Welcome back to our study of Daniel Chapter 6. 00:00:01.33\00:00:02.93 James we are discovering some incredible things here. 00:00:02.96\00:00:05.27 I want to point out that it 00:00:05.30\00:00:06.84 is a common misconception that righteousness by faith or 00:00:06.90\00:00:11.47 salvation by grace through faith is a New Testament truth, 00:00:11.51\00:00:16.08 and that it is not in the Old Testament. 00:00:16.11\00:00:18.28 Those people back in the Old Testament they were saved by 00:00:18.31\00:00:20.68 keeping the law and there wasn't the faith factor for 00:00:20.72\00:00:23.95 salvation and deliverance in the Old Testament that we 00:00:23.99\00:00:27.19 have in the New Testament. 00:00:27.22\00:00:28.56 But here we see both in King Darius as well as in Daniel, 00:00:28.59\00:00:32.56 we see a beautiful exemplification of justification 00:00:32.59\00:00:38.20 by faith, righteousness by faith, 00:00:38.23\00:00:40.00 salvation by grace through faith. 00:00:40.07\00:00:41.74 First of all, in the King, he says, to Daniel, as he 00:00:41.80\00:00:45.81 realizes that this law has gone forth and it can't be 00:00:45.84\00:00:49.84 changed because the law of the Medes and the Persians 00:00:49.88\00:00:52.78 is a law that is irrevocable and cannot be changed. 00:00:52.81\00:00:56.85 He says to Daniel, in verse 16, "your God", Daniel, 00:00:56.89\00:01:01.26 "whom you serve continually, He will deliver you. " 00:01:01.29\00:01:05.53 There is a confidence there in King Darius. 00:01:05.59\00:01:08.93 He knows something of Daniel's God. 00:01:08.96\00:01:11.43 Yes the principles that you are talking about are all 00:01:12.97\00:01:15.30 the way through this Chapter. 00:01:15.34\00:01:16.67 You see faith being 00:01:16.71\00:01:18.07 manifested by not only the 00:01:18.14\00:01:20.04 King but Daniel. 00:01:20.11\00:01:21.44 For example in the context of the decree being written, 00:01:21.48\00:01:24.81 Daniel, by faith, goes to his room, the windows are open 00:01:24.88\00:01:28.45 and he is praying towards Jerusalem. 00:01:28.48\00:01:29.82 While he has faith and confidence in God he is taking 00:01:29.85\00:01:32.95 action, he is doing something. 00:01:32.99\00:01:34.49 He is working in harmony with that faith. 00:01:34.52\00:01:37.16 Yes and you see faith and works mingled also in the King. 00:01:37.19\00:01:41.66 While he says in verse 16, "your God whom you serve 00:01:41.70\00:01:47.04 continually, He will deliver you. " 00:01:47.07\00:01:49.14 That is a very strong manifestation of confidence and 00:01:49.17\00:01:52.04 faith in Daniel's God. 00:01:52.07\00:01:53.54 But then it says in verse 18 that the King engages, through 00:01:53.58\00:01:59.85 the night, in fasting and he is obviously troubled. 00:01:59.91\00:02:04.02 It says "his sleep went from him. " 00:02:04.05\00:02:05.99 So he is a little stressed out about this. 00:02:06.02\00:02:07.96 He likes Daniel and doesn't want to see Daniel be thrown 00:02:07.99\00:02:10.49 into the lion's den and be executed. 00:02:10.53\00:02:12.76 And yet he is confident. 00:02:12.79\00:02:16.06 We know that he is expecting Daniel to be delivered, 00:02:16.10\00:02:19.97 because he doesn't just say this whole thing is a 00:02:20.00\00:02:23.81 disaster, he goes to sleep, no he doesn't just go to sleep 00:02:23.84\00:02:28.61 but he is praying about it maybe? 00:02:28.64\00:02:30.95 It doesn't say that he is praying about it, but he has 00:02:30.98\00:02:33.21 learned something from Daniel. 00:02:33.25\00:02:34.58 He is at least fasting and immediately when morning comes 00:02:34.62\00:02:38.25 he rushes, the Scripture says, he went early, he arose 00:02:38.29\00:02:42.46 early in the morning and "went in haste to the lions den. " 00:02:42.49\00:02:47.30 "He spoke into the lions den with a lamenting voice. " 00:02:47.36\00:02:52.13 "And he says, Daniel, servant of the living God," 00:02:52.17\00:02:56.64 verse 20, "has your God, whom you serve continually," 00:02:56.67\00:03:01.21 "been able to deliver you from the lions?" 00:03:01.24\00:03:04.75 So that is a question. 00:03:04.78\00:03:06.11 Who is he talking to and why is he even saying that 00:03:06.15\00:03:07.48 if Daniel is dead? 00:03:07.52\00:03:08.85 Obviously this is works, working with his faith. 00:03:08.88\00:03:12.45 If he doesn't have works he doesn't go to lions den. 00:03:12.49\00:03:15.56 If he doesn't have works he doesn't talk because he's 00:03:15.62\00:03:18.09 be talking to nobody, he'd be talking to dead bones, 00:03:18.13\00:03:20.60 he would be talking to a skeleton. 00:03:20.63\00:03:21.96 So he has works, but these works are not the reason 00:03:22.00\00:03:24.33 why Daniel is saved. 00:03:24.37\00:03:26.20 Daniel isn't saved because he has been fasting through 00:03:26.23\00:03:28.44 the night, Daniel isn't saved from the lions because 00:03:28.47\00:03:30.97 he goes to the lions den the next morning and opens, 00:03:31.01\00:03:33.48 or rolls away the stone and talks to him. 00:03:33.51\00:03:35.41 Daniel is saved by faith in God. 00:03:35.44\00:03:38.15 God is the only One who can save Daniel. 00:03:38.18\00:03:40.18 God is the only one who can save us. 00:03:40.25\00:03:42.35 We are saved by grace through faith, 00:03:42.42\00:03:44.45 but it is the gift of God, it is not of works 00:03:44.52\00:03:46.82 lest any man should boast. 00:03:46.89\00:03:48.22 But we are his workmanship, Ephesians 2:8-10 says, 00:03:48.26\00:03:51.26 "created in Christ Jesus unto good works. " 00:03:51.29\00:03:54.46 Obviously the faith of Daniel, and the faith of Darius, 00:03:54.50\00:03:57.30 have led them to good works, to corresponding works. 00:03:57.33\00:04:00.14 The king had to be extremely gratified James, when he heard 00:04:00.17\00:04:03.77 the voice of Daniel speaking back, "O king live for ever," 00:04:03.81\00:04:07.41 verse 22, "my God sent his angel and shut the lions" 00:04:07.44\00:04:12.05 "mouth so they have not hurt me because I was found" 00:04:12.08\00:04:16.28 "innocent before him and also O King, I have done" 00:04:16.32\00:04:20.52 "no wrong before you. " 00:04:20.56\00:04:22.66 He had a conscience void of offense. 00:04:22.72\00:04:24.83 He has walked in integrity. 00:04:24.86\00:04:26.19 He knows that God is going to deliver him. 00:04:26.23\00:04:29.70 I think Daniel was confident from the very beginning 00:04:29.73\00:04:33.10 of this whole situation, he knew that God would be 00:04:33.13\00:04:36.47 faithful and deliver him. 00:04:36.50\00:04:37.84 It even says down in verse 23, "no injury was upon him. " 00:04:37.87\00:04:44.48 And I love these words James, 00:04:44.51\00:04:46.18 "because he believed in his God. " 00:04:46.25\00:04:51.12 Righteousness by faith, salvation deliverance by virtue 00:04:51.15\00:04:54.86 a faith in God's goodness and power to deliver. 00:04:54.89\00:04:58.13 Not by virtue in any confidence that 00:04:58.16\00:05:00.46 Daniel had in himself. 00:05:00.50\00:05:01.80 There is so many parallels here to the plan of salvation. 00:05:01.83\00:05:04.43 So many glimpses into the heart of God. 00:05:04.47\00:05:07.17 For example, in verse 23 it said, "then was the King" 00:05:07.20\00:05:10.21 "exceedingly glad for him. " 00:05:10.27\00:05:11.67 We are delivered from a lion, when we choose salvation, 00:05:11.71\00:05:14.91 when we chose to have faith in God there is joy in heaven 00:05:14.94\00:05:18.11 over one sinner there is joy in heaven. 00:05:18.15\00:05:20.32 Darius is a type of God in this sense that he is 00:05:20.35\00:05:23.42 exceedingly glad when Daniel exercises his faith 00:05:23.45\00:05:26.45 and finds salvation in his God. 00:05:26.49\00:05:28.52 God is exceedingly glad when we exercise faith and find 00:05:28.56\00:05:32.16 salvation in Him. 00:05:32.19\00:05:33.60 Also it says that his sleep went from him. 00:05:33.63\00:05:35.50 When we look at the big picture of the character of God, 00:05:35.53\00:05:38.77 the Bible teaches us that God doesn't slumber or sleep. 00:05:38.80\00:05:42.14 He is interested in us and working in our behalf 24/7, 00:05:42.17\00:05:45.81 365 a year, He is continually working in our behalf. 00:05:45.84\00:05:49.51 He fasted, Jesus said I will not drink of the fruit of 00:05:49.54\00:05:53.21 this vine, grape, until I drink it anew with you 00:05:53.25\00:05:56.69 in My kingdom. 00:05:56.75\00:05:58.09 We have these types of Christ, these types of God that are 00:05:58.12\00:06:00.46 seen in the attitude, in the heart, in the spirit of 00:06:00.49\00:06:04.49 Darius towards Daniel. 00:06:04.53\00:06:05.86 There are other parallels as well on the negative side 00:06:05.89\00:06:08.30 of this story. 00:06:08.33\00:06:09.66 Those who enter into this betrayal of Daniel and seek to 00:06:09.70\00:06:15.60 pressure and trick the King into executing Daniel, 00:06:15.64\00:06:20.48 we can see characteristics here of the enemy of our souls 00:06:20.51\00:06:25.11 and how he works to entrap us into thinking that would 00:06:25.15\00:06:29.58 drive us away from God. 00:06:29.62\00:06:30.95 For example James, what about the idea here that the law 00:06:30.99\00:06:35.06 of the Medes and the Persians is unchangeable. 00:06:35.09\00:06:38.53 God's laws are unchangeable, God's laws cannot be set 00:06:38.59\00:06:43.20 aside and yet God's mercy triumphs over justice because 00:06:43.23\00:06:47.80 where sin abounds grace much more abounds. 00:06:47.87\00:06:50.31 The devil continually is trying to drive us away from 00:06:50.37\00:06:54.54 the Savior, away from salvation by pressing upon us our 00:06:54.58\00:06:58.18 guilt and a sense of condemnation and separation from 00:06:58.25\00:07:02.42 God by trying to get us to believe our sin is so great 00:07:02.45\00:07:06.55 that even God, by His grace can't save us. 00:07:06.59\00:07:09.09 In fact, God's law is unchangeable and justice must 00:07:09.12\00:07:11.73 be executed and there is no forgiveness with God. 00:07:11.76\00:07:15.83 Yet Darius reveals that yes the law can't be changed 00:07:15.86\00:07:20.10 but at the same time there is mercy in the heart of God. 00:07:20.14\00:07:23.74 Daniel is saved by virtue of God's mercy, not because 00:07:23.77\00:07:27.34 Daniel is righteous in and of himself. 00:07:27.38\00:07:29.84 I really like that because when you look at the context 00:07:29.88\00:07:32.28 of this story in light of the plan of salvation, 00:07:32.31\00:07:35.45 you find here in verse 14 that when the king realized 00:07:35.48\00:07:40.02 what he had done, "he was sore displeased with himself. " 00:07:40.06\00:07:44.39 In the big picture of the great controversy, God recognizes 00:07:44.43\00:07:47.96 what we have done and He takes responsibility for our 00:07:47.96\00:07:52.23 sin, He takes upon Himself the consequences of our 00:07:52.27\00:07:56.40 iniquity and allows us to experience the mercy rather 00:07:56.44\00:08:00.61 than the justice of the sentence. 00:08:00.64\00:08:02.78 So what we see in God is, we see this blending of 00:08:02.84\00:08:05.58 mercy and justice. 00:08:05.65\00:08:06.98 He doesn't do away with His law, the law is the very 00:08:07.02\00:08:09.68 essence and foundation of who He is. 00:08:09.72\00:08:11.15 God is love, Jesus said the greatest Commandment is to love 00:08:11.19\00:08:13.42 God and the second is to love your neighbor as yourself. 00:08:13.46\00:08:16.62 So the government of God needs this stability of law, 00:08:16.66\00:08:20.33 but it must have mercy in the context of the fact that we 00:08:20.36\00:08:23.53 are sinners and there is only one way we can be saved. 00:08:23.57\00:08:26.74 That is by the grace and mercy of God. 00:08:26.77\00:08:28.24 King David gives us a beautiful insight to this balance 00:08:28.30\00:08:32.27 between justice and mercy 00:08:32.34\00:08:34.11 when he looks forward to 00:08:34.14\00:08:36.11 prophecy to the cross and he 00:08:36.14\00:08:39.55 says that mercy and truth kissed 00:08:39.61\00:08:42.95 each other at the cross of Calvary. 00:08:42.98\00:08:45.19 When we look at what happened to the Lord Jesus Christ 00:08:45.22\00:08:49.42 in those final hours of His life, what we see is the 00:08:49.46\00:08:53.66 heart of God manifested. 00:08:53.70\00:08:55.00 We seek God eager to save, to deliver. 00:08:55.03\00:08:58.27 We see God exercising mercy and grace and at the same 00:08:58.30\00:09:01.64 time we see that Jesus, is in fact, 00:09:01.67\00:09:05.24 bearing our sin and dying. 00:09:05.27\00:09:06.74 If the law of God could have been changed, the cross would 00:09:06.78\00:09:11.05 have been completely unnecessary. 00:09:11.08\00:09:12.71 God would have just changed His law to accommodate 00:09:12.75\00:09:15.55 fallen man in his sin. 00:09:15.58\00:09:17.45 The fact is that God's law is the foundation of His 00:09:17.49\00:09:20.66 Government and really a transcript of His character. 00:09:20.69\00:09:24.96 It is the essence of what love is, God's law is. 00:09:24.99\00:09:28.86 So God's law can't be laid aside anymore then God's 00:09:28.90\00:09:31.93 character can be changed, anymore than God's love 00:09:31.97\00:09:34.94 can be laid aside. 00:09:35.00\00:09:36.84 He maintains the integrity of His law and the cross 00:09:36.87\00:09:39.94 proves that the law of God is immutable and yet that 00:09:39.97\00:09:43.45 the mercy of God is able to save in spite of our sin. 00:09:43.48\00:09:46.88 And yet we see this in the story to, we see an 00:09:46.92\00:09:48.88 unchangeable law and unchangeable principle, 00:09:48.92\00:09:50.85 and yet we see salvation for Daniel. 00:09:50.89\00:09:53.15 We also see the justice. 00:09:53.19\00:09:54.79 We see here as we read in 00:09:54.82\00:09:56.73 verses 24 and 25, it says 00:09:56.79\00:09:58.63 here, "and the King commanded," 00:09:58.66\00:10:00.00 "and they brought those men" 00:10:00.03\00:10:01.33 "which had accused Daniel and a cast of them into the" 00:10:01.36\00:10:03.70 "den of lions, them, their children, and their wives;" 00:10:03.73\00:10:06.30 "and the lions had the mastery of them, and brake" 00:10:06.33\00:10:08.90 "all their bones in pieces ever they came" 00:10:08.94\00:10:10.87 "at the bottom of the den. " 00:10:10.91\00:10:12.24 And what you find here is you find justice. 00:10:12.27\00:10:14.41 The reason why the king is so severe with these men is 00:10:14.44\00:10:17.31 because they have lied over and over again to the king. 00:10:17.35\00:10:20.18 They lied in verse 7, "all the presidents came together", and 00:10:20.22\00:10:22.35 all the presidents hadn't come together. 00:10:22.38\00:10:23.85 They lied in verse 13, "they answered and said before" 00:10:23.89\00:10:26.69 "the king that Daniel, which is of the children of the" 00:10:26.72\00:10:29.49 "captivity of Judah, doesn't regard thee O King. " 00:10:29.52\00:10:32.06 Daniel did regard the king. 00:10:32.09\00:10:34.03 He was the only one that was regarding the king. 00:10:34.10\00:10:36.30 He was the only one that was faithful to the king and so 00:10:36.33\00:10:38.73 the king realizes, when this whole story unfolds, 00:10:38.77\00:10:41.24 he realizes these men have deceived him, they have lied 00:10:41.27\00:10:44.27 to him, and they are the ones that should reap the 00:10:44.31\00:10:46.88 consequences of their own actions. 00:10:46.91\00:10:48.74 The Bible in Revelation says that those who are in the 00:10:48.78\00:10:51.85 lake of fire, those who are lost in the end. 00:10:51.88\00:10:53.42 Those who receive the justice and the consequences of 00:10:53.45\00:10:56.25 their actions are inclusive and those people are liars. 00:10:56.28\00:10:59.82 What God is seeking to reveal to us in this context is 00:10:59.85\00:11:04.49 don't connect with and become one with the sinful wicked 00:11:04.53\00:11:09.06 lying element in your nature and the nature 00:11:09.10\00:11:12.20 of those around you. 00:11:12.23\00:11:13.57 They, their wives, their children, if we become 00:11:13.60\00:11:15.54 children of the devil, if we are married to the devil, 00:11:15.57\00:11:18.07 if we are connected with the devil because the place of 00:11:18.11\00:11:21.11 torment, place of hell and punishment, the place of 00:11:21.14\00:11:23.81 annihilation has been reserved for the devil and 00:11:23.88\00:11:26.51 his angels, not for any human being. 00:11:26.55\00:11:28.82 If we refuse the mercy and love of God. 00:11:28.85\00:11:31.05 If we refuse to connect with God and forsake all of our 00:11:31.12\00:11:34.69 sins and give them to Jesus, then we will be included 00:11:34.76\00:11:38.29 with the devil in that judgment. 00:11:38.36\00:11:41.13 Those who betrayed the king and Daniel weren't anymore 00:11:41.16\00:11:46.07 sinners than Daniel himself, or the king, 00:11:46.10\00:11:49.27 or Nebuchadnezzar. 00:11:49.30\00:11:50.64 They had the opportunity for salvation as well as 00:11:50.67\00:11:54.98 every other sinner, but they did not avail themselves 00:11:55.01\00:11:59.45 of the grace of God. 00:11:59.48\00:12:01.65 They were not perceiving, they were not receiving, 00:12:01.68\00:12:04.92 and they were not accepting the grace of God by which 00:12:04.95\00:12:08.12 they themselves could have been delivered. 00:12:08.16\00:12:10.26 As Chapter 6 of Daniel comes to a conclusion James, 00:12:10.29\00:12:14.36 we have something similar to what we find with 00:12:14.40\00:12:17.43 Nebuchadnezzar and that is that Darius begins to bear 00:12:17.50\00:12:20.84 testimony and he sends out a memo, a letter to every nation 00:12:20.87\00:12:27.44 and people group, and language group on the earth and 00:12:27.48\00:12:30.38 he says, like Nebuchadnezzar before him, peace be 00:12:30.41\00:12:33.31 multiplied to you and then he begins to extol 00:12:33.35\00:12:36.22 the God of heaven. 00:12:36.25\00:12:37.99 You know what he is wanting to do here? 00:12:38.02\00:12:39.62 He is wanting to do what we were just talking about. 00:12:39.69\00:12:42.19 He is wanting people to make a decision for God. 00:12:42.22\00:12:44.66 He doesn't want them to end up like his wise men ended up. 00:12:44.69\00:12:47.13 I want you to know about this God and take a stand 00:12:47.20\00:12:49.80 for this God because He is the God of gods. 00:12:49.83\00:12:52.30 He is the King of kings. 00:12:52.33\00:12:53.67 He is the living God, Darius proclaims. 00:12:53.70\00:12:56.54 He is steadfast for ever. 00:12:56.57\00:12:58.57 He says that his kingdom is a kingdom that will endure 00:12:58.61\00:13:03.01 forever and he says that He is a God who delivers and 00:13:03.04\00:13:06.92 He is eager to deliver every one of us dear friends. 00:13:06.95\00:13:10.85 Turn to Him and you also, like Daniel, will be saved. 00:13:10.89\00:13:14.72
