Welcome back friends to our study of Daniel Chapter 9. 00:00:01.93\00:00:04.23 James now we have come to the time portion of the prophecy 00:00:04.30\00:00:07.70 where we pointed out that Daniel himself was sick 00:00:07.74\00:00:10.84 for a number of days. 00:00:10.87\00:00:12.87 He was just astonished and 00:00:12.91\00:00:14.98 amazed by the vision. 00:00:15.01\00:00:16.81 He didn't understand it, we see that he humbled himself 00:00:16.85\00:00:20.32 before the Lord and identified with the sin of his people 00:00:20.35\00:00:23.82 rather than feeling arrogant and above them. 00:00:23.85\00:00:26.22 That state of mind prepared him to receive the answer to 00:00:26.25\00:00:31.09 his prayer, Gabriel comes now to explain the vision and 00:00:31.13\00:00:35.90 begins to break it down point by point, 00:00:35.93\00:00:39.33 he explains the time prophecy. 00:00:39.37\00:00:41.04 The key element here to this 00:00:41.07\00:00:42.94 time prophecy is in verse 25. 00:00:42.97\00:00:44.81 "Know therefore and understand" 00:00:44.84\00:00:46.21 "from the going forth of the" 00:00:46.24\00:00:47.61 "Commandment to restore and to" 00:00:47.64\00:00:48.98 "build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince. " 00:00:49.01\00:00:50.88 That word Messiah means the Anointed One. 00:00:50.95\00:00:54.05 When you go to the New Testament there are two key verses, 00:00:54.08\00:00:57.79 one of them is in Luke chapter 1, and the other one is in 00:00:57.82\00:01:01.56 Luke chapter 3. 00:01:01.59\00:01:02.99 One is in Luke chapter 3, and 1 is in Luke chapter 1. 00:01:03.02\00:01:08.16 Or excuse me chapter 2. 00:01:08.20\00:01:10.00 The one in Luke 2 verse 1 it directs us to the time 00:01:10.03\00:01:14.00 when Jesus was born. 00:01:14.04\00:01:15.37 It says here, "it came to pass in those days that there" 00:01:15.40\00:01:17.44 "went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that" 00:01:17.47\00:01:20.64 "all the world should be taxed. " 00:01:20.68\00:01:22.34 This gives us a time frame for the birth of Jesus Christ. 00:01:22.38\00:01:26.45 It was the time frame of Caesar Augustus. 00:01:26.48\00:01:29.08 Shortly after Caesar's death we have another ruler in Rome. 00:01:29.12\00:01:35.29 In Luke chapter 3, now Luke, when he wrote the gospel, 00:01:35.32\00:01:38.19 Luke was more of a historian. 00:01:38.23\00:01:39.73 This is why he makes reference to the Caesar's, the rulers in 00:01:39.76\00:01:44.47 the kingdom when Jesus was born. 00:01:44.50\00:01:46.67 In this case in Luke chapter 3, Jesus was baptized. 00:01:46.74\00:01:50.87 It says here in Luke 3 verse 1, "now in the 15th year 00:01:50.91\00:01:54.84 of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being" 00:01:54.88\00:01:58.78 "governor," and so on. 00:01:58.81\00:02:00.22 In that year, the 15th year of the reign of 00:02:00.25\00:02:02.38 Tiberius Caesar, which is by the way a historical date 00:02:02.42\00:02:06.89 that you can find anywhere and verify anywhere. 00:02:06.92\00:02:10.26 You read in this context that in verse 21, 00:02:10.29\00:02:13.53 "all the people were being baptized by John the Baptist. " 00:02:13.56\00:02:17.23 "That Jesus also being baptized and praying, that heaven" 00:02:17.27\00:02:20.87 "was opened, and the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily" 00:02:20.90\00:02:24.47 "shape, like a dove upon him. " 00:02:24.51\00:02:25.91 This is the anointing, the Messiah confirmation, 00:02:25.94\00:02:30.01 or the fulfillment of that prophecy. 00:02:30.05\00:02:32.85 He is being anointed and a voice from heaven comes and 00:02:32.88\00:02:35.65 says, "this is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased. " 00:02:35.68\00:02:38.45 And it says in verse 23, "and Jesus himself began to be 00:02:38.49\00:02:41.22 about 30 years of age. " 00:02:41.26\00:02:43.99 So Jesus is 30 when He is anointed. 00:02:44.03\00:02:46.76 This is 27 A.D. when He was anointed. 00:02:46.80\00:02:49.40 That was 483 Years, that is what the prophecy said, 00:02:49.46\00:02:51.80 69 weeks. 00:02:51.83\00:02:53.17 If you take 27 from 483 you go all the way 00:02:53.20\00:02:56.07 back down to 457. 00:02:56.10\00:02:57.57 So for 457 would be the beginning date that is referred 00:02:57.61\00:03:02.24 to in chapter 9 of Daniel verse 25, "know therefore and 00:03:02.31\00:03:05.81 "understand that the going forth from the Commandment" 00:03:05.88\00:03:09.38 "to rebuild and restore Jerusalem until- - -." 00:03:09.42\00:03:13.52 "Messiah the Prince will be. " 00:03:13.56\00:03:15.52 So very clearly here we have 457 B.C. reaching forward to 00:03:15.56\00:03:21.20 27 which is the year in which Jesus was anointed as the 00:03:21.23\00:03:25.27 Messiah for Ministry, He began His public ministry. 00:03:25.30\00:03:29.34 Exactly, exactly! It is all biblical. 00:03:29.37\00:03:31.01 Luke 2, Luke 3, right here in the confirmation of this 00:03:31.04\00:03:35.11 prophecy, now when you go from that point onward, 00:03:35.14\00:03:38.15 you find another week in verse 26. 00:03:38.18\00:03:41.25 "After three score in two weeks," which is inconclusive 00:03:41.28\00:03:43.89 in the seven weeks, "Messiah shall be cut off. " 00:03:43.92\00:03:46.15 "But not for Himself," now, can about the baptism Ty. 00:03:46.19\00:03:49.16 That phrase cut off is not referring to His being 00:03:49.19\00:03:52.16 anointed by the Holy Spirit. 00:03:52.19\00:03:53.53 This phrase is talking about something entirely different. 00:03:53.56\00:03:56.16 I think this is probably the most crucial verse of 00:03:56.20\00:04:00.54 the book Daniel because it refers to none other than 00:04:00.57\00:04:04.81 the cross of Jesus Christ. 00:04:04.84\00:04:07.08 When it says the 00:04:07.11\00:04:08.44 Messiah shall be cut off, 00:04:08.48\00:04:09.81 I think is incredibility 00:04:09.84\00:04:11.18 insightful and beautiful. 00:04:11.21\00:04:12.58 The prophecy then says, "but not for himself. " 00:04:12.61\00:04:16.82 If not for Himself then for who? 00:04:16.85\00:04:18.82 The obvious answer is that Jesus was cut off, 00:04:18.85\00:04:21.92 that is crucified. 00:04:21.99\00:04:23.32 He gave His life, a sacrifice for sin, not for Himself 00:04:23.36\00:04:26.93 but for us, this highlights the self-sacrificing, 00:04:26.96\00:04:30.23 other centered, self giving love of Jesus 00:04:30.27\00:04:33.84 manifested at the cross. 00:04:33.87\00:04:35.20 I can't keep quiet. 00:04:35.24\00:04:36.57 While you're saying all these things, you understand, 00:04:36.60\00:04:37.94 I keep quiet any other time. 00:04:37.97\00:04:39.54 This is the corner Stone, 00:04:39.57\00:04:41.51 the foundation stone of Christianity. 00:04:41.54\00:04:44.55 This is the truth about all of the truths. 00:04:44.58\00:04:46.51 He was cut off but not for Himself. 00:04:46.55\00:04:47.88 You know it is amazing that you could summarize the whole 00:04:47.92\00:04:50.32 plan of salvation in that simple phrase. 00:04:50.35\00:04:53.12 This is speaking of Jesus Christ finishing transgression, 00:04:53.15\00:04:56.32 making and end to sin, making reconciliation for iniquity, 00:04:56.36\00:04:59.53 everlasting righteousness, sealing up the prophecies, 00:04:59.56\00:05:02.16 sealing up the vision, 00:05:02.20\00:05:03.53 and preparing to anoint the most holy Place. 00:05:03.57\00:05:05.17 Very similar language used in Hebrew 9:26 where it says 00:05:05.20\00:05:08.60 that He, the Messiah, Jesus, will appear once at the end 00:05:08.64\00:05:12.01 of the ages to do away with sin, to put away sin, 00:05:12.04\00:05:15.61 by the sacrifice of Himself. 00:05:15.64\00:05:18.85 Again here we see this idea that the Messiah is crucified, 00:05:18.88\00:05:22.28 but not for Himself. 00:05:22.32\00:05:23.65 He gives Himself a sacrifice for sin. 00:05:23.69\00:05:26.86 What verse is that again? 00:05:26.89\00:05:28.66 Hebrews 9:26, Hebrews 9:26! 00:05:28.72\00:05:30.43 So in that context, that New Testament context, 00:05:30.46\00:05:33.29 you have again a confirmation of what is taking place here. 00:05:33.33\00:05:36.60 Now notice when this takes place, in verse 27, again going 00:05:36.63\00:05:39.87 back to a prophecy about the Messiah. 00:05:39.90\00:05:41.97 It says "he will confirm the covenant with many for 1 week" 00:05:42.04\00:05:46.07 "and in the midst of the week" the middle of the week. 00:05:46.14\00:05:48.44 "He will cause the sacrifice oblation to cease. " 00:05:48.48\00:05:51.11 It's the same thing all over again. 00:05:51.15\00:05:52.65 It is telling us that when Jesus is crucified, 00:05:52.68\00:05:56.82 the sacrificial services that had been going on for 00:05:56.85\00:06:00.32 centuries, in Hebrew history, 00:06:00.36\00:06:02.59 will be brought to a conclusion. 00:06:02.62\00:06:04.79 Brought to an end, Why? 00:06:04.83\00:06:06.16 Because Jesus is the fulfillment of all those typical 00:06:06.19\00:06:09.93 or symbolic sacrifices. 00:06:09.96\00:06:12.33 That is exactly what happened when He was on the cross. 00:06:12.37\00:06:14.94 Friends, that temple, the curtain of the temple was rent 00:06:14.97\00:06:17.51 in two from top to bottom. 00:06:17.57\00:06:19.41 It was a thick curtain. 00:06:19.44\00:06:21.34 It was rent in two and that 00:06:21.38\00:06:23.21 whole system of sacrifice came 00:06:23.24\00:06:25.31 to and end and it was fulfilled by Jesus. 00:06:25.35\00:06:26.98 Why in the midst of the week? 00:06:27.02\00:06:28.75 Because when you look at the 70 weeks, only 69 of them 00:06:28.78\00:06:32.55 had been fulfilled so far. 00:06:32.59\00:06:33.92 There is still one left, that last seven week period is 00:06:33.96\00:06:36.89 still to be fulfilled in the context of the life of Jesus. 00:06:36.93\00:06:40.03 He is anointed at the beginning of the last seven weeks, 00:06:40.06\00:06:43.57 27 A.D., and in the middle of that week, 31 A.D. He dies 00:06:43.60\00:06:46.60 on the cross for our sins and the sacrificial system 00:06:46.63\00:06:49.57 comes to an end. 00:06:49.60\00:06:50.94 At the end of that last week, that 70th week, A.D. 34, 00:06:50.97\00:06:55.04 the gospel goes to the Gentile world. 00:06:55.11\00:06:57.78 The language in verse 27 of 00:06:57.85\00:07:00.15 Daniel 9 James, it says that, 00:07:00.18\00:07:01.75 "He," that is the Messiah, 00:07:01.82\00:07:03.92 "shall confirm the covenant. " 00:07:03.95\00:07:06.02 This is crucial. 00:07:06.05\00:07:07.39 This is referring to the new covenant. 00:07:07.42\00:07:09.59 Jesus came to our world to fulfill, to confirm, to ratify, 00:07:09.62\00:07:16.20 to accomplish the new covenant. 00:07:16.26\00:07:18.43 Which refers back to verse 24. 00:07:18.50\00:07:20.64 The 7 points of Daniel chapter 9 verse 24, those seven points 00:07:20.67\00:07:25.87 to finish transgression, make an end of the sin, make 00:07:25.91\00:07:28.74 a reconciliation for the people, bring in everlasting 00:07:28.78\00:07:31.61 righteousness, seal up the vision, seal up the prophecy, 00:07:31.65\00:07:34.45 and anoint the Most Holy. 00:07:34.48\00:07:35.82 All of those delineated items are brought together under 00:07:35.85\00:07:40.49 this one heading, confirm the covenant. 00:07:40.52\00:07:42.99 The new covenant is fulfilled to completely accomplish in 00:07:43.02\00:07:47.73 the person of Jesus Christ as He comes to the middle 00:07:47.76\00:07:51.43 of the 70th week and is crucified. 00:07:51.47\00:07:53.84 Praise God! This is why this prophecy is the most powerful 00:07:53.87\00:07:56.81 prophecy that you could find in the book of Daniel, 00:07:56.84\00:07:59.74 probably in the whole Bible. 00:07:59.77\00:08:01.34 This brings together and summarizes the whole plan 00:08:01.38\00:08:04.21 of salvation and directs our minds and our hearts and our 00:08:04.25\00:08:07.55 hope completely and entirely to Jesus Christ and what He 00:08:07.58\00:08:10.82 would accomplish within the 70 week period. 00:08:10.85\00:08:13.19 Amen, and it is just fabulous. 00:08:13.25\00:08:14.89 I want to also look at the words we have already mentioned 00:08:14.92\00:08:20.00 and read here, "that the Messiah shall be cut off. " 00:08:20.03\00:08:22.26 I want to mention something about this James. 00:08:22.30\00:08:24.10 I think as Bible students we need to understand what the 00:08:24.13\00:08:29.20 words mean that we are reading, 00:08:29.24\00:08:30.97 and what their historic background is. 00:08:31.01\00:08:32.37 As I looked into this and studied it James, I found out 00:08:32.41\00:08:35.88 that the words "cut off" will be cut off which we identify 00:08:35.91\00:08:39.35 as referring to His crucifixion. 00:08:39.38\00:08:40.82 Those words "cut off" are used frequently in Scripture 00:08:40.85\00:08:44.79 and they refer all the way back to an experience that was 00:08:44.82\00:08:48.76 had by Abraham in Genesis 15. 00:08:48.79\00:08:52.13 In Genesis 15 Abraham received a vision and he was told 00:08:52.16\00:08:55.80 in this vision to take sacrificial animals and 00:08:55.83\00:08:59.67 to sever them in two. 00:08:59.70\00:09:01.10 To cut them in half and to pattern these animals on the 00:09:01.14\00:09:05.11 ground, each half across from the other forming 00:09:05.14\00:09:08.71 a path, as he did that, 00:09:08.74\00:09:10.58 the vision continued and Abraham saw the Lord in the form 00:09:10.65\00:09:15.45 of a pillar of fire pass through those pieces as they 00:09:15.48\00:09:20.29 were cut off, as they were cut in half. 00:09:20.32\00:09:22.26 The Lord passed through to confirm the covenant. 00:09:22.29\00:09:25.83 This is incredible because it indicates, at this early 00:09:25.86\00:09:28.73 stage of salvation in history, in this vision to Abraham 00:09:28.76\00:09:32.40 that in order to save the human race that the Godhead 00:09:32.43\00:09:36.20 Itself would have to undergo an excruciating, horrible 00:09:36.24\00:09:39.97 agony of separation within the Godhead. 00:09:40.01\00:09:42.54 In fact, the son of God would have to be separated from 00:09:42.58\00:09:47.18 the Father and the Holy Spirit. 00:09:47.22\00:09:48.88 Their fellowship would be severed, but this incredible 00:09:48.92\00:09:53.22 sacrifice, not for Himself, but for you and I and the 00:09:53.25\00:09:57.53 whole human race. 00:09:57.56\00:09:58.89 It would be a sacrifice of separation between Father, 00:09:58.93\00:10:02.30 Son, and Holy Spirit, what an incredible manifestation 00:10:02.33\00:10:06.00 of self giving love on our behalf. 00:10:06.03\00:10:08.50 Amen, now this prophecy deals with the Messiah and what 00:10:08.54\00:10:11.44 He was to accomplish, but it also deals with the temple. 00:10:11.47\00:10:14.24 It's rebuilding, in which Jeremiah was very interested in, 00:10:14.28\00:10:17.01 and its final destruction in 70 A.D. 00:10:17.05\00:10:19.88 Jesus actually quotes in Matthew chapters 23 and 24. 00:10:19.91\00:10:24.02 He actually quotes, or references to the book of Daniel 00:10:24.05\00:10:28.09 in reference to this very prophecy. 00:10:28.12\00:10:29.79 He says in Matthew 24:15, "and when you shall see therefore 00:10:29.82\00:10:34.93 the abomination of desolation spoken of by Daniel, 00:10:34.93\00:10:38.47 the prophet, stand in the holy place, whoso reads, 00:10:38.50\00:10:42.00 let him understand. 00:10:42.04\00:10:43.64 Jesus was wanting us to understand this prophecy. 00:10:43.67\00:10:45.67 He is understanding or recognizing that this 00:10:45.71\00:10:48.71 abomination of desolation is also spoken of 00:10:48.74\00:10:51.71 in the context of this prophecy. 00:10:51.75\00:10:53.45 You see after Jesus fulfilled a sacrificial offerings and 00:10:53.48\00:10:56.85 the temple curtain was rent in two, the temple was no more 00:10:56.92\00:11:00.32 to be the direct ways of mediation for sins. 00:11:00.36\00:11:05.39 Jesus in heavenly sanctuary, the holy place and being 00:11:05.43\00:11:08.46 anointed now was to be our Mediator. 00:11:08.50\00:11:10.20 After that this temple was going to be destroyed. 00:11:10.23\00:11:12.80 Jesus even told us of this in the context of Matthew 24. 00:11:12.83\00:11:16.34 He said that not one stone would be left on another 00:11:16.37\00:11:19.04 that would not be thrown down. 00:11:19.07\00:11:20.41 So what Jesus is saying here is that you need to understand 00:11:20.44\00:11:23.04 about this abomination of desolation, Why? 00:11:23.08\00:11:25.98 Because according to Matthew 24, 3 times Jesus warns of 00:11:26.01\00:11:29.98 false prophets and the end of time who had a false 00:11:30.02\00:11:32.89 interpretation of these very prophecies. 00:11:32.92\00:11:34.86 That is what is happening right now friends. 00:11:34.89\00:11:36.76 Jesus tells us in no uncertain terms in Matthew 23:37, 00:11:36.79\00:11:40.56 "Oh Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets," 00:11:40.60\00:11:44.10 "and stones them which are said unto thee, how often" 00:11:44.13\00:11:47.60 "I would I have gathered thy children together", 00:11:47.64\00:11:49.37 "even as a hen gathered her chickens under her wings," 00:11:49.40\00:11:52.54 "but ye would not!" 00:11:52.57\00:11:53.91 "Behold your house is left into desolate," verse 38. 00:11:53.94\00:11:56.88 "For I say unto you, ye shall not see me henceforth," 00:11:56.91\00:12:00.38 "till ye say Blessed Is He That Cometh 00:12:00.42\00:12:02.85 In The Name Of The Lord. " 00:12:02.88\00:12:04.29 Until the end of time, until Jesus returns the temple 00:12:04.35\00:12:07.56 in Jerusalem was to be left desolate and our eyes would 00:12:07.59\00:12:10.76 be directed to the heavenly sanctuary. 00:12:10.79\00:12:12.29 These words that you have shared here James, 00:12:12.36\00:12:14.73 from Matthew 23 and 24, are directly, and as you mentioned, 00:12:14.76\00:12:18.90 refer back to Daniel 9:27 in the latter part that says, 00:12:18.97\00:12:22.74 "on the wings of abominations shall be one who makes" 00:12:22.77\00:12:26.47 "desolate," the language Jesus used referring to this verse. 00:12:26.51\00:12:29.81 "Even until the consummation," that is the conclusion of 00:12:29.84\00:12:33.28 human history in the second coming of Jesus. 00:12:33.35\00:12:35.12 "Which is determined and is poured out upon the desolate" 00:12:35.15\00:12:39.32 the final judgment of this desolating power that is 00:12:39.35\00:12:43.43 brought to view in the book of Daniel. 00:12:43.46\00:12:45.09 Absolutely, so there you have it friends. 00:12:45.13\00:12:46.66 What we see here is a two fold prophecy, the temple 00:12:46.70\00:12:50.17 and the Messiah and it is our hope that you will recognize 00:12:50.20\00:12:53.74 that this prophecy points us to Jesus Christ as the one 00:12:53.77\00:12:57.31 time sacrifice for all sins. 00:12:57.34\00:12:58.87 Amen! 00:12:58.91\00:13:00.91
