Welcome back to our study of 00:00:01.98\00:00:02.95 the book of Daniel. 00:00:02.96\00:00:03.93 We are in Chapter 3 James. 00:00:03.94\00:00:04.91 As we have been looking at this 00:00:04.92\00:00:06.47 Chapter we've seen that Nebuchadnezzar has defied the 00:00:06.51\00:00:10.94 dream that God gave him in Chapter 2 and now he is seeking 00:00:10.98\00:00:14.76 to implement, through force and coercion, 00:00:14.79\00:00:17.21 his own system of worship. 00:00:17.24\00:00:19.47 All the people are governed by fear and yielding even, 00:00:19.50\00:00:24.37 obviously many of the captives from Israel. 00:00:24.40\00:00:28.43 Obviously bowing as well and then we have this remnant 00:00:28.47\00:00:31.60 left standing, Meshach, Shadrach and Abednego. 00:00:31.63\00:00:35.02 They will not bow and now we have this incredible scene. 00:00:35.06\00:00:40.49 These three young men are defying the monarch of Babylon. 00:00:40.53\00:00:45.93 The story picks up there. 00:00:45.96\00:00:47.35 Of course they've been reported. 00:00:47.39\00:00:48.99 There is no way that you can 00:00:49.03\00:00:50.78 stand among the multitudes, 00:00:50.82\00:00:52.50 probably thousands maybe even more. 00:00:52.53\00:00:54.53 Tens of thousands of the leaders and officials of this 00:00:54.56\00:00:58.17 world wide empire, and not be noticed. 00:00:58.21\00:01:00.57 I don't know, they may have been standing individually, 00:01:00.61\00:01:03.03 they may have come from different provinces and may not 00:01:03.06\00:01:05.45 have gotten together in the crowd. 00:01:05.48\00:01:07.00 One may have been over here, and one may have been over 00:01:07.04\00:01:08.85 here, and what may have been over here, which makes 00:01:08.88\00:01:10.66 it more interesting. 00:01:10.70\00:01:11.72 We don't always, in our witness for God, we don't always 00:01:11.76\00:01:15.37 necessarily stand together. 00:01:15.40\00:01:17.40 We may not have another person by our side, but eventually 00:01:17.43\00:01:20.84 they are all brought together, if that is the case. 00:01:20.87\00:01:22.36 They are all brought together and they end up before the 00:01:22.39\00:01:24.81 King, now the King is really not happy. 00:01:24.85\00:01:28.40 It says in verse 13 that Nebuchadnezzar "in his rage" 00:01:28.43\00:01:31.75 "and fury commands to bring Shadrach, Meshach," 00:01:31.79\00:01:34.43 "and Abednego" and a bring these men in before the king. 00:01:34.47\00:01:37.37 And I believe there's two reasons why the King isn't 00:01:37.40\00:01:39.11 happy, one is because he's been defied. 00:01:39.14\00:01:40.60 He's the king, he's the monarch you don't defy me. 00:01:40.64\00:01:43.54 I think number two is because, Nebuchadnezzar made the 00:01:43.57\00:01:46.44 image all gold because he was afraid. 00:01:46.48\00:01:48.05 He was afraid of the future. 00:01:48.09\00:01:49.55 The image of gold, the head, stopping right here. 00:01:49.59\00:01:53.47 Then to go to the silver, he doesn't want that. 00:01:53.51\00:01:57.07 He doesn't want that and so he makes this image of 00:01:57.10\00:02:00.63 solid Gold because he wants to somehow 00:02:00.67\00:02:02.84 make certain his future. 00:02:02.88\00:02:05.82 He's afraid and the people bow because they are afraid, 00:02:07.01\00:02:09.48 because they know if they don't bow they will die. 00:02:09.51\00:02:12.49 Yet here are three young men who aren't afraid. 00:02:12.52\00:02:15.42 They are not afraid at all, in fact they go on to explain 00:02:15.46\00:02:19.60 to the King that they won't worship the image that he set 00:02:19.63\00:02:23.74 up they explain in verse 16 through 18. 00:02:23.78\00:02:26.86 They say with a very strong confidence that our God, 00:02:26.90\00:02:31.28 whom we serve is able to deliver us, even if you throw 00:02:31.31\00:02:35.26 us in the fiery furnace He is able to preserve our lives. 00:02:35.30\00:02:39.40 Then they say in verse 18, "but even if not," even if 00:02:39.44\00:02:43.15 not, if we are cast into the fiery furnace and God 00:02:43.18\00:02:46.88 doesn't preserve us, this is about something more than 00:02:46.92\00:02:50.58 preserving our lives. 00:02:50.62\00:02:51.74 "Let it be known to you, O king that we do not serve" 00:02:51.78\00:02:55.45 "your gods, nor will we bow down and worship the gold 00:02:55.48\00:02:59.12 image which you have set up. " 00:02:59.16\00:03:00.82 Whether God preserves us are not, we are not bowing. 00:03:00.85\00:03:03.76 This goes back to Chapter 1 and verse 8 where Daniel 00:03:03.79\00:03:07.14 purposed in his heart to maintain his integrity 00:03:07.17\00:03:10.48 before the Lord. 00:03:10.52\00:03:11.72 It is of no consequence to them whether they live or die. 00:03:11.76\00:03:14.96 What is of consequence to them, is that they continue 00:03:15.00\00:03:18.17 in integrity to serve God faithfully. 00:03:18.21\00:03:21.26 It is vital that Nebuchadnezzar sees this, 00:03:21.30\00:03:23.18 this heart experience. 00:03:23.22\00:03:24.66 In fact, it isn't about them 00:03:24.69\00:03:26.72 anymore, it is about God. 00:03:26.75\00:03:28.70 Another reason why is not 00:03:28.73\00:03:30.84 only because you see them 00:03:30.87\00:03:32.91 standing and revealing something that Nebuchadnezzar 00:03:32.94\00:03:36.37 doesn't have. 00:03:36.41\00:03:37.52 He is afraid and they are not. 00:03:37.56\00:03:39.18 I think part of his outrage is that he is afraid and they 00:03:39.21\00:03:42.44 are not, they had something he does not have. 00:03:42.47\00:03:44.03 Well God has led Nebuchadnezzar to an intellectual assent 00:03:44.06\00:03:48.78 to the truth so far in Chapters 1 and 2. 00:03:48.82\00:03:51.17 He has come to recognize that this God that Daniel and 00:03:51.20\00:03:55.42 his three friends serve, is a God above all other gods. 00:03:55.45\00:03:59.64 He is the most high God. 00:03:59.67\00:04:00.99 Intellectually he is converted but now we see in Chapter 3 00:04:01.02\00:04:04.67 that God is giving Nebuchadnezzar a living witness. 00:04:04.70\00:04:09.12 A living demonstration of what it really looks like to 00:04:09.15\00:04:13.53 serve and worship the one and only true God. 00:04:13.57\00:04:15.75 These three guys, these three young man, Meshach, Shadrach 00:04:15.78\00:04:19.32 and Abednego, they are testifying to Nebuchadnezzar. 00:04:19.36\00:04:23.09 God is using them to get deeper into his heart and to 00:04:23.13\00:04:26.83 lead Nebuchadnezzar to a deeper conversion. 00:04:26.86\00:04:30.27 So he is thinking in his mind, could it be true? 00:04:30.31\00:04:32.08 Could there be people in my kingdom who are fearless? 00:04:32.11\00:04:35.62 I would love to have that experience. 00:04:35.66\00:04:37.36 I'm going to test them, let me test them now. 00:04:37.39\00:04:38.92 He says in verse 15, I'm going to give you a second chance. 00:04:38.96\00:04:42.67 Maybe you didn't hear me right. 00:04:42.70\00:04:44.23 "If you be ready at the time you hear the sound of the" 00:04:44.27\00:04:47.39 "music," goes through all the instruments. 00:04:47.43\00:04:49.25 "And you fall down and worship the image which I had made" 00:04:49.28\00:04:51.68 "well", but if you do not worship" 00:04:51.72\00:04:53.32 Make sure you understand this! 00:04:53.36\00:04:54.90 "If you do not worship, you will be cast that same hour" 00:04:54.93\00:04:59.22 "into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. " 00:04:59.25\00:05:02.08 And here is, okay? 00:05:02.12\00:05:03.50 The dumbest question in the Bible, are you ready? 00:05:03.53\00:05:06.41 "And who is that God that shall deliver you" 00:05:06.45\00:05:10.46 "out of my hands?" 00:05:10.50\00:05:11.75 Nebuchadnezzar should know better, he should know better! 00:05:11.79\00:05:13.96 At this point Nebuchadnezzar should know the God who 00:05:13.99\00:05:18.01 is able to deliver. 00:05:18.04\00:05:19.80 God has communicated with him. 00:05:19.83\00:05:21.40 God has revealed to him his dream and the interpretation 00:05:21.44\00:05:24.47 of his dream back in Chapter 2. 00:05:24.50\00:05:26.69 He has seen a faint outline of the power of this God. 00:05:26.72\00:05:31.83 He is feeling a rather inflated sense of himself here. 00:05:31.86\00:05:36.93 Plus he doesn't know God. 00:05:36.97\00:05:38.69 No he doesn't. 00:05:38.73\00:05:39.70 Intellectually he does. 00:05:39.73\00:05:41.19 He knows about God, but who is this God? 00:05:41.22\00:05:43.51 Think Ty, just think, can you think of this question being 00:05:43.54\00:05:47.84 asked not so much from the negative, as it might be from 00:05:47.87\00:05:51.31 the positive, in other words Nebuchadnezzar is saying 00:05:51.34\00:05:54.75 they have something I don't have. 00:05:54.78\00:05:56.29 I would love to be fearless like they are. 00:05:56.33\00:05:57.99 I can't believe it, it upsets me that they got it. 00:05:58.03\00:06:01.05 Who is this God? Who is this God that can deliver you? 00:06:01.09\00:06:04.45 In other words Nebuchadnezzar, people just generally 00:06:04.49\00:06:07.61 want to be introduced to a God that can take away 00:06:07.64\00:06:10.73 all of our fear. 00:06:10.76\00:06:11.81 It is as if, yes Nebuchadnezzar is arrogant, yes he wants 00:06:11.84\00:06:15.17 them to bow down and worship but, somewhere in the back 00:06:15.20\00:06:18.49 of his mind, he is doing 00:06:18.53\00:06:20.22 in an experiment here. 00:06:20.25\00:06:21.87 He has already seen Daniel's 00:06:21.91\00:06:23.91 God in action one time before. 00:06:23.95\00:06:25.89 Now he is asking the question, is your God able to 00:06:25.92\00:06:32.03 deliver you from me, from my power of the fiery furnace? 00:06:32.06\00:06:34.95 He is about to get the answer to his question. 00:06:34.99\00:06:36.87 We are all doing an experienced Ty. 00:06:36.91\00:06:38.34 We are all looking for that God. 00:06:38.38\00:06:39.74 Every one of us is looking for 00:06:39.77\00:06:41.24 that God and we are looking for 00:06:41.27\00:06:43.04 the removal of fear from our 00:06:43.08\00:06:44.60 lives in from our hearts. 00:06:44.63\00:06:46.08 This Chapter reveals who that God is. 00:06:46.11\00:06:48.82 The problem is that humanity gets in the way of 00:06:48.85\00:06:52.10 Nebuchadnezzar and of us. 00:06:52.13\00:06:53.63 Humanity gets in the way and so what happens here, 00:06:53.67\00:06:56.77 is when he sees these young men defy him again, 00:06:56.81\00:06:59.84 really revealing this fearlessness that Nebuchadnezzar 00:06:59.87\00:07:03.16 really needs so badly. 00:07:03.20\00:07:05.00 When he sees them defy him again he gets very upset. 00:07:05.03\00:07:07.69 It says in verse 19, "then Nebuchadnezzar was full of" 00:07:07.73\00:07:11.08 "fury and the form of his visage was changed against" 00:07:11.11\00:07:14.43 "Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, therefore he spake," 00:07:14.46\00:07:17.17 "and commanded that they should heat the furnace seven" 00:07:17.20\00:07:19.87 "times hotter than needs to be heated. " 00:07:19.90\00:07:23.28 Yeah and then the command is given, throw them into the 00:07:23.31\00:07:27.15 fiery furnace, the mighty men are called in verse 20. 00:07:27.18\00:07:30.99 To take these young men and hurl them into this 00:07:31.02\00:07:35.69 extremely hot fiery furnace and it is amazing what 00:07:35.73\00:07:40.36 unfolds at this point. 00:07:40.40\00:07:41.40 Not just the mighty men, in verse 20, "the most" 00:07:41.43\00:07:43.92 "mighty men. " 00:07:43.96\00:07:45.60 Now the reason why this is significant is because you 00:07:45.63\00:07:48.36 have the strongest, the biggest, baddest men in the 00:07:48.40\00:07:51.10 kingdom of Babylon. 00:07:51.13\00:07:52.44 These are the guys that have conquered nations and they 00:07:52.48\00:07:54.51 come up to that furnace and they throw Shadrach, 00:07:54.55\00:07:57.83 Meshach, and Abednego into the flames of that furnace, 00:07:57.87\00:08:00.64 and then what happens to them? 00:08:00.68\00:08:01.82 Well, it is so hot that they are consumed themselves 00:08:01.85\00:08:05.40 and died because of the heat of the flames that they 00:08:05.43\00:08:08.94 came too close to and throwing them in. 00:08:08.98\00:08:11.18 You know the greatest trials in this life are going 00:08:11.22\00:08:14.12 to destroy us, the greatest trials we face are going 00:08:14.15\00:08:17.02 to consume us. 00:08:17.05\00:08:18.10 There is too much heat, there is too much evil, 00:08:18.14\00:08:20.66 there is too much pain in this world for us to survive. 00:08:20.69\00:08:23.00 It doesn't matter how strong or mighty we are, 00:08:23.04\00:08:24.57 there is no way we can survive unless we are willing to 00:08:24.61\00:08:28.65 go into the furnace with Jesus. 00:08:28.69\00:08:30.21 And that is why we want to go all the way with Jesus. 00:08:30.24\00:08:32.41 That is a powerful lesson that we see here as these 00:08:32.45\00:08:34.59 three young men are thrown into this furnace. 00:08:34.62\00:08:37.11 What an incredible story as it unfolds. 00:08:37.15\00:08:39.21 Nebuchadnezzar watches with 00:08:39.24\00:08:42.12 astonishment as suddenly he 00:08:42.15\00:08:45.49 recognizes that these men are 00:08:45.53\00:08:48.38 walking around in the fiery 00:08:48.41\00:08:51.20 furnace, but then as he looks he notices, he does a quick 00:08:51.23\00:08:55.24 headcount here, and not only does he see three living 00:08:55.28\00:08:59.48 individuals in the flames of fire, but he sees a fourth 00:08:59.52\00:09:03.71 individual and he says in verse 25, "it looks to me 00:09:03.74\00:09:07.90 like the son of God. " 00:09:07.93\00:09:10.03 Now there you go Ty, you mentioned earlier that 00:09:10.06\00:09:12.06 Nebuchadnezzar knew who this was. 00:09:12.10\00:09:13.70 He knew who God was, yet he did, but he needed the witness. 00:09:13.74\00:09:17.95 He needed to see God lived 00:09:17.99\00:09:20.42 out in the lives of God's followers. 00:09:20.46\00:09:23.04 There are people out there 00:09:23.08\00:09:24.20 friends, there are people out 00:09:24.24\00:09:25.29 there are witnessing and sharing believers. 00:09:25.33\00:09:27.56 Maybe you are a person who is looking for God and you have 00:09:27.59\00:09:30.62 heard all these truths of the Bible. 00:09:30.66\00:09:32.47 You have gone to the seminars and have understood these 00:09:32.51\00:09:35.70 prophecies, but you have not seen the people of God. 00:09:35.74\00:09:39.12 What I mean is, the witness of the Spirit of God, 00:09:39.16\00:09:43.07 but fearlessness of God, is not seen in the lives of 00:09:43.11\00:09:46.78 Church people, believers who profess to follow God. 00:09:46.81\00:09:49.88 That is what Nebuchadnezzar he's seeing right here. 00:09:49.92\00:09:52.78 He seen three people who were bound thrown into the 00:09:52.82\00:09:55.97 furnace, and now he sees them free walking with Jesus. 00:09:56.01\00:09:59.19 What that means is this, there are people on this earth 00:09:59.22\00:10:02.48 were so serious about their relationship with God that 00:10:02.52\00:10:05.30 no matter what trial comes their way, no matter how hot 00:10:05.33\00:10:08.08 the furnace gets, or how difficult life gets, 00:10:08.11\00:10:10.73 they are free because Jesus is with them. 00:10:10.76\00:10:13.31 Then we see here that is Nebuchadnezzar realizes what's 00:10:13.35\00:10:18.84 taking place, I mean just previously he is feeling 00:10:18.88\00:10:22.35 powerful, he is feeling arrogant, and feeling like he 00:10:22.39\00:10:25.83 can just do anything he wants to do. 00:10:25.86\00:10:27.01 You are certainly going to obey me or I'm going to kill you. 00:10:27.05\00:10:30.35 All of a sudden this king goes through a humbling, and 00:10:30.38\00:10:35.74 he realizes he has no power over these men. 00:10:35.77\00:10:38.10 There is a God who has power above and beyond his. 00:10:38.14\00:10:42.88 Who has charge of the situation. 00:10:42.92\00:10:44.48 Nebuchadnezzar, it dawns on him James, 00:10:44.51\00:10:48.42 that he is witnessing, not only the incredible integrity 00:10:48.45\00:10:54.38 of these young men, but he is witnessing that their God is 00:10:54.42\00:11:00.31 a God who is with them in their trials. 00:11:00.34\00:11:03.46 With them in their suffering, this is certainly a faint 00:11:03.50\00:11:08.29 Old Testament outline, a silhouette of what we see 00:11:08.32\00:11:11.80 taking place in such a beautiful form in the 00:11:11.83\00:11:15.27 incarnation and cross of Jesus Christ. 00:11:15.30\00:11:18.04 When we are in the fire of affliction, which we all are 00:11:18.08\00:11:22.36 as human beings, it is evident in Scripture that Jesus 00:11:22.40\00:11:26.65 does not abandon us, God does not abandon us. 00:11:26.69\00:11:29.94 He is with us in our trials, in our struggles. 00:11:29.98\00:11:33.09 He is literally with us taking us a step further. 00:11:33.13\00:11:36.65 He has come near to us in the sin problem as a whole. 00:11:36.68\00:11:40.84 Has identified with the human race, has become one of us 00:11:40.87\00:11:45.53 and went to the cross to bear the totality of all the weight 00:11:45.56\00:11:50.19 of sin on our behalf. 00:11:50.22\00:11:51.91 And let's face it Ty, what a contrast to the idea 00:11:51.95\00:11:54.08 if you become a Christian and accept Christ that all your 00:11:54.11\00:11:56.38 problems are going to go away. 00:11:56.41\00:11:57.50 That is just not the reality and millions of people on 00:11:57.53\00:12:00.91 this planet know that. 00:12:00.94\00:12:02.08 Billions of people on this planet know that their life is 00:12:02.12\00:12:06.93 not changed necessarily because they turned to God 00:12:06.97\00:12:11.00 and accept Him. 00:12:11.04\00:12:12.01 They do not need a God who 00:12:12.02\00:12:13.52 says if you turned to me I 00:12:13.55\00:12:15.15 will rain down blessings 00:12:15.19\00:12:16.94 from heaven and everything 00:12:16.97\00:12:18.66 economically is going to be fine and all of your problems 00:12:18.69\00:12:21.37 are going to be fixed. 00:12:21.41\00:12:22.38 They need a God who is going to be with them through the 00:12:22.39\00:12:24.94 trials and through the difficulties. 00:12:24.97\00:12:26.41 He is going to give them the peace that brings them above 00:12:26.44\00:12:29.67 that storm and allows them to have in their hearts, and 00:12:29.71\00:12:33.12 their lives, the joy that surpasses all the difficulties 00:12:33.16\00:12:36.54 and trials that we face. 00:12:36.58\00:12:37.83 In closing Chapter 3, Nebuchadnezzar has brought 00:12:37.87\00:12:41.30 exactly to the place he was brought to in Chapter 2 where 00:12:41.34\00:12:44.80 he is just praising God, but now I think he's praising God 00:12:44.84\00:12:48.27 just a few steps forward from where he was before. 00:12:48.30\00:12:52.77 Again God is working out the radical conversion of 00:12:52.80\00:12:56.11 Nebuchadnezzar, he is reaching into his heart. 00:12:56.15\00:12:59.39 He is seeking to win him to Himself and here he again 00:12:59.42\00:13:03.74 is brought to his knees before the most high God to 00:13:03.78\00:13:08.06 praise and worship Him. 00:13:08.10\00:13:09.53 He takes one more step friends, one more step. 00:13:09.57\00:13:11.81 That is what this is all about, taking one more step to 00:13:11.85\00:13:15.18 understand who God is, how He loves you, and what He wants 00:13:15.21\00:13:18.50 to do in your life. 00:13:18.54\00:13:19.83
