Hello friends and welcome 00:00:21.52\00:00:23.12 to Books of the Book. 00:00:23.15\00:00:24.41 We are studying the book 00:00:24.45\00:00:25.64 of Daniel, and we are in Daniel 00:00:25.67\00:00:27.40 of Chapter 3. 00:00:27.44\00:00:28.62 My name is James Rafferty! 00:00:28.65\00:00:29.62 And I'm Ty Gibson thank you for joining us for this 00:00:29.63\00:00:32.51 program on the book of Daniel. 00:00:32.54\00:00:34.00 It is one of our favorite 00:00:34.04\00:00:35.04 books in the Bible, James. 00:00:35.08\00:00:36.40 We are just always excited 00:00:36.44\00:00:37.72 to open its pages. 00:00:37.76\00:00:39.35 We have learned so far that the book of Daniel 00:00:39.39\00:00:42.74 runs on two tracks. 00:00:42.77\00:00:44.37 We have a story line that is unfolding of Daniel's 00:00:44.41\00:00:48.62 experience as a captive in Babylon. 00:00:48.66\00:00:50.92 Nebuchadnezzar's experience as an unbelieving heathen 00:00:50.95\00:00:55.08 king that God is relentlessly pursuing with His grace 00:00:55.12\00:00:59.09 and love to bring Nebuchadnezzar to the worship of the 00:00:59.12\00:01:03.06 one and only true God. 00:01:03.10\00:01:04.45 Then we have the prophecies that unfold as well as the 00:01:04.48\00:01:09.39 story of Daniel and Nebuchadnezzar unfolds. 00:01:09.43\00:01:13.51 It's incredible because what we are seeing so far 00:01:13.55\00:01:15.45 is that the prophecies and relational aspects of Daniel 00:01:15.48\00:01:19.09 interlock, they mesh together and come together as one. 00:01:19.12\00:01:22.49 Many times when you study the Bible, or when you study 00:01:22.52\00:01:26.24 prophecy, you are inclined to separate it from Christian 00:01:26.28\00:01:29.96 experience, relationship, practical Christianity. 00:01:30.00\00:01:33.12 We don't see that in the book of Daniel, 00:01:33.15\00:01:35.06 and we won't see it. 00:01:35.10\00:01:36.07 As you move down all the way through these chapters 00:01:36.08\00:01:38.19 we are going to see time and time again that they link 00:01:38.23\00:01:40.31 together, or connect together. 00:01:40.34\00:01:42.23 One of the main themes we are going to find in the book 00:01:42.27\00:01:44.93 of Daniel is this relationship theme. 00:01:44.97\00:01:47.25 I think we can say with certainty James not only because 00:01:47.28\00:01:52.56 of what we read in the Bible, but just observing ourselves 00:01:52.60\00:01:57.58 and people in their religious experiences, that knowledge 00:01:57.61\00:02:02.45 without an experience with God is actually dangerous. 00:02:02.48\00:02:07.25 I mean if we know all the prophecies backwards and forward 00:02:07.28\00:02:10.63 and we can prove what each point means, and interpret the 00:02:10.67\00:02:14.56 dreams and visions that we have in the prophetic books of 00:02:14.60\00:02:18.46 the Bible, but we don't know God in a personal, 00:02:18.50\00:02:22.62 living, relationship. 00:02:22.66\00:02:25.44 If we don't know the Lord Jesus Christ as personal Savior 00:02:25.47\00:02:29.25 and Lord, but we know all about the truth, then we are 00:02:29.29\00:02:33.04 lethal in dealing with people. 00:02:33.07\00:02:35.78 That's certainly proves true in Daniel Chapter 3. 00:02:35.81\00:02:38.67 What you have here is king 00:02:38.71\00:02:40.67 who has been convicted. 00:02:40.71\00:02:42.60 He is moving from one religion 00:02:42.64\00:02:44.77 to another, in a sense. 00:02:44.81\00:02:46.65 This king, Nebuchadnezzar, has had this incredible 00:02:46.68\00:02:51.12 interpretation delivered to him of this image he dreamed 00:02:51.16\00:02:55.91 about and couldn't remember. 00:02:55.94\00:02:57.31 Understanding this dream represents these different 00:02:57.35\00:03:00.84 kingdoms in this earth, going all the way down to the 00:03:00.88\00:03:04.34 very end of time. 00:03:04.37\00:03:06.36 Down to the time in which we live and beyond to the 00:03:06.40\00:03:08.85 second coming of Jesus Christ. 00:03:08.88\00:03:10.41 In that knowledge, Nebuchadnezzar is about to 00:03:10.45\00:03:13.96 deviate just a little bit, because it is all up here and 00:03:14.00\00:03:16.93 none of it has come down here. 00:03:16.97\00:03:18.44 He has an intellectual conversion in Chapter 2, 00:03:18.47\00:03:22.46 God through Daniel's interpretation, God explicitly 00:03:22.50\00:03:26.42 told Nebuchadnezzar, your dream of this vision represents 00:03:26.45\00:03:32.37 a session of kingdoms, Babylon is the head of gold. 00:03:32.40\00:03:35.57 Only the head of gold, 00:03:35.60\00:03:36.93 only the head of gold Nebuchadnezzar. 00:03:36.97\00:03:38.88 Babylon does not continue on down through history. 00:03:38.91\00:03:43.05 Well immediately, as Chapter 3 opens, we see Nebuchadnezzar 00:03:43.08\00:03:47.95 defying the vision that God gave. 00:03:47.99\00:03:51.26 In verse 1 Nebuchadnezzar the king, made an image of gold. 00:03:51.30\00:03:55.20 Not an image as God revealed it to him, of gold, silver, 00:03:55.24\00:03:58.97 brass, iron, iron mixed with clay and finally God's kingdom 00:03:59.01\00:04:02.71 rising to consume all of the kingdoms and be the 00:04:02.75\00:04:07.04 everlasting kingdom. 00:04:07.07\00:04:08.38 No, Nebuchadnezzar wants his kingdom to be perpetual. 00:04:08.41\00:04:12.83 He wants it to continue on. 00:04:12.87\00:04:14.20 He is acting out his arrogance, and he is acting out 00:04:14.23\00:04:18.30 his insecurities, his fears. 00:04:18.34\00:04:20.38 That is a really good point Ty because I believe that God 00:04:20.41\00:04:22.70 has put eternity in all of our hearts. 00:04:22.73\00:04:24.60 That's what Ecclesiastics tells us. 00:04:24.63\00:04:26.43 God wants us to live forever, but it's insecure in the 00:04:26.46\00:04:29.96 sense that we are seeking to accomplish that goal without 00:04:29.99\00:04:33.46 God, which is impossible. 00:04:33.49\00:04:34.96 Nebuchadnezzar is seeking to accomplish that goal without 00:04:35.00\00:04:38.02 God so when he does this, he is defining what God has 00:04:38.05\00:04:41.04 revealed to him. 00:04:41.08\00:04:42.05 Now what we need to recognize is that one of the reasons 00:04:42.06\00:04:44.30 why Nebuchadnezzar does this is because he is afraid. 00:04:44.33\00:04:47.18 He is afraid for the future and he is afraid of his 00:04:47.21\00:04:49.74 kingdom coming to an end because that means he is going 00:04:49.77\00:04:52.27 to come to an end. 00:04:52.30\00:04:53.50 None of us want come to an end, we all want a future 00:04:53.53\00:04:56.36 and a hope. 00:04:56.40\00:04:57.65 God is trying to bring Nebuchadnezzar to the place, 00:04:57.68\00:04:59.97 first of all, where he realizes without Him, 00:05:00.01\00:05:02.47 that is Nebuchadnezzar without Me, without God, 00:05:02.51\00:05:04.94 you do not have a future and a hope. 00:05:04.97\00:05:07.45 Nebuchadnezzar in defying that revelation, that vision, 00:05:07.48\00:05:11.89 is defying his need for God. 00:05:11.92\00:05:14.76 In Hebrews 2:14,15, we are told that every human being 00:05:14.79\00:05:21.45 lives their whole life 00:05:21.48\00:05:23.75 time in fear of death. 00:05:23.79\00:05:26.03 It is a great unknown. 00:05:26.06\00:05:28.23 We grow old and our lives finally expire. 00:05:28.27\00:05:33.38 The Bible is telling us very clearly that human beings are 00:05:33.41\00:05:38.15 just haunted with this sense of apprehension about death. 00:05:38.19\00:05:42.89 Fear of this vast unknown, beyond the grave, people don't 00:05:42.92\00:05:47.58 want to die, Nebuchadnezzar doesn't want to die. 00:05:47.62\00:05:49.79 He doesn't want his kingdom to come to an end. 00:05:49.82\00:05:51.95 He wants it to be perpetuated. 00:05:51.99\00:05:53.65 Yes, and it is interesting because in verse 15 of 00:05:53.69\00:05:56.37 Hebrews Chapter 2, it says, 00:05:56.40\00:05:58.01 "and God has sent His Son 00:05:58.04\00:06:00.60 "to deliver them who through" 00:06:00.63\00:06:03.12 "fear of death for all of their lifetime are 00:06:03.15\00:06:05.12 subject to bondage. " 00:06:05.15\00:06:06.70 We think it is freeing, it is liberating to do what we want, 00:06:06.73\00:06:10.39 to live the way we want to live and have God out of the 00:06:10.42\00:06:13.45 picture, and God is saying no you are actually in bondage. 00:06:13.49\00:06:16.49 You are in bondage when you are leaving Me out of the 00:06:16.52\00:06:19.90 picture because to be totally taken in and controlled by 00:06:19.94\00:06:23.29 Sin and sinful mess is to be in bondage. 00:06:23.32\00:06:27.38 Nebuchadnezzar is in bondage, he is in bondage to his own 00:06:27.41\00:06:30.10 fears in Chapter 3 and God has come to deliver him 00:06:30.13\00:06:33.82 from those fears. 00:06:33.86\00:06:35.00 Nebuchadnezzar makes this image because he is afraid. 00:06:35.04\00:06:38.25 The people who are commanded to worship this image, 00:06:38.29\00:06:41.47 worship the image because they are afraid. 00:06:41.50\00:06:45.07 They are told by Nebuchadnezzar that when you hear, 00:06:45.11\00:06:48.79 when you hear the sounds of the music, you need to bow 00:06:48.83\00:06:52.48 down to worship or you will be thrown 00:06:52.51\00:06:54.37 into a fiery furnace. 00:06:54.41\00:06:56.64 So the people are afraid, Nebuchadnezzar is afraid, 00:06:56.67\00:06:59.31 we are afraid. 00:06:59.34\00:07:00.54 It doesn't matter how many hats we wear, 00:07:00.58\00:07:02.60 how many bumper stickers we put on our cars and vehicles 00:07:02.63\00:07:05.75 that say "no fear", the fact of the matter is 00:07:05.79\00:07:08.01 we are scared to death. 00:07:08.04\00:07:09.87 Especially of death, we are scared to death of death. 00:07:09.90\00:07:13.35 In Romans Chapter 8 the apostle Paul gives us this 00:07:13.38\00:07:17.28 incredible insight where he tells us that when we are 00:07:17.32\00:07:21.66 born again, when we yield our lives over to Christ, 00:07:21.69\00:07:25.54 one of the things that God achieves in the human heart, 00:07:25.57\00:07:29.38 he's He breaks that bondage of fear. 00:07:29.42\00:07:32.64 He says there in Chapter 8 of Romans, "you did not receive" 00:07:32.68\00:07:37.37 "the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the" 00:07:37.40\00:07:42.06 "Spirit of adoption whereby you cry, Abba Father. " 00:07:42.10\00:07:45.77 "The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that" 00:07:45.80\00:07:48.43 "we are the children of God. " 00:07:48.47\00:07:49.54 There is a deliverance from fear that comes to the human 00:07:49.58\00:07:53.97 Spirit, to the human heart when we give and yield our lives 00:07:54.01\00:07:58.37 over to Christ, over to God. 00:07:58.40\00:08:00.81 We are free, we are liberated from that fear. 00:08:00.84\00:08:03.28 And notice that, that freedom from fear connects us to 00:08:03.31\00:08:07.76 God as our Father. 00:08:07.79\00:08:08.93 There is a direct connection taking place there. 00:08:08.97\00:08:10.85 Nebuchadnezzar is denying the One and embracing the other. 00:08:10.88\00:08:13.68 God wants to break his hold on the one, that is fear, 00:08:13.72\00:08:17.21 so that he can be ushered into this relationship with God 00:08:17.24\00:08:20.70 as his Father. 00:08:20.73\00:08:22.12 He is going to do this in a very unique way. 00:08:22.16\00:08:23.51 God is looking for people, who are so committed to Him, 00:08:23.55\00:08:27.39 that they can reveal the freedom of fear. 00:08:27.42\00:08:31.71 The freedom from death that God has promised to give us. 00:08:31.74\00:08:34.77 He has given us as a gift through Jesus Christ. 00:08:34.81\00:08:37.00 That is what He is looking for in Daniel Chapter 3. 00:08:37.04\00:08:39.16 When Nebuchadnezzar defies the dream that God gave to him, 00:08:39.20\00:08:45.13 I think it is important to note that God doesn't turn 00:08:45.16\00:08:49.40 against Nebuchadnezzar. 00:08:49.44\00:08:51.05 He continues to pursue him because God is trying to get 00:08:51.09\00:08:55.42 into Nebuchadnezzar's heart to liberate him from fear. 00:08:55.46\00:08:59.76 He is trying to lead this king to conversion, 00:08:59.80\00:09:03.88 so God pursues him relentlessly. 00:09:03.92\00:09:07.27 The hound of Heaven, He's on Nebuchadnezzar's trail and He 00:09:07.30\00:09:11.95 is not letting up. 00:09:11.99\00:09:13.15 Amen and what I really like about this Chapter. 00:09:13.18\00:09:15.32 This picture that we have here 00:09:15.36\00:09:17.20 it warns all of us, friends, 00:09:17.24\00:09:19.78 how dangerous it can be to be 00:09:19.81\00:09:22.32 half converted. 00:09:22.36\00:09:23.41 To be intellectually converted, in what ever religious 00:09:23.45\00:09:25.69 belief we have, to be intellectually converted but 00:09:25.72\00:09:27.93 don't have a heart experience with God. 00:09:27.96\00:09:30.49 because what Nebuchadnezzar does here is 00:09:30.52\00:09:32.98 he seeks to enforce his understanding of religion, 00:09:33.02\00:09:36.69 his understanding of worship on the multitudes. 00:09:36.73\00:09:40.36 That is what happens with us. 00:09:40.40\00:09:41.76 It doesn't matter that we are not necessarily a king, 00:09:41.79\00:09:43.85 not necessarily a president, we are not necessarily in 00:09:43.88\00:09:46.94 power, even if we are a parent, or a sibling, no matter 00:09:46.98\00:09:50.14 what our station in life, if we are only half converted 00:09:50.17\00:09:53.67 we will try to take our religious views and impose them 00:09:53.71\00:09:57.17 upon others. 00:09:57.21\00:09:59.01 This is one of the principal warnings that we find, 00:09:59.05\00:10:01.68 here in Daniel Chapter 3. 00:10:01.71\00:10:03.72 The exercise of force is 00:10:03.76\00:10:05.52 contrary to the character 00:10:05.56\00:10:07.26 of God, the exercise of 00:10:07.29\00:10:09.22 coercion, to put pressure 00:10:09.25\00:10:11.11 on people to manipulate them, or pressure them into a 00:10:11.14\00:10:16.33 acceptance of whatever our views happened to be. 00:10:16.36\00:10:19.34 Even if our views are right and provable from Scripture. 00:10:19.37\00:10:22.54 We know the certainty of these things. 00:10:22.58\00:10:24.46 No matter how deeply convicted we are, we can be absolutely 00:10:24.49\00:10:29.49 certain that when we are tending toward coercing others 00:10:29.52\00:10:34.28 into subjection to our views, the Spirit of God is not 00:10:34.31\00:10:39.03 governing those impulses to control other people. 00:10:39.07\00:10:41.85 Another thing that is really significant in this Chapter 00:10:41.88\00:10:43.94 is the place of music Ty, in worship, in force. 00:10:43.97\00:10:47.81 Music is a powerful in its influence. 00:10:47.85\00:10:50.57 Have you noticed that no matter where you go in society, 00:10:50.60\00:10:53.41 at lease let's say in the Western society, I am sure in 00:10:53.44\00:10:56.21 other societies also, that music is huge. 00:10:56.25\00:10:59.50 Music is a huge influence and a huge factor. 00:10:59.54\00:11:02.73 You can find people doing, under the influence of music, 00:11:02.76\00:11:06.68 what they wouldn't do if the music stopped. 00:11:06.72\00:11:09.78 Try it out yourself some time. 00:11:09.81\00:11:11.07 You find in grocery stores, you find in department stores, 00:11:11.11\00:11:15.29 you find in the community, the workplace, where every you 00:11:15.33\00:11:19.48 find music, music, music. 00:11:19.51\00:11:20.93 We were recently building a home and we had contractors 00:11:20.97\00:11:23.85 they were coming to do sheet rock, and do the plumbing, 00:11:23.88\00:11:27.72 and I'm telling you what, you had to make sure and lay 00:11:27.76\00:11:31.15 down the law about music because if not you would have 00:11:31.19\00:11:34.58 one guy upstairs blasting maybe some rock 'n roll. 00:11:34.61\00:11:37.94 Another guy downstairs blasting some other types of music. 00:11:37.97\00:11:40.92 Another guy over here in a corner blasting, you had 3 or 4 00:11:40.95\00:11:43.86 different types of music. 00:11:43.89\00:11:45.16 What they are doing is working, in a sense they are trying 00:11:45.20\00:11:48.54 to get their minds off the fact that they are laboring. 00:11:48.58\00:11:52.35 Their minds are totally submerged in this music and 00:11:52.38\00:11:56.12 it is taking them into another world. 00:11:56.15\00:11:57.17 In Daniel Chapter 3 James, 00:11:57.21\00:11:59.55 this is the storyline that unfolds. 00:11:59.58\00:12:02.66 Nebuchadnezzar imposing force, using coercion to enforce 00:12:02.70\00:12:08.59 his religious convictions. 00:12:08.63\00:12:10.92 Nebuchadnezzar tells the multitudes of his kingdom, 00:12:10.95\00:12:14.62 when you hear the music bow down and worship. 00:12:14.66\00:12:16.42 If you do not bow down and worship you will be killed. 00:12:16.45\00:12:19.08 You will be executed, so that is the backdrop that is 00:12:19.12\00:12:21.71 happening in here. 00:12:21.75\00:12:22.95 As you have pointed out, Nebuchadnezzar is being governed 00:12:22.99\00:12:25.94 by fear, the multitudes are being governed by fear, 00:12:25.97\00:12:28.88 but there it emerges a group of people here. 00:12:28.92\00:12:32.01 A small little nucleus, just three guys. 00:12:32.05\00:12:35.07 These three guys, Meshach, Shadrach, and Abednego emerge 00:12:35.10\00:12:39.66 in this story and it becomes evident very quickly here 00:12:39.70\00:12:44.22 that they are not governed by fear. 00:12:44.26\00:12:46.43 In fact they face it squarely and they move forward with 00:12:46.47\00:12:50.48 their convictions, obviously convictions that are 00:12:50.51\00:12:54.04 diametrically opposed to what the king is imposing. 00:12:54.08\00:12:57.97 Convictions that are not to be manipulated or coerced. 00:12:58.01\00:13:01.86 We could call these guys a remnant. 00:13:01.90\00:13:03.59 The principal of remnant is found in the 00:13:03.62\00:13:06.02 book of Revelation another prophetic book. 00:13:06.05\00:13:08.38 We can call these guys a remnant because the word means 00:13:08.42\00:13:11.15 the remainder, those that remain. 00:13:11.19\00:13:13.00 These were the ones who remained standing when everyone 00:13:13.03\00:13:17.19 else bow down, they remained. 00:13:17.23\00:13:18.93 They remained standing, but more than that, they remained 00:13:18.96\00:13:22.56 faithful to God, that was the main point of their standing. 00:13:22.60\00:13:26.16 They weren't standing to be obstinate, or stubborn, 00:13:26.20\00:13:28.44 to directly oppose the king or his laws. 00:13:28.48\00:13:31.86 They were not seeking to draw attention to themselves. 00:13:31.89\00:13:34.53 To be different or for people to look to them and go woo! 00:13:34.57\00:13:37.23 They were remaining because they were wanting to remain 00:13:37.26\00:13:40.57 faithful to God and so they stood when everyone else bowed. 00:13:40.61\00:13:43.89 They didn't come under the influence of music, 00:13:43.92\00:13:45.49 the influence of amusement, the influence that the world 00:13:45.52\00:13:48.97 sought to bring upon them, but they stood and remained 00:13:49.00\00:13:52.52 faithful to God by refusing to worship another God 00:13:52.55\00:13:56.03 but the true God. 00:13:56.07\00:13:57.39 When we come back, don't go away, we are going to find out 00:13:57.43\00:14:00.33 exactly what happened with these 3 young men. 00:14:00.36\00:14:03.20
