Hello friends and welcome back to our study of Daniel 00:00:01.98\00:00:03.08 Chapter 4 and we are actually in verse 22. 00:00:03.11\00:00:05.14 Where Daniel makes this 00:00:05.17\00:00:06.51 declaration concerning this 00:00:06.54\00:00:07.90 dream and its interpretation 00:00:07.94\00:00:09.34 that Nebuchadnezzar has had. 00:00:09.38\00:00:10.71 "It is thou O King," we have seen here Ty, Daniel has been 00:00:10.75\00:00:15.78 reluctant to give the interpretation of this dream to 00:00:15.81\00:00:19.39 Nebuchadnezzar because he is wanting to reach the heart 00:00:19.42\00:00:22.07 of the King and he knows that it's going to be difficult 00:00:22.10\00:00:24.71 for the king to receive this assessment of himself. 00:00:24.75\00:00:27.78 He is going to be this mighty tree that is cut down by 00:00:27.81\00:00:30.70 his watchers, he is going to be a mighty kingdom that is 00:00:30.74\00:00:33.74 going to lose all of his respect and all in his honor for 00:00:33.77\00:00:36.53 seven years, he is going to be like a wild man eating 00:00:36.56\00:00:39.28 grass in the field. 00:00:39.32\00:00:41.62 So he is reluctant and at the same time he knows God wants 00:00:41.65\00:00:46.51 him to give the interpretation to Nebuchadnezzar. 00:00:46.54\00:00:48.91 This is the way that Nebuchadnezzar's heart and 00:00:48.95\00:00:51.28 life is going to be changed. 00:00:51.31\00:00:52.68 This is God's will for Nebuchadnezzar. 00:00:52.72\00:00:54.22 Daniel as a man of God and so Daniel is reluctantly 00:00:54.25\00:00:57.53 wanting to make sure that he follows through with 00:00:57.56\00:01:00.80 God's will. 00:01:00.84\00:01:01.86 Daniel tells him, reluctantly, but clearly and directly, 00:01:01.89\00:01:06.15 King Nebuchadnezzar the vision 00:01:06.18\00:01:08.49 you had of this great tree with 00:01:08.53\00:01:11.21 fruit and its branches reaching 00:01:11.25\00:01:13.86 out to shade the earth and all who are under it is going 00:01:13.89\00:01:16.95 to be cut down. 00:01:16.99\00:01:17.96 This is you, your kingdom is going to be cut down and 00:01:17.97\00:01:21.38 taken from you, but it is amazing that there is still, 00:01:21.42\00:01:25.65 here even a word of mercy and assurance to Nebuchadnezzar. 00:01:25.69\00:01:29.82 He says, but Nebuchadnezzar listen, God has an objective, 00:01:29.85\00:01:33.95 he has a goal for you. 00:01:33.99\00:01:35.55 He is leading you, you are a hard nut to crack 00:01:35.58\00:01:37.80 Nebuchadnezzar but God is reaching into your heart and 00:01:37.84\00:01:41.94 your kingdom will be assured to you when you come to the 00:01:41.98\00:01:46.05 realization that the most high God rules 00:01:46.08\00:01:50.08 in the affairs of men. 00:01:50.12\00:01:52.03 God is eager to reach your heart and He assures you 00:01:52.06\00:01:54.94 the kingdom after you have gone through this experience. 00:01:54.97\00:01:57.23 It is amazing that Daniel, then, actually reaches 00:01:57.27\00:02:01.58 further and says, Nebuchadnezzar listen, 00:02:01.61\00:02:04.50 I have some counsel for you. 00:02:04.53\00:02:06.02 Here's what I want you to do. 00:02:06.06\00:02:07.48 I want you to listen carefully Nebuchadnezzar, 00:02:07.51\00:02:09.95 this is what you need to do, 00:02:09.98\00:02:10.99 verse 27, "you need to break off your sins by righteous 00:02:11.02\00:02:15.10 living and break off your iniquities by showing mercy 00:02:15.13\00:02:19.50 to the poor, perhaps there may be a lengthening of 00:02:19.53\00:02:23.87 your prosperity. " 00:02:23.90\00:02:26.18 Daniel doesn't want to Nebuchadnezzar to experience 00:02:26.21\00:02:28.47 this horrific judgment that the dream says is going to come 00:02:28.51\00:02:32.96 upon him and he is given good council here. 00:02:32.99\00:02:35.12 Come to your senses. 00:02:35.16\00:02:36.52 In fact he is getting council that is the exact opposite 00:02:36.55\00:02:39.17 of what it means to live in pride. 00:02:39.21\00:02:41.14 Pride lives for self. 00:02:41.18\00:02:42.69 Pride glorifies self. 00:02:42.72\00:02:44.10 Pride embellishes self. 00:02:44.13\00:02:45.44 Pride builds up and strengthens self's kingdom. 00:02:45.47\00:02:48.49 What happens when you live for self, and you embellished 00:02:48.52\00:02:52.00 self is that you neglect others. 00:02:52.03\00:02:53.25 Specifically, as the king you neglect the poor. 00:02:53.28\00:02:55.96 He has, in order to embellish and lift up and exalt himself, 00:02:56.00\00:03:00.03 he has neglected to take care of the poor and needy 00:03:00.06\00:03:02.34 that are around him in the world. 00:03:02.38\00:03:03.66 So basically what Daniel is saying is that Nebuchadnezzar 00:03:03.69\00:03:06.95 is the problem, your pride has made you selfish. 00:03:06.99\00:03:10.69 Selfishness is the essence of sin. 00:03:10.72\00:03:13.62 You can break away from the selfishness by extending 00:03:13.66\00:03:17.42 mercy to those around you. 00:03:17.46\00:03:18.81 And he does, it seems like it works for awhile. 00:03:18.84\00:03:21.15 Nebuchadnezzar for a year lives in tranquility and it 00:03:21.18\00:03:25.06 seems like he follows Daniel's advice, Daniels council. 00:03:25.10\00:03:29.07 To some degree, but then there is obviously a very clear 00:03:29.10\00:03:32.83 indication that even to this point, after receiving his 00:03:32.86\00:03:36.55 second vision, clear interpretations from Daniel, 00:03:36.59\00:03:39.77 God's prophet, but still Nebuchadnezzar is not converted 00:03:39.81\00:03:44.19 at the depths of his heart and he says in verse 30. 00:03:44.23\00:03:47.01 He is walking around, it is like a year later after 00:03:47.05\00:03:49.80 receiving the vision and the interpretation. 00:03:49.83\00:03:51.70 "The king spoke and he said is not this great Babylon 00:03:51.74\00:03:56.74 that I have built for a royal dwelling, by my mighty power, 00:03:56.77\00:04:02.10 and for the honor of my Majesty?" 00:04:02.14\00:04:04.23 Isn't that what is going on here? 00:04:04.26\00:04:06.29 Isn't that what he is thinking in his mind? 00:04:06.32\00:04:07.55 I did this and I am it, I'm the king and I did all of 00:04:07.58\00:04:11.86 this for my glory. 00:04:11.89\00:04:13.04 This is a clear verification that God's method is the best 00:04:13.08\00:04:15.80 method to reach Nebuchadnezzar. 00:04:15.84\00:04:17.26 God has given Nebuchadnezzar every opportunity. 00:04:17.29\00:04:19.64 He has given him dreams. 00:04:19.68\00:04:20.65 He has given him 00:04:20.66\00:04:21.63 interpretations, and been a 00:04:21.64\00:04:22.61 witness to him through his 00:04:22.64\00:04:23.87 faithful followers. 00:04:23.90\00:04:24.91 This is a year transition 00:04:24.95\00:04:27.17 between the time he has interpreted the dream and the 00:04:27.21\00:04:30.94 time comes upon him is a perfect confirmation and 00:04:30.98\00:04:34.67 verification that God's method is the best 00:04:34.71\00:04:36.34 to reach Nebuchadnezzar. 00:04:36.38\00:04:37.45 Nothing else is working. 00:04:37.49\00:04:38.50 So this tells us that the best thing that can happen to 00:04:38.53\00:04:41.14 Nebuchadnezzar right now, which Nebuchadnezzar himself 00:04:41.18\00:04:44.49 testifies of in this entire Chapter, is that God's will 00:04:44.53\00:04:47.45 will be carried out and that he will lose this kingdom, 00:04:47.48\00:04:50.36 even his sense. 00:04:50.40\00:04:51.89 He will become like a wild man, actually the psychiatrists 00:04:51.92\00:04:54.64 have a term for this syndrome that 00:04:54.68\00:04:58.23 happen to Nebuchadnezzar. 00:04:58.26\00:04:59.63 What happened in ancient times where men and women that would 00:04:59.67\00:05:03.09 live very close to their wild stock, their animals. 00:05:03.13\00:05:06.30 At times they would have what was called a Wild Man Syndrome, 00:05:06.33\00:05:09.96 Wild Ox Syndrome. 00:05:10.00\00:05:11.78 They would become like animals. 00:05:11.82\00:05:13.67 They are thinking that this is probably what God allowed 00:05:13.71\00:05:17.24 to happen to Nebuchadnezzar, he became like an ox. 00:05:17.27\00:05:20.06 He lost his sense, he lost his ability to rule. 00:05:20.09\00:05:22.84 Everyone forsook him, everyone left him, 00:05:22.88\00:05:26.00 he was eating grass, he was crazy, 00:05:26.03\00:05:27.96 he wasn't taking care of himself. 00:05:27.99\00:05:29.84 He wasn't cutting his hair, and wasn't cleaning his nails. 00:05:29.88\00:05:32.09 He wasn't doing anything, everyone left him Ty, 00:05:32.12\00:05:34.64 except for one person. 00:05:34.67\00:05:35.78 The band around the tree tells us that when everyone 00:05:35.82\00:05:38.98 else leaves us, God is still there. 00:05:39.02\00:05:41.39 "God never leaves us," Hebrews 13:5, and He never forsake us. 00:05:41.43\00:05:45.37 God was with Nebuchadnezzar. 00:05:45.40\00:05:46.77 As we pointed out in previous programs on the book of 00:05:46.81\00:05:49.18 Daniel, even though the 00:05:49.21\00:05:51.14 book of Daniel is generally 00:05:51.18\00:05:52.79 thought of as a book of end 00:05:52.83\00:05:54.37 time prophecies and that's there 00:05:54.41\00:05:56.80 and it is a vital truth. 00:05:56.84\00:05:57.81 There is something else happening in the book of Daniel. 00:05:57.84\00:06:00.39 That is the story of God relentlessly pursuing king 00:06:00.43\00:06:06.65 Nebuchadnezzar to bring him to Himself 00:06:06.69\00:06:09.22 and eternal salvation. 00:06:09.26\00:06:10.49 It is amazing that this God of heaven has such and eye 00:06:10.53\00:06:14.31 of singular mercy for Nebuchadnezzar. 00:06:14.35\00:06:18.49 He is focused on this king and bringing him to Himself. 00:06:18.53\00:06:21.18 I love it because as he goes through this great trial, 00:06:21.22\00:06:25.11 as all of his lords and even his family leave him. 00:06:25.14\00:06:28.59 It says at the end of verse 34, "and at the end of 00:06:28.63\00:06:32.04 the days, I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up my 00:06:32.08\00:06:35.55 eyes unto heaven. " 00:06:35.59\00:06:37.21 It doesn't matter who we are, it doesn't matter where we 00:06:37.24\00:06:39.12 are, doesn't matter what we have been through, 00:06:39.16\00:06:42.50 if we lift our eyes up to heaven, heaven responds. 00:06:42.54\00:06:45.98 God responds and as Nebuchadnezzar lifted up his 00:06:46.01\00:06:49.42 eyes to heaven, in that moment it says, 00:06:49.46\00:06:51.19 "his understanding returned to him and he blessed the" 00:06:51.22\00:06:54.40 "Most High, and he praised and honored Him that lives" 00:06:54.43\00:06:57.15 "for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion" 00:06:57.19\00:06:59.79 "and His kingdom is from generation to generation:" 00:06:59.83\00:07:02.52 Instantaneous here, Nebuchadnezzar turns to God, 00:07:02.56\00:07:05.64 he lifts his eyes to God and praises and blesses God 00:07:05.67\00:07:08.80 because God brings a return of his understanding. 00:07:08.84\00:07:12.72 We see here that self-centeredness and arrogance, 00:07:12.75\00:07:16.99 and self exaltation is the precursor to insanity. 00:07:17.02\00:07:20.39 It has really, as you said, the essence of the sin 00:07:20.42\00:07:23.75 problem, self-centeredness is. 00:07:23.78\00:07:26.08 Then we see that the moment that Nebuchadnezzar turns 00:07:26.11\00:07:30.24 his heart to the Lord and exalt the God of heaven, 00:07:30.28\00:07:34.37 his sanity returns to him. 00:07:34.40\00:07:35.98 He is in his right mind again after seven years, 00:07:36.02\00:07:39.83 seven years of living in this very low, horrible 00:07:39.86\00:07:43.63 state of mind. 00:07:43.67\00:07:45.00 With no doubt self-incrimination and guilt driving him 00:07:45.04\00:07:50.05 to insanity, the moment Nebuchadnezzar lifts up his eyes 00:07:50.09\00:07:55.07 to the God of heaven, his sanity returns to him and 00:07:55.10\00:07:58.13 this is what sanity looks like, James. 00:07:58.16\00:07:59.97 Sanity is a recognition of God's position in our life, 00:08:00.01\00:08:06.12 and in the universe as the Most High God. 00:08:06.15\00:08:09.35 The one who's kingdom is eternal and will go on 00:08:09.38\00:08:12.11 and on for ever. 00:08:12.14\00:08:13.11 We are, as it were, nothing by comparison to God and 00:08:13.12\00:08:17.52 yet when we find refuge in Him, He lifts us up to all 00:08:17.56\00:08:21.97 that we truly should be and can be. 00:08:22.01\00:08:24.17 What is really interesting about this is 00:08:24.21\00:08:26.75 Nebuchadnezzar had this transformation, he 00:08:26.79\00:08:29.27 recognizes what is significant and what is secondary. 00:08:29.30\00:08:32.63 What he does in verse 35 is he makes this declaration, 00:08:32.67\00:08:35.32 that is powerful and important for us today, he says. 00:08:35.36\00:08:37.89 "And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as 00:08:37.92\00:08:40.64 nothing: and he does according to his will in the army 00:08:40.67\00:08:43.25 of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and 00:08:43.28\00:08:45.82 none can stop his hand, or say unto him, 00:08:45.86\00:08:49.57 "What are you doing?" 00:08:49.61\00:08:50.81 Now it is really important for us to understand what 00:08:50.85\00:08:53.26 is going on here. 00:08:53.30\00:08:54.27 Nebuchadnezzar is prioritizing what is most 00:08:54.31\00:08:56.88 important and secondary. 00:08:56.92\00:08:58.33 Before this conversion, what was most important was his 00:08:58.37\00:09:01.78 kingdom, his lords, his counselors, his position in 00:09:01.82\00:09:05.19 society, his influence politically, and his kingship. 00:09:05.23\00:09:08.12 Now what is important is his relationship with God. 00:09:08.16\00:09:11.02 Everything else is secondary. 00:09:11.05\00:09:12.64 Everything else is reputed is nothing 00:09:12.67\00:09:14.18 in comparison to that. 00:09:14.22\00:09:15.39 Once you have a right relationship with God, 00:09:15.43\00:09:18.64 Nebuchadnezzar is saying, once you're understanding 00:09:18.68\00:09:21.61 returns and you recognize and bless and praise God, 00:09:21.64\00:09:25.04 first and foremost, all this other stuff is secondary. 00:09:25.08\00:09:28.35 And it comes, verse 36, "at the same time my reason 00:09:28.38\00:09:31.20 returned to me; and for the glory of my kingdom, 00:09:31.24\00:09:33.46 mine honor and brightness returned unto me; 00:09:33.50\00:09:35.61 and my counselors and my lords sought unto me; 00:09:35.64\00:09:37.72 and I was established in my kingdom, 00:09:37.75\00:09:39.19 and excellent Majesty was added unto me. " 00:09:39.23\00:09:40.59 All of that as a place, but it is all secondary. 00:09:40.63\00:09:43.40 What we do in this life often 00:09:43.44\00:09:45.44 is we make all that first. 00:09:45.48\00:09:47.66 Our influence, our position, 00:09:47.70\00:09:49.85 our economic status all 00:09:49.89\00:09:52.62 comes before God. 00:09:52.65\00:09:54.33 This is what Nebuchadnezzar was doing. 00:09:54.36\00:09:55.71 Ultimately, when we do that we neglect the real issues 00:09:55.75\00:09:58.52 of life, taking care of other people and putting other 00:09:58.56\00:10:01.28 people first, and we become 00:10:01.32\00:10:03.80 first. This is what Nebuchadnezzar is going through, 00:10:03.84\00:10:05.60 this incredible transformation in his priorities of 00:10:05.64\00:10:11.01 God and other people. 00:10:11.04\00:10:12.69 I think of what Jesus had 00:10:12.72\00:10:14.54 to say to all of us, in 00:10:14.57\00:10:16.92 Matthew 6:33, putting our 00:10:16.95\00:10:18.80 priorities in order, "seek ye 00:10:18.83\00:10:21.09 first the kingdom of God. " 00:10:21.12\00:10:23.31 That is first in priorities, first in focus, "seek ye 00:10:23.35\00:10:26.67 first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and 00:10:26.71\00:10:30.00 all these things shall be added unto you. " 00:10:30.03\00:10:32.67 All these things, that Jesus was referring to, 00:10:32.71\00:10:35.41 was the material blessings of life. 00:10:35.45\00:10:38.44 These material blessings are secondary, and that's in 00:10:38.47\00:10:42.18 God's power to provide and we need to leave that to His 00:10:42.21\00:10:46.50 charge and put our focus on living for God and seeking 00:10:46.53\00:10:50.78 His righteousness. 00:10:50.82\00:10:51.90 That is a faith venture, I mean that is a faith venture 00:10:51.93\00:10:54.80 to be able to lay aside because we need these things 00:10:54.84\00:10:57.67 that we have in life to survive, to sustain us. 00:10:57.71\00:11:00.40 We need these things if we have a family, if we have 00:11:00.44\00:11:02.69 children, we need clothes, we need food. 00:11:02.72\00:11:04.82 It is a faith venture to say I am going to make that 00:11:04.85\00:11:07.08 secondary and I'm going to put God first. 00:11:07.11\00:11:08.99 What happens if you don't do that is those things will 00:11:09.02\00:11:11.27 consume you and God will be nowhere to be found. 00:11:11.31\00:11:14.80 Then he asks this question, in verse 35. 00:11:14.83\00:11:17.13 "No one can say to God, What are you doing?" 00:11:17.17\00:11:19.40 Now don't misunderstand that friends, we can ask God 00:11:19.44\00:11:22.05 what He is doing, many times we do ask God, 00:11:22.09\00:11:23.95 What are you doing? Why did this happen to me? 00:11:23.98\00:11:25.81 I don't get it! 00:11:25.84\00:11:26.84 God doesn't mind us asking the question, but when we 00:11:26.88\00:11:29.33 understand who God is, when we understand His character, 00:11:29.37\00:11:32.10 when we understand that He is long-suffering not willing 00:11:32.14\00:11:34.63 that any should perish but all will come to repentance. 00:11:34.66\00:11:38.91 Then the question is one that is not necessary, because God's 00:11:38.95\00:11:43.13 reply to that question to us is, I am moving heaven and earth, 00:11:43.16\00:11:46.71 I am doing everything I can to save you. 00:11:46.75\00:11:48.74 To get you into the kingdom and be with 00:11:48.78\00:11:50.74 Me for all eternity. 00:11:50.77\00:11:51.74 Then we come to the same conclusion that Nebuchadnezzar 00:11:51.75\00:11:55.83 came to and, that is, that all God's ways are justice, 00:11:55.87\00:11:59.92 His works are truth. 00:11:59.95\00:12:01.79 The context here, Nebuchadnezzar is realizing that 00:12:01.82\00:12:04.77 even though his experience has been painful at times, 00:12:04.81\00:12:07.72 that God has had his best interest at heart. 00:12:07.75\00:12:11.12 Through all that he has been through, God was doing 00:12:11.16\00:12:14.44 what was right, and best, and true for Nebuchadnezzar, 00:12:14.48\00:12:17.97 to bring him to the Lord God of heaven and to worship 00:12:18.00\00:12:21.46 the Creator of heaven and earth, 00:12:21.49\00:12:23.91 and to yield his life to Him. 00:12:23.94\00:12:26.29 That is what God is seeking to work out in your life, 00:12:26.32\00:12:28.80 my friend, and my life, through all the experiences 00:12:28.84\00:12:31.28 that we have. 00:12:31.32\00:12:32.36 We are looking forward to studying with you again. 00:12:32.40\00:12:33.88 Thank you and God bless. 00:12:33.92\00:12:36.68
