Welcome friends to Books of the Book! 00:00:21.52\00:00:23.95 We are so glad you joined us 00:00:23.99\00:00:25.49 for study of the book of Daniel. 00:00:25.52\00:00:26.99 I'm Ty Gibson and with me is my 00:00:27.02\00:00:28.46 co-host James Rafferty. 00:00:28.49\00:00:29.82 It is good to be here Ty and 00:00:29.86\00:00:31.29 we are in Daniel Chapter 5. 00:00:31.36\00:00:32.79 We are dealing here with another 00:00:32.83\00:00:34.83 Chapter in the experience and 00:00:34.86\00:00:37.10 the life of a Babylonian ruler. 00:00:37.13\00:00:39.53 This time it is Belshazzar. 00:00:39.57\00:00:41.94 This chapter is really interesting because it dwells on 00:00:41.97\00:00:45.41 a different aspect of God's character. 00:00:45.44\00:00:47.44 God is a God of love and His love, that loving aspect 00:00:47.48\00:00:51.51 of God's character, the foundation of who He is, of His 00:00:51.55\00:00:55.52 Government is manifested in two different ways. 00:00:55.55\00:00:58.42 In mercy and in Justice. 00:00:58.45\00:01:00.69 Mercy and justice seemed to be opposites, but they come 00:01:00.72\00:01:03.46 together to form that character of love. 00:01:03.53\00:01:06.46 The foundational principle of love that is the essence 00:01:06.49\00:01:09.10 of who God is. 00:01:09.13\00:01:10.47 Daniel Chapter 5 James, I think is a study in contrast 00:01:10.50\00:01:14.34 in that sense. 00:01:14.37\00:01:15.70 We see in Chapter 4, the previous chapters of the book 00:01:15.74\00:01:20.14 of Daniel, the gradual, but finally radical conversion 00:01:20.18\00:01:24.35 of King Nebuchadnezzar as he comes under the influence 00:01:24.38\00:01:28.55 of God's mercy and grace. 00:01:28.58\00:01:30.45 Then we come to Chapter 5 and we have this contrast with 00:01:30.49\00:01:34.66 his son, or actually his grandson Belshazzar, who is 00:01:34.69\00:01:39.59 himself a witness to God's mercy, to God's grace. 00:01:39.63\00:01:44.43 He saw, knows the history of his grandfather, Nebuchadnezzar. 00:01:44.47\00:01:49.24 He knows God's influence, His mercy, His grace. 00:01:49.27\00:01:52.27 He knows it intellectually as a witness to it. 00:01:52.31\00:01:57.15 Yet Belshazzar does not respond to God's mercy, as did 00:01:57.18\00:02:01.42 Nebuchadnezzar, but in fact responds in such a way that 00:02:01.45\00:02:05.55 ultimately works his ruined. 00:02:05.59\00:02:06.92 Yes, and one of the reason of this is found right here 00:02:06.96\00:02:09.49 in the opening verses, Daniel 5:1. 00:02:09.52\00:02:12.39 "Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand" 00:02:12.43\00:02:15.80 "of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand. " 00:02:15.83\00:02:19.80 And it says in verse 2, "Belshazzar, while he tasted" 00:02:19.83\00:02:23.74 "the wine, commanded to bring the Golden and Silver vessels" 00:02:23.77\00:02:27.08 "which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out" 00:02:27.11\00:02:30.08 "of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king," 00:02:30.11\00:02:32.88 "and his princes, he is wives, and his concubines," 00:02:32.91\00:02:35.65 "might drink therein. " 00:02:35.72\00:02:37.05 It's no secret James, everybody knows that alcohol 00:02:37.09\00:02:41.19 impairs judgment. 00:02:41.22\00:02:42.89 The language here is, "while he tasted the wine. " 00:02:42.92\00:02:47.40 That is that Belshazzar, while under the influence of 00:02:47.40\00:02:51.67 alcohol, while under the influence of this massive party 00:02:51.70\00:02:55.94 he is holding with just drunkenness at every turn. 00:02:56.00\00:03:00.38 He is under the influence of alcohol and his judgment 00:03:00.44\00:03:04.18 is severely impaired and he begins to make decisions 00:03:04.25\00:03:08.58 that are in a sense, not even in a sense, directly 00:03:08.62\00:03:12.65 defining the God of heaven that he has witness as an 00:03:12.72\00:03:16.73 influence in Nebuchadnezzar's life. 00:03:16.79\00:03:18.63 He defines the God of heaven and enters into a state 00:03:18.69\00:03:22.63 of mind and a series of actions that are disrespectful 00:03:22.66\00:03:26.63 and irreverent and takes the vessels of the House of God, 00:03:26.70\00:03:30.04 the temple of God in Jerusalem, and he makes them a part 00:03:30.07\00:03:33.34 of his drunken feast. 00:03:33.41\00:03:34.81 Absolutely and what is interesting Ty, is the principal 00:03:34.84\00:03:38.35 we find in the Bible. 00:03:38.38\00:03:39.71 In the book of Proverbs we are 00:03:39.75\00:03:42.08 warned against partaking of 00:03:42.12\00:03:44.62 alcoholic drinks, alcoholic beverages. 00:03:44.65\00:03:47.22 Not even to look upon wine when it ferments, or changes, 00:03:47.26\00:03:50.73 because the influence that it has upon us tends in the 00:03:50.79\00:03:53.70 wrong direction and I am sure a lot of people out there 00:03:53.73\00:03:56.60 listening, myself included, who can point to the 00:03:56.63\00:03:59.57 influence of alcohol, the influence of drugs and say 00:03:59.63\00:04:02.80 I made decisions in my life, I took actions in my life 00:04:02.87\00:04:05.97 that were detrimental. 00:04:06.01\00:04:07.48 I possibly never recovered from, but they have taken my 00:04:07.51\00:04:10.21 life in a direction that I never wanted or intended. 00:04:10.25\00:04:13.48 If I wouldn't been under the influence of those drugs or 00:04:13.52\00:04:16.85 alcohol, I would have gone in a completely different 00:04:16.89\00:04:19.89 direction, it's ruined my life, it's impaired me. 00:04:19.92\00:04:23.12 I want to say to all those people right now that it 00:04:23.16\00:04:26.16 doesn't mean that God cannot recover you from that. 00:04:26.19\00:04:28.83 That is why it is so important for us to recognize, 00:04:28.86\00:04:31.70 that yes there is a place where we could make decisions 00:04:31.73\00:04:34.54 that bring us to a destiny that is not in harmony 00:04:34.57\00:04:37.57 with God's will a destiny of being lost which is what we are 00:04:37.61\00:04:40.21 going to find here with Belshazzar. 00:04:40.24\00:04:41.58 There is also a place for God can recover us. 00:04:41.61\00:04:44.65 God longs to recover us from the decisions we made while 00:04:44.68\00:04:48.05 under the influence of these drugs. 00:04:48.08\00:04:50.35 So we have here in Daniel 00:04:50.39\00:04:52.32 Chapter 5 a studying contrast 00:04:52.39\00:04:54.49 between the conversion of 00:04:54.52\00:04:56.56 Nebuchadnezzar and now the very clear rebellion, 00:04:56.59\00:05:01.43 and irreverence of Belshazzar. 00:05:01.46\00:05:04.33 And we have here a clear indication or contrast between 00:05:04.37\00:05:08.97 the affect of God's mercy and now the necessity of God 00:05:09.00\00:05:13.58 responding in justice. 00:05:13.61\00:05:15.88 So as Belshazzar is engaged in this drunken feast, as he 00:05:15.91\00:05:19.95 enters in to these irreverent actions shaking as it were, 00:05:19.98\00:05:23.99 his fist at the God of heaven, suddenly something 00:05:24.02\00:05:26.89 astounding takes place. 00:05:26.92\00:05:28.79 In verse 5, "in the same hour the finger of a man's hand" 00:05:28.82\00:05:33.73 "appeared and wrote opposite the lamp stand, on the" 00:05:33.76\00:05:37.53 "plaster of a wall of the king's palace; and the king" 00:05:37.57\00:05:41.37 "saw the part of the man's hand that wrote. " 00:05:41.40\00:05:44.67 Amazing, just out of nowhere, no doubt under the 00:05:44.71\00:05:47.81 influence of alcohol, he is doing a double take and 00:05:47.84\00:05:50.91 wondering is this real what I am witnessing? 00:05:50.95\00:05:54.12 But obviously he is not the only person who has seen it. 00:05:54.15\00:05:57.49 There are a thousand of his guests here at this feast. 00:05:57.52\00:06:01.32 They are all witnessing this blood curdling, haunting 00:06:01.36\00:06:05.06 thing that is taking place. 00:06:05.09\00:06:06.56 Imagine what you would feel, what I would feel, if all 00:06:06.59\00:06:10.87 of a sudden out of nowhere a hand, a bodiless hand begins 00:06:10.90\00:06:15.17 writing across the wall? 00:06:15.20\00:06:16.84 And he is filled with fear, and one of the reasons why 00:06:16.87\00:06:20.58 he is so filled with fear is because he does not 00:06:20.61\00:06:23.41 understand what the writing means. 00:06:23.45\00:06:25.28 So here comes this bodiless hand and it is writing these 00:06:25.31\00:06:28.28 words ME'- NE, ME'- NE, TE'- KEL, U-PHAR'- SIN 00:06:28.32\00:06:31.12 and he is trying to understand. 00:06:31.15\00:06:32.79 He has no understanding of what these words actually mean. 00:06:32.82\00:06:35.69 He knows that it is significant. 00:06:35.72\00:06:37.06 This is a supernatural event that is taking place. 00:06:37.09\00:06:40.93 Probably his conscious is awakened at that moment and 00:06:40.96\00:06:44.70 he is brought to sobriety in a second. 00:06:44.73\00:06:48.34 He is wondering what does this mean, it can't be 00:06:48.37\00:06:51.44 a positive thing, it must be fearful foreboding of the 00:06:51.51\00:06:54.54 future, but What does it all mean? 00:06:54.58\00:06:56.75 There's nothing as scary, nothing is fearful as not 00:06:56.78\00:07:00.82 understanding what the future holds. 00:07:00.85\00:07:02.82 He is so terrified in fact, that verse 6 of Daniel 00:07:02.85\00:07:07.62 Chapter 5 says, "... the joints of his hips were loosened. " 00:07:07.66\00:07:13.16 Another version says that his loins were loosened. 00:07:13.19\00:07:17.53 Some commentators say that maybe he became incontinent 00:07:17.57\00:07:21.90 at this point because he was so afraid. 00:07:21.97\00:07:23.44 So it says they are in verse 6, 00:07:23.47\00:07:25.47 "and his knees knocked against each other. " 00:07:25.54\00:07:28.11 I mean this guy was terrified. 00:07:28.14\00:07:30.38 Sin has that affect on us. 00:07:30.41\00:07:32.58 When the consciences heavy laden with guilt and 00:07:32.61\00:07:35.98 condemnation, somewhere in our hearts we know that we 00:07:36.02\00:07:40.16 are wrong and are walking contrary to the will of God. 00:07:40.19\00:07:44.59 That weight of guilt upon our conscience, it has the 00:07:44.63\00:07:48.30 potential to produce terror and fear in us when we 00:07:48.33\00:07:52.00 finally come face to face with the truth. 00:07:52.03\00:07:54.90 As you say that his conscious, to some degree, 00:07:54.97\00:07:57.11 is awakened right now and he knows he's in trouble. 00:07:57.17\00:08:00.18 He knows in his heart that something is taking place 00:08:00.21\00:08:03.14 there that is not in his favor. 00:08:03.18\00:08:04.65 It is really interesting because at this point, 00:08:04.68\00:08:06.65 Belshazzar wants to understand what the writing is. 00:08:06.68\00:08:10.52 There are probably many times in our lives, and many 00:08:10.55\00:08:13.69 times in the lives of our viewers, when we are not 00:08:13.76\00:08:16.83 interested in knowing what God has to say about our future. 00:08:16.86\00:08:19.43 We are not interested in understanding the prophecy. 00:08:19.46\00:08:22.36 Or understand this mysterious writing that comes from 00:08:22.40\00:08:25.20 heaven as we understand now, in the context of this 00:08:25.23\00:08:28.14 prophecy of this book, that this writing is from God. 00:08:28.17\00:08:31.04 It is a warning from God. 00:08:31.07\00:08:32.41 We are not interested and that is why it is so important 00:08:32.44\00:08:35.34 for us to recognize. 00:08:35.38\00:08:36.71 You see a lot of people think 00:08:36.75\00:08:38.08 that the prophecy in the 00:08:38.11\00:08:39.45 Bible is all doom and gloom. 00:08:39.48\00:08:41.48 It is written to make us afraid. 00:08:41.52\00:08:43.55 The truth of the matter is it is uncertainty about the 00:08:43.59\00:08:47.66 future, it is lacking in knowledge, and lacking the 00:08:47.69\00:08:51.09 understanding we need to be afraid of. 00:08:51.13\00:08:53.19 Belshazzar story is bringing this out. 00:08:53.23\00:08:55.13 God has not given us prophecy to scare us. 00:08:55.16\00:08:57.03 God has revealed prophecy to prepare us for what is ahead. 00:08:57.07\00:09:00.47 You look at our situation in the world today at any time 00:09:00.50\00:09:03.14 and you think we don't know what is going to happen. 00:09:03.17\00:09:05.81 We do not know what the economic future of this country, 00:09:05.84\00:09:08.44 of the world is and that is scary. 00:09:08.48\00:09:10.15 To be able to see what the future holds even if it isn't 00:09:10.18\00:09:13.62 the best, it gives a little bit of peace because it gives 00:09:13.65\00:09:17.75 us a sense of what we need to do in order to prepare. 00:09:17.79\00:09:21.86 Even if it is the worst, we can do something to prepare 00:09:21.89\00:09:25.36 for it, not knowing it all is even scarier. 00:09:25.43\00:09:28.00 That is why when the king seeks for the interpretation and 00:09:28.03\00:09:31.80 can't find one, it says verse 9, "then was king Belshazzar" 00:09:31.83\00:09:35.27 "greatly troubled, and his countenance was changed in him," 00:09:35.30\00:09:38.67 "and his lords were astonished. " 00:09:38.71\00:09:40.04 In other words, as fearful and afraid as he was the first 00:09:40.08\00:09:43.18 time, he was even more afraid when nobody could be found 00:09:43.21\00:09:46.45 to interpret this writing. 00:09:46.51\00:09:49.88 Just like his grandfather before him, Nebuchadnezzar, 00:09:49.92\00:09:53.32 he calls in the wise men, 00:09:53.36\00:09:55.12 the astrologers and they cannot 00:09:55.16\00:09:56.69 give the interpretation and 00:09:56.73\00:09:58.33 somehow he had to know the 00:09:58.36\00:09:59.79 history, he had to know the 00:09:59.83\00:10:01.13 history, but somehow he doesn't even think of Daniel. 00:10:01.16\00:10:06.20 His queen comes to him and says there is a man, verse 11 00:10:06.27\00:10:11.47 "there is a man in your kingdom, in whom is the Spirit" 00:10:11.51\00:10:16.71 "of the holy God;" 00:10:16.75\00:10:18.08 then the queen calls his attention to Daniel. 00:10:18.11\00:10:20.48 Immediately Daniel, of course, is called upon and 00:10:20.52\00:10:22.85 brought in before the king. 00:10:22.92\00:10:25.22 The king begins pleading with Daniel for an interpretation 00:10:25.25\00:10:29.52 of the dream, and as the interpretation comes to the 00:10:29.56\00:10:32.76 king it is not what he wants to hear. 00:10:32.79\00:10:35.80 Obviously, it says in verse 10, that the queen was 00:10:35.83\00:10:39.63 not in the banquet. 00:10:39.67\00:10:41.00 "Now the queen by reason of the words in the king and" 00:10:41.04\00:10:43.54 "his lords come into the banquet house. " 00:10:43.57\00:10:45.51 So it appears that she was not under the influence of 00:10:45.54\00:10:48.64 these drugs of alcohol and the party atmosphere. 00:10:48.68\00:10:51.65 She was not a part of that so she can still recollect, 00:10:51.68\00:10:55.18 she's still can remember, she can pinpoint to the king this 00:10:55.22\00:10:59.32 man named Daniel, when the king is out of his senses, 00:10:59.35\00:11:02.29 he has lost his senses. 00:11:02.32\00:11:03.66 He knows about Daniel, he knows the history but he has 00:11:03.69\00:11:06.16 forgotten, and this is the influence drugs 00:11:06.19\00:11:07.86 can have upon us. 00:11:07.86\00:11:09.20 He has forgotten about everything that God has wrought. 00:11:09.23\00:11:10.93 He is forgot everything that God has done. 00:11:11.00\00:11:12.33 He should know, but he doesn't know. 00:11:12.37\00:11:14.10 I love the way she identifies Daniel. 00:11:14.14\00:11:15.94 He has identified by the same terminology repeatedly 00:11:15.97\00:11:19.24 throughout the story with Nebuchadnezzar 00:11:19.27\00:11:21.54 and now with Belshazzar. 00:11:21.58\00:11:23.11 This is the one in whom is the Spirit of the holy God. 00:11:23.14\00:11:28.02 Wouldn't that be a incredible if in our daily lives and 00:11:28.05\00:11:32.85 our interactions with people who don't know and 00:11:32.89\00:11:36.42 necessarily believe in the Lord, wouldn't it be great 00:11:36.46\00:11:39.86 if we were living in such a way, with integrity, 00:11:39.89\00:11:43.97 as Daniel did, purposing in our hearts not to 00:11:44.00\00:11:48.07 defile ourselves, as Daniel purposed in his heart, 00:11:48.10\00:11:50.51 but walking in integrity. 00:11:50.54\00:11:52.07 Not just walk in integrity in any haughty religious, 00:11:52.11\00:11:56.51 spiritually superior sense because we have seen in 00:11:56.54\00:12:00.92 previous studies James, Daniel is a humble man who is 00:12:00.95\00:12:04.52 not filled with resentment and bitterness for the fact 00:12:04.55\00:12:08.06 that he has been taken as a slave into Babylon. 00:12:08.09\00:12:11.33 Then he was made a Eunuch, made to serve the king. 00:12:11.36\00:12:15.13 Daniel, in the first time we encounter his response 00:12:15.16\00:12:18.80 to his enemies, is Lord don't destroy the wise men. 00:12:18.87\00:12:22.07 King Nebuchadnezzar don't destroy the wise men. 00:12:22.10\00:12:25.24 Then again later on he is concerned that Nebuchadnezzar 00:12:25.27\00:12:29.21 see the truth but at the same time he is reluctant to 00:12:29.24\00:12:32.35 tell him the whole truth because he knows it is not 00:12:32.38\00:12:35.42 what Nebuchadnezzar wants to hear. 00:12:35.45\00:12:37.65 Here Daniel has built a reputation. 00:12:37.69\00:12:39.82 His reputation is, this is the one in whom, 00:12:39.85\00:12:42.59 this is a man in whom is the Spirit of the holy God. 00:12:42.62\00:12:45.49 Verse 12, "for as much as an excellent spirit. " 00:12:45.53\00:12:47.83 An excellent spirit, What is an excellent spirit? 00:12:47.86\00:12:50.07 Each just far surpasses the spirit of a normal person. 00:12:50.10\00:12:53.64 "And knowledge, and understanding, interpreting" 00:12:53.67\00:12:55.80 "of dreams, and showing of hard sentences, and dissolving " 00:12:55.84\00:12:59.01 "of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king" 00:12:59.04\00:13:02.24 "named Belshazzar: now let Daniel be called," 00:13:02.28\00:13:05.21 "and he will show the interpretation. " 00:13:05.28\00:13:07.42 I love that, this woman is speaking as someone who is 00:13:07.45\00:13:10.65 convicted, someone who believes 00:13:10.69\00:13:12.49 in Daniel, believes in Daniel's 00:13:12.52\00:13:14.42 God and perhaps that is why she 00:13:14.49\00:13:16.12 was not part of this banquet. 00:13:16.16\00:13:17.76 Part of this party, part of coming under the influence 00:13:17.79\00:13:21.26 of these lords and these rulers who were under the influence 00:13:21.33\00:13:24.80 of alcohol and worshiping the gods of gold and silver 00:13:24.83\00:13:27.27 and brass and iron and wood and stone. 00:13:27.30\00:13:29.10 They cannot see, they cannot hear, and of course we do 00:13:29.14\00:13:33.07 the same today, we worship gold and idols, and worship silver. 00:13:33.11\00:13:36.24 We worship metal, we worship our cars, we worship our 00:13:36.31\00:13:39.21 Oscars and worship our trophies, all the things of this world. 00:13:39.25\00:13:43.05 The sports and the celebrities and technology and in 00:13:43.08\00:13:47.42 a sense we are just out of our senses as was Belshazzar 00:13:47.49\00:13:51.79 and his lords and his princes. 00:13:51.83\00:13:53.60 But this woman is within reason. 00:13:53.63\00:13:55.26 She has got her senses about her 00:13:55.30\00:13:56.90 She is intelligent and she is thinking, she is seeing Spirit, 00:13:56.93\00:14:00.44 she is seeing what is in Daniel and the true 00:14:00.47\00:14:03.44 understanding and knowledge and so she is separated 00:14:03.47\00:14:05.97 from the banquet and she is now trying to bring Belshazzar to 00:14:06.01\00:14:09.04 understand and to seek for this man named Daniel. 00:14:09.08\00:14:11.95 There is another lesson here James, that all of us need 00:14:12.01\00:14:14.32 to consider and that is if we conduct ourselves in 00:14:14.38\00:14:18.79 integrity and in mercy, even though we are believers, 00:14:18.82\00:14:23.22 all of us are surrounded with people who don't 00:14:23.26\00:14:25.83 necessarily believe. 00:14:25.86\00:14:27.20 Wouldn't it be great, if when they come to a time of need, 00:14:27.23\00:14:31.03 when they realize their need for the Lord, 00:14:31.07\00:14:33.74 that they would immediately think to call upon that 00:14:33.77\00:14:37.64 individual, that person, this individual, 00:14:37.67\00:14:40.78 because there is an excellent spirit in them and we 00:14:40.81\00:14:43.51 have witnessed in them something that attracts us. 00:14:43.55\00:14:46.48 We know they may have the answer and may be able to 00:14:46.51\00:14:49.45 direct us to the right source of 00:14:49.48\00:14:51.69 understanding and knowledge. 00:14:51.72\00:14:53.89 That is what we need friends, we need to conduct 00:14:53.92\00:14:56.89 ourselves in such a way, as believers, 00:14:56.93\00:14:59.76 that people know that they can turn to us in their times 00:14:59.79\00:15:03.16 of need and struggle and pain and don't need to be 00:15:03.23\00:15:06.50 afraid to turn to us for fear of condemnation. 00:15:06.53\00:15:10.04 As Chapter 5 of Daniel continues to unfold, 00:15:10.07\00:15:13.48 we are going to see that Belshazzar does not respond 00:15:13.51\00:15:17.28 in an appropriate way to the vision that God gives 00:15:17.31\00:15:21.02 to the hand writing on the wall. 00:15:21.08\00:15:22.52 We are going to see here also that God is good, 00:15:22.55\00:15:26.02 God is merciful and He continues to have a plan that 00:15:26.05\00:15:29.86 we want ourselves to play into. 00:15:29.89\00:15:31.79 So stay with us and we will be right back 00:15:31.86\00:15:33.56 in just a moment. 00:15:33.60\00:15:34.93
