Hi friends and welcome to 00:00:20.75\00:00:22.42 Books of the Book! 00:00:22.45\00:00:23.79 We are studying the book of 00:00:23.82\00:00:25.15 Daniel and we are in Daniel 00:00:25.19\00:00:26.52 Chapter 10. 00:00:26.55\00:00:27.89 My name is James Rafferty and I am Ty Gibson 00:00:27.92\00:00:29.89 and thank you for joining us. 00:00:29.92\00:00:31.33 If you can have easy access 00:00:31.36\00:00:32.83 to a Bible open up to chapter 00:00:32.86\00:00:34.30 10 of Daniel. 00:00:34.30\00:00:35.83 James this is a chapter in the book of Daniel 00:00:35.86\00:00:39.87 that is just packed full of information that is 00:00:39.90\00:00:43.84 valuable and beautiful. 00:00:43.87\00:00:45.77 First thing we want to notice here in Daniel Chapter 10, 00:00:45.81\00:00:49.74 is that Daniel has an encounter with none other 00:00:49.78\00:00:54.05 than the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:00:54.08\00:00:56.18 You know is really interesting Ty when you look 00:00:56.22\00:00:58.29 at the Chapter, as a whole, 00:00:58.32\00:01:00.12 you do not see a lot of prophecy in here. 00:01:00.16\00:01:02.02 I remember when I used to study Daniel, 00:01:02.06\00:01:03.89 I used to think Daniel 10, 00:01:03.93\00:01:05.83 there's not a lot in there so I don't really 00:01:05.86\00:01:07.76 need to study that because I am into prophecy and I 00:01:07.83\00:01:10.23 want to understand end time events. 00:01:10.27\00:01:11.60 I want to see the beast, I want to understand what 00:01:11.63\00:01:13.34 they mean, and I would skip over Daniel 10. 00:01:13.40\00:01:16.24 It's like when I was a kid and my mom would say, 00:01:16.27\00:01:18.61 eat your vegetables. 00:01:18.64\00:01:19.97 I wanted to get them out of the way, 00:01:20.01\00:01:22.44 because I didn't like them, 00:01:22.48\00:01:23.81 and get to the good stuff on the plate. 00:01:23.85\00:01:26.11 Potatoes, gravy, and so Daniel 10 was like, 00:01:26.15\00:01:28.75 let's get this out of the way. 00:01:28.78\00:01:31.39 When I was a kid I realized, at lease later on in life, 00:01:31.42\00:01:34.49 that looking back the vegetables were the good stuff. 00:01:34.52\00:01:37.59 The vegetables were what nurtured and grew me, 00:01:37.63\00:01:40.56 made me strong. 00:01:40.60\00:01:41.90 That is the same with Daniel 10, 00:01:41.93\00:01:43.83 Daniel 10 is a the good stuff. 00:01:43.87\00:01:45.73 Why? Because Daniel 10 is where Daniel encounters Christ. 00:01:45.77\00:01:50.67 Daniel 10 is where we see a man in an experience of 00:01:50.71\00:01:54.34 sanctification and we learned what it feels like, 00:01:54.38\00:01:57.95 what you experience in sanctification. 00:01:57.98\00:02:00.48 It is informative to the Christian experience. 00:02:00.52\00:02:03.42 Daniel says in verse 2, he was mourning for 3 full weeks. 00:02:03.45\00:02:07.32 It says that he ate no pleasant food, no meat, no wine 00:02:07.36\00:02:11.19 came into his mouth nor did he anoint himself at all 00:02:11.23\00:02:15.00 till 3 whole weeks were fulfilled. 00:02:15.03\00:02:19.00 Then it opens before him, that Jesus 00:02:19.03\00:02:22.97 appears in glorious form. 00:02:23.00\00:02:25.74 This appearing of Jesus to Daniel is very striking and 00:02:25.77\00:02:31.35 similar to another appearance of Jesus to 00:02:31.38\00:02:34.18 John the Revelator in the book of Revelation. 00:02:34.22\00:02:37.05 First let's read the one here in chapter 10 of Daniel. 00:02:37.09\00:02:40.82 He says in verses 5 and 6, verse 5, "I lifted up my eyes" 00:02:40.89\00:02:44.53 "and looked and behold a certain man clothed in linen," 00:02:44.56\00:02:48.16 it says James, "who's waist was girded with gold," 00:02:48.20\00:02:51.17 then in verse 6, "his body was like beryl," 00:02:51.20\00:02:54.37 "he is face like the appearance of lightning," 00:02:54.40\00:02:57.54 this is important to highlight here. 00:02:57.57\00:02:59.61 "His eyes like torches of fire, his arms and his feet like" 00:02:59.64\00:03:03.75 "burnished or polished brass in color." 00:03:03.78\00:03:06.15 "The sound of his words were like the 00:03:06.18\00:03:08.52 "voice of a multitude." 00:03:08.55\00:03:10.22 What a vision! 00:03:10.29\00:03:11.62 It's incredible Ty, what we're looking at here is we are 00:03:11.65\00:03:14.39 looking at Daniel seeing a man who is identified as clothed 00:03:14.42\00:03:17.36 in linen, it's not Jesus yet in Daniel's mind. 00:03:17.39\00:03:20.56 He is not sure who this being is 00:03:20.60\00:03:22.26 But we know it's Jesus because 00:03:22.30\00:03:23.97 we can see the seven characteristics, 00:03:24.03\00:03:26.13 "the clothed in linen," 00:03:26.17\00:03:27.87 "the fine gold, the beryl," 00:03:27.90\00:03:29.40 "the appearance of lightning," 00:03:29.44\00:03:31.04 "the eyes as lamps of fire, 00:03:31.07\00:03:32.57 "arms and feet like colored polished brass," 00:03:32.64\00:03:35.71 "and the words of the multitude." 00:03:35.74\00:03:37.08 We see all these similar characteristics in the book of 00:03:37.11\00:03:40.45 Revelation, specifically in Revelation chapters 1 and 2. 00:03:40.48\00:03:44.12 In chapter 1 in Revelation beginning right here in 00:03:44.15\00:03:48.16 verse 13, John is in vision on the Lord's Day. 00:03:48.19\00:03:52.13 And he sees one "like the Son of Man, clothed with a" 00:03:52.16\00:03:55.90 "garment down to the foot, and girded about his waist" 00:03:55.93\00:03:59.63 "with a golden girdle." 00:03:59.67\00:04:01.07 "He is head and he is hair were white like wool," 00:04:01.10\00:04:03.57 "as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;" 00:04:03.61\00:04:06.34 "and his feet like brass as if they burned in a furnace;" 00:04:06.37\00:04:09.04 "and his voice is as the sound of many waters." 00:04:09.08\00:04:11.98 And in Revelation 2:18 the same person which is the 00:04:12.01\00:04:14.88 Son of Man, in chapter 1, 00:04:14.92\00:04:16.92 is identified to the church Thyatira. 00:04:16.95\00:04:20.09 "these things saith the Son of God," 00:04:20.16\00:04:23.12 "who has eyes like to a flame of fire," 00:04:23.16\00:04:26.13 "and his feet like fine brass." 00:04:26.16\00:04:27.50 The Son of Man, another phrase for Jesus, 00:04:27.56\00:04:30.07 the Son of God, Jesus Himself, 00:04:30.10\00:04:31.83 it's the same certain person that is clothed in linen 00:04:31.87\00:04:36.34 that appears to Daniel. 00:04:36.37\00:04:37.71 The comparison is very clear. 00:04:37.74\00:04:39.54 It is a very striking comparison 00:04:39.57\00:04:41.64 and identification. 00:04:41.68\00:04:43.01 Jesus is the one who appears to 00:04:43.04\00:04:45.68 Daniel in Daniel Chapter 10. 00:04:45.71\00:04:48.45 What is really powerful about this Ty, 00:04:48.48\00:04:50.72 you see a progression of Daniel's experience with God. 00:04:50.75\00:04:55.52 He begins by purposing in his 00:04:55.56\00:04:58.03 heart, Daniel Chapter 1. 00:04:58.06\00:04:59.43 Then he gets a vision through 00:04:59.46\00:05:01.20 Nebuchadnezzar, which is again given to him 00:05:01.26\00:05:03.70 and he interprets it. 00:05:03.73\00:05:05.07 Then he gets his own visions in Daniel 7 and onward. 00:05:05.10\00:05:08.40 Then Gabriel comes and visits him. 00:05:08.44\00:05:10.61 You see this progression taken place. 00:05:10.64\00:05:12.71 Now you get Daniel Chapter 10, and it is incredible, 00:05:12.74\00:05:16.28 now Jesus Himself, God Himself in the person of 00:05:16.31\00:05:20.25 Jesus Christ comes to visit Daniel. 00:05:20.28\00:05:23.25 Not an Angel, not a dream or a vision, 00:05:23.28\00:05:26.19 not someone else's dream or vision, but God Himself. 00:05:26.22\00:05:28.96 This is amazing and it's obvious that this 00:05:28.99\00:05:31.63 is overwhelming to him. 00:05:31.66\00:05:33.63 The vision of this glorious being in verses 5 and 6 00:05:33.66\00:05:37.47 overcomes Daniel and in verse 7 it says, 00:05:37.50\00:05:39.87 "he was filled with great terror and he fell upon" 00:05:39.90\00:05:43.51 "his hands and knees and upon his face." 00:05:43.54\00:05:46.37 It says in verse 8 "that he is comeliness," 00:05:46.41\00:05:49.21 an old English word for beauty, "was turned in him" 00:05:49.24\00:05:52.85 "into corruption." 00:05:52.88\00:05:54.22 In other words, Daniel began to realize his own 00:05:54.25\00:05:59.55 sinfulness in the presence of this One 00:05:59.59\00:06:03.16 who appears to him, Jesus Christ. 00:06:03.19\00:06:05.76 And Daniel was a man who could stand without fault 00:06:05.79\00:06:07.73 before his enemies. 00:06:07.76\00:06:09.06 Daniel is a man who is blameless before those 00:06:09.10\00:06:12.07 who were seeking to find fault with him. 00:06:12.13\00:06:13.74 Who is seeking to mudslinging in the political world. 00:06:13.77\00:06:16.07 Daniel is exemplifying here friends, 00:06:16.10\00:06:18.57 what sanctification looks like. 00:06:18.61\00:06:20.18 Sanctification, in the follower of Christ, 00:06:20.21\00:06:22.51 does not look like I am holier than you. 00:06:22.54\00:06:24.81 I'm better than you. I'm more righteous than you. 00:06:24.85\00:06:27.62 Sanctification is the appearance of meekness and humility. 00:06:27.65\00:06:31.72 So much so that when you come in contact with Christ, 00:06:31.75\00:06:34.46 the more you see of Christ the less grandeur, 00:06:34.49\00:06:37.23 the less righteousness, 00:06:37.26\00:06:38.66 the less goodness you see in yourself. 00:06:38.69\00:06:40.06 You feel like you have no strength, 00:06:40.10\00:06:41.40 you are not good, you are not righteous, 00:06:41.43\00:06:43.77 and while the other men fled, 00:06:43.83\00:06:45.60 who are with Daniel when this vision comes, 00:06:45.63\00:06:47.27 he himself retains no strength, 00:06:47.30\00:06:49.67 and he falls on his face as though he is dead. 00:06:49.70\00:06:52.71 In the first 9 it says that a deep sleep fell 00:06:52.74\00:06:55.71 upon him, as he laid there upon his face before 00:06:55.74\00:06:58.68 the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:06:58.71\00:07:00.65 Now Ty what is interesting about verse 9 is the 00:07:00.68\00:07:02.85 transition that is taking place. 00:07:02.88\00:07:04.29 He has no strength and it says there in verse 9, 00:07:04.32\00:07:07.69 "yet I heard the voice of his words:" 00:07:07.72\00:07:10.96 "and when I heard the voice of his words," 00:07:10.99\00:07:13.90 "then I was in a deep sleep," 00:07:13.93\00:07:15.93 Jesus says in Matthew 11:28, 00:07:15.96\00:07:17.80 "come unto me all Ye that labor" 00:07:17.83\00:07:19.60 "and are heavy laden and I will give you rest." 00:07:19.63\00:07:22.60 Daniel is terrified, the men are terrified, 00:07:22.67\00:07:25.64 he has no strength, no righteousness and yet 00:07:25.67\00:07:28.98 Jesus, when he speaks, when he speaks to him. 00:07:29.01\00:07:32.21 When God doesn't speak to us, when we don't feel God is 00:07:32.25\00:07:35.52 present with us. 00:07:35.55\00:07:36.89 We don't feel that God is communicating to us, 00:07:36.92\00:07:38.85 we can be overwhelmed with guilt and feel unworthy. 00:07:38.89\00:07:42.29 We can feel separated from God. 00:07:42.32\00:07:43.66 But God assures Daniel that he has His favor. 00:07:43.69\00:07:46.76 He speaks to him. 00:07:46.80\00:07:48.10 If you get in a tiff with your wife, 00:07:48.13\00:07:49.46 I know you never do. 00:07:49.50\00:07:50.83 My wife and I sometimes have what we call 00:07:50.87\00:07:52.27 these intense moments of fellowship. 00:07:52.30\00:07:54.60 When we get in a difference, the words stop. 00:07:54.64\00:07:57.31 There is a lack of communication and that 00:07:57.34\00:08:00.08 does not go well. 00:08:00.11\00:08:01.44 Daniel is in a situation where he is feeling like does 00:08:01.48\00:08:04.11 God love me? Does God except me? 00:08:04.15\00:08:05.98 Is He still there for me? 00:08:06.05\00:08:07.38 When he hears the words he gets the peace of God. 00:08:07.42\00:08:10.32 He comes and feels that God has accepted him. 00:08:10.35\00:08:13.36 He has the rest that Jesus promises us. 00:08:13.39\00:08:15.66 Then the angel Gabriel appears again in verse 10. 00:08:15.69\00:08:20.56 It says, "a hand touched me, which made me tremble" 00:08:20.60\00:08:25.40 "on my knees and on my palms of my hands." 00:08:25.43\00:08:29.70 And notice this James in verse 11, "and he said to me," 00:08:29.74\00:08:33.38 that's Gabriel speaking, "oh Daniel," 00:08:33.41\00:08:35.41 "a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I" 00:08:35.44\00:08:40.22 "speak to you and stand upright: for I have been sent to you." 00:08:40.25\00:08:44.85 And this is, I mean just think about this, he is filled 00:08:44.89\00:08:49.89 with terror, he is overcome, he is on his face, 00:08:49.92\00:08:53.23 and trembling and here's the message that Gabriel gives. 00:08:53.26\00:08:56.63 Gabriel says, Daniel God loves you greatly. 00:08:56.67\00:09:01.37 You are greatly beloved of God. 00:09:01.40\00:09:03.00 Stand on your feet we need to do some communicating here. 00:09:03.04\00:09:06.17 I have appeared not to cause you to tremble, and Jesus 00:09:06.21\00:09:09.28 didn't appear to cause you to tremble, but to assure you are 00:09:09.31\00:09:12.18 deeply loved by God. 00:09:12.21\00:09:15.02 That is the very time we need to be assured of God's love. 00:09:15.05\00:09:17.49 Friends, there are times in our lives when we feel like 00:09:17.52\00:09:20.42 we are no good, we are worthless, we have nothing in us 00:09:20.49\00:09:23.36 that commends us to God. 00:09:23.39\00:09:24.73 That is the very time that we need to know 00:09:24.76\00:09:26.33 that God loves us. 00:09:26.36\00:09:27.66 Because when God communicates that He loves in that time, 00:09:27.73\00:09:30.77 it is based on who He is and not based on who we are. 00:09:30.80\00:09:33.80 It is based upon His goodness, His righteousness, 00:09:33.84\00:09:36.81 not our goodness or our righteousness. 00:09:36.84\00:09:38.74 So this speaks powerful truths to those of us who are 00:09:38.77\00:09:42.88 followers of the Lord because as we progress in our 00:09:42.91\00:09:46.78 Christian experience we can begin to think that 00:09:46.82\00:09:50.62 we are accepted of God because of how good or holier, 00:09:50.69\00:09:55.32 righteous or obedient we have become in our 00:09:55.39\00:09:58.36 Christian experience. 00:09:58.39\00:09:59.73 Daniel is sharing with us right here in Daniel 10 00:09:59.76\00:10:02.23 that it is still not based on our goodness, 00:10:02.26\00:10:04.27 it's based on God's love to us. 00:10:04.30\00:10:06.13 Man, he stands up James, and we go at the latter part 00:10:06.17\00:10:10.57 of verse 11 and he is still trembling. 00:10:10.61\00:10:12.34 Gabriel told him, you are greatly beloved, stand up 00:10:12.37\00:10:16.41 you do not need to be terrified, stand before me, 00:10:16.44\00:10:20.48 I need to share with you now concerning 00:10:20.52\00:10:23.05 the vision that you had. 00:10:23.08\00:10:24.42 He says to him, don't be afraid, in verse 12. 00:10:24.45\00:10:28.72 He has to keep assuring Daniel. 00:10:28.76\00:10:31.03 Daniel doesn't become nonchalant in Gabriel's presence 00:10:31.06\00:10:34.30 He doesn't take on an attitude of ill-reverence he is 00:10:34.30\00:10:37.50 still trembling and yet the angel is trying 00:10:37.53\00:10:39.77 to assure him. 00:10:39.80\00:10:41.14 I don't know if this is true or not James, 00:10:41.17\00:10:42.50 because I haven't taken the time to count these in 00:10:42.54\00:10:45.04 Scripture, but in verse 12 where it says fear not, 00:10:45.07\00:10:48.04 or do not fear, someone has said that this is the 00:10:48.08\00:10:51.01 most often repeated phrase in Scripture. 00:10:51.05\00:10:54.78 Every time a human being has an encounter with God, 00:10:54.82\00:10:57.52 or an angel sent from God, the message is 00:10:57.55\00:10:59.72 don't be afraid, fear not. 00:10:59.79\00:11:02.82 That is an appropriate message because God wants to assure 00:11:02.86\00:11:05.96 us in His presence, He wants to communicate with us. 00:11:05.99\00:11:09.73 You see that repeated whenever an angel visits or comes, 00:11:09.76\00:11:13.50 because the brightness and 00:11:13.54\00:11:15.44 the glory and the goodness and 00:11:15.47\00:11:17.34 the love of God contrasts 00:11:17.37\00:11:18.87 with who we are with our 00:11:18.91\00:11:20.38 unrighteousness, with our lack of goodness, 00:11:20.41\00:11:22.34 does cause fear, a natural fear. 00:11:22.38\00:11:24.68 I have never had such an encounter, 00:11:24.71\00:11:26.98 but I know that just in 00:11:27.02\00:11:29.02 searching the Scriptures 00:11:29.05\00:11:31.35 and having encounters heart 00:11:31.39\00:11:33.62 to heart with the Savior and learning about God sometimes 00:11:33.66\00:11:38.73 has just bowed me down with a sense of unworthiness. 00:11:38.76\00:11:42.03 Not because God is pressing a sense of unworthiness 00:11:42.06\00:11:45.37 upon me, but because God is holy. 00:11:45.40\00:11:47.80 God is good, God is righteous, God is love and 00:11:47.84\00:11:52.01 everything that I see in Him causes me to see in 00:11:52.04\00:11:54.98 myself those things that are out of harmony with Him. 00:11:55.01\00:11:58.15 He does not leave me there, He wants to lift me up so 00:11:58.18\00:12:01.38 that I had the privilege of becoming more 00:12:01.42\00:12:03.12 and more like Him in character 00:12:03.18\00:12:05.95 so that the contrast becomes less distinct. 00:12:05.99\00:12:08.69 Absolutely so in that sense every one of us has had that 00:12:08.72\00:12:11.66 encounter who have pursued after God and sought to follow God. 00:12:11.69\00:12:15.00 We all have encountered Him in such a way that causes 00:12:15.03\00:12:18.13 us to tremble unto fear. 00:12:18.20\00:12:19.53 We all need this message, fear not. 00:12:19.57\00:12:22.00 It is a beautiful message as we tremble before the Lord. 00:12:22.04\00:12:25.14 It is a beautiful assurance to us that we need 00:12:25.17\00:12:27.58 over and over again. 00:12:27.61\00:12:28.94 As we move on here look at how Daniel gradually gains 00:12:28.98\00:12:34.02 more strength and more courage. 00:12:34.05\00:12:35.38 He first of all is trembling and then 00:12:35.45\00:12:37.92 falls into a sleep. 00:12:37.95\00:12:39.29 He's resting Christ and then there are the words 00:12:39.32\00:12:42.29 that bring that experience, that rest to Him 00:12:42.32\00:12:44.53 the words he hears spoken. 00:12:44.56\00:12:45.89 He awakens and is touched that caused him to get to his 00:12:45.93\00:12:49.50 hands and knees and then he is touched again and he 00:12:49.53\00:12:53.34 stands upon his feet still trembling. 00:12:53.37\00:12:55.64 You see a progression here that is taking place. 00:12:55.67\00:12:57.97 Friends we cannot make one move toward God. 00:12:58.01\00:13:01.11 We cannot stand in His presence. 00:13:01.14\00:13:03.45 We can't even bow in His presence. 00:13:03.48\00:13:05.68 We cannot rise to our feet, we cannot move toward Him 00:13:05.71\00:13:09.28 without His divine intervention. 00:13:09.32\00:13:12.15 Without Him coming to us. 00:13:12.19\00:13:13.66 Without Him touching us and without Him speaking to us, 00:13:13.69\00:13:15.89 there is no goodness or righteousness in us. 00:13:15.92\00:13:18.66 God is consistently reassuring us that He loves us 00:13:18.69\00:13:22.23 and in that He is pursuing us. 00:13:22.26\00:13:26.57 It is the divine initiative of God toward us 00:13:26.60\00:13:30.21 that draws us to Him. 00:13:30.24\00:13:31.61 Jesus said this, He said in John chapter 12:32. 00:13:31.64\00:13:36.48 "If I be lifted up, I will draw all men unto me." 00:13:36.51\00:13:41.25 That is God's plan, that is what God is seeking to do. 00:13:41.28\00:13:44.65 Here the book of Daniel chapter 10 we see God working 00:13:44.69\00:13:48.02 to draw each one of us unto Himself. 00:13:48.09\00:13:50.56 Now we have a huge insight into this controversy that is 00:13:50.59\00:13:56.00 coming up in Daniel chapter 10, so don't go away. 00:13:56.03\00:13:58.20 Because we are going to be right back! 00:13:58.23\00:14:00.57
