Hello friends! 00:00:21.10\00:00:22.73 Welcome to Books of the Book. 00:00:22.76\00:00:24.03 I'm Ty Gibson and we are 00:00:24.06\00:00:25.28 presently engaged in a study of 00:00:25.31\00:00:27.16 the book of Daniel and with me is my co-host 00:00:27.20\00:00:29.56 James Rafferty. 00:00:29.60\00:00:30.70 So we are in Daniel Chapter 4 00:00:30.74\00:00:32.23 and it is incredible when you 00:00:32.27\00:00:34.40 look at Daniel 4 because the 00:00:34.44\00:00:36.50 book of Daniel, written by Daniel the prophet and believer. 00:00:36.54\00:00:39.23 A man who was connected with God with the exception of 00:00:39.26\00:00:43.12 Daniel Chapter 4 because Daniel Chapter 4 shows us that 00:00:43.15\00:00:46.32 God has an interest in every one, even if they aren't the 00:00:46.36\00:00:49.49 most ardent believer or follower of the Lord. 00:00:49.53\00:00:52.26 Everyone who has a radical conversion experience with God. 00:00:52.30\00:00:56.19 Daniel Chapter 4 was written by Nebuchadnezzar. 00:00:56.22\00:00:59.82 It is a testimony of his experience, his relationship 00:00:59.86\00:01:03.39 with God, and how God has worked in his life. 00:01:03.43\00:01:05.92 God has allowed Nebuchadnezzar to give this testimony as 00:01:05.96\00:01:09.84 part of this prophetic book of Daniel. 00:01:09.87\00:01:11.82 It's incredible, yes it's phenomenal because as we know 00:01:11.85\00:01:15.63 Peters says that holy men of old spake as they were moved 00:01:15.66\00:01:19.41 by the Holy Spirit. 00:01:19.44\00:01:20.85 The Holy Spirit inspires prophets and they are 00:01:20.89\00:01:23.66 called holy men. 00:01:23.70\00:01:24.92 Here we have a section of Scripture that is written by 00:01:24.95\00:01:29.47 none other than Nebuchadnezzar. 00:01:29.50\00:01:30.83 We need to give a little bit of background here so that 00:01:30.87\00:01:33.29 we remember who this is we are dealing with. 00:01:33.32\00:01:35.62 Nebuchadnezzar is a despotic dictator. 00:01:35.66\00:01:39.23 He is responsible for taking God's people captive and 00:01:39.27\00:01:43.76 enslaving them. 00:01:43.80\00:01:44.90 He has a horrific career record as a mass murderer and has 00:01:44.93\00:01:52.59 and performed a genocide no doubt. 00:01:52.62\00:01:53.92 He has moved into villages and countries and this man is 00:01:53.95\00:01:57.47 no one you would expect to be penning inspired 00:01:57.50\00:02:01.23 words in Scripture, yet right here in Chapter 4 we have 00:02:01.26\00:02:04.76 the testimony of King Nebuchadnezzar chronicling his 00:02:04.80\00:02:08.26 radical conversion. 00:02:08.30\00:02:09.81 You might not even think that Nebuchadnezzar would be 00:02:09.84\00:02:11.56 saved in heaven unless you would read this testimony 00:02:11.60\00:02:14.90 which is probably possibly why God has in His providence 00:02:14.94\00:02:18.19 allow this testimony to be part of the inspired Scripture. 00:02:18.22\00:02:21.44 But listen to this, Daniel Chapter 4 and verse 1, 00:02:21.47\00:02:24.61 listen to Nebuchadnezzar. 00:02:24.65\00:02:25.71 "Nebuchadnezzar, the king, unto all people, nations, and 00:02:25.74\00:02:29.61 "languages that do well on all the earth," 00:02:29.64\00:02:30.99 "peace be multiplied unto you." 00:02:31.03\00:02:33.49 That sounds like Paul. 00:02:33.53\00:02:34.81 That sounds like New Testament introduction to one 00:02:34.84\00:02:38.08 of Paul's epistles. 00:02:38.12\00:02:39.19 This is a changed man, this is a converted man and do you 00:02:39.22\00:02:42.24 know why this is a converted man? 00:02:42.28\00:02:43.99 Because the testimony of Nebuchadnezzar is, I wanted to 00:02:44.03\00:02:48.01 tell you how good God is, how great God is. 00:02:48.04\00:02:49.91 He made me into a wild man and I went for seven years 00:02:49.94\00:02:53.63 eating grass while my hair grew as Eagle feathers and my 00:02:53.67\00:02:57.32 nails grew as Eagle's claws. 00:02:57.36\00:02:58.58 Isn't God good! 00:02:58.62\00:03:00.17 Yeah, it's amazing. 00:03:00.20\00:03:01.68 In other words, it takes a converted man to go through 00:03:01.72\00:03:04.88 such a horrendous trial and come out saying God is good. 00:03:04.91\00:03:08.56 We know was a horrendous trial because down in verse 4, 00:03:08.59\00:03:12.33 he says I at rest in my house and flourishing in my 00:03:12.36\00:03:16.06 palace, this guy had everything. 00:03:16.09\00:03:18.73 He was surrounded with opulence. 00:03:18.76\00:03:21.33 He could indulge himself in any earthly pleasures. 00:03:21.36\00:03:24.91 He was the king and yet he is praising God for taking him 00:03:24.95\00:03:30.66 out of that situation and by His divine providence 00:03:30.69\00:03:34.30 thrusting Nebuchadnezzar into a very terrible trial, 00:03:34.34\00:03:37.90 obviously, Nebuchadnezzar literally lost his mind. 00:03:37.94\00:03:41.05 He went insane according to his own testimony here. 00:03:41.08\00:03:44.40 Nebuchadnezzar somehow is able to look upon this 00:03:44.44\00:03:47.69 experience and praise God because he knows that through 00:03:47.73\00:03:51.40 this experience God has reached his heart and brought 00:03:51.44\00:03:55.07 him to an understanding of the truth. 00:03:55.11\00:03:57.08 He knows that God has taken him out of a false security. 00:03:57.11\00:03:59.94 And earthly security, a security that is dependent on 00:03:59.98\00:04:02.78 earthly powers or an earthly 00:04:02.81\00:04:04.60 wealth which is all going to 00:04:04.63\00:04:06.29 vanish, he knows that God has 00:04:06.33\00:04:07.95 removed him. 00:04:07.99\00:04:08.96 The reason why he is so incredibly impressed by what God 00:04:08.97\00:04:12.86 has done is because Nebuchadnezzar understands 00:04:12.90\00:04:15.47 the pride of his own heart. 00:04:15.50\00:04:16.69 This whole chapter deals with pride and it ends with 00:04:16.73\00:04:20.52 this testimony that Nebuchadnezzar gives a 00:04:20.55\00:04:23.37 summation of his testimony and basically says those who walk 00:04:23.41\00:04:25.41 in pride He's able to abase. 00:04:25.45\00:04:26.95 Nebuchadnezzar realizes looking back that he, 00:04:26.98\00:04:29.62 even though he was at rest, even though he was 00:04:29.65\00:04:32.22 flourishing, he was in a false security, that is what 00:04:32.25\00:04:34.85 we see in the world today. 00:04:34.89\00:04:35.86 Many especially in the Western countries, we see people 00:04:35.89\00:04:38.58 who are resting in a false security and one day that 00:04:38.62\00:04:41.27 security will be broken. 00:04:41.31\00:04:42.88 It will be diminished, it will be gone and there will 00:04:42.92\00:04:45.05 be nothing left. 00:04:45.09\00:04:46.30 God is seeking to reach us right now and say the things 00:04:46.34\00:04:49.59 you find security in today are meaningless in the end. 00:04:49.63\00:04:52.85 Absolutely, absolutely! If you think about it, 00:04:52.88\00:04:55.07 the average Westerner in 00:04:55.11\00:04:58.52 our world today lives at a 00:04:58.55\00:05:01.15 lifestyle level that might not be too much behind 00:05:01.18\00:05:06.48 Nebuchadnezzar at peace in his house, flourishing in his palace 00:05:06.51\00:05:10.94 We are surrounded with every provision we could possibly 00:05:10.97\00:05:15.45 imagine, we probably have available to us some of 00:05:15.49\00:05:19.32 the amenities of life that Nebuchadnezzar in his time 00:05:19.36\00:05:23.16 didn't even have in his palace. 00:05:23.19\00:05:25.89 The fact is that we are at rest in our houses. 00:05:25.92\00:05:29.81 We are at ease in our little palaces, our little worlds 00:05:29.84\00:05:34.93 in which we do not feel our need of God. 00:05:34.96\00:05:37.79 We do not feel our need of His grace. 00:05:37.83\00:05:40.59 The fact is James though, if we think about this we are 00:05:40.63\00:05:44.58 reading the testimony here in Daniel 4, of a despotic 00:05:44.61\00:05:48.57 ruler, we look upon him, and we think of some of the 00:05:48.60\00:05:50.54 horrible atrocities that he committed in his lifetime. 00:05:50.57\00:05:54.71 But from God's perspective, really there isn't this 00:05:54.74\00:06:00.09 great distinction between sinners. 00:06:00.13\00:06:03.10 The fact is, all have sinned and fallen short of 00:06:03.13\00:06:05.90 the glory of God. 00:06:05.93\00:06:07.05 Nebuchadnezzar reveals to us a carnality and a 00:06:07.08\00:06:11.67 wickedness that is the potential of all of our hearts. 00:06:11.70\00:06:15.26 If left to ourselves, apart from the grace of God, 00:06:15.30\00:06:18.25 there is not a one of us as human beings who would not 00:06:18.28\00:06:21.45 engage in the same kinds of things that Nebuchadnezzar 00:06:21.48\00:06:25.14 engaged in as this despotic ruler filled with arrogance 00:06:25.17\00:06:28.79 and pride. 00:06:28.83\00:06:29.88 He had an inflated sense of himself, and we too, as sinners 00:06:29.92\00:06:33.24 have an inflated sense of ourselves in our little worlds. 00:06:33.28\00:06:35.92 We just don't have the kind of power necessarily 00:06:35.96\00:06:39.24 that he had at his disposal, but we are all sinners in 00:06:39.27\00:06:42.52 need of this radical kind of conversion. 00:06:42.55\00:06:44.55 It's true you know, it's fallen human nature to categorize sin 00:06:44.58\00:06:47.52 to make ourselves out to be better than somebody else. 00:06:47.55\00:06:50.47 Put these different categories that God does not see. 00:06:50.51\00:06:53.36 That's what I think is really profound that Nebuchadnezzar 00:06:53.39\00:06:56.74 is giving a statement here in verse 1, "to all people," 00:06:56.78\00:06:59.88 "Nations and languages that dwell on all the earth. " 00:06:59.92\00:07:02.92 I think what he is saying is, because we categorize sin 00:07:02.96\00:07:05.80 and because we see certain people as worse than others, 00:07:05.84\00:07:09.46 Nebuchadnezzar is probably seen as the worse of all. 00:07:09.49\00:07:13.57 The fact that he is filled with pride, there is no way 00:07:13.61\00:07:17.65 a nice man can get to the position he is in, 00:07:17.69\00:07:19.55 and of course he doesn't pretend to be nice, 00:07:19.59\00:07:21.45 in any sense of the word up unto this time. 00:07:21.48\00:07:23.27 Even Daniel was made a Eunuch by Nebuchadnezzar, 00:07:23.30\00:07:26.22 everyone was to serve Nebuchadnezzar's purpose. 00:07:26.25\00:07:28.59 If they couldn't serve his purpose they died. 00:07:28.63\00:07:30.90 In that context Nebuchadnezzar is saying, in essence, 00:07:30.93\00:07:34.45 I want all the world to know that if God can save me, 00:07:34.48\00:07:37.97 He can save you. 00:07:38.00\00:07:39.13 There is another lesson here James, in the fact that 00:07:39.17\00:07:42.02 Nebuchadnezzar is addressing all peoples, nations, 00:07:42.05\00:07:44.72 languages, that dwell 00:07:44.76\00:07:46.17 on the earth in verse 1. 00:07:46.20\00:07:47.45 He is sending out his testimony 00:07:47.48\00:07:49.61 in the form of a letter 00:07:49.64\00:07:50.77 obviously, all over the world. 00:07:50.80\00:07:53.07 The first impulse of a converted heart, I mean when we 00:07:53.10\00:07:57.77 really see our need and begin to receive the grace of God 00:07:57.80\00:08:02.48 that transformation that is wrought in our hearts, 00:08:02.51\00:08:06.71 causes to arise in us an impulse to bring others in 00:08:06.74\00:08:10.90 contact with the grace of God. 00:08:10.94\00:08:12.79 Nebuchadnezzar is eager for the whole world to become 00:08:12.83\00:08:17.96 aware of his encounter with the living God. 00:08:18.00\00:08:20.52 Amen, that is why this testimony so powerful, because, 00:08:20.55\00:08:23.68 he is making such a radical transformation. 00:08:23.72\00:08:26.81 He has such a powerful witness 00:08:26.85\00:08:29.31 to share that at his time and 00:08:29.34\00:08:31.56 his level it will have a major 00:08:31.59\00:08:33.74 affect, we do not know how many people will be in the kingdom 00:08:33.77\00:08:35.95 because of the testimony of Nebuchadnezzar. 00:08:35.99\00:08:38.55 We do know this, it's powerful. 00:08:38.58\00:08:39.87 overcome, not only by the blood of Jesus Christ, 00:08:44.39\00:08:46.15 but by the word of our testimony. 00:08:46.18\00:08:47.58 Not only do we not know how many people will be in the 00:08:47.62\00:08:50.02 kingdom because of Nebuchadnezzar's testimony, but 00:08:50.05\00:08:52.38 imagine James, what it is going to be like on resurrection 00:08:52.42\00:08:55.59 morning when Nebuchadnezzar is there among the redeemed? 00:08:55.63\00:08:58.77 Also, among the resurrected saints of all ages. 00:08:58.80\00:09:03.90 There will be those who Nebuchadnezzar was in fact, 00:09:03.93\00:09:08.39 the person who brought them into slavery and committed 00:09:08.43\00:09:12.15 horrible atrocities against them and took their lives. 00:09:12.18\00:09:16.59 They are going to be amazed, and absolutely gratified to 00:09:16.63\00:09:21.45 see that after that wicked man had taken their lives, 00:09:21.48\00:09:26.26 he was able to be reached by the grace of God. 00:09:26.30\00:09:29.90 There he is in God's eternal kingdom. 00:09:29.94\00:09:32.87 Amen, so Nebuchadnezzar is having this dream and this time 00:09:32.91\00:09:37.08 as he is troubled by it, verse 5, "I saw a dream which made me" 00:09:37.11\00:09:41.25 "afraid, and the thoughts upon my bed and the visions" 00:09:41.28\00:09:43.45 "of my head troubled me. " 00:09:43.49\00:09:44.46 He makes a decree this time to bring in all the wise men 00:09:44.47\00:09:47.07 but he doesn't threaten them with death. 00:09:47.10\00:09:48.64 So you notice a little bit of transition taking place 00:09:48.68\00:09:51.10 here in his thinking. 00:09:51.14\00:09:52.39 We have seen him, already have a dream, where he was very 00:09:52.43\00:09:55.82 angry and want all the wise men killed. 00:09:55.85\00:09:57.14 Then we saw him move from that, in his experience, that 00:09:57.17\00:10:00.83 intellectual conviction that this is truth and Daniel your 00:10:00.87\00:10:04.87 God is the God of gods, to actually see a witness of 00:10:04.91\00:10:09.24 the Son of Man with His people in the furnace. 00:10:09.28\00:10:12.22 We know that these two events really affected him 00:10:12.25\00:10:15.16 in a powerful way. 00:10:15.19\00:10:16.16 The truth and a witness of the truth. 00:10:16.20\00:10:18.52 Now, as he has his second dream, of a tree, a great tree, 00:10:18.55\00:10:22.74 that fills the whole earth and feeds and give shade to all 00:10:22.78\00:10:26.65 these animals, and basically, is a picture of his nation 00:10:26.68\00:10:31.08 as the provider for and the power that directs all of 00:10:31.11\00:10:35.47 these different nations. 00:10:35.51\00:10:36.95 He recognizes that God is ultimately showing him who He 00:10:36.98\00:10:41.05 is and what God has given to him. 00:10:41.08\00:10:42.35 He is a little bit mellower. 00:10:42.39\00:10:44.00 He brings in his astrologers and doesn't threaten them 00:10:44.03\00:10:47.59 with death, but he is still not completely directed to God 00:10:47.62\00:10:50.93 because he doesn't call Daniel in among these astrologers 00:10:50.96\00:10:54.23 and wise men. 00:10:54.27\00:10:55.31 He waits till the very last before he calls Daniel in. 00:10:55.34\00:10:58.85 I think he knows that when he calls Daniel in, he is going 00:10:58.89\00:11:02.37 to receive a clear understanding of the meaning of his 00:11:02.41\00:11:05.81 vision and he has a hunch, just like the previous vision, 00:11:05.84\00:11:09.21 that it is not necessarily going to be exactly what 00:11:09.24\00:11:12.17 he wants to hear. 00:11:12.20\00:11:13.37 He knows that if he calls Daniel in, it is 00:11:13.41\00:11:15.29 going to be the truth. 00:11:15.33\00:11:16.30 He senses that when he encounters the truth is going to 00:11:16.31\00:11:19.96 require something of him. 00:11:19.99\00:11:21.33 There is going to be responsibility involved, and so 00:11:21.36\00:11:24.59 Daniel is his last resort. 00:11:24.62\00:11:26.54 He has curiosity and wants to know the meaning of the 00:11:26.57\00:11:29.93 vision, but he knows that Daniel is truly a godly man 00:11:29.97\00:11:33.26 who will tell him the truth and no doubt a little 00:11:33.30\00:11:36.56 reluctance to hear the whole truth. 00:11:36.60\00:11:38.42 So he gives Daniel the basic dream and then he asks Daniel 00:11:38.46\00:11:42.56 to give him the interpretation. 00:11:42.59\00:11:44.07 It is interesting because it says in verse 19, 00:11:44.10\00:11:46.96 of Chapter 4, that when Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, 00:11:46.99\00:11:49.74 when Daniel received this dream from 00:11:49.77\00:11:51.73 Nebuchadnezzar, "he was astonished for one hour and the 00:11:51.77\00:11:56.52 thoughts of his head troubled him. " 00:11:56.56\00:11:59.34 "The king spoke to him and said don't let the dream," 00:11:59.38\00:12:02.38 "or the interpretation trouble you. " 00:12:02.41\00:12:04.09 Daniel answers, Belshazzar answers, my lord, 00:12:04.13\00:12:07.92 I really love this, "the dream be to them that hate thee" 00:12:07.95\00:12:11.81 "and the interpretation thereof to thine enemies. " 00:12:11.84\00:12:15.55 In other words, Daniel is reluctant to tell the king, the 00:12:15.58\00:12:20.20 interpretation of the dream. 00:12:20.23\00:12:21.20 Now, I really believe this is powerful. 00:12:21.21\00:12:23.18 This is a powerful witness or testimony of a 00:12:23.21\00:12:25.93 believer in God, because to often, 00:12:25.96\00:12:28.99 as followers of God, we don't have a reluctant 00:12:29.02\00:12:32.58 bone in our body. 00:12:32.61\00:12:34.24 We just want to tell it like it is and let the chips fall 00:12:34.43\00:12:37.01 where they may and if you can't handle the truth then 00:12:37.04\00:12:39.59 that's too bad sir. 00:12:39.62\00:12:40.59 We see here, in the character of Daniel, a spirit that is 00:12:40.60\00:12:43.31 different, we can see here a spirit that is concerned. 00:12:43.35\00:12:46.13 Now, if anyone had a reason to hold something against 00:12:46.17\00:12:48.91 Nebuchadnezzar, or a grudge 00:12:48.95\00:12:50.44 against Nebuchadnezzar it was 00:12:50.48\00:12:51.81 Daniel, he was the one that 00:12:51.85\00:12:53.00 was separated from his home, 00:12:53.04\00:12:54.04 from his family and made a 00:12:54.07\00:12:55.04 Eunuch, made to serve this king. 00:12:55.05\00:12:57.53 So Daniel, deep down in his heart, 00:12:57.56\00:13:00.02 has the spirit of Christ 00:13:00.06\00:13:01.64 and longs to reach the heart of the King and is 00:13:01.67\00:13:05.28 reluctant to share. 00:13:05.32\00:13:07.04 Now, I like this because this reluctance is combined with 00:13:07.07\00:13:10.81 Daniels ardent desire to obey his God. 00:13:10.85\00:13:15.22 To follow through with and share the truth. 00:13:15.25\00:13:17.48 This is what Christianity is all about. 00:13:17.51\00:13:19.67 It's about the spirit of Christ that possess a meekness 00:13:19.70\00:13:23.61 and an unwillingness to hurt people, to harm people. 00:13:23.65\00:13:27.52 To discourage people, but at the same time has a 00:13:27.56\00:13:30.99 truthfulness and honesty and integrity that wants 00:13:31.02\00:13:34.30 to honor God and do and obey exactly what God calls 00:13:34.33\00:13:37.58 us to do and say. 00:13:37.61\00:13:38.88 This is the same spirit that we witness in Jesus 00:13:38.91\00:13:41.91 when He said to His disciples, 00:13:41.95\00:13:44.08 "that there are many things that 00:13:44.12\00:13:46.22 I want to tell you but you 00:13:46.25\00:13:47.72 cannot bear them now. " 00:13:47.76\00:13:49.53 The truth was revealed to the disciples as they could 00:13:49.57\00:13:52.98 handle it, as they could bear it because the objective 00:13:53.01\00:13:56.17 of Christ's goal was to reach their hearts and bring 00:13:56.20\00:13:59.32 them to conversion. 00:13:59.36\00:14:00.76 Not merely to unload the truth concerning themselves and 00:14:00.79\00:14:05.32 to blow them away and hurt them and turn them away. 00:14:05.36\00:14:09.02 Daniel is governed by the same meekness of spirit. 00:14:09.06\00:14:12.65 He is not eager to bring before king Nebuchadnezzar the 00:14:12.69\00:14:16.24 things that will be painful and difficult for him to bear. 00:14:16.27\00:14:19.79 But he is eager for Nebuchadnezzar to receive the 00:14:19.82\00:14:23.29 truth and to be turned to the Lord, so he follows through 00:14:23.33\00:14:26.38 and does tell the truth about the matter. 00:14:26.42\00:14:30.12 It is extremely important for all of us to recognize that 00:14:30.15\00:14:33.75 it is possible, like Nebuchadnezzar, for us to merely 00:14:33.79\00:14:37.35 have an intellectual conversion friends. 00:14:37.39\00:14:39.41 Nebuchadnezzar was led finally to conversion of heart, 00:14:39.44\00:14:43.19 and that is what we are going to continue exploring as we 00:14:43.23\00:14:46.94 come back after the break. 00:14:46.98\00:14:48.14
