Hello friends and welcome to 00:00:22.03\00:00:23.70 Books of the Book. 00:00:23.73\00:00:24.98 We are studying the 00:00:25.02\00:00:26.20 book of Daniel and we are in 00:00:26.23\00:00:27.63 Daniel Chapter 2. 00:00:27.66\00:00:29.66 My name is James Rafferty and I am Ty Gibson, James's co-host 00:00:29.70\00:00:33.73 for this series of programs on the book of Daniel. 00:00:33.76\00:00:36.23 We just love the book of Daniel 00:00:36.26\00:00:38.27 James, because it is not only a 00:00:38.30\00:00:40.30 prophetic book that points 00:00:40.34\00:00:42.60 forward to events that pertain 00:00:42.64\00:00:44.74 to the end of human history 00:00:44.77\00:00:46.51 which ushers in the second 00:00:46.54\00:00:48.21 coming of Jesus and that glorious period into the future 00:00:48.24\00:00:51.55 that we all long for. 00:00:51.59\00:00:53.12 We love the book of Daniel because it is a book that 00:00:53.15\00:00:57.02 presents vital principles for character development, vital 00:00:57.06\00:01:01.76 principles to guide our lives spiritually and to have a 00:01:01.79\00:01:06.46 relationship with God. 00:01:06.49\00:01:07.66 It is a book that chronicles a story of Daniel's relationship 00:01:07.69\00:01:12.53 with God and it is a book that Chronicles the relationship 00:01:12.57\00:01:17.38 of King Nebuchadnezzar with God, a relationship that 00:01:17.41\00:01:20.22 King Nebuchadnezzar, at first, never even knew he was having. 00:01:20.25\00:01:24.10 God was pursuing him and finally got this king's attention and 00:01:24.13\00:01:27.95 Nebuchadnezzar became a worshiper of the true 00:01:27.98\00:01:32.23 God of heaven. 00:01:32.26\00:01:33.25 It is a book that shows the heart of God. 00:01:33.28\00:01:35.44 It shows us how to have this relationship with God. 00:01:35.48\00:01:37.74 We see that especially now as we move into Daniel Chapter 2. 00:01:37.78\00:01:42.21 We've begun to see a picture of God right here in Daniel 1. 00:01:42.25\00:01:46.82 As we move to Daniel chapter 2 this picture begins to unfold. 00:01:46.85\00:01:51.39 We looked at in the first chapter the idea that God was 00:01:51.43\00:01:55.84 going into captivity with His people, He was afflicted by 00:01:55.88\00:01:59.76 their afflictions and He was humbling Himself before this 00:01:59.80\00:02:03.64 heathen monarch allowing Himself to be small in the 00:02:03.68\00:02:09.25 sight of this ruler. 00:02:09.28\00:02:10.74 Now in Daniel chapter 2 with Nebuchadnezzar, in the 2nd year 00:02:10.77\00:02:16.60 of his reign, it says in verse 1 of Daniel 2. 00:02:16.63\00:02:19.17 Nebuchadnezzar has a dream and in this dream he was troubled. 00:02:19.20\00:02:23.84 So much so that he wakes up, perhaps in a cold sweat, 00:02:23.88\00:02:27.19 he wakes up in the middle of this dream but he can't remember 00:02:27.23\00:02:31.01 what he dreamed. 00:02:31.04\00:02:32.31 Now here is a picture of it. 00:02:32.35\00:02:33.74 We are going to find out if this dream is of God. 00:02:33.78\00:02:36.39 We are going to find out that Nebuchadnezzar was given this 00:02:36.42\00:02:39.53 dream by Divine Revelation. 00:02:39.56\00:02:41.43 We are also going to find out the reason why he could not 00:02:41.46\00:02:43.80 remember it, is also from God. 00:02:43.83\00:02:45.33 God gives Nebuchadnezzar a dream then he cannot remember. 00:02:45.36\00:02:47.99 What is the purpose? 00:02:48.02\00:02:48.99 The purpose is God is seeking to awaken Nebuchadnezzar to his 00:02:49.00\00:02:53.93 need of something more than just these gods of 00:02:53.97\00:02:57.94 stone and wood. 00:02:57.98\00:02:59.60 There are two things going on here. 00:02:59.64\00:03:00.80 There is as we said in the previous program, 00:03:00.84\00:03:02.19 in Daniel chapter 1. 00:03:02.23\00:03:03.94 The whole book of Daniel runs along two tracks, if you will. 00:03:03.97\00:03:07.26 There is this storyline of Daniel's experience as a captive 00:03:07.29\00:03:10.32 of Babylon, and a story of Nebuchadnezzar's conversion. 00:03:10.35\00:03:13.34 Then there are the prophecies that unfold. 00:03:13.38\00:03:15.90 Well Daniel 2 reveals that there are 2 things taking place 00:03:15.93\00:03:20.23 here, we tend to see that Daniel 00:03:20.27\00:03:22.87 2 each just revealing world history in advance. 00:03:22.91\00:03:25.39 And it is, but not only is world history, 00:03:25.42\00:03:29.44 in advance, coming to our attention in the prophecy 00:03:29.47\00:03:33.76 of Daniel 2, God is also, in the process of getting 00:03:33.79\00:03:38.04 Nebuchadnezzar's attention. 00:03:38.08\00:03:40.22 Speaking to him, so He is working for the conversion 00:03:40.26\00:03:44.44 of king Nebuchadnezzar and simultaneously He is giving a 00:03:44.48\00:03:48.84 prophecy to the world and all who will read down to our very 00:03:48.87\00:03:52.81 day, could read this prophecy and learn these vital truths. 00:03:52.85\00:03:56.76 I think is incredible that God is pursuing this king 00:03:56.79\00:04:00.17 in this manner. 00:04:00.21\00:04:01.21 Now most people in the world I won't say most people 00:04:01.24\00:04:04.19 because I don't know most people 00:04:04.23\00:04:05.20 I'm not a judge and I don't know most people. 00:04:05.21\00:04:06.72 But a lot of people in this 00:04:06.76\00:04:08.68 world have no need of God. 00:04:08.71\00:04:10.40 Nebuchadnezzar has no 00:04:10.44\00:04:12.10 need of God. 00:04:12.13\00:04:13.16 So he thinks! 00:04:13.19\00:04:14.16 He is a ruler with absolute 00:04:14.18\00:04:16.09 power and he has all the wealth that money can buy. 00:04:16.12\00:04:19.94 He has no need of God, he has a dream, 00:04:19.97\00:04:21.43 he can't remember the dream, but it really troubles him. 00:04:21.46\00:04:24.07 Have you ever had a bad dream you can't, you wake up and are 00:04:24.10\00:04:26.67 just troubled and perhaps you can't even remember it, 00:04:26.71\00:04:29.24 yet you feel it's significant? 00:04:29.27\00:04:30.25 He has a dream and can't remember that dream. 00:04:30.29\00:04:32.46 He know is it significant, he knows it is. 00:04:32.50\00:04:34.60 It troubles him and he calls for all his wiseman and they all 00:04:34.64\00:04:38.04 come in and he basically tells them I had a dream in want you 00:04:38.07\00:04:41.44 to tell me what it is. 00:04:41.47\00:04:43.14 They cannot do it. 00:04:43.18\00:04:44.78 Well they have no idea what his dream was of course. 00:04:44.82\00:04:47.41 So here is a man who is used to getting his way. 00:04:47.44\00:04:49.97 A man who has everything at his fingertips that he needs and 00:04:50.00\00:04:53.56 now he has a need for something that is really troubling him. 00:04:53.59\00:04:57.11 And no one can deliver his need. 00:04:57.14\00:05:00.83 No one in his kingdom that can take care on his need. 00:05:00.86\00:05:04.59 Or so he thinks, so he calls all the wiseman before him, 00:05:04.63\00:05:08.33 assuming that in their great 00:05:08.36\00:05:10.72 Babylonian education and wisdom 00:05:10.75\00:05:13.14 and the fact that they are in 00:05:13.17\00:05:14.91 touch with Babylonian gods, 00:05:14.94\00:05:16.60 he assumes that in answer is forthcoming, but they repeatedly 00:05:16.64\00:05:20.89 tell him king, tell us the dream 00:05:20.92\00:05:23.14 we'll tell you the interpretation. 00:05:23.17\00:05:25.32 The king says no, you tell me the dream so I know that the 00:05:25.36\00:05:29.96 interpretation that you give me is actually true. 00:05:30.00\00:05:32.75 Nobody can help him in the Babylonian realm of knowledge. 00:05:32.78\00:05:37.05 The Babylonian realm of religion and spirituality, but then 00:05:37.09\00:05:41.21 there is that captive Daniel, he is there behind the scenes 00:05:41.24\00:05:44.82 and he is not brought in at first, he is not one of the 00:05:44.86\00:05:48.34 wisemen that are brought before the king at this point. 00:05:48.38\00:05:52.66 He is pursuing his education, his three-year university 00:05:52.70\00:05:56.42 education that Nebuchadnezzar has plugged him into. 00:05:56.46\00:06:00.12 Absolutely, Nebuchadnezzar was giving him 3 years, according 00:06:00.15\00:06:03.39 to Daniel 1:5, that he would be nourished, provided for, 00:06:03.42\00:06:06.62 educated and then he would come in at the end of that time 00:06:06.66\00:06:09.42 and he would be tested, but going back to your point Ty, 00:06:09.45\00:06:12.18 and it is a powerful one. 00:06:12.22\00:06:13.75 Nebuchadnezzar is now feeling his need. 00:06:13.78\00:06:16.28 Nebuchadnezzar is recognizing just a little bit, that all the 00:06:16.32\00:06:21.68 power in the world, and all the money in the world, 00:06:21.71\00:06:24.48 and all the education of the world, cannot satisfy 00:06:24.51\00:06:27.24 our deepest needs. 00:06:27.28\00:06:28.65 This is the message in Daniel Chapter 2. 00:06:28.69\00:06:31.23 It doesn't matter how powerful you are, it doesn't matter 00:06:31.26\00:06:33.78 how educated you are, it doesn't matter how rich you are 00:06:33.82\00:06:36.30 none of that can satisfy your deepest need. 00:06:36.34\00:06:39.76 God is revealing this to Nebuchadnezzar, He is showing 00:06:39.80\00:06:44.26 Nebuchadnezzar through a dream. 00:06:44.30\00:06:45.87 Through a dream! 00:06:45.90\00:06:47.47 Nebuchadnezzar he is not getting it yet of course, he's upset, 00:06:47.51\00:06:51.39 he's mad. Okay, here's a king who he is 00:06:51.43\00:06:55.11 throwing a temper tantrum. 00:06:55.15\00:06:56.12 Here is someone who is use to getting his way and he is upset 00:06:56.13\00:06:59.14 and what does he do? 00:06:59.17\00:07:00.14 He sends out a decree to all the wisemen in Babylon, 00:07:00.15\00:07:02.47 your dead! 00:07:02.50\00:07:03.73 You are going to be killed by morning. 00:07:03.77\00:07:05.99 So this news comes, of course, to Daniel and he is 3 friends. 00:07:06.03\00:07:09.77 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego because those who are 00:07:09.80\00:07:14.18 commissioned to take the lives of all the wisemen show up 00:07:14.22\00:07:18.56 at their place of living. 00:07:18.59\00:07:21.82 They say to them, we have got to execute all the wiseman of 00:07:21.86\00:07:27.20 Babylon and you are among them. 00:07:27.23\00:07:29.08 Daniel knows that his God is a revealer of secrets that His God 00:07:29.12\00:07:35.87 can in fact give not only the dream, but the interpretation 00:07:35.90\00:07:42.61 of the dream. 00:07:42.65\00:07:43.62 This is incredible! Daniel presupposes that God is 00:07:43.63\00:07:48.98 able to solve this problem. 00:07:49.02\00:07:51.15 He believes that the Lord can and will intervene so he calls 00:07:51.18\00:07:55.92 upon God in prayer with his friends, that God in mercy, 00:07:55.95\00:08:00.65 will intervene. 00:08:00.69\00:08:02.48 You know what is really interesting, don't you think 00:08:02.52\00:08:05.09 that Daniel probably thought that God has a purpose 00:08:05.12\00:08:07.66 in sending me to Babylon. 00:08:07.69\00:08:09.21 God has a purpose in everything that is happening here. 00:08:09.24\00:08:12.93 It looks bad, but God has a purpose. 00:08:12.96\00:08:14.33 When this decree comes forth rather than being afraid, 00:08:14.36\00:08:17.96 because he is in this 3 years of training, not really part of 00:08:18.00\00:08:20.51 the wiseman yet, he is in this 3 years of training. 00:08:20.55\00:08:23.05 So he says when this decree comes forth, 00:08:23.08\00:08:24.80 he says could this be it? 00:08:24.84\00:08:26.40 Could this be it? He is not really so much 00:08:26.43\00:08:29.51 afraid of the decree because in his heart he knows God has 00:08:29.54\00:08:33.94 a purpose and so rather than say oh no and getting scared, 00:08:33.97\00:08:38.33 he says, what's troubling the king? 00:08:38.37\00:08:40.26 What's the king's problem? 00:08:40.30\00:08:42.35 Maybe this is an opportunity for God to help Nebuchadnezzar. 00:08:42.38\00:08:48.55 With that kind of an attitude he moves into mode 2. 00:08:48.58\00:08:52.10 Of course they give him the time 00:08:52.14\00:08:53.11 the opportunity, the king does, he moves into mode 2. 00:08:53.12\00:08:55.48 Let's have a prayer meeting. 00:08:55.52\00:08:56.63 Because Daniel doesn't know what is going on. 00:08:56.66\00:08:58.10 I love the way that Daniel 2:18 describes the approach of Daniel 00:08:58.13\00:09:05.93 and his 3 friends to the Lord. 00:09:05.96\00:09:08.79 It says that they might seek mercies from the God of heaven. 00:09:08.83\00:09:13.78 Daniel and his friends have a view of the character of God 00:09:13.82\00:09:18.74 that it's just beautiful. 00:09:18.78\00:09:19.94 They do not see God the way the pagan nations see God 00:09:19.97\00:09:25.46 as a vindictive tyrant and a micro managing control freak 00:09:25.50\00:09:30.95 kind of ruler. 00:09:30.99\00:09:32.12 Daniel thinks of God and says God is the kind of God who with 00:09:32.15\00:09:36.73 tender mercies we can call upon. 00:09:36.76\00:09:39.11 We can get on our knees before this God, tell Him of our needs, 00:09:39.15\00:09:43.93 and He will hear our prayers and be eager to answer our prayers. 00:09:43.97\00:09:48.10 Let's clarify something here, Ty for viewing audience to make it 00:09:48.13\00:09:52.22 very, very clear, Daniel and his 3 friends are no better 00:09:52.26\00:09:55.86 than anybody else, they are no better 00:09:55.89\00:09:57.14 then the wisemen. 00:09:57.17\00:09:58.16 They are humans, but the point 00:09:58.20\00:10:00.76 is that they are humans who see 00:10:00.80\00:10:03.75 God in a different way than the 00:10:03.78\00:10:06.70 others do. 00:10:06.74\00:10:07.77 They reach out to God, 00:10:07.80\00:10:09.75 desiring mercy from God, 00:10:09.78\00:10:12.12 in fact anyone can do that. 00:10:12.16\00:10:14.43 What we found here, what we find here is that initially 00:10:14.46\00:10:18.40 verse 18, he is seeking mercies from God that Daniel and his 00:10:21.22\00:10:25.34 fellows should not perish with the rest of the 00:10:25.38\00:10:28.08 wiseman of Babylon. 00:10:28.12\00:10:29.36 Even in Daniel, and even in believers, there are these 00:10:29.40\00:10:35.25 selfish aspects of our nature that are present in our 00:10:35.28\00:10:41.10 approach to God. 00:10:41.13\00:10:42.14 They're perishing but we need to pray that we do not perish 00:10:42.18\00:10:46.17 with them, but you know what happens when God's mercy is 00:10:46.21\00:10:50.17 revealed? When God sheds His light and truth? 00:10:50.20\00:10:53.29 When God gives us more of an understanding of who He is 00:10:53.33\00:10:55.50 and what He is doing? How He is orchestrating things? 00:10:55.54\00:10:57.68 Do you know what happens? 00:10:57.71\00:10:58.68 Verse 24, "therefore when Daniel went in unto Arioch," 00:10:58.69\00:11:02.17 this is after he gets the understanding of the dream, 00:11:02.20\00:11:05.62 he praises God and thanks God it says when he goes into Arioch 00:11:05.65\00:11:09.30 "whom the king had ordained to destroy the wisemen of Babylon: 00:11:09.33\00:11:12.94 he went and said thus unto him; Destroy not," who? 00:11:12.98\00:11:18.63 the wisemen of Babylon. 00:11:18.66\00:11:20.15 The wisemen of Babylon! Do you see how the love of God 00:11:20.19\00:11:23.74 in the mercy of God actually eradicates every visage of 00:11:23.77\00:11:27.28 selfishness from our heart. 00:11:27.32\00:11:28.29 So even as we are seeking God and following God and believers 00:11:28.30\00:11:32.93 in God, those aspects of selfishness that are there, even 00:11:32.97\00:11:37.66 those are diminished by God's mercy. 00:11:37.69\00:11:39.09 Yet we have to remember these were Daniel's captors. 00:11:39.12\00:11:42.28 Daniel is a slave in a foreign 00:11:42.32\00:11:44.59 land, Daniel finds himself 00:11:44.63\00:11:46.83 in a very unpleasant situation. 00:11:46.87\00:11:50.25 He could fear it easily adopt an attitude of antagonism 00:11:50.29\00:11:54.07 against the wisemen of Babylon. 00:11:54.11\00:11:57.07 He has no spiritual agreement with obviously, and he could 00:11:57.11\00:12:01.37 adopt an attitude of prejudiced 00:12:01.40\00:12:02.77 and arrogance, he could ask the Lord, hey God I want to 00:12:02.80\00:12:06.31 understand this, just preserve me and my 3 friends and go 00:12:06.35\00:12:09.82 ahead and destroy the rest of them. 00:12:09.86\00:12:11.17 Yeah, self preservation. All those religions are bad 00:12:11.20\00:12:13.44 my religion is good. Yeah exactly! 00:12:13.48\00:12:14.54 All those denominations are bad, my denomination is good. 00:12:14.58\00:12:16.75 Who cares about them? 00:12:16.79\00:12:19.33 What's beautiful here James, that in verse 24, Daniel shifts 00:12:19.36\00:12:24.00 his attention to preserving, preserving the 00:12:24.04\00:12:27.77 wiseman of Babylon. 00:12:27.80\00:12:28.93 Why? Because of the grace of God because of the mercy of God. 00:12:28.96\00:12:32.57 This is the key. 00:12:32.60\00:12:34.26 This is not a natural phenomenon 00:12:34.30\00:12:36.03 we cannot be as Daniel was 00:12:36.06\00:12:38.23 naturally, Daniel it seems 00:12:38.27\00:12:40.02 the hint in verse 18, 00:12:40.06\00:12:41.75 is Daniel it seems is not 00:12:41.78\00:12:43.04 necessarily that way. 00:12:43.08\00:12:44.27 But one more of the mercy, and more of the grace, and more of 00:12:44.31\00:12:48.60 the blessing of God come upon us then more of the self is lost. 00:12:48.64\00:12:52.90 It's diminished more and more and it is powerful because 00:12:52.93\00:12:56.59 you see as Daniel continues on you see he is giving an answer 00:12:56.63\00:13:00.77 to the king, and an answer to Arioch, and you see as he is 00:13:00.80\00:13:04.21 brought in before the king, in fact just in the context of 00:13:04.25\00:13:07.43 these verses, first of all Daniel seeks an answer in his 00:13:07.46\00:13:10.60 prayer meeting and they all pray and it is revealed 00:13:10.64\00:13:12.92 to Daniel, verse 19, and then what does Daniel do? 00:13:12.95\00:13:15.16 Verse 20, 21, 22, 23, all of these verses are directing us 00:13:15.19\00:13:21.45 to what Daniel does in response of this, 00:13:21.49\00:13:23.65 and what does he do? 00:13:23.68\00:13:24.65 He prays, praises God, he blesses God, he sings God's 00:13:24.66\00:13:28.39 praises, it is not an issue even to himself anymore. 00:13:28.43\00:13:32.41 He's lost in this atmosphere of praise and worship to God. 00:13:32.44\00:13:37.65 It's just amazing that as the story unfolds, that as Daniel 00:13:37.68\00:13:42.86 comes before the king, 00:13:42.89\00:13:44.29 you would think with his life 00:13:44.32\00:13:46.61 threatened that he is number one 00:13:46.65\00:13:49.29 objective would be to just come 00:13:49.33\00:13:51.91 straight into the king's presence and immediately give 00:13:51.94\00:13:54.72 the dream and interpretation and it almost looks like he's on 00:13:54.75\00:13:57.70 shaky ground here because the first thing that he says, 00:13:57.73\00:14:00.66 he comes before the king and the King says, are you the one? 00:14:00.69\00:14:05.37 Are you one of these individuals that can reveal the secret of 00:14:05.41\00:14:09.62 Kings dream and Daniel doesn't immediately tell the dream and 00:14:09.66\00:14:13.84 interpretation, he immediately directs the 00:14:13.87\00:14:15.80 attention to the Lord. 00:14:15.84\00:14:17.03 What he does, what he does, hold that thought right there 00:14:17.06\00:14:20.26 what he does is an incredible revelation of a human being 00:14:20.30\00:14:23.46 who is infected, saturated with the grace of God. 00:14:23.50\00:14:28.19 Don't go away we will be right back to talk about this. 00:14:28.22\00:14:30.50
