Welcome friends to Books 00:00:22.08\00:00:23.52 of the Book. 00:00:23.55\00:00:24.89 We have embarked upon an 00:00:24.92\00:00:26.25 exciting study of the book 00:00:26.29\00:00:27.62 of Daniel and we have now come to Daniel Chapter 7. 00:00:27.66\00:00:29.69 I'm Ty Gibson and I'm James Rafferty and we are in 00:00:29.72\00:00:32.56 an incredible Chapter Ty. 00:00:32.59\00:00:34.46 I have to say that this 00:00:34.46\00:00:36.33 Chapter is one you approach 00:00:36.36\00:00:38.00 with fear and trepidation. 00:00:38.03\00:00:39.57 There is so much here, a lot 00:00:39.60\00:00:41.54 of symbolism and it is going 00:00:41.57\00:00:43.41 to be quite an adventure to move through this. 00:00:43.44\00:00:46.01 It is a dream and it is symbolic 00:00:46.04\00:00:47.88 The symbols are identified partly in the context of the 00:00:47.91\00:00:51.58 Chapter, so we need to get right into it. 00:00:51.61\00:00:54.12 So far the book of Daniel, he hasn't received any visions 00:00:54.15\00:00:59.19 or dreams himself. 00:00:59.22\00:01:00.62 Nebuchadnezzar had received two dreams that had been 00:01:00.66\00:01:03.22 interpreted by Daniel. 00:01:03.26\00:01:04.89 But now in Chapter 7 Daniel in verse 1 says, he received 00:01:04.93\00:01:10.20 a dream and a vision and proceeds to tell the main facts, 00:01:10.23\00:01:15.50 or main points of this vision that he received. 00:01:15.54\00:01:19.47 As the vision unfolds, he says that he saw 4 winds 00:01:19.54\00:01:23.45 stirring, or striving upon the great sea. 00:01:23.48\00:01:26.82 He said that he saw 4 great beasts in verse 3, come up 00:01:26.88\00:01:31.39 out of the sea and each of the beasts was different from 00:01:31.42\00:01:35.66 the other and then delineates these beasts in particular, 00:01:35.69\00:01:40.00 James, he says in verse 4, the first beast was like a lion, 00:01:40.03\00:01:44.27 and with eagle's wings. 00:01:44.30\00:01:45.63 Then down in verse 5 he says, he saw a bear, raised up on 00:01:45.67\00:01:50.54 one side with three ribs in its mouth. 00:01:50.57\00:01:52.11 Then he says in verse 6 then he saw a leopard and the 00:01:52.14\00:01:56.41 leopard had four wings on its back and 4 heads and then 00:01:56.44\00:02:01.25 he sees in verse 7, a fourth beast, which is not like 00:02:01.28\00:02:05.62 any of the others, it is not like anything in the animal 00:02:05.65\00:02:09.89 kingdom, he says it is dreadful and terrible, exceedingly 00:02:09.92\00:02:14.73 strong, with huge iron teeth and it was different from 00:02:14.76\00:02:19.60 all the other beasts. 00:02:19.63\00:02:21.37 So these are the four creatures that he sees. 00:02:21.40\00:02:25.14 They represent 4 kingdoms that move through 00:02:25.17\00:02:28.88 history in succession. 00:02:28.91\00:02:30.75 The lion represents Babylon. 00:02:30.78\00:02:32.61 The bear, Media Persia. 00:02:32.65\00:02:35.02 The leopard, the kingdom of Grecia. 00:02:35.05\00:02:37.35 And then the terrible dreadful beast, the non-descript 00:02:37.39\00:02:41.69 beast represents the Roman empire. 00:02:41.72\00:02:45.16 So that is the basic outline of the symbols that he sees 00:02:45.19\00:02:48.63 in his vision, and the beast and what they represent. 00:02:48.66\00:02:52.17 We know this Ty because in a very context of the prophecy 00:02:52.20\00:02:55.70 an interpretation is given Daniel. 00:02:55.74\00:02:58.07 In verse 16, Daniel comes near to one of the people 00:02:58.11\00:03:02.64 he sees in vision and he asks him about this vision. 00:03:02.68\00:03:06.82 This being, this heavenly being tells Daniel the truth, 00:03:06.85\00:03:10.99 and the interpretation of these things. 00:03:11.02\00:03:12.82 Then in verse 17 he says, these great beasts, this is the 00:03:12.85\00:03:16.32 Angel, the messenger, speaking to Daniel, to tell him the 00:03:16.36\00:03:19.76 truth of the interpretation of these things. 00:03:19.79\00:03:21.43 He says these great beasts, which are 4, are 4 kings 00:03:21.46\00:03:25.97 which shall arise out of the earth. 00:03:26.00\00:03:28.87 So right there you have a very clear interpretation. 00:03:28.90\00:03:32.24 These beasts actually represent Kings and kingdoms. 00:03:32.27\00:03:35.31 In fact, the Bible here, even though it is talking and 00:03:35.38\00:03:38.05 symbolic language, it is talking the same language that 00:03:38.08\00:03:40.68 we use today, in our world. 00:03:40.75\00:03:42.18 For example, we use beasts to represent countries, 00:03:42.25\00:03:45.62 or kingdoms, or Kings. 00:03:45.65\00:03:47.02 If you think for example, of an eagle. 00:03:47.06\00:03:49.49 What country do you think of? America of course. 00:03:49.52\00:03:51.43 If you think of a bear? Russia! 00:03:51.46\00:03:53.06 The lion? England! 00:03:53.09\00:03:55.30 The Dragon? China! 00:03:55.33\00:03:57.47 So God is using the very language that He saw we would 00:03:57.50\00:04:00.34 use as a people, He is not trying to confuse us here. 00:04:00.37\00:04:03.10 But He is talking in symbols for reason. 00:04:03.14\00:04:06.01 That reason is going to become evident later. 00:04:06.04\00:04:08.44 Right now the main thing we need to recognize, for our 00:04:08.51\00:04:11.11 viewers sake, is that these 4 beasts are kingdoms that have 00:04:11.15\00:04:14.72 risen in the earth and take us down the stream of time. 00:04:14.75\00:04:18.29 It is fascinating to notice that all of these kingdoms 00:04:18.32\00:04:21.66 are represented by 00:04:21.69\00:04:23.53 predatory beasts. 00:04:23.56\00:04:25.36 These are powerful animals 00:04:25.39\00:04:28.30 that are symbolizing powers 00:04:28.33\00:04:30.97 in human history that used 00:04:31.00\00:04:33.30 force, that used coercion, 00:04:33.34\00:04:35.57 that depend on military power and might in order to advance 00:04:35.60\00:04:40.14 themselves, by contrast, just for interest sake if we fast 00:04:40.18\00:04:44.48 forward to God's kingdom as it is represented in Scripture, 00:04:44.51\00:04:48.75 we discover that God chooses for His symbol, a lamb. 00:04:48.78\00:04:52.89 A lamb represents the kingdom of God. 00:04:52.92\00:04:56.66 A docile, meek and humble animal that is led to the 00:04:56.69\00:05:00.46 slaughter, God does not use the same principles 00:05:00.50\00:05:04.17 that human powers use. 00:05:04.20\00:05:06.90 God is not engaged in force and manipulation in order to 00:05:06.94\00:05:11.91 bring people to their knees and worship before Him. 00:05:11.97\00:05:14.68 But we see in the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ. 00:05:14.71\00:05:18.21 We see in the cross of Christ, we see the power that God 00:05:18.28\00:05:22.18 depends on and that is the power of truth and love. 00:05:22.22\00:05:25.62 That is a really good point Ty, in fact it is so powerful 00:05:25.65\00:05:28.72 when you look at that because the Lamb, of course being the 00:05:28.76\00:05:31.79 sacrificial beast of the Old 00:05:31.83\00:05:33.16 Testament, the sanctuary 00:05:33.19\00:05:34.76 service, and Jesus Christ 00:05:34.83\00:05:36.40 being typified by the Lamb, 00:05:36.43\00:05:37.90 the Lamb of God takes away 00:05:37.93\00:05:39.27 the sins of the world. 00:05:39.30\00:05:40.64 Yet, there is more power in that animal, or in the meaning 00:05:40.67\00:05:46.07 behind that, the principle of self-sacrifice, the principal 00:05:46.14\00:05:50.68 of love is more powerful than all the power combined in 00:05:50.71\00:05:55.22 all of these beasts. 00:05:55.25\00:05:56.58 How powerful? Jesus says, "and I, if I be lifted up," 00:05:56.62\00:05:59.79 from the earth, from the cross, "will draw all to me. " 00:05:59.82\00:06:03.19 In other words the power of the cross, the power that is 00:06:03.22\00:06:07.13 embodied in the symbol of the Lamb is the power of God's 00:06:07.20\00:06:11.50 love to draw sinners to Himself without the use of force 00:06:11.53\00:06:15.84 and coercion. 00:06:15.87\00:06:17.61 It is a powerful thing to realize James, the Bible 00:06:17.64\00:06:20.14 throughout is communicating to us the awesome fact that 00:06:20.18\00:06:25.11 God does seek our salvation and our worship, but only on 00:06:25.15\00:06:30.09 the premise of a returning current of love to Him 00:06:30.12\00:06:33.15 because of the great love He has had for us. 00:06:33.19\00:06:35.39 You can see that this Chapter, Chapter 7 is in a very 00:06:35.42\00:06:40.13 real sense a parallel of Daniel Chapter 2. 00:06:40.20\00:06:43.03 There you had 4 parts of an image representing 00:06:43.10\00:06:45.90 different kingdoms, and it came down to the feet and 00:06:45.97\00:06:49.44 that feet divided into 10 parts. 00:06:49.47\00:06:50.91 Here you have 10 horns on this last beast, and those 10 00:06:50.94\00:06:54.38 horns would be parallel with those 10 toes in that image. 00:06:54.41\00:06:57.85 Then, like in the image, you have this rock, 00:06:57.88\00:07:00.62 this stone, that came and smote the image. 00:07:00.65\00:07:03.65 That hit the image at the feet. 00:07:03.72\00:07:05.05 Same here you have this vision continuing on until the 00:07:05.09\00:07:08.82 judgment and the return of Jesus Christ. 00:07:08.86\00:07:11.83 Until there is a judgment that takes place and the beast 00:07:11.86\00:07:15.10 is given to the burning flames. 00:07:15.13\00:07:17.40 You have some parallels here between these two prophecies. 00:07:17.47\00:07:20.44 That is powerful, so we have this succession of kingdoms. 00:07:20.47\00:07:23.87 We have 4 kingdoms that are mentioned and then Daniel 00:07:23.91\00:07:27.54 in verse 8 sees something that is very interesting and a 00:07:27.58\00:07:31.15 turn of events occurs with the fourth beast. 00:07:31.18\00:07:33.45 The 4th beast we have identified as the Roman empire in it's 00:07:33.52\00:07:39.29 secular form, in it's pagan form 00:07:39.32\00:07:42.12 Then he says that he sees a little horn come up out 00:07:42.16\00:07:48.00 of that fourth beast. 00:07:48.03\00:07:50.77 That little horn power is then the focus of the remainder 00:07:50.80\00:07:55.04 of Daniel Chapter 7 and there are specific characteristics 00:07:55.07\00:07:59.31 that identify it so that we know who this power is. 00:07:59.34\00:08:02.08 First of all we just need to realize that if you look at 00:08:02.11\00:08:05.28 the history books, it is obvious that there is only one 00:08:05.31\00:08:08.72 power that grew out of, and was the continuation of the 00:08:08.78\00:08:12.49 pagan Roman Empire and that was the papal Roman empire. 00:08:12.52\00:08:16.22 That is why there's only four beasts represented. 00:08:16.26\00:08:20.20 In fact the papal Roman empire was a Christianized 00:08:20.23\00:08:24.10 continuation of the pagan Roman empire. 00:08:24.13\00:08:28.00 The characteristics that are outlined are very fascinating. 00:08:28.04\00:08:31.31 They are, in fact we see this in relation to the first 00:08:31.34\00:08:35.01 verse, verse 8. 00:08:35.04\00:08:36.38 It plucked up three by the roots, it had the eyes 00:08:36.41\00:08:40.02 of a man, it came up among them. 00:08:40.05\00:08:41.78 That gives us a location and a little bit of the history 00:08:41.82\00:08:45.89 of the rise of this power. 00:08:45.95\00:08:47.72 It continues on until the judgment and that tells us that 00:08:47.76\00:08:50.86 this power that will come out of pagan Rome, will continue 00:08:50.89\00:08:54.00 on to the second coming of Jesus Christ. 00:08:54.00\00:08:55.86 So it has to be present day power. 00:08:55.93\00:08:57.63 Daniel, as he goes through the first part of this vision, 00:08:57.67\00:09:01.87 he is asking, verse 15, he's troubled and doesn't 00:09:01.90\00:09:06.01 understand the visions. 00:09:06.04\00:09:07.38 An angel comes near, a messenger comes near and Daniel wants 00:09:07.41\00:09:12.01 to know more about the interpretation but notice 00:09:12.05\00:09:15.55 what he says in verse 19. 00:09:15.58\00:09:16.92 He says, "then I would know" 00:09:16.95\00:09:18.55 "the truth of the fourth beast," 00:09:18.59\00:09:20.19 "which was different from" 00:09:20.22\00:09:22.06 "all the others, exceeding" 00:09:22.09\00:09:23.86 "dreadful, whose teeth were of iron, and his nails of brass:" 00:09:23.89\00:09:26.43 "which devoured, brake in pieces and stamp the residue with" 00:09:26.46\00:09:29.46 "his feet; and of the 10 horns that were in his head, and of" 00:09:29.50\00:09:32.50 "the other which came up, before whom three fell" 00:09:32.53\00:09:35.77 "even of that whole horn that had eyes," 00:09:35.80\00:09:38.11 "and a mouth that spake great things," 00:09:38.17\00:09:40.91 "whose look was more stout than his fellows. " 00:09:40.94\00:09:42.54 Daniel here is asking for more information, specifically 00:09:42.58\00:09:45.71 about the little horn, about the fourth beast. 00:09:45.75\00:09:47.78 That seems to be what the rest of Daniel 7 focuses in on. 00:09:47.82\00:09:51.42 There is another characteristic 00:09:51.45\00:09:53.66 of this power is 00:09:53.69\00:09:55.02 brought to view in verse 8 00:09:55.06\00:09:58.03 and also down in verses 20-22. 00:09:58.06\00:10:01.50 You have the fact that this power will speak, in my 00:10:01.53\00:10:05.13 version it says, "pompous words against the most high," 00:10:05.17\00:10:08.74 this is the New King James version. 00:10:08.77\00:10:10.47 The King James Version renders that characteristic will 00:10:10.51\00:10:14.38 "speak great words against the most high". 00:10:14.41\00:10:17.18 Another translation would indicate that this is "defaming" 00:10:17.21\00:10:23.02 "words against the most high. " 00:10:23.05\00:10:24.65 If you go and compare Revelation Chapter 13, another word is used 00:10:24.69\00:10:28.72 to fill out the meaning here and that is that this power 00:10:28.76\00:10:31.36 would speak " blasphemous words against the most high. " 00:10:31.39\00:10:34.66 All of these translations indicates simply that the 00:10:34.73\00:10:38.77 little horn power will focus its attention on defaming 00:10:38.80\00:10:42.90 the character of God, will focus it's attention on assuming 00:10:42.94\00:10:47.61 divine prerogatives and power, and will set itself up in 00:10:47.64\00:10:52.75 a capacity that brings blasphemy upon the character of God. 00:10:52.78\00:10:57.85 So this is another one of the characteristics. 00:10:57.89\00:10:59.32 Notice in verse 21 that it says that this, "Daniel beheld," 00:10:59.35\00:11:03.29 "and the little horn made war with the Saints," 00:11:03.32\00:11:06.46 "and prevailed against them;" 00:11:06.49\00:11:08.80 so it is a persecuting power. 00:11:08.83\00:11:11.13 Then it says in verse 22 this will continue on "until the" 00:11:11.17\00:11:15.77 "Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the" 00:11:15.80\00:11:20.18 "Saints of the most high; and the time came that the Saints" 00:11:20.21\00:11:22.91 "possess the kingdom. " 00:11:22.94\00:11:24.28 This is really interesting, I read also in the New King 00:11:24.31\00:11:27.48 James and it says, "judgment was made in favor of the" 00:11:27.52\00:11:30.82 "Saints and the most high. " 00:11:30.85\00:11:32.72 So you have a power that is warring against God's people, 00:11:32.75\00:11:36.12 the Saints, as they are identified here. 00:11:36.19\00:11:38.79 That is warring and persecuting people, a power that is assuming 00:11:38.83\00:11:42.40 the prerogatives of God, is speaking words that are 00:11:42.43\00:11:45.73 defaming God, defaming His character, or misrepresenting 00:11:45.77\00:11:49.70 God, and a power that is identified as coming out of 00:11:49.74\00:11:53.61 the pagan Roman power. 00:11:53.64\00:11:55.14 Yes, and then there is another characteristic that we 00:11:55.18\00:11:57.85 must mention James, and that is in verse 25. 00:11:57.88\00:12:00.85 That the little horn power will be a power that seeks, 00:12:00.88\00:12:06.76 or intends, or thinks to change times and laws. 00:12:06.79\00:12:13.40 Now this is fascinating because the context of verse 25 00:12:13.43\00:12:17.27 Isn't just that this power will think to change times and 00:12:17.30\00:12:21.14 laws as in any times and law. 00:12:21.17\00:12:23.17 It says he shall speak pompous words against the most high, 00:12:23.20\00:12:26.47 persecute the Saints and intend to change times and laws. 00:12:26.51\00:12:29.41 The indication here, grammatically and in the context 00:12:29.44\00:12:33.58 is that we can expect this power to attempt to change 00:12:33.62\00:12:37.72 the times and laws of the most high. 00:12:37.75\00:12:40.56 This power is tampering with the law of God. 00:12:40.59\00:12:44.86 This is so profound because as you look at the context 00:12:44.89\00:12:48.63 of the book of Daniel, the theme that you find in the 00:12:48.66\00:12:52.40 book of Daniel is the New Covenant theme. 00:12:52.43\00:12:54.24 It is the theme of the 00:12:54.27\00:12:55.60 everlasting covenant. 00:12:55.64\00:12:56.97 This theme is vital for God's 00:12:57.01\00:12:59.47 people to understand 00:12:59.51\00:13:00.91 especially in the end of time. 00:13:00.94\00:13:02.28 It is vital for us to recognize 00:13:02.31\00:13:03.68 what the New Covenant is so 00:13:03.71\00:13:05.15 that we can enter into that 00:13:05.18\00:13:06.55 New Covenant, that everlasting covenant with God. 00:13:06.58\00:13:08.78 One of the main themes that has been developed so far, 00:13:08.82\00:13:11.55 in the book of Daniel, its relationship. 00:13:11.59\00:13:13.72 We are going to look at this further, but God has designed 00:13:13.76\00:13:18.83 from the beginning that we would have an intimate 00:13:18.89\00:13:20.66 relationship with Him. 00:13:20.70\00:13:22.13 When He created us, He came to us every day at the cool 00:13:22.16\00:13:25.93 of the day and He met with us. 00:13:26.00\00:13:27.60 He walked with us and He talked with us. 00:13:27.64\00:13:29.64 Even when we sin, even when we turned away from Him, 00:13:29.67\00:13:32.44 even when we were hiding from God in that garden, 00:13:32.51\00:13:35.21 even as we turned from Him, He still came seeking after us. 00:13:35.24\00:13:39.35 Now the first six chapters of Daniel are intimately 00:13:39.38\00:13:43.15 directing us to that relationship experience. 00:13:43.18\00:13:46.25 Time and time again you see relationship, relationship 00:13:46.29\00:13:49.09 faith in God, understanding God, being drawn to God. 00:13:49.12\00:13:51.86 You see Nebuchadnezzar being drawn to God. 00:13:51.89\00:13:53.40 You see Darius being drawn to God. 00:13:53.43\00:13:54.73 Daniel relying on God and Daniel's friends relying on God. 00:13:54.76\00:13:57.70 So the very first half of this book has been developing 00:13:57.77\00:14:01.00 this New Covenant, everlasting gospel theme. 00:14:01.04\00:14:03.37 So as we've gone through Chapter 7 so far we have 00:14:03.41\00:14:07.28 identified the basic symbols, we see the basic powers 00:14:07.34\00:14:10.38 that are identified through the beast and focusing 00:14:10.41\00:14:13.45 in on the little horn. 00:14:13.48\00:14:14.82 Now we are seeing that there is a New Covenant theme in 00:14:14.85\00:14:18.42 the book of Daniel that comes to development here in 00:14:18.45\00:14:22.09 Chapter 7 as this power seeks to defaming God's character, 00:14:22.12\00:14:26.06 to break relationships with God, between Him and His 00:14:26.09\00:14:29.23 people, through persecuting them and blaspheming His 00:14:29.26\00:14:32.33 character, and changing God's law, which is at the heart 00:14:32.37\00:14:35.40 of the New Covenant. 00:14:35.47\00:14:36.81 Friends as we come back after the break, we are going to 00:14:36.84\00:14:39.41 explore in greater details the various features of the 00:14:39.44\00:14:42.84 New Covenant and how it is that God intends to lead us 00:14:42.88\00:14:46.25 into a relationship with Himself through that New Covenant. 00:14:46.28\00:14:49.35 So stay with us because we'll be right back! 00:14:49.38\00:14:50.85
