Hello, friends and welcome to Books of the Book. 00:00:21.52\00:00:24.59 We're studying the book of Daniel, 00:00:24.62\00:00:26.12 my name is James Rafferty. 00:00:26.15\00:00:28.12 And I'm Ty Gibson, this is going to be 00:00:28.16\00:00:29.89 our first study in the book of Daniel in a series of 13. 00:00:29.92\00:00:33.96 And James what we decided to do in this first program, 00:00:34.00\00:00:37.60 is to do an overview of the entire book of Daniel. 00:00:37.63\00:00:40.87 We won't give any details, 00:00:40.90\00:00:42.74 but we're going to do an aerial view. 00:00:42.77\00:00:44.87 We're gonna fly over the terrain of the book of Daniel, 00:00:44.91\00:00:48.41 but we're not going to 00:00:48.44\00:00:49.78 specifically land and give the details. 00:00:49.81\00:00:52.28 We're going to look at Daniel from the air, 00:00:52.31\00:00:55.28 what do we have here in Daniel's 12 Chapters 00:00:55.32\00:00:58.59 and then in the future programs we're going to backup 00:00:58.62\00:01:01.66 and we're going to look in 00:01:01.69\00:01:03.02 greater detail at each Chapter. 00:01:03.06\00:01:04.86 You know, this is a significant thing to do, 00:01:04.89\00:01:07.60 is to look at the aerial view, 00:01:07.60\00:01:08.93 because Daniel is a powerful book 00:01:08.96\00:01:11.57 of prophecy and relationship. 00:01:11.60\00:01:14.30 And we're going to see those two aspects 00:01:14.34\00:01:16.20 of the book of Daniel come together and direct us 00:01:16.24\00:01:19.07 to what we understand to be the New Covenant 00:01:19.11\00:01:21.78 or a New Covenant experience. 00:01:21.81\00:01:23.95 Daniel Chapter 1 through 6 00:01:23.98\00:01:26.51 is primarily dealing with relationship, 00:01:26.55\00:01:29.85 Christian experience, the walk of a believer, 00:01:29.88\00:01:33.09 a follower of God. 00:01:33.12\00:01:34.79 Daniel Chapter 7 through 12 00:01:34.82\00:01:36.99 is primarily dealing with prophecy, visions, 00:01:37.03\00:01:40.96 predictions of the future, history of the world, 00:01:40.96\00:01:43.77 past, present, and future. 00:01:43.80\00:01:45.33 And these two come together and bring to us 00:01:45.37\00:01:47.77 a powerful picture of the Christian experience, 00:01:47.80\00:01:50.57 the Christian walk and how we can have faith in God. 00:01:50.61\00:01:53.51 I appreciate the fact, James, that you've pointed out 00:01:53.54\00:01:56.18 that Chapters 1 through 6 of Daniel 00:01:56.21\00:01:58.78 primarily deal with our relationship 00:01:58.81\00:02:00.92 with God emphasis on primarily, 00:02:00.95\00:02:02.68 because in fact there are some prophecies that unfold there. 00:02:02.72\00:02:05.92 And then when we come 00:02:05.95\00:02:07.29 to the second half of the book of Daniel, 00:02:07.32\00:02:09.36 you've pointed out that, 00:02:09.39\00:02:10.73 it primarily deals with prophecies. 00:02:10.76\00:02:12.96 But it's also a very, very beautiful thing 00:02:12.99\00:02:16.60 that Daniel's experience with God continues to deepen, 00:02:16.63\00:02:19.90 to unfold into enlarge 00:02:19.93\00:02:21.87 in the second half of the book as well. 00:02:21.90\00:02:23.91 Absolutely, so you've got a primary aspect 00:02:23.94\00:02:26.14 or focus on relationship in 1 through 6 00:02:26.17\00:02:29.21 but there is prophecy. 00:02:29.24\00:02:30.58 And then you got a primary application 00:02:30.61\00:02:32.01 or unfolding a prophecy in 7 through 12 00:02:32.05\00:02:35.22 but there is still relationship. 00:02:35.25\00:02:36.79 And each one of those comes together 00:02:36.82\00:02:38.65 and forms a beautiful picture, 00:02:38.69\00:02:40.36 a beautiful prophetic picture of who God is 00:02:40.39\00:02:43.66 and what He is calling us to as believers 00:02:43.69\00:02:45.53 Okay, James, let's take the journey then. 00:02:45.56\00:02:47.23 Let's begin with Daniel Chapter 1 00:02:47.23\00:02:49.20 reminding those who are studying with us 00:02:49.23\00:02:51.73 that we're not going to get into details, 00:02:51.77\00:02:53.44 we're just gonna move through the entire book. 00:02:53.47\00:02:55.07 In the first segment of our program, 00:02:55.10\00:02:56.84 we'll try to get through Chapters 1 through 6. 00:02:56.87\00:02:59.67 In Daniel Chapter 1 the book opens by showing us 00:02:59.71\00:03:05.08 that Daniel and his people have been taken captive 00:03:05.11\00:03:08.28 to a foreign country, that country is Babylon. 00:03:08.32\00:03:11.19 Yes, here is a man, has been devastated, 00:03:11.22\00:03:12.89 he's lost his family, he's lost his sovereignty, 00:03:12.92\00:03:16.52 he has been separated from his country, from his kinsmen. 00:03:16.56\00:03:19.19 This Chapter tells us that we can survive the worst calamity 00:03:19.23\00:03:24.77 that can come to us if we have faith in God. 00:03:24.80\00:03:27.54 Daniel Chapter 1 is directing us 00:03:27.57\00:03:30.27 as we look at Daniel 00:03:30.31\00:03:31.84 to a young man actually a teenager, 00:03:31.87\00:03:33.78 he was probably 15 or 16 years of age to a teenager 00:03:33.81\00:03:37.11 who though his life seems devastated, 00:03:37.15\00:03:39.15 he has made a unique in this court of this heathen king. 00:03:39.18\00:03:42.92 He has this trust in God, his purpose is to follow God 00:03:42.95\00:03:45.79 no matter what and through that he is able to deal with 00:03:45.82\00:03:50.19 this terrible trail and calamity 00:03:50.23\00:03:51.66 that comes into his life. 00:03:51.69\00:03:53.03 You notice in Chapter 1 that there are 00:03:53.06\00:03:54.86 two primary characters in the onset of the story 00:03:54.93\00:03:58.93 and they are, King Nebuchadnezzar, 00:03:58.97\00:04:00.80 the king of Babylon and Daniel, 00:04:00.84\00:04:03.00 this captive lad in a foreign land. 00:04:03.04\00:04:06.04 You would think that King Nebuchadnezzar would 00:04:06.07\00:04:07.78 just be peripheral to the story 00:04:07.81\00:04:09.54 and that there wouldn't be 00:04:09.58\00:04:10.91 specific attention given to him, 00:04:10.95\00:04:13.35 but it's incredible as the story unfolds 00:04:13.38\00:04:16.08 that you begin to realize as you read Daniel, 00:04:16.12\00:04:18.52 that wait a minute, not only as God concerned 00:04:18.55\00:04:21.69 with His captive people in Daniel as this, 00:04:21.72\00:04:24.59 this young man that he is going to work medially 00:04:24.63\00:04:27.30 through to unfold this prophecies. 00:04:27.36\00:04:29.56 But you begin to get the sense in this prophecy 00:04:29.60\00:04:33.00 that God is very interested in Nebuchadnezzar himself. 00:04:33.03\00:04:37.41 And so Chapter 1 as it begins to unfold, 00:04:37.44\00:04:40.84 we realize that God is laboring 00:04:40.88\00:04:43.61 for the conversion of King Nebuchadnezzar, 00:04:43.65\00:04:46.28 this despotic ruler that is, 00:04:46.31\00:04:49.65 not in a positively light at all 00:04:49.68\00:04:52.19 for most of the book of Daniel, 00:04:52.22\00:04:54.06 but eventually we see that he is brought 00:04:54.09\00:04:55.89 to the worship of the true God. 00:04:55.92\00:04:57.26 And that must be what God impresses Daniel to understand. 00:04:57.29\00:05:01.23 One of the ways that we can make it through 00:05:01.26\00:05:02.73 trails friends in this life, 00:05:02.76\00:05:04.40 is to get our focus off ourselves 00:05:04.43\00:05:06.80 and to get our focus not attention on ministry 00:05:06.84\00:05:09.27 and reaching out to somebody else. 00:05:09.30\00:05:11.01 And this is a principle we find in Daniel Chapter 1. 00:05:11.04\00:05:14.38 Well, Daniel, can be overwhelmed 00:05:14.41\00:05:15.94 and maybe even just want to forget the rest of his life 00:05:15.98\00:05:18.81 at this point in this experience. 00:05:18.85\00:05:21.05 He allows God to, to imbue him with His spirit, 00:05:21.08\00:05:24.75 with the spirit of God, the spirit of Christ. 00:05:24.79\00:05:26.72 He allows God's will to be done in his life 00:05:26.76\00:05:29.06 and he becomes a vessel, a channel through which 00:05:29.09\00:05:31.93 God's love can be communicated to this heathen king. 00:05:31.96\00:05:34.40 So, so as Daniel continues his experience in Chapter 1. 00:05:34.46\00:05:39.50 He emerges as this young man who purpose is in his heart, 00:05:39.53\00:05:43.94 he is determined to maintain faithfulness to his God 00:05:43.97\00:05:48.31 in this captivity situation 00:05:48.34\00:05:50.78 and then Chapter 2 opens up, James. 00:05:50.81\00:05:53.55 In Chapter 2, we find Nebuchadnezzar man 00:05:53.58\00:05:55.95 who is all powerful, a man who is, 00:05:55.98\00:05:57.92 is the wealthiest man in the world 00:05:57.95\00:05:59.69 having a dream that troubles him 00:05:59.72\00:06:01.56 and basically this dream troubles him so much and that, 00:06:01.59\00:06:04.73 and no one can help him understand this dream 00:06:04.76\00:06:07.13 that he is fraught with anger. 00:06:07.20\00:06:10.40 He wants to annihilate all the wise men of his Kingdom 00:06:10.43\00:06:12.83 including Daniel at this point because he is recognizing 00:06:12.87\00:06:16.37 or realizing that no matter how powerful you are. 00:06:16.40\00:06:19.17 And no matter how much you have of this world's good. 00:06:19.21\00:06:22.14 That no matter how many counselors 00:06:22.18\00:06:24.41 and wise men you have around you 00:06:24.45\00:06:26.11 that nothing of this earth can satisfy your deepest needs. 00:06:26.15\00:06:29.25 James, in Chapter 2 of Daniel, 00:06:29.28\00:06:32.15 it's evident that God is achieving two goals. 00:06:32.19\00:06:34.99 On the one hand he wants to reveal 00:06:35.02\00:06:37.59 world history in advance. 00:06:37.63\00:06:39.39 He wants to give a prophecy that can be studied 00:06:39.43\00:06:43.03 down through the ages and especially 00:06:43.06\00:06:45.07 at the end time of human history. 00:06:45.10\00:06:47.44 But at the same time God is achieving the goal of reaching 00:06:47.47\00:06:51.14 into Nebuchadnezzar's heart in laboring for his conversion. 00:06:51.17\00:06:55.74 Nebuchadnezzar is a heathen King. 00:06:55.78\00:06:58.28 Why doesn't God just give the prophecy to Daniel, 00:06:58.31\00:07:01.68 Daniel is a prophet after all. 00:07:01.72\00:07:03.12 Daniel is faithful to God, but God gives a vision, 00:07:03.15\00:07:07.46 a prophecy to someone who isn't even a believer. 00:07:07.49\00:07:11.43 Nebuchadnezzar at this point 00:07:11.46\00:07:12.83 needs to feel his need and he doesn't. 00:07:12.86\00:07:14.60 He just conquered all the world, 00:07:14.63\00:07:16.16 he has taken Daniel's God into captivity 00:07:16.20\00:07:19.00 basically the vessels of his sanctuary, 00:07:19.03\00:07:20.97 so he doesn't feel his need at all 00:07:21.00\00:07:22.34 and so this is the way that God helps Nebuchadnezzar 00:07:22.37\00:07:25.11 to feel his need through this dream 00:07:25.14\00:07:26.64 that cannot be understood 00:07:26.68\00:07:28.01 or interpreted by any of his wise men. 00:07:28.04\00:07:29.94 Nebuchadnezzar comes to the place 00:07:29.98\00:07:31.35 where he is so frustrated that he gives up 00:07:31.38\00:07:33.42 all hope at anything that is of earthly wisdom around him 00:07:33.45\00:07:37.35 and in that point God steps into the picture 00:07:37.39\00:07:40.36 and Nebuchadnezzar realizes at least intellectually 00:07:40.39\00:07:43.39 that there is something bigger, something better, 00:07:43.43\00:07:45.79 something more than anything that he is accustom to, 00:07:45.83\00:07:48.43 anything that is known to him. Yes. 00:07:48.46\00:07:50.33 In the realm and the world that he has been living 00:07:50.37\00:07:52.07 and that's exactly what God wants to be for us friends. 00:07:52.10\00:07:54.80 He wants to at times breakup our ease or prosperity 00:07:54.84\00:08:01.78 or satisfaction with the things of this world. 00:08:01.81\00:08:04.38 He allows us to experience trouble 00:08:04.41\00:08:06.65 as Nebuchadnezzar did with his dream, 00:08:06.68\00:08:08.38 so that he can awaken in us 00:08:08.42\00:08:10.52 the real need that we have for him. 00:08:10.55\00:08:12.45 So relationship begins in Chapter 2 00:08:12.49\00:08:15.16 between Nebuchadnezzar and Daniel, 00:08:15.19\00:08:16.89 because Daniel is the one who is called in 00:08:16.93\00:08:20.23 to interpret King Nebuchadnezzar's dream. 00:08:20.26\00:08:23.30 We're gonna look at the dream specifically and breakdown 00:08:23.33\00:08:26.87 what it reveals of world history in advance 00:08:26.90\00:08:29.67 as we deal with the prophecy 00:08:29.70\00:08:31.31 specifically in a future program, 00:08:31.34\00:08:33.04 but then we come to Daniel Chapter 3. 00:08:33.07\00:08:35.34 This Daniel Chapter 3 is incredible, 00:08:35.38\00:08:37.05 because here is the king who has intellectually 00:08:37.08\00:08:40.42 acknowledged the interpretation 00:08:40.45\00:08:42.58 of the dream of an image of three different, 00:08:42.62\00:08:45.25 four different types of metals and then he goes 00:08:45.29\00:08:48.02 in Chapter 3 he goes on to in a sense 00:08:48.06\00:08:51.59 turn away from the light 00:08:51.63\00:08:53.40 that has been given to him from God. Yes. 00:08:53.43\00:08:55.10 And created image that is all of gold. 00:08:55.13\00:08:57.23 Now, what this does really is 00:08:57.27\00:08:59.40 it reveals to us our deepest need and fear. 00:08:59.43\00:09:02.44 Nebuchadnezzar recognized in the first dream himself, 00:09:02.47\00:09:05.51 his kingdom, it was the kingdom of gold, 00:09:05.54\00:09:08.54 symbolized by the head of gold, 00:09:08.58\00:09:10.15 but in Chapter 3 he is in denial, 00:09:10.18\00:09:12.75 because he wants his kingdom to continue on forever. 00:09:12.78\00:09:16.62 Now the danger in these friends is that 00:09:16.65\00:09:18.52 we need to recognize and God wants to show us, 00:09:18.55\00:09:20.89 that there is no forever without God. 00:09:20.92\00:09:22.66 God is the only one that has eternal life, yes, 00:09:22.69\00:09:24.46 and God wants you and I to have that eternal life. 00:09:24.49\00:09:27.13 He doesn't want us to be without that eternal life, 00:09:27.20\00:09:29.60 but in order to have it we need to recognize him 00:09:29.63\00:09:32.07 as the creator and the redeemer. 00:09:32.10\00:09:33.80 So Nebuchadnezzar is moving through 00:09:33.84\00:09:36.30 a progressively deepening experience with God. 00:09:36.34\00:09:39.97 Nebuchadnezzar doesn't even know 00:09:40.01\00:09:41.68 that God is pursuing him at this point. 00:09:41.71\00:09:43.58 He doesn't even know that he is entering 00:09:43.61\00:09:46.18 into a relationship with the Most High God of heaven. 00:09:46.21\00:09:49.68 All he knows is that he has received this troubling dream 00:09:49.72\00:09:53.29 and he wants to know what it means. 00:09:53.32\00:09:55.06 Daniel tells him the dream, interprets the dream 00:09:55.09\00:09:58.19 and at the end of Chapter 2 00:09:58.23\00:10:00.76 Nebuchadnezzar has acknowledged Daniel's God. 00:10:00.80\00:10:03.43 He is actually voiced praise and thanks to this God 00:10:03.47\00:10:07.90 and then he proceeds in Chapter 3 00:10:07.94\00:10:09.60 with this intellectual knowledge 00:10:09.64\00:10:11.44 that God has given him to defy that knowledge, 00:10:11.47\00:10:14.61 to create an image that goes contrary 00:10:14.64\00:10:17.31 to what God actually revealed to him through his dream 00:10:17.35\00:10:20.75 and Daniel's interpretation. 00:10:20.78\00:10:22.72 But God's not done with Nebuchadnezzar yet, 00:10:22.75\00:10:25.42 He is not giving up on this guy, 00:10:25.45\00:10:27.46 He sets up this image of gold and he exercises force 00:10:27.49\00:10:32.09 in his kingdom to demand, to command that 00:10:32.13\00:10:36.00 everyone worship the image of gold that represents 00:10:36.03\00:10:38.83 the perpetuation of the Kingdom of Babylon 00:10:38.87\00:10:42.04 for all time in eternity, 00:10:42.07\00:10:43.87 no doubt in Nebuchadnezzar's mind, 00:10:43.91\00:10:45.51 he just wants Babylon to go on and on and on 00:10:45.54\00:10:48.31 and even though he's defying the vision, 00:10:48.34\00:10:52.08 God doesn't abandon him. 00:10:52.11\00:10:53.92 God continues to draw close to Nebuchadnezzar 00:10:53.95\00:10:57.59 and gives him a second dream. 00:10:57.62\00:10:59.85 Daniel Chapter 4 reveals the second dream 00:10:59.89\00:11:02.06 and it's really interesting here when you study 00:11:02.09\00:11:04.06 or understand human nature, 00:11:04.09\00:11:06.09 lots of us want to have religion, 00:11:06.13\00:11:08.13 we want to intellectually acknowledge God, 00:11:08.16\00:11:10.60 we move past maybe the stage of atheism or unbeliever, 00:11:10.63\00:11:14.60 but we want God on our terms, not on Gods terms. 00:11:14.64\00:11:17.94 Nebuchadnezzar wants God on his terms. 00:11:17.97\00:11:19.97 Okay, I believe your God is the God of God's, 00:11:20.01\00:11:22.71 but this is the way I'm gonna worship God. 00:11:22.74\00:11:24.91 This is the way God can be part of my life and God says, 00:11:24.95\00:11:27.28 no, it can't be that way. 00:11:27.32\00:11:28.65 Daniel Chapter 4 is a revelation 00:11:28.68\00:11:31.95 of the truth of the matter and that is, 00:11:31.99\00:11:34.59 that nothing in this world is more important than God. 00:11:34.62\00:11:38.93 Nebuchadnezzar is still putting things ahead of God, 00:11:38.96\00:11:40.73 he's still, he's still placing worldly things 00:11:40.76\00:11:44.63 as more important than God. 00:11:44.67\00:11:46.74 By the time this vision is finished and by the time this, 00:11:46.77\00:11:50.84 we'll talk about it more, 00:11:50.87\00:11:52.24 the seven years passes over Nebuchadnezzar, 00:11:52.27\00:11:54.91 God is first and foremost and everything else 00:11:54.94\00:11:58.31 is secondary and that is 00:11:58.35\00:11:59.68 when Nebuchadnezzar's heart is filled with joy and peace. 00:11:59.71\00:12:02.58 So Chapter 4 of Daniel is a testimony 00:12:02.62\00:12:05.82 from Nebuchadnezzar that indicates his 00:12:05.85\00:12:08.42 for incomplete conversion to the Lord, 00:12:08.46\00:12:12.13 but then Chapter 5 unfolds and we see a contrast. 00:12:12.16\00:12:15.23 Yes, in Chapter 5, Ty, we have Belshazzar, 00:12:15.26\00:12:18.27 Nebuchadnezzar's grandson and he is exactly 00:12:18.30\00:12:21.24 the opposite in response to God that Nebuchadnezzar was. 00:12:21.27\00:12:25.17 Belshazzar is overwhelmed with the things of this earth, 00:12:25.21\00:12:28.58 the gods of silver, and stone, and wood, and iron, 00:12:28.61\00:12:31.71 and he does not acknowledge God, 00:12:31.75\00:12:33.72 he does not acknowledge that in Him, 00:12:33.75\00:12:35.62 we live, and move, and have our being. 00:12:35.65\00:12:36.99 He does not respond to the gospel, 00:12:37.02\00:12:38.59 the good news, and the love of God 00:12:38.62\00:12:40.52 and finally comes to the place 00:12:40.56\00:12:41.92 where he receives the judgment of God. 00:12:41.96\00:12:43.93 Chapter 5 of Daniel is a- the story of Belshazzar's 00:12:43.96\00:12:49.40 drunken feast and it is in Chapter 5 that we have the, 00:12:49.43\00:12:55.70 the body less hand that writes the words on the wall 00:12:55.74\00:12:59.34 at Belshazzar's feast "Mene Mene Tekel Upharsin" 00:12:59.37\00:13:04.11 you are weighed in the balances and found wanting. 00:13:04.15\00:13:07.52 And Chapter 5 brings us to the conclusion 00:13:07.55\00:13:09.82 of the Babylonian empire 00:13:09.85\00:13:11.75 and the Medes and Persians take over at that point. 00:13:11.79\00:13:14.36 Yeah, then we get into Chapter 6 the final Chapter 00:13:14.39\00:13:16.76 in this first half focusing again on relationship. 00:13:16.79\00:13:19.89 This one is an astounding 00:13:19.93\00:13:23.06 summary of Daniel's faith in God. 00:13:23.10\00:13:27.24 Here's the man who praise morning, 00:13:27.27\00:13:30.24 evening and at noon and prayer and communicating with God 00:13:30.27\00:13:32.71 is the most important thing friends. 00:13:32.74\00:13:34.54 Daniels testifies of that truth and even 00:13:34.58\00:13:37.21 when laws are passed that forbid him to pray, 00:13:37.25\00:13:39.91 he continues to pray and of course 00:13:39.95\00:13:41.65 we know the story so well, he ends up in the lions den 00:13:41.68\00:13:44.35 and there God delivers him from the mouth of the lions. 00:13:44.39\00:13:47.79 Daniel Chapter 6 is a powerful testimony 00:13:47.82\00:13:51.33 of how we can have faith in God in the toughest of times 00:13:51.36\00:13:54.36 and through the greatest of trials. 00:13:54.36\00:13:55.93 Don't go away, we'll be right back 00:13:55.96\00:13:57.70 to cover the second half of the book of Daniel. 00:13:57.73\00:13:59.87
