Welcome back friends! 00:00:01.93\00:00:03.26 We are in Daniel Chapter 5. 00:00:03.30\00:00:04.63 We are picking up as Daniel 00:00:04.67\00:00:06.00 is brought in before Belshazzar 00:00:06.03\00:00:07.37 right here in verse 13. 00:00:07.40\00:00:08.90 "Then was Daniel brought in before the king. " 00:00:08.94\00:00:11.41 "And the king spake and said unto Daniel, are you 00:00:11.44\00:00:13.81 "Daniel, which are at the children of the captivity of" 00:00:13.84\00:00:16.21 "Judah, whom the king, my father brought out Jewry?" 00:00:16.28\00:00:18.58 "I have heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in" 00:00:18.61\00:00:21.62 "thee, and that light and understanding and an excellent" 00:00:21.65\00:00:24.59 "wisdom is found in thee. " Verse 14. 00:00:24.62\00:00:27.22 "And now the wise men, the astrologers, had been brought" 00:00:27.26\00:00:30.06 "in before me, that they should read this writing," 00:00:30.09\00:00:32.66 "and make known unto me the interpretation there of:" 00:00:32.69\00:00:35.16 "but they could not show the interpretation of the thing;" 00:00:35.20\00:00:38.77 Here is Belshazzar acknowledging that his own wise men 00:00:38.80\00:00:42.20 cannot read or interpret this writing that has been 00:00:42.24\00:00:45.61 written by this bodiless hand. 00:00:45.64\00:00:47.51 He is recognizing that his wise men are insufficient, 00:00:47.54\00:00:51.11 in a sense it seems like he is disconnected from his 00:00:51.15\00:00:54.68 own wise men. 00:00:54.72\00:00:56.05 He is in this party atmosphere, if you will. 00:00:56.08\00:00:58.02 He is disconnected from the Queen Mother, 00:00:58.09\00:01:00.49 she is not there with him, 00:01:00.52\00:01:01.86 excuse me from his Queen, she is not there with him. 00:01:01.89\00:01:03.22 He's disconnected from his wise men. 00:01:03.26\00:01:04.99 He seems like he doesn't really care. 00:01:05.06\00:01:06.80 He hasn't threaten the wise men, nor said anything. 00:01:06.83\00:01:09.20 He is bringing up to say, hey Daniel, my wise men can't 00:01:09.23\00:01:11.63 figure it out, maybe you can figure it out. 00:01:11.67\00:01:13.00 If you can figure that out it would be great. 00:01:13.03\00:01:14.37 It is a scary thing to me and I really just want to get 00:01:14.40\00:01:16.81 back to my party and not have to deal with these 00:01:16.84\00:01:18.91 scary images that are showing up on my wall. 00:01:18.94\00:01:20.94 I think it is important to recognize also the context 00:01:20.98\00:01:25.38 here, the history that is taking place here. 00:01:25.41\00:01:27.22 There is a strange security that he has because at this very 00:01:27.25\00:01:34.16 time, as this party is going 00:01:34.19\00:01:36.59 forward, Babylon is surrounded 00:01:36.62\00:01:39.36 by the Media Persian armies. 00:01:39.39\00:01:42.03 But the security that Belshazzar feels at this time makes him 00:01:42.06\00:01:46.53 rather casual even though he is terrified by what he is seeing. 00:01:46.57\00:01:51.01 He is rather casual about it and he feels secure because 00:01:51.04\00:01:53.91 the fact is Babylon is this great kingdom. 00:01:53.94\00:01:56.54 The greatest kingdom in the world. 00:01:56.58\00:01:57.91 The river Euphrates runs through the city. 00:01:57.95\00:02:00.88 There are food supplies to keep them going for years. 00:02:00.92\00:02:05.85 So he is just interested in continuing on with his 00:02:05.92\00:02:10.86 lifestyle of opulence and partying. 00:02:10.89\00:02:13.83 He just wants to know, Hey, what does this mean? 00:02:13.86\00:02:17.07 Well, he doesn't really want to know what this means. 00:02:17.13\00:02:20.27 When we see the interpretation unfold, his fear is 00:02:20.30\00:02:23.41 going to turn to terror. 00:02:23.47\00:02:25.04 At this point though, he is in the party atmosphere, 00:02:25.07\00:02:28.04 like you say, he feels like he's secure. 00:02:28.11\00:02:30.41 He has a false security and in that context it is 00:02:30.45\00:02:33.95 interesting because it plays out here in this verse 16. 00:02:33.98\00:02:38.29 "And I have heard of thee, that thou canst make" 00:02:38.32\00:02:42.16 "interpretations, and dissolve doubts: now at thou canst" 00:02:42.19\00:02:44.96 "read the writing and make known to me the interpretation" 00:02:45.03\00:02:47.76 "thereof, that I shall be clothed with scarlet," 00:02:47.76\00:02:50.23 "and have a chain of gold about thy neck, and shall be" 00:02:50.30\00:02:52.70 "the third ruler in the kingdom. " 00:02:52.73\00:02:54.47 This is a confirmation of his false security. 00:02:54.50\00:02:57.61 Basically he is offering Daniel a reward. 00:02:57.64\00:03:00.48 He is saying you can have a scarlet robe, 00:03:00.51\00:03:03.21 which was royalty. 00:03:03.24\00:03:04.58 You can have chains of gold around your neck. 00:03:04.61\00:03:06.82 You will be third ruler in the kingdom, he is the 00:03:06.85\00:03:10.69 second ruler because Nabonidus, his father is out on 00:03:10.72\00:03:13.89 a campaign, probably in hiding from the Media Persian 00:03:13.92\00:03:17.03 Army somewhere, and that was the son of Nebuchadnezzar, 00:03:17.06\00:03:20.10 or the ruler second down from Nebuchadnezzar. 00:03:20.16\00:03:22.03 So he was probably just made ruler in Babylon and that 00:03:22.06\00:03:26.27 is why they are having this celebration. 00:03:26.30\00:03:27.70 Daniel would be third after Nabonidus, himself, and yet in 00:03:27.77\00:03:31.64 a sense, we know in context of the story, that it is a 00:03:31.67\00:03:35.51 a completely false security. 00:03:35.54\00:03:36.88 It is obvious that he is not connected with reality here. 00:03:36.91\00:03:41.68 Not only does he offer rewards that are monetary rewards 00:03:41.72\00:03:46.72 to Daniel, but he tells him that you will be third 00:03:46.76\00:03:49.12 ruler in the kingdom. 00:03:49.16\00:03:50.49 He obviously expects that Babylon is going to continue 00:03:50.53\00:03:53.96 on as the prominent power and he has 00:03:54.00\00:03:57.73 no expectations of ruin. 00:03:57.77\00:04:00.10 Exactly so verse 17 it is interesting how Daniel answers. 00:04:00.14\00:04:03.30 Daniel answers, "then Daniel answered and said before the" 00:04:03.34\00:04:06.61 "king, Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give thy rewards" 00:04:06.64\00:04:10.31 "to another; yet I will read the writing unto the king," 00:04:10.35\00:04:13.98 "and I will make known to him the interpretation. " 00:04:14.02\00:04:16.48 What I really like about this is Daniel understands the 00:04:16.52\00:04:19.99 difference between temporal rewards and false security, 00:04:20.02\00:04:23.49 and the heavenly assurance that God has given us. 00:04:23.53\00:04:26.46 The assurance that we have of streets of gold. 00:04:26.49\00:04:29.33 Why would I want a necklace of gold when I am going to 00:04:29.36\00:04:32.63 be walking on streets of gold? 00:04:32.67\00:04:34.20 Why would I want to be third ruler in the kingdom, 00:04:34.24\00:04:37.07 when God has promised that I can sit on a throne with 00:04:37.11\00:04:39.87 Him and rule as a king and a priest? 00:04:39.91\00:04:42.51 Why would I want to wear a robe of scarlet, when I have 00:04:42.58\00:04:46.28 been promised a robe of righteousness? 00:04:46.31\00:04:48.95 Of purity, the Bible says, "though your sins be as" 00:04:49.02\00:04:50.95 "scarlet, they shall be white as snow. " 00:04:50.99\00:04:52.49 So Belshazzar is basically saying, Daniel you can have 00:04:52.52\00:04:55.19 a life of sinfulness, and you can be royalty, and to be 00:04:55.22\00:04:57.86 treated as royalty. 00:04:57.89\00:04:59.23 Daniel says, no thanks, I don't want the pleasure of 00:04:59.26\00:05:01.03 sin for a season. 00:05:01.06\00:05:02.40 I want the white robe of Christ's righteousness and live 00:05:02.43\00:05:04.93 with Him throughout all eternity. 00:05:04.97\00:05:06.60 No thanks, I don't want a chain of gold, I want to walk 00:05:06.63\00:05:08.60 on the streets of gold. 00:05:08.64\00:05:09.97 No thanks, I don't want to be third ruler in this kingdom 00:05:10.01\00:05:12.41 that is about to fall, I want to be ruler with Christ 00:05:12.44\00:05:15.18 for all eternity. 00:05:15.21\00:05:16.54 There is another study in contrast here James. 00:05:16.58\00:05:18.85 That is that the illusion, the appearance here is that 00:05:18.91\00:05:22.98 Belshazzar is the one in the adventitious position. 00:05:23.02\00:05:27.06 Daniel's a mere slave, Daniel is a Eunuch, Daniel is a captive 00:05:27.09\00:05:32.69 in a foreign land and yet Daniel rises head and 00:05:32.73\00:05:35.66 shoulders above every one in this kingdom. 00:05:35.70\00:05:38.73 His integrity, his faithfulness to God is what gives him 00:05:38.77\00:05:43.94 an excellent spirit, the Holy Spirit of God is upon him. 00:05:43.97\00:05:49.08 And within him and Daniel is the one who is 00:05:49.11\00:05:52.25 really secure here. 00:05:52.28\00:05:53.62 Daniel is the one who has no reason to fear. 00:05:53.65\00:05:55.85 Daniel knows that great political upheaval is underway. 00:05:55.88\00:06:00.42 There is to be a monumental shift of power from Babylon 00:06:00.46\00:06:04.79 to Media Persia and Daniel is sailing through this entire 00:06:04.83\00:06:09.10 process with absolute peace because he knows that 00:06:09.13\00:06:13.70 the kingdom that he has allegiance to, 00:06:13.74\00:06:16.37 is not a kingdom of this world. 00:06:16.40\00:06:18.81 So he recounts to Belshazzar the 00:06:18.87\00:06:22.01 history of Nebuchadnezzar, his 00:06:22.04\00:06:24.48 grandfather he says in verse 18 00:06:24.51\00:06:26.88 "... the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father a" 00:06:26.92\00:06:31.35 "kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honor:" 00:06:31.42\00:06:33.02 "and for the majesty that he gave him, included all people," 00:06:33.05\00:06:37.13 "nations, and languages, trembling before him, 00:06:37.16\00:06:39.39 and fearing before him" "whom he would he slew. " 00:06:39.43\00:06:41.63 We talked about that, that dictatorship, that aspect of 00:06:41.66\00:06:45.40 Nebuchadnezzar's character that wasn't so great. 00:06:45.43\00:06:47.50 "And whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he" 00:06:47.54\00:06:49.74 "set up; and whom he would he put down. " 00:06:49.77\00:06:51.11 "But when his heart was lifted up," verse 20, "and his" 00:06:51.14\00:06:53.94 "mind hardened in pride, he was taken from his 00:06:53.98\00:06:57.15 "throne, and his glory was taken from him: he was" 00:06:57.18\00:06:59.58 "driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made" 00:06:59.61\00:07:02.42 "like the beast," verse 21, "and his dwelling was with" 00:07:02.45\00:07:05.35 "the wild asses; they fed him with grass like oxen," 00:07:05.39\00:07:08.26 "and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; till he" 00:07:08.29\00:07:11.26 "knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men," 00:07:11.29\00:07:14.20 "and he appointed over it whomsoever he will. " 00:07:14.23\00:07:17.83 Now, as he summarizes the history of his grandfather, 00:07:17.87\00:07:22.34 Nebuchadnezzar, he then goes on to say, and you, 00:07:22.37\00:07:26.47 Belshazzar, verse 22, "you have not humbled your heart," 00:07:26.51\00:07:30.55 "even though you knew all this. " 00:07:30.58\00:07:33.48 Here is where we see the influence of alcohol. 00:07:33.52\00:07:35.48 Here's where we see the influence of drugs, he knew 00:07:35.52\00:07:37.72 that history, he knew it. 00:07:37.75\00:07:39.09 He probably sat on his grandfather's knee and 00:07:39.12\00:07:41.32 Nebuchadnezzar recounted it to him because 00:07:41.36\00:07:43.69 Nebuchadnezzar recounted it to all the nation. 00:07:43.73\00:07:45.99 Nebuchadnezzar was interested in being a witness for God. 00:07:46.03\00:07:49.43 His heart had been converted and changed and transformed 00:07:49.46\00:07:52.87 by the Spirit of God. 00:07:52.90\00:07:54.24 You knew all this, verse 23, "you lifted up thyself" 00:07:54.27\00:07:57.27 "against the Lord of heaven, and they brought the" 00:07:57.31\00:07:59.84 "vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy 00:07:59.87\00:08:02.38 lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine" 00:08:02.41\00:08:04.71 "in them; and thou hast praised the gods a silver, and" 00:08:04.75\00:08:07.38 "gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not," 00:08:07.42\00:08:11.15 "nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath" 00:08:11.19\00:08:15.39 "is, and whose are all thy ways, has thou not glorified:" 00:08:15.42\00:08:19.59 That is a powerful statement there. 00:08:19.63\00:08:20.96 This is the influence of self 00:08:20.96\00:08:23.37 exaltation, the influence of 00:08:23.43\00:08:25.80 of arrogance upon Belshazzar's 00:08:25.83\00:08:27.67 mind and heart has blinded 00:08:27.70\00:08:29.47 him to his need. 00:08:29.50\00:08:30.84 And to the reality of the fact 00:08:30.87\00:08:32.97 in God we move and have our 00:08:33.01\00:08:34.84 being, I mean think about that 00:08:34.88\00:08:36.48 in the context of the gospel. 00:08:36.51\00:08:38.08 It is amazing that every one of us, not just Belshazzar. 00:08:38.11\00:08:41.88 Every single human being; man, woman, and child utterly 00:08:41.92\00:08:45.65 dependent on God for every breath that we take. 00:08:45.69\00:08:49.22 He is the One, according to the apostle Paul, 00:08:49.26\00:08:52.73 who by His mighty power sustains and holds together 00:08:52.76\00:08:56.13 all things and everything by His power consists. 00:08:56.16\00:08:59.50 If God were to back up from us, from us as individuals, 00:08:59.53\00:09:02.97 from our world, we would cease to exist. 00:09:03.00\00:09:04.67 There is a strong deception upon Belshazzar's mind. 00:09:04.71\00:09:08.91 He has no sense of reality, he is self-assured and he's 00:09:08.94\00:09:13.11 absolutely settled into a false security. 00:09:13.15\00:09:15.75 He is about to be awakened here as the words appear on 00:09:15.78\00:09:19.95 the wall you are judged, you are weighed, 00:09:19.99\00:09:23.96 you are found wanting, your kingdom is now taken from you 00:09:23.99\00:09:28.20 is the pronouncement. 00:09:28.23\00:09:29.56 Here's a type of a final judgment that all human beings 00:09:29.60\00:09:34.77 will be faced with. 00:09:34.80\00:09:36.14 It is so different, isn't it from what Paul says in 00:09:36.17\00:09:38.34 Acts 17 to the Greeks and all of the philosophers who in 00:09:38.37\00:09:42.31 ignorance don't realize that in God they have their life, 00:09:42.34\00:09:46.21 and move and have their being. 00:09:46.28\00:09:47.62 Daniel is bringing out the same truth here to Belshazzar. 00:09:47.65\00:09:50.85 In God we live and move and have our being. 00:09:50.89\00:09:52.85 When Paul speaks to these unbelievers in Athens, 00:09:52.89\00:09:56.89 he is speaking to people who are ignorantly were 00:09:56.93\00:10:00.40 worshiping God and they did know who He was. 00:10:00.43\00:10:03.83 Who are ignorant of the fact that God was sustaining 00:10:03.87\00:10:06.50 their very life. 00:10:06.53\00:10:07.87 But Belshazzar on the other hand, should not have been 00:10:07.90\00:10:09.87 ignorant of this, he knew this. 00:10:09.90\00:10:11.37 He knew better, you know the history and these 00:10:11.41\00:10:14.24 people didn't know. 00:10:14.28\00:10:15.61 In Acts 17 the outcome is different, 00:10:15.64\00:10:16.98 God winks at your ignorance. 00:10:17.01\00:10:18.48 In Daniel Chapter 5, the outcome is different because 00:10:18.51\00:10:21.98 he knows better than to be worshiping gold, silver, 00:10:22.05\00:10:25.35 and all of these different idols, he knows better than 00:10:25.39\00:10:28.69 to be turning away from the God, Who has been 00:10:28.72\00:10:30.73 sustaining his life. 00:10:30.76\00:10:32.09 In Chapter 5 of Daniel James, it is a sad Chapter and 00:10:32.13\00:10:35.73 closes on a sad note. 00:10:35.76\00:10:37.10 The gospel has been proclaimed up to this point. 00:10:37.13\00:10:41.50 Nebuchadnezzar has sent out 00:10:41.54\00:10:43.24 a letter to all the nations 00:10:43.27\00:10:44.67 and kingdoms of the world 00:10:44.71\00:10:46.11 giving his testimony of God's 00:10:46.14\00:10:47.78 grace and power and how God 00:10:47.81\00:10:49.18 has transformed his life. 00:10:49.24\00:10:50.58 His grandson, on the other hand, has hardened himself 00:10:50.61\00:10:53.48 against the Lord and against the knowledge of God's 00:10:53.52\00:10:56.35 grace and the history of his grandfather. 00:10:56.38\00:10:57.99 The Chapter closes with a sad note that Belshazzar, 00:10:58.02\00:11:01.99 the king of the Chaldeans was slain and the kingdom 00:11:02.02\00:11:05.99 was given over to the Medes, Darius becomes the king. 00:11:06.03\00:11:09.90 The kingdom of Babylon falls. 00:11:09.93\00:11:12.93 That is a sad history, but it is a powerful commentary 00:11:12.97\00:11:16.97 for each one of us Ty. 00:11:17.01\00:11:18.34 We need to recognize that it is important for us not 00:11:18.37\00:11:21.91 to pursue or follow the choices that Belshazzar made. 00:11:21.94\00:11:25.18 It is our prayer and our hope that you would choose 00:11:25.21\00:11:28.42 to acknowledge God's work in your life. 00:11:28.45\00:11:30.52 His sustaining grace and His favor towards you and 00:11:30.55\00:11:34.16 His desire to see you in the kingdom. 00:11:34.19\00:11:36.29 If you'll look at the history of how He has led you, 00:11:36.32\00:11:38.83 and you would not turn away from Him to gods of gold and 00:11:38.86\00:11:41.40 silver and to drugs but that you would turn your heart 00:11:41.43\00:11:44.20 over to Him and be saved eternally in His kingdom. 00:11:44.23\00:11:47.00
