Hello, friends and
welcome to Books of the Book.
00:00:21.57\00:00:24.64
We're studying
the book of Daniel,
00:00:24.65\00:00:26.18
my name is James Rafferty.
00:00:26.19\00:00:28.18
And I'm Ty Gibson,
this is going to be
00:00:28.19\00:00:29.95
our first study in the book
of Daniel in a series of 13.
00:00:29.96\00:00:34.02
And James what we decided
to do in this first program,
00:00:34.03\00:00:37.69
is to do an overview of
the entire book of Daniel.
00:00:37.70\00:00:40.94
We won't give any details,
00:00:40.95\00:00:42.81
but we're going
to do an aerial view.
00:00:42.82\00:00:44.96
We're gonna fly over the
terrain of the book of Daniel,
00:00:44.97\00:00:48.49
but we're not going to
00:00:48.50\00:00:49.47
specifically land
and give the details.
00:00:49.48\00:00:52.36
We're going to look
at Daniel from the air,
00:00:52.37\00:00:55.36
what do we have here
in Daniel's 12 Chapters
00:00:55.37\00:00:58.68
and then in the future
programs we're going to backup
00:00:58.69\00:01:01.69
and we're going to look in
00:01:01.70\00:01:02.67
greater detail at each Chapter.
00:01:02.68\00:01:04.87
You know, this is a
significant thing to do,
00:01:04.88\00:01:07.60
is to look at the aerial view,
00:01:07.61\00:01:08.94
because Daniel
is a powerful book
00:01:08.95\00:01:11.63
of prophecy and relationship.
00:01:11.64\00:01:14.35
And we're going to
see those two aspects
00:01:14.36\00:01:16.27
of the book of Daniel
come together and direct us
00:01:16.28\00:01:19.14
to what we understand
to be the New Covenant
00:01:19.15\00:01:21.83
or a New Covenant experience.
00:01:21.84\00:01:24.01
Daniel Chapter 1 through 6
00:01:24.02\00:01:26.58
is primarily
dealing with relationship,
00:01:26.59\00:01:29.89
Christian experience,
the walk of a believer,
00:01:29.90\00:01:33.14
a follower of God.
00:01:33.15\00:01:34.86
Daniel Chapter 7 through 12
00:01:34.87\00:01:37.05
is primarily dealing
with prophecy, visions,
00:01:37.06\00:01:41.03
predictions of the
future, history of the world,
00:01:41.04\00:01:43.84
past, present, and future.
00:01:43.85\00:01:45.43
And these two come
together and bring to us
00:01:45.44\00:01:47.85
a powerful picture of
the Christian experience,
00:01:47.86\00:01:50.67
the Christian walk and
how we can have faith in God.
00:01:50.68\00:01:53.58
I appreciate the fact,
James, that you've pointed out
00:01:53.59\00:01:56.25
that Chapters 1
through 6 of Daniel
00:01:56.26\00:01:58.88
primarily deal
with our relationship
00:01:58.89\00:02:00.92
with God emphasis on primarily,
00:02:00.93\00:02:02.69
because in fact there are some
prophecies that unfold there.
00:02:02.70\00:02:05.95
And then when we come
00:02:05.96\00:02:06.97
to the second half
of the book of Daniel,
00:02:06.98\00:02:09.37
you've pointed out that,
00:02:09.38\00:02:10.49
it primarily
deals with prophecies.
00:02:10.50\00:02:12.98
But it's also a
very, very beautiful thing
00:02:12.99\00:02:16.65
that Daniel's experience
with God continues to deepen,
00:02:16.66\00:02:19.96
to unfold into enlarge
00:02:19.97\00:02:21.91
in the second half
of the book as well.
00:02:21.92\00:02:23.97
Absolutely, so
you've got a primary aspect
00:02:23.98\00:02:26.20
or focus on
relationship in 1 through 6
00:02:26.21\00:02:29.27
but there is prophecy.
00:02:29.28\00:02:30.26
And then you got a
primary application
00:02:30.27\00:02:32.07
or unfolding a
prophecy in 7 through 12
00:02:32.08\00:02:35.27
but there is still relationship.
00:02:35.28\00:02:36.85
And each one of
those comes together
00:02:36.86\00:02:38.70
and forms a beautiful picture,
00:02:38.71\00:02:40.42
a beautiful
prophetic picture of who God is
00:02:40.43\00:02:43.72
and what He is
calling us to as believers
00:02:43.73\00:02:45.58
Okay, James, let's
take the journey then.
00:02:45.59\00:02:47.27
Let's begin
with Daniel Chapter 1
00:02:47.28\00:02:49.28
reminding those who
are studying with us
00:02:49.29\00:02:51.82
that we're not
going to get into details,
00:02:51.83\00:02:53.51
we're just gonna move
through the entire book.
00:02:53.52\00:02:55.17
In the first
segment of our program,
00:02:55.18\00:02:56.92
we'll try to get
through Chapters 1 through 6.
00:02:56.93\00:02:59.75
In Daniel Chapter 1 the
book opens by showing us
00:02:59.76\00:03:05.11
that Daniel and his
people have been taken captive
00:03:05.12\00:03:08.32
to a foreign country,
that country is Babylon.
00:03:08.33\00:03:11.20
Yes, here is a man,
has been devastated,
00:03:11.21\00:03:12.92
he's lost his family,
he's lost his sovereignty,
00:03:12.93\00:03:16.54
he has been separated from
his country, from his kinsmen.
00:03:16.55\00:03:19.20
This Chapter tells us that we
can survive the worst calamity
00:03:19.21\00:03:24.82
that can come to us
if we have faith in God.
00:03:24.83\00:03:27.60
Daniel Chapter 1 is directing us
00:03:27.61\00:03:30.31
as we look at Daniel
00:03:30.32\00:03:31.88
to a young man
actually a teenager,
00:03:31.89\00:03:33.83
he was probably 15 or 16
years of age to a teenager
00:03:33.84\00:03:37.15
who though his
life seems devastated,
00:03:37.16\00:03:39.19
he has made a unique in
this court of this heathen king.
00:03:39.20\00:03:42.98
He has this trust in God,
his purpose is to follow God
00:03:42.99\00:03:45.85
no matter what and through
that he is able to deal with
00:03:45.86\00:03:50.25
this terrible trail and calamity
00:03:50.26\00:03:51.70
that comes into his life.
00:03:51.71\00:03:52.83
You notice in
Chapter 1 that there are
00:03:52.84\00:03:54.96
two primary characters
in the onset of the story
00:03:54.97\00:03:59.03
and they are,
King Nebuchadnezzar,
00:03:59.04\00:04:00.83
the king of Babylon and Daniel,
00:04:00.84\00:04:03.02
this captive lad
in a foreign land.
00:04:03.03\00:04:06.05
You would think that
King Nebuchadnezzar would
00:04:06.06\00:04:07.80
just be peripheral to the story
00:04:07.81\00:04:09.56
and that there wouldn't be
00:04:09.57\00:04:10.86
specific attention given to him,
00:04:10.87\00:04:13.36
but it's incredible
as the story unfolds
00:04:13.37\00:04:16.12
that you begin to
realize as you read Daniel,
00:04:16.13\00:04:18.53
that wait a minute,
not only as God concerned
00:04:18.54\00:04:21.72
with His captive
people in Daniel as this,
00:04:21.73\00:04:24.61
this young man that he
is going to work medially
00:04:24.62\00:04:27.34
through to
unfold this prophecies.
00:04:27.35\00:04:29.62
But you begin to get
the sense in this prophecy
00:04:29.63\00:04:33.05
that God is very interested
in Nebuchadnezzar himself.
00:04:33.06\00:04:37.46
And so Chapter 1 as
it begins to unfold,
00:04:37.47\00:04:40.91
we realize that God is laboring
00:04:40.92\00:04:43.68
for the conversion
of King Nebuchadnezzar,
00:04:43.69\00:04:46.32
this despotic ruler that is,
00:04:46.33\00:04:49.71
not in a positively light at all
00:04:49.72\00:04:52.25
for most of the book of Daniel,
00:04:52.26\00:04:54.12
but eventually we
see that he is brought
00:04:54.13\00:04:55.96
to the worship of the true God.
00:04:55.97\00:04:57.25
And that must be what God
impresses Daniel to understand.
00:04:57.26\00:05:01.24
One of the ways that
we can make it through
00:05:01.25\00:05:02.76
trails friends in this life,
00:05:02.77\00:05:04.43
is to get our
focus off ourselves
00:05:04.44\00:05:06.83
and to get our focus
not attention on ministry
00:05:06.84\00:05:09.29
and reaching out
to somebody else.
00:05:09.30\00:05:11.02
And this is a principle
we find in Daniel Chapter 1.
00:05:11.03\00:05:14.39
Well, Daniel, can be overwhelmed
00:05:14.40\00:05:15.95
and maybe even just want
to forget the rest of his life
00:05:15.96\00:05:18.82
at this point
in this experience.
00:05:18.83\00:05:21.08
He allows God to, to
imbue him with His spirit,
00:05:21.09\00:05:24.78
with the spirit of
God, the spirit of Christ.
00:05:24.79\00:05:26.75
He allows God's will
to be done in his life
00:05:26.76\00:05:29.09
and he becomes a
vessel, a channel through which
00:05:29.10\00:05:31.94
God's love can be communicated
to this heathen king.
00:05:31.95\00:05:34.46
So, so as Daniel continues
his experience in Chapter 1.
00:05:34.47\00:05:39.55
He emerges as this young
man who purpose is in his heart,
00:05:39.56\00:05:44.00
he is determined to
maintain faithfulness to his God
00:05:44.01\00:05:48.36
in this captivity situation
00:05:48.37\00:05:50.82
and then Chapter
2 opens up, James.
00:05:50.83\00:05:53.60
In Chapter 2, we
find Nebuchadnezzar man
00:05:53.61\00:05:56.01
who is all
powerful, a man who is,
00:05:56.02\00:05:57.99
is the
wealthiest man in the world
00:05:58.00\00:05:59.74
having a dream that troubles him
00:05:59.75\00:06:01.53
and basically this dream
troubles him so much and that,
00:06:01.54\00:06:04.73
and no one can help
him understand this dream
00:06:04.74\00:06:07.14
that he is fraught with anger.
00:06:07.15\00:06:10.43
He wants to annihilate all
the wise men of his Kingdom
00:06:10.44\00:06:12.85
including Daniel at this
point because he is recognizing
00:06:12.86\00:06:16.40
or realizing that no
matter how powerful you are.
00:06:16.41\00:06:19.18
And no matter how much
you have of this world's good.
00:06:19.19\00:06:22.16
That no matter
how many counselors
00:06:22.17\00:06:24.44
and wise men you have around you
00:06:24.45\00:06:26.13
that nothing of this earth
can satisfy your deepest needs.
00:06:26.14\00:06:29.27
James, in Chapter 2 of Daniel,
00:06:29.28\00:06:32.18
it's evident that God
is achieving two goals.
00:06:32.19\00:06:35.01
On the one hand
he wants to reveal
00:06:35.02\00:06:37.61
world history in advance.
00:06:37.62\00:06:39.40
He wants to give a
prophecy that can be studied
00:06:39.41\00:06:43.07
down through the
ages and especially
00:06:43.08\00:06:45.11
at the end time
of human history.
00:06:45.12\00:06:47.50
But at the same time God is
achieving the goal of reaching
00:06:47.51\00:06:51.20
into Nebuchadnezzar's heart
in laboring for his conversion.
00:06:51.21\00:06:55.80
Nebuchadnezzar
is a heathen King.
00:06:55.81\00:06:58.35
Why doesn't God just
give the prophecy to Daniel,
00:06:58.36\00:07:01.68
Daniel is a prophet after all.
00:07:01.69\00:07:03.09
Daniel is faithful to
God, but God gives a vision,
00:07:03.10\00:07:07.45
a prophecy to someone
who isn't even a believer.
00:07:07.46\00:07:11.43
Nebuchadnezzar at this point
00:07:11.44\00:07:12.81
needs to feel his
need and he doesn't.
00:07:12.82\00:07:14.61
He just conquered all the world,
00:07:14.62\00:07:16.17
he has taken
Daniel's God into captivity
00:07:16.18\00:07:19.02
basically the
vessels of his sanctuary,
00:07:19.03\00:07:20.98
so he doesn't
feel his need at all
00:07:20.99\00:07:22.36
and so this is the way
that God helps Nebuchadnezzar
00:07:22.37\00:07:25.14
to feel his need
through this dream
00:07:25.15\00:07:26.66
that cannot be understood
00:07:26.67\00:07:27.76
or interpreted by
any of his wise men.
00:07:27.77\00:07:29.98
Nebuchadnezzar
comes to the place
00:07:29.99\00:07:31.38
where he is so
frustrated that he gives up
00:07:31.39\00:07:33.43
all hope at anything that
is of earthly wisdom around him
00:07:33.44\00:07:37.37
and in that point God
steps into the picture
00:07:37.38\00:07:40.36
and Nebuchadnezzar
realizes at least intellectually
00:07:40.37\00:07:43.42
that there is something
bigger, something better,
00:07:43.43\00:07:45.81
something more than
anything that he is accustom to,
00:07:45.82\00:07:48.48
anything that is
known to him. Yes.
00:07:48.49\00:07:50.38
In the realm and the
world that he has been living
00:07:50.39\00:07:52.11
and that's exactly what
God wants to be for us friends.
00:07:52.12\00:07:54.86
He wants to at times
breakup our ease or prosperity
00:07:54.87\00:08:01.75
or satisfaction with
the things of this world.
00:08:01.76\00:08:04.37
He allows us to
experience trouble
00:08:04.38\00:08:06.65
as Nebuchadnezzar
did with his dream,
00:08:06.66\00:08:08.36
so that he can awaken in us
00:08:08.37\00:08:10.51
the real need
that we have for him.
00:08:10.52\00:08:12.45
So relationship
begins in Chapter 2
00:08:12.46\00:08:15.14
between
Nebuchadnezzar and Daniel,
00:08:15.15\00:08:16.88
because Daniel is
the one who is called in
00:08:16.89\00:08:20.22
to interpret King
Nebuchadnezzar's dream.
00:08:20.23\00:08:23.33
We're gonna look at the
dream specifically and breakdown
00:08:23.34\00:08:26.88
what it reveals of
world history in advance
00:08:26.89\00:08:29.70
as we deal with the prophecy
00:08:29.71\00:08:31.32
specifically in
a future program,
00:08:31.33\00:08:33.06
but then we come
to Daniel Chapter 3.
00:08:33.07\00:08:35.38
This Daniel
Chapter 3 is incredible,
00:08:35.39\00:08:37.07
because here is the
king who has intellectually
00:08:37.08\00:08:40.44
acknowledged the interpretation
00:08:40.45\00:08:42.61
of the dream of an
image of three different,
00:08:42.62\00:08:45.27
four different types
of metals and then he goes
00:08:45.28\00:08:48.03
in Chapter 3 he
goes on to in a sense
00:08:48.04\00:08:51.60
turn away from the light
00:08:51.61\00:08:53.40
that has been given
to him from God. Yes.
00:08:53.41\00:08:55.16
And created image
that is all of gold.
00:08:55.17\00:08:57.27
Now, what this does really is
00:08:57.28\00:08:59.45
it reveals to us our
deepest need and fear.
00:08:59.46\00:09:02.41
Nebuchadnezzar recognized
in the first dream himself,
00:09:02.42\00:09:05.51
his kingdom, it was
the kingdom of gold,
00:09:05.52\00:09:08.52
symbolized by the head of gold,
00:09:08.53\00:09:10.12
but in Chapter
3 he is in denial,
00:09:10.13\00:09:12.75
because he wants his
kingdom to continue on forever.
00:09:12.76\00:09:16.61
Now the danger in
these friends is that
00:09:16.62\00:09:18.52
we need to recognize
and God wants to show us,
00:09:18.53\00:09:20.86
that there is no
forever without God.
00:09:20.87\00:09:22.63
God is the only one
that has eternal life, yes,
00:09:22.64\00:09:24.46
and God wants you and I
to have that eternal life.
00:09:24.47\00:09:27.16
He doesn't want us to be
without that eternal life,
00:09:27.17\00:09:29.63
but in order to have it
we need to recognize him
00:09:29.64\00:09:32.10
as the creator and the redeemer.
00:09:32.11\00:09:33.82
So
Nebuchadnezzar is moving through
00:09:33.83\00:09:36.34
a progressively
deepening experience with God.
00:09:36.35\00:09:40.01
Nebuchadnezzar doesn't even know
00:09:40.02\00:09:41.71
that God is
pursuing him at this point.
00:09:41.72\00:09:43.59
He doesn't even
know that he is entering
00:09:43.60\00:09:46.19
into a relationship with
the Most High God of heaven.
00:09:46.20\00:09:49.71
All he knows is that he has
received this troubling dream
00:09:49.72\00:09:53.32
and he wants to
know what it means.
00:09:53.33\00:09:55.08
Daniel tells him the
dream, interprets the dream
00:09:55.09\00:09:58.20
and at the end of Chapter 2
00:09:58.21\00:10:00.78
Nebuchadnezzar has
acknowledged Daniel's God.
00:10:00.79\00:10:03.47
He is actually voiced
praise and thanks to this God
00:10:03.48\00:10:07.97
and then he
proceeds in Chapter 3
00:10:07.98\00:10:09.66
with this intellectual knowledge
00:10:09.67\00:10:11.49
that God has given him
to defy that knowledge,
00:10:11.50\00:10:14.67
to create an
image that goes contrary
00:10:14.68\00:10:17.38
to what God actually revealed
to him through his dream
00:10:17.39\00:10:20.80
and Daniel's interpretation.
00:10:20.81\00:10:22.76
But God's not done
with Nebuchadnezzar yet,
00:10:22.77\00:10:25.48
He is not giving up on this guy,
00:10:25.49\00:10:27.51
He sets up this image of
gold and he exercises force
00:10:27.52\00:10:32.14
in his kingdom to
demand, to command that
00:10:32.15\00:10:36.08
everyone worship the
image of gold that represents
00:10:36.09\00:10:38.91
the perpetuation of
the Kingdom of Babylon
00:10:38.92\00:10:42.14
for all time in eternity,
00:10:42.15\00:10:43.97
no doubt in
Nebuchadnezzar's mind,
00:10:43.98\00:10:45.59
he just wants Babylon
to go on and on and on
00:10:45.60\00:10:48.40
and even though
he's defying the vision,
00:10:48.41\00:10:52.17
God doesn't abandon him.
00:10:52.18\00:10:54.01
God continues to draw
close to Nebuchadnezzar
00:10:54.02\00:10:57.69
and gives him a second dream.
00:10:57.70\00:10:59.93
Daniel Chapter 4
reveals the second dream
00:10:59.94\00:11:02.08
and it's really
interesting here when you study
00:11:02.09\00:11:04.07
or understand human nature,
00:11:04.08\00:11:06.10
lots of us want
to have religion,
00:11:06.11\00:11:08.17
we want to
intellectually acknowledge God,
00:11:08.18\00:11:10.66
we move past maybe the
stage of atheism or unbeliever,
00:11:10.67\00:11:14.66
but we want God on our
terms, not on Gods terms.
00:11:14.67\00:11:17.99
Nebuchadnezzar
wants God on his terms.
00:11:18.00\00:11:20.03
Okay, I believe your
God is the God of God's,
00:11:20.04\00:11:22.77
but this is the way
I'm gonna worship God.
00:11:22.78\00:11:24.96
This is the way God can be
part of my life and God says,
00:11:24.97\00:11:27.35
no, it can't be that way.
00:11:27.36\00:11:28.67
Daniel Chapter 4 is a revelation
00:11:28.68\00:11:32.01
of the truth of
the matter and that is,
00:11:32.02\00:11:34.64
that nothing in this world
is more important than God.
00:11:34.65\00:11:38.97
Nebuchadnezzar is still
putting things ahead of God,
00:11:38.98\00:11:40.79
he's still, he's
still placing worldly things
00:11:40.80\00:11:44.73
as more important than God.
00:11:44.74\00:11:46.81
By the time this vision is
finished and by the time this,
00:11:46.82\00:11:50.94
we'll talk about it more,
00:11:50.95\00:11:52.32
the seven years
passes over Nebuchadnezzar,
00:11:52.33\00:11:55.01
God is first and
foremost and everything else
00:11:55.02\00:11:58.40
is secondary and that is
00:11:58.41\00:11:59.71
when Nebuchadnezzar's heart
is filled with joy and peace.
00:11:59.72\00:12:02.59
So Chapter 4 of
Daniel is a testimony
00:12:02.60\00:12:05.83
from Nebuchadnezzar
that indicates his
00:12:05.84\00:12:08.44
for incomplete
conversion to the Lord,
00:12:08.45\00:12:12.14
but then Chapter 5
unfolds and we see a contrast.
00:12:12.15\00:12:15.28
Yes, in Chapter 5,
Ty, we have Belshazzar,
00:12:15.29\00:12:18.33
Nebuchadnezzar's
grandson and he is exactly
00:12:18.34\00:12:21.28
the opposite in response to
God that Nebuchadnezzar was.
00:12:21.29\00:12:25.24
Belshazzar is overwhelmed
with the things of this earth,
00:12:25.25\00:12:28.62
the gods of silver, and
stone, and wood, and iron,
00:12:28.63\00:12:31.78
and he does not acknowledge God,
00:12:31.79\00:12:33.76
he does not
acknowledge that in Him,
00:12:33.77\00:12:35.68
we live, and move,
and have our being.
00:12:35.69\00:12:37.05
He does not
respond to the gospel,
00:12:37.06\00:12:38.63
the good news,
and the love of God
00:12:38.64\00:12:40.58
and finally comes to the place
00:12:40.59\00:12:41.97
where he receives
the judgment of God.
00:12:41.98\00:12:43.98
Chapter 5 of Daniel is
a- the story of Belshazzar's
00:12:43.99\00:12:49.47
drunken feast and it is in
Chapter 5 that we have the,
00:12:49.48\00:12:55.79
the body less hand that
writes the words on the wall
00:12:55.80\00:12:59.44
at Belshazzar's feast
"Mene Mene Tekel Upharsin"
00:12:59.45\00:13:04.13
you are weighed in the
balances and found wanting.
00:13:04.14\00:13:07.53
And Chapter 5
brings us to the conclusion
00:13:07.54\00:13:09.84
of the Babylonian empire
00:13:09.85\00:13:11.78
and the Medes and Persians
take over at that point.
00:13:11.79\00:13:14.37
Yeah, then we get into
Chapter 6 the final Chapter
00:13:14.38\00:13:16.79
in this first half
focusing again on relationship.
00:13:16.80\00:13:19.92
This one is an astounding
00:13:19.93\00:13:23.13
summary of
Daniel's faith in God.
00:13:23.14\00:13:27.29
Here's the man
who praise morning,
00:13:27.30\00:13:30.28
evening and at noon and prayer
and communicating with God
00:13:30.29\00:13:32.76
is the most
important thing friends.
00:13:32.77\00:13:34.59
Daniels testifies
of that truth and even
00:13:34.60\00:13:37.28
when laws are passed
that forbid him to pray,
00:13:37.29\00:13:39.96
he continues to
pray and of course
00:13:39.97\00:13:41.70
we know the story so well,
he ends up in the lions den
00:13:41.71\00:13:44.40
and there God delivers him
from the mouth of the lions.
00:13:44.41\00:13:47.84
Daniel Chapter 6 is
a powerful testimony
00:13:47.85\00:13:51.39
of how we can have faith in
God in the toughest of times
00:13:51.40\00:13:54.41
and through the
greatest of trials.
00:13:54.42\00:13:56.02
Don't go away,
we'll be right back
00:13:56.03\00:13:57.78
to cover the second
half of the book of Daniel.
00:13:57.79\00:13:59.97
