Hello friends! 00:00:21.05\00:00:22.68 Welcome to Books of the Book. 00:00:22.72\00:00:24.05 I'm Ty Gibson and we are 00:00:24.09\00:00:25.42 presently engaged in a study of 00:00:25.45\00:00:27.12 the book of Daniel and with me is my co-host 00:00:27.16\00:00:29.49 James Rafferty. 00:00:29.56\00:00:30.89 So we are in Daniel Chapter 4 00:00:30.93\00:00:32.26 and it is incredible when you 00:00:32.29\00:00:34.30 look at Daniel 4 because the 00:00:34.36\00:00:36.40 book of Daniel, written by Daniel the prophet and believer. 00:00:36.46\00:00:39.13 A man who was connected with God with the exception of 00:00:39.17\00:00:43.04 Daniel Chapter 4 because Daniel Chapter 4 shows us that 00:00:43.07\00:00:46.24 God has an interest in every one, even if they aren't the 00:00:46.27\00:00:49.41 most ardent believer or follower of the Lord. 00:00:49.44\00:00:52.18 Everyone who has a radical conversion experience with God. 00:00:52.21\00:00:56.12 Daniel Chapter 4 was written by Nebuchadnezzar. 00:00:56.15\00:00:59.72 It is a testimony of his experience, his relationship 00:00:59.79\00:01:03.36 with God, and how God has worked in his life. 00:01:03.43\00:01:05.89 God has allowed Nebuchadnezzar to give this testimony as 00:01:05.93\00:01:09.80 part of this prophetic book of Daniel. 00:01:09.83\00:01:11.77 It's incredible, yes it's phenomenal because as we know 00:01:11.80\00:01:15.57 Peters says that holy men of old spake as they were moved 00:01:15.60\00:01:19.34 by the Holy Spirit. 00:01:19.37\00:01:20.81 The Holy Spirit inspires prophets and they are 00:01:20.84\00:01:23.61 called holy men. 00:01:23.65\00:01:24.98 Here we have a section of Scripture that is written by 00:01:25.01\00:01:29.42 none other than Nebuchadnezzar. 00:01:29.45\00:01:30.79 We need to give a little bit of background here so that 00:01:30.82\00:01:33.22 we remember who this is we are dealing with. 00:01:33.25\00:01:35.56 Nebuchadnezzar is a despotic dictator. 00:01:35.59\00:01:39.16 He is responsible for taking God's people captive and 00:01:39.23\00:01:43.67 enslaving them. 00:01:43.70\00:01:45.03 He has a horrific career record as a mass murderer and has 00:01:45.07\00:01:52.51 and performed a genocide no doubt. 00:01:52.54\00:01:53.88 He has moved into villages and countries and this man is 00:01:53.91\00:01:57.38 no one you would expect to be penning inspired 00:01:57.41\00:02:01.22 words in Scripture, yet right here in Chapter 4 we have 00:02:01.25\00:02:04.75 the testimony of King Nebuchadnezzar chronicling his 00:02:04.79\00:02:08.22 radical conversion. 00:02:08.29\00:02:09.79 You might not even think that Nebuchadnezzar would be 00:02:09.82\00:02:11.53 saved in heaven unless you would read this testimony 00:02:11.59\00:02:14.83 which is probably possibly why God has in His providence 00:02:14.93\00:02:18.13 allow this testimony to be part of the inspired Scripture. 00:02:18.17\00:02:21.37 But listen to this, Daniel Chapter 4 and verse 1, 00:02:21.40\00:02:24.54 listen to Nebuchadnezzar. 00:02:24.61\00:02:25.94 "Nebuchadnezzar, the king, unto all people, nations, and 00:02:25.97\00:02:29.54 "languages that do well on all the earth," 00:02:29.58\00:02:30.95 "peace be multiplied unto you." 00:02:30.98\00:02:33.45 That sounds like Paul. 00:02:33.48\00:02:34.82 That sounds like New Testament introduction to one 00:02:34.85\00:02:38.02 of Paul's epistles. 00:02:38.05\00:02:39.39 This is a changed man, this is a converted man and do you 00:02:39.42\00:02:42.19 know why this is a converted man? 00:02:42.22\00:02:43.93 Because the testimony of Nebuchadnezzar is, I wanted to 00:02:43.99\00:02:47.96 tell you how good God is, how great God is. 00:02:47.96\00:02:49.83 He made me into a wild man and I went for seven years 00:02:49.86\00:02:53.54 eating grass while my hair grew as Eagle feathers and my 00:02:53.57\00:02:57.24 nails grew as Eagle's claws. 00:02:57.27\00:02:58.61 Isn't God good! 00:02:58.64\00:03:00.14 Yeah, it's amazing. 00:03:00.18\00:03:01.64 In other words, it takes a converted man to go through 00:03:01.71\00:03:04.85 such a horrendous trial and come out saying God is good. 00:03:04.88\00:03:08.55 We know was a horrendous trial because down in verse 4, 00:03:08.58\00:03:12.32 he says I at rest in my house and flourishing in my 00:03:12.35\00:03:16.02 palace, this guy had everything. 00:03:16.06\00:03:18.69 He was surrounded with opulence. 00:03:18.73\00:03:21.26 He could indulge himself in any earthly pleasures. 00:03:21.30\00:03:24.87 He was the king and yet he is praising God for taking him 00:03:24.90\00:03:30.61 out of that situation and by His divine providence 00:03:30.64\00:03:34.24 thrusting Nebuchadnezzar into a very terrible trial, 00:03:34.28\00:03:37.85 obviously, Nebuchadnezzar literally lost his mind. 00:03:37.88\00:03:40.98 He went insane according to his own testimony here. 00:03:41.02\00:03:44.35 Nebuchadnezzar somehow is able to look upon this 00:03:44.39\00:03:47.62 experience and praise God because he knows that through 00:03:47.69\00:03:51.36 this experience God has reached his heart and brought 00:03:51.39\00:03:55.00 him to an understanding of the truth. 00:03:55.03\00:03:57.00 He knows that God has taken him out of a false security. 00:03:57.03\00:03:59.87 And earthly security, a security that is dependent on 00:03:59.90\00:04:02.77 earthly powers or an earthly 00:04:02.80\00:04:04.57 wealth which is all going to 00:04:04.61\00:04:06.27 vanish, he knows that God has 00:04:06.31\00:04:07.94 removed him. 00:04:07.98\00:04:09.31 The reason why he is so incredibly impressed by what God 00:04:09.34\00:04:12.85 has done is because Nebuchadnezzar understands 00:04:12.88\00:04:15.45 the pride of his own heart. 00:04:15.48\00:04:16.82 This whole chapter deals with pride and it ends with 00:04:16.85\00:04:20.49 this testimony that Nebuchadnezzar gives a 00:04:20.52\00:04:23.36 summation of his testimony and basically says those who walk 00:04:23.39\00:04:25.39 in pride He's able to abase. 00:04:25.43\00:04:26.93 Nebuchadnezzar realizes looking back that he, 00:04:26.96\00:04:29.56 even though he was at rest, even though he was 00:04:29.60\00:04:32.17 flourishing, he was in a false security, that is what 00:04:32.20\00:04:34.80 we see in the world today. 00:04:34.84\00:04:36.17 Many especially in the Western countries, we see people 00:04:36.20\00:04:38.54 who are resting in a false security and one day that 00:04:38.57\00:04:41.21 security will be broken. 00:04:41.24\00:04:42.81 It will be diminished, it will be gone and there will 00:04:42.88\00:04:44.98 be nothing left. 00:04:45.05\00:04:46.38 God is seeking to reach us right now and say the things 00:04:46.41\00:04:49.55 you find security in today are meaningless in the end. 00:04:49.58\00:04:52.79 Absolutely, absolutely! If you think about it, 00:04:52.82\00:04:55.02 the average Westerner in 00:04:55.06\00:04:58.46 our world today lives at a 00:04:58.49\00:05:01.13 lifestyle level that might not be too much behind 00:05:01.16\00:05:06.47 Nebuchadnezzar at peace in his house, flourishing in his palace 00:05:06.50\00:05:10.91 We are surrounded with every provision we could possibly 00:05:10.94\00:05:15.44 imagine, we probably have available to us some of 00:05:15.48\00:05:19.31 the amenities of life that Nebuchadnezzar in his time 00:05:19.35\00:05:23.15 didn't even have in his palace. 00:05:23.18\00:05:25.85 The fact is that we are at rest in our houses. 00:05:25.89\00:05:29.79 We are at ease in our little palaces, our little worlds 00:05:29.82\00:05:34.86 in which we do not feel our need of God. 00:05:34.93\00:05:37.73 We do not feel our need of His grace. 00:05:37.77\00:05:40.54 The fact is James though, if we think about this we are 00:05:40.57\00:05:44.54 reading the testimony here in Daniel 4, of a despotic 00:05:44.57\00:05:48.51 ruler, we look upon him, and we think of some of the 00:05:48.54\00:05:50.48 horrible atrocities that he committed in his lifetime. 00:05:50.51\00:05:54.65 But from God's perspective, really there isn't this 00:05:54.68\00:06:00.09 great distinction between sinners. 00:06:00.16\00:06:03.12 The fact is, all have sinned and fallen short of 00:06:03.16\00:06:05.93 the glory of God. 00:06:05.96\00:06:07.30 Nebuchadnezzar reveals to us a carnality and a 00:06:07.30\00:06:11.63 wickedness that is the potential of all of our hearts. 00:06:11.67\00:06:15.24 If left to ourselves, apart from the grace of God, 00:06:15.27\00:06:18.24 there is not a one of us as human beings who would not 00:06:18.27\00:06:21.44 engage in the same kinds of things that Nebuchadnezzar 00:06:21.48\00:06:25.11 engaged in as this despotic ruler filled with arrogance 00:06:25.15\00:06:28.78 and pride. 00:06:28.82\00:06:30.15 He had an inflated sense of himself, and we too, as sinners 00:06:30.19\00:06:33.22 have an inflated sense of ourselves in our little worlds. 00:06:33.25\00:06:35.89 We just don't have the kind of power necessarily 00:06:35.92\00:06:39.23 that he had at his disposal, but we are all sinners in 00:06:39.26\00:06:42.46 need of this radical kind of conversion. 00:06:42.50\00:06:44.50 It's true you know, it's fallen human nature to categorize sin 00:06:44.53\00:06:47.47 to make ourselves out to be better than somebody else. 00:06:47.50\00:06:50.41 Put these different categories that God does not see. 00:06:50.47\00:06:53.31 That's what I think is really profound that Nebuchadnezzar 00:06:53.34\00:06:56.68 is giving a statement here in verse 1, "to all people," 00:06:56.71\00:06:59.81 "Nations and languages that dwell on all the earth. " 00:06:59.88\00:07:02.92 I think what he is saying is, because we categorize sin 00:07:02.98\00:07:05.82 and because we see certain people as worse than others, 00:07:05.85\00:07:09.46 Nebuchadnezzar is probably seen as the worse of all. 00:07:09.49\00:07:13.60 The fact that he is filled with pride, there is no way 00:07:13.63\00:07:17.63 a nice man can get to the position he is in, 00:07:17.67\00:07:19.53 and of course he doesn't pretend to be nice, 00:07:19.57\00:07:21.44 in any sense of the word up unto this time. 00:07:21.47\00:07:23.24 Even Daniel was made a Eunuch by Nebuchadnezzar, 00:07:23.27\00:07:26.21 everyone was to serve Nebuchadnezzar's purpose. 00:07:26.24\00:07:28.58 If they couldn't serve his purpose they died. 00:07:28.61\00:07:30.88 In that context Nebuchadnezzar is saying, in essence, 00:07:30.91\00:07:34.42 I want all the world to know that if God can save me, 00:07:34.45\00:07:37.95 He can save you. 00:07:37.99\00:07:39.32 There is another lesson here James, in the fact that 00:07:39.35\00:07:41.99 Nebuchadnezzar is addressing all peoples, nations, 00:07:42.02\00:07:44.69 languages, that dwell 00:07:44.73\00:07:46.16 on the earth in verse 1. 00:07:46.19\00:07:47.50 He is sending out his testimony 00:07:47.56\00:07:49.56 in the form of a letter 00:07:49.60\00:07:50.93 obviously, all over the world. 00:07:50.97\00:07:53.00 The first impulse of a converted heart, I mean when we 00:07:53.03\00:07:57.71 really see our need and begin to receive the grace of God 00:07:57.74\00:08:02.48 that transformation that is wrought in our hearts, 00:08:02.51\00:08:06.72 causes to arise in us an impulse to bring others in 00:08:06.75\00:08:10.92 contact with the grace of God. 00:08:10.95\00:08:12.79 Nebuchadnezzar is eager for the whole world to become 00:08:12.85\00:08:17.96 aware of his encounter with the living God. 00:08:18.03\00:08:20.53 Amen, that is why this testimony so powerful, because, 00:08:20.56\00:08:23.67 he is making such a radical transformation. 00:08:23.70\00:08:26.80 He has such a powerful witness 00:08:26.84\00:08:29.30 to share that at his time and 00:08:29.34\00:08:31.54 his level it will have a major 00:08:31.57\00:08:33.71 affect, we do not know how many people will be in the kingdom 00:08:33.74\00:08:35.94 because of the testimony of Nebuchadnezzar. 00:08:35.98\00:08:38.51 We do know this, it's powerful. 00:08:38.55\00:08:39.88 overcome, not only by the blood of Jesus Christ, 00:08:44.35\00:08:46.12 but by the word of our testimony. 00:08:46.15\00:08:47.56 Not only do we not know how many people will be in the 00:08:47.59\00:08:49.99 kingdom because of Nebuchadnezzar's testimony, but 00:08:50.03\00:08:52.36 imagine James, what it is going to be like on resurrection 00:08:52.39\00:08:55.53 morning when Nebuchadnezzar is there among the redeemed? 00:08:55.56\00:08:58.70 Also, among the resurrected saints of all ages. 00:08:58.73\00:09:03.91 There will be those who Nebuchadnezzar was in fact, 00:09:03.94\00:09:08.41 the person who brought them into slavery and committed 00:09:08.44\00:09:12.15 horrible atrocities against them and took their lives. 00:09:12.18\00:09:16.62 They are going to be amazed, and absolutely gratified to 00:09:16.65\00:09:21.46 see that after that wicked man had taken their lives, 00:09:21.49\00:09:26.26 he was able to be reached by the grace of God. 00:09:26.33\00:09:29.86 There he is in God's eternal kingdom. 00:09:29.93\00:09:32.83 Amen, so Nebuchadnezzar is having this dream and this time 00:09:32.90\00:09:37.07 as he is troubled by it, verse 5, "I saw a dream which made me" 00:09:37.11\00:09:41.24 "afraid, and the thoughts upon my bed and the visions" 00:09:41.28\00:09:43.45 "of my head troubled me. " 00:09:43.48\00:09:44.81 He makes a decree this time to bring in all the wise men 00:09:44.85\00:09:47.05 but he doesn't threaten them with death. 00:09:47.08\00:09:48.62 So you notice a little bit of transition taking place 00:09:48.65\00:09:51.09 here in his thinking. 00:09:51.12\00:09:52.45 We have seen him, already have a dream, where he was very 00:09:52.49\00:09:55.79 angry and want all the wise men killed. 00:09:55.82\00:09:57.16 Then we saw him move from that, in his experience, that 00:09:57.19\00:10:00.80 intellectual conviction that this is truth and Daniel your 00:10:00.86\00:10:04.80 God is the God of gods, to actually see a witness of 00:10:04.87\00:10:09.17 the Son of Man with His people in the furnace. 00:10:09.24\00:10:12.17 We know that these two events really affected him 00:10:12.21\00:10:15.11 in a powerful way. 00:10:15.14\00:10:16.48 The truth and a witness of the truth. 00:10:16.51\00:10:18.48 Now, as he has his second dream, of a tree, a great tree, 00:10:18.51\00:10:22.68 that fills the whole earth and feeds and give shade to all 00:10:22.72\00:10:26.59 these animals, and basically, is a picture of his nation 00:10:26.62\00:10:31.03 as the provider for and the power that directs all of 00:10:31.06\00:10:35.40 these different nations. 00:10:35.43\00:10:36.87 He recognizes that God is ultimately showing him who He 00:10:36.90\00:10:40.97 is and what God has given to him. 00:10:41.00\00:10:42.34 He is a little bit mellower. 00:10:42.37\00:10:43.91 He brings in his astrologers and doesn't threaten them 00:10:43.94\00:10:47.51 with death, but he is still not completely directed to God 00:10:47.54\00:10:50.85 because he doesn't call Daniel in among these astrologers 00:10:50.88\00:10:54.15 and wise men. 00:10:54.18\00:10:55.52 He waits till the very last before he calls Daniel in. 00:10:55.55\00:10:58.75 I think he knows that when he calls Daniel in, he is going 00:10:58.79\00:11:02.36 to receive a clear understanding of the meaning of his 00:11:02.39\00:11:05.79 vision and he has a hunch, just like the previous vision, 00:11:05.83\00:11:09.16 that it is not necessarily going to be exactly what 00:11:09.20\00:11:12.10 he wants to hear. 00:11:12.13\00:11:13.47 He knows that if he calls Daniel in, it is 00:11:13.50\00:11:15.24 going to be the truth. 00:11:15.27\00:11:16.60 He senses that when he encounters the truth is going to 00:11:16.64\00:11:19.91 require something of him. 00:11:19.94\00:11:21.28 There is going to be responsibility involved, and so 00:11:21.31\00:11:24.55 Daniel is his last resort. 00:11:24.58\00:11:26.48 He has curiosity and wants to know the meaning of the 00:11:26.51\00:11:29.88 vision, but he knows that Daniel is truly a godly man 00:11:29.92\00:11:33.22 who will tell him the truth and no doubt a little 00:11:33.25\00:11:36.49 reluctance to hear the whole truth. 00:11:36.56\00:11:38.36 So he gives Daniel the basic dream and then he asks Daniel 00:11:38.39\00:11:42.46 to give him the interpretation. 00:11:42.50\00:11:44.00 It is interesting because it says in verse 19, 00:11:44.03\00:11:46.87 of Chapter 4, that when Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, 00:11:46.90\00:11:49.64 when Daniel received this dream from 00:11:49.67\00:11:51.64 Nebuchadnezzar, "he was astonished for one hour and the 00:11:51.67\00:11:56.44 thoughts of his head troubled him. " 00:11:56.48\00:11:59.25 "The king spoke to him and said don't let the dream," 00:11:59.28\00:12:02.35 "or the interpretation trouble you. " 00:12:02.38\00:12:04.09 Daniel answers, Belshazzar answers, my lord, 00:12:04.12\00:12:07.89 I really love this, "the dream be to them that hate thee" 00:12:07.92\00:12:11.79 "and the interpretation thereof to thine enemies. " 00:12:11.83\00:12:15.50 In other words, Daniel is reluctant to tell the king, the 00:12:15.53\00:12:20.14 interpretation of the dream. 00:12:20.17\00:12:21.50 Now, I really believe this is powerful. 00:12:21.54\00:12:23.14 This is a powerful witness or testimony of a 00:12:23.17\00:12:25.87 believer in God, because to often, 00:12:25.91\00:12:28.94 as followers of God, we don't have a reluctant 00:12:28.98\00:12:32.51 bone in our body. 00:12:32.55\00:12:34.18 We just want to tell it like it is and let the chips fall 00:12:34.38\00:12:36.95 where they may and if you can't handle the truth then 00:12:36.99\00:12:39.52 that's too bad sir. 00:12:39.55\00:12:40.89 We see here, in the character of Daniel, a spirit that is 00:12:40.92\00:12:43.26 different, we can see here a spirit that is concerned. 00:12:43.29\00:12:46.06 Now, if anyone had a reason to hold something against 00:12:46.13\00:12:48.83 Nebuchadnezzar, or a grudge 00:12:48.86\00:12:50.37 against Nebuchadnezzar it was 00:12:50.40\00:12:51.73 Daniel, he was the one that 00:12:51.77\00:12:53.10 was separated from his home, 00:12:53.13\00:12:54.47 from his family and made a 00:12:54.50\00:12:55.84 Eunuch, made to serve this king. 00:12:55.87\00:12:57.44 So Daniel, deep down in his heart, 00:12:57.47\00:12:59.94 has the spirit of Christ 00:13:00.04\00:13:01.61 and longs to reach the heart of the King and is 00:13:01.64\00:13:05.25 reluctant to share. 00:13:05.31\00:13:07.02 Now, I like this because this reluctance is combined with 00:13:07.05\00:13:10.79 Daniels ardent desire to obey his God. 00:13:10.82\00:13:15.19 To follow through with and share the truth. 00:13:15.22\00:13:17.46 This is what Christianity is all about. 00:13:17.49\00:13:19.66 It's about the spirit of Christ that possess a meekness 00:13:19.69\00:13:23.57 and an unwillingness to hurt people, to harm people. 00:13:23.60\00:13:27.47 To discourage people, but at the same time has a 00:13:27.50\00:13:30.94 truthfulness and honesty and integrity that wants 00:13:30.97\00:13:34.24 to honor God and do and obey exactly what God calls 00:13:34.28\00:13:37.51 us to do and say. 00:13:37.55\00:13:38.88 This is the same spirit that we witness in Jesus 00:13:38.91\00:13:41.85 when He said to His disciples, 00:13:41.88\00:13:44.02 "that there are many things that 00:13:44.05\00:13:46.15 I want to tell you but you 00:13:46.19\00:13:47.66 cannot bear them now. " 00:13:47.69\00:13:49.49 The truth was revealed to the disciples as they could 00:13:49.52\00:13:52.93 handle it, as they could bear it because the objective 00:13:52.96\00:13:56.10 of Christ's goal was to reach their hearts and bring 00:13:56.13\00:13:59.23 them to conversion. 00:13:59.27\00:14:00.74 Not merely to unload the truth concerning themselves and 00:14:00.77\00:14:05.31 to blow them away and hurt them and turn them away. 00:14:05.34\00:14:09.01 Daniel is governed by the same meekness of spirit. 00:14:09.04\00:14:12.61 He is not eager to bring before king Nebuchadnezzar the 00:14:12.68\00:14:16.22 things that will be painful and difficult for him to bear. 00:14:16.25\00:14:19.75 But he is eager for Nebuchadnezzar to receive the 00:14:19.79\00:14:23.26 truth and to be turned to the Lord, so he follows through 00:14:23.32\00:14:26.36 and does tell the truth about the matter. 00:14:26.39\00:14:30.07 It is extremely important for all of us to recognize that 00:14:30.10\00:14:33.70 it is possible, like Nebuchadnezzar, for us to merely 00:14:33.74\00:14:37.31 have an intellectual conversion friends. 00:14:37.34\00:14:39.34 Nebuchadnezzar was led finally to conversion of heart, 00:14:39.37\00:14:43.14 and that is what we are going to continue exploring as we 00:14:43.18\00:14:46.88 come back after the break. 00:14:46.92\00:14:48.25
