Hello friends welcome to Books 00:00:21.25\00:00:23.49 of the Book! 00:00:23.52\00:00:24.85 We are continuing our study 00:00:24.89\00:00:26.25 and we are in Daniel Chapter 11 00:00:26.29\00:00:28.02 and my name is James Rafferty. 00:00:28.09\00:00:29.52 And I am Ty Gibson and thank 00:00:29.56\00:00:30.89 you for joining us for this 00:00:30.93\00:00:32.26 Bible study in the book 00:00:32.29\00:00:33.63 of Daniel. 00:00:33.66\00:00:34.96 We want to invite you to get 00:00:35.00\00:00:36.33 your Bible and open up to Daniel 00:00:36.36\00:00:37.70 Chapter 11. 00:00:37.73\00:00:39.07 James this is a challenging chapter. 00:00:39.10\00:00:42.10 It has a lot of details that covers a lot of history. 00:00:42.14\00:00:45.97 When we look at Daniel Chapter 11, we need to be mindful 00:00:46.01\00:00:49.84 the fact that there are a lot of details. 00:00:49.88\00:00:52.48 It is rather cumbersome to get through but the rewards 00:00:52.51\00:00:55.85 are great as we move through the preliminary history and 00:00:55.88\00:00:59.19 come to the central issue of Daniel Chapter 11. 00:00:59.22\00:01:03.49 That is the Prince of the covenant and the attack that is 00:01:03.53\00:01:07.56 being made on the new covenant that Jesus has 00:01:07.60\00:01:10.57 confirmed and ratified. 00:01:10.60\00:01:11.93 One of the easiest ways, I think, to understand Daniel 00:01:11.97\00:01:15.37 11, is to break it down into parts. 00:01:15.40\00:01:17.41 Basically Daniel Chapter 11 is a continuation of 00:01:17.44\00:01:21.11 Daniel 2, 7, and 8. 00:01:21.14\00:01:24.28 These are parallel prophecies at each one of them is 00:01:24.31\00:01:26.78 based on the principle of repeat and enlarge. 00:01:26.85\00:01:29.28 Once you understand and see that big framework, 00:01:29.32\00:01:31.72 and you understand the principle of repeat and enlarge 00:01:31.75\00:01:34.22 it's easy to pick up Daniel 11 and dissected it, 00:01:34.26\00:01:37.63 break it into parts. 00:01:37.66\00:01:39.03 For us, I think, focus on the most important parts. 00:01:39.06\00:01:42.66 So Daniel 11 begins in verse 1 with the Medo Persian 00:01:42.70\00:01:46.84 kingdom and now we know in Daniel 2 and 7 that Babylon 00:01:46.87\00:01:50.97 is where we begin with, the power we begin with. 00:01:51.01\00:01:53.91 But Daniel 8 and Daniel 11, Babylon has passed from the 00:01:53.94\00:01:56.95 scene, so we picked up here with Medo Persia and move 00:01:56.98\00:02:00.18 quickly from Medo Persia right into Greece in verse 3. 00:02:00.22\00:02:03.79 Verses 3 all the way down to verse 13 are dealing with 00:02:03.82\00:02:07.36 the nitty-gritty details of this power Greece. 00:02:07.39\00:02:10.49 We continue to do that all the way through this prophecy. 00:02:10.53\00:02:12.86 Daniel in Chapter 11 is basically expounding and 00:02:12.89\00:02:17.70 expanding, and enlarging upon the previous prophecies 00:02:17.73\00:02:21.77 in 2, 7 and 8. 00:02:21.80\00:02:24.14 Once we move through the brief mention of the Media 00:02:24.17\00:02:27.81 Persia empire, in verses 1 and 2, and then a rather 00:02:27.84\00:02:31.95 detail explanation of successive kings and power 00:02:31.98\00:02:36.15 struggles in the Grecian kingdom from Chapter 11, 00:02:36.18\00:02:40.29 verses 3 through 13. 00:02:40.32\00:02:43.32 Then in verse 14 it introduces the pagan Roman empire. 00:02:43.36\00:02:48.40 From verse 14 onward, there is a developmental process 00:02:48.43\00:02:52.37 that brings us to Daniel's real point, and that is 00:02:52.43\00:02:56.64 drawing on us into the Messiah who is the Prince of 00:02:56.67\00:03:00.91 the covenant in verse 22. 00:03:00.94\00:03:03.91 Absolutely, in fact you can see right here in verses 20 00:03:03.95\00:03:09.25 and 21 a clear connection between the rulers in pagan 00:03:09.28\00:03:14.52 Rome at Christ's time, and the birth of Christ. 00:03:14.56\00:03:17.73 For example in verse 20 it says, "then shall stand up" 00:03:17.76\00:03:20.90 "in his estate," that means the place of these Roman 00:03:20.93\00:03:23.97 empires, "a raiser of taxes in the glory of the kingdom. " 00:03:24.00\00:03:27.67 Now if you compare that with Luke Chapter 2 and verse 1 00:03:27.74\00:03:32.14 and again Luke was a historian, so Luke records this from 00:03:32.21\00:03:35.71 that angle which is helpful for us when we are looking 00:03:35.74\00:03:39.21 at prophecy and history. 00:03:39.25\00:03:41.25 In Luke Chapter 2 and verse 1, it says, "and it came" 00:03:41.28\00:03:45.12 "to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from" 00:03:45.15\00:03:48.52 "Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. " 00:03:48.56\00:03:52.29 So Joseph is traveling with Mary, his espoused wife, 00:03:52.33\00:03:56.00 in verse 5 of Luke Chapter 2. 00:03:56.03\00:03:58.37 They are going to Bethlehem for the census and this taxing. 00:03:58.40\00:04:02.34 That correlates, or parallels perfectly with the prophecy 00:04:02.37\00:04:06.21 we have here in verse 20 of Daniel Chapter 11. 00:04:06.24\00:04:09.44 This gives us a time frame, this is the pagan Roman 00:04:09.48\00:04:12.68 empire and the time that Jesus Christ is born. 00:04:12.71\00:04:15.88 Yes and in verse 20 of Chapter 11 of Daniel it speaks of 00:04:15.92\00:04:20.02 one who is an imposer of taxes, that is Caesar Augustus 00:04:20.06\00:04:24.09 at the time of the birth of Christ. 00:04:24.13\00:04:27.03 What about verse 21? 00:04:27.10\00:04:28.63 21 is speaking of the one who follows Caesar Augustus. 00:04:28.70\00:04:33.07 If you look here in, again in the book of Luke Chapter 3, 00:04:33.10\00:04:37.44 instead of Chapter 2. 00:04:37.47\00:04:39.51 You find Tiberius Caesar mentioned. 00:04:39.54\00:04:41.94 So in Luke Chapter 3 beginning with verse 1, "now in the" 00:04:42.01\00:04:45.45 "15th year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar," 00:04:45.48\00:04:48.88 "Pontius Pilate being governor. " 00:04:48.92\00:04:50.69 The 15th year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar is when 00:04:50.72\00:04:54.12 Jesus is 27 years old, or about 30 years of age when he 00:04:54.16\00:04:57.76 is baptized, and so Tiberius Caesar is also the one under 00:04:57.79\00:05:01.40 whose rule Pontius Pilate is reigning. 00:05:01.46\00:05:04.37 That brings us to the fulfillment of the next part of 00:05:04.40\00:05:07.67 this prophecy, verse 22. 00:05:07.70\00:05:09.50 "And with the arms of a flood shall they," and this is 00:05:09.54\00:05:12.57 speaking prophetically of God's people, "be overflown" 00:05:12.61\00:05:16.04 "before him, and shall be broken yea, also the Prince" 00:05:16.08\00:05:19.51 "of the covenant. " 00:05:19.55\00:05:20.88 Which is Jesus, so this is clearly indicating in 00:05:20.92\00:05:23.25 historic secession here that we will have the taxation 00:05:23.28\00:05:27.72 that occurs with Caesar Augustus, and the next one that 00:05:27.76\00:05:31.79 comes into place is Tiberius Caesar under whose rule 00:05:31.83\00:05:35.83 Jesus is crucified. 00:05:35.86\00:05:38.17 Yeah, so these verses are very clear and they give us 00:05:38.20\00:05:41.17 a central point from which to understand the previous 00:05:41.20\00:05:44.11 verses and the verses to follow. 00:05:44.14\00:05:45.91 They direct us to the birth and the cross, the sacrifice 00:05:45.94\00:05:49.58 death of Jesus Christ and the two Caesars that reigned, 00:05:49.61\00:05:52.85 Augustus Caesar and Tiberius Caesar during that time. 00:05:52.88\00:05:56.25 Now Jesus is referred to by many different terms and 00:05:56.28\00:05:59.62 symbols in Scripture. 00:05:59.65\00:06:01.06 Here is a term that is used is that he is the Prince of 00:06:01.09\00:06:04.26 covenant, as we pointed out previously James, all of the 00:06:04.33\00:06:07.50 book of Daniel is moving us deeper, deeper into an 00:06:07.50\00:06:11.40 understanding of the new covenant that Jesus Christ, 00:06:11.43\00:06:14.84 the Savior of the world, will confirm and establish by 00:06:14.87\00:06:18.24 His life and His death. 00:06:18.27\00:06:20.14 Now when we come to the Chapter 11 we have an 00:06:20.18\00:06:23.41 increased focus on Jesus as the Prince of the covenant and the 00:06:23.45\00:06:29.58 warfare that is taking place at the end time, 00:06:29.62\00:06:32.89 from the time of Jesus through to the end time 00:06:32.92\00:06:36.12 regarding the holy covenant. 00:06:36.16\00:06:38.36 Yes Ty, so we are looking at here in Daniel 11 is 00:06:38.39\00:06:41.93 basically a summation, a summation of Daniel 2, 7, 8. 00:06:41.96\00:06:45.47 What do we see in 2, 7, 8? 00:06:45.50\00:06:46.84 We have seen a development of the new covenant and 00:06:46.87\00:06:49.94 the attack that was made against it. 00:06:49.97\00:06:51.54 For example, Daniel 2, the rock that hits the image at 00:06:51.57\00:06:55.44 the feet, is a rock that is brought without hands. 00:06:55.48\00:06:58.88 It is no human power, it is God's power. 00:06:58.91\00:07:00.62 Daniel 7, he will think to change times and laws. 00:07:00.65\00:07:02.92 An attack against the law of God which is part 00:07:02.95\00:07:05.15 of the new covenant. 00:07:05.19\00:07:06.52 Daniel 8, he will seek to cast the truth to the ground, 00:07:06.55\00:07:09.56 and the sanctuary to the ground by attacking the 00:07:09.59\00:07:11.63 mediation or the forgiveness of sins, through Jesus 00:07:11.66\00:07:13.70 Christ in the heavenly sanctuary. 00:07:13.73\00:07:15.36 So all of these elements are developed through these 00:07:15.40\00:07:18.40 prophecies and come together and are summarized right 00:07:18.43\00:07:21.37 here in Daniel 11. 00:07:21.40\00:07:22.74 What is the point of all these different prophecies? 00:07:22.77\00:07:25.51 They are bringing us to understand the Prince of the new 00:07:25.54\00:07:27.84 covenant and the attack that is being made against 00:07:27.88\00:07:30.05 the new covenant. 00:07:30.08\00:07:31.41 Now we noted in a previous study James, that Jesus 00:07:31.45\00:07:35.38 is specifically identified in Chapter 9 and verse 26 00:07:35.42\00:07:40.12 as the Messiah, and then down in verse 27, He is the one 00:07:40.16\00:07:44.79 who confirms the covenant. 00:07:44.86\00:07:46.59 So the Messiah is the one who confirms the covenant. 00:07:46.63\00:07:49.46 We know this is speaking of the new covenant and not the 00:07:49.53\00:07:52.33 old covenant because it is in reference to the Messiah 00:07:52.37\00:07:55.14 when He comes to establish the new covenant. 00:07:55.17\00:07:57.47 And also because the whole book of Daniel is directing 00:07:57.51\00:07:59.87 us to the new covenant. 00:07:59.91\00:08:01.41 Exactly! Exactly, and now as we continue in Chapter 11, 00:08:01.44\00:08:04.55 we have made the transition from the Media Persian 00:08:04.58\00:08:07.72 kingdom to the Grecian kingdom and then into the pagan 00:08:07.78\00:08:10.89 Roman phase of the Roman empire. 00:08:10.92\00:08:13.62 Then when we come down to verses 28 and 29, we have a 00:08:13.69\00:08:18.59 transition beginning to occur here from the pagan Roman 00:08:18.63\00:08:23.50 phase to the papal Roman phase. 00:08:23.53\00:08:25.80 We want to just notice here, that in verse 28, 00:08:25.83\00:08:28.74 it says very clearly that he shall be moved against 00:08:28.77\00:08:32.14 the holy covenant, and that is the great controversy 00:08:32.17\00:08:35.51 aspect of the vision. 00:08:35.54\00:08:38.11 It says more here, Jesus is seeking to establish the new 00:08:38.15\00:08:41.85 covenant, the little horn power previously mentioned in 00:08:41.88\00:08:46.02 Chapter 7 and 8, and here in this prophecy the papal 00:08:46.05\00:08:50.13 Roman power is using its influence against the holy 00:08:50.16\00:08:53.96 covenant to subvert, to prevent the new covenant from 00:08:54.00\00:08:57.73 coming to completion and fruition. 00:08:57.77\00:09:00.20 In fact you find this repeated over and over again. 00:09:00.24\00:09:03.10 Verse 28, the holy covenant, then it says here in 00:09:03.14\00:09:05.94 verse 30, "for the ships of Chittim shall come against" 00:09:05.97\00:09:08.28 "him: and therefore he shall be grieved, and return and" 00:09:08.31\00:09:11.15 "have indignation against the holy covenant: so shall he" 00:09:11.18\00:09:14.35 "do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with" 00:09:14.38\00:09:17.49 "them that forsake the holy covenant. " 00:09:17.52\00:09:19.59 Then again you go down to" 00:09:19.62\00:09:21.39 verse 32, "and such as do" 00:09:21.42\00:09:22.96 "wickedly against the" 00:09:22.99\00:09:24.49 "covenant shall he corrupt by" 00:09:24.53\00:09:25.86 "flatteries: but the people" 00:09:25.89\00:09:27.50 "that do know their God shall" 00:09:27.56\00:09:28.96 "be strong, and do exploits. " 00:09:29.00\00:09:30.40 So you have the covenant, the holy covenant, the 00:09:30.43\00:09:32.53 covenant, the covenant, you had mentioned here 00:09:32.60\00:09:34.50 4 or 5 times in the context of Daniel 11. 00:09:34.54\00:09:37.11 Then you have a summation of the people who know their 00:09:37.14\00:09:39.87 God, well here is the purpose, here is the underlying 00:09:39.91\00:09:42.61 goal of the new covenant. 00:09:42.64\00:09:44.41 That is a relationship with God. 00:09:44.45\00:09:46.35 The new covenant is all about bringing us into this 00:09:46.38\00:09:49.35 relationship with God, so we are connecting with Him. 00:09:49.38\00:09:52.32 That is what the book of Daniel is all about. 00:09:52.35\00:09:53.96 You see Daniel 1 through 6 expounding upon the life of 00:09:53.99\00:09:58.29 Daniel and the life of his friends, even through 00:09:58.33\00:10:01.00 Nebuchadnezzar expounding upon this development of 00:10:01.03\00:10:03.80 relationship, this trust relationship with God. 00:10:03.83\00:10:06.50 You see here in Daniel 11 when a summation of the whole 00:10:06.53\00:10:10.04 picture, a prophetic picture is given you see two powers. 00:10:10.07\00:10:13.54 One power is working against the covenant. 00:10:13.58\00:10:15.81 The other power is working to establish the 00:10:15.84\00:10:18.01 holy covenant and the conclusion of this 00:10:18.05\00:10:20.18 is a people who know their God. 00:10:20.22\00:10:22.55 What does it mean that they know their God? 00:10:22.58\00:10:25.55 This is a very significant terminology in Scripture, 00:10:25.62\00:10:28.66 James, because it is not referring to mere intellectual 00:10:28.69\00:10:31.66 knowledge, it is not referring to the idea they have a creed 00:10:31.69\00:10:36.60 memorized, it is not referring to any knowledge that is 00:10:36.63\00:10:40.57 external, or that is formal. 00:10:40.60\00:10:43.67 It's referring to a relationship with God that is very 00:10:43.74\00:10:47.58 intimate, very close and these people that are described 00:10:47.61\00:10:51.45 here are doing great exploits at the end of time. 00:10:51.48\00:10:54.35 These individuals know God in a very personal, 00:10:54.38\00:10:57.25 intimate sense. 00:10:57.29\00:10:58.69 There are few scriptures that come to mind 00:10:58.72\00:11:00.36 that uses this terminology. 00:11:00.39\00:11:01.92 One is where the new covenant is described in 00:11:01.96\00:11:04.79 Chapter 8 of the book of Hebrews 00:11:04.86\00:11:06.96 Where the new covenant involves this promise, 00:11:07.00\00:11:09.80 they shall not teach every man his neighbor's saying 00:11:09.83\00:11:13.84 know the Lord, for all shall know Me from the least 00:11:13.87\00:11:17.84 to the greatest. 00:11:17.91\00:11:19.24 In other words there is not going to be a necessity, 00:11:19.27\00:11:22.44 among these people of evangelizing one another in 00:11:22.48\00:11:26.05 the sense of leading them to know God, because in fact 00:11:26.08\00:11:29.02 they will know God on a personal level 00:11:29.05\00:11:30.42 through the new covenant. 00:11:30.45\00:11:31.79 Also I think of the usage of the word by Jesus in John 00:11:31.82\00:11:35.49 Chapter 17 and verse 3, were Jesus said this is life 00:11:35.52\00:11:39.36 eternal that they might know You the only true God, 00:11:39.43\00:11:43.20 and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. 00:11:43.23\00:11:45.80 Jesus later on in John 17 defines what He means when 00:11:45.83\00:11:50.34 He says, eternal life is to know Him. 00:11:50.37\00:11:52.51 He says in verses 25 and 26 that those who know Him 00:11:52.54\00:11:56.71 are those who partake of the love of the Father and 00:11:56.75\00:12:00.98 the Son in personal relationship. 00:12:01.02\00:12:03.32 So this is an identification of the people of God at 00:12:03.39\00:12:07.86 the end of time doing great exploits as partakers of the 00:12:07.89\00:12:12.29 new covenant and its intimate relationship with God. 00:12:12.33\00:12:15.66 It also seems to be indicate here Ty, there is some 00:12:15.70\00:12:18.83 deception, some flattery, there is a conflict going on 00:12:18.87\00:12:22.17 between these people who know their God and another power 00:12:22.20\00:12:25.47 that claims, professes to be of God. 00:12:25.51\00:12:29.88 Infect Jesus talks about this again in Matthew Chapter 7, 00:12:29.91\00:12:33.48 I think another indication in this prophecy is fulfilled 00:12:33.55\00:12:37.09 here, he says, concerning the end of time Matthew, 00:12:37.12\00:12:40.69 Chapter 7 verse 21, "not every one that saith unto me," 00:12:40.72\00:12:43.83 "Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven;" 00:12:43.89\00:12:46.96 "but he that do with the will of my Father" 00:12:47.00\00:12:49.53 "which is in heaven. " 00:12:49.56\00:12:50.90 Verse 22, "many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord," 00:12:50.93\00:12:54.44 "have we not prophesied in thy name? And in thy name" 00:12:54.50\00:12:58.01 "have cast out devils? And in thy name have done many" 00:12:58.04\00:13:01.34 "wonderful works?" Verse 23, "and then will I profess" 00:13:01.38\00:13:04.58 "unto them, I never knew you; depart from me," 00:13:04.61\00:13:08.62 "ye that work iniquity. " 00:13:08.68\00:13:10.02 This is a sad commentary on people who profess the name 00:13:10.05\00:13:12.85 of Christ, they profess to be Christians, they profess 00:13:12.92\00:13:16.46 to know God, they do many wonderful works in His name, 00:13:16.49\00:13:20.00 but Jesus says they don't know Me. 00:13:20.03\00:13:21.73 Because what? They are workers of iniquity and this is 00:13:21.76\00:13:24.90 why is so vital for us to recognize, and our audience to 00:13:24.93\00:13:28.04 recognize, our viewers to recognize, that the new 00:13:28.07\00:13:31.14 covenant is more than many are teaching it to be 00:13:31.17\00:13:34.24 in these last days. 00:13:34.28\00:13:35.61 The new covenant is inclusive in Hebrews 00:13:35.64\00:13:37.98 Chapter 8 and 10. 00:13:38.01\00:13:40.48 It is inclusive not only in the forgiveness but God 00:13:40.52\00:13:43.05 putting His laws in our hearts and minds so that we 00:13:43.08\00:13:45.59 will not be workers of iniquity. 00:13:45.62\00:13:47.16 So that when we know God and come into a relationship 00:13:47.19\00:13:49.79 with God we will be workers of righteousness and be 00:13:49.82\00:13:52.43 in harmony with His Commandments. 00:13:52.46\00:13:53.96 We will be keeping His law as a law of love to God 00:13:54.00\00:13:56.73 and unto our neighbors. 00:13:56.80\00:13:58.40 Don't go away, we will be right back! 00:13:58.43\00:14:00.20
