Hello friends! 00:00:20.78\00:00:22.62 Welcome to Books of the Book. 00:00:22.65\00:00:24.52 We are presently engaged in an 00:00:24.55\00:00:26.29 exciting study of the book of 00:00:26.32\00:00:28.26 Daniel and my name is Ty Gibson. 00:00:28.29\00:00:30.13 And I'm James Rafferty and right now we are transitioning 00:00:30.16\00:00:33.03 to a different power in Daniel 00:00:33.06\00:00:35.93 Chapter 6 and we are 00:00:35.96\00:00:37.43 transitioning from the power 00:00:37.50\00:00:39.40 of Babylon to the power of Media Persia. 00:00:39.43\00:00:41.84 We see in Daniel 2 these four kingdoms that are revealed to 00:00:41.87\00:00:46.14 King Nebuchadnezzar and we have moved from the head of gold 00:00:46.17\00:00:49.41 to the chest of silver. 00:00:49.44\00:00:51.61 Media Persia was a kingdom that was to follow Babylon 00:00:51.65\00:00:54.35 in this secession and Darius is the ruler. 00:00:54.42\00:00:56.69 He is establishing his kingdom in place of the Babylonian 00:00:56.72\00:00:59.89 kingdom and as he establishes his kingdom here in 00:00:59.92\00:01:03.06 verse 1 in and onward. 00:01:03.09\00:01:04.56 He decides that he is going to set as one of the 00:01:04.59\00:01:08.10 principal rulers, presidents in his kingdom. 00:01:08.13\00:01:10.67 One of those rulers was part of the kingdom of Babylon. 00:01:10.70\00:01:14.00 Who do you think that is? 00:01:14.04\00:01:15.37 Daniel of course. 00:01:15.40\00:01:16.74 Daniel and let's read here in verse 1, Daniel Chapter 6. 00:01:16.77\00:01:19.71 "It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom 120 princes," 00:01:19.74\00:01:22.94 "which should be over the whole kingdom. " 00:01:22.98\00:01:25.05 "And over these," verse 2, "three presidents; of whom" 00:01:25.08\00:01:29.02 "Daniel was first; that the princes might give an account" 00:01:29.05\00:01:32.99 "unto them, and the king should have no damage. " 00:01:33.66\00:01:35.56 And it says in verse 3, "then this Daniel was preferred" 00:01:35.59\00:01:39.33 "above the presidents and princes, because an excellent" 00:01:39.36\00:01:42.40 "Spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him" 00:01:42.43\00:01:45.50 "over the whole realm. " 00:01:45.53\00:01:47.57 This is amazing, Daniel again emerges in this story as one 00:01:47.60\00:01:53.27 who distinguishes himself by virtue of his integrity. 00:01:53.31\00:01:58.01 He has purposed in his heart to serve God. 00:01:58.05\00:02:00.52 He has been faithful in his commitment to the Lord. 00:02:00.55\00:02:04.59 He has been faithful in his service to this foreign power, 00:02:04.62\00:02:08.32 even though he is a captive, a slave in a foreign land. 00:02:08.36\00:02:12.43 He serves with all his might and talent as though he were 00:02:12.46\00:02:16.43 in his own homeland. 00:02:16.46\00:02:18.57 Daniel is a person of incredible character and integrity. 00:02:18.60\00:02:24.27 This works itself out in the king, King Darius, of the 00:02:24.31\00:02:29.91 Medes and the Persians. 00:02:29.94\00:02:31.28 He recognizes Daniel and he determined in verse 3, 00:02:31.31\00:02:35.42 to sit Daniel over the entire realm, only second to the 00:02:35.45\00:02:39.05 king himself and this of course begins to arouse jealousy 00:02:39.09\00:02:43.79 in the hearts of those other presidents and princes that 00:02:43.83\00:02:47.96 are in the kingdom but don't have the same character and 00:02:48.00\00:02:52.17 integrity as Daniel. 00:02:52.20\00:02:53.54 So they begin to contrive and to lay a trap for Daniel. 00:02:53.57\00:02:57.74 What is so incredible about this is Darius recognizes in 00:02:57.77\00:03:02.14 Daniel this excellent Spirit. 00:03:02.21\00:03:03.91 He has already seen that he is capable and the whole 00:03:03.95\00:03:07.45 point is that we are in a political environment here. 00:03:07.48\00:03:10.92 Everyone is on the take. 00:03:10.95\00:03:12.29 Everyone has a price and Daniel doesn't. 00:03:12.32\00:03:15.22 Daniel is different from everyone else. 00:03:15.29\00:03:18.13 He has an excellent spirit and I would venture to say 00:03:18.16\00:03:21.70 that he has the Spirit of God. 00:03:21.73\00:03:23.06 He has an other centered, selfless Spirit. 00:03:23.10\00:03:26.77 So he is not into any of this for himself. 00:03:26.80\00:03:30.51 He is not thinking about himself. 00:03:30.54\00:03:31.87 When Darius looks at Daniel, he says there is a man I 00:03:31.91\00:03:35.94 can trust because there is nothing about him that is 00:03:35.98\00:03:39.18 going to make a decision that will benefit himself. 00:03:39.21\00:03:42.72 It is all going to be other centered decision-making. 00:03:42.75\00:03:45.59 I think that even though he is one of the 3 00:03:45.62\00:03:48.46 presidents, I think that I will set him above 00:03:48.49\00:03:49.96 all of the presidents. 00:03:49.99\00:03:51.73 I see that I can trust this man. 00:03:51.76\00:03:54.93 This is the essence basically of why these 00:03:54.96\00:03:58.13 presidents are upset. 00:03:58.17\00:03:59.50 These other presidents and princes are upset because 00:03:59.53\00:04:02.30 in the political environment everyone has a price, 00:04:02.34\00:04:05.34 everyone is on the take, and they are out to get 00:04:05.37\00:04:08.34 something for themselves. 00:04:08.38\00:04:09.94 As long as Daniel is head over them, 00:04:09.98\00:04:12.68 that is not going to happen. 00:04:12.71\00:04:14.22 Daniel doesn't even aspire to a higher position. 00:04:14.25\00:04:17.75 He is just doing his best. 00:04:17.82\00:04:19.55 He is being faithful. 00:04:19.59\00:04:21.09 He is being honest and 00:04:21.12\00:04:23.06 serving the king in what 00:04:23.09\00:04:24.93 ever capacity he has placed in, 00:04:24.99\00:04:26.80 and it is his integrity 00:04:26.83\00:04:28.73 that begins to elevate him in the estimation of the king. 00:04:28.76\00:04:33.47 These individuals who begin to conspire against Daniel James, 00:04:33.50\00:04:38.17 they begin to look at him and examine him, and even as his 00:04:38.21\00:04:42.81 enemies, it says down in verse 4, that he was faithful and 00:04:42.88\00:04:47.45 there was no fault that they could find in him. 00:04:47.48\00:04:50.69 He was other centered, selfless service, and he had 00:04:50.72\00:04:54.49 honor and integrity, he had obedience, he had purity. 00:04:54.52\00:04:58.03 All these characteristics of who Daniel was. 00:04:58.06\00:05:01.56 His person, appealed to Darius. 00:05:01.60\00:05:04.00 Darius saw these because 00:05:04.03\00:05:05.60 Darius himself, I think, was 00:05:05.63\00:05:07.17 developing these characters 00:05:07.20\00:05:08.54 in his own heart and mind. 00:05:08.57\00:05:09.90 We will see that as the story progresses. 00:05:09.94\00:05:11.27 So it is amazing when you think about it, it is amazing 00:05:11.31\00:05:14.71 that some one could stand in a political realm, a 00:05:14.74\00:05:18.15 political environment and enemies can't find fault. 00:05:18.18\00:05:21.52 There is a lot of mudslinging that goes on 00:05:21.58\00:05:23.28 in a political environment. 00:05:23.32\00:05:24.65 As soon as someone is aspired to a certain position, 00:05:24.69\00:05:27.76 the other opponent is going to get the garbage on 00:05:27.82\00:05:30.99 that person and get it out in the public. 00:05:31.03\00:05:33.13 So here we see the presidents and princes trying to 00:05:33.16\00:05:36.97 find something on Daniel. 00:05:37.00\00:05:38.57 They are trying to get something on him and they 00:05:38.60\00:05:40.20 can't find anything. 00:05:40.24\00:05:42.00 He is standing before his enemies without fault. 00:05:42.04\00:05:44.44 So in verse 5 they come to 00:05:44.47\00:05:46.27 the only conclusion they can 00:05:46.31\00:05:48.14 and that is that they are 00:05:48.18\00:05:49.91 going to seek to find fault in Daniel. 00:05:49.94\00:05:52.28 It says in verse 5 "to find fault in Daniel" 00:05:52.31\00:05:55.65 "concerning the law of his God. " 00:05:55.72\00:05:59.65 They know that Daniel is faithful, that Daniel is 00:05:59.69\00:06:03.29 filled with integrity and if they are going to trip 00:06:03.32\00:06:06.16 him up, if they are going to trap him, they are going 00:06:06.19\00:06:08.96 to have to somehow capitalize on his strengths, 00:06:09.00\00:06:12.57 not on his weaknesses. 00:06:12.60\00:06:14.34 They cannot see any weaknesses. 00:06:14.37\00:06:15.77 It is amazing so they come before the king, 00:06:15.80\00:06:18.31 they assemble before the king and they praise him, 00:06:18.34\00:06:21.74 they flatter him, O Darius live for ever. 00:06:21.78\00:06:24.11 Then they speak a lie, and in every political situation 00:06:24.15\00:06:28.52 you have about a 90% truth and just a little bit 00:06:28.55\00:06:31.45 of a lie, that is taking place here, verse 7. 00:06:31.49\00:06:34.32 "All the Presidents of the kingdom, the governors," 00:06:34.36\00:06:36.46 "and the princes, the counselors, and the captains," 00:06:36.49\00:06:38.73 "have consulted together to establish a royal statute," 00:06:38.76\00:06:41.43 "and to make a firm decree, that whosoever shall ask a" 00:06:41.46\00:06:44.20 "petition of any God or man for 30 days, save of thee," 00:06:44.23\00:06:46.90 "O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions. " 00:06:46.97\00:06:49.84 Now that is not true. 00:06:49.87\00:06:51.21 All of the princes and governors have not consulted 00:06:51.24\00:06:54.74 together, they left one person out. 00:06:54.78\00:06:56.41 Daniel has not been included in this consultation for 00:06:56.44\00:07:00.05 a deliberate purpose. 00:07:00.08\00:07:01.42 But the president believes, the king I should say, 00:07:01.45\00:07:04.39 believes them. 00:07:04.42\00:07:05.75 He trusts them and thinks that they have his well-being. 00:07:05.79\00:07:09.86 He is flattered, this is a great idea the king is thinking, 00:07:09.89\00:07:14.10 you mean 30 days? 00:07:14.10\00:07:16.20 Everyone will be focused on me and nobody will be able 00:07:16.23\00:07:19.63 to recognize any gods authority or any other human beings 00:07:19.67\00:07:23.04 authority except for me, that's a great idea. 00:07:23.10\00:07:25.51 Pride is intoxicating, pride can cause us to do things, or to 00:07:25.54\00:07:29.71 be deceived into doing things we wouldn't normally do. 00:07:29.74\00:07:32.28 So that is what they are using, they are using the 00:07:32.31\00:07:34.82 intoxicating influence of pride. 00:07:34.85\00:07:36.65 This is the influence that Satan, our enemy used to gain 00:07:36.69\00:07:40.09 our obedience and allegiance. 00:07:40.16\00:07:42.09 It is the same influence they are using 00:07:42.12\00:07:43.89 here towards Darius. 00:07:43.93\00:07:45.26 And yet we know that the king, in this instance, 00:07:45.29\00:07:49.13 just like Nebuchadnezzar, is one upon whom the Lord 00:07:49.16\00:07:53.00 has taken an interest. 00:07:53.03\00:07:54.94 The Lord wants the heart of king Darius. 00:07:54.97\00:07:58.54 He wants to bring him to himself for eternal salvation. 00:07:58.57\00:08:02.64 You see in the king that he is inclined to the Lord. 00:08:02.68\00:08:06.35 Yes, in fact maybe more so than Nebuchadnezzar was. 00:08:06.38\00:08:10.05 We will see these principles later on. 00:08:10.09\00:08:12.19 It behooves us to recognize how that even good people, 00:08:12.22\00:08:15.92 people who are inclined in the right way, and when I say 00:08:15.96\00:08:19.63 good I use that term loosely. 00:08:19.69\00:08:21.23 How much they, we can, can be influenced deceptively. 00:08:21.26\00:08:27.07 How pride can be used to intoxicate us and mislead us in 00:08:27.14\00:08:32.54 a way that causes us to make decisions to make choices 00:08:32.57\00:08:37.98 that are not in harmony with God's will. 00:08:38.01\00:08:40.12 It can be hurtful to other people. 00:08:40.15\00:08:41.48 The king was a smart guy, but you can see here that 00:08:41.52\00:08:43.62 appealing to his pride, his arrogance and their flattery 00:08:43.65\00:08:48.02 skewed his reasoning power and he doesn't even see 00:08:48.06\00:08:52.39 what they are up to. 00:08:52.43\00:08:53.76 Somehow he is blind to their plan because we learn, 00:08:53.80\00:08:56.73 as the story goes on, that the king of course favors 00:08:56.77\00:08:59.60 Daniel, he doesn't want any harm to come to Daniel. 00:08:59.63\00:09:02.44 That's why he placed him above his kingdom. 00:09:02.50\00:09:03.84 The moment that he realizes what is taking place, 00:09:03.87\00:09:08.68 it says there in verse 14 that the king "was greatly" 00:09:08.71\00:09:13.62 "displeased with himself. " 00:09:13.65\00:09:15.82 This is an indication that here is a man with a true heart, 00:09:15.85\00:09:22.16 who has sensitivity to the moving of 00:09:22.19\00:09:25.43 God's Spirit upon him. 00:09:25.46\00:09:26.80 He is displeased with himself. 00:09:26.83\00:09:28.46 This is the king, he doesn't need to be displeased with 00:09:28.50\00:09:31.50 himself, but Daniel's life is of value to the king and he 00:09:31.53\00:09:34.47 realizes that he has been tricked, he has been deceived. 00:09:34.50\00:09:38.61 He doesn't want Daniel to be subjected to this deception 00:09:38.64\00:09:42.71 and this harm, he wants Daniel to be delivered. 00:09:42.74\00:09:45.58 Absolutely and what is powerful about this story, 00:09:45.61\00:09:48.42 as you are looking at the 00:09:48.45\00:09:49.88 king you see in many 00:09:49.95\00:09:51.82 instances a type of Christ. 00:09:51.85\00:09:53.39 You see the Spirit of Christ 00:09:53.42\00:09:54.76 and His attitude the way he 00:09:54.79\00:09:56.12 responds and you know God's spirit is working on his heart. 00:09:56.16\00:09:58.66 He is responding to that. 00:09:58.69\00:10:00.13 You also see in Daniel something that is interesting. 00:10:00.16\00:10:02.63 I don't know if you have ever experienced this Ty. 00:10:02.66\00:10:05.10 I have been in situations, as a Christian, as a believer, 00:10:05.17\00:10:09.50 where I have been uncomfortable, perhaps, praying publicly. 00:10:09.54\00:10:13.38 I travel a lot, I'm in an airport and getting some lunch. 00:10:13.41\00:10:17.25 There are people all around me and I am not sure if people 00:10:17.28\00:10:21.08 are going to look at me funny, or think funny things 00:10:21.12\00:10:23.18 if I pause and pray. 00:10:23.22\00:10:24.95 Daniel here is a powerful testimony of the necessity 00:10:25.02\00:10:30.63 to connect with God in prayer. 00:10:30.66\00:10:32.16 In all times and in all situations. 00:10:32.19\00:10:33.76 He is not sitting in an airport, it is not a little 00:10:33.80\00:10:37.10 thing for Daniel, this is huge. 00:10:37.13\00:10:38.80 This decree goes forth, it is signed and it goes forth. 00:10:38.83\00:10:42.60 No man can ask a petition of any gods save of Darius. 00:10:42.64\00:10:46.61 When it goes forth it says in verse 10, "when Daniel knew 00:10:46.64\00:10:50.55 that the writing was signed," he knew it was signed. 00:10:50.58\00:10:52.58 "He went to his house," his windows were open, 00:10:52.61\00:10:56.79 he didn't close them. 00:10:56.82\00:10:58.15 "His chamber windows were opened towards Jerusalem," 00:10:58.19\00:11:01.62 "he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed," 00:11:01.69\00:11:04.93 "and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime. " 00:11:04.96\00:11:07.86 Now what is incredible about this, it is not just that he 00:11:07.96\00:11:10.73 prayed, not that he just prayed even though his life was 00:11:10.77\00:11:13.57 at stake, here I am wondering if I should pray 00:11:13.60\00:11:16.14 for my lunch in an airport. 00:11:16.17\00:11:17.77 His life is at stake, if he prays he is dead. 00:11:17.84\00:11:20.71 But he does it openly, just like he did before time. 00:11:20.74\00:11:24.08 He does not close his windows and shut the doors. 00:11:24.11\00:11:27.38 He doesn't openly and when he prays he says, 00:11:27.45\00:11:30.02 thank you Lord, thank you. 00:11:30.05\00:11:32.29 You know what he is saying, he is saying, thank you Lord 00:11:32.32\00:11:34.09 because I know that You have a plan in all of this. 00:11:34.12\00:11:37.89 As bad as this looks, as difficult as this seems, 00:11:37.93\00:11:41.56 as great of a trial, friends that may be coming 00:11:41.60\00:11:45.27 upon you in your life. 00:11:45.30\00:11:46.63 As dark as your circumstances may be, you can praise 00:11:46.67\00:11:49.64 the Lord because that is no time for you to sever your 00:11:49.67\00:11:52.81 connection with God. 00:11:52.84\00:11:54.18 That is no time for you not to pray. 00:11:54.21\00:11:55.54 When you are most needy, when you are most overwhelmed, 00:11:55.58\00:11:57.51 when you are most discouraged, that is the time to 00:11:57.55\00:11:59.61 maintain that connection with God and to thank God 00:11:59.65\00:12:01.72 because He is going to do something powerful 00:12:01.75\00:12:04.39 through you to His glory. 00:12:04.42\00:12:07.16 So James, Daniel knows that 00:12:07.19\00:12:09.19 the decree has gone forth. 00:12:09.22\00:12:11.23 He knows his life is in 00:12:11.26\00:12:13.50 danger and he understands 00:12:13.53\00:12:15.70 his situation, but he is unwavering in his faithfulness. 00:12:15.73\00:12:20.00 He is free from fear. 00:12:20.04\00:12:23.07 He absolutely is unwavering and he is not concerned with 00:12:23.10\00:12:29.68 the outcome, he is not himself engaging in counter 00:12:29.71\00:12:33.72 manipulation maneuvers in order to save himself. 00:12:33.75\00:12:37.75 As you pointed out earlier, Daniel is governed by a 00:12:37.82\00:12:41.79 deep-seated other centeredness. 00:12:41.82\00:12:43.96 He is genuinely concerned for the king, and he is as 00:12:43.99\00:12:48.86 evidenced, in previous chapters, he is even concerned 00:12:48.90\00:12:52.97 for his enemies, those who are contriving against him. 00:12:53.00\00:12:57.07 Daniels heart is set upon faithfulness to his God and 00:12:57.11\00:13:00.94 a genuine concern and love for his fellow human beings, 00:13:00.98\00:13:04.71 even his enemies. 00:13:04.75\00:13:06.08 He just precedes as is his daily habit to kneel down and 00:13:06.11\00:13:10.52 pray, he is not concerned with the outcome for himself. 00:13:10.59\00:13:14.16 He is confident that God has a whole matter in hand. 00:13:14.19\00:13:17.39 This is powerful Ty, because basically what Daniel is 00:13:17.43\00:13:20.80 doing he is saying, I don't trust in earthly powers. 00:13:20.86\00:13:24.17 I don't trust in the favor of kings. 00:13:24.20\00:13:26.27 I don't trust in my situation or circumstances. 00:13:26.30\00:13:29.07 Daniel could think will I could figure this out. 00:13:29.10\00:13:31.84 I have been made number one ruler even though I came from 00:13:31.87\00:13:34.78 Babylon, I have a lot of pull and influence with the king. 00:13:34.81\00:13:37.51 He doesn't trust any of that because that can perish in 00:13:37.55\00:13:40.22 a moment, it can perish in a day. 00:13:40.25\00:13:41.68 His complete trust and loyalty is with God. 00:13:41.72\00:13:45.49 I think it is a powerful testimony. 00:13:45.52\00:13:46.99 I think that is what God is wanting for you and me friends. 00:13:47.02\00:13:49.82 I think God wants us to put our complete trust in Him 00:13:49.86\00:13:52.96 and not in the circumstances of life. 00:13:52.99\00:13:55.63 Not in the favor of kings, or princes, or presidents. 00:13:55.66\00:13:59.73 He wants us to put our complete trust in Him. 00:13:59.77\00:14:01.97 Then we can have joy and peace and we can know that 00:14:02.00\00:14:04.81 the outcome is going to be good and positive 00:14:04.84\00:14:06.71 for Him and for us. 00:14:06.74\00:14:08.41 Don't go away we will be right back! 00:14:08.44\00:14:10.15
