Hello friends and welcome back to our study of Daniel 00:00:01.93\00:00:03.26 Chapter 4 and we are actually in verse 22. 00:00:03.30\00:00:05.10 Where Daniel makes this 00:00:05.13\00:00:06.47 declaration concerning this 00:00:06.50\00:00:07.84 dream and its interpretation 00:00:07.87\00:00:09.27 that Nebuchadnezzar has had. 00:00:09.34\00:00:10.67 "It is thou O King," we have seen here Ty, Daniel has been 00:00:10.71\00:00:15.71 reluctant to give the interpretation of this dream to 00:00:15.74\00:00:19.35 Nebuchadnezzar because he is wanting to reach the heart 00:00:19.38\00:00:22.02 of the King and he knows that it's going to be difficult 00:00:22.05\00:00:24.65 for the king to receive this assessment of himself. 00:00:24.69\00:00:27.72 He is going to be this mighty tree that is cut down by 00:00:27.76\00:00:30.66 his watchers, he is going to be a mighty kingdom that is 00:00:30.69\00:00:33.70 going to lose all of his respect and all in his honor for 00:00:33.73\00:00:36.43 seven years, he is going to be like a wild man eating 00:00:36.46\00:00:39.20 grass in the field. 00:00:39.23\00:00:41.54 So he is reluctant and at the same time he knows God wants 00:00:41.57\00:00:46.41 him to give the interpretation to Nebuchadnezzar. 00:00:46.44\00:00:48.81 This is the way that Nebuchadnezzar's heart and 00:00:48.88\00:00:51.18 life is going to be changed. 00:00:51.21\00:00:52.58 This is God's will for Nebuchadnezzar. 00:00:52.65\00:00:54.15 Daniel as a man of God and so Daniel is reluctantly 00:00:54.18\00:00:57.45 wanting to make sure that he follows through with 00:00:57.49\00:01:00.79 God's will. 00:01:00.82\00:01:02.16 Daniel tells him, reluctantly, but clearly and directly, 00:01:02.19\00:01:06.13 King Nebuchadnezzar the vision 00:01:06.16\00:01:08.43 you had of this great tree with 00:01:08.46\00:01:11.17 fruit and its branches reaching 00:01:11.20\00:01:13.80 out to shade the earth and all who are under it is going 00:01:13.84\00:01:16.91 to be cut down. 00:01:16.94\00:01:18.27 This is you, your kingdom is going to be cut down and 00:01:18.31\00:01:21.31 taken from you, but it is amazing that there is still, 00:01:21.38\00:01:25.58 here even a word of mercy and assurance to Nebuchadnezzar. 00:01:25.65\00:01:29.75 He says, but Nebuchadnezzar listen, God has an objective, 00:01:29.78\00:01:33.89 he has a goal for you. 00:01:33.92\00:01:35.49 He is leading you, you are a hard nut to crack 00:01:35.52\00:01:37.76 Nebuchadnezzar but God is reaching into your heart and 00:01:37.79\00:01:41.86 your kingdom will be assured to you when you come to the 00:01:41.90\00:01:45.97 realization that the most high God rules 00:01:46.00\00:01:50.01 in the affairs of men. 00:01:50.04\00:01:51.94 God is eager to reach your heart and He assures you 00:01:51.97\00:01:54.84 the kingdom after you have gone through this experience. 00:01:54.88\00:01:57.15 It is amazing that Daniel, then, actually reaches 00:01:57.18\00:02:01.55 further and says, Nebuchadnezzar listen, 00:02:01.58\00:02:04.49 I have some counsel for you. 00:02:04.52\00:02:05.99 Here's what I want you to do. 00:02:06.05\00:02:07.46 I want you to listen carefully Nebuchadnezzar, 00:02:07.49\00:02:09.92 this is what you need to do, 00:02:09.96\00:02:11.29 verse 27, "you need to break off your sins by righteous 00:02:11.33\00:02:15.03 living and break off your iniquities by showing mercy 00:02:15.06\00:02:19.43 to the poor, perhaps there may be a lengthening of 00:02:19.47\00:02:23.81 your prosperity. " 00:02:23.84\00:02:26.14 Daniel doesn't want to Nebuchadnezzar to experience 00:02:26.17\00:02:28.41 this horrific judgment that the dream says is going to come 00:02:28.44\00:02:32.91 upon him and he is given good council here. 00:02:32.95\00:02:35.05 Come to your senses. 00:02:35.12\00:02:36.45 In fact he is getting council that is the exact opposite 00:02:36.48\00:02:39.12 of what it means to live in pride. 00:02:39.15\00:02:41.09 Pride lives for self. 00:02:41.12\00:02:42.62 Pride glorifies self. 00:02:42.66\00:02:44.06 Pride embellishes self. 00:02:44.09\00:02:45.43 Pride builds up and strengthens self's kingdom. 00:02:45.46\00:02:48.40 What happens when you live for self, and you embellished 00:02:48.43\00:02:51.90 self is that you neglect others. 00:02:51.93\00:02:53.27 Specifically, as the king you neglect the poor. 00:02:53.30\00:02:55.87 He has, in order to embellish and lift up and exalt himself, 00:02:55.90\00:02:59.94 he has neglected to take care of the poor and needy 00:03:00.04\00:03:02.31 that are around him in the world. 00:03:02.34\00:03:03.68 So basically what Daniel is saying is that Nebuchadnezzar 00:03:03.71\00:03:06.92 is the problem, your pride has made you selfish. 00:03:06.98\00:03:10.69 Selfishness is the essence of sin. 00:03:10.72\00:03:13.59 You can break away from the selfishness by extending 00:03:13.66\00:03:17.39 mercy to those around you. 00:03:17.43\00:03:18.79 And he does, it seems like it works for awhile. 00:03:18.83\00:03:21.10 Nebuchadnezzar for a year lives in tranquility and it 00:03:21.13\00:03:25.00 seems like he follows Daniel's advice, Daniels council. 00:03:25.03\00:03:29.00 To some degree, but then there is obviously a very clear 00:03:29.04\00:03:32.77 indication that even to this point, after receiving his 00:03:32.81\00:03:36.51 second vision, clear interpretations from Daniel, 00:03:36.54\00:03:39.71 God's prophet, but still Nebuchadnezzar is not converted 00:03:39.75\00:03:44.15 at the depths of his heart and he says in verse 30. 00:03:44.19\00:03:46.96 He is walking around, it is like a year later after 00:03:46.99\00:03:49.76 receiving the vision and the interpretation. 00:03:49.79\00:03:51.66 "The king spoke and he said is not this great Babylon 00:03:51.69\00:03:56.67 that I have built for a royal dwelling, by my mighty power, 00:03:56.70\00:04:02.07 and for the honor of my Majesty?" 00:04:02.10\00:04:04.21 Isn't that what is going on here? 00:04:04.24\00:04:06.27 Isn't that what he is thinking in his mind? 00:04:06.31\00:04:07.64 I did this and I am it, I'm the king and I did all of 00:04:07.68\00:04:11.85 this for my glory. 00:04:11.88\00:04:13.21 This is a clear verification that God's method is the best 00:04:13.25\00:04:15.78 method to reach Nebuchadnezzar. 00:04:15.82\00:04:17.25 God has given Nebuchadnezzar every opportunity. 00:04:17.29\00:04:19.62 He has given him dreams. 00:04:19.65\00:04:20.99 He has given him 00:04:21.02\00:04:22.36 interpretations, and been a 00:04:22.39\00:04:23.73 witness to him through his 00:04:23.76\00:04:25.09 faithful followers. 00:04:25.13\00:04:26.46 This is a year transition 00:04:26.49\00:04:27.83 between the time he has interpreted the dream and the 00:04:27.86\00:04:30.90 time comes upon him is a perfect confirmation and 00:04:30.93\00:04:34.60 verification that God's method is the best 00:04:34.67\00:04:36.27 to reach Nebuchadnezzar. 00:04:36.34\00:04:37.67 Nothing else is working. 00:04:37.71\00:04:39.04 So this tells us that the best thing that can happen to 00:04:39.07\00:04:41.08 Nebuchadnezzar right now, which Nebuchadnezzar himself 00:04:41.11\00:04:44.45 testifies of in this entire Chapter, is that God's will 00:04:44.48\00:04:47.38 will be carried out and that he will lose this kingdom, 00:04:47.42\00:04:50.32 even his sense. 00:04:50.35\00:04:51.82 He will become like a wild man, actually the psychiatrists 00:04:51.85\00:04:54.59 have a term for this syndrome that 00:04:54.62\00:04:58.16 happen to Nebuchadnezzar. 00:04:58.19\00:04:59.56 What happened in ancient times where men and women that would 00:04:59.63\00:05:03.06 live very close to their wild stock, their animals. 00:05:03.10\00:05:06.27 At times they would have what was called a Wild Man Syndrome, 00:05:06.30\00:05:09.94 Wild Ox Syndrome. 00:05:09.97\00:05:11.77 They would become like animals. 00:05:11.81\00:05:13.64 They are thinking that this is probably what God allowed 00:05:13.68\00:05:17.21 to happen to Nebuchadnezzar, he became like an ox. 00:05:17.25\00:05:20.05 He lost his sense, he lost his ability to rule. 00:05:20.08\00:05:22.82 Everyone forsook him, everyone left him, 00:05:22.85\00:05:25.99 he was eating grass, he was crazy, 00:05:26.02\00:05:27.92 he wasn't taking care of himself. 00:05:27.96\00:05:29.82 He wasn't cutting his hair, and wasn't cleaning his nails. 00:05:29.86\00:05:32.06 He wasn't doing anything, everyone left him Ty, 00:05:32.09\00:05:34.60 except for one person. 00:05:34.63\00:05:35.96 The band around the tree tells us that when everyone 00:05:36.00\00:05:38.93 else leaves us, God is still there. 00:05:38.97\00:05:41.34 "God never leaves us," Hebrews 13:5, and He never forsake us. 00:05:41.37\00:05:45.31 God was with Nebuchadnezzar. 00:05:45.34\00:05:46.71 As we pointed out in previous programs on the book of 00:05:46.74\00:05:49.11 Daniel, even though the 00:05:49.14\00:05:51.08 book of Daniel is generally 00:05:51.11\00:05:52.75 thought of as a book of end 00:05:52.78\00:05:54.32 time prophecies and that's there 00:05:54.35\00:05:56.75 and it is a vital truth. 00:05:56.79\00:05:58.12 There is something else happening in the book of Daniel. 00:05:58.15\00:06:00.39 That is the story of God relentlessly pursuing king 00:06:00.46\00:06:06.66 Nebuchadnezzar to bring him to Himself 00:06:06.70\00:06:09.20 and eternal salvation. 00:06:09.23\00:06:10.57 It is amazing that this God of heaven has such and eye 00:06:10.60\00:06:14.30 of singular mercy for Nebuchadnezzar. 00:06:14.34\00:06:18.47 He is focused on this king and bringing him to Himself. 00:06:18.51\00:06:21.14 I love it because as he goes through this great trial, 00:06:21.21\00:06:25.08 as all of his lords and even his family leave him. 00:06:25.11\00:06:28.58 It says at the end of verse 34, "and at the end of 00:06:28.62\00:06:32.02 the days, I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up my 00:06:32.05\00:06:35.52 eyes unto heaven. " 00:06:35.56\00:06:37.19 It doesn't matter who we are, it doesn't matter where we 00:06:37.23\00:06:39.09 are, doesn't matter what we have been through, 00:06:39.13\00:06:42.43 if we lift our eyes up to heaven, heaven responds. 00:06:42.50\00:06:45.93 God responds and as Nebuchadnezzar lifted up his 00:06:45.97\00:06:49.37 eyes to heaven, in that moment it says, 00:06:49.40\00:06:51.14 "his understanding returned to him and he blessed the" 00:06:51.17\00:06:54.34 "Most High, and he praised and honored Him that lives" 00:06:54.38\00:06:57.11 "for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion" 00:06:57.15\00:06:59.75 "and His kingdom is from generation to generation:" 00:06:59.78\00:07:02.52 Instantaneous here, Nebuchadnezzar turns to God, 00:07:02.58\00:07:05.65 he lifts his eyes to God and praises and blesses God 00:07:05.69\00:07:08.82 because God brings a return of his understanding. 00:07:08.86\00:07:12.73 We see here that self-centeredness and arrogance, 00:07:12.76\00:07:16.97 and self exaltation is the precursor to insanity. 00:07:17.00\00:07:20.37 It has really, as you said, the essence of the sin 00:07:20.40\00:07:23.74 problem, self-centeredness is. 00:07:23.77\00:07:26.07 Then we see that the moment that Nebuchadnezzar turns 00:07:26.11\00:07:30.21 his heart to the Lord and exalt the God of heaven, 00:07:30.25\00:07:34.35 his sanity returns to him. 00:07:34.38\00:07:35.95 He is in his right mind again after seven years, 00:07:35.98\00:07:39.82 seven years of living in this very low, horrible 00:07:39.85\00:07:43.63 state of mind. 00:07:43.66\00:07:44.99 With no doubt self-incrimination and guilt driving him 00:07:45.03\00:07:50.00 to insanity, the moment Nebuchadnezzar lifts up his eyes 00:07:50.03\00:07:55.00 to the God of heaven, his sanity returns to him and 00:07:55.04\00:07:58.07 this is what sanity looks like, James. 00:07:58.11\00:07:59.91 Sanity is a recognition of God's position in our life, 00:07:59.94\00:08:06.15 and in the universe as the Most High God. 00:08:06.18\00:08:09.35 The one who's kingdom is eternal and will go on 00:08:09.38\00:08:12.12 and on for ever. 00:08:12.15\00:08:13.49 We are, as it were, nothing by comparison to God and 00:08:13.52\00:08:17.53 yet when we find refuge in Him, He lifts us up to all 00:08:17.56\00:08:21.96 that we truly should be and can be. 00:08:22.00\00:08:24.17 What is really interesting about this is 00:08:24.20\00:08:26.74 Nebuchadnezzar had this transformation, he 00:08:26.77\00:08:29.24 recognizes what is significant and what is secondary. 00:08:29.27\00:08:32.61 What he does in verse 35 is he makes this declaration, 00:08:32.64\00:08:35.31 that is powerful and important for us today, he says. 00:08:35.34\00:08:37.88 "And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as 00:08:37.91\00:08:40.62 nothing: and he does according to his will in the army 00:08:40.65\00:08:43.22 of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and 00:08:43.25\00:08:45.79 none can stop his hand, or say unto him, 00:08:45.85\00:08:49.56 "What are you doing?" 00:08:49.59\00:08:50.93 Now it is really important for us to understand what 00:08:50.96\00:08:53.23 is going on here. 00:08:53.29\00:08:54.60 Nebuchadnezzar is prioritizing what is most 00:08:54.63\00:08:56.83 important and secondary. 00:08:56.87\00:08:58.27 Before this conversion, what was most important was his 00:08:58.30\00:09:01.80 kingdom, his lords, his counselors, his position in 00:09:01.84\00:09:05.21 society, his influence politically, and his kingship. 00:09:05.24\00:09:08.14 Now what is important is his relationship with God. 00:09:08.18\00:09:11.05 Everything else is secondary. 00:09:11.08\00:09:12.65 Everything else is reputed is nothing 00:09:12.68\00:09:14.18 in comparison to that. 00:09:14.25\00:09:15.58 Once you have a right relationship with God, 00:09:15.62\00:09:18.65 Nebuchadnezzar is saying, once you're understanding 00:09:18.69\00:09:21.62 returns and you recognize and bless and praise God, 00:09:21.66\00:09:25.06 first and foremost, all this other stuff is secondary. 00:09:25.09\00:09:28.33 And it comes, verse 36, "at the same time my reason 00:09:28.36\00:09:31.17 returned to me; and for the glory of my kingdom, 00:09:31.23\00:09:33.44 mine honor and brightness returned unto me; 00:09:33.47\00:09:35.60 and my counselors and my lords sought unto me; 00:09:35.64\00:09:37.71 and I was established in my kingdom, 00:09:37.74\00:09:39.17 and excellent Majesty was added unto me. " 00:09:39.21\00:09:40.58 All of that as a place, but it is all secondary. 00:09:40.61\00:09:43.38 What we do in this life often 00:09:43.41\00:09:45.41 is we make all that first. 00:09:45.45\00:09:47.65 Our influence, our position, 00:09:47.68\00:09:49.82 our economic status all 00:09:49.88\00:09:52.59 comes before God. 00:09:52.62\00:09:54.32 This is what Nebuchadnezzar was doing. 00:09:54.36\00:09:55.69 Ultimately, when we do that we neglect the real issues 00:09:55.72\00:09:58.49 of life, taking care of other people and putting other 00:09:58.53\00:10:01.23 people first, and we become 00:10:01.26\00:10:03.73 first. This is what Nebuchadnezzar is going through, 00:10:03.80\00:10:05.53 this incredible transformation in his priorities of 00:10:05.60\00:10:10.94 God and other people. 00:10:10.97\00:10:12.64 I think of what Jesus had 00:10:12.67\00:10:14.48 to say to all of us, in 00:10:14.51\00:10:16.88 Matthew 6:33, putting our 00:10:16.91\00:10:18.75 priorities in order, "seek ye 00:10:18.78\00:10:21.05 first the kingdom of God. " 00:10:21.08\00:10:23.25 That is first in priorities, first in focus, "seek ye 00:10:23.28\00:10:26.62 first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and 00:10:26.65\00:10:29.96 all these things shall be added unto you. " 00:10:29.99\00:10:32.63 All these things, that Jesus was referring to, 00:10:32.66\00:10:35.33 was the material blessings of life. 00:10:35.36\00:10:38.37 These material blessings are secondary, and that's in 00:10:38.40\00:10:42.10 God's power to provide and we need to leave that to His 00:10:42.14\00:10:46.41 charge and put our focus on living for God and seeking 00:10:46.44\00:10:50.68 His righteousness. 00:10:50.75\00:10:52.08 That is a faith venture, I mean that is a faith venture 00:10:52.11\00:10:54.72 to be able to lay aside because we need these things 00:10:54.75\00:10:57.59 that we have in life to survive, to sustain us. 00:10:57.62\00:11:00.39 We need these things if we have a family, if we have 00:11:00.42\00:11:02.66 children, we need clothes, we need food. 00:11:02.69\00:11:04.79 It is a faith venture to say I am going to make that 00:11:04.83\00:11:07.03 secondary and I'm going to put God first. 00:11:07.10\00:11:08.93 What happens if you don't do that is those things will 00:11:08.96\00:11:11.20 consume you and God will be nowhere to be found. 00:11:11.27\00:11:14.74 Then he asks this question, in verse 35. 00:11:14.77\00:11:17.07 "No one can say to God, What are you doing?" 00:11:17.11\00:11:19.34 Now don't misunderstand that friends, we can ask God 00:11:19.37\00:11:22.01 what He is doing, many times we do ask God, 00:11:22.04\00:11:23.91 What are you doing? Why did this happen to me? 00:11:23.95\00:11:25.75 I don't get it! 00:11:25.78\00:11:27.12 God doesn't mind us asking the question, but when we 00:11:27.15\00:11:29.28 understand who God is, when we understand His character, 00:11:29.32\00:11:32.05 when we understand that He is long-suffering not willing 00:11:32.09\00:11:34.59 that any should perish but all will come to repentance. 00:11:34.62\00:11:38.86 Then the question is one that is not necessary, because God's 00:11:38.89\00:11:43.03 reply to that question to us is, I am moving heaven and earth, 00:11:43.06\00:11:46.63 I am doing everything I can to save you. 00:11:46.67\00:11:48.64 To get you into the kingdom and be with 00:11:48.70\00:11:50.64 Me for all eternity. 00:11:50.67\00:11:52.01 Then we come to the same conclusion that Nebuchadnezzar 00:11:52.04\00:11:55.74 came to and, that is, that all God's ways are justice, 00:11:55.78\00:11:59.85 His works are truth. 00:11:59.88\00:12:01.78 The context here, Nebuchadnezzar is realizing that 00:12:01.82\00:12:04.75 even though his experience has been painful at times, 00:12:04.79\00:12:07.69 that God has had his best interest at heart. 00:12:07.72\00:12:11.09 Through all that he has been through, God was doing 00:12:11.13\00:12:14.40 what was right, and best, and true for Nebuchadnezzar, 00:12:14.46\00:12:17.90 to bring him to the Lord God of heaven and to worship 00:12:17.93\00:12:21.40 the Creator of heaven and earth, 00:12:21.44\00:12:23.87 and to yield his life to Him. 00:12:23.91\00:12:26.24 That is what God is seeking to work out in your life, 00:12:26.27\00:12:28.74 my friend, and my life, through all the experiences 00:12:28.78\00:12:31.21 that we have. 00:12:31.28\00:12:32.61 We are looking forward to studying with you again. 00:12:32.65\00:12:33.98 Thank you and God bless. 00:12:34.02\00:12:36.62
