00:03:47.31\00:03:50.79 because the influence that it has upon us tends in the 00:03:50.83\00:03:53.76 wrong direction and I am sure a lot of people out there 00:03:53.79\00:03:56.69 listening, myself included, who can point to the 00:03:56.73\00:03:59.67 influence of alcohol, the influence of drugs and say 00:03:59.71\00:04:02.84 I made decisions in my life, I took actions in my life 00:04:02.88\00:04:05.98 that were detrimental. 00:04:06.01\00:04:07.48 I possibly never recovered from, but they have taken my 00:04:07.51\00:04:10.24 life in a direction that I never wanted or intended. 00:04:10.28\00:04:13.49 If I wouldn't been under the influence of those drugs or 00:04:13.52\00:04:16.88 alcohol, I would have gone in a completely different 00:04:16.91\00:04:19.91 direction, it's ruined my life, it's impaired me. 00:04:19.94\00:04:23.15 I want to say to all those people right now that it 00:04:23.19\00:04:26.18 doesn't mean that God cannot recover you from that. 00:04:26.22\00:04:28.87 That is why it is so important for us to recognize, 00:04:28.90\00:04:31.75 that yes there is a place where we could make decisions 00:04:31.78\00:04:34.60 that bring us to a destiny that is not in harmony 00:04:34.63\00:04:37.61 with God's will a destiny of being lost which is what we are 00:04:37.65\00:04:40.25 going to find here with Belshazzar. 00:04:40.28\00:04:41.51 There is also a place for God can recover us. 00:04:41.54\00:04:44.69 God longs to recover us from the decisions we made while 00:04:44.72\00:04:48.11 under the influence of these drugs. 00:04:48.15\00:04:50.40 So we have here in Daniel 00:04:50.43\00:04:52.39 Chapter 5 a studying contrast 00:04:52.43\00:04:54.53 between the conversion of 00:04:54.57\00:04:56.61 Nebuchadnezzar and now the very clear rebellion, 00:04:56.64\00:05:01.46 and irreverence of Belshazzar. 00:05:01.50\00:05:04.35 And we have here a clear indication or contrast between 00:05:04.38\00:05:08.98 the affect of God's mercy and now the necessity of God 00:05:09.02\00:05:13.58 responding in justice. 00:05:13.62\00:05:15.89 So as Belshazzar is engaged in this drunken feast, as he 00:05:15.92\00:05:19.97 enters in to these irreverent actions shaking as it were, 00:05:20.00\00:05:24.01 his fist at the God of heaven, suddenly something 00:05:24.04\00:05:26.92 astounding takes place. 00:05:26.95\00:05:28.80 In verse 5, "in the same hour the finger of a man's hand" 00:05:28.84\00:05:33.75 "appeared and wrote opposite the lamp stand, on the" 00:05:33.78\00:05:37.60 "plaster of a wall of the king's palace; and the king" 00:05:37.63\00:05:41.41 "saw the part of the man's hand that wrote. " 00:05:41.45\00:05:44.72 Amazing, just out of nowhere, no doubt under the 00:05:44.76\00:05:47.87 influence of alcohol, he is doing a double take and 00:05:47.90\00:05:50.97 wondering is this real what I am witnessing? 00:05:51.01\00:05:54.16 But obviously he is not the only person who has seen it. 00:05:54.20\00:05:57.54 There are a thousand of his guests here at this feast. 00:05:57.58\00:06:01.32 They are all witnessing this blood curdling, haunting 00:06:01.35\00:06:05.06 thing that is taking place. 00:06:05.09\00:06:06.56 Imagine what you would feel, what I would feel, if all 00:06:06.59\00:06:10.88 of a sudden out of nowhere a hand, a bodiless hand begins 00:06:10.92\00:06:15.18 writing across the wall? 00:06:15.21\00:06:16.85 And he is filled with fear, and one of the reasons why 00:06:16.88\00:06:20.60 he is so filled with fear is because he does not 00:06:20.64\00:06:23.43 understand what the writing means. 00:06:23.47\00:06:25.31 So here comes this bodiless hand and it is writing these 00:06:25.34\00:06:28.30 words ME'- NE, ME'- NE, TE'- KEL, U-PHAR'- SIN 00:06:28.34\00:06:31.15 and he is trying to understand. 00:06:31.18\00:06:32.82 He has no understanding of what these words actually mean. 00:06:32.85\00:06:35.71 He knows that it is significant. 00:06:35.74\00:06:37.08 This is a supernatural event that is taking place. 00:06:37.11\00:06:40.94 Probably his conscious is awakened at that moment and 00:06:40.97\00:06:44.76 he is brought to sobriety in a second. 00:06:44.79\00:06:48.38 He is wondering what does this mean, it can't be 00:06:48.41\00:06:51.51 a positive thing, it must be fearful foreboding of the 00:06:51.55\00:06:54.61 future, but What does it all mean? 00:06:54.64\00:06:56.80 There's nothing as scary, nothing is fearful as not 00:06:56.83\00:07:00.81 understanding what the future holds. 00:07:00.84\00:07:02.80 He is so terrified in fact, that verse 6 of Daniel 00:07:02.83\00:07:07.62 Chapter 5 says, "... the joints of his hips were loosened. " 00:07:07.65\00:07:13.14 Another version says that his loins were loosened. 00:07:13.18\00:07:17.56 Some commentators say that maybe he became incontinent 00:07:17.59\00:07:21.94 at this point because he was so afraid. 00:07:21.98\00:07:23.45 So it says they are in verse 6, 00:07:23.48\00:07:25.51 "and his knees knocked against each other. " 00:07:25.55\00:07:28.13 I mean this guy was terrified. 00:07:28.16\00:07:30.40 Sin has that affect on us. 00:07:30.43\00:07:32.60 When the consciences heavy laden with guilt and 00:07:32.63\00:07:36.00 condemnation, somewhere in our hearts we know that we 00:07:36.03\00:07:40.16 are wrong and are walking contrary to the will of God. 00:07:40.19\00:07:44.62 That weight of guilt upon our conscience, it has the 00:07:44.65\00:07:48.35 potential to produce terror and fear in us when we 00:07:48.39\00:07:52.05 finally come face to face with the truth. 00:07:52.09\00:07:54.97 As you say that his conscious, to some degree, 00:07:55.01\00:07:57.17 is awakened right now and he knows he's in trouble. 00:07:57.21\00:08:00.17 He knows in his heart that something is taking place 00:08:00.20\00:08:03.13 there that is not in his favor. 00:08:03.16\00:08:04.64 It is really interesting because at this point, 00:08:04.68\00:08:06.65 Belshazzar wants to understand what the writing is. 00:08:06.68\00:08:10.51 There are probably many times in our lives, and many 00:08:10.55\00:08:13.69 times in the lives of our viewers, when we are not 00:08:13.73\00:08:16.80 interested in knowing what God has to say about our future. 00:08:16.83\00:08:19.42 We are not interested in understanding the prophecy. 00:08:19.46\00:08:22.39 Or understand this mysterious writing that comes from 00:08:22.42\00:08:25.23 heaven as we understand now, in the context of this 00:08:25.27\00:08:28.16 prophecy of this book, that this writing is from God. 00:08:28.20\00:08:31.06 It is a warning from God. 00:08:31.09\00:08:32.26 We are not interested and that is why it is so important 00:08:32.29\00:08:35.35 for us to recognize. 00:08:35.38\00:08:36.49 You see a lot of people think 00:08:36.53\00:08:37.71 that the prophecy in the 00:08:37.75\00:08:39.39 Bible is all doom and gloom. 00:08:39.42\00:08:41.51 It is written to make us afraid. 00:08:41.54\00:08:43.56 The truth of the matter is it is uncertainty about the 00:08:43.60\00:08:47.67 future, it is lacking in knowledge, and lacking the 00:08:47.71\00:08:51.12 understanding we need to be afraid of. 00:08:51.16\00:08:53.23 Belshazzar story is bringing this out. 00:08:53.26\00:08:55.19 God has not given us prophecy to scare us. 00:08:55.22\00:08:57.08 God has revealed prophecy to prepare us for what is ahead. 00:08:57.12\00:09:00.44 You look at our situation in the world today at any time 00:09:00.48\00:09:03.13 and you think we don't know what is going to happen. 00:09:03.16\00:09:05.79 We do not know what the economic future of this country, 00:09:05.82\00:09:08.42 of the world is and that is scary. 00:09:08.45\00:09:10.12 To be able to see what the future holds even if it isn't 00:09:10.16\00:09:13.60 the best, it gives a little bit of peace because it gives 00:09:13.63\00:09:17.73 us a sense of what we need to do in order to prepare. 00:09:17.77\00:09:21.83 Even if it is the worst, we can do something to prepare 00:09:21.87\00:09:25.36 for it, not knowing it all is even scarier. 00:09:25.40\00:09:28.01 That is why when the king seeks for the interpretation and 00:09:28.05\00:09:31.81 can't find one, it says verse 9, "then was king Belshazzar" 00:09:31.84\00:09:35.28 "greatly troubled, and his countenance was changed in him," 00:09:35.31\00:09:38.71 "and his lords were astonished. " 00:09:38.74\00:09:39.88 In other words, as fearful and afraid as he was the first 00:09:39.91\00:09:43.20 time, he was even more afraid when nobody could be found 00:09:43.23\00:09:46.48 to interpret this writing. 00:09:46.52\00:09:49.90 Just like his grandfather before him, Nebuchadnezzar, 00:09:49.94\00:09:53.33 he calls in the wise men, 00:09:53.37\00:09:55.15 the astrologers and they cannot 00:09:55.19\00:09:56.72 give the interpretation and 00:09:56.76\00:09:58.36 somehow he had to know the 00:09:58.39\00:09:59.80 history, he had to know the 00:09:59.84\00:10:01.17 history, but somehow he doesn't even think of Daniel. 00:10:01.21\00:10:06.27 His queen comes to him and says there is a man, verse 11 00:10:06.31\00:10:11.53 "there is a man in your kingdom, in whom is the Spirit" 00:10:11.57\00:10:16.76 "of the holy God;" 00:10:16.80\00:10:18.09 then the queen calls his attention to Daniel. 00:10:18.12\00:10:20.55 Immediately Daniel, of course, is called upon and 00:10:20.58\00:10:22.92 brought in before the king. 00:10:22.96\00:10:25.28 The king begins pleading with Daniel for an interpretation 00:10:25.31\00:10:29.57 of the dream, and as the interpretation comes to the 00:10:29.60\00:10:32.82 king it is not what he wants to hear. 00:10:32.86\00:10:35.88 Obviously, it says in verse 10, that the queen was 00:10:35.92\00:10:39.73 not in the banquet. 00:10:39.77\00:10:40.74 "Now the queen by reason of the words in the king and" 00:10:40.75\00:10:43.63 "his lords come into the banquet house. " 00:10:43.66\00:10:45.60 So it appears that she was not under the influence of 00:10:45.63\00:10:48.73 these drugs of alcohol and the party atmosphere. 00:10:48.76\00:10:51.73 She was not a part of that so she can still recollect, 00:10:51.77\00:10:55.28 she's still can remember, she can pinpoint to the king this 00:10:55.31\00:10:59.40 man named Daniel, when the king is out of his senses, 00:10:59.44\00:11:02.32 he has lost his senses. 00:11:02.36\00:11:03.33 He knows about Daniel, he knows the history but he has 00:11:03.36\00:11:06.18 forgotten, and this is the influence drugs 00:11:06.22\00:11:07.90 can have upon us. 00:11:07.93\00:11:08.90 He has forgotten about everything that God has wrought. 00:11:08.91\00:11:11.00 He is forgot everything that God has done. 00:11:11.04\00:11:12.23 He should know, but he doesn't know. 00:11:12.27\00:11:14.15 I love the way she identifies Daniel. 00:11:14.18\00:11:15.99 He has identified by the same terminology repeatedly 00:11:16.03\00:11:19.31 throughout the story with Nebuchadnezzar 00:11:19.34\00:11:21.59 and now with Belshazzar. 00:11:21.62\00:11:23.18 This is the one in whom is the Spirit of the holy God. 00:11:23.21\00:11:28.06 Wouldn't that be a incredible if in our daily lives and 00:11:28.09\00:11:32.90 our interactions with people who don't know and 00:11:32.93\00:11:36.48 necessarily believe in the Lord, wouldn't it be great 00:11:36.52\00:11:39.90 if we were living in such a way, with integrity, 00:11:39.94\00:11:44.06 as Daniel did, purposing in our hearts not to 00:11:44.10\00:11:48.16 defile ourselves, as Daniel purposed in his heart, 00:11:48.19\00:11:50.60 but walking in integrity. 00:11:50.63\00:11:52.16 Not just walk in integrity in any haughty religious, 00:11:52.20\00:11:56.61 spiritually superior sense because we have seen in 00:11:56.64\00:12:00.94 previous studies James, Daniel is a humble man who is 00:12:00.98\00:12:04.53 not filled with resentment and bitterness for the fact 00:12:04.56\00:12:08.08 that he has been taken as a slave into Babylon. 00:12:08.11\00:12:11.34 Then he was made a Eunuch, made to serve the king. 00:12:11.37\00:12:15.17 Daniel, in the first time we encounter his response 00:12:15.20\00:12:18.87 to his enemies, is Lord don't destroy the wise men. 00:12:18.91\00:12:22.12 King Nebuchadnezzar don't destroy the wise men. 00:12:22.16\00:12:25.31 Then again later on he is concerned that Nebuchadnezzar 00:12:25.34\00:12:29.27 see the truth but at the same time he is reluctant to 00:12:29.31\00:12:32.39 tell him the whole truth because he knows it is not 00:12:32.42\00:12:35.46 what Nebuchadnezzar wants to hear. 00:12:35.50\00:12:37.70 Here Daniel has built a reputation. 00:12:37.74\00:12:39.88 His reputation is, this is the one in whom, 00:12:39.91\00:12:42.66 this is a man in whom is the Spirit of the holy God. 00:12:42.69\00:12:45.56 Verse 12, "for as much as an excellent spirit. " 00:12:45.59\00:12:47.88 An excellent spirit, What is an excellent spirit? 00:12:47.92\00:12:50.14 Each just far surpasses the spirit of a normal person. 00:12:50.18\00:12:53.72 "And knowledge, and understanding, interpreting" 00:12:53.75\00:12:55.88 "of dreams, and showing of hard sentences, and dissolving " 00:12:55.91\00:12:59.08 "of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king" 00:12:59.11\00:13:02.25 "named Belshazzar: now let Daniel be called," 00:13:02.28\00:13:05.25 "and he will show the interpretation. " 00:13:05.29\00:13:07.42 I love that, this woman is speaking as someone who is 00:13:07.46\00:13:10.67 convicted, someone who believes 00:13:10.71\00:13:12.51 in Daniel, believes in Daniel's 00:13:12.54\00:13:14.46 God and perhaps that is why she 00:13:14.50\00:13:16.15 was not part of this banquet. 00:13:16.19\00:13:17.77 Part of this party, part of coming under the influence 00:13:17.81\00:13:21.33 of these lords and these rulers who were under the influence 00:13:21.37\00:13:24.84 of alcohol and worshiping the gods of gold and silver 00:13:24.87\00:13:27.32 and brass and iron and wood and stone. 00:13:27.36\00:13:29.15 They cannot see, they cannot hear, and of course we do 00:13:29.19\00:13:33.14 the same today, we worship gold and idols, and worship silver. 00:13:33.17\00:13:36.31 We worship metal, we worship our cars, we worship our 00:13:36.35\00:13:39.26 Oscars and worship our trophies, all the things of this world. 00:13:39.30\00:13:43.10 The sports and the celebrities and technology and in 00:13:43.14\00:13:47.49 a sense we are just out of our senses as was Belshazzar 00:13:47.53\00:13:51.85 and his lords and his princes. 00:13:51.89\00:13:53.65 But this woman is within reason. 00:13:53.68\00:13:55.35 She has got her senses about her 00:13:55.39\00:13:56.98 She is intelligent and she is thinking, she is seeing Spirit, 00:13:57.02\00:14:00.45 she is seeing what is in Daniel and the true 00:14:00.48\00:14:03.45 understanding and knowledge and so she is separated 00:14:03.48\00:14:06.01 from the banquet and she is now trying to bring Belshazzar to 00:14:06.04\00:14:09.06 understand and to seek for this man named Daniel. 00:14:09.10\00:14:11.98 There is another lesson here James, that all of us need 00:14:12.02\00:14:14.35 to consider and that is if we conduct ourselves in 00:14:14.39\00:14:18.82 integrity and in mercy, even though we are believers, 00:14:18.85\00:14:23.25 all of us are surrounded with people who don't 00:14:23.28\00:14:25.85 necessarily believe. 00:14:25.88\00:14:27.20 Wouldn't it be great, if when they come to a time of need, 00:14:27.24\00:14:31.10 when they realize their need for the Lord, 00:14:31.13\00:14:33.78 that they would immediately think to call upon that 00:14:33.82\00:14:37.68 individual, that person, this individual, 00:14:37.71\00:14:40.82 because there is an excellent spirit in them and we 00:14:40.86\00:14:43.56 have witnessed in them something that attracts us. 00:14:43.60\00:14:46.54 We know they may have the answer and may be able to 00:14:46.58\00:14:49.49 direct us to the right source of 00:14:49.52\00:14:51.74 understanding and knowledge. 00:14:51.78\00:14:53.93 That is what we need friends, we need to conduct 00:14:53.96\00:14:56.96 ourselves in such a way, as believers, 00:14:56.99\00:14:59.80 that people know that they can turn to us in their times 00:14:59.83\00:15:03.20 of need and struggle and pain and don't need to be 00:15:03.24\00:15:06.51 afraid to turn to us for fear of condemnation. 00:15:06.55\00:15:10.05 As Chapter 5 of Daniel continues to unfold, 00:15:10.08\00:15:13.51 we are going to see that Belshazzar does not respond 00:15:13.54\00:15:17.30 in an appropriate way to the vision that God gives 00:15:17.33\00:15:21.05 to the hand writing on the wall. 00:15:21.09\00:15:22.54 We are going to see here also that God is good, 00:15:22.58\00:15:26.04 God is merciful and He continues to have a plan that 00:15:26.08\00:15:29.89 we want ourselves to play into. 00:15:29.92\00:15:31.83 So stay with us and we will be right back 00:15:31.87\00:15:33.57 in just a moment. 00:15:33.60\00:15:34.86
