Welcome back to our study of 00:00:01.93\00:00:03.26 the book of Daniel. 00:00:03.30\00:00:04.63 We are in Chapter 3 James. 00:00:04.67\00:00:06.00 As we have been looking at this 00:00:06.03\00:00:07.37 Chapter we've seen that Nebuchadnezzar has defied the 00:00:07.40\00:00:10.87 dream that God gave him in Chapter 2 and now he is seeking 00:00:10.94\00:00:14.71 to implement, through force and coercion, 00:00:14.74\00:00:17.15 his own system of worship. 00:00:17.18\00:00:19.41 All the people are governed by fear and yielding even, 00:00:19.45\00:00:24.32 obviously many of the captives from Israel. 00:00:24.35\00:00:28.39 Obviously bowing as well and then we have this remnant 00:00:28.42\00:00:31.56 left standing, Meshach, Shadrach and Abednego. 00:00:31.59\00:00:34.93 They will not bow and now we have this incredible scene. 00:00:34.96\00:00:40.40 These three young men are defying the monarch of Babylon. 00:00:40.44\00:00:45.84 The story picks up there. 00:00:45.87\00:00:47.28 Of course they've been reported. 00:00:47.31\00:00:48.91 There is no way that you can 00:00:48.94\00:00:50.68 stand among the multitudes, 00:00:50.75\00:00:52.41 probably thousands maybe even more. 00:00:52.45\00:00:54.45 Tens of thousands of the leaders and officials of this 00:00:54.48\00:00:58.09 world wide empire, and not be noticed. 00:00:58.12\00:01:00.56 I don't know, they may have been standing individually, 00:01:00.59\00:01:03.02 they may have come from different provinces and may not 00:01:03.06\00:01:05.43 have gotten together in the crowd. 00:01:05.46\00:01:07.00 One may have been over here, and one may have been over 00:01:07.03\00:01:08.80 here, and what may have been over here, which makes 00:01:08.83\00:01:10.60 it more interesting. 00:01:10.63\00:01:11.97 We don't always, in our witness for God, we don't always 00:01:12.00\00:01:15.30 necessarily stand together. 00:01:15.34\00:01:17.34 We may not have another person by our side, but eventually 00:01:17.37\00:01:20.78 they are all brought together, if that is the case. 00:01:20.81\00:01:22.31 They are all brought together and they end up before the 00:01:22.34\00:01:24.75 King, now the King is really not happy. 00:01:24.78\00:01:28.35 It says in verse 13 that Nebuchadnezzar "in his rage" 00:01:28.38\00:01:31.69 "and fury commands to bring Shadrach, Meshach," 00:01:31.72\00:01:34.39 "and Abednego" and a bring these men in before the king. 00:01:34.42\00:01:37.33 And I believe there's two reasons why the King isn't 00:01:37.36\00:01:39.06 happy, one is because he's been defied. 00:01:39.09\00:01:40.56 He's the king, he's the monarch you don't defy me. 00:01:40.60\00:01:43.47 I think number two is because, Nebuchadnezzar made the 00:01:43.50\00:01:46.37 image all gold because he was afraid. 00:01:46.40\00:01:47.97 He was afraid of the future. 00:01:48.00\00:01:49.47 The image of gold, the head, stopping right here. 00:01:49.50\00:01:53.38 Then to go to the silver, he doesn't want that. 00:01:53.41\00:01:56.98 He doesn't want that and so he makes this image of 00:01:57.01\00:02:00.62 solid Gold because he wants to somehow 00:02:00.65\00:02:02.82 make certain his future. 00:02:02.85\00:02:05.79 He's afraid and the people bow because they are afraid, 00:02:06.92\00:02:09.46 because they know if they don't bow they will die. 00:02:09.49\00:02:12.46 Yet here are three young men who aren't afraid. 00:02:12.49\00:02:15.36 They are not afraid at all, in fact they go on to explain 00:02:15.40\00:02:19.53 to the King that they won't worship the image that he set 00:02:19.57\00:02:23.67 up they explain in verse 16 through 18. 00:02:23.74\00:02:26.81 They say with a very strong confidence that our God, 00:02:26.84\00:02:31.21 whom we serve is able to deliver us, even if you throw 00:02:31.25\00:02:35.22 us in the fiery furnace He is able to preserve our lives. 00:02:35.25\00:02:39.35 Then they say in verse 18, "but even if not," even if 00:02:39.39\00:02:43.09 not, if we are cast into the fiery furnace and God 00:02:43.12\00:02:46.83 doesn't preserve us, this is about something more than 00:02:46.86\00:02:50.50 preserving our lives. 00:02:50.53\00:02:51.87 "Let it be known to you, O king that we do not serve" 00:02:51.90\00:02:55.37 "your gods, nor will we bow down and worship the gold 00:02:55.40\00:02:59.04 image which you have set up. " 00:02:59.07\00:03:00.81 Whether God preserves us are not, we are not bowing. 00:03:00.84\00:03:03.75 This goes back to Chapter 1 and verse 8 where Daniel 00:03:03.78\00:03:07.12 purposed in his heart to maintain his integrity 00:03:07.15\00:03:10.45 before the Lord. 00:03:10.49\00:03:11.82 It is of no consequence to them whether they live or die. 00:03:11.85\00:03:14.92 What is of consequence to them, is that they continue 00:03:14.99\00:03:18.16 in integrity to serve God faithfully. 00:03:18.19\00:03:21.20 It is vital that Nebuchadnezzar sees this, 00:03:21.23\00:03:23.13 this heart experience. 00:03:23.16\00:03:24.60 In fact, it isn't about them 00:03:24.63\00:03:26.67 anymore, it is about God. 00:03:26.70\00:03:28.64 Another reason why is not 00:03:28.67\00:03:30.77 only because you see them 00:03:30.81\00:03:32.84 standing and revealing something that Nebuchadnezzar 00:03:32.87\00:03:36.31 doesn't have. 00:03:36.34\00:03:37.68 He is afraid and they are not. 00:03:37.71\00:03:39.11 I think part of his outrage is that he is afraid and they 00:03:39.15\00:03:42.38 are not, they had something he does not have. 00:03:42.42\00:03:43.99 Well God has led Nebuchadnezzar to an intellectual assent 00:03:44.02\00:03:48.72 to the truth so far in Chapters 1 and 2. 00:03:48.76\00:03:51.13 He has come to recognize that this God that Daniel and 00:03:51.16\00:03:55.33 his three friends serve, is a God above all other gods. 00:03:55.36\00:03:59.57 He is the most high God. 00:03:59.60\00:04:01.00 Intellectually he is converted but now we see in Chapter 3 00:04:01.04\00:04:04.64 that God is giving Nebuchadnezzar a living witness. 00:04:04.67\00:04:09.11 A living demonstration of what it really looks like to 00:04:09.14\00:04:13.52 serve and worship the one and only true God. 00:04:13.55\00:04:15.72 These three guys, these three young man, Meshach, Shadrach 00:04:15.75\00:04:19.29 and Abednego, they are testifying to Nebuchadnezzar. 00:04:19.35\00:04:23.06 God is using them to get deeper into his heart and to 00:04:23.12\00:04:26.80 lead Nebuchadnezzar to a deeper conversion. 00:04:26.83\00:04:30.23 So he is thinking in his mind, could it be true? 00:04:30.27\00:04:32.03 Could there be people in my kingdom who are fearless? 00:04:32.07\00:04:35.57 I would love to have that experience. 00:04:35.60\00:04:37.31 I'm going to test them, let me test them now. 00:04:37.34\00:04:38.87 He says in verse 15, I'm going to give you a second chance. 00:04:38.91\00:04:42.61 Maybe you didn't hear me right. 00:04:42.64\00:04:44.18 "If you be ready at the time you hear the sound of the" 00:04:44.21\00:04:47.35 "music," goes through all the instruments. 00:04:47.38\00:04:49.18 "And you fall down and worship the image which I had made" 00:04:49.22\00:04:51.62 "well", but if you do not worship" 00:04:51.65\00:04:53.25 Make sure you understand this! 00:04:53.32\00:04:54.86 "If you do not worship, you will be cast that same hour" 00:04:54.89\00:04:59.16 "into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. " 00:04:59.19\00:05:02.06 And here is, okay? 00:05:02.10\00:05:03.47 The dumbest question in the Bible, are you ready? 00:05:03.50\00:05:06.40 "And who is that God that shall deliver you" 00:05:06.43\00:05:10.44 "out of my hands?" 00:05:10.47\00:05:11.81 Nebuchadnezzar should know better, he should know better! 00:05:11.84\00:05:13.94 At this point Nebuchadnezzar should know the God who 00:05:13.98\00:05:17.98 is able to deliver. 00:05:18.01\00:05:19.78 God has communicated with him. 00:05:19.81\00:05:21.38 God has revealed to him his dream and the interpretation 00:05:21.42\00:05:24.45 of his dream back in Chapter 2. 00:05:24.49\00:05:26.65 He has seen a faint outline of the power of this God. 00:05:26.69\00:05:31.79 He is feeling a rather inflated sense of himself here. 00:05:31.83\00:05:36.87 Plus he doesn't know God. 00:05:36.93\00:05:38.63 No he doesn't. 00:05:38.67\00:05:40.00 Intellectually he does. 00:05:40.04\00:05:41.37 He knows about God, but who is this God? 00:05:41.40\00:05:43.47 Think Ty, just think, can you think of this question being 00:05:43.51\00:05:47.78 asked not so much from the negative, as it might be from 00:05:47.81\00:05:51.25 the positive, in other words Nebuchadnezzar is saying 00:05:51.28\00:05:54.68 they have something I don't have. 00:05:54.72\00:05:56.25 I would love to be fearless like they are. 00:05:56.28\00:05:57.92 I can't believe it, it upsets me that they got it. 00:05:57.99\00:06:01.06 Who is this God? Who is this God that can deliver you? 00:06:01.09\00:06:04.46 In other words Nebuchadnezzar, people just generally 00:06:04.49\00:06:07.60 want to be introduced to a God that can take away 00:06:07.66\00:06:10.70 all of our fear. 00:06:10.73\00:06:12.07 It is as if, yes Nebuchadnezzar is arrogant, yes he wants 00:06:12.10\00:06:15.14 them to bow down and worship but, somewhere in the back 00:06:15.17\00:06:18.47 of his mind, he is doing 00:06:18.51\00:06:20.21 in an experiment here. 00:06:20.24\00:06:21.84 He has already seen Daniel's 00:06:21.88\00:06:23.88 God in action one time before. 00:06:23.95\00:06:25.88 Now he is asking the question, is your God able to 00:06:25.91\00:06:32.02 deliver you from me, from my power of the fiery furnace? 00:06:32.05\00:06:34.92 He is about to get the answer to his question. 00:06:34.96\00:06:36.86 We are all doing an experienced Ty. 00:06:36.89\00:06:38.33 We are all looking for that God. 00:06:38.36\00:06:39.73 Every one of us is looking for 00:06:39.76\00:06:41.20 that God and we are looking for 00:06:41.23\00:06:43.00 the removal of fear from our 00:06:43.03\00:06:44.53 lives in from our hearts. 00:06:44.57\00:06:46.03 This Chapter reveals who that God is. 00:06:46.07\00:06:48.77 The problem is that humanity gets in the way of 00:06:48.80\00:06:52.04 Nebuchadnezzar and of us. 00:06:52.07\00:06:53.58 Humanity gets in the way and so what happens here, 00:06:53.61\00:06:56.71 is when he sees these young men defy him again, 00:06:56.75\00:06:59.78 really revealing this fearlessness that Nebuchadnezzar 00:06:59.81\00:07:03.18 really needs so badly. 00:07:03.22\00:07:05.02 When he sees them defy him again he gets very upset. 00:07:05.05\00:07:07.69 It says in verse 19, "then Nebuchadnezzar was full of" 00:07:07.76\00:07:11.09 "fury and the form of his visage was changed against" 00:07:11.13\00:07:14.40 "Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, therefore he spake," 00:07:14.46\00:07:17.17 "and commanded that they should heat the furnace seven" 00:07:17.20\00:07:19.83 "times hotter than needs to be heated. " 00:07:19.87\00:07:23.27 Yeah and then the command is given, throw them into the 00:07:23.30\00:07:27.14 fiery furnace, the mighty men are called in verse 20. 00:07:27.18\00:07:30.98 To take these young men and hurl them into this 00:07:31.01\00:07:35.68 extremely hot fiery furnace and it is amazing what 00:07:35.72\00:07:40.36 unfolds at this point. 00:07:40.39\00:07:41.72 Not just the mighty men, in verse 20, "the most" 00:07:41.76\00:07:43.89 "mighty men. " 00:07:43.93\00:07:45.59 Now the reason why this is significant is because you 00:07:45.63\00:07:48.30 have the strongest, the biggest, baddest men in the 00:07:48.33\00:07:51.03 kingdom of Babylon. 00:07:51.07\00:07:52.40 These are the guys that have conquered nations and they 00:07:52.43\00:07:54.47 come up to that furnace and they throw Shadrach, 00:07:54.50\00:07:57.77 Meshach, and Abednego into the flames of that furnace, 00:07:57.81\00:08:00.64 and then what happens to them? 00:08:00.71\00:08:02.04 Well, it is so hot that they are consumed themselves 00:08:02.08\00:08:05.41 and died because of the heat of the flames that they 00:08:05.45\00:08:08.95 came too close to and throwing them in. 00:08:08.98\00:08:11.19 You know the greatest trials in this life are going 00:08:11.22\00:08:14.12 to destroy us, the greatest trials we face are going 00:08:14.16\00:08:17.03 to consume us. 00:08:17.06\00:08:18.39 There is too much heat, there is too much evil, 00:08:18.43\00:08:20.66 there is too much pain in this world for us to survive. 00:08:20.70\00:08:22.96 It doesn't matter how strong or mighty we are, 00:08:23.03\00:08:24.53 there is no way we can survive unless we are willing to 00:08:24.60\00:08:28.64 go into the furnace with Jesus. 00:08:28.67\00:08:30.21 And that is why we want to go all the way with Jesus. 00:08:30.24\00:08:32.37 That is a powerful lesson that we see here as these 00:08:32.44\00:08:34.58 three young men are thrown into this furnace. 00:08:34.61\00:08:37.08 What an incredible story as it unfolds. 00:08:37.15\00:08:39.18 Nebuchadnezzar watches with 00:08:39.21\00:08:42.08 astonishment as suddenly he 00:08:42.12\00:08:45.45 recognizes that these men are 00:08:45.52\00:08:48.36 walking around in the fiery 00:08:48.39\00:08:51.19 furnace, but then as he looks he notices, he does a quick 00:08:51.23\00:08:55.20 headcount here, and not only does he see three living 00:08:55.23\00:08:59.43 individuals in the flames of fire, but he sees a fourth 00:08:59.47\00:09:03.74 individual and he says in verse 25, "it looks to me 00:09:03.77\00:09:07.91 like the son of God. " 00:09:07.94\00:09:10.05 Now there you go Ty, you mentioned earlier that 00:09:10.08\00:09:12.08 Nebuchadnezzar knew who this was. 00:09:12.11\00:09:13.72 He knew who God was, yet he did, but he needed the witness. 00:09:13.75\00:09:17.95 He needed to see God lived 00:09:17.99\00:09:20.42 out in the lives of God's followers. 00:09:20.49\00:09:23.06 There are people out there 00:09:23.09\00:09:24.43 friends, there are people out 00:09:24.46\00:09:25.79 there are witnessing and sharing believers. 00:09:25.83\00:09:27.56 Maybe you are a person who is looking for God and you have 00:09:27.60\00:09:30.60 heard all these truths of the Bible. 00:09:30.63\00:09:32.43 You have gone to the seminars and have understood these 00:09:32.50\00:09:35.67 prophecies, but you have not seen the people of God. 00:09:35.70\00:09:39.11 What I mean is, the witness of the Spirit of God, 00:09:39.14\00:09:43.04 but fearlessness of God, is not seen in the lives of 00:09:43.08\00:09:46.75 Church people, believers who profess to follow God. 00:09:46.78\00:09:49.85 That is what Nebuchadnezzar he's seeing right here. 00:09:49.88\00:09:52.75 He seen three people who were bound thrown into the 00:09:52.79\00:09:55.96 furnace, and now he sees them free walking with Jesus. 00:09:55.99\00:09:59.16 What that means is this, there are people on this earth 00:09:59.19\00:10:02.43 were so serious about their relationship with God that 00:10:02.46\00:10:05.23 no matter what trial comes their way, no matter how hot 00:10:05.27\00:10:08.04 the furnace gets, or how difficult life gets, 00:10:08.07\00:10:10.67 they are free because Jesus is with them. 00:10:10.71\00:10:13.24 Then we see here that is Nebuchadnezzar realizes what's 00:10:13.31\00:10:18.78 taking place, I mean just previously he is feeling 00:10:18.81\00:10:22.28 powerful, he is feeling arrogant, and feeling like he 00:10:22.35\00:10:25.79 can just do anything he wants to do. 00:10:25.82\00:10:27.16 You are certainly going to obey me or I'm going to kill you. 00:10:27.19\00:10:30.29 All of a sudden this king goes through a humbling, and 00:10:30.33\00:10:35.66 he realizes he has no power over these men. 00:10:35.70\00:10:38.00 There is a God who has power above and beyond his. 00:10:38.07\00:10:42.80 Who has charge of the situation. 00:10:42.84\00:10:44.41 Nebuchadnezzar, it dawns on him James, 00:10:44.44\00:10:48.34 that he is witnessing, not only the incredible integrity 00:10:48.38\00:10:54.28 of these young men, but he is witnessing that their God is 00:10:54.32\00:11:00.29 a God who is with them in their trials. 00:11:00.32\00:11:03.43 With them in their suffering, this is certainly a faint 00:11:03.49\00:11:08.23 Old Testament outline, a silhouette of what we see 00:11:08.26\00:11:11.73 taking place in such a beautiful form in the 00:11:11.77\00:11:15.20 incarnation and cross of Jesus Christ. 00:11:15.24\00:11:17.97 When we are in the fire of affliction, which we all are 00:11:18.04\00:11:22.31 as human beings, it is evident in Scripture that Jesus 00:11:22.34\00:11:26.58 does not abandon us, God does not abandon us. 00:11:26.65\00:11:29.88 He is with us in our trials, in our struggles. 00:11:29.92\00:11:33.02 He is literally with us taking us a step further. 00:11:33.09\00:11:36.59 He has come near to us in the sin problem as a whole. 00:11:36.62\00:11:40.80 Has identified with the human race, has become one of us 00:11:40.83\00:11:45.43 and went to the cross to bear the totality of all the weight 00:11:45.47\00:11:50.11 of sin on our behalf. 00:11:50.14\00:11:51.81 And let's face it Ty, what a contrast to the idea 00:11:51.87\00:11:54.01 if you become a Christian and accept Christ that all your 00:11:54.04\00:11:56.28 problems are going to go away. 00:11:56.31\00:11:57.65 That is just not the reality and millions of people on 00:11:57.68\00:12:00.88 this planet know that. 00:12:00.92\00:12:02.25 Billions of people on this planet know that their life is 00:12:02.28\00:12:06.92 not changed necessarily because they turned to God 00:12:06.96\00:12:10.99 and accept Him. 00:12:11.03\00:12:12.36 They do not need a God who 00:12:12.39\00:12:13.73 says if you turned to me I 00:12:13.76\00:12:15.10 will rain down blessings 00:12:15.13\00:12:16.90 from heaven and everything 00:12:16.93\00:12:18.60 economically is going to be fine and all of your problems 00:12:18.63\00:12:21.30 are going to be fixed. 00:12:21.37\00:12:22.70 They need a God who is going to be with them through the 00:12:22.74\00:12:24.87 trials and through the difficulties. 00:12:24.91\00:12:26.34 He is going to give them the peace that brings them above 00:12:26.37\00:12:29.61 that storm and allows them to have in their hearts, and 00:12:29.64\00:12:33.08 their lives, the joy that surpasses all the difficulties 00:12:33.11\00:12:36.48 and trials that we face. 00:12:36.52\00:12:37.85 In closing Chapter 3, Nebuchadnezzar has brought 00:12:37.89\00:12:41.26 exactly to the place he was brought to in Chapter 2 where 00:12:41.29\00:12:44.76 he is just praising God, but now I think he's praising God 00:12:44.79\00:12:48.20 just a few steps forward from where he was before. 00:12:48.23\00:12:52.67 Again God is working out the radical conversion of 00:12:52.70\00:12:56.04 Nebuchadnezzar, he is reaching into his heart. 00:12:56.07\00:12:59.31 He is seeking to win him to Himself and here he again 00:12:59.34\00:13:03.71 is brought to his knees before the most high God to 00:13:03.75\00:13:08.05 praise and worship Him. 00:13:08.08\00:13:09.52 He takes one more step friends, one more step. 00:13:09.55\00:13:11.79 That is what this is all about, taking one more step to 00:13:11.82\00:13:15.16 understand who God is, how He loves you, and what He wants 00:13:15.19\00:13:18.49 to do in your life. 00:13:18.53\00:13:19.86
