Hello friends and welcome 00:00:21.45\00:00:23.05 to Books of the Book. 00:00:23.08\00:00:24.42 We are studying the book 00:00:24.45\00:00:25.79 of Daniel, and we are in Daniel 00:00:25.82\00:00:27.36 of Chapter 3. 00:00:27.39\00:00:28.72 My name is James Rafferty! 00:00:28.76\00:00:30.09 And I'm Ty Gibson thank you for joining us for this 00:00:30.13\00:00:32.46 program on the book of Daniel. 00:00:32.49\00:00:33.96 It is one of our favorite 00:00:34.00\00:00:35.30 books in the Bible, James. 00:00:35.33\00:00:36.67 We are just always excited 00:00:36.70\00:00:38.03 to open its pages. 00:00:38.07\00:00:39.40 We have learned so far that the book of Daniel 00:00:39.43\00:00:42.64 runs on two tracks. 00:00:42.67\00:00:44.27 We have a story line that is unfolding of Daniel's 00:00:44.31\00:00:48.54 experience as a captive in Babylon. 00:00:48.58\00:00:50.85 Nebuchadnezzar's experience as an unbelieving heathen 00:00:50.88\00:00:54.98 king that God is relentlessly pursuing with His grace 00:00:55.02\00:00:58.99 and love to bring Nebuchadnezzar to the worship of the 00:00:59.02\00:01:03.02 one and only true God. 00:01:03.09\00:01:04.43 Then we have the prophecies that unfold as well as the 00:01:04.46\00:01:09.33 story of Daniel and Nebuchadnezzar unfolds. 00:01:09.36\00:01:13.47 It's incredible because what we are seeing so far 00:01:13.50\00:01:15.40 is that the prophecies and relational aspects of Daniel 00:01:15.44\00:01:19.04 interlock, they mesh together and come together as one. 00:01:19.07\00:01:22.44 Many times when you study the Bible, or when you study 00:01:22.48\00:01:26.18 prophecy, you are inclined to separate it from Christian 00:01:26.21\00:01:29.92 experience, relationship, practical Christianity. 00:01:29.95\00:01:33.05 We don't see that in the book of Daniel, 00:01:33.09\00:01:34.99 and we won't see it. 00:01:35.06\00:01:36.39 As you move down all the way through these chapters 00:01:36.42\00:01:38.13 we are going to see time and time again that they link 00:01:38.16\00:01:40.26 together, or connect together. 00:01:40.30\00:01:42.13 One of the main themes we are going to find in the book 00:01:42.20\00:01:44.83 of Daniel is this relationship theme. 00:01:44.87\00:01:47.17 I think we can say with certainty James not only because 00:01:47.20\00:01:52.47 of what we read in the Bible, but just observing ourselves 00:01:52.51\00:01:57.48 and people in their religious experiences, that knowledge 00:01:57.51\00:02:02.42 without an experience with God is actually dangerous. 00:02:02.45\00:02:07.22 I mean if we know all the prophecies backwards and forward 00:02:07.26\00:02:10.63 and we can prove what each point means, and interpret the 00:02:10.66\00:02:14.50 dreams and visions that we have in the prophetic books of 00:02:14.56\00:02:18.40 the Bible, but we don't know God in a personal, 00:02:18.43\00:02:22.57 living, relationship. 00:02:22.60\00:02:25.37 If we don't know the Lord Jesus Christ as personal Savior 00:02:25.41\00:02:29.21 and Lord, but we know all about the truth, then we are 00:02:29.24\00:02:32.98 lethal in dealing with people. 00:02:33.01\00:02:35.72 That's certainly proves true in Daniel Chapter 3. 00:02:35.75\00:02:38.62 What you have here is king 00:02:38.65\00:02:40.62 who has been convicted. 00:02:40.66\00:02:42.56 He is moving from one religion 00:02:42.59\00:02:44.73 to another, in a sense. 00:02:44.76\00:02:46.59 This king, Nebuchadnezzar, has had this incredible 00:02:46.63\00:02:51.03 interpretation delivered to him of this image he dreamed 00:02:51.07\00:02:55.84 about and couldn't remember. 00:02:55.87\00:02:57.24 Understanding this dream represents these different 00:02:57.27\00:03:00.81 kingdoms in this earth, going all the way down to the 00:03:00.88\00:03:04.31 very end of time. 00:03:04.35\00:03:06.35 Down to the time in which we live and beyond to the 00:03:06.38\00:03:08.82 second coming of Jesus Christ. 00:03:08.85\00:03:10.39 In that knowledge, Nebuchadnezzar is about to 00:03:10.42\00:03:13.96 deviate just a little bit, because it is all up here and 00:03:13.99\00:03:16.93 none of it has come down here. 00:03:16.96\00:03:18.43 He has an intellectual conversion in Chapter 2, 00:03:18.46\00:03:22.40 God through Daniel's interpretation, God explicitly 00:03:22.43\00:03:26.37 told Nebuchadnezzar, your dream of this vision represents 00:03:26.40\00:03:32.31 a session of kingdoms, Babylon is the head of gold. 00:03:32.34\00:03:35.51 Only the head of gold, 00:03:35.54\00:03:36.88 only the head of gold Nebuchadnezzar. 00:03:36.91\00:03:38.81 Babylon does not continue on down through history. 00:03:38.85\00:03:42.98 Well immediately, as Chapter 3 opens, we see Nebuchadnezzar 00:03:43.02\00:03:47.89 defying the vision that God gave. 00:03:47.92\00:03:51.19 In verse 1 Nebuchadnezzar the king, made an image of gold. 00:03:51.26\00:03:55.10 Not an image as God revealed it to him, of gold, silver, 00:03:55.16\00:03:58.87 brass, iron, iron mixed with clay and finally God's kingdom 00:03:58.93\00:04:02.70 rising to consume all of the kingdoms and be the 00:04:02.74\00:04:07.01 everlasting kingdom. 00:04:07.04\00:04:08.38 No, Nebuchadnezzar wants his kingdom to be perpetual. 00:04:08.41\00:04:12.81 He wants it to continue on. 00:04:12.85\00:04:14.18 He is acting out his arrogance, and he is acting out 00:04:14.22\00:04:18.29 his insecurities, his fears. 00:04:18.32\00:04:20.36 That is a really good point Ty because I believe that God 00:04:20.39\00:04:22.69 has put eternity in all of our hearts. 00:04:22.72\00:04:24.59 That's what Ecclesiastics tells us. 00:04:24.63\00:04:26.39 God wants us to live forever, but it's insecure in the 00:04:26.43\00:04:29.90 sense that we are seeking to accomplish that goal without 00:04:29.93\00:04:33.40 God, which is impossible. 00:04:33.44\00:04:34.90 Nebuchadnezzar is seeking to accomplish that goal without 00:04:34.94\00:04:37.97 God so when he does this, he is defining what God has 00:04:38.01\00:04:40.98 revealed to him. 00:04:41.01\00:04:42.34 Now what we need to recognize is that one of the reasons 00:04:42.38\00:04:44.25 why Nebuchadnezzar does this is because he is afraid. 00:04:44.28\00:04:47.12 He is afraid for the future and he is afraid of his 00:04:47.15\00:04:49.68 kingdom coming to an end because that means he is going 00:04:49.72\00:04:52.22 to come to an end. 00:04:52.25\00:04:53.59 None of us want come to an end, we all want a future 00:04:53.62\00:04:56.29 and a hope. 00:04:56.36\00:04:57.69 God is trying to bring Nebuchadnezzar to the place, 00:04:57.73\00:04:59.93 first of all, where he realizes without Him, 00:04:59.96\00:05:02.46 that is Nebuchadnezzar without Me, without God, 00:05:02.50\00:05:04.93 you do not have a future and a hope. 00:05:04.97\00:05:07.44 Nebuchadnezzar in defying that revelation, that vision, 00:05:07.47\00:05:11.87 is defying his need for God. 00:05:11.91\00:05:14.74 In Hebrews 2:14,15, we are told that every human being 00:05:14.78\00:05:21.42 lives their whole life 00:05:21.45\00:05:23.72 time in fear of death. 00:05:23.79\00:05:26.02 It is a great unknown. 00:05:26.05\00:05:28.22 We grow old and our lives finally expire. 00:05:28.26\00:05:33.36 The Bible is telling us very clearly that human beings are 00:05:33.40\00:05:38.10 just haunted with this sense of apprehension about death. 00:05:38.13\00:05:42.84 Fear of this vast unknown, beyond the grave, people don't 00:05:42.87\00:05:47.54 want to die, Nebuchadnezzar doesn't want to die. 00:05:47.58\00:05:49.74 He doesn't want his kingdom to come to an end. 00:05:49.78\00:05:51.88 He wants it to be perpetuated. 00:05:51.95\00:05:53.58 Yes, and it is interesting because in verse 15 of 00:05:53.65\00:05:56.32 Hebrews Chapter 2, it says, 00:05:56.35\00:05:57.95 "and God has sent His Son 00:05:57.99\00:06:00.62 "to deliver them who through" 00:06:00.66\00:06:03.12 "fear of death for all of their lifetime are 00:06:03.16\00:06:05.13 subject to bondage. " 00:06:05.16\00:06:06.73 We think it is freeing, it is liberating to do what we want, 00:06:06.76\00:06:10.37 to live the way we want to live and have God out of the 00:06:10.40\00:06:13.44 picture, and God is saying no you are actually in bondage. 00:06:13.47\00:06:16.47 You are in bondage when you are leaving Me out of the 00:06:16.50\00:06:19.87 picture because to be totally taken in and controlled by 00:06:19.91\00:06:23.28 Sin and sinful mess is to be in bondage. 00:06:23.31\00:06:27.35 Nebuchadnezzar is in bondage, he is in bondage to his own 00:06:27.38\00:06:30.09 fears in Chapter 3 and God has come to deliver him 00:06:30.12\00:06:33.79 from those fears. 00:06:33.86\00:06:35.19 Nebuchadnezzar makes this image because he is afraid. 00:06:35.22\00:06:38.23 The people who are commanded to worship this image, 00:06:38.26\00:06:41.43 worship the image because they are afraid. 00:06:41.46\00:06:45.00 They are told by Nebuchadnezzar that when you hear, 00:06:45.07\00:06:48.74 when you hear the sounds of the music, you need to bow 00:06:48.77\00:06:52.44 down to worship or you will be thrown 00:06:52.47\00:06:54.31 into a fiery furnace. 00:06:54.34\00:06:56.58 So the people are afraid, Nebuchadnezzar is afraid, 00:06:56.61\00:06:59.25 we are afraid. 00:06:59.28\00:07:00.68 It doesn't matter how many hats we wear, 00:07:00.72\00:07:02.62 how many bumper stickers we put on our cars and vehicles 00:07:02.65\00:07:05.75 that say "no fear", the fact of the matter is 00:07:05.79\00:07:08.02 we are scared to death. 00:07:08.06\00:07:09.89 Especially of death, we are scared to death of death. 00:07:09.92\00:07:13.36 In Romans Chapter 8 the apostle Paul gives us this 00:07:13.40\00:07:17.27 incredible insight where he tells us that when we are 00:07:17.30\00:07:21.64 born again, when we yield our lives over to Christ, 00:07:21.67\00:07:25.51 one of the things that God achieves in the human heart, 00:07:25.54\00:07:29.34 he's He breaks that bondage of fear. 00:07:29.41\00:07:32.61 He says there in Chapter 8 of Romans, "you did not receive" 00:07:32.65\00:07:37.35 "the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the" 00:07:37.39\00:07:42.02 "Spirit of adoption whereby you cry, Abba Father. " 00:07:42.09\00:07:45.76 "The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that" 00:07:45.79\00:07:48.36 "we are the children of God. " 00:07:48.43\00:07:49.76 There is a deliverance from fear that comes to the human 00:07:49.80\00:07:53.90 Spirit, to the human heart when we give and yield our lives 00:07:53.97\00:07:58.31 over to Christ, over to God. 00:07:58.34\00:08:00.81 We are free, we are liberated from that fear. 00:08:00.84\00:08:03.28 And notice that, that freedom from fear connects us to 00:08:03.31\00:08:07.78 God as our Father. 00:08:07.82\00:08:09.15 There is a direct connection taking place there. 00:08:09.18\00:08:10.85 Nebuchadnezzar is denying the One and embracing the other. 00:08:10.89\00:08:13.69 God wants to break his hold on the one, that is fear, 00:08:13.72\00:08:17.23 so that he can be ushered into this relationship with God 00:08:17.26\00:08:20.73 as his Father. 00:08:20.76\00:08:22.10 He is going to do this in a very unique way. 00:08:22.13\00:08:23.50 God is looking for people, who are so committed to Him, 00:08:23.53\00:08:27.37 that they can reveal the freedom of fear. 00:08:27.40\00:08:31.67 The freedom from death that God has promised to give us. 00:08:31.71\00:08:34.74 He has given us as a gift through Jesus Christ. 00:08:34.78\00:08:36.98 That is what He is looking for in Daniel Chapter 3. 00:08:37.01\00:08:39.15 When Nebuchadnezzar defies the dream that God gave to him, 00:08:39.18\00:08:45.12 I think it is important to note that God doesn't turn 00:08:45.15\00:08:49.39 against Nebuchadnezzar. 00:08:49.42\00:08:51.03 He continues to pursue him because God is trying to get 00:08:51.06\00:08:55.36 into Nebuchadnezzar's heart to liberate him from fear. 00:08:55.40\00:08:59.70 He is trying to lead this king to conversion, 00:08:59.73\00:09:03.91 so God pursues him relentlessly. 00:09:03.94\00:09:07.28 The hound of Heaven, He's on Nebuchadnezzar's trail and He 00:09:07.31\00:09:11.95 is not letting up. 00:09:12.01\00:09:13.35 Amen and what I really like about this Chapter. 00:09:13.38\00:09:15.32 This picture that we have here 00:09:15.38\00:09:17.22 it warns all of us, friends, 00:09:17.25\00:09:19.79 how dangerous it can be to be 00:09:19.82\00:09:22.32 half converted. 00:09:22.36\00:09:23.69 To be intellectually converted, in what ever religious 00:09:23.73\00:09:25.69 belief we have, to be intellectually converted but 00:09:25.73\00:09:27.93 don't have a heart experience with God. 00:09:27.96\00:09:30.47 because what Nebuchadnezzar does here is 00:09:30.50\00:09:32.97 he seeks to enforce his understanding of religion, 00:09:33.00\00:09:36.67 his understanding of worship on the multitudes. 00:09:36.71\00:09:40.34 That is what happens with us. 00:09:40.38\00:09:41.74 It doesn't matter that we are not necessarily a king, 00:09:41.78\00:09:43.85 not necessarily a president, we are not necessarily in 00:09:43.88\00:09:46.92 power, even if we are a parent, or a sibling, no matter 00:09:46.95\00:09:50.12 what our station in life, if we are only half converted 00:09:50.15\00:09:53.66 we will try to take our religious views and impose them 00:09:53.69\00:09:57.16 upon others. 00:09:57.19\00:09:58.99 This is one of the principal warnings that we find, 00:09:59.03\00:10:01.63 here in Daniel Chapter 3. 00:10:01.66\00:10:03.67 The exercise of force is 00:10:03.70\00:10:05.47 contrary to the character 00:10:05.50\00:10:07.20 of God, the exercise of 00:10:07.24\00:10:09.17 coercion, to put pressure 00:10:09.20\00:10:11.04 on people to manipulate them, or pressure them into a 00:10:11.07\00:10:16.28 acceptance of whatever our views happened to be. 00:10:16.31\00:10:19.28 Even if our views are right and provable from Scripture. 00:10:19.31\00:10:22.48 We know the certainty of these things. 00:10:22.52\00:10:24.42 No matter how deeply convicted we are, we can be absolutely 00:10:24.45\00:10:29.42 certain that when we are tending toward coercing others 00:10:29.46\00:10:34.20 into subjection to our views, the Spirit of God is not 00:10:34.23\00:10:38.93 governing those impulses to control other people. 00:10:38.97\00:10:41.77 Another thing that is really significant in this Chapter 00:10:41.80\00:10:43.84 is the place of music Ty, in worship, in force. 00:10:43.87\00:10:47.71 Music is a powerful in its influence. 00:10:47.78\00:10:50.48 Have you noticed that no matter where you go in society, 00:10:50.51\00:10:53.31 at lease let's say in the Western society, I am sure in 00:10:53.35\00:10:56.12 other societies also, that music is huge. 00:10:56.15\00:10:59.42 Music is a huge influence and a huge factor. 00:10:59.45\00:11:02.72 You can find people doing, under the influence of music, 00:11:02.76\00:11:06.66 what they wouldn't do if the music stopped. 00:11:06.70\00:11:09.73 Try it out yourself some time. 00:11:09.76\00:11:11.10 You find in grocery stores, you find in department stores, 00:11:11.13\00:11:15.24 you find in the community, the workplace, where every you 00:11:15.27\00:11:19.44 find music, music, music. 00:11:19.47\00:11:20.88 We were recently building a home and we had contractors 00:11:20.91\00:11:23.81 they were coming to do sheet rock, and do the plumbing, 00:11:23.85\00:11:27.65 and I'm telling you what, you had to make sure and lay 00:11:27.72\00:11:31.09 down the law about music because if not you would have 00:11:31.12\00:11:34.52 one guy upstairs blasting maybe some rock 'n roll. 00:11:34.56\00:11:37.89 Another guy downstairs blasting some other types of music. 00:11:37.93\00:11:40.86 Another guy over here in a corner blasting, you had 3 or 4 00:11:40.90\00:11:43.77 different types of music. 00:11:43.80\00:11:45.13 What they are doing is working, in a sense they are trying 00:11:45.17\00:11:48.44 to get their minds off the fact that they are laboring. 00:11:48.50\00:11:52.27 Their minds are totally submerged in this music and 00:11:52.31\00:11:56.04 it is taking them into another world. 00:11:56.08\00:11:57.41 In Daniel Chapter 3 James, 00:11:57.45\00:11:59.45 this is the storyline that unfolds. 00:11:59.48\00:12:02.65 Nebuchadnezzar imposing force, using coercion to enforce 00:12:02.68\00:12:08.56 his religious convictions. 00:12:08.62\00:12:10.89 Nebuchadnezzar tells the multitudes of his kingdom, 00:12:10.93\00:12:14.56 when you hear the music bow down and worship. 00:12:14.60\00:12:16.36 If you do not bow down and worship you will be killed. 00:12:16.40\00:12:19.03 You will be executed, so that is the backdrop that is 00:12:19.07\00:12:21.67 happening in here. 00:12:21.70\00:12:23.04 As you have pointed out, Nebuchadnezzar is being governed 00:12:23.07\00:12:25.87 by fear, the multitudes are being governed by fear, 00:12:25.91\00:12:28.81 but there it emerges a group of people here. 00:12:28.88\00:12:31.95 A small little nucleus, just three guys. 00:12:31.98\00:12:35.02 These three guys, Meshach, Shadrach, and Abednego emerge 00:12:35.05\00:12:39.62 in this story and it becomes evident very quickly here 00:12:39.65\00:12:44.16 that they are not governed by fear. 00:12:44.19\00:12:46.36 In fact they face it squarely and they move forward with 00:12:46.43\00:12:50.40 their convictions, obviously convictions that are 00:12:50.43\00:12:53.97 diametrically opposed to what the king is imposing. 00:12:54.00\00:12:57.87 Convictions that are not to be manipulated or coerced. 00:12:57.91\00:13:01.84 We could call these guys a remnant. 00:13:01.88\00:13:03.58 The principal of remnant is found in the 00:13:03.61\00:13:06.01 book of Revelation another prophetic book. 00:13:06.05\00:13:08.35 We can call these guys a remnant because the word means 00:13:08.38\00:13:11.12 the remainder, those that remain. 00:13:11.15\00:13:12.99 These were the ones who remained standing when everyone 00:13:13.02\00:13:17.16 else bow down, they remained. 00:13:17.23\00:13:18.89 They remained standing, but more than that, they remained 00:13:18.93\00:13:22.50 faithful to God, that was the main point of their standing. 00:13:22.53\00:13:26.10 They weren't standing to be obstinate, or stubborn, 00:13:26.13\00:13:28.37 to directly oppose the king or his laws. 00:13:28.44\00:13:31.81 They were not seeking to draw attention to themselves. 00:13:31.84\00:13:34.48 To be different or for people to look to them and go woo! 00:13:34.51\00:13:37.18 They were remaining because they were wanting to remain 00:13:37.21\00:13:40.52 faithful to God and so they stood when everyone else bowed. 00:13:40.55\00:13:43.85 They didn't come under the influence of music, 00:13:43.89\00:13:45.42 the influence of amusement, the influence that the world 00:13:45.45\00:13:48.92 sought to bring upon them, but they stood and remained 00:13:48.96\00:13:52.46 faithful to God by refusing to worship another God 00:13:52.49\00:13:55.93 but the true God. 00:13:56.00\00:13:57.33 When we come back, don't go away, we are going to find out 00:13:57.37\00:14:00.30 exactly what happened with these 3 young men. 00:14:00.34\00:14:03.17
